The view was pretty good. They take a good care of the garden. There were several themed garden we can visit and look around but some of them were closed or available for private booking only. We have to be careful there because there were soo many mosquitos. Make sure you wear a long sleeves and pants if you dont wanna get bites. Oh one more thing, the air there was super hot at that afternoon, there were no wind blows. About the food, I didn't eat there so i can't comment.

Had a nice walk around these well kept gardens in late May, many flowers and tree species and a couple small lakes with fish in, a nice play area for the younger generation and some nice shady spots to cower from under the sun, also a cafe for drinks and food. The staff very friendly, thanks again for booking our taxi back, dreaded no Wi-Fi, very nice mornings stroll.

Great place if you are looking for quiet and natural green experience. You can find lots of beautiful scenery, from lotus pond to herbs garden. There's playing ground for children, duck boats for water experience. I love them all.
Not so far from main road. Accesible place, you can find it through google maps.

Beautiful natural scenery, fresh air which is hard to find in city, there's some activity too like fishing, row a boat, etc but i hardly find information about that. Make sure you use mosquitoes repellent before you go here.

Nice place for enjoying outdoor with family or friends. Here we can find artificial river where we sail it with rental boat or raft; thematic flower gardens, resting huts and of course restaurant when we need something to eat. If I'm not mistaken, there's live band too played in some occasions.

Jl. Rakutta Sembiring No.1, Naga Pita., Siantar Martoba, Pematang Siantar City, North Sumatra 21137, Indonesia
Established in 1936, the Pematang Siantar Zoo or THPS is a relaxed and unique animal facility located in North Sumatra. The zoo boasts an extensive collection of various species of mammals, birds, and reptiles spread across four hectares of well-maintained land. In addition to the animal exhibits, THPS also houses an animal hospital and museum.
Cool conservation zoo, variously curated animals. I assume that the animals came from illegal ownership. The reptiles are awesome, the birds are kinda mainstream except the ostrich, I'm vibing with the mammals especially the big cats even though there are only bengal tigers and lions! THE TIGERS HAVE BABIES!
Tyrannosaur — Google review
Cheap enough admission, and the aviary is by far the best thing about this place. The caged mammals look positively mentally ill, and one poor orangutan was trying to shut it all out. The crocodiles appear to have given up on life. Suitable for children / adults who are not old enough to understand what long-term captivity does to animals.
Ian Anderson — Google review
I have never had a good expectation for a local zoo but Bali Zoo. But, this place has changed my mind. Eventhough there was no giraffe, but Happily, I saw more animals even the rare ones. They seemed healthy and maintained well. Located at the heart of Siantar City, around 2-3 hrs driving from Medan, North Sumatera, Indonesia. My kids were happy and we have learnt a lot. A little suggestion for this zoo are around the bin and the Wahana. As many people came and had food or snacks, they need to easliy find the bin otherwise more visitor would throw dirty things everywhere. Lastly, the playground was too yesterday and looked unimpressive, it needs more development at this area. Lastly, I thanked the owner for introducing this Zoo. Welldone.
Irwan Zaily — Google review
It was a good experience. Kids friendly, many places for kids to play. Much better than years ago, need more improvements though. Bring back the elephants please, and also other will be best.
Sondang Novi — Google review
A recommended place to go if you come to Siantar, especially if you're family with kids.
Please note: DO NOT feed the animals with your food, they will get sick because of it.

Zoo is clean & well maintened, amazing place for kid learning any kinds of animals.
Rori Bramantyo — Google review
The zoo was well-maintained, clean, and the animals collection quite complete. The animals condition is also very well.
The ticket price was affordable (IDR 30k/person). Toilets are also clean and in sufficient number.
Signs for the route to start the journey in the zoo has to be improved so that the visitors can be easily enjoy the entire collection. Overall worth to visit.
Hadi Hendra — Google review
The zoo is pretty small but decent. Has various collection of animals that are well cared by the keepers. Located in the city center that enables anyone an easy access
Natano Glori — Google review
Don't expect too much and you'll be happy. Small zoo, no elephants, giraffes, or rhinos, just lions, tiger, bears, zebras. Muddy floors, small cages, blurred glasses, malnutritioned animals especially the birds... Just like zoos in any third-world countries.
The most interesting animals are the primates here. Some really like to interact with people as long as people throw some food to them. Well, feeding is prohibited here officially but people tend to ignore. The ducks at the center are not caged and can stand very close to people.
Two hours are very enough to go through everything but of course you can take extra time to enjoy the parks or children playgrounds.
T. Spark — Google review
There is no difference for weekend and weekdays entrance fee. (IDR 30000) Lots of animals inside. With booth selling ice cream, drinks and Kong Tong Coffee.
You can pay IDR 5000 to feed the rabbits.
You can ride of boat in small pond with extra fee.
One thing to concern is the parking.
Make sure you ask how much the parking fee is before you park your car.
As i was charged IDR 30000 for a car.

Monumental statue of Kwan Im, Buddhist goddess of compassion, within a riverside temple complex.
One of the best buddhist temple in north sumatra. So many of the Buddha's historical statues that you can study. Everyone free to come insite here.
Pandi Riady Irawan Siregar — Google review
The name of the temple is Vihara Avalokitesvara. The name Avalokitesvara itself has various meanings and translated as Guan Shi Yin Phu Sa / Kwan Im, as a big statue of the goddess is there as the icon.
This is a worship place for Buddhism, Taoism and Confusianism... Not really a tourist area. When you entered the main gate, the statue is on the left hand side whilst most of the religious ritual is at the right side., included a columbarium, where the ashes of ancestors is kept.
Compared with my first visit around 15 years ago... The statue area seems need some renovation. Visitor is not allowed to climb up to the plaza. Hope the foundation with the help of local government can raise the fund for this...

I like this place. The sculpture is beautiful, its detail is really good. I enjoy a lot to walk to this site, because it just like i went to old time, how Chinese people live in Indonesia, it really shows the plurality of Indonesia. As there are Melayu, Chinese, and Indian ethnic in this place

Really cool stop! The authentic Indian reservation was really neat. The museum has a lot of cool artifacts. The neatest I think was the genealogy dating back to Adam & Eve. Would definitely recommend.

I went for the traditional dancing, but that has been stopped and hasn't happened since COVID apparently. But it was nice to walk around and explore the grounds. I did so alone today, as no one else was there. Just me and a lonely groundskeeper, oh and some cows.
The museum and gardens were nice! The house reminded me of a typical grandma's house with knick knacks and photos everywhere. The garden would be a lovely setting for a coffee or a tea. Unfortunately however, the cafe is also very much closed.
Luckily, I had a swim suit with me and I was able to jump in the lake for a swim.
Entry was 20k.

If you visited Sumatra, don't forget to see how the beautiful Toba Lake and then just cross the lake into Samosir Island. In Samosir Island, you must go to Huta museum. Its a traditional Sumatran houses.in there you can find the traditional dance, its called Tor-Tor dance.

The area is soo broad, from traditional house to museum of batak's historical heritage, then they also have coffe shop.
You also can enjoy the lake from here, it's have its garden, and also house of glass (well this is some kind of old house full of pictures of the former king) and you can stay here if you want(add cost ofc).
The funny part is when I met 2 foreigners and ask them about tickets, they got charged 20k, meanwhile I, as local 30k🤣

The place is nice to get some bataknese knowledge but theres no more dancer performance maybe cus lack of visitor.
We came here at 8.30 to 10 am and we are the only visitors here. I hope this place can attract more visitors later on.
This place is better than some museum near Tomok cus the authenticitiness.
Bryan R — Google review
The museum is interesting but small. Has some traditional objects with explanations but not all of them. You have some royal tumbs and some of the houses of the last king are therein really good shape for you to see. The entrance is 50 rupiah that I think is expensive for the amount of things that you can see in it but every day at 10.30 and 11.30 and Sunday at 11.30 only they do traditional dances for around 40 min each time that are worth to see.
Martín D'hers — Google review
Must visit place during your stay in SAMOSIR
Must take picture and watch sigale-gale dance from beginning. The ticket price is more expensive than the similiar show in Tomok, but it is worthy (a live music for the show here)
My recommendation: If you come here when the dance has already started 1/2 part or more, wait for next new session.

Batu Kursi Raja Siallagan, also known as the Stone Chair of King Siallagan, is a significant historical site located in the traditional Batak village of Ambarita. It offers a glimpse into the judicial history of the Batak people. The stone chairs are divided into two sets: one for official meetings and another for executions. Visitors can learn about the cruel practices that took place at this site in the past.
Love so much. Adorables vibes and ancient place to visit.
Rangga Yudhika — Google review
It was my second visit to this traditional village and this visit was personally dissappointing. The houses, courtyard and sites in the village core were renovated between 2021–2022; thus changing the heritage ambience, modernizing the visiting experience in an unsubtle way. The modernized surroundings made the experience different; renovation of the traditional houses façade and roof, paved courtyard and a modern version of the visitors theatre, submerged the heritage into a less true experience, rather synthetic one. The most related addition was actually the rest room and souvenir area. Personally my visit was not giving the expected, as compared to my last in 2019.
Raymond Valiant — Google review
Nice tourist attraction. 10,000 rupiah to get in. You can try on Batak clothes and hats for free, and pose in front of the Batak houses. After the attraction are a number of souvenir shops selling handicrafts. Minus one star because the written information in English about the execution areas and stone chairs is very limited. It would have been great to learn more.

Ramiro Romero — Google review
Went here at the late afternoon and the place is almost empty. It was a very traditional place of Batak Samosir. The place was originally a very sacrificial place in the past where the excecutions were held. I was told that the place is one of the most historical places in Somosir island. There's also Sigale-gale statue here but I haven't got chance to see it dancing.
Ludo Strait — Google review
Great story, worth visiting when you are on the island of Lake Toba!
The Stone Chairs of King Siallagan unfold the cruel practice on Samosir in the past. There are two sets of them. The first one was used to serve as the official meeting place, while the other as the site for executions. The first set consisted of orderly arranged stone chairs that were specifically intended for the king, the queen, clan elders, neighboring village leaders, invitees, and the datu or spiritual leaders. In case of trials, the king would lead the meetings to decide different types of punishments including executions against the criminals.
The second set features a similar arrangement but with the addition of a Long Stone Table. It was where executions took place. The prosecutors brought the death row inmate with ulos-covered eyes to the table, and then his body was laid face down with the neck in the stone basin while the executioner (Sang Datu) was ready with a very sharp sword. He slashed the neck and at once separated the prisoner’s head from his body. Further, Sang Datu stuck a single Panaluan wood into the person’s heart to remove his heart and liver for a meal. He also collected the blood for a drink. The prosecutors buried the head in a distant place and threw the body into the bush. The king and high-ranking officers enjoyed the meal.

This place already beautiful, Clean, and superb!!
Souvenir market is also great, make a local people can make money..
Just one thing from me is improve the price of ticketing, minimum 1 USD so this place also can more growth :)

A historical place that will give you both knowledge of culture and entertainment. If you visit it within a group, the local guide (which is descendants of the king siallagan) will explain to you about the history of the place and ask you to dance in traditional clothes (they provide it). Don't forget to prepare amount of money for donation, they will prepare some boxes for you to donate.
Lieni Nara — Google review
A rather small outdoor museum with a row of Batak houses, some still lived in. Also the stone chairs and the execution area from ancient times. There is very little information for the displays to presumably encourage you to hire a guide. The exit is through the curio store, with a variety of merchandise. At rp10000 a ticket, it's really worth going in if you are in Ambarita.

The Old Tomb of King Sidabutar, II & III is a historic cemetery containing tombs adorned with Batak tribal carvings and stone chairs arranged in a circle. Visitors can learn about the local traditions from an expert guide and witness performances of Si Gale Gale. The tomb is dedicated to King Sidabutar, his bodyguard and Anteng Melila - the woman he loved.

We went by scooter from Tuktuk - not well signposted so had to ask directions, showing a photo. We expected a much larger statue from the tourist brochures. Worth stopping in if you in the area but little to see in the tomb area. There is the Batak museum nearby and several souvenir shops in the alleys around. We were early morning 9am so were the only visitors.

Old Tomb of King Sidabutar I, II & III.
great story from the past that people can learn. They are about loyalty, romance, dan patience.
M Savrizal — Google review
An impressive complex of graves, albeit small, notably focusing on a few sarcophagus that were part of the long history of the Tomok area within the Samosir Island. Three main graves are representing three important rulers of the Sidabutar village, namely Ompu Soribuntu Sidabutar (the first king), his grandson Ompu Ni Ujung Barita Sidabutar, and finally the great-great grandson, Ompu Solompuan Sidabutar that died as recent as the early years of the 20th century. Two of these graves were sarcophagus, where the body of the deceased was laid to rest within a stone coffin above the ground; the third grave of Solompuan Sidabutar is buried as norMal graves would look as he had embraced christianity. Other small sarcophaguses are also present in the complex, retaining the remains of deceased generals of these famous kings. The complex is well kept and you may find a guide explaining you on the history. No entry fees but it is optional for visitor to adorn a small ulos shawl as sign of respect. You may tip the guide and the related staff that maintain the ulos shawls.

You can swim here. There is banana boat and canoe also. This place isn't good as before since there is too much stalls and warung which doesn't look good and neat. I think they really need to manage the placement for every restaurant and public area.

I love this place so much. A beautiful beach of a small village at Balige. It's about 242 kms away and take 5 hours and 30 minutes from Medan, North Sumatera Capital City. With an amazing sunset view, white sand beach, and (cristal) clear water.
And the best part is this place is my hometown. #lol

Monument to the Christian evangelist who brought the Christian
Religion to the Batak People.
There's a large carpark.
Entry is a nominal 5,000 Rph each.
It's an easy 10 - 15 minutes walk to the Cross. It's uphill but the pathway is great.
At the summit there is a large cross that lit up at night and is visible from the town below.
There is a lot of seating and several small chalets that people can pray inside.
Between the carpark and the entrance there are several eating places and some entertainment for kids.
The only Downside from my point of view is that the place is a bit dirty.
We came here just after New year and the place was quite busy.

Nice place, especially for christian and bataknese. This place having some monument related to Nomensen doing ministry in Batak tribe.

Air Terjun Lembah Harau is a beautiful waterfall that is located in the lush green valley of Lembah Harau. The waterfall has seven levels, each with different heights ranging from 10 to 15 meters. The water is clear and refreshing, and the surrounding scenery is breathtaking.
The waterfall is a great place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty. You can swim in the pool at the bottom of the waterfall, or sit on the rocks and feel the spray of the water. You can also take photos of the waterfall and the valley from different angles.
However, there are some drawbacks that you should be aware of. The waterfall can be crowded during weekends and holidays, so you might not have much privacy or space. The facilities are also limited, such as toilets, trash bins, and food stalls. You have to bring your own snacks and drinks, and make sure to keep the place clean.
Overall, Air Terjun Lembah Harau is a nice destination for nature lovers and adventurers. It is not too far from Bukittinggi or Payakumbuh, so you can easily visit it as a day trip. It is worth seeing the waterfall and experiencing the charm of Lembah Harau.

Place was decent, many pine trees. Good for family outing, spacious place, flying fox, they also offer paragliding experience but the paragliding didnt operating when i was there maybe also due to the fog as well. There was also a restaurant there.
Other than that nothing much, they have several selfie spot that you need to pay to take selfie at. Since Im not a fan of selfie tourism, it doesnt excite me at all..
Entrance fee was IDR20.000 if im not mistaken.

My experience: must through a long snake/s/crooked road on the way to this place by car. Feeling dizzy on the way🤢. Entry 20000 rupiah per person on weekday n 25000 rupiah per person on weekend. Parking free. Walk a bit to go to the spot. Breathtaking scenery, view of the lake, mountain, cold and calm wind (can hear the wind tho).
Paragliding (not sure about the details), flyingfox (25000rupiah up to down, 50000 rupiah from up to down and down to top n 75000 rupiah for full plus with short track of 5 different type of hanging rope), a place to snap a picture with prop (15000 rupiah per prop) also a small place called ethnic village to snap a picture (free)
Conclusion: amazing scenery to take a picture, plus a bit of activity to do while on top. BTW the place is still in renovation

Peaceful and quiet place to read a book, except when all the mosques start their calls to prayer. Extremely loud. So choose your accommodation carefully. Tanjung Raya, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia
Fort De Kock, also known as Benteng de Kock, is a 19th-century Dutch fortress located on a hill in Bukittinggi. It was constructed during the Padri War and named after Hendrik Merkus de Kock, the Dutch commander at that time. The fort offers stunning views of its surroundings and has historical significance due to its role in the conflict between the Minangkabau people and colonial forces.
I went to Fort de Kock as part of my trip to Bukittinggi, and I was fascinated by its historical significance and scenic location. Fort de Kock is a 19th-century Dutch fort that was built on a hill during the Padri War, a conflict between the local Minangkabau people and the colonial forces. The fort was named after Hendrik Merkus de Kock, the commander of the Dutch troops and the vice governor of the Dutch Indies at that time.
The fort is not very big, but it has some interesting features, such as the old cannons, the stone monument, and the radio antenna tower. The tower offers a stunning view of the city and the surrounding mountains. You can also see the Limpapeh bridge, a colorful suspension bridge that connects the fort with the cultural and wildlife park across the street. The park has a zoo, a museum, and a traditional house that showcase the culture and nature of Sumatra.
The fort is a great place to learn about the history and heritage of Bukittinggi and Sumatra. It is also a nice spot to relax and enjoy the fresh air and the green scenery. The entrance fee is very cheap, and there are some souvenir shops and food stalls nearby. I recommend Fort de Kock to anyone who visits Bukittinggi. It is a beautiful and historic attraction that you should not miss.

Nice gardens and sights, entry includes crossing the bridge and the zoo and aviary. Disappointed that ticket staff would not give my Indonesian son the local entry price (despite being shown Indonesian passport) instead of foreigner price (40,000rp), presumably because he was with myself, even though he resides in Sumatra. Have your KTP ready, or family card if you're a mixed race family.

Nice place to visit and enjoy an outdoor photo shoot facing the Sianok Valley ( down in the canyon) and the Great Wall Koto Gadang (adjacent hill across the Sianok valley).

Great place to hang out and take photos, or just rest and seeing the scenery after walking around Bukittinggi. Lubang Japang also located in this park.
Complete facilities, such as toilets, nursing rooms, mushola, sitting area, food stalls, and souvenir market.
Be careful with your luggage and food, because sometimes there are groups of monkeys in this area.

Very interesting authentic spot in Bukit Tinggi. The tour guide explained well all the story and bring our imagination to the day when Indonesian people were forced to build this long tunnel. A must visit place when we are visiting Bukit Tinggi. Hopefully the government will continue their program to build some facility inside

A nice place with a beautiful scenery of canyon down below. Don't miss Lobang Jepang (the Japanese tunnel), a big bunker with so many tunnels inside, which has one of the darkest history during Japanese occupation in Indonesia

Jl. Panorama No.31, Kayu Kubu, Guguk Panjang, Bukittinggi City, West Sumatra 26136, Indonesia
I'll never travel to Padang without this trip planner again
Sianok Valley Panoramic, located in West Sumatra near Bukittinggi, offers breathtaking vistas of volcanoes and a lush forested valley. The site also provides access to a network of World War II bunkers for visitors to explore. To reach the canyon's summit, one can hire a guide to navigate through the jungle and hike up the hill. Alternatively, tourists can take in the stunning scenery from nearby parks that showcase panoramic views of rice fields and surrounding landscapes.
I had a wonderful time at Panorama Ngarai Sianok, a park that offers a breathtaking view of the Sianok Canyon, a natural wonder that resembles the Green Canyon in America. The park is located in Bukittinggi, a city in West Sumatra that is rich in culture and history. From the park, I could see the majestic cliffs, the lush greenery, and the winding river that make up the canyon. The scenery was so beautiful and serene that I felt like I was in a painting.
The park also has some attractions that are worth visiting, such as the Lobang Jepang, a network of tunnels and bunkers that were built by the Japanese during World War II. The tunnels are dark and narrow, but they provide a glimpse into the past and the hardships that the people faced during the war. There is also a museum that displays some artifacts and information about the history of Bukittinggi and Sumatra.
The park is well-maintained and has some facilities for visitors, such as toilets, cafes, souvenir shops, and playgrounds. The entrance fee is very cheap, only 15,000 rupiah per person. The park is open from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm every day except Friday. The park is easily accessible by car or motorcycle from the city center.
I recommend Panorama Ngarai Sianok to anyone who wants to enjoy the beauty and heritage of Bukittinggi and Sumatra. It is a stunning and historic attraction that you should not miss.

This place is awesome! Eventhough you have to pay 15k to get in and pay additional fee 5k if you want to take a picture in their special spot, i think it's pretty worth it. The views are spectacular and the air is fresh. This place also featured in our 2k Rupiah, so you may want to take a picture by comparing Sianok Valley in the money vs the real one.
You can also enter Japan Cave from here, but i don't know if you have to pay again or not.
If you only want to pay for the entrance, be creative! There are lot of free spots in here, free from additional charges and offer fantastic view of Sianok Valley.
I absolutely would recommend this place to anyone who wants to see the real beauty of Bukittinggi.

Beautiful park where you can take photo. There was an entrance fee but since I came with a tour package it was paid for. There is a place they call 'lobang jepang', a not so nice history when japanese was in indonesia.

Ngarai Sianok view is beautiful. I think it will be more beautiful to take a picture by Drone
Ria Andriani — Google review
An amazingly beautiful view that can be seen from Sianok's Panorama Park. Enter a paid area, usually a package visit to the Japanese Hole (Lobang Jepang). Coming with a group, a tour guide is available who will provide a complete explanation. Guide fee exclude the ticket, paid @Rp. 15,000 / person. Very worth the price.
If you want to see a more beautiful panorama, there is a tower of view, not too high but the canyon looks wider, longer and extraordinarily beautiful.
So, it is not wrong that this beautiful view adorns the image on the Indonesia Rupiah IDR. 1,000,- old printing and IDR. 2,000,- released in 2016.
Panorama Park is beautifully arranged, gazebos with typical Minang roofs including carvings adorn the garden area.

Nice place, near and clean. There's lot of monkeys but they didn't disturb the visitors. We also saw an amazing view from Menara Pandang. As for Lubang Japang, it need a guide to enter, approximately 75-85k rupiah per small group.

The mountain has a very unique track, we climb after it descends and then climbs and then the descent is greeted with what looks like a small waterfall/small river.
This mountain is not as crowded as other mountains because it is still considered very beautiful. If you like adventure, try Mount Tandikek,

But if you are looking for comfort and tranquility, this mountain is the winner. During the quiet climb it is not as busy as other mountains. The track goes up and down, during the climb we will come across small rivers. Very cool and fresh. Water sources are also easy to find.

Stately 17th-century palace of the former Pagaruyung Kingdom amid lush hills & landscape.
The replica of Istano Basa Pagaruyung (Grand Palace of Pagaruyung), which we visited and witnessed, shows how magnificent the Minangkabau cultural heritage and history are. This palace was first built in 1804, but was burned several times, namely in 1804 during the Padri War, in 1966 and in 2007 due to lightning strikes.
Visitors who come here, apart from being able to see Minangkabau culture which enriches Indonesian cultural values, can also take pictures wearing traditional Minang clothing for rent. There is now a more spacious parking lot on the southeast side of the palace.

The place you must visit in West Sumatera. Legendary Traditional Minang Palace. Great architecture with three levels of building, nice scenery, spacious parking area. nice facility, unfortunately the stalls are mostly empty.
You can rent the traditional Suntiang Dress for photos.

Place is well maintained. Three-storey palace for you to explore, and there's some more at around the ground area. Pls be mindful with the steep stairs. There's plenty sellers with cute keychain/fridge magnet/bags waiting outside.

They said is the biggest Rumah Gadang and yes...it's huge!!. Too bad they dont really put information in each of buildings. We have to scan the barcode but not sure why it doesn't work! But overall, it's an interesting experience. We can also rent the traditional costume for photoshoot of course. Just expect crowds of people here.

A cultural spot that's not to be missed when you visit West Sumatera ... this huge three level building with horn-shaped roof is a replica built based on the old Palace of Pagarruyung Kingdom.
The current building holds several royal regalia from the old Kingdom.
For kids, there are several activities in the foreground: tandem bikes, merry-go-round, electric cars, ans coloring.

Went there on Sunday morning. The parking lot is big but super hot cause there are no trees. It was so quiet, I love the palace. It was so huge. Immediately we were approached by cartoon characters and offered to take pictures with them. Please prepare tips for them! Before you enter the palace, an officer will ask you to remove your shoes/sandals, put them together in a plastic bag, get a numbered ticket for the bag from him and you can get them again after you are done sightseeing the palace. Inside the palace there was not much to see, at least on the ground floor. But you could go to the second floor and maybe to the third. I give it 4 stars because I wish they could show more furniture or something, so we can have a better understanding of the house and can imagine what it's like living inside the house a long time ago. After we saw the kitchen area, we were offered to buy some souvenirs like fridge magnets, some bracelets, postcards, etc. On the side of the palace there is another building similar only smaller, and i don't know what it is for, because it has no door and there was no written information on it. All I could see was an open window at the top where birds could fly in and out. The visit was not exactly what I expected, but still fun :)

This majestic icon of the Minang people is located about 1 1/2 drive from Bukittinggi crossing the Tanah Datar region. Visited by everyone, it is always packed with people especially on weekends. There are traditional costumes for rent. The palace itself may look huge but took less than half-an-hour to be fully explored, unless you like the details in everything.

I had the pleasure of visiting Istano Pagaruyung in West Sumatra a couple of years ago and was truly amazed. Located just about an hour's drive from Bukittinggi, it's easily accessible and worth the trip. Back then, there were still some art displays that added depth to the experience. However, after the fire in 2007, many of these displays are no longer available. Despite that, the architectural grandeur of the palace and its rich history provide a unique glimpse into the Minangkabau culture. The surrounding landscape remains serene, amplifying the overall ambiance. Entry is reasonably priced, with tickets for adults around 15k rupiah or roughly 1 USD. Even without the art, Istano Pagaruyung remains a beautiful destination that's worth every penny and moment. The guides were knowledgeable and shed light on fascinating insights. Highly recommended for those wanting to delve into Indonesia's cultural heritage.

25k to enter for tourists. Toilets and parking on site. Parking is an additional fee. The palace is beautiful and the architecture is incredible. Limited information (virtually none) on the palace itself so you are walking around without knowing the significance if you don’t do some research before arrival. Tourist information centre on site is outdated with no information.

Beautiful & huge traditional castle from the Kingdom of Pagaruyung. This one is actually the third replica, after the first and the second caught in fire.
Such a masterpiece in architectural design, have look closer to the pillars inside where they have few degrees non-straight structure.
The carving is mesmerizing as well. I suggest you to come on the weekdays and after 3pm to have more time walking around, admiring every single details of the castle.
