Espejillos
Nature & Parks
Waterfalls
Espejillos is an awe-inspiring destination with pristine, unspoiled water and a tranquil ambiance. The local residents are incredibly welcoming, adding to the charm of this remote location. While its distance from town adds to its allure, visitors should come prepared with their own provisions as there are no food options available on-site during the week. It is important to exercise caution due to slippery rocks, but despite the potential dangers, Espejillos remains a must-visit spot for nature enthusiasts.
This is one of the most amazing places I have ever seen, natural fresh and very clean water, great & peaceful, the local people are super friendly. It’s a bit far from town but that’s what makes it special.
You must bring food before going in thou because when I went during the week there wasn’t any food inside. It is also dangerous, rocks are very slippery and you must be careful but it is a must go.

The waterfall is very nice. It was on national holiday so there were so many people but almost all locals. It was nice to see those people. You need to take a truck to get to the entrance after the bus ride. It was 15bs. If you prefer less people, i recommend that you go on the weekdays.
Jun Yokoyama — Google review
Took the micro that good to El Torno. The driver told us where to get off. We bought water and then went on a truck to los Espejillos. It was probably an hour on a bumpy dirt road. When we got there, we walked back in, about half hour, and it was gorgeous! It's not a difficult hike, yet it's not easy for the elderly.

This is the entrance of three waterfalls of Cuevas. You can park free opposite side of the road. Entrance fee was 20 Bolivians per person. There’s some houses after entrance which are very well looking and planted very different kinds and also river side road very enjoyable. There’s a changing room before the first waterfall. It’s really nice and fun. If it rains like when I visited will be more enjoyable. All the tour will be almost 4000 steps. Have fun

Fantastic place. Very few people visit this place on weekdays. We met three people. There are three waterfalls here. Everyone can access. Third with the beach. You can swim and fall under the water. You can spend the whole day here. You don't have to go far. Within an hour you can go to the third waterfall, swim and back to the exit.

Food & Drink
Certainly a destination that is a must-visit when traveling to Samaipata is Bodegas y Viñedos Landsuá. From the exceptional service and cuisine to the guided tour and exquisite selection of wines, this place offers a comprehensive experience worth 1000/100 points.
It’s locally very famous. You’ll find their leaflet and vine examples almost in every corner in Samaipata. It’s look like there working hard and I know they’ll reach that point. They have a very well decorated place specially after visiting the Fort you have to stop by. They have open buffet or you can have only your local vine. Very comfortable open garden with comfortable sitting area and also you can sit inside more than 40 people closed area. Prices moderate, that have parking area.

Finally they gave me the table on the terrace which is very nice to eat outdoors, the buffet 8/10 good food but nothing spectacular. The tour of the winery, which costs 50 Bs, is expensive for what you see and see. Very overrated. Wine tasting is almost nothing.

We went on a trip to the 'Bosque de los Helechos Gigantes' with Samaipata Tours and were very satisfied. Our guide Jaquelin was very friendly, entertaining and knowledgeable about the flora and fauna. Our level of Spanish is somewhat intermediate and therefore she spoke very slowly and clearly so that we could always follow her. It was like an additional Spanish lesson (she also speaks English - don't worry). We really appreciated it and would book with Samaipata Tours again anytime.

We easily arranged a private tour in English of the Giant Fern Forrest. The cost was 700 Boliviano (approx $140 CAD). Our guide, Nadine, was excellent. The forest and vistas were beautiful. Thank you!

Jaqueline was a super nice, attentive guide! She even arrange transfer from Santa Cruz and logging in Samaipata for us and of course our two trips we did with Samaipata Tours! Both tours (the elbow of the Andes and the gigantic fern walk) were great with breathtaking views but be prepared that it’s quite steep at some times and you definitely need good hiking boots. Thanks Jaqueline it was super nice and communication was always extremely easy!

What an incredible tour company. We could not recommend them more. Reasonable prices, amazing guides and the most beautiful tours. Thank you for everything and making our time in Samaipata so incredible. If you are thinking about which tour company to go with- look no further.
We did the Elbow of the Andes Hike and Great Fern forest. Both were incredible but our personal favourite was Codo de los Andes with a visit to the Centro Ecological waterfalls after- after a month of travelling through Bolivia this was my favourite day.
Samaipata tours do such a good job- and can opt for a private hike or if you do a group- they do their best to get other visitors to join to keep costs down and meet other travellers.
Thank you again for such great tours :)

You can see why this company is mentioned in lots of blogs and has great reviews (apart from the last one). We went for a four hour walk through the forest and had a great time. Very organised and professional with a fantastic guide, quality transport and a well picked route. Tough (both in our 50s) but challenging just makes the experience and views all the more amazing. Up and down with a little scramble here and there made for a little adventure. Took 4 hours almost exactly, guide let us set the pace and followed giving directions (even dropping back to give us some time alone). Fantastic view for lunch. Would recommend and use again if we were here longer.

On our visit to Samaipata, we were really interested in finding a guide for trips to El Codo de Los Andes and El Bosque de Los Helechos Gigantes. Google and Trip Advisor recommended Samaipata Tours, Turismo y Artesania with Jaqueline and I am so thankful we found her! Her guide agency is very easy to find, right off of a main road (Calle Bolivar), and it has a bright and welcoming atmosphere. As soon as we stepped through the door, Jaqueline was there with a beaming smile! She is incredibly professional, kind, helpful, and easy to communicate with. Her tours are fairly priced and her assisting guides are relaxed, helpful, and informative. We enjoyed our first tour so much that we returned for a second! All together we took 2 tours with her guide agency and thoroughly enjoyed both. The guide who accompanied us both trips was Tibu* and he was very mellow and adapted to the pace and experience we wanted. I highly recommend booking your tours with Jaqueline if you find yourself in Samaipata looking for an adventure!

I was a bit disappointed by the tour, codos de los Andes. We left from Samaipata around 8:40 and came back at 12:30, before lunch, which is a bit short for the price. Part is from the weather, it was very cloudy in the morning and we could not see anything and also because we were good hickers, arriving fast at the top. However, in the afternoon, it was a hot, sunny day at Samaipata without almost no cloud. So... how to handle the situation then, when the weather is not so good in the morning and hickers walk fast. Is ending the tour at noon ok ?

Went on a tour to the fern forest with another seven travellers. We went by two cars to the start of the hike and registered at some office. We started hikely fairly slowly. We made several stops to talk about plants in a very basic way (what roots are for, that photosynthesis exists, etc). When I asked a more specific question, I couldn't get a fullfilling answer. Generally the guide was kind but quite akward. The hiking took five hours for just 8 kilometers. We also lost one if our companions in the forest, so the guide had to go find him and we just had to wait for a long while. I expected more for the price of 140 bolivars.

We had a great experience with our guide Santiago. He is very knowledgeable of the area and passionate about the mountains. We were lucky and got to see many Condor during our tour and pajcha waterfall is wonderful.

Did both the Codo de los Andes and the Cloud Forest Hike with Kaleidoscope travels and we had such an amazing time on both. Our guide Santiago was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and the office staff were also very helpful and professional. Would really recommend doing both hikes as they are very different but equally stunning and rewarding.
We would also recommend visiting the Hummingbird Sanctuary in Samaipata. Located just after the turn off from the main road onto the road to El Fuerte. The most beautiful garden which is home to so many hummingbirds, truly spectacular.

Fun little place, especially if you have kids with you. Don't expect to spend much more than an hour there. You can get very close to some of animals. A bristled pig used me as a scratching post, for example.
Frank Streicher — Google review
I feel bad leaving a low scoring review for an animal refuge, but the reality is that 95% of the animals are parrots, the enclosures are very small; too small for the bjrds to be able to fly, some looked like they were going out of their minds, climbing the cages in tiny spaces, and it wasn't at all apparent why healthy looking animals were still incarcerated. And maybe this could all be explained with a response / more information, which I would very much welcome, but there was none at the refugio re: which animals you were looking at, why they needed care and any plans for rehabilitation or release. I found it very sad seeing birds with no room to fly.
Sophie Jackson — Google review
I was really surprised by this place. I usually never go to zoos but since it's a sanctuary and my 20 bolivianos would do some good I decided to go.

Not a sanctuary, it’s a petting zoo.
There were a number of things I saw that upset me here; nocturnal animals awake in the daytime, animals pacing in their cages (sign of stress), animals approaching visitors and fighting with one another for food, visitors feeding candy to the animals and hitting them/prodding them through the cages.
I understand this shelter wants to rescue animals from the black market but I do not think how they live here is taking the animals welfare into account enough. A proper shelter should not allow rescued animals to be fed snacks or touched by humans, this is irresponsible. I couldn’t believe there is even a cage you can go inside.
There seem to be lots of volunteers around when I visited, so maybe they should help supervise visits to make sure visitors treat the animals with respect.
I would not recommend visiting here, I found it upsetting.

French Centro, A4530 San Ramon de la Nueva Oran, Salta, Argentina
This protected national park, spanning 76 hectares and established in 1979, boasts breathtaking mountainous landscapes with endangered species of wildlife and diverse flora. The area can be reached via one of the region's picturesque drives. With an impressive biodiversity, visitors can observe over 120 types of mammals including the adorable capuchin monkey as well as more than 300 bird species. Clear pathways throughout the park make it unnecessary to hire a guide though helpful rangers are available for assistance.
My experience there was amazing. I went with my dad (absolutely no hiking/walking on trails experience) and they told us which path to follow for it not to be too tiring. While following the path we were able to recognize some birds and some footprints thanks to some info they had given us in the entrance. Afterwards, we continued with the car through RN83 up till the end of the park and it was amazing. As you get higher and higher you go from mountain to mountain and get into different tipes of jungles... there are no words to describe what you see nor feel there. Therefore, I’m leaving some pictures in this post. But remember that just going there by car and making the RN83 until the end of the park is absolutely worth it (be careful because it is a cornice route)

If you're in the area the park is ok for an hour walk or two. However there are not many walking tracks and of those tracks a few of the main ones are closed meaning you've not choice but to walk out and back on the same ones. Of those that are closed there are permanent looking barricades and signs which suggests they're prob not reopening anytime soon.

The characteristic sulfur smell demonstrates the mineral properties of the water. The first part of the return, approximately 1/4 of the way (nice climb) is to be done slowly. Totally recommended!!! Worth the effort!

(Translated by Google) It is quite an experience, it is required to go down with a local guide that is hired that same day or in advance at the San Francisco tourist office. It is recommended to start early because it gets very hot later. You go down in 2 hours, enjoy the hot springs for 1 hour and then go up in 3 hours. The climb is quite steep at the beginning, and it is difficult, but the guides accompany you and tell you not to die trying. It is a highly recommended excursion to do. Bring good hiking shoes and water. Sunscreen and repellent. Light weight in the backpack and patience to climb.

We made the return trip uphill in less than two hours. The only problem was finding a guide. Because no one responded to us, or they responded and said they were complete or they hung up on us. And it was low season and a weekday. The guide who attended to us and was very attentive was Elida. It is the last guide on the list. Totally recommended and responds as it should.

The walk downhill takes an hour and a half, two at most, it is not difficult. But the climb is very tiring, up to the middle it is steep and then it becomes flatter. If you are not in physical condition like in my case, approximately every two blocks you have to stop.
The hot springs are beautiful, the color is wonderful, they are quite warm, don't expect them to be hot.
Bring lots of repellent, lots of water and good footwear (two pairs of socks too).
The only BAD thing is to check yourself when you return, because we came back with ticks and we weren't the only ones.

Very grateful to each of the people we came across, locals and tourists as well. As for the tourist office, they always responded promptly. But I must say that we were very alarmed by the issue of dogs. We understand that culturally the dog has its leading role, helping in livestock customs and labor sources, but there are many per block, on the street, and none are sterilized. They look for food throughout the town and it is very sad to see it for those of us who love these beings. Very few can say that they are fed and have an owner. They should do sterilization campaigns that make it easier for people to take this service for their animals and raise awareness. Neighbors from the Valle Grande area told us that it is difficult and expensive to access the service. I hope they take up the issue soon.
