How long is the drive from Pueblo to Taos?
The direct drive from Pueblo to Taos is 175 mi (281 km), and should have a drive time of 3 hrs 42 mins in normal traffic.
If you’re going on a road trip from Pueblo to Taos, we did the research for you and compiled some great stops along the way — with top places to visit like Mission: Wolf and Music Meadows Ranch, or the ever-popular Bishop Castle.
The top stops along the way from Pueblo to Taos (with short detours) are Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, Taos Pueblo, and Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center. Other popular stops include Enchanted Circle Pottery, Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, and Bishop Castle.
Bishop Castle is a unique and eccentric building made entirely by one local resident named Jim Bishop. There were no blueprints or plans used in its construction, with Jim working on it single-handedly over his lifetime. The castle boasts an array of features including bridges, turrets, and even a fire-breathing dragon created by Jim himself. Admission to the castle is free for all visitors who can explore the self-guided tours and gift shop.
By far one of my favorite places to visit. It's amazing and beautiful. Hand crafted by an older gentleman Jim. A must see attraction.
You must experience the climb to the top of both main towers...it's scary and uplifting, just breathtaking:)watch where you step. There are no guidelines except be careful!

Very cool structure is definitely a must see. Got my adrenaline pumping going up so high. That being said definitely hope some of the donations goes toward up keep its definitely explore at your own risk. Had me nervous at times.

This place is nuts! Very scary to think about climbing all the way to the top, and definitely looks like someone’s home project. But it’s kitschy and fun. The history is fascinating, even if the manifestos all over the place are weird.
Tina Edwards — Google review
This is the one of the most unique spots within the US. The building is quirky to say the least, and hands down the most adrenaline-pumping place I've ever been to. You've got parts seemingly held up by wires and sections that look like they'd barely hold up a cat, let alone a person. But against all odds, they do—and do it impressively.
Navigating the stairs, towers, and metal bridges truly sends shivers down your spine. And here's the kicker: this entire place was the vision of just one incredibly inspired individual. No formal building experience, no permits—just pure passion and a big dream.
They don't charge an entrance fee, which also means they're not guaranteeing your safety. It adds an edge to the experience, making every step a thrilling venture. If you're in for an adventure, I highly recommend giving this place a go. Safe travels!

This place was a work of beauty. The intricacies of this place were mesmerizing. There were so many staircases that went to a different part of the castle. There were some areas that couple potentially be hazardous to people- holes in the flooring and holes in the staircases. But it was so beautiful! I was fascinated and wanted to explore the high up area outside but my husband was worried it wasn’t safe enough. There was one area that had a lot of animal feces. The gift shop was cute. There’s no public bathroom but there was a portable bathroom. There was also a stand with hot chocolate. It is free to visit and there’s a place the leave donations for them to continue improving the site. It is definitely worth a visit.

I can definitely understand the hype with this place. It's legit scary cool, but petrifying. The idea that some guy just built this castle with his bare hands is insane. Definitely stop by, but remember to tread lightly and watch your step! The views from the top are amazing, especially when you're terrified from the trip to get there.

This place is just WOW!! This place is a piece of art. It amazing to know it handmade. Just an awesome place to see although it's not for the faint of heart. I only got up to the second story with the kids. Hubs and one of my boys went to the top of one of the towers. Overall was such a cool place to visit.

Fun place to explore at your own risk! I loved the eclectic feel the whole place had, You can see the love that went into making the castle over so many years and it's still under construction. Allow maybe 1 full hour to 1 1/2 to explore it all.

A great place to check out. A bit of a drive from Denver but worth it. Beautiful scenery leading to the castle. This place will test your height nerves. We loved it.

Seriously what a cool slice of Colorado History! Bishop Castle is a must see day trip! Beautiful drive only a few hours from Denver. The history and story behind the structure is classic American Dream.
If your visiting or a native make sure to put this on your list! Feed the chickens too, you won’t be disappointed, and drop a few bucks in the donation can.
Highly recommend

Very interesting and odd place. The drive up to it is beautiful and many pictures taken. The building is not for the weak or disabled but cool place. No bathroom facilities, small gift shop, make sure to watch the video on floor one of how it was built.

I enjoyed visiting this place very much. There's a lot of stairs, which was a bit difficult for me. The story about the castle is very interesting. The engineering behind some of the designs was amazing.

Totally bizarre place that is worth the visit. Definitely watch the intro video. Be careful walking around, especially in winter- wear spikes or hiking boots. It's super slick. Some gaps and drop offs that are scary if you have a Fear of heights. Slippery. But such a cool story and fun playground like castle with a dragon and gift shop at decent prices and some souvenirs and hot beverages on a trust-business (trust that you pay). Glad I went once in winter but I think I'd prefer summer.

Bishop Castle is a Colorado Roadside attraction that is free (donation box on site). When you arrive, the entrance is right off the highway. Park alongside the highway and walk to the entrance, keeping an eye on cars. I visited 2/19/22 and the area around the castle was muddy and icy in some places, wear good shoes to get around. The highway in from Colorado Springs had dry roads the entire way, but it is at 9000 ft elevation and definitely in the mountains. If your vehicle can't manage snow and ice be aware before heading up. When touring the castle I wore a backback and I wouldn't recommend it. The staircases are very narrow and wind up and down in spirals. The day I went had very little tourists and I could take my time resting (remember, 9000 ft elevation) climbing up and down the castle. This was a peculiar, wonderful, interesting, fun thing to see for free. It took me about 90 minutes to view everything. The wind was gusting and some of the metal walkways and stairs were swaying in the wind, which felt exciting and maybe a little dangerous. A couple was taking wedding photos inside, but they were only there a little while and it was still easy to see everything. Check it out.

I feel this is a place that everyone should visit. What an experience. The drive out there is so beautiful. When you get there there is parking along the road. You can see the castle from the road but you will want to go in and explore. Just a heads up, it could be muddy. This is just one of those just go see it. There is a food bar which was closed when we were there, but the gift shop was open.

Definitely a workout to climb all the stairs. The views from the towers were incredible. It was amazing to see the use of natural rock and metal scraps and pieces. The stained glass is beautiful. The concessions were reasonable priced.
Sheri Beeson — Google review
This was such a fun and interesting experience. Well Worth the detour on the way home from a camping trip. This castle has so many places to explore. The story of this castle is also interesting. It is hand-built by the Bishop, and despite many legal battles and complaints the castle still continues to be built. We were both afraid of heights so we did not go all the way to the top. There is some adrenaline for those adrenaline seekers. The views around the castle are great. The castle is such an impressive feat. Be prepared that the steps and stairs are steep and sometimes uneven, so if you have balance issues you might not do well here. When we got up the stairs we immediately were transported to a fantasy world. This would be a great place for live-action role-play games or to host a DnD session. Another great benefit of this place is that it is free to explore. You can make donations and explore buying things at the gift shop.

My husband and I visited Bishop Castle, in Rye Colorado, during our recent trip to see family in Colorado Springs. The drive to Bishop Castle, located in the middle of a National Forest, was lengthy, but beautiful! Well worth it when we arrived! The castle is an amazing structure that is hardly justified with words, or even photos. You truly have to see it for yourself to really appreciate it. Since I'd have to write a novel about it, to explain the history of the place, I'll suggest you look up information about it and the remarkable place that it is. Truly a work of love, labor, and no doubt more sweat and tears than I can imagine.

We came to this place on my birthday looking for adventure. It is a bit of a drive, but it's definitely worth it. This castle was built by one really talented guy. If you have kids, keep them close. You can fall off and die. If you love adrenaline, then you should definitely check this place out.
Torin — Google review
Interesting place that's worth visiting. Use caution when exploring, especially with children. It's an active construction site. There are many gaps in the flooring and stairways, low overhead clearance, and pieces of metal sticking out. There are visually no safety features to prevent you from falling from many of the high points and towers if you venture upward. They're are porta-potties at the entrance. It's free to visit and always open, despite the hours Google lists.

January 21, 2024 was my third time to visit this masterpiece in work. I am amazed every time I visit. Just the sheer height and size of this structure is amazing. It is a work in progress (construction site) so there are some obstacles and potential dangers. Just be aware and careful of your surroundings. I like to explore but the height of some of the areas elevated my adrenaline and heart rate. No entrance fees and self guided. I will continue to stop and visit Bishops Castle anytime I'm in the area and I would recommend to anybody else to please stop by and visit and also leave a donation

What a amazing hidden gem in Colorado, this castle is worth the drive. This castle was built by a man named Jim. This is a self guided tour through his castle. Please beware if you have children, you can absolutely die here if you're not careful; for the risk takers.....get ready to feel your heart beat!!!!!!
It is recommended to donate few bucks. You can buy farm fresh eggs here for 6 dollars and there's a gift shop!!!!!!

What a crazy cool place!! We went at a bad time weather wise. It was just mud. But so worth it! If you want to visit, I would suggest June when it’s dry and all the snow is gone. It is very strange and a marvel to experience.
Amazing place to learn about wolves, potentially meet them and enjoy some breath taking scenery ... wholeheartedly recommend spending the time to go out to Mission Wolf if it definitely worth the time.
The staff is friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable ... you are guaranteed to learn something you never knew before ...
One nugget i learned is that wolves breath is better than most humans ... totally without smell, i was amazed 😜

I had a 3 hours drive in each direction and it was totally worth it! The crew in m:w are so knowledgeable and dedicated, and the wolves are amazing. My group was able to visit 3 enclosures, meet 5 wolves and wolf dogs and learn so much from Mike and Moira. We also toured the area, saw the green house and visited the gift shop. It is recommended that you consider donation, wolf sponsorship or just helping out around the property. They accept volunteers on a short and longer basis. My favorite part was meeting the wolves up and personal, and learning that “if you don’t like a wolf to lick your teeth- don’t go into the wolves enclosure”. The 13 mile dirt road leading to m:w is not too bad, but I wish I had a 4x4 instead of my little car (it might be worse in the winter). To summarize: an amazing experience!

A great mission with compassionate, salt-of-the-earth type people. Kent was extremely knowledgeable and impassioned about working with the wolves, and a truly gentle soul. A powerful experience in a beautiful Colorado setting, and an effort worth supporting. This is a memorable adventure absolutely worth embarking upon.

It's an indescribable place. Come for an afternoon visit or show up and volunteer. There's always work for the willing! My girls pulled weeds and chopped wood. We're talking massive weeds on the mountain side with thorns that get into the wolves paws, not landscape weeding. It's a hardworking community of .... well ... anyone... from everywhere ... you're welcome as long as you respect the wolves. Work hard and you might learn something and have a wolf encounter along the way.

Staff is very warm and informative. They spent lots of time teaching and answering questions. The mission to give each wolf quality care and to teach others about the importance of wolves is the most important thing to them. Their love and passion drives them to do everything possible to ensure the welfare of each wolf. This is an amazing place and it deserves donations and volunteers to carry on the mission they dedicate their lives to.

My family and I had the most amazing experience today! I've traveled all over the place and I'd say this is one of the best experiences to date. The tour was fantastic, the staff are so knowledgeable, friendly, and we learned so much about wolves. It was very educational and we had no idea the wolves behaviors until now. The best part was our encounter with 5 of the wolves, and lots of kisses from Eden! Such a fun, fascinating and fantastic experience! We highly recommend Mission:Wolf! Thank you MW!

This is an incredible experience. We did the meet and greet where we met, pet and were kissed by live wolves. Then we took a second tour to look at all of the other members of the pack. Not exclusively wolves, there were fox and New Guinea singing dogs.

Apparently there's another place called wolf mission that is using the same name as the sanctuary taking care of wolves they are are selling clothing and coats etc bracelets and necklaces. They are scams. The products are not the same as the pictures very poorly made. Please look into where you are when it cones to these sites. I was contacted by the actual wolf mission which I believed is this site. I recognize doing your research. And maybe not buy online e as most places give u very cheap material. If it's cheap in cost u get what u paid for but I paid 40 each sweater and got what amounted to a 5 dollar shirt.

Howdy, we are two sisters. We went to Music Meadows ranch with our family in the summer and we loved it! My horse’s name was Rusty and my sister's horse’s name was Babe. It was fun to trot on our horses. The guides were as nice as the horses! The ranch was beautiful. We think y’all should go to the Music Meadows ranch, it was the best trip I ever went on!.

We did their horseback riding (crystal falls trip) in August and came back in October because it was such a great experience.
The trail guide teaches you about horse safety, and then you get to know your horse through brushing them and doing some of the saddling process yourself (under direction of course), which really helps you connect with your horse.
The riding was excellent, the area there is extremely beautiful, and the guides customize the ride based on the needs of the group.
We will be coming back here many, many times in the future

An experience of a LIFETIME. My daughter is an equestrian and for her 16th Birthday, she wanted to go to Music Meadows Ranch. We are from NY and this was a decision she made based solely on their website. So we took a leap of faith and booked our 1st trip to Colorado because of her birthday wish to go to Music Meadow Ranch.
My daughter wanted to do the Horse experience and picked the 4 hour Picnic ride. I was a bit nervous because even though I have some riding experience, I wasn’t sure if I could physically handle a 4 hour ride, especially in the winter and because my old joints. Also, I wasn’t confident that I was good enough for the task. My daughter too had lost her confidence with her riding skills. However, this Ranch was like no other Ranch we had ever been to. The experience we had, from start to finish, was the best of the best.
For starters, this is not your nose to tail trail ride. This is an individualized riding experience. You get exactly what you want and are capable of doing.
On our first day there, Madeline gave us the BEST and most easy to understand 101 horseback riding review I have ever received in my life. It was like a clinic for beginners. For example, while we were still on the ground, she set up a mock horse and put reins in our hands and gave us a practice session. I thought to myself, if all people were given this information in the way she delivered it, then we would all be equestrians. Madeline is certainly gifted at teaching, explaining and demonstrating the information in a very practical way.
That day we went out and quickly our confidence grew. I was blessed to ride with Rusty and my daughter was blessed to ride Cash. These horses were everything you could ever want in a horse, beautiful, healthy looking and well mannered. They were ‘push button’ meaning they were very responsive.
Quickly my anxiety and concerns turned into pure pleasure and both my daughter and I were able to ride and just enjoy the incredible landscape, the fresh air and utter peace.
The next day we went out with Casey and she was already given the information about our concerns and skill level. She too made our experience unforgettable and again we had another excellent day. On our last day, we had the pleasure to meet Elin. Once we got to open grass land, Elin said “Go! I will let you set the pace.” and my heart again overflowed with excitement and joy.
All three days got to lope to our hearts content. Never in my life had I experienced such freedom, joy and peace. I will bring these memories to my death bed and relive my 3 days at Music Meadows Ranch.
With much gratitude, I say thank you to everyone at Music Meadows Ranch.

We have returned to Music Meadows several times and love everything about it. It is truly a wonderful home-away-from-home where we can step away from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind and really connect as a family. We did the all inclusive option on our recent stay and it was incredible. We learned so much about horsemanship, and our horses really took care of us out on the trail. Madeline and Casey were excellent guides and made us feel like family. Sherry prepared delicious meals to keep us fueled for all the adventures. The trail rides were absolutely breathtaking, and the rancher's ride was so much fun! Music Meadows is hands down our favorite place to go as a family and we will be back!

A wonderful experience! My sister and I rode with our guide Paige. We were given basic training and any assistance needed to feel comfortable with the horses. We spent a couple hours trail riding around the beautiful meadow with views of the mountains and the valley. My sister, visiting from a big city, was thrilled to be cantering and trotting. It was a wonderful experience. I will definitely go again. At Music Meadows they took excellent care of both the horses and the riders.
This is a hidden gem! It is a must see place for anyone interested in contemporary American counterculture art. You could spend days exploring the permanent exhibition on the 2nd floor. And the curators are great storytellers. They personally knew and/or are friends with each artist represented here. If you wanna know what was happening in the American counterculture art in 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond, you should see this place.

This is a delightful local museum with a lot of eclectic art. They also run a children's art program, where the kids get to paint planter boxes to put out in front of the museum. There's also a nice colorful mural across the road in the park. The tour was very informative and surprisingly they even have an entire room devoted to native Hawaiian art! We enjoyed visiting very much.
As far as the guy complaining about the elevator...well, it's a very small elevator with a CLEARLY posted sign stating that the maximum allowed is 8 people or 1400 pounds. With how big Americans are...well, just saying if you overloaded the elevator and got stuck, that's your fault. Chances are by doing that you cost the museum quite a lot of money in repairs.

The Museum of Friends is an extraordinary gem that beautifully celebrates the power of art. From the moment we stepped through its doors, we were captivated by the vibrant energy and the inspiring collection that awaited us.
The first thing that struck us was the incredibly warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff at the Museum of Friends are friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about the exhibits. Their enthusiasm is contagious and enhances the entire experience. Their dedication to preserving and sharing the stories behind each artwork truly shines through.
The museum showcases an impressive range of pieces from local artists and beyond, spanning various mediums and styles. No mater what your personal taste in art is, there's something for everyone to admire and appreciate. Each piece tells a unique story and offers a glimpse into the artist's creative journey.
In conclusion, the Museum of Friends in Walsenburg, Colorado, is a well worth the stop. With its impressive collection, welcoming atmosphere, and commitment to fostering connections, it is an absolute must-visit for anyone seeking an inspiring and uplifting cultural experience.

I found Maria and Brendt warm engaging and inspiring.
The MOF is a Radiant Cactus Flower in the Desert.
Their selfless dedication to integrating world renowned art and providing transitional opportunities for community service to local residents adds a whole new dimension to how art affects a community.
Everyone passing through Walsenburg should stop and visit MOF and be prepared to take the time to immerse your mind and soul to absorb the incredible art. The expansive and open exhibit lends itself to just stand and concentrate on the artist's vision and also drink in the the amount of patience and love manifested in each piece.
Brendt and Maria are a treasure trove of knowledge and are selfless in their dedication to bringing art to the desert and supporting the Walsenburg community. Your visit and donation to MOF will ensure Maria's and Brendt's legacy lives on.

What a breath of fresh air for Walsenburg!
What a terrific place to swing by for an hour or two and look at a very wide range of types of work in their permanent collection and any exhibits they have going on. Currently the exhibits are John Wark's Colorado Wildfires, Camille Seaman's Photographs of Our Polar Regions, Larry Racioppo's Hurricane Sandy exhibit and many more upstairs. What I found most interesting was seeing more history of the area besides more typical things Walsenburg is known for such as mining, the Coalfield, Battle of Walsenburg, etc.
Everyone who works here is fantastic! You see and hear the passion they have for the works on display. Hopefully, Maria is there, and you have extra time to learn about Miners Plaza Park directly across the street from them and whatever else she feels like sharing! In the alley behind their building and the alley behind the other buildings while walking north to Heritage Park are also loaded with art murals that are beautiful.
I'll definitely be returning for another visit.

This place is AMAZING. The first floor features traveling exhibits which are switched out every few months. The upper floor features a permanent collection and it is mind-blowingly amazing.
It felt like I was swimming in art.
Artists that I have heard of before, and many artists that I have never heard of before. A little local art, and a lot of New York art. You get a little taste of the Colorado communes from the '60s. Loads of fabulous printwork. Sculpture, pencil drawings, ink drawings, mixed media, collage, oils on canvas and other substrates, acrylics, photography, watercolor, even broken glass.
There's also one whole room devoted to Hawaii and Pacific island art and craft, and stepping foot into this room felt like I was catapulted into another world.
I can't believe that this quality, variety, and sheer volume of art is right here in downtown Walsenburg! Absolutely worth your while. You can book a tour through their website. Please be sure to make a monetary donation.

It's been exciting watching the influx of diverse cultures and creative spirit that has been building in Southern Colorado over the years, and I was super excited to finally stop by the Museum of Friends in Walsenburg after recently learning about it.
The museum is diverse, having three thoughtful exhibitions on display in the primary gallery floor, and the entire upper floor is filled with a stunning, massive collection of artwork from the myriad of friends for which the museum is named. Though we didn't explore too thoroughly, there is a lovely gift shop with a diverse, affordable collection of artworks and gifts near the entryway of the museum, as well as section selling art supplies that are otherwise impossible to find in the area.
We were so fortunate to have an opportunity to meet and chat with the owners and gallery director, who are deeply passionate about art and sharing their love with the world.
This is a very special place filled with the imaginative magic we need as human beings :) Nourish and treat yourself and your loved ones to the Museum of Friends!

We stumbled into this quaint little town and were bowled over to find a Contemporary Art Museum! The museum was between exhibits but we were able to get a sneak peak at the upcoming show. We were also able to take our time viewing the permanent collection on the second floor. The permanent collection is a truly amazing assemblage of contemporary art. Wow! This place is definitely worth a stop. A highlight of our drive home.
Park offering swimming, boating, kayaking & fishing, plus camping & hiking amid mountain views.
Great place to fish, golf and other outdoor activities. Clean campsites. It’s a little loud at the campsite by the road. I would be careful to check the weather as high wind conditions can make this a brutal spot to camp.

Worth the trip! Beautiful lake with a swimming area divided off with bouys, a nice sandy beach and covered picnic tables. $9 Colorado State Park fee. Perfect family activity on a hot day. This is an absolutely awesome place to visit! It is beautiful, well cared for, and well maintained. We went camping for a few days and was thoroughly impressed with the area as a whole. Playgrounds for the kids, restrooms that are maintained daily, sites that are maintained and visited by staff daily.... And I have never been somewhere that the rangers were more on top of their game! I swear they work as a close team and nothing happens in the area without them noticing! Will definitely visit again.

Beautiful park. 2 lakes. Good fishing in Horseshoe Lake, which is wake free. Paved biking path all the way around Martin Lake. A Beautiful place to visit. Showers, restrooms, water spigot nearby and fishing. Caught a few on worms. Only stayed for a couple of days but it was so worth it. We were even lucky enough to have a nice neighbor who offered to pickup whatever we needed from town because she was heading there and wanted to be a good neighbor. Loved the people, the peacefulness, and the lake and mountain views.
Absolutely a must stop but grab your spot fast as the slots get taken quickly.

We went camping here a few weeks ago. Very friendly and helpful park rangers. It was nice to have a fire! The rustic campsite we had was nice and flat and had options for where to place the tent. The fire pit had a grate over it for cooking and the picnic table had a metal covering over it, which provided some needed shade.
The park is also only an hour or so drive from the Great Sand Dunes.
One thing that wasn’t so good was the close proximity to the road with a hill. The cars and trucks at night make a lot of noise and can make tent sleeping a little difficult.
We had a nice stay and recommend it.

I just enjoyed my second trip to Lathrop state park. It is a very beautiful park, the rangers in my opinion are amazingly nice helpful and at the time pleasant. I would recommend for any anglers, walkers, bicyclists, hikers, lover's of nature and ext.
I cooked at several different picnic area's over the time I was there. They all accommodate a different level of needs most with some kind of restroom.
The town of Walsenburg is not far away I personally like it I think it's cute. It has most of the things one normally forgets lol. During the summer months the town has an adorable water park great for the kids.

Very beautiful and peaceful. The people in the visitor’s center are super friendly and very welcoming and helpful. It’s our first stay in the Colorado state park campground and we’re very impressed with not only the beautiful views but also the very well maintained nature and amenities. Both trails are great 👍 We had site 102 and the view is incredible. We have a 40’ fifth wheel. The campground is very spacious and big rig friendly. Not far after the entrance there are 2 water filling stations to fill tank, very easy access.

The bigger lake has an island you can try to go escape to ❤️

Lathrop State Park is Colorado’s first state park, founded in 1962. This park is packed with things to do for the whole family and is really a great campground. There’s a golf course, two lakes for fishing and swimming, beautiful trails, clean facilities and sites, and fantastic views of the Rocky Mountains. The sites are a little close to each other for my taste, but I have seen much worse. I highly recommend camping here. They have reasonable rates and accept reservations (I definitely recommend making reservations!) I stayed at site 028 on Piñon Loop. The site is near the restrooms and close to Hogback Trail. Recommended!
Facility offering exhibits & a short film about the park, plus a bookstore, snacks & souvenirs.
This place just doesn’t make sense. It’s incredibly beautiful and a wonderful place to camp! It has great meadows, mountains and of course huge sand dunes. This park is absolutely worth the adventure. The pictures DO NOT DO THIS PLACE JUSTICE. Definitely going back.

Who knew there were sand dunes in the mountains of southern Colorado. I've vacationed all throughout Colorado when I was young with my parents and as adult with my wife and daughter. The sand dunes are NOT what you see at the beach. It's an amazing experience to see and interact with the sand. You can hike up to top. You can rent sleds and or boards to slide down the sand dunes. The park is open 24 hours. However the visitors center open for specific times and days. The Great Sand dunes admission is $25 per car load. I recommend during the summer go early in the morning before the sand heats up. At night you can see the stars and on a full moon the dunes come alive, but bring a flashlight.
The Park Rangers are helpful and friendly. Plan to visit when you're in Southern Colorado.

Decent educational exhibits, wonderful views, plenty of parking, great customer service, decent bathrooms, and as for the park itself. It’s a lot harder to get to the top than you think! At least it is for a pregnant lady used to living below sea level!! Hahaha it’s definitely something pictures will never do justice. Also sitting down in the wind is a BAD idea. Sand goes in every hole… although this park is dog friendly and you can bring your dogs. Please note that this area is very very windy and on bare human skin the sand feels like needles when you get higher. If you have your dogs it might be best to not bring them up high on the dunes. When you’re standing it seems fine but if you sit you feel what they may feel…. Also something really cool we seen was people sledding and sand boarding down the dunes! It looked like a lot of fun and I wish we would have brought something!

This is a hidden gem. It seems like nearly no one knows that there is a national park in the middle of the Colorado mountains that has miles and miles of sand dunes. Yes it feels like and looks like you are in the middle of the Sahara desert but you are in the mountains of Colorado! It is truly eerie that there are 700 foot sand dunes that you can climb and literally walk for miles in sand dunes in the middle of the Colorado mountains. But be prepared for a tough hike up towards the top, the 2 mile hike feels like four since you are walking in sand. Yes it is a bit off the beaten path but definitely worth the trip. Truly a must visit, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Beautiful national park with great views! It will be windy, so prepare accordingly. Also a hike on sand takes longer so if you’re going up the dunes give yourself ample time. However there is plenty of flatter terrain to hike as well.

Loved the experience. Trail behind Visitor's Center leads to a lower parking lot and the dunes, or you can drive down and park and go on to the dunes. Sand is hot, hydrate! Be careful with dogs, paws will burn on sand. Just beautiful landscape. So much wildlife in area.

When we went the visitor center was only the gift shop. All of the exhibits and theater were closed, due to Covid, so we weren’t able to have the full experience. You can buy your souvenirs here. NOTE: they do NOT sell or rent sleds or boards here. If you are planning to sled or board, you must buy or rent beforehand. I’d like to go back sometime to experience the rest the visitor center had to offer:

I have been wanting to see the dunes in Colorado for a long time. They were pretty cool to see. I wasn’t able to climb them this trip due to a recent knee repair surgery but hopefully one day. The people were climbing up then sledding down. It looked like a lot of fun. It’s well worth the stop yo see. Again, it was a little less than organized. There were signs but there was no one around to explain anything or ask questions unless you went to the visitor center.

Tourist trap. It's decent enough, crowded, and the ac isn't great with all the doors opening all the time. The exhibit is neat inside. Didn't go to shop, but some peeps in the crew bought stuff. Water refill station is great (wish there was more than one).

I'm so glad I read reviews. People are not kidding when they say get there early. On a week day. Not a holiday
We've traveled on a motorcycle from Richmond Virginia to the Grand Canyon and we are slowly heading back east. This National Park was on our to do list. It is Saturday, Memorial weekend. There was a 13 minute backup delay at the entrance going in at 10. Coming out at 12:30, the line of cars stopped, waiting to enter, is over a mile long. CRAZY!
The park rangers were not letting cars go down to the parking lot to the dunes, because it was full. We were allowed to go down on the bike. Otherwise, its parking on the side of the main road and walking a half mile or more.
Once we parked, we took off our shoes, rolled up our pants, walked across the rushing stream and went up the first hill. The water was cool, inviting.
Families are all around, kids digging in the sand, splashing in the water. It's the beach in a vast, land locked area.
Definitely worth the trip. I cant stress enough the importance of going early. On a weekday. Not on a holiday.

30-ft. waterfall reachable by a brief crevasse hike wading through water & over slippery rocks.
Easy drive up, even for a 2WD. Great views of the Crestones and Dunes!. Bathrooms are at the trailhead. Easy hike to the "cave" entrance. Microspikes are definitely recommended for going into the cave in the winter. Gorgeous ice formations on every wall! The frozen falls were amazing, with water flowing behind the clear ice.. Really cool to watch! Definitely worth the trip!!

Awesome pull off for a quick and fairly easy hike. The falls were frozen but definitely still worth viewing, you could hear and see the water under the frozen ice and snow, so amazing!! Invigorating hike after a long time of driving, we were there around sunset so it was an extra beautiful decent back to the car !

Beautiful frozen waterfall, with great views of the San Luis valley on the walk down
The con of visiting here is that it’s a very short easy walk, which unfortunately means encountering people and dogs on the trail who are unfamiliar with trail etiquette. Ffs, stop letting your dogs encroach on people’s personal space

A nice side trip on your way to Great Sand Dunes NP.
Entrance is free.
Zapata Falls is about a 1/2 mile walk from the parking lot. There is a bathroom available as well.
The hike to the falls was rocky and uphill. But there's a few benches along the way in case you need to rest.
I was disappointed in the size of the falls. Perhaps we went during the wrong season when water was low? Ive seen way more impressive waterfalls. Nonetheless, it was definitely still a fun experience and picturesque.
j h — Google review
Personally I love walking through freezing water. If you don’t that sucks because you have to to be able to see the entire of the falls. Fun spot to visit and spend some time in. Surrounded by some other hiking trails to explore.
Bryan Sacks — Google review
It's a steep drive up worth it! Start at the signs below and get some education of the place. Once at the top, if your a big truck, go to the right for overflow parking.
I recommend going before late afternoon as the sun moves off the mountain and it's darker at the waterfall. It's free to go up. It's half a mile up to waterfall. If you want to see it, expect to take shoes off and get wet. You cross the creek a couple times and then in the water to climb up rocks and see the waterfall. Our 6 year old made it to the creek and crossed couple times, but not into the freezing waters and up the rock. In case you got little ones too.
On way down, check out the views of the Great Sand Dunes NP!
Give this review a thumbs up if it helped you! #crazykleinadventure

Zapata falls is a really cool and unique waterfall near the Great Sand Dunes National Park. If you are going to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, this is just a bit off of the main road that leads to the park. Once you get off the main road, the dirt road that leads up to the waterfall is kind of bumpy and not made for every car. I went on it in a small old Toyota camry and there was a few spots where I was wishing I hadn't drove and just hiked up the road instead, but I made it lol. Every other vehicle on the road was an SUV, jeep or truck, and I'd suggest using one of these. The actual waterfall was unique in that it was kind of inside a canyon type of space and it was almost like it was coming through the roof of the mountain. It is really cool to check out.
B A — Google review
It’s about a half mile hike but don’t let it fool you thinking it’s an easy one.
You’ll have to walk uphill most of the time and navigate through slippery rocks. Also don’t forget to put on bug repellent otherwise the mosquitos will eat you alive.
It’s all worth it though. The views are amazing and compared to other waterfalls this one is relatively easier as well.

Short gander up the creek brings one to an incredible space within the crevice. It is possible with the right climbing skills to traverse the creek without getting wet but expect to get ankle deep in ice cold mountain run off
Gaia Street — Google review
If you are near the sand dunes, you must take this short hike to see the falls!!
Go through the creek, look at the first fall then traverse over the other rocks and around the corner to get the full effect of the falls!!
The trail is a little rocky but it is not hard. Your feet will get wet but that is all part of the fun!!

Colorado Gators Reptile Park
Zoo
Nature & Parks
Wildlife park on a fish farm with albino alligators, crocs & snakes, plus gator-wrestling lessons.
You would think the only good gator parks in the US would be in Florida, but not the case at all! Our family visited a great Gator park in Florida two years ago and had a blast, BUT, this park here in our home state of Colorado DEFINITELY measured up, and was actually MORE interactive than the one we visited in Florida.
We stopped by this park on our way home from our Spring Break vacation in Pagosa Springs.
My kids were fascinated and thrilled by the opportunity to hold a variety of snakes, feed tortoises, and take a picture with a baby alligator. Of course, there were PLENTY of adult size gators of all sizes and ages that we got to see and even feed as well. The bucket of food for the gators is only a couple of dollars, but you can get one for free by bringing in a coupon found in a brochure at nearby hotels.
The staff knows what they are talking about and went ABOVE and BEYOND to make sure our family had a truly interactive and enjoyable experience!
As a child of the 90's it was a major thrill for me to see the famous gator featured in Happy Gilmore. His name is Morris, and he has his OWN large enclosure where he can roam freely and enjoy his retirement from decades in film and TV industry.
Again, a GREAT EXPERIENCE!

This place is wild! It's $20 to get in but it's definitely worth it! There are so many awesome animals and you can get pretty close to some of them! Lots of tortoises walking around and some fish you can feed. The signage is really funny and just adds to the experience. We went pretty close to after it opened so it wasn't busy or crowded. Super unique experience, I would definitely recommend checking it out!
Jillian Hesse — Google review
This place is super cool! They unfortunately just had a tragic fire, so we didn't get to see any snakes, so we'll definitely come back for that when they finish renovations. It's a little expensive, but I was happy to pay the price to help them with their renovations. Everyone who works here is super friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely will return.
Tassja Stephens — Google review
It was an interesting experience. Personally I’m not a fan of crocs but it was worth checking it out while in the area.
It would help if the signage was better, maybe even somewhat interactive.
We did get to hold a young alligator, kids got a “certificate” hole punched by its teeth 🙈
PS also we have never seen such giant mallards, they were the size of Canada geese! (Hard to tell from the photo though)

This place was SO COOL! I am in total disbelief that such an interesting and unusual place exists in the mountains or Colorado. You get a VERY up close and personal experience at the park. The staff is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic - they really went above and beyond to make sure my questions were answered. The alligators are gigantic. There are tons of turtles roaming around freely, a few exotic birds, and tons of snakes and lizards (don’t worry, those are behind glass). The whole thing is really jaw dropping! I’m so glad I got to mark this place off my bucket list, but I’ll be back. Amazing!

An awesome place to spend a couple of hours. Price seemed a bit steep at first but was worth every penny. They do an awesome job taking care of their animals. Sad to see they have to "rescue" so many reptiles from people who should never have owned them in the first place.

Fantastic experience! We got greeted by the cutest cats and friendly workers who gave us a bucket of gator food to feed all the alligators in the park. They had rescue emus, turtles, and even some sharks! The best part was holding a baby alligator 🐊 Special shout out to the helpful worker who saved my bracelet from a gator filled pond! ❤️ You can tell the staff really enjoy what they do!

We loved this place! We were greeted by such friendly tortoises who loved the lettuce and the petting. Then to the snakes, monitors, etc, then over to the tilapia tanks where we tossed our handful of feed and watched them resembling more like piranha in the feeding. Then over to the alligators, crocodiles and more. I highly encourage all to go and support this wonderful venture. Review written by the writer of Last of the Knowers.

My partner and I visited when it was just above freezing, the gators outside were a bit slow at first. Eventually about noon they started to move around and going for the food we threw. It was a bit confusing walking through and at first we were hesitant if we could walk through certain doors or not, but most areas were accessible to, just not inside the gated areas where the animals were. Overall, we will definitely come back and recommend a visit for anyone passing through with extra time.

It's always a good time to visit the alligator farm. Even when it's icy outside, the alligators are provided with warm water to keep from getting too cold. You get to feed the gators and some fish, as well as hold a young gator. It's a good time for families with young kids, and they have a playground for them too.

What a great place to visit. I go every time I am close, the 25 dollars to get in is so worth it when you see the employees working hard to make sure the animals in their care are all good. They even give you a bucket of dog food to feed the beasts. And the tilapia are ready to eat too. They have small bins of fish food too. Thank you for the great day. Kee0 up the gooood work.

A Sanctuary, a working ranch. We have been there years ago and again now. They keep it running with the fees.
I'm a bit worried about the animals and some visitors (especially kids can be very rude), but they do their best to guarantee those creatures a good life. They had a devastating fire in April and lost so many animals. It still breaks my heart to think of it.
Maybe the fish tank could be improved? Looks quite uncomfortable.
Anyway, the workers there do their very best and I really respect that.
It's special, you can touch tortoises and an alligator. The nice guy told me they don't feel uncomfortable.
It's clear: those animals are NOT pets!

Was a great reptile park to visit. The staff was super friendly and you are able to feed the gators. You can tell the animals are loved and the whole park has a very relaxed vibe to it.
Very cool Historic Site!
I worked one summer for Fort Laramie NHS in Wyoming. It was supper cool to see some of the differences and a lot of the similarities between the two Forts. The guard house was the most striking difference. While not a good place to be at either Fort, Fort Garland's seemed a lot more tolerable place to be locked up.
Fort Garland has a lot of artifacts on display and good historical interpretation. My favorite was seeing Kit Carson's rifle!

This old fort turned museum was a great place to stretch our legs and learn some interesting things for just over an hour. There are some newer exhibits about Native Americans and the Buffalo Soldiers that used to live at and around the fort. A good and inexpensive stop if you're passing through.

My favorite museum visit in recent years!!
Amazing history and grounds with many different building and literally hundreds of first class display something for everyone even kids!
John Hames — Google review
This cultural center has lots of reading material and intriguing stories portrayed through well maintained displays. We learned about how this military fort was strategically placed in the borderlands and was designed to coerce Indian tribes onto reservations. It’s also rich in the history of understanding the lesser known stories of Indigenous Tribes of Colorado, Buffalo Soldier, and Spanish land grant communities. They have extremely informative exhibits; you can tell that the museum does their best to convey these historical perspectives through “as true-to-life as possible” displays.

I went here to this museum on a class field trip and it is really located in a unique spot with a fascinating history. I didn't realize how important this place was in southwestern history!
Hunter Markowich — Google review
We would probably go again once the new native-focused exhibit is complete. In general, pretty good museum, especially for the price. Unless it's an event, I would not consider this super kid friendly for under 10. It's a lot of reading, very little interactivity. Most of the exhibits were really interesting and informative, but you can tell some of the information is definitely...outdated--including one 'n' word on a poster within the buffalo soldiers exhibit. That was really disappointing, especially as it's not even a direct quote. I think the museum should strongly consider removing. If we went again, I would book the tour in advance; it's only $3 but you can't get one without advance notice. If you go in winter/spring, dress warm! The buildings are drafty!
Jessica H — Google review
The fort has a lot of history. You can see how the soldiers lived on a daily basis while serving. Anyone interested in military history visiting Fort Garland should stop and take part in this site.
Spinning Wheels Photography — Google review
This is an authentic fort with an authentic history from the late 1800s much of that history is documented in the different buildings of the fort. It may surprise you to learn that this four is located in the middle of a plane with the ability to see for long distances and the ability to travel in multiple directions rather than at a strategic choke point. In its heyday it was a key intersection between settlers from the East and the traditional native people who lived in this area.

While this is a historic military fort strategically placed in the borderlands and purposed to genocidally coerice Indian tribes onto reservations, it is also rich in the history of understanding a lesser known stories of Colorado -Indigenous, Buffalo Soldier, Spanish land grant communities. Two amazing exhibits that contemporize these histories thru art.

Total suprise, wasn't expecting much when we stopped. Quality displays for the history of the fort. Really enjoyed the Lego fort, the buffalo information and the buffalo soldiers. Also the staff was really nice and talked to us about the fort's history. Lastly, I appreciated the diversity in the gift shop, thought we might just end up with some plastic junk, but found a beautiful kids book on the buffalo soldiers and some hand made pottery. Thanks!

San Luis Valley Brewing Company is a laid-back brewpub in Alamosa, Colorado, offering housemade beers and a hearty comfort-food menu. It's situated in the scenic San Luis Valley with breathtaking views of the San Juan Mountains and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Visitors can enjoy a variety of specialty beers created on-site while indulging in delicious comfort food.
We are traveling through and we look for places that are locally owned and pet friendly as we have a small dog and we like to have her with us. They have great food and cooked chicken for our dog. We will stop here again next trip

Ugh terrible food. I order a crispy chicken sandwich… you could tell the brioche bun was directly pulled out of fridge and was cold, hard and stale. The kitchen staff didn’t bother to even try to toast it to freshen it up… super lazy. The piece of meat (because it wasn’t chicken) was disgusting. More like a pressed processed meat product more like the consistency of spam. That’s my pinky in the pic next to the thickness of the “chicken”
The Ruben sandwich says fresh sourkraut, nope def not.
When complained to manager, yeah she took it off the bill after We requested her to, but no apology. She just walked away.
Save your money folks, quality extremely poor.

Sat at the bar and ordered the 3 IPA’s they had on draft. The black IPA was my favorite. I ordered the Lucille sausage pasta and it was awesome. Entrees only served after 5pm. Great flavor and sauce was nice and creamy. The Caesar salad was outstanding with nice wide pieces of Parmesan cheese and tasty dressing. I ordered fries just to try them and they were crispy and very well seasoned. Great place to eat and have a few local beers.

Ate here a few weeks ago and I really enjoyed it. I got the loaded nachos and they were some of the best nachos I’ve ever had. The way they were completely covered with cheese was just the way I love it because I love cheese. And with the sour cream it was really good too. The guacamole was a little bit spicy for my taste but it was still pretty good. One of my friends got a pretzel as an appetizer so I had some of that with the cheese sauce and it was a very good pretzel. This place has a cool environment and a great place to eat downtown if you’re ever in Alamosa. They also have really good burgers too from what I could tell. Servers were very friendly and attentive. Would love to come back and try something else on the menu.

The food was great, they can easily get 5 stars if they offer gluten free options and hire another server (as the service was a bit slow)

5/12/23-This place came recommended, but it was a horrible food experience. Their beers were not good. The food was super greasy and bland. The service wasn't even good. Like for example we asked the server if the chocolate hummus was good and he said that not only had he never tried it, but that he had never seen anyone order it. We tried it an it was a mistake. It was super gritty and just tasted of dry coco powder. Just a bad food experience around and I would recommend that people get food elsewhere.

I was a little hesitant to go here because of some recent reviews complaining of long waits and bad food. Thankfully I was not disappointed! We had beers within minutes of sitting and food in 10-15. Our burgers were medium done as requested. Would definitely recommend if you’re in the area!

Stopped by on the way home from a long weekend vacation. The Valle Caliente is the best green chile beer I've ever had, and I'm from New Mexico! It tastes just like a fire roasted Hatch Green Chile distilled into a drink, but it's not too spicy.
The BBQ Veggie burger was really good, and the Brew Fries were top notch! My only note was the red potatoes my spouse had as a side with their burger were pretty bland. Our server Sean was amazing, and extra kudos to the dog-friendly outdoor seating!

Y’all are being some negative Nancy’s. We ordered the Burrito Bowl & the grilled Reuben, both dishes were very tasty and VERY filling considering the overall price paid. We didn’t order any beer, so “try at your own risk” (it’s beer, so I’d imagine it’s good).
For every hundred or so positive experiences, there’s one negative & they’re always the loudest. Give this place a try if you’re hesitant based on the reviews.
EDIT: We sat outside because of our dog, the server was very attentive & kind. Good place for the pups.

Very nice place. My husband and I already had dinner that evening and just decided to check it out. We end up having a beer and appetizer. I do not drink beer, I had beer cocktail and it was amazing. The service was super friendly, place design and atmosphere were catching. Oh, they have 100 year old volt door where you can see all gears and locks. Very cool idea. We liked it so much that we came back the next day for lunch after visiting sand dunes. Will be our go-to place when in Alamosa.

It was clean and the service was good. Party of 2, both got burgers. Ordered them medium well but they were way overcooked (cooked very well over a very hot flame or griddle). Fries were good. Not bad food, just not good. It was true dive bar quality.

Great little brewery. The downtown location was perfect. One of the best ruebens ever! And I like the varied sides.
The beers were super. We started with the stout and amber. The ipa was flavorful with just the right amount of bitterness.
We’ll be back.

A nice place to get lunch! They have good burgers and good beer! A lot of the lowest rated reviews mention long wait times for food. That was not what I experienced. Everything came out in a timely manner and was fresh. A new cook just started the day I came and the only issue I had was my burger patty was supposed to be well done, but it was switched with my husband’s and I got his medium/well patty and he got the well done patty. We didn’t realize this until about halfway through eating our burgers and at that point we didn’t feel it necessary to send them back.

Love the amber beer there stop all the time when we are driving to Colorado Springs .Today was sad maybe the staff was having a off day I order a green chili burger and my husband ordered a Rueben his was great but my burger should of been medium it was burnt . Thankful Noah our waiter was nice he didn’t charge me for it . FYI
Don’t serve burgers like that !!!come on I cooked for a living many many years ago I wouldn’t serve that to my customers.
With kind regards, Ali

Ate here while we were staying in Alamosa to visit the Great Sand Dunes. The vegan options were more limited in this area than other parts of Colorado, but this place had a great quinoa salad. It was filling and served in a crispy taco bowl. We also tried the homemade Black Cherry Cream Soda and thought it was very good. Portions were large, but quality was not sacrificed. Our waitress was also extremely friendly and helpful.

Went to Sand Dunes for a day trip from Denver last Saturday. Loved the atmosphere, the service was great, MOST of the food was great including the fresh salsa but the steak in the steak and cheese quesadilla was AWFUL. Couldn't even bite through it at all. Was like hard chunks of rubber. Tasted terrible too. Just an fyi.
The Shrine of the Stations of the Cross, located near the Blood of Christ Mountains, features 15 life-sized statues depicting scenes from Jesus's crucifixion. The sculptures are spread along a 1-mile pathway that offers visitors a chance to take a leisurely walk and reflect on each station. The trail is relatively easy, with some elevation gain, but it provides beautiful views and resting spots along the way.
Easy hike up to the church but the stars of the show are the fabulous 15 stages of the cross Passion) bronze statues. All so expressive and stunning. The views from the top are stunning. Shame there’s no information about the church itself and its origins

This place is great for a little pilgrimage. Moving sculptures and scripture explaining each scene of Jesus's passion. Must start at the bottom accessible from the highway to begin at the 1st Station. You can drive up a dirt road to the chapel where the 15th Station is (Resurrection added) but if you want to do the Stations in order you will have to walk down. The path is gravel, very easy trail and the whole journey is probably less than a half mile.

This place is beautiful. Not a terribly difficult walk, but bring water! Definitely bring a camera. Plan on taking some time to enjoy not only the bronze sculptures, the station plaques, the path, but turn around every now and then and take in the breathtaking scenery of the valley. The church at the top is a sanctuary to cool down before your descent. Not to be missed. This is a treasure.

20-minute climb at a steady walk to view the church. Peaceful beautiful view. The various statues are moving.

I wish I'd had more time to walk all the stations. The crucifixion/resurrection sculptures were beautiful and the chapel had an old-west mission, reverential vibe to it. Great views from the chapel and trail. Will return to catch the whole station trail.

We visited around noon and did not realize the walk would end up ascending 140 ft in elevation. It is a very pleasant hike and easy enough for most people as they have places to sit along the way if needed. The sculptures are incredible and it is worth the visit. The restroom at the top is not functioning so I recommend stopping at the visitor center across the street prior to your visit.
Laurie Szczesny — Google review
The 3/4 mile walk up to the chapel, viewing the several bronze sculptures of the Stations of the Cross along the path, is very worthwhile and, for many, would be very moving. It's pretty much the thing to do in San Luis. Do it in a cool part of the day as the path is in full sun. The handsome little chapel is very pleasant inside and a nice bonus.
What a very unique piece of art to check out! Pretty sure it's also someone's house. Definitely a place to check out. It's called Canos Castle.

A wonderful castle built from various items one might throw in the the garbage bin of life. The owner of this fantastical place is Cano and stupendous man of wisdom. He made us feel at home and offered some advice on our journey through the cosmos of life. There was something magical about this place I couldn’t put my finger but it changed us spiritually. He never asked for money but we felt compelled to donate some for his time and knowledge…

We drove by and stopped to take a few photos. Pretty impressive that it's made completely out of these materials. There wasn't much to see, but it lives up to what the pictures make it out to be. The owner wasn't there when we went, but it was great anyway. There's a cross on the top of the tower. I saw a cat on one of the metal balconies. So cute! The houses surrounding it were all more normal looking, so it's hard to miss! There is a Subway and Carl's Jr near there to eat at.

Sometimes...the hunt for various activities pays off. I wasn't aware of a serious adventure like this. This is a serious step back into time.
I have never seen such safety in place. Zero things to fear.
Honestly...we should have done the half day experience. We were exhausted when we finally got to the car. It was a long day.. The train never goes faster than 17 MPH. Yes...the views are one of a kind. Between the animals on the loose and the occasional sole person wandering the wilderness....it is relaxing especially for me. Nothing like the trains I ride in Chicago. The Chicago views can't compete with this experience.
My only complaint is....the stop for lunch. Please put down some iron grate cause walkers struggle to move on rocks.

Lovely fall train ride. A bit pricey considering there was no hot lunch as advertised. Seems there was a kitchen fire just a few days before we went. The did brown bag lunches, turkey sandwich, chips, apple, and some sort of cookie thing. Drink choices were mediocre lemonade and water. The train left the station late on the way out. Our return trip was very slow as the engine seemed to be having an issue. We even had to stop partway back because the engine was over heating. The scenery was exquisite though. I'd go again some day.

Did the Antonito Express Half-Day Trip. The train ride was great. Rode in the open car for half the ride. A crew member gives a tour along the route.
The scenery is great. You get great views of the mountains, hills, and valleys along the way.
It can get windy and a little cold climbing the mountains, so you might want to bring a jacket.
The half-day trip only has snacks and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. You might want to bring your own food and drinks.
Definitely worth the price.

This was a full day train ride from Antonito to Osier and back. We went through Toltec Gorge and had a great lunch. We sat in the parlor car and they gave us a nice bag and travel cup. Fem was our server and she was super nice. We really enjoyed this beautiful steam train ride.

This was such a fun experience! We camped the night before and took the bus from Antonito. Definitely recommend starting in Chama since we were so tired in the afternoon and wanted to nap. The whole trip is pretty but I felt better napping while we were in the less pretty sagebrush than I would have in the alpine portion. Our guide on the train was great and knew so much about the area. We will be back!

This was the main objective of our trip out west! The opportunity to ride the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad. What an experience! We believe all railroad travel is good and fun, and ride trains whenever possible, but we are not train enthusiasts or have any knowledge of trains. We think it's fun and enjoyable and this train was all fun, total enjoyment. We had tickets in the parlor car with great views out our window that lowered for fresh air. We were greeted with a nice danish, a bowl of fruit and coffee if wanted. Our car had a dedicated, knowledgeable guide who not only pointed out interesting sights and answered any and all questions, she also served any drink requests that we had, including cocktails if that is what you might desire. The train chugged thru the southern Colorado high plains as it made its way to the mountains and then weaved thru beautiful mountains and valleys with 2 tunnels. The vistas were more beautiful than I could describe. The scenery was breathtaking, and I was humbled at the beauty that lies within our incredible country. A spectacular day of weather on this spectacular train ride and followed with a smooth and comfortable bus ride back to our original departure point! Highly recommended!

This was a great day trip! We stayed in the general/main cabin and it was a nice experience! Very scenic and the guides/volunteers have a lot of great information! The lunch was a big cafeteria style lunch (nothing to write home about, but wasn’t terrible either). The train does turn around at the top so you get to see both sides for the different views on your trip!

Loved our day on the train! The scenery was gorgeous - with the aspen trees turning yellow in the end of September. Saw coyotes and pronghorn antelope. We spent most of the ride in the open air car, so we had fabulous views. The train goes max 12 mph so you’re never wind blown. But you do need sunglasses for the sun and cinders. Staff is very friendly. Everything well organized. Lunch was buffet style and very good. One hint: if you’re looking for coffee and a freshly prepared breakfast burrito before the train departs Antonito, go to the Sinclair gas station.

It's a long day to ride the train to Antonito CO and bus back to Chama NM but we'll worth the time. Since our trip is in the fall the colors were beautiful. Our bus driver, Bus Driver Dave made the trip back go by fast with the information about the area and a joke or two.
Randy Torres — Google review
A great fall experience. The leaves were beautiful. The buffet at the Osier station was beyond expectations. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars was they did not honor my request for seats on the left side of train. We rode from Antonito & the best side of the train is the left side especially if you’re into taking photos. Unfortunately on the day we rode the train it was too cold & windy for me to go to the open air gondola car to take photos. The docent was very friendly & informative. If you want souvenirs buy them in the morning as the gift shops are closed by the time you get back from the bus ride. When you arrive at the end you barely have time to use the restrooms before boarding the buses so there’s no time to shop then.

Was really fortunate to partake in the annual Cumbres & Toltec rail run as part of a photo workshop. We arrived in time for the end of Day 1 and the night photo shoot, which was technically challenging and I've been in the photo industry for 26 years! When the shots finally got nailed down, the final images were immensely satisfying. Such a specific and unique photo experience. Loved it. Our group rode day two on Engine 315. This was my first experience for anything this railroad intensive outside of a museum and, for me, it was a fantastic experience. The volunteers and crew are an absolute wealth of knowledge as are, frankly, the railroad fanatics that joined up. I love people who are passionate about their hobbies and these folks are fully committed, thoroughly obsessed, rail riders. I learned a ton about the history of the C&T, it's overall run from Antonito into Chama, and even a few interesting pieces of deep Americana: the James A Garfield memorial found in the absolute middle of nowhere was a brilliant addition to an already historic run. Look for the petroglyph just a few miles south of Antonito, up the hill on the west side of the track ... And the miner's grave somewhere just before Oshei. Either way: pack a camera with a good long lens because the photo ops are numerous... But benefit from the telephoto compression in a big way. PS the train may come down with a few mechanical issues, as ours did. I see zero reason to get upset: this engine is over 100 years old and runs unbelievably well for all of that. Keep in mind: this is how it was for runners and conductors of their day. Consider it a more authentic experience. Kill the need for a schedule and just enjoy the total feel of it all. 100% recommended.

This was a wonderful full day of beauty and fun. We had an excellent stay at the Victorian B&B the night before and walked about a block to the station. Then started with the bus to the CO train and spent the day with a stop for lunch (included) enjoying the sights coming back to Chama. My husband said this was the highlight of our vacation. Highly recommended. Take the parlor car if you have no kids.
Absolutely loved this place. I’m not typically a high desert enthusiast, but there was some thing magical about this place. The campgrounds, the views, the wildlife, such as bighorn, sheep, and cliff, swallows, and hummingbirds and much more played a role in mesmerizing me. Cannot wait to return!

Taos Ski Valley is a small community and ski resort located in Taos County, New Mexico. With a population of only 69 people according to the 2010 census, it was previously one of the four ski resorts in America where snowboarding was prohibited until March 19, 2008. Whether it's winter or not, visitors can challenge themselves by hiking Wheeler Peak near Taos Ski Valley while enjoying breathtaking views.
This is not a bad hike to a beautiful alpine lake. It starts off with some elevation gain, but the last mile is not bad. There were some people that camped out there and said the full moon made it an incredible evening. You can stop here on your way up or down for the Wheeler Peak trail. I stopped on the way up, but it could make a refreshing dip after a challenging hike.

There was a big wind storm one week before we came, so the trail was covered with so many broken branches and pines. The trail and lake are beautiful, and definitely will do this trail again perhaps in the spring. It took us about 1 hour and 20 minutes with a few stops to make sure we were on the right 'trail' and take photos.
We had hiking poles and both wore yaktraks. We were carrying snowshoes but didn't need them (shame!) Most other people we saw had poles.
Because there was so much debris, I wouldn't necessarily say this trail is well-marked or obvious (makes you doubt yourself if you're doing it for the first time!) There's not a lot of signposts besides at the beginning and end. We were completely dependent on following other footsteps from previous hikers. For a Wednesday late morning, we hardly ran into anyone, less than a handful of couples both on the way up and down.
This trail is definitely one that changes drastically based on the weather. There's supposed to be fresh powder in a few days, and I bet everyone will need snowshoes.

The Williams Lake trail is the signature hike in the Taos Ski Valley area. The trail head starts near lift 4 at Taos and its a moderate somewhat uphill hike to the lake which took us a little over an hour to get to. The hike back was all downhill for the most part and took around 45 minutes to get back. All in the hike was 2 hours total. In any event it was one of the coolest trails we've ever hiked and a definite must do if your in the Taos Ski Valley area during the summer time.

The hike to the lake took us about 2 hours, all uphill. The trail was well marked, and we were able to get around pretty easily even with wet ground and patches of snow. After the lake, we did some rock scrambling up to the waterfall, which was well worth the trip. Though, watch out for rocks disguised as snow - it'll eat your feet.

The Wild Rivers Visitors Center provides stunning views of the Rio Grande Gorge and offers a loop trail as well as access to a nearby fish hatchery. While it is only a few miles west of Questa, visitors must drive about 15 miles north via NM 522 to NM 378. The park rangers are friendly and knowledgeable, providing directions and information about the area. The Visitor Center may be small but has all necessary information for visitors.
Fantastic hidden gem. Incredible views, lots of well marked trails, and plenty of wildlife. The visitor center is small, but very informative. Detailed maps of the campgrounds and hiking trails are readily available from the friendly staff.
Be aware that campsites for large rigs is limited, but there are numerous spots for smaller rigs (<25') and tents.
Enjoy.

As others have stated, Wild Rivers BLM is definitely off the beaten path. However, its easy to get here down a main paved highway. The roads in the park are paved. The campsite loops are gravel/unpaved but ok. We travel in a 38 Renegade Valencia. We found only a few sites that could easily handle our size. (No tow vehicle). Site 27 in El Auguaje was long enough for even a tow vehicle. Trees are an obstacle backing in. Park time was 10 minutes max. A little maneuvering. Its worth the drive and the maneuvering for the campground & the views. The campgrounds are connected by a nice, one way paved road loop with a bicycle path. My wife loves to e-bike so this is perfect. Each site has a gazebo with a metal roof & picnic table. No electricity. No dump. Water is available at the toilets. This is boondocking at its best.
AT&T was 20mbs. Great! We camped at El Aguaje Campground in a 38’ Super C.

Out of the way, but best boondocking camp area we have ever been to. Covered picnic area at each site and plenty of space to stretch out. There is water at a couple of the campground areas, but no other services. However the solitude and hiking down the gorge makes it worth it.

Really really great views here. I went when there wasn’t a ton of people so I got to really enjoy the scenic views without the loud hustle and bustle. There’s a bunch of trails down to the river. The park rangers are quite nice and are great at directions. It’s about a 10 mile drive out to the park from Questa I think so don’t forget your water. (There is a water fountain near the trail though, but I wouldn’t depend on that.)
I've visited here long enough ago to have met Dr.Westphall and still make the trip from Taos every now and then. Today was windy and crisply cold and I was the first visitor of the day. I came especially to create a review and to see how the place is doing. It's doing fine by all appearances.

This was an unexpected stop and find. It has a beautiful park, Chapple, and a very well-done museum. I learned so much while I was here about what our soldiers did and went thur. This is a must stop if you get the chance.

We have been 5-6 times and it is a good place with good exhibits, but it is a hard place for anyone who was a youth during those years and after.
It took my husband the Vietnam Army vet who served in the jungle up by the DMZ a couple of trips before he could go in the Chapel and the museum and the films are still hard and he has to take a break and go outside by himself.
As hard as it is he has taken most of the Grand kids there so it is never forgotten.
He has decided to be buried in the New Mexico state Veterans cemetery just down the hill from the Memorial .

This is a really well done memorial tucked away in a beautiful mountain setting. It's very quiet and peaceful, with lots of places to sit and reflect. There is a very nicely curated museum, a small chapel, an amphitheatre, and personalized bricks lining the walk way with veterans names.
Inside the museum, there are a lot of unique sections, like an area about POWs, another feature on the Montagnard people and much more.
The drive from Raton is beautiful, through Cimarron Canyon State Park. It is well worth a detour from I-25. The Westphall family has done a truly amazing job with this memorial.

Such a heart felt place. It was hard to keep a dry eye to think of those that gave there lives for the freedom we enjoy. And for the ones who fight now to keep that freedom. The place was spectacular. There was history from all branchea of the service. A chapel and a place to honor the fallen. Words are not enough to express what this place stands for. You have to go and see it for yourself. Everyone has to see this.

Amazing story of it's development and the earliest memorial for Vietnam Veterans particularly those that paid the ultimate sacrifice. The Chapel is particularly poignant. Clearly the care taken with care of the grounds is a testament to Doc's founding (WWII veteran and father of Vietnam veterans who served inckuding one son who died) of this special place.
I could've spent more time in the small, but thoughtful museum adjacent to the memorial.
Clearly this is a living memorials as features have recently been added such as a small fountain and outdoor seating bear the chapel as well as use of the property as federal veteran cemetary.
Last year, they helped my wife for over an hour with boots we did not purchase there. We are buying our new boots and skis from them. Very happy.

This place has it all for your skiing/boarding needs. Whether it's renting or buying your own gear. Boots, clothing, skis or just getting an adjustment. Best of all the employees are immensely helpful. Have a question or concern - just ask.

Rented Ski Stuff for the only slopes on the mountain i was comfortable with to be closed. Jan told me “You can cry all you want but i won’t refund you.” No solutions like “Maybe you can just wait it out” or something. The customer service here was far beyond disappointing. I couldn’t really get a word in anyway. Super disappointed

Rude, ranting at us because our mask wasn't on completely before we entered the building, the only business that treated us that way while at Angel Fire Skiing for 5 days. If I hadn't already made a deposit, would have walked out. Every year we spend over a thousand dollars here. We purchase the whole family ski rentals and LOTS of accessories, such as backpacks, goggles, helmets and whatever they want for their vacation, as the family shops when they get there. Won't ever darken their doorsteps again.

Fanatic experience at winter sports. Went in several times over the holiday weekend. Everyone was always super friendly and helpful. First class group here.

Do not make the mistake of renting for multiple days at once or renting in advance, they offer no refunds for any reason. There are probably more reasonable places to rent than this.
Kendra Phillips — Google review
Usually has really good equipment. Used to have very good service. Has gone downhill with their kindness and service over the years. They will only serve a few amount of people per day and pick and choose who they want to rent to. Calling the day before to make sure that they’re open the next day will not suffice. Might have to go to Eagle Nest to rent.

Great Customer Service. The staff helping with the ski's was friendly and knowledgeable. Big help with my two kids.

Poor customer service, super distracted employees when we were trying to rent gear and the management was not willing to let us edit our reservation after we made it. Our plans changed and they would not let us return the equipment early, so we ended up paying for days when we won’t even have the rentals 👎

Eddie is the BEST & so knowledgable! I have always had trouble finding boots that are comfortable because of the metal plates in my leg, but he was able to customize a pair of ski boots by heating & forming them specifically to fit around the metal hardware. I had zero problems or pain at all while skiing this trip! Everyone in the shop is so friendly and willing to help out customers! Highly recommend these guys.
Absolutely stunning pottery and very welcoming people. We were shown around and learned about the artists specific process in creating these delightful pieces. We got the cutest cups there and cannot wait to use them. Highly recommended!

We’ve visited JoAnne and Kevin’s gallery twice so far and the selection is simply amazing. They are true artists who have mastered their craft, and the colors imparted to the pottery from their wood fired kiln are really beautiful. The pottery that’s available ranges from artistic to functional, all very high quality, and most importantly they are so helpful in explaining the different aspects and features of whatever you’re interested in. Initially, we just happened to be driving by and saw their sign, then decided to make a u-turn and go back, and it was such a fun experience. Definitely a highlight of our day!

This place is INCREDIBLE. A must stop on your way to Taos. It was so cool getting a tour of the process and getting to see how much work goes into each piece. I could have stayed in the gallery for hours. Also I am obsessed with my new mug!

I had the pleasure to meet Joanne and Kevin, two very special artisans. They took the time to share their craft and part of their story. The pottery they each produce is beautiful and different. Everything fired with wood in an oven Kevin built. The ash and heat produces the most beautiful pieces. They have such a wide variety from coffee cups to large vessels. I bought several pieces. I plan to buy more in the future. I am so grateful to include Kevin and Joanne in my life.

JoAnne and Kevin were so welcoming and it was amazing to be able to tour their studio and learn about their process. Their work is absolutely beautiful. True pieces of art. And I fell in love with the beautiful features of the wood firing process. We bought several beautiful pieces that we will treasure forever and will definitely return whenever we’re in the area!

An absolute treat - art, a great view, and wonderful people! The folks at Enchanted Circle Pottery were so nice, and they had so many wonderful creations. They even gave us a behind the scenes tour! The colors in their pottery are purely from the fire. No dyes or oxides! Their meticulous firing process creates the rich array of colors. Every piece was truly unique. Each mug was even a slightly different shape, so you could find one that fits your hand perfectly. Along with amazing art pieces, there were inventive practical pieces like mug warmers, cup lids, and silverware display vases. We came home with several pieces and wonderful memories.

My husband and I set off on a scenic drive when we happened upon Enchanted Circle Pottery. Kevin greeted us like we were old friends and graciously showed us around while explaining how they came to be and the unique process they use to achieve the beautiful finish on their pieces. We selected a few pieces to take home, but this unique olive oil bottle is my favorite. It is gently “squished” in the middle to fit in your hand. Thank you so much Kevin and Joanne!

Day trip around the Enchanted Circle Loop had us stopping at the Enchanted Circle Pottery Studio. What a treat to see their 22 years of invested time building their home, studio, wood burning Kiln, and a place to see great art being made. As an old Potter from the late 60s, it made my knowledge seem very small at best.

Great functional art, as well as exquisite display pieces. Their unique wood-fired clear glazing process produces one-of-a-kind natural finishes. Well worth stopping in!
Taos Pueblo, an ancient settlement belonging to the Taos-speaking Puebloan tribe, is located about a mile north of modern-day Taos, New Mexico. It is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in America and features twin five-story adobe complexes situated on either side of Rio Pueblo de Taos against the stunning Sangre de Cristo mountains. These buildings are believed to have been completed by 1450 AD and serve as a prime example of ancient Pueblo architecture.

I'll never travel to Taos without this trip planner again
The Millicent Rogers Museum, located 4 miles northwest of the Plaza in Taos, features a stunning collection of Native American and Hispanic art. The exhibits include in-house designed jewelry, folk art from various Hispanic cultures, Navajo weaving and modernist jewelry created by Millicent Rogers herself. The museum's main focus is on the beautiful black-on-black pottery by Maria Martinez from San Ildefonso Pueblo during the 20th century.
This museum is fantastic, it’s so attractive, educational and beautifully layout, you can spend hours admiring the gorgeous collection. The staff is so helpful and I think they were mostly volunteers but I admire the commitment to do a great job.
If you are in Taos are is a must see.

We toured most of the galleries in this museum that features historic and contemporary SouthWest US and Indigenous art. Very well organized, described, and displayed. They require masks and have air purifiers in most of the galleries (over a dozen). Interesting history of the life of Ms. Rogers as she was a wealthy person who treasured art of the region. Modest admission price of $10. Recommended for those interested in SW and Native American art. The museum is about a 15 minute drive from downtown Taos in a desert setting. Free parking near the entry. Group tours available.

The museum is a former home donated to be the place for all the different art pieces. Millicent is not the only artist you will find here. But the most spectacular pieces I found here were the jewelry pieces. Those truly captivated me. Her art is interesting to look at- all have an animal in them to accompany the individual. It was a easy 2 hour visit.

My partner and I visited this gem of a museum in August 2023, and we enjoyed our visit immensely. We are not art critics by any means, but we loved seeing the SW art by area artists. Our visit was greatly enhanced by Karen Chertok, the director of education at the museum. She talked with us at great length about Millicent and her family and her life and how it led to this fine museum being opened by her son. We also enjoyed the size of the museum; it's not huge and overwhelming. Instead, it is a manageable size and a great way to spend a few hours admiring and learning more about local art traditions and artists.
We highly recommend visiting this museum and talking with Karen (if she's available).

Taos Plaza is a lovely public plaza with many craft shops and cafes, as well as a relaxed atmosphere. The plaza is located in the heart of Taos, which has a rich history and cultural scene. The scenic drive from Santa Fe is breathtaking, and the changing vegetation with altitude is amazing.
Free parking behind the plaza!
Lots of small soups filled with art and craft, restaurants and coffee shops.
Less of a buzz compared to Santa Fe but also less of a tourist trap.
The scenic drive from Santa Fe is breathtaking. Changing vegetation with altitude and which side of the mountains you're on. From high desert to green and lush to Alpine.

This is a fabulous location to walk around and explore. The buildings set against the blue sky is gorgeous. The feeling of the place is exotic and historical at once, and also sad.
I won’t go into detail on the history but it is heavy to walk around and know how we treated some cultures and that that treatment continues through today.

So, you know, I don't give one star ratings without serious thought... I was SAD to shop here. I had been here YEARS AGO, and had consistently great experiences. This time, I walked through the plaza shops and found that 98% of the people working the businesses had the personality of a WET NOODLE. I was actually looking to spend some money and was either ignored completely or placated. A greeting, or eye contact goes a long way. One young lady in a store was reading a book and NEVER LOOKED UP to see me or anything. Must have been a good read! Of ALL the shops, there are TWO I would consider returning to and spending some money. One on the north east corner across from the restaurant that offers museum quality items and the other on the south side of the plaza that sells rocks and minerals, they get 5 stars and will see me again. Hoping to write a better review next time:(

Happened upon this funky little shopping center when I happened upon Taos on a random road trip. Fun times and the car show that was occurring upon my arrival made it even more of an impressive backdrop! Quite the collection of ancient vehicles as you can see from pictures. Go here if you want that good ol' stereotypical southwestern shopping vibe for sure.

Once a beautiful location to visit. Now a dump with about 1/3 of business empty in the plaza. Taos used to have so much character and ambiance, especially the plaza. Now it's just a notch above Espanola (sorry, Espanola). Run down locals hate anything that improves the area. Had someone try and build a decent hotel a few years back, they vandalized his business. You would think with the reputation Taos has they would have good hotels. We've stayed in a few there and again mediocre at best. What's going on Taos? You were once the darling of the state now just a run down highway stop. Love NM Just disappointed in what Taos has become. Long time NM resident....
I can't believe I have not been here before now. It's minutes past the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and single handedly in my favorite thing I have seen since moving to Taos!

Great idea. However there is only one house you can go in, and only the first room of it is free.
There is a very short trail around another house you can take pictures from.
Only worth driving if you plan to visit Rio Grande Gorge Bridge which is close by.
Update from the owner: we offer several options to tour homes in the community. The self-guided tour is only for the visitor center but we have a guided tour that is 1.5 hrs and gives guests access to view our educational campus facilities. There is also a private tour option and that is available by appointment only and offers 1-3 residences to be viewed.
However none of the guided tour options were presented in the visitors center.

Took the Friday guided tour. Well worth it! Appreciated the small group size of 12-15. Ryan, our guide was super knowledgeable and answered every question from the group. His presentation was very adaptable & he never seemed impatient. You could tell he truly believed in this concept of eco-environment. Great investment to take the guided tour 1] to hear the history & continued vision, 2] to receive further explanation of the various structures, 3] to be able to enter some buildings and hear detailed explanations. We drove further from the Visitor Center to see on-going development of the community. We hope to come back & rent some nights there.
The website is great. Stop at the Royal Gorge Bridge on the way there.

I did the self-guided tour which was the only option at the time that we were there, although I did find it interesting, it was not worth the $9 entrance fee. I think we spend about 10 minutes there.
The whole community as a whole didn’t really feel welcoming with signs everywhere saying no trespassing, private property, etc. Since the self-guided tour was so quick in the small visitor center/earth ship, it would have been nice to be able to walk around and see the other houses at least from the outside, but instead I left with a feeling that I had entered an uptight unwelcoming gated community.
Nikolaj Hines — Google review
Definitely an interesting project and place, but the "self-guided tour" is not worth the 9 USD that they charge! I felt kind of scammed! Organizers should review this.
I guess it's better to go for the extended tour at 20 USD that lasts 90 min.
(PD: I did read the materials, slides/panels and watched the video... still not worth the 9 USD).

Was here in December 2022. A very interesting place. A guide in the main structure admits that there are no new ideas here. What has been done is compelling until one realizes that this doesn't scale very well and for the most part is only applicable to dry places.

If you want an insight as to how amazing sustainable architecture and living can be, you must stop here and take a tour of the Earthship. Places like this make you scratch your head and ask why we are not integrating our homes into nature more frequently. The self-guided tour offers a lot for a relatively small place. The individuals who work/volunteer here are extremely friendly and happy to answer any questions. I definitely learned quite a bit and will certainly figure out how to incorporate these elements into a future home. Great selection of books in the gift shop for continued learning. Definitely worth stopping here and checking out the Earthship community.

I booked a tour online for $7. The visitors center has the same layout as a home except for a few rooms and is the only building you get to enter. Your self guided tour continues outside on top of the building and around another building across the parking lot. Honestly, I was happy to donate to the cause but would probably prefer to rent a home for a weekend or week to really experience the lifestyle. It's a really interesting place and I appreciate them opening their doors and showing another way of doing things.

It's an incredible one-of-a-kind concept. Beautiful aesthetically as well as conceptually. I'd recommend it to anyone, but it's worth knowing that the self guided experience is somewhat limited. We wished we could have seen other vessels than just the visitor's center, but we understand they're being used to support the concept as a whole in other interesting ways.

My partner and I had the absolute pleasure of staying in the Phoenix earthship for two nights earlier this week. It is stunning, and that is an understatement. To wake up with snow outside, the sun streaming in and creating a tropical paradise in the outdoor garden, but being surrounded by plant life while still having all of the normal amenities. Nothing can replace that. We didn't have hot water for showers sadly we couldn't get the solar hot water to work. But everything else was amazing. The wood stove was a surprising new addition as we had watched previous YouTube videos. But it definitely made the chillier nights more cozy and comfortable.
It was adorably fun to see tiny lizards, the budgie in the outdoor garden, the goldfish, turtle and chickens. To see that you can live within and alongside nature and create no obstruction to the serenic view that envelopes this beautiful community. It is worth seeing, and experiencing for yourself how humans can cohesively live with nature. ❤️ It has inspired us to definitely look at getting one ourselves some day in a decade or so. If you don't get a chance to stay, at least visit the biotecture visitor centre and request a tour. You can still learn everything and see the beauty this way too.
The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is a remarkable bridge in America that stretches over the Rio Grande Gorge, measuring an impressive 650 feet long. It is situated near the Greater World Earthship Community, where self-sustaining homes made from recycled materials and earth can be found. These homes are both eco-friendly and stylishly designed to blend seamlessly with their surroundings on Taos mesa.
Cool area. Do not attempt to walk on the bridge if you have a fear of heights. You are really high up. There is a lot of movement when big trucks drive across the bridge. Great views!

Lovely view. Went in December so it was chilly. I've been to the Rift Valley in Kenya and this is a smaller version but still worth a look. Not much parking and the walk to the bridge is along a narrow dirt track. Local drivers dont slow down.

This is really just a bridge, you stop before or after it and walk to be on the sidewalk part that over looks the gorge. It was pretty awesome. The road coming from Santa Fe was sketchy for a bit, really steep, narrow, and dirt, but we made it in our minivan. The bridge has cars going over it, and when a semi drive over it, the whole thing was vibrating. Kind of terrifying but so cool too!

The gorge was beautiful. It wasn't overcrowded, but I was surprised at how many people actually were there. If you aren't able to climb on rocky terrain and over a small ledge, you may want to park at the other end of the bridge and not at the parking area. in the parking area, there is restrooms and picnic tables. It would be a great place for a family photo or senior photos.

A beautiful site to see!! A short drive from Taos, breathtaking views, and I even saw two bighorn sheep a male and a female!! There were quite a few people there and I think some people selling various items. There's also a restroom.

Great attraction which is a short drive from Taos. The views are breathtaking. Make sure to see the gorge from both sides of the bridge. The views are spectacular. It was super windy and that can make certain people feel nervous. There is a parking area before you get to the bridge. It is depressing to see suicide call numbers but seems like a good service.

Well worth the drive for this amazing beauty. The views are insane and only made better by the picturesque New Mexico sky. Park at the rest stop and walk across for unparalleled photo ops.

Beautiful place to explore! Wear sunscreen, the sun is usually pretty strong here. The bridge walk is narrow, but worth the steps for the view in the middle.

Gorgeous view but be careful walking out onto bridge. It’s not 100% pedestrian friendly. The sidewalk is not wide. Be aware that large vehicles will make the bridge bounce.

Great side attraction that is free and worth the short drive out of Taos. The views are amazing and there was plenty of parking at the rest stop just west of the bridge.
I only had two minor complaints about the experience. The restrooms were closed, probably due to the season. Also, there didn't seem to be any established route to get onto the bridge from the rest area. You basically had to walk a "deer trail" and hop over a guardrail to get onto the bridge.

Just a short drive from Taos is this beautiful and spectacular bright and rest area. I didn't know about this place, but it kept popping up on my phone. It was an area where you can walk along the rails. On our visit, vendors were set along the rest area. The bathrooms were clean. It's an awesome site to see and it's free.

Venturing from Austin, Texas to Taos, we made sure not to miss the awe-inspiring bridge with breathtaking views of the Rio Grande River. The drive was absolutely worth it, offering a tranquil escape with the added joy of watching people stroll along both sides of the bridge.
The Taos Visitor Center, also known as the Taos Pueblo Collective, is a hub of friendly and informative specialists ready to assist in planning your dream vacation. It's not just a tourist center; it's a place where local artisans sell their handcrafted goods without being exposed to the elements. Visitors can meet well-known artists and purchase beautiful crafts directly from them. The staff provides valuable information about area attractions, parking, restaurants, and more.
Nice staff! Pointed out all the fun things to do and outlined it in a very easy to understand map. Made the most of our time in Taos!

It’s less of a Tourist Center and more of a place people sell the things they have hand made without being exposed to the elements. The artists here are great - I bought stuff and was happy with my purchases. I gave it 4 stars bc it’s not a Tourist Center and there were no brochures which is what I was looking for

Arrived at 3pm and whole place seemed abandoned - homeless person moved into the porch. Not sure what is happening here..

Everyone here was incredibly helpful and friendly. I met an artisan named Deene who not only had amazing beadwork but welcomed me to Taos with warm touching conversation. I won’t forget my stop here and highly recommend it for anyone visiting the area.

The Taos Visitors Center is an awesome experience. Local artisans have a plethora of work on display and for sale. A great introduction to Taos and the area with knowledgeable ambassadors on hand to answer questions.

Friendly people everywhere! Helpful at the desk, and if you're lucky, you will go on a day where there are natives selling beautiful crafts. We met a well-known artist and bought a beautiful painting from her. We got to chat for a while and learn some things that we never would have known if we had just walked into an art gallery and saw her art hanging on a wall.
Same with a woman who was selling beautiful jewelry. We talked with her for quite a while, and my husband bought a drum that her dad had made. It was a pretty amazing experience.

Clean bathrooms, visitor information, & free wi-fi available. A recent addition is the Taos Pueblo Artist Collective. Buy jewelry, beadwork, paintings, Taos drums, & photography from Taos Pueblo directly from the artists on site.

Five stars to the ladies behind the counter. They were very friendly, welcoming and insightful but the location itself was rough…. All the brochure racks were empty other than a few magazines. We went on a day when locals were selling jewelry but that was the only thing to see. No maps, no brochures, no information or coupons.

Cell signals are rare around the Enchanted Loop so I went in for a New Mexico map. I also picked up some brochures and enjoyed browsing the native jewelry and art several vendors had for sale.
