How long is the drive from Banos to Tena?
The direct drive from Banos to Tena is 85.8 mi (138 km), and should have a drive time of 3 hrs 16 mins in normal traffic.
If you’re going on a road trip from Banos to Tena, we did the research for you and compiled some great stops along the way — with top places to visit like Tungurahua and La Casa del Arbol, or the ever-popular Volcan Altar.
The top stops along the way from Banos to Tena (with short detours) are CASCADA EL PAILÓN del DIABLO, La Casa del Arbol, and Cascada Manto de la Novia. Other popular stops include amaZOOnico, Jumandy Caves, and Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Agua Santa Church.
This majestic extinct volcano features a colorful crater lake, hiking trails, climbing & a refuge.
Recommendations: wear rubber boots whether it rains or not because the road is full of mud. If you camp, you must contact the park in advance. It is recommended to have done trekking before because otherwise it can be very difficult. It is an experience that is worth it.
Carolina Herrera — Google review
The 'yellow lake' or laguna amarilla, is one of the most stunning place in Ecuador. You can camp with your own tent if you walk untill the end of the valley, passing the cottage. Better to go when it's not raining and wear boots!
Marianna — Google review
I'm amazed by the beauty of this place, the volcano is magestic. Definitely worth all the walking in mud for hours. You can camp in here and go see the many lakes surrounding the volcano.
Amanda Enriquez — Google review
Laguna amarillo and the surrounding areas are some of the most beautiful surroundings I have ever seen. The views are absolutely stunning and for anyone able to make the 2 day trek with their own camping gear, I would totally recommend it.
However, avoid Candetur tour company at all costs. Previous to the trek itself, we were given the option to hike the entire path and back in a single day which we decided to do and they told me they 100% recommend that I do not take my trekking boots, and to use their wellies instead. On the day of the hike, their boots did not fit, thankfully I ignored their advice and brought my own anyway. After waking up at 3:30, our guide was late and we left 45 minutes late. He rode a horse almost the entire way whilst we walked, had no interesting information to tell us and spent most of the time looking at his phone whilst we struggled through the mud. It was completely irresponsible to tell us the hike on foot would take 11 hours. we usually complete our hikes in less than the estimated time, yet we were hiking for over 14 hours, whilst our guide (Alex) told us from his horse that we were too slow and continued to lie to us about how long was left. Our wonderful experience at the top was tainted by a trek back in total darkness, utterly exhausted and squelching through muddy paths with exposed barbed wire.
Go to El Altar.
Do not go with Candetur.

The most beautiful landscape in Ecuador and one of the most beautiful place from all over the world
Tungurahua is an active stratovolcano that stands at 5,023 meters above sea level and boasts a snow-covered summit. The area surrounding the volcano is rich in diverse vegetation, including representative flowers like aguacolla, eucalyptus, cypress, quishuar, molles, and a variety of orchids.
The Tungurahua was the first mountain I ever attempted to summit. We left the refuge at around 01:00 and started our nightly climb. Reached the cross which marks the 2/3 way without much hassle. However, the way to the crater turned out to be very vertical and covered with volcanic ashes which are very slippery. Further, shortage of breath due to the altitude started appearing. I struggled to get to the crater but thanks to the motivation from our guide I pushed myself there. The crater was completely filled with snow which was very other-wordly. From there, the summit was another 30 minutes up. Took us 5 hours from the refuge all the way up. The view was covered with clouds, however I invoked the Mama Tungurahua as tradition says by wearing a diablo mask. Suddenly, the clouds cleared and we managed to see everything. What a view!! The Sangay was erupting and we clearly saw the Chimborazo too as well as the Cotopaxi. Temperatures there were of -7°C with an insanely strong wind so snap pictures fast before you freeze fingers. Going down was terribly difficult as the ashes on the path made us slipping down and falling all the time. It took us 2 hours to go down to the refuge. From there on another 1h30 to the entrance of the park. All in all, the experience was definitely worth it. Still, make sure you are in an excellent physical shape otherwise you will struggle extensively or might not be able to finish. Good luck and godspeed!

To get there from Baños: take a cab to “Pondoa village” and hike 3-4 hours on the “Volacano ruta” which is well indicated to the refuge (3800 meters).
The refuge is super nice. There is gaz, dishes, mattress (a lot), drinking water, clean toilets and even a small “shop” if the owner is around.
By the way the cost for a night is 10$ per person (2$ to “visit”, not sur what that means).
To climb Tungurahua: We slept in the refuge well with only a 0 degre sleeping bags, woke up at 3 and start climbing. We were super lucky because the moon was shining and the weather super clear which is rare at this time of the year (May is winter).
We had no equipment nor guide, we just grab wood sticks on the way (which you definitely need to climb the multiple slippery parts of the volcano) but again we were super lucky on the weather for the season. Otherwise the trail to the top is pretty well indicated and despite the strong wind at the top the 3-4 hours ascension is not so hard.

Summited Tungurahua solo in early March2022
Equipment: high mountain clothes, incl. rain pants/jacket, gaiters, hiking poles, helmet (possible rock falls from other hikers), hiking shoes (optionally hiking boots), headlamp, sleeping bag, food. No need for ice axe, there's no ice at all.
How to summit solo
- Rent what you're missing in Baños (at Ñato Guiding agency for example)
- Announce your coming at the refuge, there's enough room for 25+ (+593987173573 or +593983914291)
- Take a cab to Pondoa (extra ~3km walk) for $8 or take a truck/pickup directly to the entrance of Sangay National Park for $15-$20
- Walk to the refuge, 4km, pay $15 or $12 if you are Ecuadorian, cook, eat, sleep. (There was food and drink for sale)
- Wake up between 12 and 3am.
- I personally left the refuge at 3:35am and made it to the summit in 4 hours, but I'm faster than the average hiker. I ran down in 1.5hours
- Hope for a cab/truck at the trailhead or hike another 6km from Pondoa to Baños

Amazing volcano. Several years ago we published the first photo book of it's eruption activity during a 9 years research.

The Tungurahua Volcano has a mystical surrounding.
Most of the time it is covered with clouds, but even then you can smell its sulfur and hear it roar and even feel the earth tremble.
Franklin Paredes — Google review
Wonderful active vulcano, you can see Cotopaxi, Chimborazo and others mountains from there.

A beautiful area and a vulcane with violent history who is at peace now. Great roads for hiking!

Translates to ‘The Throat of Fire’. Best time to view is at sunset or early morning so the cone is lit by sunlight and the surrounding mountains are shrouded in darkness. A true personification of fear and anxiety

Treehouse & viewing deck surrounded by scenic gardens in a volcanic valley, with zip lines & a café.
Spectacular views from the top of the mountain. The garden is filled with beautiful flowers. There are mini zip lines for kids to enjoy. There are at least 3 more swings found all over. The main attraction is the tree house with 2 swings. You can use the swing by yourself but there is someone who will assist you and will push the swing for you. There is a local liquor tasting, food concessions, and souvenir shops before entering the gate of the park. You can spend a good one hour or two marveling at the gorgeous landscape surrounding this place. It is worth the trip. Highly recommended.
Damian Kulig — Google review
Worth heading up to the swing, not really the most unique spot in the world. This is an Instagramers paradise. Definitely take the bus up and back, it is a lot more money if you take a guided trip. The swing was fun, felt the perspective change quickly and super fun. The people watching is by far the best. If you are an outdoor person, this is tame

A really lovely spot! Try the swing and explore the vibrant and unique flowers of the area. There is also a Cafe there so you can sit down and enjoy a drink or meal.

It is a must if you visit Baños de Agua Santa.
The swings are the main attractions, followed by the unforgettable views.
It also has an absolutely beautiful and well maintained garden with many hummingbirds visiting the flowers.
Mabelin Santos — Google review
The pictures do not do this place justice. You have to be there in person to see it for yourself. There's nothing like swinging high above the Andes mountains and breathing the fresh air. Everyone should go here at least once in a lifetime.
Seneca Vaught — Google review
It was a good place for enjoying the sunny day. The swings were not thrilling for us so they were a small disappointment. Entry was only 1 dollar. We came with Uber for 5 dollars and left with the local bus which was also 1 dollar.

One of the most beautiful places to visit in Ecuador. You can park around, there are some people helping you to find a good spot. They will check your car while you enjoy the facilities and you can pay them later when you're leaving. To get in, you have to walk a little bit and the entrance is only one dollar per person. La casa del árbol is a magical place where you can see the Tungurahua volcano which has been active since 1999. There are a few swings to enjoy the view and get nice pictures.
Patiko — Google review
Awesome experience! A short but steep walk to the entrance and you feel immersed in an almost surreal mountaintop oasis.
Bring a bit of cash for a drink or treat at the coffee shop. The famous swing is a certain go to. Hopefully the clouds don't obstruct the incredible views. If you're lucky you'll catch a picture of the hummingbirds.

It costs $1 to enter this beautiful garden-park with many amazing flowers and activities. There are multiple swings that were all free to use when we were there. Also a free little zip line and access to the treehouse. If it’s not too cloudy you can see the top of the nearby volcano. Super amazing place for a nice walk and some photos.

Swing at the End of the World! Thrilling and fun attraction. This is a garden / playground where you can play in a swing over the edge of a mountain. There is a treehouse and viewing deck to get a panoramic view of a volcanic valley. Can also enjoy the zip lines. Good for family fun

Almost hit this guy with my legs 😊 but he is an experienced mmmm 🤔 swing man!
I don’t think there is anything else to do here except for the swing…
Polina Antipova — Google review
Overall, compared to most places in Baños, this has an affordable entry. 1 dollar. The iconic swing is fun, and I appreciated the staff helping my group and others. If you are looking to see the city of Baños, this is not the best place to do so. The view here is more of nature. I felt like the price reflects this difference. I think this is a good stop for Baños.
La Virgen viewpoint, located near Banos, offers a rewarding hike with stunning panoramic views of the city. The ascent involves around 650 steps and takes about an hour to reach the top and return. While challenging, the views along the way make it worthwhile. At dusk, visitors can witness a beautiful sunset from this vantage point. The trail is accessible from various routes, including steep dirt paths and roads with picturesque scenery.
Get ready to stretch your legs. There are so many steps.
It has an altitude of 2061msnm and is a 1 km walk.
Once at the top, you are rewarded with a beautiful view.
It is a nice place to sit for a while and enjoy the sunset.

A drone shot of the statue of the Virgin Mary. It's about a 30-45 minute hike to the wonderful panoramic view of the city of Baños along with the statue of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus...The trail is pretty steep, but has steps 90% of the time. Well worth a visit.

The Virgins path is a place worth visiting ,not so much for religious purposes but because it is a hike with spectacular views of the city. It takes about an hour to reach the top and return. While going up, the 2nd half is the most demanding and it takes some effort. For those more adventurous, the hike can continue to the top of the mountain. The place needs un upgrade, it has been left abandoned for years

It’s a lot of stairs, but totally worth it! Beautiful view of the town below and other valleys.
Ashley Campbell — Google review
Nice hike up the hill. If you don't like stairs you can go up from 3 streets - Misioneros Dominicans via the stairs or Luis A. Martinez up a steep dirt path with great views. Finally on Calle Juan Leon Mera up a road past some farms. Behind the Virgen you can connect to other trails too.

Good views from the virgin. I mainly climbed it to test wether I was in a good condition to climb the Tungurahua. I managed without any problems, however it could be hard for certain people as the elevation is quite high.

Safety issue: on the backswing my swing got caught on the dirt and tumbled forward a bit. The harnesses were enough to keep the swing and me secure, but if your feet are extended out you could get hurt if the same thing happens.
Still fun though

Our recent visit to Animal Park Temático in Baños, Ecuador was an absolute delight for our entire family! Nestled amidst the breathtaking Andean scenery, this wildlife-themed park provided an unforgettable experience for both kids and adults alike.
Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the friendly staff, who ensured our safety and comfort throughout the visit. The park's cleanliness and well-maintained facilities were impressive, reflecting the staff's dedication and attention to detail.
Animal Park Temático boasts a diverse range of animals, each housed in spacious and naturalistic habitats. We were thrilled to witness up-close encounters with incredible creatures from around the world. From majestic big cats to playful primates and exotic birds, the park showcases an impressive variety of species. The educational signage provided fascinating insights into each animal's habitat, behavior, and conservation efforts, making the visit not just entertaining but also informative.
The highlight of our visit was the interactive activities designed specifically for children. Our kids were ecstatic as they fed and interacted with some of the friendliest animals in designated areas. They particularly enjoyed the petting zoo, where they got to cuddle adorable rabbits, guinea pigs, and even a baby goat! These hands-on experiences created cherished memories for our family.
The park's attention to safety was commendable, as barriers and protective measures ensured a secure environment for both visitors and animals. The knowledgeable guides were always available to answer questions and provide valuable information, adding to the overall enriching experience.
Additionally, Animal Park Temático offers well-maintained picnic areas and food stalls where we indulged in delicious snacks and refreshments. The reasonable pricing made it convenient for families to enjoy a day full of adventure without breaking the bank.
In conclusion, our visit to Animal Park Temático exceeded our expectations in every way. Our groups favorite part of the 10 day trip to Ecuador. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. We arrived with full mist, but they assured us the animals where really close. It was an amazing interactive experience. Definitely cannot pick one favorite animal. It was all amazing. The mini goat would follow different groups around and then go back to his pen. The cow and young horse are roaming around freely and also a sheep amongst other animals. You get food at the entrance and oh what a treat it was. The playground was lots of fun and we are all adults lol. Here we enjoyed ice cream and purchased a few souvenirs fairly priced. This is not a zoo, it's a wonderful sanctuary for animals and people to fall in love with each other.
How do you give this place anything less than 5 stars. If I had an option of 10 I would rate it a ten. Must see!
Samay Alvarez — Google review
It is a nice place; they continuously repeat that they treat their animals well, it did not show so. The animals are cramped into small spaces and seem sad; they are caged. The horses seem to be stressed when performing and even scared.

It's a huge park with some animals , they don't have sufficient animals ,some collection of birds and domestics animals are here.basically it's a one amusement park.but they charge like a zoo , entry charge is expensive.
They have Ecuadorian restaurant, gift shop and ice cream parlor inside a park.
Parking is available outside of park.
They manage show also .
You can go with family and kids.but don't think is a zoo.
The Museo Fray Enrique Mideros O. P. in Banos, Ecuador, is located in a former monastery featuring a baroque-style courtyard and central fountain. The museum offers an eclectic collection including religious artifacts, historical exhibits, contemporary art, and a peculiar assortment of taxidermy showcasing animals native to various regions of Ecuador.
The eclectic collection of the former priest Fray Enrique Mideros. Amazing indigenous artifacts, creepy awesome decaying taxidermy of many Ecuadorian species, and some Catholic relics, paintings, art, insects and bottled snakes. Definitely worth $1. It also includes a free locker if needed. Impressive! Odd! Interesting!

Oddly curated little museum, with something like 8-10 different collections without much thematically holding them together. There's a lot of clothing and religious objects, as well as art, but my favorite space by far is the room of often questionably constructed taxidermy, arranged in sometimes gruesome, sometimes haphazard dioramas.
Well worth the $1 admission.

Pilgrims and parades! The construction of the Basílica Católica Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Agua Santa (1904-1944), a genuine pilgrimage church, is thanks to the priest-mayor Tomás Halflants from Belgium. The basilica is characterized by a compact, gray facade with white spiers. Every year, the church attracts many pilgrims who come to pray to the "Virgin of the Rosary of the Holy Water," a saint who protects people and property from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Not an unnecessary luxury in a country teeming with active volcanoes, Baños itself lies at the foot of the Tungurahua volcano (which is strangely the origin of the sacred water). A good, but perhaps busy time to visit the church is the month of October when processions are held in honor of the Virgin for 24 days.

The site is located near the Nuestra Senora de Agua Santa basilica, known for its stunning architecture and local legends of miraculous events. Visitors can enjoy the thermal springs at Termas de la Virgen, situated close to the picturesque Virgin Waterfall.
One of the best mineral hot springs in Banos. Very clean. We paid $6 per person to enter. Also we did mud treatment for $10 each, that includes a 15 min massage. This facility also has a nice jacuzzi, hot herbal steam room, and sauna as well with a cold dip. Would love to visit again!

It was confusing to figure out which termas to visit in Baños, but we ended up doing the piscinas. You can buy/ rent anything you need there but they don’t provide gorros or towels or sandals. Otherwise, they have 3 termas of different temperatures, a sauna, steam room, water slides, and a (manual) wave pool. There are regular pools as well which are nice and cool after soaking in the termas. If you go at night they is music bumping and you get a beautiful view of the waterfalls and miradors.

This is the new addition to the existing Termas de la Virgin. It has a very different atmosphere, much bigger and with modern facilities, including water slides. It also has a big parking lot. Unfortunately the price is $6 for adults, compared to $2 (daytime) or 3 (evening) for the old bath.

Really nice place. Specially at night with the waterfall behind the pools. Friendly people and staff. Only issue: it is way to small for all the people they let in.

It was a great experience! We went at 7pm on Wednesday and there was no so much people. If you love photos for your Instagram, this is the perfect place.
So good for kids and play with them, also at the top we had a great view of the City.

Super cool! We did the zip lining but they have multiple attractions you can enjoy. you have three positions you can zip line in, superman, batman, and just sitting. have to admit the bat one was low key scary but exhilarating!

VIA BAÑOS PUYO SECTOR AGOYAN FRENTE A HOSTERIA AGOYAN, Vía a Baños, Ecuador
We came to the place around 11 am to noon. It was a weekend and there were not a lot of people in the park. We breezed through the gate entrance and we already started taking pictures of the cascading falls that pounded through the rocks. We went farther down and marveled at the rain forest. We hiked down and reached 2 hanging bridges. The bridges were safe to walk on and you have good views of the cascading falls. Farther down, you go down the stairs where you will be closer to the falls. You can get wet as you move closer. It is quite a walk up and down from the bottom to the top of the falls. Any spot is a good spot to take in the view and take pictures. Beautiful scenery as you hear the thunderous pounding of the cascading falls. Highly recommended for a visit in Baños.
Damian Kulig — Google review
Pailon was one of the best waterfalls I have ever visited. There are 2 entrances, I recommend the top one. The passage is safe and you don't get wet if you don't want to. There was even a raindow over the waterfall.
I K — Google review
A great waterfall. It's quite a hike to get to so if you're not a walker or are elderly, account for extra time. The journey is safe and the path well built so there's no worry about that.
There's a couple of places to eat and if you're willing you can go under some rocks to climb further to the top for a better view. That's harder and requires better shoes and waterproofs.
When going back down, there's a chance to cross a bridge to get a different view too, through a restaurant.
Sagar Haria — Google review
It is the perfect place to meet at night. The view is incredible although you have to take into account the walking times. The only problem are the guides, it is a lottery if you are going to get a good guide or one who just wants to finish the tour quickly.
Cesar J. Santacruz — Google review
Spectacular huge waterfall dropping huge quantities of water multiple stories into a punch bowl.
There are viewing platforms at various levels with accesses via staircases and bridges that can be steep and wet at times.
We had only 20 minutes as part of the tour of the cascadas, but I would recommend spending longer here to truly see it from different angles and levels. We walked along the river past the stalls and the upper level falls then descended the path, then stairs and bridges to a view point part way down, with great views along the way. While not easy, most folks in decent shape can manage this walk just fine.
Well worth the meager entry fee.
Phil McC — Google review
Amazing must see attraction in Quito! Will need a 15-20 minutes walk to the waterfall. The pathway leading to the waterfall is set in such a way that you pass by next to and below the waterfall. Be prepared to be drenched. The panoramic view at the top of waterfall is fantastic. Incredible experience
CK Cheong — Google review
Pay attention! There are two entries. On one side you see the view from above, on the other you are next to the ground, these parts are not connected and you have to pay twice. Otherwise a nice trip

Beautiful falls and light show at night. Highly recommend going at night time to get a different experience.
Chris Whitfield — Google review
A very special and beautiful place. The waterfall can be approached by two different paths. The entrance fee is the same in both places, 2 USD per person and the bus from Baños takes you almost to the entrance for half dollar. The place can be a bit crowded, but in the late afternoon will meet less visitors.
Kálmán Zsolt Kovács — Google review
Much shorter walk than the old trail. Great views and well maintained path. Took us about 1hr to complete. A must if in the area. Tons if parking
papichulo110029 — Google review
What a magnificent waterfall!!! We enjoyed seeing it, however the walk to get closer becomes quite difficult. There is a portion where you are essentially crawling on your stomach, and eventually the pathway just ends with no notice! It was quite the adventure nonetheless.

So glad to have experienced this wonderful park and animal sanctuary. Many exciting animals housed in clean well cared for large pens. Staff works hard to take care of the many lions, tigers, tapirs, monkeys, exotic birds, snakes, lizards, gators and more. Highly recommend visiting and donating to this worthy cause!

Sad to see how poorly these animals were treated before being rescued, good to see them doing better now.
Paul Gregorio — Google review
This is a zoo and animal rescue facility. The property is a nature trail walk around a meandering river. It is beautiful and mostly peaceful except for the the excited chatter of the parrots and monkeys at times.
The staff has made a good effort to give these animals a good homes, with toys and space in the habitats despite limited resources. Some of the rescue animals we a bit sad to see because they were in poor condition but it was good to know they have a home now.
Donate to the cause if you are able.

I had a great time and experience in Puyo thanks to Mr Luis who took me for a forest walk to see the waterfall and the local community life. If you enjoy being in nature feeling accepted in Amazon, learn so many things from people who were born and grew up there, please don't hesitate and contact their agency. They are more than happy to help with anything.
As well I can confirm first handedly it is a great and a very safe choice to go with them for ayahuasca ceremony, you will experience something like never before, very possibly lifechanging!

Great natural park to visit. Really beautiful. The tour is not expensive and is of very high value. Very scenic relaxing walk. Lots of knowledge from the guide. The shop at the end has very high quality crafts from the area and good natural medicine that helped me a lot after! It really did. Amazing place! I'm glad I just happened to be walking by. Highly recommended!
Great information to be learned!
I bought 2 tinctures and some honey not to long ago. You mentioned some extra instructions for the tinctures.
The dark one was 3 drops into water before drinking. Anything else?
The light colored one I believe is for hair. Should go on hair overnight and can be washed out in the morning?
Also curious as to the types of bees the honey is from.

$3 for adults. A beautiful botanical garden, though we didn't get a chance to walk much of it. Chris will literally talk to you all day if you want. He or one of his guides will tell you all about the culture/life of the peoples of the Amazon and their ways of using plants in daily life for food and medicinal cures. Definitely an incredible experience/value.

For a $3 donation, you can take the couple hour tour of the grounds and learn a lot about traditional medicinal uses of many rainforest plants. The guide / guy who manages the place speaks at least Spanish, French, and English, if not more. Due to the groups of people who showed up on the busy holiday weekend we were there, our tour was at various parts in each of these three languages. There's also a little shop at the end where you can buy skincare made from the garden's plants.

The animals are incredible to work with. I've never been in such proximity to so many cute and interesting creatures. You can learn a lot during your stay. Great tour and experience. The road in is dirt and the parking is limited but there wasn't much traffic. We spent approximately 2 hours, the tour is maybe 45 minutes and after that you can walk at your own pace and check out more. There is a small stream that you can wait in if you are brave. We had a nice relaxing time with the monkeys.
John Lippert — Google review
The animals are in small cages begging to get out and tourists take on fotos with them and feed them. Literally every monkey begged me for food. I do not get how making the animals stay in such a small cages and letting people feed them, helps them adapting to wildlife again. Also, they function only with the help of volunteers and there is an entrance fee to the park, so it all seems really shady. It does not seem at all as they were doing a job to preparing the monkeys live in the wild again, rather it seems like a zoo. Can not recommend this place, I hopes it would have been responsible and not just using those monkeys to make profit.

If you need to cool off, this is the place to come. We stopped by on a Monday and there were very few people, so we almost had the place to ourselves. The entrance cost is $3 for foreigners and $2 for Ecuadorians. At first, I wasn't sure if we were heading to the right place, but just keep driving until the road ends. Supposedly there are two entrances, the first costs 2.5 for foreigners and 1.5 for nationals and then to enter the waterfall itself another dollar more (the only price if the “owner” is at the door). It is important that if the river is swollen not to cross it because it is very difficult to return. You can also bathe in the waterfall!

Our guide at the caverns was great. The atmosphere at the pool was wonderful. They have really cleaned it up since I was here 6 years ago.

The caves are spectacular it is amazing to walk around them there are waterfalls and rivers many stalactites , stalagmites, bats, spider, fish. It is possible to call by phone to the community in charge of the cave to the cell phone number in Google maps

It's a great place to visit, hike through a cave some parts you have to swim, the complex is closed but another entrance is make by the local community for all of the covid thing.
Diego Altamirano — Google review
It was awesome! But you'll literally get to swim in a cave, and you will have to wade through water. So wear a bathing suit and if you don't have a second pair of shoes, you should rent them (they need to be closed), and bring a second t-shirt. It was a lot of fun, but be careful when they offer you the Guayaba tea afterwards. If you're a regular coffee drinker you'll probably be fine, but I couldn't sleep for a second the night after when I had some at 3 pm. It was a good tea but very strong.

Whether you want a quick 45 minute venture into the cave system or 5 hours the experience is like non other. Be warned there are big spiders and you will be wet, with a chance to jump in a 2 meter water hole! $3 to take the tour, and $2 to enter the water park!

It is a nice place to visit with children, the most beautiful thing is the loose monkey

My brother got bitten by a monkey as one of the tour guides said they were fine, after we were told they were wild monkeys. Thank god he had previously tetanus and rabies shots, but still nasty scar, still healing. They cleaned the wound and apologised but that should never happen in a good administration.

It's a beautiful place with interesting animals. They follow bio-security protocols and the animals seem to be in very good condition. The place is surrounded by nature. The visit can be around 1h30 long. There is much to see.

The pandemic has really hit the zoos hard. Less visitors mean less attention and food. This rescue shelter doesn't seem to be acheiving its purpose anymore. The habitats are small and unkempt. It needs a major injection of resources.
The Turismo Comunitario Shiripuno lodge is situated in a captivating community, known for its warm and inviting atmosphere. The spokesperson, Marina, exudes hospitality and ensures a pleasant welcome for all visitors. Accommodations are available within the community for those interested in an extended stay. Accessible via a short ferry ride from Port Misahualli, this destination also offers a store featuring unique handcrafted jewelry and souvenirs.
Beautiful community. The spokeswoman Marina was very welcoming. I believe there were lodges there for anyone who wanted to stay over in this community. It's a short ferry away from Port Misahualli. There is also a store for all kinds hand made jewelry and souvenirs. You will get to experience their traditional meal prep routine and traditional dances. Beautiful place and people

We visited for a few hours and it was wonderful. Kids got their faces painted by local girls, then we did the coffee ceremony (delicious fresh chocolate!), bought some jungle medicine in the gift shop and were off. It is true that this place is mainly for tourists, but still very much worth a visit to get a glimpse of native Indian culture.

Interesting place. Felt a bit touristy. The dance was great. We made chocolate and it was great. We felt a bit ripped off for 5 minute boat ride to the community and hope that all the money we left goes to the community.

Don't go there, they stole from us!
Sonia of Shiripuno will take too much money from you and will refuse to give it back.
The rooms are not cleaned and uninhabitated since at least half a year.
The place is generally really sad. When you stay longer than an hour you realize how fake everything there is. The people are depressed (even the Ara who can't fly) and the men drink every evening. All the show is just for the tourists.
Don't trust Sonia from Shiripuno or Geovanny Granja, who got fired from Jatun Sacha two years ago, but still commits fraud by speaking for the foundation and taking money for himself.

Good experience and the community is very friendly, several interesting facts about the amazon
Is not a zoo! Is a rescue and preservation of species from the jungle! The best way of preservation is to educate people! And here they make a really good job!

A commendable initiative! Near Ahuano is the animal rescue center AmaZoonico on the Rio Arajuno. This non-profit organization takes care of animals that have been taken from their natural environment by illegal practices and tries, where possible, to rehabilitate and return the animals. These animals are kept in 6 large enclosures that are not accessible to visitors until they return to their own natural environment. Sometimes, however, relocation is no longer an option, these animals are taken care of in the "zoo" of AmaZoonico, which is accessible to visitors. For the visitor an opportunity to support the animal shelter, and at the same time see "wild" animals of the Amazon forest. So don't expect a luxury zoo, but a non-profit animal shelter where you can learn a lot about those animals!

I spent time volunteering here after visiting with a school trip. The volunteers, owners and local workers were all very nice and made the work and time here enjoyable. I will go back if I have the opportunity again.

This place is a bit difficult to get to. My 2 friends and I ended up hiring a river boat after haggling the price down significantly from in the ballpark of $120 to $75 because it was just the 3 of us.
The trip on the river boat was cool, about an hour there, longer back because you're going against the flow.
Amazoonico itself is not a zoo, but an animal rescue/rehabilitation center mostly for animals recovered from illegal animal trade or people who had them as pets.
It's difficult to get to but worth the visit if you want to learn more about these issues.

Such a great place to see animals, and definitely an ethical zoo. Most of the animals are rehabilitated and released back into the jungle.

AmaZOOnico is one of those places that matters.
I have been a volunteer and professional Animal Caretaker for a few years now, having spend a multiple periods of three months at various animal rehab centers. For me AmaZOOnico stands out in how they respect animals, how they work with volunteers and how they take care of the local communities.
Working at AmaZOOnico was amazing, I had chances to get educated by their inhouse Biologist about the rain forest, learn how to take care of animals and create my own stamp to leave behind. a lot of place will treat volunteers as free labor, I feel that AmaZOOnico wants you to create something to be proud of and will give you the liberty to do so if you act responsible.
The Project is distant from any big city, because you will live in the Amazon forest, but that creates a peacefulness you can't easily find.
The people of AmaZOOnico treat animals as animals. They realize that they need to be treated as wild animals and not as pets. This is not a ZOO even if it's in the name (the ZOO in amaZOOnico stands for Zoologic). This project wants to reduce the amount animals in captivity and take care of a forest that needs help.
I loved being at AmaZOOnico: being a tour guide, taking care of the animals that can't be released and having fun after and during work with the other volunteers. I have made memories and friends for life.

Neat experience! We were able to see a bunch of the native animals that we did not see in the wild. They have a great system of volunteers from all over the world that vome stay to learn about and take care of the animals. These animals have all been rescued, most from being someone's pet or side show, so they are unable to be released to the wild. Any that can be cared for and released will be.

A special place hidden among the jungle for special animals needing a little extra care. The staff was knowledgeable and the grounds were gorgeous! They seem focused on ethical rehabilitation, prevention, and protection.

Amazoonico is an amazing place, their care and attention for the not only the animals they aim to rehabilitate, but also the local wildlife around the centre is second to none, this place really does amazing work to help out animals that have suffered cruelty, and to give them a second chance, and shoutout to Daniel our tour guide who was really passionate about his work, and made the tour very enjoyable! I will be back for sure, and hope to volunteer their myself 🙌🏻🙌🏻

It's really sweet what this place is doing for the less fortunate animals & it's apparent that the animals are being cared for the best possible.
There are so many volunteers from various countries, which shouldn't be underestimated, in terms of awareness, education & social.

Wonderful organization that is a great sanctuary for wild animals in the Amazon. Important to note that it is not a zoo is a rescue center who chooses the animals very well and works to rehabilitate time. Period is worth a visit on any trip.!
