The Santa Catalina Monastery is a large and beautiful convent open to the public that features guided tours. It is one of the most interesting religious buildings in Peru, with its complex architecture and lively gardens. It has been destroyed several times by earthquakes, but restoration work has preserved much of the original design.
Really beautiful spot with lots of interesting history. It’s huge inside too, we spent a few hours here, really recommend if you have a day to spend in Arequipa town.

Fantastic experience of an extremely old monastery. That is still functioning but also retains its original heritage. It's 40 soles to enter and 10 soles for a guided tour. I highly recommend the guided tour as you get so much more for the place. I also recommend going at approx 5pm or just before it closes as you get the tour during sunset which adds to the experience.

Just amazing is like going on a time machine three or four hundred years ago. Early morning or at the end of the day are the best time to visit. Can’t leave Arequipa without visiting this historic landmark. Recommended!

A must do monastery in Arequipa. The colors are incredible, looks like it’s coming from a movie scene. The red and blue combination is unlike any other you’ll see in a monastery. The history of the place is quite interesting as well, one of the most interesting places in the city for sure!

A wonderful must see place in Arequipa. An ancient but elegant monument, worth visiting. One of my favorite places in Arequipa
Philip Attukadavil — Google review
This is a fascinating trip through the history of the religious side of - but also the general history of - Arequipa, Peru. Dating from the 1500s and still housing 20 devout nuns it is a beautiful and obviously revered part of the community and traditions of the area. Group tours are available in Spanish and English at the entrance and the gift shop has handmade items and foods made by the nuns.
Matt Arenson — Google review
Very pretty and expansive. Some of the rooms have creepy vibes given that is a very old convent. If you’re spending time in Arequipa, it’s worth exploring but quite expensive. The guided tours are extra.
nabska — Google review
Absolutely brilliant tour. We did a self guided tour without a guide, and found plenty of interesting facts and info on the tour. The monastery itself is beautiful and very cleanly presented. Don't miss this tour.

A must do in Arequipa!
I like to go there in the afternoon then the sun is less strong…
You can easily spend hours there.
It’s a beautiful place to discover the culture of Arequipa and to relax too. You can sit and just admire the atmosphere and scenery.
We visited with our kids and they loved it too.
Adults pay a reasonable price. It is free of charge for the kids.
You can have a visit done by a guide. They speak many languages.
Maria Angela — Google review
Beautiful spot and a must visit in Arequipa. 40s plus 10s for a guide but without a guide it's really just a spot for pictures. With a guide you learn a lot about the secluded lives nuns have been living there since 1579
T B — Google review
A serene array of small colorful streets and housing makes this colonial gem a wonderful place to visit.
It’s also a perfect match with the so called “white city” (due to its limestone buildings) of Arequipa. It’s worth to spend a few hours here to make the trip to Arequipa complete.
Zoltan Lukac — Google review
Totally worth the price (40 Soles, ~10€)
We spent the whole forenoon there. A really fascinating and beautiful building. Very intersting to see, how the nons were living.
Claudia Fuchshuber — Google review
This is a peaceful experience and a look back at an interesting historic period. The entry fee is cheap and can be paid by card, but a guided tour requires cash after entering the facility. Enjoy some peace and quiet, and some beautiful architecture in this working convent / museum.

Must visit when in Arequipa.

The Monastery of Santa Catalina, located in Arequipa, Peru, is a stunning complex that dates back to the 16th century. It served as a cloister for Dominican nuns for centuries, creating a self-contained city within the city.
//The monastery features vibrant colors, intricate architecture, and serene courtyards, offering a glimpse into colonial-era religious life.
// Today, it serves as a museum, allowing visitors to explore its maze-like streets, chapels, and living quarters, providing insight into the history and culture of Arequipa.
Steve Rubin — Google review
Santa Catalina Monastery is one of the most beautiful places in Arequipa. It’s colorful, picturesque and tranquil, and all the plants make it lively and vibrant. The Monastery extends the hour on Thursdays for visitors to enjoy the night view, and tickets can be bought online. When I visited in December, there’s no line waiting for the tickets.

Fantastic buildings and good information in English. It was much bigger than expected and beautiful. Ticket price is quite expensive at 45 soles but is worth it.

Is a fascinating and historic site with a rich history. It was founded in 1579 by Maria de Guzman, a rich widow, who decided to spend her fortune to create a convent dor woman from noble Spanish families. Visiting Santa Catalina Monastery offers a unique glimpse into the past, allowing travellers to appreciate both the religious and architectural aspects of this remarkable site
Horatiu Baiasu — Google review
A beautiful don't-miss location in Arequipa. Take the guide (10S per person) as they have a very well crafted itinerary and details about the monastery you will not get otherwise. The tour takes about one hour, and the history of the monastery takes you back to a different epoch of cultural and societal practices.
Nuno L. — Google review
The Monasterio de Santa Catalina is a place with many stories and history to tell. It's right in the heart of Arequipa, and you get to walk through a minimum of two hours worth of different rooms and set up's to experience how the nuns had lived in the past. It's beautiful, historical, and well preserved to provide an accurate picture of the past.
The vibrant Historical Centre of Arequipa is a hub of cultural and historical attractions. At the heart of the center lies Plaza de Armas, home to the grand Basilica Cathedral showcasing religious art and artifacts. The 16th-century Santa Catalina Monastery, built from volcanic stone, offers guided tours through its village-like complex. Visitors can explore markets brimming with alpaca wool crafts, traditional sweets, and jewelry.
The Cathedral Museum in Arequipa showcases paintings and jewelry from centuries ago, as well as pieces of the church's impressive 1000-pipe organ. The museum is located half a mile (one kilometer) away from the monastery, and offers beautiful rooftop views of Arequipa and its white volcanic rock buildings.
Very reasonable/low price entry. Mandatory tour guide that takes 30-60m is very good overall & informative. Extra bonus with this museum tour is the rooftop with spectacular views of the mountains and plaza
Jason Parmar — Google review
Worth visiting. Ticket comes with an inhouse guide. Museum entrance is at the left. The museum includes access to tje church interior, roofdeck, and belltowers. No picture taking of the church's gold and silver collections at the galleries. The exit will lead you at the back lined with different cafes and dinning options.
leo lobarbio — Google review
Great idea to do if you are in Arequipa.
General overview:
Center of the city. Gives you a view of the cathedral when it’s closed to the public. So less people.
A tour around the museum looking at old religious bits. Fairly interesting
The history of the earthquake that meant they had to rebuild some of the church.
Rooftop view of the city and the 3 volcanos.
Practical bits:
Cash only tickets 10sol per person
Also strong recommended that you pay the guide - others have said 5 sol. We have 5USD for two, as we did not have any sol at the time.
(they make a bit of a point about saying they are not paid, and rely on tips)
If you get a good guide, which we did, and just 4 of us in the group. Really good tour.
Recommended even just for the roof top views!

This museum could use many upgrades and some cleanup, painting or modernization, but it is so interesting and fantastic that it gets a “five” anyhow. I loved the historical sections, temple art, bronze sculptures. Amazing collection! It vividly reminds me of the old Cairo Museum in its wealth and value of the collection. Same quality just different continent.

Lovely place. Best part about it is that it is situated in the center of the city so all the nearby areas can be easily reached in lesser time. The rooftop views are simply marvelous and so so beautiful. I'll just go once again for the rooftop views.
hritik shreekumar — Google review
The tour guides weren’t very enthusiastic and kept harping me for a tip at the end which I found unprofessional. The church was beautiful and a good way to spend an afternoon. Incredible views of the 3 volcanoes on the roof.
nabska — Google review
Nice tour guide. 10s entry then you should tip the guide. Annoying structure but beautiful views from top and interesting collection of pieces
Thomas B — Google review
Beautiful building with Neo classical style architecture. Nothing special on the inside, just like a regular Catholic Church with some museum prices of display.
It is mandatory to enter with a guide (additional 5 soles per person).

The museum cost 10 soles for the musuem which contains collections of crowns and other things used in the church, including bishop's processions and costumes. You have to pay another 5 soles for "a guide" who was completely useless to me.
You can visit the church for free after 5pm on weekdays and 11am on Sundays.

Plaza de Armas, Basílica catedral de, Arequipa 04001, Peru
The museum showcases the frozen body of a 12-year-old Inca girl, Juanita, who was sacrificed in the 15th century. The exhibit includes artifacts from her life and mummified remains. The museum is located in a colonial building and is free to visit, but visitors are expected to tip the staff at the end of the tour.
A lovely to place to go to. We had a tour guide Javier. Such a knowledgeable and funny guy. I'm not in particularly a museum kind of person but I will definitely say it was a good visit and most certainly not boring. It is a great experience. Another good reason to be in Peru.
hritik shreekumar — Google review
A great museum but terrible business model. Despite a recent price hike from 20 to 25 soles per person, the *mandatory* guide is not included in the price. The museum is self explanatory and great to visit alone - having to go with a guide which is not paid by the museum and has no set price was disturbing at best and seems dishonest towards both the guides and visitors.
Pierrick L — Google review
This museum is dedicated to the child sacrifice rituals of the Incan people. The guides are mandatory, but they are super knowledgeable. It’s a quick tour about a fascinating yet gruesome topic. It’s a bit pricey for not being able to wonder at your own pace or take photos, but you’ll learn a ton.
mamagaldino — Google review
It was so interesting learning about Juanita and other children sacrificed to the mountain gods in Peru.
Fascinating video and exhibit.
There was a Spanish, French and English guide when we visited.
Sharon J — Google review
Musuem only designed to expose the children momified by frost and the different objects found with them. Despite its minimalistic presentation, the tour with a guide (clear in english) is quite enjoyable and you can easily imagine how those children where sacrified. You will of course not be deceaved by the momie exposed.

It is a very pleasant experience to be able to see a mummy with my own eyes. I recommend visiting it.
Tico Pura Vida — Google review
Very interesting museum/tour! It starts with an interesting 20 minute video with some background on the discovery of 'Juanita'. Then a guide will take you through the museum in approximately 30 minutes, finishing with the ice mummy.
Guides are available in English. Do bring some extra cash as a tip, because all the guides are volunteers!
Video has English audio. Subtitles are available in Spanish, German, and Italian.

I feel the museum is not worth price (25 soles for foreigners) for what you get. On top of that you it’s mandatory to take a tip-based guided tour. So far so good and I wouldn’t mind the price and tips. However our tour was extremely rushed - our tour guide got us through the five exhibition halls in around 10 minutes. After the tour you are not allowed to return to the exhibition halls to see things in more detail or read the explanations/information. So it was kind of disappointing.
Michael Buchhauser — Google review
Pretty good experience. I read some other reviews that said the tour felt rushed, maybe a tiny bit but our guide was informative and stopped at almost every display in each room to tell us about it.
They could definitely get some better speakers for the introduction movie, which itself was interesting, at least the parts I could hear.
There were lots of artifacts over 500 years old that are well preserved, especially the ponchos. Of course, seeing the frozen Juanita mummy at the end was very unique. For the price (25 soles for foreigners), it's worth a visit
J B — Google review
The museum is located in an elegant colonial house. Tours available in english and spanish for 20 soles are mandatory (because of covid they say), the visit lasts exactly 30 rushed minutes with 0 flexibility, the first 6 minutes of which are spent watching an outdated video in spanish with poorly translated english subtitles (like youtube cc). The museum is freezing (think cinemas in Thailand). There are a few rooms, with several glass cases per room. The explanations are rushed, but a couple of very nice items are exposed and it‘s interesting to see Juanita in her little freezer. Tips are expected at the end of the visit. Overpriced experience only worth doing if you have lots of time, but then again it only eats up 30-45 mins of your day.

Definitely recommend this tour. We did the tour in English with a fantastic guide named Maria. Super interesting artifacts and the stories are just incredible. Maria was so knowledgeable and welcoming of questions, she is so passionate about the information it's more like listening to a story than to a guided museum tour. The whole thing only takes about 45 mins. I'm not generally a tour OR museum person, but I actually enjoyed this. Great experience

The only bad thing for a tourist was that they offered a guide to see the museum. I thought nothing was in English. I got help from the guide and saw that the same information was written in English too. I had to give a tip. This is so nonsense.
The museum is worth seeing

It was great to visit. It's not a large museum, actually quite a small but there are many interesting exhibits in the museum. The guide explained in English and she's very knowledgeable and we asked her many questions.
When I met "JUANITA" my heart hurt a bit...

I want to warn others of the SCAM on tipping. At the pay desk they baldly state 25 soles is for (foreigners) entrance only but you have to tip the guide at the end. Now bearing in mind you cannot go in without a guide, they are clearly paid to do exactly that. Like other reviews state the tour is a bit rushed and we were not encouraged to read the museum information placards but listen only to the guide.
At the end the guide turned on us and repeated that we now had to tip. I overpaid 5 soles each and feel a fool. Bearing in mind we tip our drivers and tour guides 10-20 soles per day, 5 soles for a 20 min guided tour is way too much. If you do feel obligated to pay, I suggest 1-2 soles.
You will see other reviews below also reference this tipping scam.
No photos added as you are not allowed to do that.

Highly recommended. The video and guided tour were well worth the entrance fee. The story of the sacrificed Inca child's discovery and preservation was absolutely fascinating and disturbing in equal measure. Excellent guided tour.

Arequipa's iconic Plaza de Armas is a historic centerpiece of the city that is home to the city's cathedral and colonial buildings housing restaurants and cafes. The plaza is flanked by arches made of white volcanic rock that give it its characteristic look. The Katari Hotel at Plaza de Armas offers comfortable accommodations with free WiFi access in Arequipa.
Beautiful square! During the day great to take some amazing photos of the center of the so called “white city” while at night in transforms into a street art exhibition - there are a lot of bands playing live music but also other artists showing their talents.

This plaza is beautiful. The center park is full of green lush areas with mature trees and floral gardens. There is always some sort of activity taking place. During the late afternoon and into the evening there are many small cart vendors offering food and small gift items. The roads leading into the plaza are lined with restaurants and clothing stores. Make sure to visit during daylights and nighttime as the atmosphere completely changes.

Beautiful square - one of the most beautiful I have seen in South America. I love that there are no cars and it is not filled with street vendors. You can walk around here without being attacked by sellers.
The church is amazing and the buildings on the other 3 sides are a perfect match to the square.

Beautiful central square of the city of Arequipa. It's main attraction is the iconic Basilic Cathedral of Arequipa, one of the most iconic cathedrals in the country whose construction dates since the Spanish colonization of Peru. Different concerts and cultural events takes place during the year. You can view the agenda of these events at the city of Arequipa"s website.

This is THE meeting spot in the center of Historic Arequipa. Often crowded with a mix of tourists, locals and vendors, you can often see traditional dances and the occasional street protest. The Plaza is in the shadow of the Arequipa Cathedral and City Hall. Tourists WILL be approached to buy souvenirs, tours of the city and surrounding areas, and to dine in the mediocre restaurants surrounding the plaza.

The Plaza de Armas Arequipa is very safe, peaceful, and beautiful. There is always a lot of police present at this location. Tacna Cathedral is a stunning neo-renaissance edifice that was constructed in 1875 under the supervision of Gustave Eiffel, the renowned architect who designed the Eiffel Tower. Although it may not be as grandiose as some other cathedrals in Europe, it boasts an exquisite front facade that is particularly striking when viewed at night.

It's a great place to be in a mass, however the cathedral needs maintenance.
The Paseo Cívico de Tacna is a well-designed square featuring a bronze fountain and an impressive arch built in 1957 to pay tribute to the victims of the War of the Pacific. This paved plaza offers a beautiful environment with its clean surroundings, pleasant weather averaging around 65 degrees Fahrenheit, and friendly locals. It serves as an excellent venue for socializing and enjoying the city's charm, offering a serene atmosphere filled with light and beauty.

Historic centre of Tacna. Beautiful architecture and design. (The front of the cathederal is "mirrowed" in the stone pavement in front of it.) The arch is in the form of a bullet and has statues of Grau and Bolognesi on either side. This commemorates the War of the Pacific.

It is a beautiful place to go for a walk because it has a picturesque architecture and a charm environment.
The Mercado Central is a bustling shopping hub that houses various vendors offering fresh fruit, meat and locally made handicrafts. In addition to this, it boasts of popular restaurants that serve delicious breakfast to visitors. The market is well-maintained and clean making it a preferred choice for shoppers who always buy here. One can also find quality Olive oil at the renowned vendor "Comercial Blanquita" G2.
This market is clean ... Neat , I would definitely buy here ALWAYS!

Its a place where we can experience local food at a fraction of the price compared to tourist restaurants. Very competitive on that matter because there's many Chileans also working there. You can compare it to a huge grocery store and bargain store all in one. Fruits and vegetables are very cheap and they bring them in large quantities, what's favorable to tourists looking for local fruits or veggies because they sell it buy the kilo. I myself got 5 mangoes for a dollar (3.80 soles) and broccoli for 50 cents (about a pound) - that's just a small example. Its not really a touristic place, its a local community commercial center. Still, great to find amazing bargains!

Decent food but way too pricey considering the surroundings inside the market aren't very nice or appealing. Would have rather gone somewhere nicer for the same price

A traditional place, recently refurbished, with many different things, starting for small convenience stores, with local products, milk, chocolates and any sort of thing for cooking or cleaning. LOL.
In the second floor you cand find a nice display of natural juice makers, who tempt you with fresh fruit slices for free like mangoes and melons. It is very cheap and juices are awesome because of the quality of the organic local fruits, tasty and aromatic. And for less than a dollar you can drink the WHOLE BLENDER. Yes, the whole blender.
There's a hidden sublevel where you can buy alcohol and cigarrettes from all around the world for very good prices (JW black for $40 bottle) and also there's nice cheap place to get a manicure or pedicure with nail design for less than $3 dollars.
In the surroundings you can find pirate buses to Arica, most of them, chilean. Good option to avoid crowded buses at the international station.

The open air museum of Petroglifos de Miculla showcases ancient rock carvings depicting hunting and dancing figures in arid landscapes, believed to be centuries old. This cultural site holds great significance in Tacna and can be accessed via a city tour or by car. The museum is located away from the city but is included in the tour package that costs around 30-40 soles (official currency of Peru).
It has a wonderful view and verybrustic bridges around.

The petroglyphs of Miculla are not located in near the city but they are also part of the city tour, which costs between 30 to 40 soles (official currency in Peru ~ 9 to 13 USD~)

Morro de Arica is a prominent hill that offers stunning panoramic views of the city and coastline. Standing at 110 meters, it provides a perfect vantage point to witness breathtaking sunsets. The hill also houses the Museum of History and Weapon, making it a dual attraction. At its summit stands an 11-meter tall sculpture called The Christ of Peace, symbolizing peace between Peru and Chile. Visitors can enjoy not only the natural beauty but also learn about the historical significance of the region.

El Morro is a beautiful hill that you can climb on in just 15 minutes. On the top you will see huge part of Arica. There are reminders of an important historical point - Battle of Arica during The War of the Pacific, you can visit a museum there too. Locals are jogging, hiking or biking there. I am giving 2 stars because of all the trash there, it is shameful and extremely disrespectful to this place and I dont understand how it can be so dirty since the place is locked down during night and we've seen a lot of employees there (so somebody could be allocated to pick up the trash!).

St. Mark's Cathedral in Arica is a must-visit attraction, designed by the renowned French engineer Gustave Eiffel, who also built the Eiffel Tower. The cathedral was constructed on the site of the old Mother Church of Arica, which was destroyed in an earthquake in 1868. Its interior features stunning cast iron design and unique wooden paneling typical of Chilean Catholic churches. During Christmas season, it becomes a vibrant hub of music and colorful carnival celebrations.
Beautiful metal building. Small but efficient space. Beautiful statues inside.

The San Marcos Church, the current cathedral of Arica was ordered to be built by Peruvian President Don José Balta in 1871 to Gustave Eifell's workshops in France, finishing its construction in 1875. In those years the Eifell workshops were important suppliers of public works in Latin America, and delivered buildings, bridges and all kinds of structures mainly of cast iron packed in drawers that were shipped and then assembled at the destination.
Originally the church was destined to the Peruvian spa of Ancón, but the earthquake of 1868 completely destroyed the old Matrix Church of Arica and its assembly in the city of Arica was resolved

El Laucho beach is a good place where you can Swim , Sun Bathe and Relax.
However, it beggars to say how little if not, no improvement has been made to make it a better place. This is due to the fact that at times the water and shore sand is dirty, most beach goers leave their rubbish lying around and in the most extreme, at the Northern End next to the Kayak Rental , there are 2 tents, which have been there since December 2019, an eyesore for the Tourist, at a place thar prohibits Camping.
Its a clear reflection of an unkempt City.

This is a nice little museum not too far away from Arica. It's a little difficult to get too as the only major sign points as a dirt road, it's a billboard just before you enter town (if coming from the direction of Arica). The center itself is well kept and the museum that houses the mummies does a good job of showcasing and educating without being overwhelming. Allocate 45 minutes to see everything on display.
Note: some of these mummies are on display at the Pre-Colombian Museum in Santiago so if you miss them here make sure you see them there.
The Presencias Tutelares sculpture, located in a breathtaking and otherworldly setting, is an impressive display of artistry by the talented Juan Diaz Fleming. The Iglesia San Ildefonso de Putre is an incredibly captivating and impeccably maintained church. However, it receives a slight deduction in its rating due to an incident involving a staff member who prohibited visitors from taking photographs inside. While it is within her rights to do so, her demeanor was perceived as unfriendly by some. This unfortunate occurrence represents a first-time experience for those affected.

We did the one day tour from Putre to Lauca National Park. We only stopped in Putre to do this tour. The guide was punctual and on time and stopped whenever we wanted to take photos. He also answered our questions and checked we understood given our language barriers. But he didn’t offer up much information at all. However he took us to the CONAF office of the park and there the Ranger gave us a great little tour along the path beside the lake. We thought he might of done this because the guide spoke excellent English but we noticed the guide met all private cars as well. Then we drove along the desert route back to Putre stopping at all the CONAF points along the way and a stop in Parinacota to see the cute little church. It was a stormy rainy day but still spectacular scenery. One of our sons had a cold but he wanted to come but just stay in the car. We then returned to Putre for lunch and the tour finished. We don’t know if the tour finished early because our son was sick or that was the end - but it would have been nice to have been asked. Honestly, we felt like this was only a little more than hiring a car and doing it ourselves, especially as the best info we got was from the CONAF Ranger and the best part of the tour is the beautiful scenery. You can also see most of this scenery when you come from La Paz on the bus, which we did the day before (but of course you can’t stop and enjoy it).

The guides are all very attentive, kind and know their respective regions well. The picnics are excellent, we always ate very well. The passage from San Pedro de Atacama on the first night in Bolivia (at 4600m) was a little rough for altitude sickness (we should have prepared ourselves better or added one more night at an intermediate altitude to get used to it).
Communication with Gabriel was sometimes difficult, but he was extremely friendly and always answered our questions. The tour went well and it is an agency that I recommend.

What an amazing place. It's like nowhere else! The high altitude lake and bird life are very special. Views of snow topped volcanoes, caves to climb up to, the boardwalk across the wetlands, llamas, alpacas and vicuñas, craggy mountains and thermal springs to soak in, all make this a unique part of the world. And a visit to the tiny Andean village of Parinacota is an absolute must with its adobe church from the 17th century and the tiny school with about 4 students.
The region of Arica y Parinacota is one of Chile's primary administrative divisions, consisting of two provinces: Arica and Parinacota. It shares boundaries with Peru's Department of Tacna in the northern direction, while to the east lie Bolivia's La Paz and Oruro departments. Furthermore, it is also adjacent to Chile's Tarapacá Region in the southern area.

I'll never travel to Uyuni without this trip planner again
Laguna Parinacota is an exquisite destination, although the route to reach it can be quite challenging. It is recommended to start the ascent early in the Bolivian winter season and descend before 4:00 p.m. due to potential river rise. The journey is truly worthwhile as this lake offers breathtaking beauty. Local guides or companions are advised for a safer trip, and a sturdy SUV or high-clearance vehicle is preferable given the difficult road conditions.
Laguna Roja: Is it worth the effort? Oh yes!
Laguna Roja is a remote lagoon in the Atacama Desert of Chile. It is located about 3 hours from the closest village, Camiña, or 5.5 hours from Cariquima. The road to the lagoon is mostly gravel, with the last 1.5 hours on a very bumpy road.
But the journey is worth it! Laguna Roja is an incredibly beautiful lagoon with stunning red rock formations surrounding it. The best time to visit is on a sunny day, when the colors of the lagoon and rocks are at their most vibrant.
There are a medium red lagoon, a small green lagoon, and a dark mustard-colored lagoon nearby.
Only about 60-100 people visit Laguna Roja each month (and not all year round), so it is a relatively uncrowded place to enjoy the natural beauty of the Atacama Desert.
Tips:
Be sure to check the weather forecast before you go, as the lagoon is not worth visiting on a cloudy day.
Bring plenty of water and sunscreen, as there is no shade at the lagoon.

The important thing is to go up early and get down before 4 p.m. due to the rise of the river in the Bolivian winter season. It's absolutely worth the trip, it's wonderful.

I went to the Red/Green and Yellow Lagoon.
Nice place and it is worth the physical and vehicle sacrifice. And when you go along the dirt road, you will face a diamond point, continue in the direction of the Caritaya reservoir.
So that everyone knows, you have to take it yes or yes...
- An extra tank of fuel (two or three drums full of Fuel) for the vehicle since on the road there is a section that is not a road, it is just stone and rocks and therefore makes you drive very tense and with luck at 10 km/h h .. And yes it must be 4x4, that stretch that is about 15 kilometers and takes you two hours or more to pass. if you want to take care of the vehicle.
- You have to cross a river by vehicle and when you reach the lagoons you must cross another low river on foot. Since with the vehicle you arrive close but on the other side of the river.
- The day before, drink a lot of water and bring a lot of water to drink since the geographical altitude weighs you down and lip balm.
- Bring an extra towel to dry your feet for when you cross the river.
- Go very early (arrive in Camiña no later than 8 am) since the ideal is to return to Camiña during the day, so as not to pass the cobblestone section at night.
- I recommend a tall vehicle to prevent stones from leaving you in the air or breaking the vehicle from below. (It happened to me)
- Many are confused with the path. But I tell them that they must get to where they see a small stone house and continue further... since the GPS or Google Maps do not show the way. Consider that the lands where the lagoons are are private, so RESPECT and TAKE CARE of the place, do not leave garbage of any kind!!!
- Once in Camiña you must register with the police before going to Laguna.
-And another very important thing is that the place appears as Parinacota lagoon on the maps.

Lean todo les servira si es que piensan ir .. Saludos
( Me paso)

(Translated by Google) Laguna Roja, the crimson lake. Lake Parinakota. Arrived on December 18, 2016.
I think this is probably the first time in history that someone has reached it on their own on a bicycle (there is evidence).
The road to get here was extremely difficult, and the road to escape and reach the national highway was even more difficult, literally putting my life on the line.
More than three years of bicycle travel experience, the physical strength and acclimatization to climb a 6000m peak as if it were a picnic, and 50 well-calculated meals. With these things, my life is on the line.
Although there is a road on the map, it has already weathered and is buried in sand, leaving us with no choice but to follow the traces of what was once a road. Since there are no people living there, there is no place to get water or food, so the only option is to find spring water.
It is better not to go there by bicycle. I'll probably die. Even if you don't die, it will be the biggest test of your life.
It is possible to get there with a 4WD vehicle, but it is quite difficult.

(Translated by Google) It is a beautiful lagoon that stands out for the color of the blood-colored water but also highlights the yellow lagoon and another small green one... without a doubt a magnificent place but getting there is somewhat complicated due to the geographical height and the state of the road. In some parts it is almost impossible to continue... one of my tips is that if you do not go by 4X4 car or finally 4X2, it is better not to go and go early so that you can return in daylight because it is very easy to get lost.

Isla Incahuasi, also known as Inkawasi, is a rocky outcrop located in the middle of Salar de Uyuni's vast salt flats. It features giant Trichocereus cacti and is surrounded by a flat white sea of hexagonal salt tiles.
Must see when visiting the salt flats. You need to pay an entrance fee to visit the island. There is also a WC in the island. Unique views from the top and all around you just the salt flats. The amount of cactuses is impressive.

Nice oasis in the middle of nowhere, we had breakfast here on salt tables and chairs. You have to pay a small sum to visit the hill, but it is worth it in my opinion. The view from the top is quite nice, especially at dawn or while the sun is still rising low on the horizon. You can even camp close to the hill for the night, if you need to plant a tent or something.

We enjoyed this. We paid to go in and it as a short bit of a hike to get to the top. Some people were winded. It's in the middle of no where and incredible. I say pay- it supports the people who live there. We met some other kids that just walked around it to find the cactus on the out rim that looked like a mans XXXX. They said they found it. That was their priority :p

Beautiful place in the middle of a salty desert.
You can climb the island and see the grand view of the Uyuni desert.
Uyuni Salt Flat, known as the world's largest salt desert, is a breeding ground for flamingos and an awe-inspiring spectacle. The expansive terrain resembles a desert or arctic tundra, but comprises of salt up to 30 feet thick. This prehistoric site was once part of Lago Minchin, a salt lake that covered much of southwest Bolivia before drying up and leaving behind seasonal puddles and several salt pans.
Such a beautiful and majestic place on this earth! Mi encanta! Worth a visit! ✨🌙♥️

Incredible place. Unique experience. I visited the salar while traveling in peru. Unfortunately I was not feeling very well and I was not able to fully live the experience. It is an hard tour, it lasts 3 days, but it allows you to see breathtaking places. We took part to an organized tour, with jeeps, which made it more adventurous. Highly recommended

This place is INSANE. It seems like from another planet. I was afraid it wouldn’t meet my expectations but I couldn’t have never imagined how amazing it actually was. I went on March and the weather was perfect so I was able to see the mirror effect and stunning sunsets there. When it gets windy you can see waves and it’s beautiful, and think when the wind disappears it’s just quiet and infinite and perfectly beautiful. Wouldn’t change this trip for anything in the world!!!

Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni is considered one of the most extreme and remarkable vistas in all of South America, if not Earth. Stretching more than 4,050 square miles of the Altiplano, it is the world’s largest salt flat, left behind by prehistoric lakes evaporated long ago. Here, a thick crust of salt extends to the horizon, covered by quilted, polygonal patterns of salt rising from the ground.
At certain times of the year, nearby lakes overflow and a thin layer of water transforms the flats into a stunning reflection of the sky. This beautiful and otherworldly terrain serves as a lucrative extraction site for salt and lithium—the element responsible for powering laptops, smart phones, and electric cars. In addition to local workers who harvest these minerals, the landscape is home to the world's first salt hotel and populated by road-tripping tourists. The harsh beauty and desolateness of Salar de Uyuni can make for an incredible experience or a logistical nightmare. Here’s a guide to help:
Located at the crux of Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina, the logistics and length of your trip to Salar de Uyuni will depend where you’re coming from. Tours originate from three main places:
Uyuni, Bolivia: The most popular jumping-off point for salt flats tours, Uyuni is a small, dusty town packed with tourism agencies in Plaza Arce, its main square. Travelers can book tours in advance online, through tour offices in La Paz, or they can simply arrive in Uyuni and peruse the options in town. Since Uyuni is so close to the salt flats, tourists can easily book day trips. Flights from La Paz to Uyuni can be booked through Amaszonas and BoA (one hour, about $130 round-trip). Overnight buses from La Paz are available with Trans Omar and Todo Turismo (10-12 hours, $30 to $40 each way).
San Pedro de Atacama, Chile: Agencies drive travelers to the border before handing the tour over to a Bolivian operator. Due to the distance, this is a three-day tour.
Tupiza, Bolivia: This is the best starting point for travelers coming from Argentina. Tour operators recommend four-day tours from Tupiza, visiting Salar de Uyuni on the final day.

Great experience. 👍
This is probably (and most likely) the only thing that you will do in Uyuni 😀
A few notes:
- in my opinion 1 day tour is enough (if you decide to do more than 1 day, make sure you ask about the accommodation and heating at night in the accommodation, and also electricity as some of the salt falts don't have electricity and mainly operated by a few hours of fuel generators a day)
- the weather can get quiet cold and harsh so I recommend have proper warm clothing.
- bring a blanket or two from your hotel if you can
- take a warm hat, scarf and gloves. The cold wind is not forgiving.
- take 50+ sunscreen and apply generously if you don't want to suffer the day after. Don't forget to put sun protection on your lips and your ears, if you don't want painful and brittle cracks on them the day after.
- Altitude won't be in your favour, so if you are not used to it sooner or later you will feel it, best remedy drink lots of water and chew on coca leaves (locals swear on its remedial power for altitude skiness)
- the main attractions of 1 day tour are:
1 Train cemetery (this is actually only 5 mins drive from Uyuni itself),
2 driving on the salt,
3 salt hotel (generally that's were tours have their lunch there, but there is no cooking as there is no electricity),
4 pictures with some dianasuer toys (have fun you will be suprised with the results),
5 cactus island (30 BOB cash entry fee which includes moderate hike of 40 to 60mins return, plus you can use tye bathrooms unlimited, rare case in this area)
6 Sunset (this one was the highlight for me)
- if you are going by yourself make sure take some rain boots as towards the end and depending on the season there is a pool of water on the salt.
- if you are going by yourself make sure ask locals on how to get there, apparently on the map there seems to be some short cuts which may end up in a disaster based on what I've heard from locals
- the shared day tours generally cost between 30 to 50 euros which include, food, 4WD transport, an English tour guide, and rain boots.

The Salar was formed as a result of transformations between several prehistoric lakes that existed around forty thousand years ago but had all evaporated over time. It is now covered by a few meters of salt crust, which has an extraordinary flatness with the average elevation variations within one meter over the entire area of the Salar. The crust serves as a source of salt and covers a pool of brine, which is exceptionally rich in lithium. The large area, clear skies, and exceptional flatness of the surface make the Salar ideal for calibrating the altimeters of Earth observation satellites. Following rain, a thin layer of dead calm water transforms the flat into the world's largest mirror, 129 km (80 mi) across.

Amazing must see place. One thing to bear in mind is make sure to get a good tour guide as in one who would try to communicate with you, help you take fantastic photos and gets involved a bit and shows some interest of the place as we had one who just wasn't so bothered and a bit rude, we had a couple who was told one thing by agency and he told them something different. So in other words make sure you know what your paying for and make sure to get it as again we were told certain things would be included in tour and we paid, as we got to the cacti island and also just to hike along the low hill parts of volcano whilst others went up, we were charged extra money for that, so quite misleading. Also it's worth to invest in luxury accommodation especially if you plan to do 2 nights or more (you won't regret it). The place itself is amazing to see, it's a shame about the tour guide.

One of the craziest places on the planet. If you go when there is a layer of water on the salt, the sky reflects off the water and blends ground and sky together, so you feel as if you are walking in the clouds. A very surreal experience!

I heard about it for the first time on TV and thought I'd like to go. It was extremely far away, time consuming, and difficult. However, it is the best scenery in my life that erases all the hardships. It's a very mysterious scene where you don't know where the boundary between the sky and the horizon is.
