The direct drive from San Salvador to Antigua is 166 mi (267 km), and should have a drive time of 4 hrs 10 mins in normal traffic.

El Rosario Church, located in the historical area of San Salvador, is a stunning piece of architecture designed by Ruben Martinez and completed in 1971. Considered to be one of the most magnificent churches in Central America, its concrete exterior disguises an arched roof where natural light creates a rainbow effect on the altar and reflects off metal and rock surfaces. The church is also home to Padre Delgado's grave, a prominent figure in Central American independence.
This is one of my favorite and most beautiful churches in the world. The architecture is very unique, and although the exterior may look ancient and simple, once you're inside, you'll be surprised and amazed by the beauty of the church. Beautiful rainbow-colored rays cast from the stained glass windows onto the ceiling. You must see this church if you're in El Salvador."

Foreigners need to pay $2 as entry fee, the lighting reminded me of Le Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, it was quite beautiful.
Thomas Joseph — Google review
it's a majestic work of art in the heart of historic San Salvador. The surrounding area is not ideal ( safety, dirty) but once you get there, go inside and take time to enjoy the beauty of this Church. it's well thought and very original.
NJ Cruz — Google review
From the outside you would easily miss it. It looks like a concreet dirty building. But once you are inside its beautifull. The light through all the colored pieces glass are magic. Best to visit it by a free walking tour. Try to find the eye in the church.

If you don't see this church while in El Salvador, you need to sucker punch your best friend. This place is beyond beautiful with a very rich, relevant history. The architecture is ingenious, it's one of those places that humbles you upon arrival because you realize the builder is light years ahead of you in intellectual ability. The stained glass, the floor, the sculptures, it's so simple in design yet exceptionally brilliant in its final form. I am posting pics but they don't do it justice. They have an eye in the church, the all seeing eye, there are so many hidden gems it could easily take a few hours to deciper them all.

Unbelievably this church charges $2 to enter.
I only wanted to go in to see the windows and luckily they'd taken so long setting up their stupid signs I had already taken photos through the door.
If you still want to go in, note that the entrance is on the side road, and the gate has no information regarding opening times or the ridiculous charge.
A random passerby told me it opened at 2pm while 2 staff stood inside the gate just watching me obviously trying to get it.
Basically just proving that religion is a scam.
Zandrah \m/ — Google review
It is so beautiful inside at any time during the day. The best time is 3pm for the full rainbow effect. Cost $2 per person to enter and masks are still required. They sell them for 0.25 cents each.
Kerrie Moran — Google review
One of the most fascinating architectural structures I’ve ever seen! Entrance is in the right side.

What a beautiful modern church. From the outside it looks quite unusual but inside it is a colorful quiet place in the middle of the historic center. We visited it around noon. It is surely even more impressive in the early morning. The entrance is 1$ for locals and 2€ for tourists. The natural ventilation invites you to stay even a little bit longer on hot days.
Stefan Br?ndlinger — Google review
Ugly on the outside but beautiful on the inside!
Loved it and glad I went
Tito Mejia — Google review
While we didn’t spent a lot of time on the eastern side of town, the Church of Rosario was definitely one of my list of places to see for their gorgeous mosaics they cascade with the afternoon sun.
Tourists pay $2 to enter the beautiful church for what will surely be a light to remember. The church is stunning with areas for prayer and friendly staff. There isn’t a whole lot of information posted to learn about when inside, which is a shame given we pay to enter.
Visitors are not permitted when mass is held. Otherwise, take a moment to come in and soak in the beauty.

I really enjoyed coming to this church.
The stations of the cross are beautifully done.
Very modern. Very artistic. Very emotional.
The church is so unique and worth seeing.

Unassuming building from the outside but once you get in- I’m sure you would be amazed just like me.
I love the stained glasses inside ( reminds me of a church in Rio de Janeiro) and the Station of the Cross is so artistic…
The entrance gate is on the other side and they charge 2 USD for foteigners/ 1 USD for locals…

This church can serve as an example for the saying 'Don't judge the book by its cover". An ugly building in an unattractive block on the outside, a beautiful gem on the inside. $2 entry, probably good for the whole day if you'd like to see both the morning and afternoon light. Closes at 16.45.
Petr Vasicek — Google review
A Nice church worth a visit. A small donation is required to enter. This helps maintain the church.
Osiris Escobar — Google review
Absolutely stunning! Make sure your legs are covered (as a woman) before going in or they'll make you cover up.
The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador is the seat of the Archbishop and features stunning architecture. Visitors can also explore Parque Central, where they will find the National Theater and Cathedral of Santa Ana. A must-visit destination is Joya de Ceren, a preserved Mayan village referred to as El Salvador's Pompeii due to a volcanic eruption. While exploring the ruins, visitors need a guide to explain their significance.
So local here you don’t feel like a tourist . Street food eat with local nd enjoy the beautiful city .

It is a nice big church building, well maintained, very nice paintings, the ceiling is well designed, the lights are good, floor well polished.
Mass was on, when I visited, and it’s very loud and chaotic outside, but it’s peaceful inside, they have a good sized gathering for mass, and all are welcomed to attend.

Amazing place. The best part of it is that you feel safe walking around.

Very nice Catholic church to visit here in El Salvador. If your in town as a tourist, it's a good few hours to stop by and check out the beautiful architecture and details. You can spend around 1:00 to 3 hours depending on how much you choose to check out. There was no fee for entry. It's two levels and on the lower floor there are a few tombs. Definitely worth the visit just to see the place.

It's a quaint humble church. There's a mausoleum of the priest who was murdered in the church. We went to mass and it was lovely.
Gabriela Arevalo — Google review
I was never a fan of the architectural style of the Cathedral but it has grown on me, specially at night. It's a beautiful sight. It is grand, husky and tall which I am guessing was the main goal when they designed it.

This a such a beautiful Cathedral. The stations of the cross hauntingly beautiful. Saint Oscar Romero is buried here.
When you step into this Cathedral, I stepped into the story of the Church in El Salvador: a story of great suffering and persecution, but also of enduring grace.
Stop in for Mass, Confession, prayer, and to venerate the great Obispo y San, Óscar Romero.

Very nice outdoor/indoor plaza. They have a large verity of food options, but the plaza does give off a business vibe considering it's connected to the hotel and the world trade center. There isn't much to do other than eat or have a coffee. They do have markets every now and then which are worth the visit. Lots of hand crafted stuff. And parking is almost always easy. Would be nice though if they gave more reasons to visit rather than just food or business.

I'll never travel to Antigua without this trip planner again
El Boquerón National Park is a volcanic complex situated at the top of San Salvador volcano, offering excellent hiking trails that lead to the rim of El Boquerón crater. The park provides a refreshing experience away from the heat and showcases beautiful local plants and animals within its vicinity. It is recommended to tour the Centro Historico in the morning before visiting El Boquerón National Park in the afternoon.
Cool experience if you’d like to do some outside exploring
If you’d like to go down into the crater, please ask for a guide and make sure you have snacks and water cause you’ll need energy to return

The hike took about an hour to complete. It is a wonderful ecosystem with many different flowers and fauna. The hike is not too strenuous and it's definitely kid friendly. The view from the top of the volcanic crater is stunning. On your way down the hill, there are many fruit vendors on the side of the street selling many wonderful fruits and veggies. Please stop by to buy something before you leave.

Siempre bonito visitar.

If you are visiting El Salvador, you should not miss this stop. Likewise, if you live here, a free afternoon or a date here doesn't hurt.

Great views. Go on weekdays. Locals say weekends gets full and parking is limited.
Next time I'll the the tour down to the bottom on the volcano, which is about 4 hrs down and 5 -6 up. Visibility is usually poor because it's almost always cloudy or foggy. Overall, awesome experience. Trails to the lookout places is not that bad. Just take your time and enjoy the views.

Amazing. easy day trip to the very top of a dormant volcano! A few steps make it a slight workout, a perfect trip with children.
The access at the top is narrow and parking is difficult and limited. There a several tourist shops and restaurants at the top and needless to say that the views of the capital are breathtaking! ❤️🇸🇻

A nice place to visit and be refresh from the heat. It would be nice for a tour guide to share about the local plants and animals that can be found in the area.

My first time here was November 14th and I do not regret it. First off, I would like to say how refreshing the cool weather was in this area. I mean Wow, I could see myself living in an area like this! I was instantly put at ease because the last this I really wanted to do walk trails and climb stairs in high heat. I believe I payed a $3 entrance fee as a foreigner, not bad. The beautiful weather in this lush national park made exploration a breeze. There are several vendors along the way just in case you need refreshments. The scenic views of volcanoes and exotic vegetation are sights to behold. Do yourself a favor and visit this beautiful park.

I recommend bringing insect repellent and sunscreen.
The weather is cool and we see a variety of plants that if we want to buy some there are two or three stalls and they also have sweets.
The place is clean and well maintained.
The best of all is the view of the boquerón, it is impressive.

Beautiful views of the caldera just a short 10 minute hike from the parking lot. Very nice views of San Salvador from a tower in the parking lot as well.
The hike to the Volcano viewing area has some very steep steps. Those with limited mobility may not be able to make it.

It's absolutely amazing. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and make sure your phone is charged to take pictures. There is construction going on in the park itself, so be prepared to navigate around what's being worked on. The street up has plenty of street vendors, but be kind and tip those who help you park ($5 goes a long way). The park has parking, but more than likely, you'll park on the outside on the side of the road. The new construction is enhancing lookouts, but be careful with small children and dogs. There are lots of stray dogs. If you have water, be sure to share. Enjoy the views 😎

A very beautiful place. Recommendable to visit. It's nice to walk and take some air. Relaxing. Don't go to the restricted area it's too dangerous. Bring some water because it's exhausting to go up. Put a comfortable shoes as well.

Interesting natural place.
You can go walking to the top of volcano El Boqueron, and see the 1.5 km volcano crater.
Pedestrian access roads to the top are being renovated. New viewpoints are being built. For SAFETY, in the so-called MIRADOR DE CRISTAL be attentive, for safety reasons there cannot be more than 15 people on the platform.

About 6 different views of the same volcano. Cool history behind it, but quite a lot of driving back and forth to take the 10-15 min hike. Vendors selling water at the entrance can be a bit much of annoyance.

Definitely a must visit when staying in San Salvador!
It’s an easy 25 minute Uber ride from the city. I’d highly recommend negotiating a driver to stay and take you back since you’ll spend at most an hour here.
It’s a short hike from the park entrance ($2 for tourists) and the views of the volcanic crater are spectacular. On a nice day, seeing the entire area and magnitude of it all is quite impressive. There are a few viewpoints to lookout from and even a small cafe near the top.
If you’re looking for an easy daytrip out of town, would definitely add this to your list.

This is one of the closest volcanos you can visit from the city center. It's a 28 minute drive from the city centre to the park entrance. Uber is available to take you there as well as pick you up and bring you back. Upon arrival you will pay Two dollars per person per admission. The Uber was nine dollars each way. There are lots of options for food and beverage as well as souvenirs. It's an easy ascent to the lookout where you have a glass floor and a great view of the Caldera.
Stephen Suley — Google review
There's a ton of construction happening, building infrastructure here. There's a nice little interpretative center, well developed trails, several restrooms and what will soon be snack stations. Great lookouts. Parking is limited and the road is narrowed with cars parked on one side as you near the park.

Finally went here and wow. My mind was blown and got some great pics with my drone. Drone friendly. They upgraded everything and it looks pretty. If you are not from El Salvador go with family so you can pay the non tourist price.
Joya de Ceren is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in El Salvador, known as the "Pompeii of America". The site features the ruins of a Mayan farming village buried by volcanic ash from an eruption in AD 595. Everyday items left behind provide insights into ancient planting, home building and food storage. Structures such as the shaman's house and tamascal sweat lodge have been preserved.
A well preserved site of how our ancestors lived due to the ashes from a volcano eruption. With the help from French funding, this site looks amazing. Texts are in Spanish, English and French. The overhead structures helps protect the site and guests from the sun and rain. The replica sauna was pretty cool.

Amazing place to visit in El Salvador. A visit to this wonderful place makes you feel like you are back in time. The Mayans were just having a good time when the volcano started raining down on them. They had to flee in haste and left everything behind.
The first place to visit at this location is the museum where they have a display of the artifacts that were recovered from the site. Alongside each display is a note with a description of what is being displayed.
After going through the museum, you walk up a short distance to the actual ruin where you get a breathtaking view of the buildings from as far back as 15AD. It is an amazing site and gives you a window into how these really smart people lived and prospered off the land. It is a place you must visit when you are in El Salvador.

This is a small yet highly interesting site. Despite the heat it was very comfortable to visit even for our 5-mo baby. The museum area is well thought out and informative (info in English, Spanish and French). The structures have numerous info boards and can be visited at leisure as they are enclosed in shaded areas. There are also good rest room facilities onsite. This site, although small, is well worth a visit if you are in the area as it is unlike any other sites we have visited in Mesoamerica (and we have been to a lot!).

This is a beautiful site to go see the active work going on. It's not very large, but there is a good amount of information about what they know if the people and the area. I don't know if I'll go again in the future, just because of the distance to get there from in the city of San Salvador, but it was worth going once.

Joya de Cerén is also known as the Pompeii of Latin America. It is treasure for the locals and the world. Getting to this site is not as friendly as other sites that I have visited in other countries. They have a small exhibit with artifacts. The actual structures are well protected with permanent roof. I liked this very much as it was a hot day and walking thru the shade made it more tolerable. Then we walked through the garden which has beautiful flowering bushes and fruit trees. Wished they had a gift shop. Always leave with souvenirs but maybe there will be one in the future. awesome place 🤙😎

Very interesting, though we understand from our tour guide access is more limited than in the past. Definitely worth the visit to see how the regular people lived. We also saw many torogoz birds which are stunning and different than the usual.
Very informational and wheelchair accessible. Clean bathrooms. The ruins themselves are housed under 2 huge, open-air pavillions that have wire and fence to keep out large wildlife and conserve the remains. It's a pretty easy walk around the structures. The museum at the enterance is air-conditioned.

We paired this with San Andres and it was a nice morning. The site and museum are small, but interesting and don't take long to go through. Cool perspective on ruins that aren't the larger temples though!

Beautiful and well maintained archeological site. I loved walking through the gardens surrounding the excavations. I was also pleased to learn its the only Mayan archeological site showing regular everyday life, not that of the elite (i.e. Tikal).
However, if you're looking for food nearby younhavr to drive a ways away. There are picnic areas if you bring your own. You don't need more than an hour to visit here. Very clean bathrooms!

Stunning volcanic lake with plenty of activities to do. The problem I found was that most lakefront properties are private. Check a hotel and hire kayaks/equipment and spend the day(s) there. Sunsets at the lake are also really beautiful…

Absolutely beautiful. Great area, jet ski rental boat rides restaurants.

Beautiful lake, stunning really. Just a shame it's full of restaurants full of tourists. Would have been nice to have more area for public access. The road down is narrow and the traffic can get busy.

Well let me start by saying! Holy cow! This place is so underrated and is super beautiful I’ve never seen a lake in my life with turquoise water! Like legit! You guys in El Salvador during May - July check this place out! Their water changes colors for reasons I’ve not found on google lol

Amazing another place to visit while in El Salvador 🇸🇻 Lots of restaurant, you can swim, also some of the restaurants has pools for kids inside the lake, there are boats that take you around the lake or just sit and relax in one of the restaurants.
Mama Guez — Google review
Really fun. The food is really good. Good place to hang out and nice places to stay.
Aiden — Google review
Once in a while color of the lake changes to turquoise blue like the pics below. Take a bus 202 and get off before the bus goes all the way down because the view from a high place is much better. You can find the good view spot if you look for one for a little bit.

Santa Ana Volcano
Volcano
Nature & Parks
The country's highest & most active, this volcano features hiking, scenic views & a crater lake.
Volcán Santa Ana is a relatively easy hike. Foreigners pay $6 entrance fee for the park and $3 for a guide (which is a waste because you really don't need one because there is only one path, but officially you can't go without). I paid the fee, but soon I continued on my own like most do.
At 07:40 I took bus 248 from Santa Ana for $0,70 for a 2 hours drive (the bus crawls up the mountain) which almost everybody does who wants to do this hike. Early afternoon (you can buy food and drinks there) you then take the bus back to Santa Ana, but I had decided to stay on the mountain.
I actually wanted to camp a bit further up (I think it is called Casa Cristobal) from where the bus stops (at 'El Tibet'), but I didn't want to miss the hike, so I arranged a bed/cabaña at 'El Tibet' for $15 so I did not have to carry all my stuff.
By now I know you should just let the group go, start your hike here 13.835353,-89.623097 and if at the park entrance, which is a bit further up, they ask about your guide you just tell them you're happy to pay the $3 but you don't need or want a guide.
My idea was to do both Volcán Santa Ana and volcán de Izalco, but you will need to plan ahead for this, because Izalco is a tough one and the park officially closes already at 16:00. So you either get up very early to see the sunrise on Santa Ana (I found out people do this because I was woken up in the middle of the night by them) and then do the Izalco after it, or do the Izalco and the next morning Santa Ana.

I'm a plus size girl. If I can do it; you can too! It was a 2:15 hike up and only 1:30 back. It's rough. I would wear boots but I did it in tennis shoes. You don't need a guide but you should get one as we did. Elisabeth was phenomenal and patient. Make sure you bring water. You can get a treat at the top for $1. I recommend this hike but try going up at 9am when it's cooler.
Kamilia — Google review
If you want to see an interesting lake and volcanic crater this place is 5 stars unfortunately, on a weekend it is packed with people up and down the trail. It is not a particularly peaceful hike In nature despite the pretty surrounding area and vegetation. The summit has the familiar instagrammers trying to perfect the 'shot' or strolling video with no one in it (it's all a lie [and annoying]). The park also insists on taking a guided walk which just really means someone walks ahead, tells you to wait in certain places and then stops you from going down when you need to catch the bus because of the group! It's a volcanic hike of ~450m altitude and 7.5km round trip so it's not a stroll in the park but it's also not the hardest trail in El Salvador. It would be much better if they allowed people to walk up at their own pace - its an easy trail to follow - and expanded it to the surrounding area.
We went from Santa Ana on the direct 209 bus (Sunday) which leaves at 7.30(ish). The 1pm bus back actually left at 1.20pm so plenty of time to get up and back in a morning.

This was a strenuous hike. Well worth it for the views. Our guides name was Emerson. Very nice young man and he did a great job. I recommend having lunch at the Casa 1800.

I've been there 7 times, but this was my first time witnessing the sunrise. It was worth every single step. Totally different hike than I f you do during the day. It's cold and also very dark.
Saira Giron — Google review
Stunning Turquoise lake in crater, beautiful volcano. It has a very easy hike of 1:30 min up and about 45 min down.
It costs 9$ for guide and entrance fee. And guide is mandatory.
It's about 8 km hike up and down in total.
Perfect and beautiful volcano.
Zahra Baghestani — Google review
Ok, since we looks everywhere to have the right information, here’s the last real informations to to this hike that we did on February 15th 2022.
MEETING/STARTING HOUR:
9:00AM and I don’t know if there an other later.
PRICE:
Total price we paid is 1+3+2.50+6$ = 12.50$ per person. 3$ for entrance fees for Cerro verde national park + 1$ for the parking (paid at the lower gate and got a receipt) + 2.50$ for a contribution for the explanations by an official guide of the park + 6$ for the entrance of Santa Ana volcano national park.
WHAT TO BRING (in February): Since the elevation is high the sun is hitting, so don’t forget sunscreen and a hat, walk sticks if you want (I don’t use it), sports shoes or boots, shorts (it was perfect for me), a sweater or/and a light jacket, no gloves required, snacks, water.
WEATHER: isn’t because you paid that you’ll have access to the top of the volcano. If for example it’s too windy, they gonna close the access or if there thunder storm as well since the lightning are hitting the top of the volcano.
LEVEL / difficulty:
It’s an medium / hard hike and I would say closer to hard. Note that I’m a good hiker. But still really doable with kids.
DURATION:
Minimum 2 hours to go 30 minutes on the side of the crater and minimum 2 hours to come back.
SAFETY:
I read so many reviews about police officers and guards that you had to pay or something like this. But the police officers are chilling in the parking and they’re mostly a decoration haha actually it’s good because they’re keeping an eye on the cars even we never got scared or harassed or see anyone suspicious, on the parking on during the hike.
EXPLANATIONS:
The official way (that’s also the easiest if you don’t speak Spanish and if you don’t wanna spend a lot of money on a private guide) is to go to the national park of the volcano Cerro Verde for 8:30 - 9:00am.
There’s clean toilets and more important, few little shops to have fruits, water, coffee, etc on the parking lot for cheap (I got a coffee, fried plantains, 6 bananas and paid 3.50$).
While waiting (or after the hike), you can go see the Izalco volcano from the mirador (point of view) since the volcano is right beside.
Then AT 9:00AM there’s an official guide from the park that meet us at the entrance of the parking lot (at the actual upper gate of the upper parking: the second gate). We were approximately 14 persons. We left around 9:10, we stop at like 100m at the gate where the path start to have the explanations from the guide. This entrance door is locked, so no access when no guide.
TYPE OF HIKE:
We started walking with the official guide and went down the Cerro Verde for 40 minutes in a nice path 1.5 m large with some wooden tree tronc steps.
Then we walked for 10 minutes on a kinda flat road half paved between the base of the cerro verde and the base of the Santa Ana volcano.
Then we arrived at the entrance of “Paintball GO! Xtreme” where our guide gave few cents (for sure less than 1.50$) to the guy at the paintball field fence.
We wondered if we would have been able to park there (by Savin hike time and money for the first park) by just paying this guy but we still don’t know if he would agreed…?
Then we took a path on the right after this fence and walked for 15 minutes and arrived to the office of the entrance of the park of Volcano Santa Ana where we paid 6$ and they asked our nationality. There’s toilets there and some stuff to buy as snacks and shirts.
Then we started the REAL HIKE of the volcano! It was steeper but a nice path in the forest with some rocks steps. The last 30 minutes was in a rocky desert environment but with an amazing 270 degrees view. We crossed 2 guards and they just asked and write down our nationality.
Then we spent 30 minutes at the top to take pictures. There’s selling ice-cream at the top if you’re into it! And I asked the guide if I was allowed to come back by myself and he said yes if I remember the way, what I did.
We came back in 1:45 (it’s quick) n arrived at the gate at top of cerro verde and the fence was locked but a guy came after 10 min

A unique place! Amazing volcano and crater at the top. Beautiful views of the surroundings. A short and pleasant walk to the top. It is worth taking comfortable shoes with you. It's definitely worth it!
Patryk Zieli?ski — Google review
This volcano hike is a MUST SEE! The hike is moderately difficult but totally worth it and doable. Be prepared with proper hiking shoes and be careful on your way down! There are a lot of rocks and it’s easy to slip/step on a loose rock.
Felicia Rubio — Google review
No words! Amazing place. We used Cerro Verde as the starting point. They have parking, food, and the guide. I think we spent around $9 (parking, guide and the volcano fee) plus the tip
Paola — Google review
Tough hike! The hardest part is going down because the rocks aren’t that stable and you might step on a loose one. Really easy to roll an ankle and have to limp the rest of the way down (speaking from experience lol) but the top is worth it. Very unique looking. Be careful as there are no guardrails
Fiona Umoh — Google review
Beautiful varied hike to the top of El Salvadors highest volcano.
The parking costs 3$. Nearby they offer the tours to the top. You can just visit the site with a guide.
You can book a private tour (35$) with your own guide anytime or join the frequently regular public tours.
For the public tour they charge 3$ for the guidance and another 3$ (locals) or 6$ (foreigners) for the national park.
The tours start between 7-11am. A tour starts when a minimum of 15 guests are ready to go.
When we arrived there were a few people waiting and we decided to wait a little longer because the tourist bus was about to arrive.
Finally we were around 40 people, anyway they did not split the group and started with 2 guides but kept all of us together. It did not felt very comfortable to hike in this big group. We recommend to pay more for the private tour or make sure that you enter a smaller group.
Besides that the tour is great. Be sure to bring good shoes. It’s not the most easy hike but with an moderate shape you will be able to reach the top in around an hour with a few stops at different viewpoints. Take some change with you for the surprise at the summit!
Stefan Bründlinger — Google review
Took longer than expected to arrive to top but view was worth it! Great experience.

We went pass the main trail few minutes more on a scooter based on review on TripAdvisor and hiked up by ourselves. Steep hard hike took us 2.5 hours you can do it probably in 2 if you don't go in the middle of the day. Back down 1 hour. There was no one else. When we got back two guys were standing by the scooter and said that it is private trail through private property. We managed to get away.

Great walk, in the weekends very crowded. Its not realy necesary to pay the park intrance and you dont realy need a guid, you cant mis out the trail is up and down one road. Drive to paintball go at the junction pay the guy with the tickets and walk to the right.

I'll never travel to Antigua without this trip planner again
The Catedral de Nuestra Señora Santa Ana is a renowned cathedral known for its opulent Gothic Revival style of architecture and rich historical significance. Built in 1575-1576, the original structure was destroyed by lightning in the 19th century and subsequently rebuilt. The cathedral showcases the unique and intricate construction techniques used during that era. Its historic interior adds to its charm, making it an impressive landmark worthy of a visit when exploring El Salvador's tourist attractions.
Historical cathedral. Next to it, you can find lots of small shops that makes sandwiches and in front of it, there is people that sells ice cream. It's next to the big park as well.
Ozgur Rugzo — Google review
This is located near a small park it is a great location. You will find a lot of small pop up shops and several areas to purchase souvenirs and places to eat. There are bands and karaoke at the park on the weekends and sometimes throughout the week depending on if there is an event,

Cathedral of Santa Ana one of the Gothic Revival architecture never done which was built between 1575 and 1576, being destroyed by lightning in the 19th century and was rebuild it's a place with a lot history & also show us the way cathedral were build.

The cathedral is nice but do not go to Santa Ana if you only want to visit the Cathedral.
Santa Ana is a great place to be if you want to visit the places around it. The city itself is a bit dirty and there are no restaurants (except for Pupuserias) available.

Super beautiful church right on the main square in Santa Ana. Free to visit and walk inside.
There’s also the lesser known option to go up to the roof and see views of the whole city. $3 for extranjeros $2 for nationals. You just need to call 2447-3303 (same day is okay) to schedule it. You can also ask the worker at the souvenir stand in the church to call if you don’t have minutes.
Alex — Google review
Definitely do the rooftop tour right before sunset. It costs 2 USD per person. Highly recommend!!
When visiting Juayua, make sure to include a trip to the stunning Los Chorros de la Calera waterfalls. These beautiful falls are perfect for swimming and exploring with the help of a local guide. The area is well-preserved and clean, thanks to restrictions on public access without guides. Hiking to the waterfalls can be intense but rewarding, offering breathtaking views and opportunities for a refreshing swim in crystal-clear waters.
You must come and check this place out. It is the most beautiful place I been too. We were not expecting on coming here but I got to say I don't regret getting in with clothes. Check it out

The water fall is very nice, view is beautiful and you will enjoy the swim. You will need to hike a bit, up and down a few hills 4/10. and the road is very, very dusty! The price per person is very high at $10pp. It's not a long trip.
Nelson Marinero — Google review
Went independent of a tour without a guide and was turned around just feet before arriving at the falls. Apparently it's private property and everyone needs a guide. So we never got to see the falls. Very disappointing considering all the official signs guiding us to the falls and no mention of private property. I'm sure they're beautiful but I may never know.

Nice waterfalls. A bit tricky to get to, since it has recently been converted to a hydro electric plant. You need to drive on the unpaved road where you will find a guide who can open the gates for you and guide you to the waterfall.

We scootered to the waterfall. The road forked and up the hill was a local place offering scooter parking and guide to get to the waterfall. We paid $17 for 2 people, 2 scooters. Absolutely gorgeous and so nice to swim in -- would highly recommend tagging this on after the 7 cascadas. There are guides in Juayua who will take you to the 7 cascadas and los chorros for $10 USD per person. You have to either drive to the entrance or take a tuktuk, and it's about a 15 min walk to the entrance. You cannot get in without a local guide as they were closed to the public to prevent damage to the environment and littering. Which is good news because the chorros are super clean! Las 7 cascadas are filled with trash but are still absolutely worth the visit too.

Tortugario Monterrico, also known as CECON, is a sanctuary where turtle eggs are protected and baby turtles are released into the ocean. Visitors can also enjoy H2Olas, a waterpark on-site. From September to January, visitors can participate in the daily baby turtle release before sunset by donating Q10. This experience is both meaningful and educational, offering insight into sea turtle conservation efforts.
Between September to January, everyone visiting Monterrico should participate the baby turtle release here. Every day around 1730 before sunset, donate Q10 and your could get a baby turtle to release back to the ocean. A very meaningful and educational way to learn how to protect the sea turtle.

It’s a college funded place that’s doing great things for the wildlife, unfortunately it’s really underfunded and it shows. The place needs a lot of work, and it’s falling apart.
There’s a turtle release every day at 5pm all through the end of the year.
If you come with the mentality of showing support by coming here you won’t be disappointed.
Cristina Valenzuela — Google review
They did not have any turtles to release when we went (des 2022). Go to Fundaselva which is close by, and much better, and you can get super close. This place is also less well maintained. They have a "zoo" across the road, where they have open air pens with iguanas, crocodiles, and turtles. We only paid the entrance as the funds are going to charity, as the "zoo" was not all that great. Perhaps at other times this vcan be a better experience.

Great place for families and overnight camping. It was cold and windy when we stayed, but we stayed in the lower parking area and it was fine in our roof top tent. The higher part, which we originally we're camping at was so windy it felt like the tent was going to rip off the car and fly away, with us in it. It was like being on an airplane and experiencing turbulence the entire flight, except the wind was really loud. Quiet at night for the most part, but you are right off the main highway. Lots of parking for bigger rigs too if you're overlanding like us. They have hot showers, but turn off the power at 4pm when the restaurant closes, you can ask them to turn it back on if you want to use the showers. Bathrooms are clean, grounds are well kept. Sheep and guinea hens abound on the property. Restaurant serves good food and you have access to the whole park for 60Q if camping. If only going for day use it's cheaper. Zip lining costs extra at 100Q per person. They also have cabins for rent, bit I don't know how much they cost.

Driving safari: so much fun. The landscape is awesome and the variety of animals is nice. Where else can you drive through the same pool where the hippos are!?
Walking zoo: lots of animals but this is the one part that gives the 4/5 stars. The enclosures are too small for the poor animals.
Swimming pool: it was so crowded on a Sunday afternoon that we didn't even get it. It was extremely hot but there was just too many people!

Sailfish at Big Buoy Fishing
Enjoying the best fishing experience of the world is in the Pacific Ocean of Guatemala.
Guatemalan Pacific Coast offers many attractive places to national and foreign tourists, and it is also considered as one of the best places for fishing due to the concentration of fish banks.
Sailfish is one of the most popular in the world-wide popular fishing sport (capture-free) that has been practiced in Guatemala for many years.
To professionals and amateurs, fishing is a fascinating adventure of high intensity. One of the centers where this sport is practiced is Pez Vela Marina, in Big Buoy Fishing, place from which you can live the adventure in a 30 feet catamaran.
Capitain Eric Goetz, an expert fisherman
Capitain Eric Goetz lives the passion for fishing since he was a kid and now he has over 20 years of experience in professional fishing. He, along with his team, has refined the best techniques to fish in the open ocean.
This sportsman is an expert in his field. He came to Guatemala two years ago due to the special characteristics of the country regarding the fishing conditions this country offers. He decided to settle in Guatemala, where, he states, “ The best fishing of sailfish in the world takes place”.
Big Buoy Villa, a resort with all the attractives for a demanding tourist, is located a few minutes away from Pez Vela Marina.

Pacaya Volcano, an active 8,373-foot summit in the vicinity of Antigua, offers guided hikes with stunning valley views. Acatenengo is a more challenging option for overnight hikers seeking a more rewarding experience with closer views of nearby active volcano, Fuego. Pacaya also allows visitors to gaze into its crater and enjoy panoramic views of the valley and city below during a picnic lunch at 8,300 feet.
Relatively easy 60 min hike up if you’re fit. Sunset views are amazing and the marshmallow roasting is a nice touch.
Careful on the volcanic gravel, easy to lose your footing.
Vijay Murali — Google review
A relatively easier option re hiking to get close to hot water vapor coming out of the ground. Definitely No View of the lava. The approx 60 min hike is steep and mostly on soft powder lava dust, hence it is a harder walk. Of course you are climbing in altitude, which will also feel harder. Along the way you have nice views of mountains and the other two volcanoes. As the sun sets, you'll have wonderful colors all around. At the stop up top, there are a couple of guys who will bake you a pizza using thermal energy from the ground - cheesy, but cool. (We had a very poor experience using Old Town Outfitters Adventure Guatemala for Pacaya hike. Please consider not using them.)

A very scenic and historic hike!! I rode on horseback which was even better. We saw lava flows only 3 years old and ate pizza that was cooked on the hot lava rocks too.

This amazing hike and experience is NOT to be missed! Our friendly & knowledgeable guide, Kevin - did a fantastic job shepherding us up & back. Horses are available to ride if the incline and altitude become too much. Be sure to get a pizza cooked on the hot lava rock by David & crew. It's delish!! 😋

The place and the experience of visiting a volcano were fabulous. The place has hundreds of guides who will offer you the service as soon as you arrive, so you won't lack guidance. In the same way, the path is very intuitive to be able to take it without a guide, however I recommend hiring the service because they are in charge of giving you many curious facts about the place.

That's a nice memory. The hike up was a bit difficult because my group walked quite fast, but the way down was super easy and fun, as you can run downwards in the ash. The volcano was a bit active that day but nothing extraordinary. Also that day was pretty cloudy so the view wasn't outstanding. Nobody's fault of course so it still deserves 5 star rating.

Alex Bravo — Google review
Great experience climbing a Volcano with amazing views. There are a few existing hot patches that give off steam that can be accessed by general visitors. Visitors are not allowed to the summit due to poisonous gas and collapsing ground. Only experts. There are horses available to ride up the trail for 200 up or 300 Quetzal return. If you are of reasonable fitness, you will be fine to walk. I think it was about 3-4km return. The guides try to lure you into taking a horse half way up by saying we are only 20% completed when we are actually half way up, even more. I didn't think it got steeper as we progressed either. We left Antigua at 6am. Got back around 12:15pm. A great day trip if you can only spare a day to visit a Volcano.

250Q for the tour guide, 100q for foreign park visitors, 50q for sand boarding, 300q+ for a lava pizza. Best option for a volcano 🌋 hike if you're short on time. Easy 4hr round-trip hike with multiple stops for photos. Weather plays a huge factor on what you see. Wear sturdy boots bring the camera. It's about 1.5hrs from Guatemala City

The Pasaje Estilo shopping mall in Cayalá, a small town in Colombia's Caribbean coast, is a popular tourist destination with European-style architecture and shops. If you're looking for a safe area to stay in Guatemala City, Zona Viva (also known as Zone 10) is a good option. It's advisable to confirm with locals before exploring the area at night, but overall it has a reputation for safety. To get around the city, using Uber can be an efficient and reliable choice.

I'll never travel to Antigua without this trip planner again
The La Aurora Zoo is a beautiful and well-maintained zoo in Guatemala City that features a great variety of native and exotic animals. The zoo is especially interesting for children, as it includes exhibits with activities such as animal demonstrations and games.
Surprisingly, the zoo is very well taken care of and has Disney World level. Among all zoos in the Americas that I visited, the ones in the USA sometimes are in the same level of the Zoo in Guatemala City. Congrats Guatemala, for having this precious place available for your population and for visitors to see!

Wow is 2022 and the zoo looks amazing. It was nice but now is wow! The price is more than Worthy Q40 adult. Has a lot of new aninals amd has been renovates, a lot of new designs and parking under roof. I love it. I give a 100%

Such a fun zoo! Great large and well kept animal enclosures and a huge variety of animals. We were so impressed by how well done the entire zoo was - landscaping, enclosures, variety, theming, it was all very nice.
The one thing that keeps it from 5 stars is the crowds. There are a lot of people who go. Whether it's school groups or tourists or locals there was just a lot of people, but it's understandable why everyone goes because it's so fun and a bargain of a deal to go. Don't miss the chance if you are in Guatemala city.

I've visited Zoos in Hawai'i, Chile, Costa Rica, and parts of the US. This one in Guatemala is better than all of them, really. It's well kept, has a wide variety of species, a playground for the kids to run around, and even a food court. Best part? The entry fee is less than USD$6. A must go if you're visiting Guatemala City.

The zoo is beautiful and very much up to standard with other zoos I have visited in the USA. The only thing I wish they had more of is concession stands, I suggest you bring your own water and a few snacks to keep hydrated because there are few options throughout the zoo.

awesome.zoo. Exotic animals that I have even found hard to find in US Zoos. Rhinos so close..."Black Panther" was very active... The mix of the elephants and the gazelles I think they were was so safari like...Peacocks just walking around free at the establishment was fun, but my fave was seeing the baby hippo with the adult hippo and the Lizard just walking up to them.. Really great zoo...They even had a playground for the kids.

5ta calle Interior Finca La Aurora Z 13 Ciudad de Guatemala, 01013, Guatemala
The Metropolitan Cathedral is a large neoclassical landmark in the center of Guatemala City. The building was completed in 1868 after 86 years of construction, and features grand stone floors, colonial paintings, and gold splashes on the altars. The cathedral is earthquake-resistant and well known for its opulent interior.
Beautiful. I didn't go inside but once you pass by, especially with the dramatic lights at night, you will be in awe. It puts the palace next to it to shame honestly lol

One of the most beautiful Cathedral's located in central metropolitan Guatemala City.
Completed in 1871 and considered to officially be the main Cathedral of Guatemala City.
It is located in Central Park near the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura and other historic landmarks.
I had a good time walking around the park and taking pictures of the Cathedral's beautiful architecture.

The Cathedral of Guatemala City is the Archdiocese of Guatemala. It is officially called the Holy Church Cathedral Metropolitan Basilica of Santiago de Guatemala. The construction of the building began in 1783. The cathedral is located in the Central Park Area. Visitors can come inside and enjoy its many places to sit, including the main church, a few chapels, and small individual areas dedicated to different saints/ historic events. The building has a number of works of art and religious carvings. A large marble alter with four large marble columns is located pass the main seating area. The architectural style of the building includes baroque and classical styles since the work on the cathedral continued during different times as part of the cathedral were gradually added. It suffered from both earthquakes in 2017 and 1976 and was reconstructed over time. Today this damage is hardly visible. The entrance is FREE and it is commonly well attended between masses. It is a nice visit which could take depending on how much time visitors are willing to spend and is highly recommended.

This beautiful cathedral is a lot different… located at the hear of the city is a beautiful peaceful place to live your faith… it’s not meant for flashy pictures. It’s meant for deep knowledge and experience…
Peace in the middle of a chaotic -positive chaotic- city! Not many tourists have the pleasure to enjoy it…
Next to the National palace (now a museum) and the Mercado central… to purchase those nicely crafted souvenirs!
GuateMaya! A place to visit!

Beautiful building with great stories, if you are religious this Catholic Cathedral is open for everyone and you can go with you family everyday or enjoy the special events they do every Sunday. Located in the Central Park of Guatemala helps it have a better look of the park. Inside you can fine a lot of religious paints and ceramics showing some of the important histories of the Catholic religion.

A beautiful Spanish style cathedral which has been immaculately maintained over the years. Occupies a major portion of a large square where locals typically hang out; worth a visit if in the area.
The Palacio Nacional de la Cultura is a beautiful, ornate building that houses a museum of Guatemalan artwork, culture and history. It is located in the heart of Zona Viva, the vibrant financial district, and is within walking distance of many popular restaurants, bars, shops and corporate offices.
Beautiful palace with interesting history. It’s only possible to visit with a guided tour which was less than an hour long. Worth coming inside when in Guatemala City. The Palacio Nacional de la Cultura is known as Guatemala's City symbol.
The architecture is stunning and the building used to house the President of Guatemala.
Construction was completed in 1943 and it's currently used as a museum. In addition, the government occasionally holds ceremonial events here.

I went just after 10 am on a Friday. According to the check-in I was guest 46 for the day. We waited about 15 minutes before our group started. I heard they have an English tour available but the days/times aren't consistent (based on what I was told by someone who went last week) so I just did the Spanish tour. It's a really pretty place and I'm glad I went.

I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed!
The national palace offers hourly guided tours… they are 100% worth it…

The staff is very helpful and the palace is very nice. It's symmetric in design with two sets of stairs, murals and so on. The central part of the palace is glorious with one set of paintings on one side (pre colonial) and the second set on the other (colonial) with a majestic chandelier in the middle with amazing acoustics.
Only guided tours are allowed and they run on every hour (I think). Some days they don't have English tours at all, same as the day we visited. But the guide was very helpful and still let us be part of the group. We were able to use Google translate in transcription mode and follow along without any issues. Foreigners need to carry the passport as well.
On the outside, there's a big park with hundreds of pigeons who you can feed by purchasing small packs of their food (2-5 GTQ per packet). It's amazing to see how the pigeons flock around you once you start throwing food around you. Probably one of the best parts of our visit.
Narender Gupta — Google review
I was really surprised by how interesting this palace was! I didn't know it was something we could take a tour of until I saw the signs. You wait until there's a group of 20 before you go in. So if you arrive right after a tour enters, you wait longer than if you're the 20th person to arrive.
The guide spoke great English, but the tour was in Spanish. She said she could say some stuff in English, but I was okay with just Spanish since I was learning. She spoke really clear Spanish and I understood more than half the words! Another foreigner also learning Spanish on the tour said the same. The guide was great and the palace itself was beautiful!

This is a beautiful building. It has elements of ancient Greek and Roman architecture with a few Moorish style sprinkled around. The attention to details is astounding! I didn't think that Guatemala had a building like this! Honestly, it's better than the Capitol building in Washington D.C. and can rival many European historical buildings. Be sure to take the tour. The mangrove tour was quite fun. the guides on the boat only spoke Spanish but despite us not speaking Spanish they still tried to explain everything really well. The tour was offered as two hours though and in addition we would go fishing. However, after an hour we were already back, and we didn't do any fishing. So the tour is not as it is offered and that is a pity. In short nice guides but mediocre tour operator.

Lots of fun and does good to the local community—We had a fantastic day out fishing with Rolando!
What a beautiful experience beginning to end.
Juana set us up and we met her and Rolando in the morning before sunrise.
Not only did we catch PLENTY but we did so in front of the majestic shores around el paredón with pristine beaches and volcanoes as our background.
We took some of the catch and had a local lady grill and season it for us for dinner and had Choza Chula distribute the rest in the local community.
Thanks Choza Chula for an all around easy, warm and straight up fantastic experience and a special thanks to Juana for setting us up and the delicious banana bread for snacks !

If you are looking for a tour in El Paredon, it is the place to go. It is a non profit and most of the money goes to the guides or to the community, especially to help with the school and teachers. We did the tortugas tour and really liked it. It is done with respect to the turtles, staying at a certain distance to watch them catch their breath at the surface. Pretty cool and relax experience on the mangrove. They also sell some clothes made locally.
Located in Antigua, Hotel Casa Santo Domingo is a colonial-era convent that has been turned into a luxurious hotel with a cultural museum, outdoor pool and three restaurants. This is the first review I’ve ever left and I wish it gave me the option to leave more than 5 stars. This is not my first time staying here but this hotel is truly immaculate. They run a very tight ship and everyone there is trained to make your experience unforgettable. The 5 star dining experience is unlike anywhere else I’ve traveled. I was observing the details of how they serve and anyone who knows fine dining would see they truly made no mistakes. The hotel grounds themselves are so well kept, clean and beautiful. Not to mention the employees are so kind and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. They make it to where you don’t even want to leave the hotel and explore! Lol. I brought my in-laws to Guatemala and they came home so happy and they are already planning their next trip. Also, the rooms are amazing because they really keep the integrity of what the hotel once was, an old monastery, and at the same time, they have the upgrades to make it comfortable. We had three rooms and each one was unique and beautiful. Thank you Hotel Casa Santo Domingo for a truly unforgettable week!!

Great hotel, environment , history and culture
PROS: Great history, kudos to the designers and architects who beautifully retained the ruins and built a hotel around it. Decent museums on the premise. If you are a history buff, this is your place. Great room service and other service professionals.
CONS: not a great room. We got one of the bad ones. Water leaked from shower two days of the 4 days we stayed. Had to call support at odd hours. Very small patio and not well maintained. The one restaurant on premise has a great ambience, but food is probably average. Handful of items in breakfast buffet is good, but overall slightly average.
Summary: May be a higher 3 star or 4 star.

This is in the top 5 of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever seen, not even just stayed at.
The museum is expansive and the options for food are incredible.
For those who are looking to eat at El Tenedor, definitely make arrangements in advance. This is one of the most popular restaurants in the country and it fills up quickly.
Guests get the opportunity to see sculptures, paintings, grounds, and learn about the history of Guatemalan art. Not only is it a rare and massive collection, but it is stunningly beautiful.
Some rooms have access to the spa amenities which are luxe but obviously extra treatments are pay-as-you-go.
The staff are extremely accommodating and very kind. Most of the staff speak Spanish and English.
Absolutely recommend this spot for your stay in Antigua.

The centrally located Parque Central (Mayor's Square) in Antigua Guatemala is a beautiful, tranquil spot with trees and a central fountain. The square is popular for relaxing and socializing, as well as for nearby vendors and eateries.
Wonderful park, great place to have a meal, people watch, or just soak up the culture. Pros: center of everything! Banks, food, churches - action is right there! Downside is all the buskers, constantly asking you to buy stuff and pushing their little ones to sell things.

Beautiful area good for pictures, to relax as well as buy souvenirs. The fountain in the middle of the park was hilarious to me. There is a beautiful church to one side of the center as well as another historical building to its right. There are a lot of vendors set up by the fountain. Had a friend who was offered coke/meth there so be aware, this is what the local people do to most tourists. Otherwise was a really populated area especially at night and makes for a good walk.

Every weekend there is a large market set up and often great treasures can be found.
The fountain has mermaids on it, a traditional symbol of Antigua as a city.

The Central Park is the heart of Antigua Guatemala. It is a beautiful square surrounded by colonial buildings, including the Cathedral, the Palace of the Captains General, and the Palace of the Archbishop. The park is home to a variety of trees and plants, as well as a fountain and a statue of a Mayan god.
The Central Park is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. It is a great place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere, or to take a stroll and explore the surrounding area. The park is also home to a number of restaurants and cafes, so you can grab a bite to eat or a drink while you're there.
If you're looking for a place to relax, enjoy the outdoors, and learn about Guatemalan history and culture, the Central Park is the perfect place for you.
Here are some tips for visiting the Central Park:
The best time to visit is in the morning or evening, when it is cooler and less crowded.
Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking.
Bring a camera to capture the beauty of the park and its surroundings.
Don't forget to try some of the local food at one of the restaurants or cafes in the park.
I hope you enjoy your visit to the Central Park!

The central park of Antigua is truly the central meeting point for most things. It is a beautiful park with greenery, benches, trash cans and a beautiful fountain in the middle. In the evenings and weekends you will find a lot of local artisans and street vendors selling all kinds of things. Overall, this place is super relaxing. Must see

This is the central meeting area for the locals. There are venders selling local crafts to tourists. There are numerous snack and ice cream vendors.
There are is a historic cathedral one side. There are some government offices, a Wendy’s restaurant, and tourist shops. This is a must do, when Antigua.

Beautiful Antigua square. Sights, sounds, vendors, foods, birds, cobble stone and so much more. History and colors fill the streets. Traditional village people and the new age city folks all come together here.

Great tourist location. Lots of souvenir shops and dining options. Definitely a lot of walking but it's worth it. Not wheelchair friendly or even with crutches. Streets are cobblestone and sidewalks are narrow.

This park features plenty of nice photography shots. The shops around it are awesome, and the historic monuments are a must see. The palace is one of my favorite spots. At night the park has concerts, vendors, street food, street performers etc.

Beautiful, lively center of town where you can find a bench or railing to sit and take a break from walking around. Lots of great photo spots and locals selling souvenirs. Great place to take in all the sounds of the city, and gaze around for the next stop on your wandering day. Across from the cathedral is a block lined with restaurants, cafes, and the large market with anything you could ever need in terms of souvenirs. There is an ATM hall on the same wall as Cafe Barista, and if you walk toward volcán Agua on the same street as the yellow arch, you’ll find another hall of ATM machines very close to Monoloco. Across from Barista is a newer free museum where you can enjoy lots of art and history. This plaza is gorgeous during the day and at night!

We got to see it in daylight and nighttime. Pretty safe to walk around, you pay 1 fee for decal to park. Streets are made of stones, it reminds me of cartagena but better. We had a wheelchair and mostly we could stay on sidewalk. People are extremely nice, very helpful and polite. Whenever we needed help with wheelchair, we had several hands to lift it up. For its super affordable and good. Most of the houses have a corridor and a garden that make them so beautiful. I saw the most beautiful church. Lots of street food, but was warned not to eat.

Central park is very Lively and colorful. Bring cash if you want to buy souvenirs and be prepared to take lots of pictures of the gorgeous indigenous people and their crafts.
Downside: no public restroom.

Beautiful architecture and lots of history. Loved the artisian market. I bought jewelry that I was fully prepared to discover would turn my finger green from not being real, but to my suprise everything i bought at the market hasn't turned at all. Affordable, safe, and not super crowded. The view the the volcano is pretty amazing too!

About a 45 minute drive by private shuttle from the airport, this is the unofficial capital of Latin America. The city of Antigua is stunning in its beauty. It is one of the first and oldest cities in the Americas. This charming city is framed by 3 volcanoes and combines the traditional with the modern. Antigua is safe, highly walkable and full of sights and activities. The service is outstanding and the food is delicious. The local people are friendly and hospitable. The US dollar goes very far here. This gem should definitely be added to your travel bucket list. I know that I will be back here soon.

Really enjoyed this central hub of Antigua. We learned that the Spanish used to set up all their cities the same way, with military on one street, church on one street, government on one street and bakery on the fourth street/side. Really cool to walk through the park with the fountain that connects it all and truly is the heart of Antigua today.

The central park was a pleasant and essential part of our trip to Antigua. It's beautiful and vibrant to the say the least! Amazing stores and vendora with beautiful crafts, street food, coffee. We were lucky to be staying within walking distance of this place so got to enjoy multiple trips to the market. Especially the weekend pop market right in the park area.

We loved spending time in Antigua. We enjoyed walking the cobblestone roads and taking in the beautiful colonial architecture. The restaurants are charming and unique. Prices for food, lodging and gifts are very reasonable. We stayed at the Hotel Soleil. The grounds are beautiful and the service is first rate. We got around using Uber and tuk-tuk's (when we felt more adventurous).
ChocoMuseo is a museum that specializes in cacao. It has a lot of information about the history and production of chocolate. It's also the place where you can buy some delicious chocolate.
Salome gave us a tour and taught us A LOT about cacao. We got to make our own chocolate bars. They also sale ice cream which was tasty.
They were able to set us up with the tour/class when we walked up but I recommend scheduling it before hand just to make sure.

We did a 1 hour chocolate making tour which was great. It was not really “chocolate making class” but more like getting information about cocoa beans and the process in general. Our guide had a very friendly and fun attitude, unfortunately, because of her mask and noise in the cafe it was hard to hear her.
We were able to take home our own chocolates at the end of the class. I’d recommend if you have time & desire to learn more about chocolate making process.

The 1-hour workshop was wonderful! It cost 100Q and was completely worth it. Diana, our guide, was phenomenal. There were a few Spanish speaking guests, so she switched between English and Spanish the entire hour, which was very impressive. It also helped me with my Spanish, which was a bonus! The chocolate bar you get to make was delicious. The information provided was very interesting, and Diana answered all questions eloquently. I highly recommend this workshop to anyone. Please don’t forget to tip your guide!

Where can I start!? The whole experience was amazing from beginning to end. We were greeted warmly with a smile and our guide was able to accommodate the class in English which was super helpful. We were able to learn so much about the history of chocolate in Guatemala, how it’s made and the different ways it was used. All in a light , creative and light environment. Very interactive and everyone in the group joined in and had a great time. It was my partners birthday and they even brought our a piece of cake and we all sang happy birthday. Just a beautiful touch. I would recommend this tour to anyone. It is definitely family friendly and a must do in Antigua

Aww! So glad I stopped here. Cute shop with a variety of chocolate offerings. And they love giving you samples! 🤣 I took the bean to bar workshop and it was excellent! My guide (gosh please forgive me.. Samone? Savored? Sa.. something) was excellent and friendly. I learned so much. Like that white chocolate is not chocolate 😅 and how we got the Nestlé brand! Made our own bars and tried multiple traditional drinks that I got to help prepare! Book your class in person if you can!
They also have a little cafe in the back. Did not eat here but had some good looking pastries and drinks.

It was great getting to make our own bars, learn about how chocolate is made and tasting the beans at different stages and also the different chocolate drinks too. One tip- eat your chocolate quickly as we left ours in our bag whilst we explored Antigua and it melted lol.

I attended the chocolate workshop at ChocoMuseo. It was fantastic. Our host Diana was quite knowledgeable and spoke both in Spanish and English. She made the experience a lot more fun than I initially expected. I think this is an activity for all ages. There were two families, one couple and a few individuals and everyone seemed to enjoy the entire two hours. My chocolate bar didn’t come out so great, as I was a little heavy handed with the sea salt.

The Santa Catalina Arch, an iconic structure situated in Antigua, dates back to the 17th century and is adorned with a clock constructed in the 1800s. It stands as a colorful landmark that once connected two convents: The Convent of the Virgin and The Convent of Santa Catalina.
Stunning, peaceful ambiance on a cobble stone street with amazing boutiques, restaurants, and shops within a 100 meters walk. 74F/23C and moderately humid, the weather is perfect. Although it is a tourist destination it was not overcrowded with tourists. Antigua feels different than anywhere else in Central America. Worth a repeat trip!!

Beautiful location in Antigua, Guatemala. We were able to take great pictures of the famous arch and volcano early before the crowds. Only a couple steps to delicious food, drinks and dancing. Their restaurant food is great, they have music some days. Staff is very accommodating and nice. Only blocks from the Plaza, shopping, ruins.

Antigua is one of my favorite cities in Central America! 😍 The city is located at the foot of the 3750 meter high Agua volcano and is a large open-air museum.
You can stroll around the colonial center for days, marvel at the surrounding volcanoes, visit ruins of former churches, hike to viewpoints, shop in fancy boutique stores and eat in great restaurants. And the surrounding area is also worth exploring with volcano hikes, organic farms and local villages. 💜
I am so excited to be back soon for more reports. In the meantime enjoy the pictures! 📸

Beautiful place, has lots of souvenir shops and you have to get Fridas food which is close by. Best to visit in the morning where there is no people or vendors around. Went here at 0730 and it was pretty empty. The other pictures are late afternoon and are very busy, I was able to witness their traditional stencil art below the arch. Arch is free, best time to see is early morning.

The Santa Catalina Arch is one of the distinguishable landmarks in Antigua Guatemala, it was built in the 17th century, it originally connected the Santa Catalina convent to a school, allowing the cloistered nuns to pass from one building to the other without going out on the street. A clock on top was added in the era of the Central American Federation, in the 1830s. The Guatemala Post Office Building in Guatemala City is based upon the arch.
What a beautiful and preserved landmark.

Beautiful arch in the middle of the town, a few blocks north of the main town square. Busy area on a weekend, might be difficult to get a solo photo unless in the early hours of the morning. Traffic is pretty busy in the area and parking can be difficult, but you can park in the streets or in a parqueo.

One of the signature sites of Anigua, Guatemala, this is a must see in this beautiful town.
Sunrise is a particularly beautiful time to get your pictures, with the active volcano in the background, frequently emitting puffs of volcano ash to add to your photo.
Night time pictures are equally beautiful, and the thoughtfully placed lights accent it very well.
If you are in Antigua, Guatemala, this is on your must-see and experience list.

Beautiful place to visit a charming town with amazing historical places to visit.
The Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint offers an unobstructed view of Volcan Agua, one of the most dramatic features of Antigua Guatemala. The hill is marked by a cross erected in the 1930s and provides a panoramic view of the city below with its domes and blue volcanoes.
Great spot to get a good view of the city and take cute pictures! Don't do what we did though: Take the same way back because the paths that look like a trail don't lead to the city. You'll end up in a person's backyard in the woods and it's very awkward to ask them to go through their private property.
Ariane Leclerc — Google review
Well marked, shady trail up the hill. Lots of vendors for water etc at the bottom. Great view from the top on several levels. Busy with families and tourists - good place to go in Antigua

If you’re going in the morning, before the crowds ascend, it’s worth it. The views are wonderful and the tranquility of the morning as the sun rises or to your left is as good as it gets in Antigua. Not sure how it looks when it becomes more crowded, so if you like a peaceful tourist destination, go early.
The hike up is easy. A quick ten minutes straight up hill and you’re there.

(Dec 2022) There's construction going on at the moment, likely for months, hence it is hard to see a proper view of the city. Even if you did, it is unclear if it is worth a hike up on a hot day. There is so much you could do in the city that is far more worth it (even if you randomly walk around trying local street fare!). If you keep going up a bit more, you get to the statue of an old Spanish general. Lots of locals sitting around, and enjoying fruit and ice cream. If you have nothing g else to do, checkout Hill of the Cross.

Amazing view of the city of Antigua and peaceful in the morning. Great hike and it’s best to go early if you can. Wear proper hiking shoes and don’t forget to bring bottled water and a rag. I got to the top of the hill around 7:30am. The only other people there were the park cleaning staff. The hours of Cerro de la Cruz are 7am-6pm and it’s free to enter. I went on a Wednesday morning, but I imagine it gets very busy and much hotter in the afternoon.

Going back after 4 years away, I was blown away by how different it is. Completely reconstructed to include some more accessible routes down to the cross (maybe intended for wheel chairs, but it’s still pretty steep). The patio below the cross is nice and has a map showing what you see in front of you. Tiendas line the path down to the paved area now and there are so many groomed garden/landscaping areas with lavender and other plants. It seems they’re doing some work to help with the rain water when it storms (I was told with heavy rain there isn’t a great route for muddy water yet). Overall, the adaptations are amazing and this continues to be a staple of things to do in antigua!

You can get here by walking from the central park about 15 minutes walking. Then there are some stairs to get to the top, about 5 minutes walking. The view is amazing, you can see the volcanoes and the whole city from there. If you want to work out in the morning, this is a good option.

We went during the day in March and this was an enjoyable, easy climb up with rewarding views of the surrounding area. Regarding the safety of the area, I cannot speak for prior to sunrise and after sunset, but going in the day is safe. There is police presence and plenty of other people climbing it. I did hear from a local to watch out for pickpocketers, particularly children, but I did not personally see or hear of any event; just something to keep in mind.

What a beautiful view of the city. I visited this site in 2018 before the remodel. The site is a must see when you’re in Guatemala. Amazing place to walk to or to drive to. 10 min walk but you can drive up. You have to pay for parking and bathrooms. But, know that around 5 they close all the bathrooms. Sometimes before. La Merced, a striking yellow building with white plaster filigree on its facade, is one of the most beautiful churches in Guatemala. The church is used only for religious ceremonies, such as processions where candles are lit and firecrackers go off. It was built to withstand earthquakes three centuries ago and still looks in good condition.
Beautiful church the outside is gorgeous, Baroque style, rebuild during 1749 and 1767.Amazing pictures opportunity. Paking in lot in front ruins a bit the whole view, but sometimes early morning is a chance of less cars there. Some days you can go up the roof for 10Q I believe only weekends and the view is amazing and picture opportunity is great.Right in the center and a lot of business around to visit if you have the time

This church is quite popular with locals and tourists alike. It is quite picturesque with its vibrant yellow façade and white details. Honestly though, other than the few hints of native vegetation featured on its front , it does not stand out from many colonial churches that litter Mexico and South America. The towers are quite squat and bulky (I get it, the earthquakes) and the façade looks like dozens of others , unless you really pay attention to the details. I visited during the semana santa and I was not allowed to venture inside, by an angry looking Guatemalan man.

Reviewers describe mostly the facade or the church and the interior. Sure, it's beautiful and looks even better in pictures. However, for Q.20 (locals just 10) you may take a look at the backyard. It's quite an experience. The entrance is on the left from the main entrance to the church. You may or may not be lucky to see all - I was.

A beautiful church located in the center of Antigua. A must visit when in town. Later in the afternoon, around two o'clock, vendors sell local foods at reasonable prices.

The front facade is simply spectacular. The yellow is bright, and the white accents are near perfect. Perhaps a great contrast to other churches that have not been rebuilt. Inside, the church looks older, as behooves it's age. Look up to see some amazing mosaics of saints, and the altar for sure is beautiful. There is a calm inside the church that is to be appreciated, especially in contrast to the hustle and bustle outside. (It is hard to forget that this is a monument to subjugation of the local Mayan culture, the actions of the Spanish are not gone... They are felt in the poverty and challenges faced by the Mayan descendants until today.)

On the Parque Central’s east side is the Cathedral of Saint James San José Parish. Construction began in 1545 with rubble brought from Guatemala’s previous capital, but it was hampered by frequent earthquakes. A second sanctuary was inaugurated in 1680 and the church obtained its cathedral status in 1743.
The interior is stunning and well worth a visit.
The park area is often filled with vendors selling food and wares.
