Sights & Landmarks
Monuments & Statues
Massive, 36-ft. sculpture by a Chilean artist shaped like a raised hand coming out of the desert.
A truly magnificent piece of art. I don't visit churches, museums etc but this, standing in the desert alone, is truly grand. Must see!

The Mano del Desierto is a large-scale sculpture of a hand located in the Atacama Desert in Chile, about 60 km to the south and east of the city of Antofagasta, on the Panamerican Highway. The nearest point of reference is the "Ciudad Empresarial La Negra" (La Negra Business City). It lies between the 1309 and 1310 km marker points on the highway
he giant hand sculpture can be found in the Atacama Desert in Chile, one of the driest and most deserted places in the world. Created in 1992 by Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal, the work soon came to be known as the Mano del Desierto, Desert Hand. The idea behind the huge hand reaching out to the sky was to express human frailty, pain and loneliness. It is an homage to the vulnerabilities and weaknesses of the human soul in the face of injustices and suffering around the world.
The sculpture is 11 meters tall and is located 1,100 meters above sea level. It is a massive and majestic statue which dominates the entire valley. The statue was built in iron and concrete in order to rough the extreme temperatures of the Atacama Desert, which is known for its heat in the daytime and extreme cold at night. It can easily be seen from a distance as well, and can be visited via Route 5, the Pan-American Highway which is located about 43 miles from the city of Antofagasta.
The Mano del Desierto is often victim to vandalism by tourists, due to its secluded location. It has been painted and graffitied. Thanks to the help of volunteers, the statue is cleaned every six months and restored to its original state

It's really a nice sculpture in the middle of the desert. It's really near to nothing 1 hour and a half from Antofagasta or 3 hours from Calama but it was worth the trip. Its free and literally close to the pan American road ... really nice

Do not recommend motorcyclists camp here. Overwhelming stench of urine and faeces. Unfortunately got there as sun was going down and too tired to move. After 100's of nights wild camping, this place is burned into my nostrils forever. If you must, bring a coroner's nose balm or rum.

Not worth the hype. It’s a fine place to stop and have lunch or pee but I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it. It’s just what you see in the pictures, a huge art installment in the middle of the desert. I was with some friends on my way to see the flowering desert in the south and stopped on the way by. I wouldn’t go back or advise anyone else to make a special trip to see it.

Must see for every astronomy nerd. The tour last around 2½ hours. Spent around 15 min inside one observatory, little bit too short for me buuuut it was amazing! You have to book a tour or go by yourself with car. We rent a car at the airport of Antofagasta it was ~$45 for 1 day.

Have to book tour online before hand. Tours available in English and Spanish only on Saturdays as per booking.
Unforgettable!!

Once in a lifetime experience. Great tour by enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. Our family group of four really enjoyed the whole visit. Points to note; you must book in advance even though it's free. Book Spanish or English tour. You can do this through the ESO website. As of November 2018 the public tours are only available on Saturdays. One at 10:00 and one at 14:00. We took a private hire taxi from Antofagasta. Journey time approx two hours each way. The VLT is at 2300m above sea level. Expect bright sunshine but take warm coat as well as sunglasses. No food or water supplied there, no shops etc. Take everything you might need.

The tour is awesome. But you need a car to get around the place. You can't do a tour without a car, something you have to know. The guide is very professional, he knows a lot about science and about the place as well.
Konstantin Mednikov — Google review
I was pleasantly surprised by the tour. It was well organized, informative, and free. The guide was very knowledgeable and it was available in english and Spanish. You do need a car as you drive yourself between different points of interest. The tour visits a welcome center, the control room, one of the telescopes, and the residence area. I would recommend it to someone visiting antofagasta.
Brandon Dykstra — Google review
It's an excellent place to visit, the tour was very informative, more about the construction than the research but still very good. Unfortunately, despite having time before the official tour end time, they did not allow us to read about the research in the visitors centre.

Must go if you are European and/or like science and organized enough to book a free tour in advance.
Make sure to bring water and sunblock. The guidance are very well informed and can answer any questions.
Mind that you will need to come in your own vehicle which you will drive all the way to the top.

Free tours every Saturday! Book online in advance! Or turn up early in the morning, maybe you still get a chance to enter (if somebody else doesn’t show up).
And they’ve got really fast wifi 😆

Though not as impressive as the one sharing the same name in Rio, this beach and its surroundings are definitely a must see in the area. This offer a change of view from the people-filled bahia inglesa and the region of copiapo overall. Not sure this is accessible with anything other than a tour or your own car but definetely have it on your checklist!

This isn't a standard backpacker destination and you really do need your own transport (you 'can' reach it on public transport but it will take a lot of time and hassle to sort out and you may get stranded thus relying on hitchhiking to get out again) but I would still recommend it. The wildlife and trekking options available are limited but what you do get is something very different from other destinations. Camping on the beach (organised campgrounds) is really nice and you have the extraordinary combination coast and dry arid mountains all within walking distance. If you want to see the penguins then you have to pop into the small settlement and get a boat to the island (it does not land), bear in mind the boats will either not run or cost a lot more off season.

This place can make your life better not only your travel. It's perfect if you want to rest and get closer to nature. You can find there great treks in the desert. Camping is a nice and cosy places with everything you need. There is a little restaurant where you can eat fresh fishes and the best ceviche in Chile. Owners are welcoming and open minded people. Gracias por todo Don Julio!

(Translated by Google) The square is part of the historic center of Chañaral. Its development began after the inauguration of the Catholic temple on Templo Street in 1864. The then vacant land was decorated, altruistically, by the Portuguese resident Manuel Magalhaes de la Piedad. It should be noted that the square is named after an illustrious Coppapino politician, who, paradoxically, had no act, connection or closeness with Chañaral. The square was named after the Revolution of 1891, since he fought on the side against President José Manuel Balmaceda. Over time, the square has undergone several urban transformations to reach its current appearance and is the perfect setting for boys and girls in the company of their parents to enjoy the afternoons. It is especially active at events during the summer months.

Despite being in the midst of a pandemic, the Caldera Cultural Center Station remains an enchanting destination. You can travel to the past only with the story they give on each of their tours. Never watch them hesitate when faced with a question. You can tell that they love their job and are prepared to deliver the best service. Due to my son's medical problems, we only needed to do the sugar loaf tour, how sad, but it doesn't matter, we will return and we will do it with them without a doubt. They are great people, very kind and concerned. More than a tour with strangers, they make you feel a safe and familiar environment all the time. They are great people. Thanks for everything guys, see you in a couple of years, God and savings allowing. Greetings !!!!

The stunning church, prominently visible across the entire city, is often associated with Gustave Eiffel's craftsmanship, although there is no concrete evidence to support this claim. Constructed using a combination of mud and wood, its 167-year-old red stone floor serves as a testament to its enduring history. Cabe señalar, que si bien se llega en vehículo propio, también pueden hacerlo a pie! 😀

We had the most incredible day with Cesar, Carlos and Tomas (and Robinson). From when we arrived we were made to feel extremely comfortable and welcome. We did two dives with the guys both of which were different and amazing. We dived through kelp forests, through stone trenches, saw many fish and danced with sea lions.
I can not describe more how this day exceeded our expectations and would recommend anyone considering a visit to do it. (It’s not too cold with a 7mm wetsuit either!)
The equipment Explorasub use is very good and exceptionally well maintained.

I had an absolute blast diving with ExploraSub. The dives consist of bountiful marine life, incredible topography, and one even had a really cool wreck. What made the diving even better, was the ExploraSub crew. They were knowledgeable, helpful and all around cool people. Thank you Beto, Cesar, Javi, Kiki, Les and Vince for making my trip to Caleta Chanaral de Aceituno awesome!

I have done diving in Chile and abroad, and Explorasub I believe is at a higher level. Not only the quality of the guides. The professionalism, dedication, attention to every detail, knowledge of the place and the diving spots make diving with Explorasub much more than just a dive. It is an approach to nature, the sea, with the best guide. We saw the whale in the photo on a dive in January 2022 Chile. 200% recommended

Tour through beautiful places full of wildlife, we saw foxes and guanacos, that's how you get to Punta Choros, a modest fishing village, there you take a boat that takes you to Isla Damas passing by 2 other islands where you will see penguins, otters and with luck whales. The tour of the island on foot is very well protected to interfere almost nothing with the animal and plant life.
