Cerro Negro is an active volcano in Leon that offers moderate to challenging hikes and a unique activity known as volcano boarding. This involves sitting on a board and sliding down the summit of the volcano after climbing it on foot. Other activities in Leon include sandboarding, surfing at Poneloya, or visiting the Natural Reserve of the Islands Juan Venado for those seeking more extreme adventures.
The youngest active volcano in Central America! I'm glad to have experienced volcano boarding here, it was exhilarating! Went here with a local guide, who is an independent contractor with a group tour that I booked. It's great that we went early in the morning so we had the whole volcano to ourselves and avoided the scorching sun. The hike up to the peak is about 45 mins, rewarding you with cool breeze and amazing view. Descending down the slope with the board takes a few seconds to few minutes. An experience of a lifetime that is worth doing again! :)

Beautiful volcano, red iron, white manganese and yellow sulfur deposits. The hike is a medium difficultly up. Heavy winds and can take an hour. The actual boarding itself is 300 meters up and takes less than a minute to get down.
When I went down it was like two hills. The first was slow and meh but the second was more inclined and I ended up toppling over. All good though. Tours can be $25-30 and require minimum of 2 people. I went with "Via a Via." A guy took pictures the whole time because it's hard to record as you're going down. It also included free pickup from hotel, free shirt, and free drink. I even bought a bandana for 70Lempiras or $2USD. You must bring a bandana!
Other than that. Have fun and enjoy the adrenaline.

The trek up is not difficult and took more than half an hour. Great view at the top of the volcano. Extremely windy at the top. Waiting for sunset was the icing on the cake. Beautiful panoramic view. Going down the volcano was a totally new experience, it took about 10-15 minutes to glide down the moving, sliding volcanic pebbles. It was not easy and some really enjoyed the descent

Was beautiful out there, though we thought the slide would be more extreme:)

A few of us went volcano boarding a few years ago, and even if had just gone for the hike and views, it would have been spectacular. Boarding itself was great fun, but make sure you cover up as much skin as you can... and bring water!

Don’t miss this adventure! We had a great time enjoying the beautiful views! The hike up is fairly easy and takes about +/- 30 minutes. Coming down is much quicker;)
Nelson and Megan Garcete — Google review
It is worth the drive to head up to and to check out. We had a guide to help us go up to the volcano. It’s a scary experience, because the higher you go, the windier it gets, and the trail gets alittle steep, but one you are on top of the volcano it’s all good.
I did not realize it was still active (I’m ignorant...);because some steam was coming out from the volcano, and it felt hot too.
Once on top you get a great view all around Nicaragua. And we got to watch the sunset, and sled down afterwards!
Great experience!
Jay H — Google review
Volcano boarding is of course the main reason people come and I did it too but volcano itself is much more attractive than volcano boarding. Hiking up isn't hard even with the board. On the top, the view is amazing and you can feel the heat if you touch the surface. Try to dig just a little bit. You can see steam coming out of it.
León Viejo is a historical site in Nicaragua that features the remnants of a 1500s Spanish colonial city that was destroyed by volcanic eruptions. Visitors can book tours to explore the ruins and learn about the history of the old city through well-marked plaques in both English and Spanish. In addition, there are three small museums on site which are included in the entrance fee of $5 for foreign tourists.
Amazing place if you are even a little bit interested in history, it is a fairly new excavation as it was only rediscovered in 1967 (there are still new excavations taking place).
The $5 (180c) entrance fee also includes a guide that shows you around and explains all of the ruins. All of the signs are written in spanish, our guide was incredible and really nice and she also tried her best in English as we spoke very little spanish and she had no problem using our translator to help us out a bit. Highly recommend.

Interesting ruins of the Spanish capital of the province of Nicaragua. Well marked with Spanish and English plaques explaining everything. Also 3 small museums on site included in the entrance fee. $5 for foreign tourists.

Very interesting stop. It was out of the way of many other tourist stops but definitely worth the detour. Our tour guide was very informative and eager to tell us the story of the ruins (note that she only spoke Spanish, so if you don't speak Spanish you might not get as much from the tour). There was a small museum that we viewed before going to see the ruins. The tour took about 75 minutes. Definitely recommend!

Puerto Salvador Allende is a picturesque avenue adjacent to a lakefront that culminates at the eponymous pier. The thoroughfare features various dining establishments and watering holes along its length, making it an ideal spot for tourists and locals alike.
The Santiago of Managua Cathedral, built in 1920 by a Belgian architect, is a neoclassical structure that suffered damage from an earthquake in 1972. Currently undergoing restoration, the exterior facade features stone angels and radiates golden light while the interior remains off-limits and empty. The cathedral is considered a poignant symbol of the city's lack of centralized focus.
Very old and historic church. Built on a tectonic plate so it will not be restored. Cool site to visit while in Managua.

It is a beautiful cathedral, but falling apart and appears to be long ignored. It’s blocked off on some sides so you cannot see it, such as the angle from the National Palace.

Old dilapidated church that has not been touched for decades. All restorations have been limited to the outside and surrounding area as church is now to weak from several earthquakes and shellings during the war. More of a symbol of Managua you can see rather than experience. You can only see a glimpse of the inside.

It's OK to look at from the outside but it is very damaged and you can't go inside. I believe they have not fixed it since it was damaged in the earthquake in the early seventies. I wish they would fix it up and make it look really nice so tourists can see the beauty of the old cathedral in downtown Managua

Museo Volcán Masaya
Museum
Natural History Museums
Many people avoid the museum Museo Volcán Masaya due to poor signage or their rush to reach the nearby volcano. However, it is recommended to visit the museum before heading to the volcano, as it provides a comprehensive overview of the area and its landmarks. Spending around 10-15 minutes browsing through its exhibits can give visitors a clear understanding of what they will encounter at the volcano site.
What experience!!! Soo cool, watch the sunset, and look at Magma!!! We went at 4 perfect timing before all the crazy line up! 10usd to enter after 430 for the sunset. And night visuals of the volcano Masaya.
I'm going to tell you, get there at 4pm with your rental car, wait in line until 430 open pay the 10usd per person my daughter who was 6 was free. Hit it up the Museum get the information about the Giant volcano, last huge major eruption I think he said 3,000 years ago, and last lava flow was 1970's.There is a "bat" cave inside the museum with real bats!! Back in 1550's the Spaniards came put up a cross thinking it was the gates to hell.
The aboriginals, prior to that thought, there was a magic Hag who used to live there and told the tribes to sacrifice their maidens and children (of course)
Such a cool experience for our family!
A must see place!!!

Toilets here and good parking. Small shop across the road for refreshments.

Spectacular sight. Also nice to do the walk to the other volcano next to it.
Petr Vasicek — Google review
Lot of people skip the museum either because it is not marked very well or they are rushing to the volcano. It should be visited before the volcano as it gives a great overview of the area and the relative position of everything i.e. what you would be seeing up there. Spend 10-15 minutes browsing to get a good idea.
Dureska — Google review
Really good visitors center, and amazing to see an actual smoking volcano crater. The early evening visit would also allow you to see the lava, which you miss in the day time

this was very nice experience for the all fam.. one of thing that made this volcano unique is the easy access in vehicle to his crater. very dirent from other including the ones that we visit in Hawaii we need to in helicopter.
and 2nd thing in volacan masaya price was reasonable compare to the ones in Hawaii.
The Masaya Volcano National Park is a popular destination with active volcanoes, craters, and lava-formed tunnels. This park is located in Leon, known for its volcanic features and intellectual reputation due to the presence of museums and art galleries. The park's craters are considered as the gates of hell by Spaniards, with five craters comprising two volcanoes - Masaya and Nindiri. Among them, Crater Santiago remains highly active with red-hot lava bubbling inside.
The Masaya Volcano is an active caldera located in a national park. It has an interior lava lake that stands over 2,000 ft high. A visit to this volcano at night is a must-see experience, as visitors can witness the boiling lava beneath them. Another attraction near Masaya Volcano is the Laguna de Apoyo, which is a volcanic lake filled with warm mineral water.
We'll worth the effort. We used the organised tour from Granada for 20$ but you can get them from 18 to 22$. The views are stunning is the sky is clear and you will see lava once it's dark.
Michael Messenger — Google review
Tips: 1. Focus on the view per se instead of focusing on pushing others for a better view ; 2. Check weather forecast ahead, avoid windy days; 3. No flash photo nor yelling false lava alarm please.

To visit this place you must be on a tour or by car.
I saw information online that you can take a shuttle bus up from the entrance, so I headed there by local bus but could not get in.
However, with the help of kind local people, we were able to visit the site safely. Thank you so much.

While visiting the neighboring country of Costa Rica, we decided to take a tour of the Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua. This was our fist time visiting a live volcano and it was definitely a sight to be seen. It was a great experience even just driving up to it and seeing all the lava rocks. Once we got to the top, it was an impressive view seeing all the lava jumping. Legend has it that this volcano is one of the gate ways to hell and that was a chilling experience in itself. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Rafael Then-Gea — Google review
beautiful accessible experience.
unfortunately i wasn't lucky to see the real beauty of this place since that day it was steamy and time wasn't right, but still I could feel the power and heat, and even see bits of the lava pool down below.
I love to hike, but the best part of this volcano is that it accessible for everyone. Just park right there, at the top, and look in the crater.
There is also a short hike to the top park of you want to see it from a higher point.
Lan Ki — Google review
So this is definitely not worth the 10 dollars entrance you’ve got to pay after 4:30pm. You are not allowed to walk up, so you have to get by car up the road which brings you to a big parking lot. There you can see some lava, but that’s it. You can walk a little bit up to two mirador points, which are not too impressive. Everything -especially during sunset-nightfall- is super crowded. Most of the impressive pictures are taken with drones/from the air, so don’t expect to see something similar. Only if you really want to see a little bit of lava (if you manage to get a sneak peek between the crowds), and are not looking for a nice walk/hike, you can go. Otherwise would not recommend.
In short: basically it comes down to a very touristy and overpriced sightseeing.
Anton Hoynck Van Papendrecht — Google review
Amazing!! Definitely want to arrive around 5pm, so you can see the lava at sunset, but still arrive early enough to snap a few amazing photos!
Walk up the new steps (thank goodness the old ones are closed off now HAHA was way too dangerous before).
Must see!!!

My recent visit to Masya Volcano was truly awe-inspiring. The moment I arrived, I was captivated by the raw beauty and power of the volcano. The knowledgeable guides shared fascinating insights, and witnessing a volcanic eruption was an unforgettable spectacle. Safety measures were top-notch, and the surrounding landscape added to the surreal atmosphere. With excellent facilities and a chance to witness nature's fury firsthand, Masaya Volcano is a must-visit for anyone seeking a remarkable adventure in Nicaragua.

I did not experience everything Masaya had to offer because the park rangers started closing the trails due to lightning. Very well maintained park.

Watching the sunset at Masaya Volcano was a highlight of our 2 week Nicaraguan vacation We arrived around 4:00 pm and spent some time looking at the lava fields on the drive up. We chucked on the volcano and could see a little stream of lava in the central vent. Then we hiked up to to view the city of Managua as well. As the sun was setting we headed back to view the volcano after dark. The view was spectacular. Well worth a trip

Here's what to know: We didn't use a tour guide so we made a couple mistakes.
1. Get there after 430pm if ypu want the night show. They won't sell entrance tickets for a night visit until that time. if you are early, you meet to wait.
2. Don't expect bubbling Lava. It's just a red glow but still pretty neat!
3. Tickets are 10 USD per foreigner
4. Get there before sunset to enjoy some of the other views there are.
5. There are drinks and snacks at the museum but not at the volcano. I forgot to bring water...
6. You won't see much red glow until it's pretty dark outside.
8. It's worth the visit for sure
Baja Guero — Google review
Top tip; don't need a tour!
You can easily drive yourself (if you have a car, no 4x4 needed) or get a taxi. We visited the volcano from Granada and can recommend doing this by sunset.
The premises offer a few hikes but the main attraction is certainly the lava crater.
Maurice ten Hengel — Google review
Great experience and a must visit when you are in Nica.
Pro tip: No tour is needed. You only need a transport to get to the park and to the top. Get a taxi and be there at around 5 p.m. That gives you ca. 1 hour for the info point. The entrance fee is 10 US$ per person at night (5 US$ during the day). There is plenty of info about the volcano on the www, so do some research in advance and you do not need a guide.
It may happen that depending on the volcano activity you will be allowed to spend only 10 minutes on the top - the gases produced are toxic. You can check this prior to your visit.
The best time for watching the lava is after the sun sets, hence there is no need to be the first on top. Ascend to the volcano from the info point after 6:30 p.m.
Johannes Mirtschink — Google review
Amazing volcano with beautiful views. Can almost hike the circumference. There are 2 volcanoes that are walking distance that’s less visited. A must see when you are Mangua.
Nas Sol — Google review
Pretty cool thing to see! The museum is really cool for a shall place. The hike up to the top is worth it. It's secure so even kids can do it safely. Great view. Wish we could have done more of a hike up the nearby mountain but there was extra cost for that (seriously?). They do have a tour to go on horse but didn't come dressed for that.
Iglesia La Merced is a 1534 church in Granada that offers visitors the opportunity to climb up its spiral staircase to the bell tower and enjoy panoramic views. While there are many things to do in Granada, such as admiring colorful buildings and walking along the lakefront, it is suggested that tourists allocate most of their time exploring attractions outside of the city. One must-see activity is visiting Masaya Volcano at night to witness lava boiling beneath them.
If you are in Granada, you should definitely pass by. The church is architecture of the church is amazing. For 1 cordoba, you can go up to the top of the bell tower. Which give amazing views of Granada. (The stairs to go up are very narrow and steep). But once you are at the top, the pictures are great!

It is one of the most beautiful churches in Nicaragua, but the best is the view from its tower, from it you can see the entire colonial center of the city, and I have done it with Pachamama Travel and its Free Walking Tour, it was a success...
Favilli Mansion Lounge, formerly known as Mombacho, is a colonial mansion in Granada that serves as the headquarters of Favilli Cigars. Visitors can witness the entire process of cigar making, from filling to binding to rolling, all done by hand. The tour provides insight into the production and process of creating quality cigars. Guests can enjoy a panoramic view from the rooftop and even roll their own cigar during the visit.
Amazing cigar tour. Great experience and must see while in Granada. Beautiful preserved colonial style building with a lovely layout. Staff were great. Get to roll your own cigar. They have a great selection of top quality cigars.

Fantastic cigar factory in Granada, highly recommend going and rolling your own cigar!
We went to both cigar factories Dona Elba and Mombacho and while Dona Elba is a traditional family business you can see that Mombacho has specialized in high end cigars and this also includes their tour.
The guide Brian did a wonderful job explaining in great English the past of the business and the way tobacco is grown and used for cigars and how you can tell differences.
He took us through the wonderful mansion where the factory is located and my boyfriend and I also rolled our own cigar with the help of the local staff who were super helpful!
Every detail in their production process is ensuring everything is perfect which is great to witness.
I highly recommend going!!
A tour incl your own cigar is 10$ (Dona Elba is 8$) and takes about 1.5h

We had an interesting and unique experience doing a tour here, learning about the production and procees it takes to make a quality cigar. Nuvia gave as a tour around and showed us the entire process and gave us a lot of information about cigar making and about Nicaragua. Also the view from the rooftop is the best view of granada and the surrounding area. After the tour we sat down and had a cigar, with some coffee and rum. Definitely recommend coming here for a nice and elegant afternoon!

Claudio is truly a master, with the mind and spirit of an atelier. It was a gift to experience his passion and joy of cigar making and smoking. With him, Mombacho has a very bright future. The property is beautiful and the cigars were fantastic. Just like their sign says, a "best kept secret."
AABest — Google review
$10 per person for a tour of the entire cigar rolling process, the experience of rolling your own cigar and taking the cigar home as a souvenir! You can’t beat that!
The Mombacho Cigar organization has worked extremely hard for their good name and certification and it shows. They truly care about the customer and making the perfect cigar. Their attention to detail, and their customer service is unmatched!
Our tour guide Brian was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the organization. We truly enjoyed his company, and his insight during our experience at Mombacho! There wasn’t a question that we asked that he couldn’t answer!
Walking around Granada we saw many organizations that would allow you to roll your own cigar, but they do not offer a tour, OR have one of the highest cigar rankings in Nicaragua!
If you are in the Masaya / Granada area, and even if you’re not a smoker (like myself), we HIGHLY recommend this tour!
Karson Wilson — Google review
Great place to learn first steps about how to make cigars while also preparing your first own cigar.
Bryan the tour guide was super nice! His english is really good. He explained everything about Mombacho cigars, the building and factory process.
It takes some time if you want to roll your own cigar but it’s well integrated in the tour. E.g. while the cigars need to be pressed for 20min you continue the tour. The entire tour takes about 90min.

The Guadalupe Church, located on Calle la Calzada near Nicaragua Lake, holds historic significance as it was strategically positioned at the entrance of the town during colonial times. While its original architecture was lost due to a fire, it has since been rebuilt with a new design. The museum tour was cute. Pretty quick and basic, but it was informative and the guide was fun.
The guide is also the salesperson for the gift shop. They offer the tour for free, and ask you to buy stuff. Sounds reasonable, right?
Except that all the cacao and chocolate we bought was the worst cacao and chocolate I have ever tasted. Literally, the worst. All of it was burnt. It's the first time I've tasted burnt cacao and chocolate like this. It's not a good taste, there is no desire to eat any of it. And it wasn't isolated to one item - we bought 4 different items, all of it the same. You can definitely get better cacao/chocolate elsewhere, don't buy it from this gimmicky shop.

The Chocolate museum is a must see if you find yourself in Grenada. The story they tell, from Cacao plant to our plate is incredible, delving into the history and modern day production of Chocolate. There is a guided tour in English or Spanish, and the staff there are cooking chocolate delicacies to be tried by customers. Amazing presentation and great sampling options as well.

Absolutely amazing! Really loved how they walked us through the whole process. My husband and I got to try a little of each of their products and honestly we walked home with quite a few things. Antonio was our Choco King and it wouldn't have been as amazing without him.

I’ve been on a couple of chocolate tours in and out of Nicaragua. I wouldn’t say this was the best, or most interesting one, but it was still enjoyable. The best part was obviously sampling some of the things they had in the grift shop. We absolutely loved their chocolate tea, and their brownies were so good!
We also visit them to go swimming in their pool on hot days. The pool was absolutely filthy, so as a guest I’m not sure how the hotel is. But the chocolate tour was okay. I don’t think I would pay to do it again though.

I visited the Chocolate Museum simply for a chocolate fix, although there are multiple activities one may sign up to do if you wish to actively participate in the process of making chocolate yourself.
I stopped in on a weekday late morning. There was no waiting to be seated to order drinks or desserts.
I ordered a Willy Wonka bowl for $8 that was much larger than I expected.. fruit on bottom; banana, watermelon, and pineapple with chocolate brownie and ice cream on top drizzled with chocolate. Whoa, it was a lot!
The chocolate was delicious, which was mostly all I was interested in eating along with some banana for variety.
We also sampled the chocolate martini (yum) and a chocolate crepe. The crepe was non-traditional and a bit crunchy. The chocolate itself was very good, but it was not the crepe fix we were looking for.
Altogether, I think it's a fun adventure where you will find the chocolate fix you crave and possibly learn a thing or two if you sign up for the full experience.

Free quick tour is useless, guide isn't quite knowledgeable. Seems just memories the script. The chocolate is very poor quality. I could sense sugar pieces under my teeth.

We brought our 3 kids, ages 10,8 and 5 and enjoyed the workshop with Antonio. He did a great job explaining the entire chocolate process from its history to actually making it, which our kids enjoyed! We sampled quite a bit of chocolate as well:)
Definitely a tourist thing to do…but enjoyed it for a day out of the sun and visiting a new city in Nicaragua.

Let me start with how beautiful and amazing this place was! Antonio, our tour guide and one of the talented chocolate makers, showed us every step of the chocolate making process. From learning when the plants are ready to harvest to getting a feel for the work those before us had to put in to make things out of them, it was an experience I recommend to everyone who visits granada. There is so much to do and see, but this place was an absolute masterpiece. Also, they have samples!!! My family, 2 kids, my spouse and I, and his parents really enjoyed all Antonio and the chocolate museum had to offer. I do believe we will be coming back in the future, if only for the chance to say hello again and enjoy their delightful rum. They also had tea, brownies, and different amounts of chocolate in each of the sweets, so you are sure to find something you like. 10/10!

Highly recommend the tasters. It's free with a tip at the end if you enjoy. You learn a lot while getting to sample chocolate rum, brownies, tequila and much more

Museum part is tiny. I didn't go during the free guided one so I just wandered and read. You can walk around the mansion. This is one of 2 chocolate places I found in the area. You can read the info on the posters. There is a nice garden to chill in, I got a traditional drink a Pinolillo. It was interesting, I am glad I tried it but necessarily a repeat drink for me.

Had a chocolate making class with Brandon and bought some chocolate. The class was fun. Brandon was very knowledgeable and energetic. Learned a lot about chocolate. Probably worth $25. I also bought some chocolate which strangely was not very good. The bars were all chrystalized and blooming (cocoa butter separated from the chocolate) I ended up just melting them in some milk for rather expensive hot chocolate. My guess is they were sitting on the shelf for way too long. The Nico tella was ok but very expensive and didn’t taste like the sample. Again probably too long on the shelf. Overall, the class was fun but I wouldn’t buy anything from the shop. Very poor quality and way overpriced.

We were limited for time so could only do the short 'free (tip-based) tour' and it was EXCELLENT. So informative, interesting and fun. We have a fair level of Spanish so opted to have the tour in Spanish. Our guide, Yesareli, spoke so clearly for us which meant we were able to understand everything. She made it great fun with lots of hands on interaction. We tasted/tried a whole range of stuff at the end; chocolate drinks, nibs, body creams etc. We really enjoyed this 20 minute experience and would highly recommend.

I have been to many cacao/ chocolate museums around the world. I certainly have to see that although not the best one I have been it was still a fun experience. We took what the called the “express tour” which was 45 min were we ended up making our own bars of chocolate 🍫. The staff were nice, even tough some seemed a bit tired and ready to go home. I would still recommend it to anyone visiting Granada specially with younger familiy members. 👍🏼
The Catholic Church Cathedral of Granada is a newly built structure commissioned by Priest Silvestre Alvarez and designed by Italian architect Andres Zappata. Its eclectic style combines classic arcade, renaissance cupolas, ogive, and half-point arcs. The cathedral's colorful interior and nighttime lights make it a symbol of the city. Visitors can climb to the top for scenic views of Granada and capture great overall pictures of the city.
Too be honest we didn’t enter to the inside of the church. But for outside it a certainly beautiful, being able to apprentice the Colonia architecture with such a magnificent church ⛪️. I would definitely recommend to at least take a look at it form the outside if you are in Granada. 👍🏼👍🏼

You can’t miss this Cathedral in Granada. Considering that most of the city is flat, this building stands out easily amongst the other structures. Towering far above all of it, visible from kilometres around, are the distinctive yellow and white bell towers and dome of the Catedral de Granada.
There’s been a church here since the late 16th century, but, along with other key sites in the city, it suffered at the hands of raiders in the centuries since. In 1856, the church was destroyed at the behest of William Walker}. Later in the century, rebuilding began but continued only fitfully due to lack of funding. The current version that you see now as largely complete by about 1915.
The inside is not the most ornate of the old city’s Catholic cathedrals. In fact, it’s relatively sparsely decorated. But what it lacks in crammed-to-the-rafters lavishness it makes up for in scale and a sense of space and calm. The nave is expansive and spacious.
The main altar piece is a strikingly beautiful arrangement of a statue of Mary surrounded by silver and backed by bright blue mosaic tiles. Spaced around the interior are a number of statues depicting religious figures and other religious artwork. And off to one side is a small but pretty little white chapel.
Well worth visiting and allow at least 30 minutes to explore the inside and outside.

30 cordobas to climb to the top tower. Beautiful church right infront of a plaza where you can find goods manufactured in Granada. The church is still used for mass, ps dont ring the bell as that is the sound of mass initiating.

The staff is not friendly, unwelcoming. You can climb up to get views of the city from the top of the cathedral; it is a nice, quick stop as you're walking around the main park.

The Islets of Granada is a group of 365 volcanic islets located off the coast of Granada. These serene islands are home to private residences and tourist accommodations, making it an attractive destination for travelers. Visitors can take a boat tour to explore the different islands and learn about their unique history and ownership. One notable island was purchased by a veterinarian for the local monkey population to live in. The tours offer opportunities to observe the local wildlife, with monkeys occasionally boarding boats as one such experience.
A very nice boat ride to the isles of Granada lake.

Mombacho is a volcanic peak towering at 4,409 feet that boasts a cloud forest and two hiking trails around the crater. Additionally, there is a dwarf forest to explore. Visitors can enjoy numerous activities such as taking a boat tour to Las Isletas, going on a bike ride or horseback trek to Mapache, doing canopy tours on Mombacho volcano or visiting handicraft centers in Masaya.
really great place, can highly recommend to go there. But here are some adivces
You can only entry the park between 7-10 am. Later it is not possible to walk to the top anymore. It’s 5 km to the top that take you about 1.5 hours by walking. It is really steep!
You can also go with a truck, don’t know if that’s also possible after 10.
The entry without a guide is 400 c.
At the top it’s a lot colder.

As usual prices from the internet are different from reality once on the spot.
So in August 2022 prices for foreigners are 5$ for entrance + 2$ for the maintenance of the tracks. That's only if you want to do the easy track, you have two other options where you'll have to pay a compulsory guide.
Then you have yo pay an additional 20$ to go up and down. However on their website it was clearly said that the shuttle was 2$ one way (which feels more like a normal price considering it's a 20 mins ride)
So...you'll have to pay $27 for a hike that lasts one hour. Not worth it considering it's not the best view around.
Locals pay less for the transportation, which is stupid, because it's only transportation and it shouldn't be more expensive for us. I understand for entrance and other fees that locals pay less but here. Any way we just didn't go.
Keep going like this and you'll have nobody on your volcano 👍
Laurent Henry — Google review
Very nice place to go. The weather is magnigicient (24°C) you can feel the pure air and also the sulfur in some areas because the volcano it is still active. If you are in good shape you could visit The Puma way. It is a 4 km tour but if you are not in shape, don't go that way, take the regular way which is a 1 km tour.

Amazing place to visit; I recommend a lot this place full of adventure
Deiby GO — Google review
Rip Off. Ridiculously overpriced. Foreigners pay 5 dollars at the entrance. For each track (3 of them) you pay again. 2 of them require a guide which in English of course is more than in Spanish. Taking a shuttle is 20(!!!) dollars for one person. Have been in Asia and everything from Mexico to Nicaragua but this is the biggest scam of all. Just did the crater trail but nothing special at all. Do yourself and spend this money somewhere else.

Excellent outdoor experience. A must if you are visiting Nicaragua. Great photography place. They also offer night trails with experts and lodging. Service truck can take you from the base to the top, alternatively you can hike your way up. The Biological Station is rustic. Meals are limited at the top. If your doing the Puma trails go prepared with plenty of drinks and snacks. Eco style bathrooms. Avoid the raining season. Not infant friendly.
MM CR — Google review
This is a great hike with amazing views at the top. We walked from the entrance at the parking lot at the bottom and it took about 2 hours to get to the trailheads at the top. Walking costs $2 and getting a 4x4 costs $20. Park entrance is $5. The walk to the top is extremely steep (straight up the volcano) but do-able. Halfway down, at the cafe, we hopped on a shuttle and they brought us down.

I've had many surf lessons in many locations and Morrie was by far the best. His technique made a huge change in my ability to stand up. He's positive and has lots of information about the ocean. We had a lesson and then rented boards for a week. It was affordable and a wicked good time!
Marie-Helene Robin — Google review
My partner and I took a lesson with Morrie and it was excellent. The start was an introduction of how the ocean creates waves and how to be safe. We then warmed up and practiced our stance. When we were ready we headed in to the water to catch some fun waves! Thanks for a great afternoon and I highly recommend to grab a lesson with Morrie!
Samantha Steel — Google review
Absolutely loved meeting Morrie today and learning how to surf. The first hour was really valuable getting to know about waves / rips and where best to catch waves for a beginner. Out on the board Morrie was by far the best instructor out there. He consistently got us in the best spot to catch waves which was epic. Can't recommend enough! 🤙🤙
Teresa Luckman — Google review
Me and my girlfriend are what you can call advanced beginners and we came to Popoyo to work on our skills. Morrie first gave another basic lesson to make sure we knew what we were doing once we were getting into more serious waves. We really enjoyed this lesson and were amazed by the theory part as well. A couple of days later he took us further into the bay and we had a superb time!! It was amazing be in the Pacific at sunset riding waves with him!! If you go to Popoyo, you do want to surf. If you want to become a better surfer, you have to go with Morrie!
Martijn Frusch — Google review
I took one surf lesson with Morrie and I was able to dial in on my surfing more than I have with any other surf lesson I've taken in the past. He doesn't just show you what to do, but makes you understand what each different type of wave is doing and how to respond to the ocean. Doggos and the best prices on the beach were a big plus!
Caitlin Long — Google review
This was simply phenomenal. Morrie conveyed to us the wisdom of the ocean, along with all the practical experience to begin our journey of mastering the waves. It was both philosophical and highly tactical. The instructions were immediately usable and we got great results. There was even a beautiful moment between my girlfriend and I surfing a wave into shore together. Synchronized surfing! It was truly a beautiful experience to remember.
Alex Winn — Google review
Today had my first ever surf lesson with Morrie and managed not only to stand on the board but even got a glimpje of that good feeling of riding a wave! For 99% thanks to Morrie, he is a great teacher who helps you understand the why and how behind surfing and what you should do to get up and stand on your board. Thanks man!

Man, I can't imagine there being a better Spanish school in the entire of Central America. My partner and I were total beginners which we were a bit worried about because most people at the school were much more advanced than us, but it helped us SO MUCH and was so fun and nice. All the teachers were super lovely, including the owner Juan. We would even consider Juan and another teacher there, Julian, to be our friends now. We definitely 100% recommend doing one-on-one classes, and if possible, 2-3 weeks minimum if you're a total beginner like us. We only did a week and were very sad to leave. We did the homestay as well, which for a week, would be perfect. Honestly, such a fantastic experience, can't recommend highly enough.

Taking classes at the school has been a big highlight of my time in Nicaragua!! The school is very professional, the atmosphere is so so good and positive and the teachers are full of energy. Every morning I felt excited ‘to go to school’ again. At first I wasn’t sure if I would like the 1-1 classes, but I wouldn’t have wanted it any different way. You really build a connection with your teacher and you’re forced to speak, a lot. You’re not only learning Spanish, you’re learning a lot about Nicaragua as well. I look back at this time with a big smile, it’s a very special memory for me. Special credits to my teacher Julian, who has been a great teacher and still is a good friend. 🍀

My husband stayed with a local family for a month, and attended language school daily. By the end he was able to converse in Spanish, and he had nothing but good things to say about his instructors and his experience at the school. I came to visit for a week during his trip, and we both stayed with his home stay family. They were FABULOUS! We had a great little space, the food was delicious, and it allowed us to get a more authentic, off-the-beaten track, experience. We even got to take part in a once a year family fiesta, where they killed a pig and 9 chickens, and cooked for what seemed like the whole town! Juan Delgado, the organizer of the school was incredibly helpful, accommodating, and professional. I highly recommend Pie De Gigante Language School to anyone interested in learning Spanish abroad, and don't skip the home stay!

We've just finished 5 weeks studying at the Gigante Spanish school and can't recommend it highly enough. The teachers were fantastic. We went from being total beginners to holding conversations in just 5 weeks thanks to the brilliant teaching. Juan and the team went above and beyond on numerous occasions, for example taking me to the local clinic when I had a surfing injury. Studying here also meant we could go surfing everyday, which injury aside, was the perfect combination. We went for the homestay option which sped up the learning process and was really cost effective. If you're looking for a beautiful place to quickly learn Spanish whilst also surfing, definitely choose here.

I was recommended this place by some fellow travellers I met in Mexico and am stoked I was put onto this hidden gem. My lessons were 1 on 1 with Julian, who made the classes fun and was really good at explaining everything clearly. Sometimes it felt more like 2 friends talking, but he still made sure I was learning my verbs and tenses and expanding my vocabulary. The town of El Gigante is a beautiful quiet little place away from the busier more famous surf breaks near by, though the wave here is still a fun little wave with a good vibe and not too crowded. Staying in a home stay with Mary Elena was also a good way to practice Spanish, experience some local culture and eat some good food. I even moved to another place in town when my home stay was over and extended my time in Gigante a few more nights!

Incredible Spanish School literally on the beach with very friendly staff and management.
I took private lessons with a young a motivated teacher and was able to schedule them flexible throughout the week which was a big plus. Easy communication with the owner via WhatsApp at any time. If you are an advanced speaker ask if Yosseling is available, she knows what she is doing and is eager to help you level up your Spanish.
You can also typical have good local food at great prices before or after your school as there is a local abuela cooking meals for you on demand.
I have been to several Spanish Schools in Mexico and Spain but this one was simply the most effective and fun by far.

My boyfriend and I took a Spanish class for one week during our stay in El Gigante. They teach 1:1 and I can especially share my experience that I had with my teacher Julian. He really individualised my classes to pre-knowledge and as well to what I wanted to learn during the week. Besides learning, we always had fun during our conversations that we of course had in Spanish. I feel like I have improved a lot here. If I'd have stayed longer in El Gigante, I'd definitely took further classes.

El Gigante a beautiful and tranquil place to learn Spanish. I looked into many different schools in Central America and can't imagine one being a better fit for me. The most wonderful Spanish school!! We spent a week here and my teacher Keyner was incredible. He structured the lessons so well, was so patient and fun to work with and taught me so much. The daily 4hrs study was broken up with group games/activities which were great to both practice Spanish and meet other travellers. The school also is right in front of the ocean which was such a beautiful view for lessons. I’ll always be grateful for the experience here and my wonderful teacher.
We opted for the Homestay option and unfortunately it wasn’t quite as hoped for, particularly in terms of having opportunities to chat with the local family and practice our Spanish. As we were only staying for 1 short week however, we didn’t raise this with the School until afterwards (in fear of awkwardness with the family). If raised earlier, we know the the School and management there would have supported us though, and they were very receptive to our feedback afterwards. Of course all homestay experiences are different for everyone, this was just ours.
Thank you Pie de Gigante Spanish School!

The island of Ometepe boasts a towering volcano named Concepción that has a long history of eruptions. This active volcano offers several hiking trails through its tropical forest and loose volcanic stone terrain, which can be challenging for even the fittest hikers. The hike to the summit takes about seven to 10 hours and requires proper hiking equipment such as water, snacks, and sturdy shoes.
One of my fav hikes. After reading the reviews I thought that it would be very difficult but I enjoyed it a lot. We went with a guide (Puma tours Ometepe) and we took 7-8 to finish the hike. The path is well indicated and clean. We didn't get to see much in the summit because of the clouds but it was totally worth it. I enjoyed the different challenges of the trail (sand, jungle, rocks...). You should get hiking shoes and 2l of water. Physically is demanding becase it's steep but nothing crazy.

Most symetric volcan on earth. The climb to the top is not for begginers but it can be done in a 6 hours walk. Be sure to being enough water cause the second half is pretty hard as there is no trees, only volcans rocks, but the view us awesome.
Be aware : the top is usually covered by clouds so if you reach the top, you have more chance to have the breath taking view if you leave in the morning !

Excellent hike, and the guide we were given was very knowledgable of the volcano and the path itself and was able to identify lots of plants along the way.
Prepare for the humidity at the bottom.
Prepare for the exposure at the top.
You should get to a point where theres a bundle of walking sticks right before the incline increases, our guide said we could take them if we wanted to...do it, take one.
On the day we hiked there was a ring of cloud surrounding the summit so once we got about 3/4 of the way up visibility was quite poor, but it did nothing to lessen the experience. The last couple hundred yards can be intimidating and you get to crawling on hands and knees at times, but I still recommend this to any avid hikers who want a unique challenge.
Our time round trip was just under 6 hours

This is a spectacular location that boasts incredible views of the town and the coast north of town. I recommend you visit at sunset! The walk up is quite challenging, but vehicles and motorcycles can come up to a landing parking area and then the last climb is minimal. A must when visiting SJDS!
Chef Gerry Rozo — Google review
Stunning views of SJDS bay. Peaceful church under the Cristo with historical facts about the area. You can hike or drive up. Cost: $2
Jordan Jacquot — Google review
The view from up here is spectacular. You can see the complete beauty of San Juan del Sur and take photos of it. It has a few benches to sit and chat.
Noem? Romero — Google review
It's a beautiful view with an entrance of 2 dollars for gringos .It's a steep hill to go up, paved so it's not difficult to walk. We went for the sunset and weren't disappointed.
Arriana Michopoulou — Google review
Beautiful views over the city and the sunsets are always great here.
Maryam M — Google review
Beautiful view of San Juan Del Sur from the top. We walked from town center and it took an hour. The last part is up a very steep road. We took a few breaks on the way up and finally made it. The walk is definitely worth it!

Such an awesome place to watch the sunset. Amazing on all levels. Story of the building of this place is super cool as well.
Alan Hedrick — Google review
Beautiful place to see the sunset! You must drive up a steep hill and still walk a few more steps. Plan ahead so you make it on time. There's a fee of $2 per foreigners and $1 for nationals.
Mili Castro — Google review
Easy walk along the beach to the end where there is a gate that leads to a path and then a steep walk up to the statue by road. Nice to go up for sunset. Our hostel advised us to leave right after the sun goes down so we are not walking along the beach in the dark as he has heard of people being robbed a few times per year on the beach at night.
Jenny Winder — Google review
Some difficult place to reach by car. GPS is inaccurate. Pay minimal fee to enter. It's worth the effort for breath taking views
Faith Believer — Google review
Worth only for the view of town. You can see a good view of rocks and beach from here. Close at 6 pm. 20-30 min walk to there and 70 C or 2$ entrance fee.

•November 2023• a fun little hike to a stunning view of San Juan Del Sur and the giant Jesus statue. Definitely worth the effort to get there.
Steven Theodore Windsor — Google review
So much fun to get to! Such a steep road! There was a guy standing at a gate collecting entrance money... I think we got over charged. The view down into San Juan del Sur.
Angela Greer — Google review
It's definitely worth seeing, plus you get a spectacular view of the bay.

Just getting to the top is an adventure but we’ll worth it. The views are espectacular and you can appreciate the natural beauty of this country. Make sure to look around so you don’t miss out on the good photo spots.

Isla Ometepe, situated in Lake Nicaragua, is the world's biggest lake island. It encompasses an area of roughly 270 sq km and houses around 35,000 inhabitants who primarily rely on agriculture, particularly plane tree cultivation. The island features two active volcanoes that exceed a height of 1600 meters: Madera and Conception. In addition to these natural landmarks, Ometepe also boasts petroglyphs and capuchin monkeys among other exotic fauna.
One of the best, best places to go in Nicaragua 🤍✨ it’s really gorgeous 😍 I fell in love with the natural beauty everywhere. 💘
Josseline Aguilera — Google review
Was going to go to Popoyo but I was recommended this place instead and I have no regret. Had an amazing time exploring the island with the ATV (safest option). Make it one of your stop if you're going to Nicaragua. The ferry ride is a about an hour from San Jorge. I took the small boat to go (can feel unsafe but we made it) and the big one (much more relax) to come back. They offer both rental services on and off (cheaper) the island.

Pools were very nice. A lot of flies around tables which was a bit annoying. Food in restaurant is not great but a nice way to spend a few hours. Well shaded and really nice water.
Andrew Cotter — Google review
I would spend one night only on this island, rent an ATV, go to the waterfall, explore around see the volcanos and come back the next day. There are cute little bed and breakfasts around, but just make sure you book your trip ahead of time so you can bring your car into the island.
Kiyomi V — Google review
A must for every Nicaragua trip! The island is beautiful, calm and has a lot to offer. I'd recommend renting a bike to explore the island. Additional plus: Hardly any mosquitos!
David S. — Google review
Amazing, peacefull island with two vulcano and lot of beautiful places for visit. I reccomend lent there motocycle or ATV better than car because many roads are really bad to see many places like waterfall, playa mangos for sunset or ojo de agua. I came here in off- season so places were empty so it was good. But in some places i felt like after some catastrophic dissaster some building or docks were empty like after nuclear accident i felt there like in chernobyl.

Amazing island. We loved our time here exploring the jungle and volcanos. The nature is fun to explore and the views of the volcanoes are just stunning. Very fun to ride around the island on a motorbike or Vespa. So much to do and see! Ojo de agua swimming pool, horseback riding tour through the jungle to see monkeys, amazing volcano views. Incredible and unique place!

Lovely island. Moyogalpa is worth staying in for around 3 days and it’s definitely worth hiring a scooter (~$18 for a day) and heading out to Santa Cruz/Balgue way

Playa San Juan del Sur is a picturesque beach that boasts an attractive crescent shape and stunning views of the sunset. The location is dotted with oceanfront dining options, offering visitors excellent opportunities to savor delicious meals while enjoying the charming ambience. For those interested in exploring more, there's the Christ statue situated atop the nearby hills. The beach offers majestic scenic beauty with crystal clear water perfect for swimming or simply enjoying a stroll along its shores.
One of the most exotic fun filled bays to travel to in the world. It is a surfer's and fish eaters paradise. Plenty of wonderful beachside hotels, pubs and restaurants. Come from all over the world to relax, eat surf, fish, walk and party.

PSA to not believe everything you see in pics. Beach was dirty and water is gross. Don't go here if you only want beach and sea time. Total disappointment.
Great views of the beach if you go high up enough though. Town is your typical beach town (I enjoy beach towns so that was fine with me).

•November 2023• a beautiful beach with perfectly warm water and a great place to watch the sunset. Also some great waves to swim in.

I was scammed in this area, don’t trust anybody here. The beach itself is quite unpleasant, maybe it looks nice at sunset with the boats, but I wouldn’t go swimming here.

There's definitely better beaches in the area, but it’s nice to watch the sunset. Everytime I came to this beach in the late afternoon, there was always volleyball games taking place on the beach and several people hanging out and drinking while waiting for sunset.

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua
I'll never travel to San Juan del Sur without this trip planner again
Wooded site with a natural swimming hole of volcanic-origin water amid native plants & wildlife.
An amazing place to spend half a day. Recommended to go early as it gets very busy with locals. The water is stunning and a great temperature for swimming on a hot day. It's $3 entry still which is great. If you walk up the hill there is a good viewpoint and howler monkeys. The trails aren't well marked however.
Michael Messenger — Google review
Paid $10 entry with $5 credit to spend at the bar. Lovely spot to chill and enjoy the rope swing. Best to arrive early to enjoy the sun while it is quiet.
Hollie Hudspith — Google review
We had fun here with the rope swing and refreshing water, but it felt like a cheap waterpark. I can imagine for someone who doesn’t spend time in clean lakes very often its a nice place but I wouldn’t return for $10.
Sam Raymond — Google review
really nice beautiful and chill place. Nice spot to jump to the pool. The water are fresh and cold and feel great. Everything around is lush green. Nice thing to do on Ometepe.
Eyal Roe — Google review
A beautiful pastoral place. Admission is $5 per person. There is an arranged parking lot, a restaurant and good service. The water is relatively cool, there is Tarzan, swings in the water and plenty of shade, the place was a bit crowded but there was room for everyone to sit.
Aviah Shochetman — Google review
Beautiful cold water pool with fun swing. The admission is $10 but they give you $5 credit towards the bar/restaurant (and the mojitos were super cheap!). Lovely place to spend a couple of hours cooling off.
Emily H — Google review
This the cleanest most natural place I have ever visited in my life. It is a freshwater spring from a volcanic mountain which has been cleverly dammed to create an Olympic sized fresh water pool with zero chemicals. It is located in a dense and verdant rainforest on the Island of Ometepi in Lago Nicaragua. You can only get to the island by ferry. If you are able to arrange the trip, it's a must. So very beautiful.
Ira Baker — Google review
Perfect place to get some refreshing. Entrance is $10, but you get $5 in return for food / drinks. There's a 45 minute walk too which takes through this small jungle, we saw some howler apes which was great but other than that the hike wasn't all to spectacular.
Michael Peeters — Google review
Way overpriced, feels like a scam the way they give you $5 credit for the bar but then the prices are very inflated and the food looked awful. We were shocked when they asked for $10 each for what is essentially a swim in a pool for max a few hours.
It’s nice water and a reasonable setting but busy and just not worth it when there is so much to see on the island.
Joseph Rose — Google review
Ojo de agua still remains as an excellent place to visit. The clear waters and surrounded by nature makes it excellent and refreshing. The fact that they allow you to bring your own drinks even of they do sell themselves is genius.
Erling Miranda — Google review
Great place to spend a couple of hours! Entrance was 5$ per person, and if you come in the morning 8am you probably be one of the only one there and that without any bugs!
And don’t forget to grab a fresh coconut, with or without the rum 🍹
Marcel Tornow — Google review
USA Traveler: My friend and I went here and had a wonderful time. Highly recommend! It's 10$ a person for a day pass. They have bathrooms at the parking lot but they also have showers and changing rooms closer to the "pool". It's apparently volcanic spring water, whatever it was was nice. There is a restaurant there and bar. Maybe a shop or two. Lots of chairs and tables to claim. We left our stuff out of sight for around 20 minutes and it appeared to be untouched. There's a rope to play on, swings in the pool, and a Tarzan swing to jump into the pool. No lifeguards. Wheelchair accessible to the pool. Some stairs that are wide going into the pool. The pool is surrounded by plants/jungle and even some go into the pool. Very cool! It was very shaded and so no sunscreen was needed.

Natural volcanic water (not hot) pool, with clean relaxing area, chairs. 10$ Fee (getting 2 drinks for free). Free walking trail (35 min) on the mountain, with animal view.
תומר כהן Tomer M.Cohen — Google review
It's a cool place to relax but every time you pay for something at the bar they assume you don't want the change. Guys, you have to deserve your tips, not extort the money.
Also, the trail walk is not free - it costs $2. Big part of it leads through muddy banana fields - only animals we saw were birds, lizards and cows. Maybe there are monkeys sometimes - I don't know.
Tomasz Smiatacz — Google review
Beautiful spot to chill out and relax. Was a little busy but we had chairs to sit on. Some loud groups but to be expected! Great rope swing, cheap beers ($2.5) and chips $4

Fun crisp refreshing natural spring water. Relaxing. Runs from under the nearby volcano. Large Iguanas or Howling monkeys surround you. $10 entry but it gives you a $5 drink. You choose. Great restaurant service. Food is brought to your lounge chairs or table. Incredible setting.
Yossi Polinger — Google review
The pool itself was nice and refreshing, but quite crowded with almost no place to sit (maybe because it was saturday) and the entrance fee is quite high for foreigners. When you go there don't miss out on the nature trails ! I was the only one there and saw so many monkeys, parrots, vultures and more :)

Don’t miss going there if you visit the island, some people take a ferry to come here and return same day!
Very nice natural water among the trees.
$10 entry with $5 back on food or drinks.
Changing rooms available, showers, playground and parking.
We enjoyed the Tarazan swing.
Food was good too but not the smoothie
Hussain Almoamen — Google review
Great spot to come to if you’re in Ometepe! You could easily spend a whole morning or afternoon here. It’s $10 entry but that gives you $5 to spend on food or drinks once inside. They have a great menu and plenty of drinks from coconuts to cocktails. The springs are stunning and so refreshing. Crystal clear!
Carys Reid-Davies — Google review
The most beautiful place on the island, a must visit. Costs $10 to enter which can be paid in cordobas and by card as well. This includes $5 to spend in the restaurant/bar. It’s just a short ride from the main road to the car park. The water is a nice refreshing temperature and there’s even a rope swing. Other than the insects it’s almost perfect. Staff are very nice as well. The food is average but it did come quickly.

Beautiful place to spend the day. $10 to enter but $5 towards a food voucher. Other people in the comments are saying food and things are cheaper on the island but this place has been made nice, safe , and relaxing. To me, it is SO worth it! Came here as a group of 4, we swam, had smoothies, played card games and watched some young local boys doing tricks off the rope swing. Must do on the island !

Great place to relax and cool down from the heat.
It was $10 entrance but you get $5 back to spend on food and drinks.
We had lunch here which was lovely and the prices are reasonable.
Great facilities to change and shower.
Amie Bentley — Google review
The location was nice and not too crowded in the afternoon. Enough space around the clear pools to relax, but not a huge area.
The entrance was rather pricey though (including a mandatory 5$ voucher for food/drinks); the service at the bar/restaurant was very poor (very long waiting times to order and pay, many items on the menu weren't available).
Low-key sand beach & surf spot featuring a restaurant with palapas & a small, basic hotel.
Beautiful and clean beach with soft sand and amazing views. Ample sitting areas with showers and bathrooms. Food and drinks were delicious. $3pp entry fee and space for parking.

Superior beach. Surf rentals, shaded beach seating, bathrooms, showers, good food and they don't try to gouge you, even though they don't let outside food in. I just came here for the day. It cost me $3 per person and is totally worth it.
Did I mention they rake the beachfront for debris so it's easy on your bare feet?

Great shady seating areas with hammocks at no extra cost. Food is tasty and reasonably priced. Very good and friendly service. And the beach is just gorgeous 😍

We went to a lot of beaches in Nicaragua and this was our favorite. We actually went twice. It is a 25 min drive from San Juan del sur, the first time we rented a side x side vehicle and drove ourselves. The second time we got a taxi. We paid $40usd for 4 of us to go and he dropped us off and then picked us up 4 hours later. You have to pay $3usd per person to enter the beach and you aren't allowed to bring coolers with food to the beach. There is a really good restaurant with lots of tables and covered palapas. We had drinks and lunch, it was really great service and food. Highly recommend.

It's a fun route to get there. Fair entrance fee (3usd extrañeros). The beach is HUGE with no rocks almost. Fun to run walk and play. The beach itself has very little rocks and the water is clean. The place to sit has just good food/fair pricing for what you get. No extra charge for hammocks etc.

Excellent beach for surfing and swimming! Love the setup with serviced cabanas along the beach. We were surprised to see lights and outlets in each cabana, too.
Morning was nice and quiet, and at noon they started playing dance music. Service was great and food was amazing — especially the dorado daily special for $10 including a drink.
Highly recommend for a half-day trip near SJDS. The drive in is not for the feint of heart; recommend you have 4x4.
Maderas Volcano is a non-active, forest-covered mountain on the island of Ometepe. The climb to its 1394m peak is challenging but rewarding, with guided treks lasting seven to eight hours round-trip. The trail leads through cloud forests and ends in a steep descent to a cold green lake at the crater's bottom.
The hike is worth every step, and there are plenty!
We started at Finca Magdalena, we had to pay each 3 USD and had to sign a paper because we did not wanted a guide. So it is possible to go on your own!!!
The best preparation is to download a offline map on your mobile and use GPS to follow your route. The path is pretty much straight up the vulcano. So you won't get lost. But knowing how high you already are helps, because the only viewing platform is on 700m of altitude. Beside of that there is no landmark to know where you are (GPS helps a lot). With a short break we needed 3 hours to get to the top, where you have an amazing view over the crater lake and down to the big lake. Everything on the maderas is covered in jungle. So there is a lot of wildlife arround you.
From arround 800m altitude the path gets muddy, slippery and steep. Now, when it rains during the night, it's even trickier. But still managable. Bring enough water, food and good shoes.
The downhill part of the hike is as well challenging. We needed 2h 30min with a short break too.
In total the hike took us 5h 45min with lunch on top and two short breaks.
Roman Koch — Google review
We took the ferry over the previous night and then had a tough time finding our accommodations for the night on the island. There are not a lot of services here so be prepared to rough it a bit. I’d recommend a guide for this hike - and I would leave early in the am so that once you reach the top you can enjoy a swim. Really pretty views on the way down. Fairly challenging just given the long day. Hate to say this and its my fault and a lesson learned, but I left my trail shoes outside the door of my unit to dry and they were gone the next morning. Giving it a 3 star experience for me, personally, because my lodging was mediocre at best and it was a longer day than I anticipated….but I think most others who are interested in hiking, plan better, and enjoy adventure will probably give it a 4-5 star experience.
Bob Benson — Google review
The Volcán Maderas is a 1300 meter high volcano with a climb that starts at 100 meters high. You must take a guide because the trail is very complex and not marked at all. It cost us $10 per person in a group of 9 people. It is highly recommended to do the trip with closed shoes, there were some who did with sandals, but it is not recommended. The route is very slippery terrain with very narrow areas, the trip is a very difficult trip, 6 km each way and took 5 hours of walking each way. At the end you get to a lookout above the small water reservoir, you can continue to go down with a more difficult walk for another half hour and get right to a pool of water, but the ground is very muddy and you can't enter the water! There is one beautiful observation point about an hour and a half from the beginning which I think is enough for the trip.
Aviah Shochetman — Google review
A really fun and adventurous hike! Climbing over/under/between tree branches. Highly recommend if you like adventure. The trail from the rim to the lake was very muddy. We had heard that you could swim in the lake but the lake is 75% mud - I do not recommend trying to swim in it, it was instant regret 😂
Ebba Roxling — Google review
It was a great hike on the volcano. We started at 6:30am and were back at 2:15pm. The hike is going through the rain forest so it is really really muddy. It is real adventure hiking in the rain forest, see all the plants and if your lucky some monkeys hanging in the trees.
When you reach the top, don't expect to see something, it is usually really foggy and you can't barly see something. Great experience and adventure, much recommended.
Lars — Google review
The hike was one of the greatest experiences ever - once you get to the top you will be rewarded with some amazing tranquil lagoon full of birds and beautiful nature
Russell King — Google review
I’m a sportive person, but it took me 9,5 hours for hiking back and down. Around 16/17 kilometers. To be honest, I was never so exhausted in my life. The trail was at the most times muddy, slippery and steep. On the top, we could barely see around 50 meters. Unfortunately, it wasn‘t worth it.
Maybe on dry season, the trail isn’t so muddy and slippery and around the vulcano aren‘t so many clounds.
But! During rainy season, i can NOT recommend it.
studierter Akademiker — Google review
I think it is possibly the best hike in my life. Be careful, you need some previous preparation. Sorry for the lack of pictures, but we tried to enjoy every step.
If you love pure hike it’s a must do! You should be doing this hike with a guide or you might get lost!!!!!!⚠️⚠️
Very exhausting hike, you’re going to be climbing the mountain for 4h, there are three different environments, dry forest, wet forest and cloud forest. Last two it’s extremely wet. Bring along a huge amount of water (2-3L per person)
The path it’s muddy and slippery, we got pretty dirty by the end of the hike!
Also it is a very good place to see some wild animals. We saw white-face monkey and howling monkeys, coral snake, and even a Mountain Crab (huge)
Mario Vazquez — Google review
Beautiful nature, you can climb it in 6hours, or take the half option to the mirador which offers a great view if Ometepe island !
thibaut lancrenon — Google review
You are required to hire a guide to climb the mountain and have to pay 100c entrance fee.
The trail (5km one way) can be very muddy. The first half is a lot easier than the second half. If there are clouds on top of the mountain, you will not see the crater lake from the top nor have a view. Halfway is a viewpoint from where you can see something even when it's cloudy.
