Espejillos
Nature & Parks
Waterfalls
Espejillos is an awe-inspiring destination with pristine, unspoiled water and a tranquil ambiance. The local residents are incredibly welcoming, adding to the charm of this remote location. While its distance from town adds to its allure, visitors should come prepared with their own provisions as there are no food options available on-site during the week. It is important to exercise caution due to slippery rocks, but despite the potential dangers, Espejillos remains a must-visit spot for nature enthusiasts.
This is one of the most amazing places I have ever seen, natural fresh and very clean water, great & peaceful, the local people are super friendly. It’s a bit far from town but that’s what makes it special.
You must bring food before going in thou because when I went during the week there wasn’t any food inside. It is also dangerous, rocks are very slippery and you must be careful but it is a must go.

The waterfall is very nice. It was on national holiday so there were so many people but almost all locals. It was nice to see those people. You need to take a truck to get to the entrance after the bus ride. It was 15bs. If you prefer less people, i recommend that you go on the weekdays.

Took the micro that good to El Torno. The driver told us where to get off. We bought water and then went on a truck to los Espejillos. It was probably an hour on a bumpy dirt road. When we got there, we walked back in, about half hour, and it was gorgeous! It's not a difficult hike, yet it's not easy for the elderly.

(Translated by Google) A must see if you are in the Santa Cruz area. Admission costs 20bs and on Tuesdays they do 2x1. I recommend leaving early, as it takes 1.30 hours to get there from the city by car, and the park closes at 5:00 pm sharp. The place has barbecue areas and grills for grilling. Beautiful waterfall and many smaller waterfalls to cool off and play in the water. A very beautiful and quiet place, surrounded by birds and sounds of nature. I recommend bringing sunscreen and insect repellent.

Go to "la Ramada" and from there take a bus that says "to the wheel" (5B), it is about 40 minutes, get off before reaching the wheel at a place marked on the map as "trufis espejillos", there you take another transport (15B), you have to wait for it to fill before it starts. It's another 30 minutes before reaching the entrance to the mirrors. Arrive not too late because the place closes at 4pm. That place is worth knowing

There are deep and deep pools up to 11m so it can meet all the expectations of many people, adventurers, families, children. It would definitely be ideal to accommodate the road as soon as possible so it will be a more sought-after place by people. Another issue, I think there is a need for more facilities, restaurants, accommodation, with a little increase in the level of service, definitely a more emblematic place will remain here🇧🇴👍the only shadow would be since the place is not so spacious if it becomes saturated with people will not be able to enjoy bathing well 곳임.

This is the entrance of three waterfalls of Cuevas. You can park free opposite side of the road. Entrance fee was 20 Bolivians per person. There’s some houses after entrance which are very well looking and planted very different kinds and also river side road very enjoyable. There’s a changing room before the first waterfall. It’s really nice and fun. If it rains like when I visited will be more enjoyable. All the tour will be almost 4000 steps. Have fun

Fantastic place. Very few people visit this place on weekdays. We met three people. There are three waterfalls here. Everyone can access. Third with the beach. You can swim and fall under the water. You can spend the whole day here. You don't have to go far. Within an hour you can go to the third waterfall, swim and back to the exit.

Certainly a destination that is a must-visit when traveling to Samaipata is Bodegas y Viñedos Landsuá. From the exceptional service and cuisine to the guided tour and exquisite selection of wines, this place offers a comprehensive experience worth 1000/100 points.
It’s locally very famous. You’ll find their leaflet and vine examples almost in every corner in Samaipata. It’s look like there working hard and I know they’ll reach that point. They have a very well decorated place specially after visiting the Fort you have to stop by. They have open buffet or you can have only your local vine. Very comfortable open garden with comfortable sitting area and also you can sit inside more than 40 people closed area. Prices moderate, that have parking area.

French Centro, A4530 San Ramon de la Nueva Oran, Salta, Argentina
This protected national park, spanning 76 hectares and established in 1979, boasts breathtaking mountainous landscapes with endangered species of wildlife and diverse flora. The area can be reached via one of the region's picturesque drives. With an impressive biodiversity, visitors can observe over 120 types of mammals including the adorable capuchin monkey as well as more than 300 bird species. Clear pathways throughout the park make it unnecessary to hire a guide though helpful rangers are available for assistance.
My experience there was amazing. I went with my dad (absolutely no hiking/walking on trails experience) and they told us which path to follow for it not to be too tiring. While following the path we were able to recognize some birds and some footprints thanks to some info they had given us in the entrance. Afterwards, we continued with the car through RN83 up till the end of the park and it was amazing. As you get higher and higher you go from mountain to mountain and get into different tipes of jungles... there are no words to describe what you see nor feel there. Therefore, I’m leaving some pictures in this post. But remember that just going there by car and making the RN83 until the end of the park is absolutely worth it (be careful because it is a cornice route)

If you're in the area the park is ok for an hour walk or two. However there are not many walking tracks and of those tracks a few of the main ones are closed meaning you've not choice but to walk out and back on the same ones. Of those that are closed there are permanent looking barricades and signs which suggests they're prob not reopening anytime soon.

It is recommended to start early because it gets very hot later. You go down in 2 hours, enjoy the hot springs for 1 hour and then go up in 3 hours. The climb is quite steep at the beginning, and it is difficult, but the guides accompany you and tell you not to die trying. It is a highly recommended excursion to do. Bring good hiking shoes and water. Sunscreen and repellent. Light weight in the backpack and patience to climb.

We made the return trip uphill in less than two hours. The only problem was finding a guide. Because no one responded to us, or they responded and said they were complete or they hung up on us. And it was low season and a weekday. The guide who attended to us and was very attentive was Elida. It is the last guide on the list. Totally recommended and responds as it should.

The walk downhill takes an hour and a half, two at most, it is not difficult. But the climb is very tiring, up to the middle it is steep and then it becomes flatter. If you are not in physical condition like in my case, approximately every two blocks you have to stop.
The hot springs are beautiful, the color is wonderful, they are quite warm, don't expect them to be hot.
Bring lots of repellent, lots of water and good footwear (two pairs of socks too).
The only BAD thing is to check yourself when you return, because we came back with ticks and we weren't the only ones.

Embark on an unforgettable journey through the stunning landscapes of Salta by hopping on the Tren a las Nubes, also known as the Train to the Clouds. Departing from Salta's central station, this iconic train ascends to Quebrada del Toro, reaching heights that often take it through the clouds. The breathtaking route culminates at an impressive 13,845 feet above sea level.

* This review is for the office itself, not the actual tour/trip/train experience *
The attention was superb, the gentleman helping me was very informative and answered all my questions (which were few since I've read a few descriptions about the trip already). Purchasing the ticket was quick and easy; they accept all forms of payment.
I took one star off because the buying process online was painful although informative.

Mixed feelings here. I would say that if you are not on a right budget and you won’t be doing a lot of other mountain excursions, then this is great to do! But if you’re on a budget and/or lmk be setting a lot of other mountains on your trip, I would skip this.
We did the Bus/Train/Bus route. We had to be at the station at 6am and returned at 7pm. The drive is full of gorgeous views, and you have multiple stops to stretch your legs, take photos, and buy things from local artisans which is an important way tourists can support local economies. The train ride itself is more of the same type of views, with a final opportunity to take the iconic picture on a long bridge.
It’s a bit expensive for what you get, in my opinion, but I do like that the money goes to the state train company, so you’re supporting public transportation for locals worth your tourist dollars.
riley — Google review
Pros: train ride beautiful, friendly and helpful staff on the bus/train
Cons: expensive for what you get: $135, compared with <$25 for other (better) day trips out of Salta. Poor value: 3-hour train, with stop at cool train bridge, plus 10 hours on the bus and at other stops. If you're going to spend most of the day on a bus, Salta offers much better bus tour options. Poor communications: many people on my bus thought they'd signed up for an all-day train trip and were disappointed when they heard the itinerary. There were signs at the station with instructions for the day before, none of which were given out in advance. There were also some technical glitches in the registration.
Overall the day was fine, but unless you're a train buff, I'd recommend the Cafayate or Salinas Grandes bus tours instead.
Nathan Walker — Google review
If you’re a train buff avoid this as you’ll be disappointed. It’s a five hour bus ride to get to the train and you ride just 42 kms on the train at a snail pace. The bus ride is enjoyable for the great scenery - as long as you don’t have mountain fatigue by now. Overall I think you’re better spending time in the great city of Salta.
Tim Lyons — Google review
The Trenes hasta las nubes trip has a lot to recommend but on the whole I would advise doing a shorter and smaller tour. The check in process in the Salta City center is moderately chaotic as 100s of people are jammed into a space trying to figure out which lines to get in first. However, the check-in staff is friendly. The buses used are extremely comfortable, there is a bathroom aboard, and the guide is helpful and entertaining (although the forced congratulatory applause before the trip even begins was slightly irritating). The tour company provides snacks and water aboard, which was very nice, and you will stop at many places where you can buy fairly cheap and interesting artisenal products and there are several stops for iconic photos. Also, they provide breakfast (a bag of tasty pastries) at a reasonable hour (9:30 am) so you are not starving by lunchtime. However, the train itself is extremely slow and the view is really not that impressive despite the fact that the tour itself is quite expensive. The towns of San Antonio de Las Cobres and Tastil (stops on the way back) are quite boring and easily skippable (although the Tangol company thankfully does not force you to stay in either one for very long).

Was a very nice trip years ago. In the old days we went to Chile by train. Now it's a very short sample of a train ride. Sorry. Not like terrific Switzerland railroads on Alpes valleys and hills.
Paulo Hadlich — Google review
This is a joke, really.
It's boring, it's overrated, it's expensive.
Nothing special - only a train ride. The road from Salta to San Antonio de los Cobres is stunning and offers more wows than the train ride ever could.
Plus, you are hassled into buying local handmade items - most of them are beautiful, but the aggressiveness of the sellers was too much for me.
Only highlights? If you watch closely, you can see cuis and chinchillas.

San Bernardo's Hill, also known as Cerro San Bernardo, is a popular spot in Salta for outdoor activities and relaxation. It offers stunning panoramic views of the city from its summit, which can be reached by climbing over 1,000 steps or taking a cable car from Parque San Martin. At the top, visitors can enjoy a restaurant with gourmet dining options and explore beautiful gardens.
I hiked to the top of the hill. The trail up is really well-maintained and is stairs most of the way. Wonderful view from the top. I hiked up in the early morning hours and the trail is lit most of the way and I felt very safe.
Philip Fox — Google review
I walked up and down twice. The stairs are uneven and can get slippery in the rain, they are also very dark at night (bring a flashlight). But there were lots of people, even at night. at the top there is a restaurant open for lunch and it's pretty good. Great views of the city.

You will have to purchase tickets. It costs around 2200 pesos per person in the month of May 2023. It can increase depending upon inflation.
Please keep your tickets with you till you return back from hills. You will need it while returning as well.
You will have to wait in a long queue to purchase tickets and onboard the cable car.
Wait time will be higher during return if you want to return at the closing hour at night around 7:30 PM. We had to wait in a queue for 1 hour while returning.

At first I had a doubt wether it's worth it or not but I definitely recommend coming here if you have extra 1-2 hours. The upper area has amazing view on Salta and it's a very cozy and green area where you will find not so many choices to sit but there are some benches. Some people have no respect and sit at the places where people want to take pictures so that can be annoying. There is also some cafe but I didn't go there. The round trip costs 2200 pesos per person.

Not very interesting, you have to climb a lot of stairs during around 1 hour, or take the telepheric. At the top, you don't have a 360 view panorama , but you can only see the city. No park to chill, and a fake waterfall. But there are sports installations and public toilets, and a restaurant.
Auré Gumy — Google review
Good hike! There are stairs beginning next to the Anthropological Museum. You can choose the same way to go back down ir take the road to descend, with better views of the city. Bear in mind you'll end up in a different neighbourhood, though (around 500m behind the bus station)

This trip was disappointing there did not advise prior that the water features were not in operation which was my primary reason to go up there again. There is a restaurant up top which we didn't go to but the bar/cafe was nice with a great view for a sunset
The imposing pink cathedral of Salta is one of the most important churches in south america. The building was completed in 1882 after an earlier church was destroyed in an earthquake. It features a rectangular floor, three naves and a high dome ceiling. There are free guided tours available in Spanish but note that these only cover part of the cathedral. The heart of the city has witnessed religious festivals and the atmosphere here is spectacular with a beautiful church full of life.
So colorful and beautiful inside. They are 3 churches like this near the square. All are beautiful. Free to go inside and maybe you can say a prayer if you want.
J Cas — Google review
Both a great tourist attraction and a fully functioning Catholic church (mass is celebrated daily), this is the main cathedral in the city of Salta. Not old, for European standards, it was built in the mid 1800s, it still boasts a richly decorated interior full of altars and religious art (paintings, statues and a wonderfully fresco painted ceiling). The cloister next door is small and not breathtaking, but still worth to see when visiting the cathedral.

Plaza 9 de Julio, located in Salta, Argentina, is a public space that commemorates the country's independence day. It is characterized by its lush green trees and colorful flowers that adorn the surroundings. The plaza holds historical significance as it is surrounded by numerous notable buildings, including the Catedral de Salta where General Juan Antonio Alvarez's remains are kept. Museum of High Altitude Archaeology is a renowned museum in Salta province, Argentina that specializes in Inca culture and archaeology. The museum features exhibitions on the history of high altitude archaeology as well as displays of mummified bodies and artifacts from the region.
It is a great museum. What a pity that not everything is translate to english. You can buy an english guide in the shop, I missed this because when I asked at the ticket office they ensured me that everything is traslaze in english and the guide cost more than the entrance. Still it is really worth it.

Very unique experience to say the least. Not sure if I’d take small children there though, as they could be shocked.
Mauro Varena — Google review
Was a fair amount in English but some still to be translated. Fascinating how well preserved the young girl was.
Photos aren’t allowed inside. The museum is very small but you can spend at least an hour there if you don’t rush it.
Greg M. — Google review
It's not too big but very interesting if Inca culture attracts you. Relatively cheap (I paid $1200 as a foreigner; argentinians, people from salta, and people with disabilities get increasingly high discounts, disabled people paying nothing). They only expose one child's mummy at a time, you can know in the entrance which is it.
The only CON I must say is that not only is it too dark at times, but also, you're not allowed to take pictures AT ALL. They say it's for preservation (what harm can a camera without flash cause? Not more than a human breathing carbon dioxide inside a room, hm?), I think it's to keep the inside a "secret" so they keep attracting tourists.
Overall it was interesting, and I'm not that much into archeology and anthropology — for those people it will be even more enjoyable for sure.
Lucas Florentino — Google review
I quite liked the museum.
As some people here state correctly it’s a rather small exhibition, but honestly its still a good one.
They have lots of descriptive texts and QR-Codes that you can scan and a very informative film at the beginning of the tour.
The price might be a little high, but they also go above and beyond to preserve and do research on the three mummies, which also has to be financed somehow. They also only display the artifacts found with the mummies, so there aren’t too many things on display. All the information, the texts and little films play together nicely though and in combination with other museums this will give you a deeper understanding of the Incan empire and its culture.
Nick — Google review
Spent about 10 minutes inside. As a tourist, I had to buy a ticket online and register on another site without English options. The ticket itself is like 3$ cad so very affordable, but... Even if you register online and have your ticket, you still get in the same line as everyone else buying a ticket that day... Makes no sense!
Andrew Gudgeon — Google review
Of you want to check the Inca's history is a must. The price is cheap and you can see mommies in a perfect conservation.
ana gaeta — Google review
Beautiful little museum built around the discovery of 3 mummified children in a volcano near Salta. Only one child is displayed at a time, but there are many displays of the items found with the children. There are several short, informative videos with English subtitles that provide the history of the find, the preservation of the children, and basic information about the original people.
Laura Almiron — Google review
Great to visit and learn about the culture and history of settlers high in the Andes, don't need to spend too long inside but some amazing exhibitions. Some English placards to explain!
Alastair Ma — Google review
There is, for want of a better turn of phrase, a roster for the children sacrificed on the mountain top. The child whose body was struck by lightning was available to see when we were there. It is important to remember that, whatever our current beliefs, some no less mistaken or bizarre, this child, perfect in her own way, went to die for the safety of her people. Go, see her or her companions, but please, remember to respect her courage and her ultimate sacrifice for her peoples. Salta is worth visiting if only to see, and pay your respects to, these extraordinary young people.
In passing the cultural insights offered by this museum are certainly worth seeing independent of the children. Would I travel to Salta for the reason of the rest of the museum alone? No. If in Salta would I consider it an error not to go? Yes. The children, frozen in body and time, make the journey across Argentina absolutely worth while. Just, when you go, pause to consider the enormity of her sacrifice and use that as a window to consider your own life perhaps.
John Pardey — Google review
Interesting museum about traditions long forgotten. Mostly about a path of children that were to be sacrificed. One of three mummies is always on display. The best are the two girls, the boy is a bit less interesting to see.
Petr Vasicek — Google review
Ok museum with interesting tho limited information on Incas. The highlight of the exhibition (the 3 mummies) is actually a little below expectations since it hyped the three children but actually show just one.

I am so lucky i got to see the maiden on display when i was there. I heard about her when she was first discovered and always wanted to see her. The best preserved mummy in the world. Fantastic. They have 3 mummies and only one is on display at a time. All are great. I only wish i could take photos but I understand it is for the preservation and i respect that. Definable worth a visit.
Yasser Buali — Google review
THE thing to do in Salta. The museum gives a great overview in both Spanish and English of the Inca traditions related to human sacrifice. There are many displayed objects, and at the end you see one of the three children. Super interesting to see.
Don't miss on the second floor the "queen" another mummy who was not cared for when she was looted in 1920.
It takes less than one hour.
Ashley Deters — Google review

Disappointing museum. Perhaps due to being over-hyped. I was charged US$8.50. For museums in Argentina, that is a lot.
There were just two mummies on display. One badly preserved and the other in exceptional condition. Otherwise, on display was a very very limited number of artifacts. What the museum mostly seems to consist of, are volumes worth of descriptions written on the walls.
If the museum included an audio guide, it would be with $4 given the tiny (very tiny) collection.
If you’ve never been to any of the Andean archeological museums in Quito, Bogota, Cuzco, Chan Chan, Lima, Arequipa or Santiago, you will enjoy this one.
But it was touted as being the better of the top two. And is the bottom of my list of all the ones that I’ve listed.
No photos allowed (even without flash) of the museums limited collection is a bummer.
David — Google review
Once you get past the creepy aspect of the human sacrifice, this is a must see museum in Salta. Extremely rare exhibit of the mummy’s of children extremely well preserved. And a detailed intimate glimpse into the Inca civilization culture.

Highly recommended. You'll get to see one of the mummies, if you so choose (there's an option to walk around that specific part, avoiding the sight)
The self-guided visit offers an English version of the storyline. Bear in mind it's really cold in summer inside this museum, you should grab a ligth jacket to wear. Foreign visitors paid around 7 US dollars entry fee. No pictures are allowed.
La Protti — Google review
It might seem expensive by Argentinian standards (8000pp for foreigners) but it's well worth it!
The artifacts are incredibly well preserved and the colours are still bright! The mummies are incredible and look as though they could wake up at any moment.

Basílica de San Francisco is a large, imposing colonial-style Catholic church and National Historical Monument. The striking red, white and gold color scheme is memorable, as is the 173-foot (53m) bell tower. Saint Francis is often associated with Salta, so it's no surprise this church stands out.

The most notable thing about the Minor Basilica and Convent of San Francisco is actually its bell tower, which at a height of 54 meters is the tallest of all South America. The whole exterior of this church looks stunning, especially when its rich red color contrasts against the blue skies of Salta. Unfortunately the exterior is not as well kept as it would deserve and you can see paint and stucco falling off from the walls here and there, also at the base of the bell tower. The price to visit the museum, at under 2 USD, is very reasonable and absolutely worth it, especially if you are fit enough to climb the stairs inside the bell tower. Alternatively, it is also very beautiful at night, when it is really nicely illuminated.

The visit worth every penny... The tour, the explanations, the passion explaining every single detail and the empathy, the smile….. Jazmín was the best guide!!! You will explore the whole Basilica, from the architecture, their story; to the Franciscan order and their influence, work and help with the aborigines. You will learn about architecture, history, Franciscan philosophy, aborigines, and more. And also you can buy gifts made from the order.

Quite interesting items to see here. There is no information in English, which makes it a bit challenging. It is free.

A nice museum with very interesting items (art, archiological, religous etc.) from different eras in the history of Salta Province. The building and the inner patio are beautiful. No explanations in english, though. (taking pics inside the museum is not allowed)

Great historical place, full of interesting details and valuable objects from the independence war. Some explanations should be expanded.
The Teleférico San Bernardo offers a scenic view of the city from the top of its 1 kilometer ascent. Taking the gondola up is an easy option, or you can also walk the steps down to enjoy stunning views of Buenos Aires.
Splendid view of the city. Just buy the way up as you can easily walk down through the forrest path on your way down.

I think the attendant should get more involved in moving the crowd into the cars. There was a fairly long line and some folks were going up only two at a time, when the cars could carry at least four individuals. It made things unnecessarily slow.

Very nice ride up the gondola, $6.25 USD per person at current market rate. Beautiful palm trees and walks, garden and view at the top. Also the option to walk up or down but it is pretty long. Water feature wasn't working which is too bad. There is a generic touristy restaurant and a highly rated resuarant but it's closed Monday and tuesday

When visiting Salta this one should be on your list , One gets a good panoramic view of the city and the surrounding area, The travel up and down the hill is quite fun, A small coffee shop to enjoy a drink and take in the view before the short return trip ,
The cost is 2200 pesos per person

If you have time and it's a nice sunny day it's worth going up. It's not a must do in the city, but it is nice.

Teleférico San Bernardo is the station for the aerial tramway to the top of the hill.
You can get the talk just walk-in, price is S.500 for a return trip, and usually there is queue for the ticket, but usually only took less than 10 mins.
As each of the car is for 4 person, staffs may put you with other people together if you only have 2. However, if the queue is short, you may request to have a private car, staffs are friendly and usually ok to do so.
After 10 mins will take you to the top of the hill, and the view is very nice in between

Walking up or down is a nice option, views are reasonable if not overly impressive (there are a lot of trees obscuring the views) - definitely worth it if you have some time free.

Great experience to travel up in a cable car. Very cheap.
