My first time in the passigic Ocean. Amazing beach, perfect to surf, I would say because waves are very strong. We went in the low season (September), so a few people and a lot of good photos.

Delightful spot. Litter is a big issue for me. Pity there is no clean up crew.

San Juan Venado is a tranquil and relaxed destination, perfect for camping and getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life. During certain times of the year, visitors have the opportunity to witness turtles and take a boat tour through the estuary, where they may encounter crocodiles and diverse wildlife. The area's ever-changing water and sand create a fascinating sight, while the community's efforts in conserving and rejuvenating the estuary are commendable.
Fascinating the way the water and sand are in constant change. Great to see the community involved in preserving and restoring the estuary.

It was a really nice experience with a lot of good information about the life and the great literary movement about Ruben Dario. I love the phrase from the poet si pequeña es la patria, uno grande la sueña.

It's a amazing place where you can find Rubén Darío work art and at the same time is museum and library, there a lot of stories about Darío and many interested book about him and others poets, it's a magic place extremely recommended
Henry Rueda — Google review
What a beautiful dedication to the most amazing poet. Definitely worth a visit. You cannot take pictures of the main rooms as it is prohibited but understandable.
Lila Howells — Google review
If you have the chance to visit this museum, ask for the tourist guide. He gave us a wonderful lecture about Rubén Darío's life related with the historical objects in the museum.
Give him a good tip 👌
Alondra Sofía Avendaño — Google review
Learned about the life of Rubin Dario, his home and hometown. I read his poem ," Margarita". It was great. Rubin Dario is held in the highest honor by people in Nicaragua and many places in central and south America. The home by today's standards is pretty basic. However in days gone by it was a beautiful home.
Billy Coleman — Google review
When in León, visit the museum of Rubén Darío, the house will bring you to the times of Darío, live his memories and learn about poetry in León. There are clean bathrooms and a seating area in front of the nice, fresh looking garden.
Luis Vanegas — Google review
It is very nice it has many personal artifacts, including his diplomatic dress attire. The museum is located in Rubén Dario's house where he lived and died. It has his bedroom as it appeared on the day he died.

The museum is simple, but interesting. Yhe guide did an awesome job explaining everything in it. I enjoyed my visit🙂
The Ortíz Gurdián Foundation Art Center is an exceptional museum of contemporary art in Central America. The museum is housed in a distinctive building with a magnificent courtyard that displays an impressive collection of artwork by renowned artists such as Picasso, Chagall and Miro, alongside works created by talented Nicaraguan artists. The museum's collection spans across two buildings and exquisite greenery-filled courtyards.
Free on Sundays.
Closes at 1600.
I could spend at least two hours here.
They have a large and diverse collection here, including works from Nicaraguan, Central American, and international artists from as long ago as the sixteenth century to as recent as this one. The building itself could also qualify as art, and frames the works well.
Lucas Crampton — Google review
The art you see there is really something special. The structure and the details were really beautiful. I also liked the house with the different rooms and the staff were all very friendly and helpful so that you could admire each room.
Unfortunately, I found it very sad that turtles and fish have to be part of such a beautiful place. They live in a very small "pond" in the middle of the exhibition. If the animals could be released again, or given a larger and cleaner, species-appropriate home, that would definitely be better.
Animals do not belong in a museum!
Lisa — Google review
Very beautiful building with extensive collection. Brilliant to see so much work by Nicaraguan and other Central American artists. There are printed guides to the works (in Spanish and English) in some rooms.

Amazing collection and beautiful layout. One of the best museums I’ve been to. It gets hot inside but it’s perfect for getting out of the sun for a few hours.
Foreigners pay 125C or 130C if you don’t have the 5 apparently. It’s not free on Sunday for us 🥰

Surprising museum. Some great local works along with a few internationally known artists: Rembrant, Picasso, Warhol, Basquiat.

Great art museum! Artist from all South America. The best part is the 2 buildings where the exhibitions are, good atmosphere, clean and amazing architecture! Perfect to spend a couple of hours when in Leon.
Francisco Delgado — Google review
Truly amazing art gallery. Much larger and more comprehensive than we realized. The gallery is an original colonial building, which in itself is incredible, and then the collections are varied and interesting. Highly recommend spending at least a few hours here.
Michelle Elle — Google review
Spectacular art collection, expansive, great space. A nice surprise to find this here in Leon!
Lisa Mitchell — Google review
Nice museum. A lot bigger and fancier than I expected! The staff turns the lights on/off based on which rooms people are in. They have turtles in 2 of the courtyards! Entry was free for Sandino's birthday May 18.
I read they have Picasso paintings, but didn't see any. I saw other paintings that gave me similar disgusted reactions as his works normally do (with few exceptions like the stick figures on a street in Barcelona wasn't bad). But when I checked the information for those, they were by Latin American artists. So if there are still Picasso paintings here, they weren't any of the disfigured people (monsters) or other ones that make me nauseous. If they were easier-to-look-at ones, then they didn't grab my attention enough to read the info and find out or take photos.
Maddi Petro — Google review
Worth a visit if you like art! Building is beautiful as well as the gardens inside. The art was very diverse, we especially loved the Nicaraguan art.

Went here on our last day in León. Such an amazing collection of arts. If you are tourist they charge you more than a national. It’s a big collection of art, so make sure that you have around 1-2 hours to spend when you are going

Amazing gallery! Local artists and famous artists (Picasso, Andy Warhol...) Beautiful building and nice stuff. Spend 2 hours. Go on Sunday because they donate the money from all the tickets sold on Sundays.
For a fee of 100 Cordobas, visitors can gain insight into the story of la Revolucion at the Museo de la Revolución. Located in an old run-down building previously utilized for interrogations by the Somoza regime, this museum offers brief yet captivating narratives in both Spanish and English. Exploring various rooms and ascending to the squeaky and unstable metal roof provides a picturesque view of the main square. The entrance includes a guide who shares information about the revolution.
Is only a bunch of not really well preserved posters in an old building but history behind that is sensational. Really worth a visit.
View from the upper floor is pretty good too!
Thank Marcello for guide me around!
GreenmanEcoWorrior — Google review
Was really interested in learning about Nicaraguan history. 100 Cardoba entry fee includes guide. Unfortunately, I felt the guide was like a machine talking…too fast. Not much to see but a few pictures. The roof seemed dangerous - can invest a few dollars and install plywood. Glad to help the local economy.

Great museum and a must visit if you want to know more about Nicaraguan history. The guide gave us a tour in Spanish and did everything to make us understand most of it. Also, he’s a real Sandinista! 😊👌🏼

Simply amazing tour! The tour guides are great and come with the price. The roof has amazing views and is a fun experience walking over the metal roofing (the path is easy to follow).
The building is amazing and is steeped in history.
Enjoy the tour and tip to help this museum to continue to expand!

Overview of Nicaraguan history via old and often damaged photos. Was fortunate to be with friend fluent in Spanish to translate.
The host guide spoke little English, but the plus side was that he had participated in recent revolution and experienced the tortures you hear about.
John Nesbit — Google review
Nice museum, good information. The guides seem like they're just following a script but it's a nice touch to the museum. Otherwise the museum would be slightly lifeless. The roof is fine, lots of directions and the guide is up there with you. Pretty view from the top
A Yap — Google review
One of the weirdest 'museum' visits ever. I honestly feel a bit bad giving this review, but we need to be objective here. The tour started with a rooftop walk across broken/rusted iron sheets. We were assured it was perfectly safe, but I don't think any of us felt safe. The purpose of the rooftop walk was unclear to me. Our guide pointed out the different larger buildings across the city (nothing about the revolution). I feel a bit bad for the guide since she clearly wasn't in her comfort zone and a bit nervous. She was also not an ex-revolutionary herself (I guess she was the only English speaking guide available). The explanation given was not much more than reading what was on the photos and newspaper articles on the walls. Detailed questions remained largely unanswered. Only real positive is that the upstairs building is inviting for photographers. Again I feel a bit sorry for writing this, I'm sure with a better guide the experience can be improved. I hope it's taken as constructive feedback and used to insert a bit more 'professionalism' in what is clearly an interesting part of the county's history.
Stijn Floren — Google review
Very interesting little museum, the entrance fee is cheap and totally worth it (100 Córdobas)
There is a guided tour included with the entrance and it doesn't take more than 50 minutes.
I definitely recommend going if you want to know a bit about Nicaragua history
Emiliano Bernabé Navarro — Google review
Great way to delve into the fascinating history of Nicaragua, brought to life by guide. Building has not been renovated since the 1979 revolution, adding to the sense of pathos. Good views over Leon from top floor.
Rachel Brown — Google review
Had a brilliant time here. The entrance is c$100 and included is a guide. I had Marcel who was originally part of the revolution. Have me lots of information and lastly took me to the roof and terraces which overlooked the city with further info. Donated at his request another c$150 for the restoration of the museum. The other parts are quite dilapidated so happy to contribute.

100 Cordobas to have an ex guerrilla to give you an insight, in Spanish or English, into the story of la Revolución. Brief and concise yet interesting and compelling.
Located in an old run down building that was once used by the Somoza regime for interrogations.
You can also visit all the different rooms and go to the metal roof (squeaky and unstable) for a nice view of the main square
The Cathedral-Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also known as the Cathedral of Leon, is a massive baroque/neoclassical structure that offers guided tours and stunning rooftop views. For a small fee and after removing your shoes, visitors can walk on the cathedral's rooftop to enjoy panoramic views of the city and surrounding volcanoes. Unlike other church towers, this experience allows you to witness the cathedral's architecture from a unique angle.
This review is for the roof! It’s 105C per person and if you get lucky, you can get up during sunrise (5.10-5.50). We enjoyed the beautiful views over Leon and the volcanoes around. It’s a really interesting place with all the white colours and the sunrise made it just so pretty!
Tanja Swinkels — Google review
Going to the rooftop of the church and being able to walk amongst the snow colored domes was such a treat. You have to remove your shoes but you are treated to a beautiful view of Leon from the walls of the church. By the way, if you join the Free walking tour of Leon, this is part of the tour and you get to view the sunset on the top. Bring some cash to enter the roof. Definitely a special place and memory.
Esther Huang — Google review
Extremely beautiful cathedral. Going to the cúpulas was the highlight. I was able to take some beautiful pictures. I am no photographer by any means, but just for my memories, and I’m happy with them. Friendly people up top, but not at the entrance. That could use some work.
Kyle Fields — Google review
We were blessed with a slightly overcast day in December, which makes much better photos. I think they might pressure-wash the top of the church every now and then, because photos I've seen look much whiter. However, the dark spots on the roof just added to the photogenic quality. The inside is very beautiful too, with several large oil paintings and a pretty altar. We paid USD $2, I think, to go to the roof.
Elizabeth Maw — Google review
Beautiful church offering amazing views of the surrounding by walking on its rooftop!
Expect to pay $3 (you can pay in cordoba as well) per person
Maxime Lovric — Google review
Perfect place for sunset. Arrive at 450 and buy your tix at the rear of the church. The entry is right hand side of church to climb the belltower. What a view! Didn’t get to watch sunset due to nice storm
Daniel Jones — Google review
Cost me $2 USD to enter the top. Hours are 8:30 - 12pm, 2pm - 5pm
Leo Guy — Google review
Unique experience, walking along the rooftop of this ancient cathedral. Having walked the roof of the Vatican (Rome) or Duomo De Milano (Milan), I am not going to compare. But the peace and solitude of this very locale, cuddled by a very mellow and serene village surrounded by ancient volcanoes can be quite unique! After removing your shoes, you are allowed to survey the vast countryside via the most prominent local in Leon. Nicaragua is a humble, straightened country, and this is a peaceable local.
William Wright — Google review
It costs 107C to enter, and you can walk to the roof. It’s very white out there and it looks nice. You can see the volcanos from here.
Leona van Diest — Google review
The rooftop of this place is really really beautiful, I definitely recommend going to catch the sunset, you can go up like at 4:40 and spend an hour there.
You can take really nice photos with all the white domes
The ticket shall be bought at the back of the cathedral
Emiliano Bernabé Navarro — Google review
Very beautiful church to visit and a must see while in Leon. Go to the rear corner outside to purchase tickets to visit the top. Cost is $3usd pp and walk on the same side around the corner towards the front to enter the narrow hallway up stairs. You must take your shoes off once up top to enter the roof areas. Very quiet early in the morning and pretty much had the top to ourselves.
Jet setter — Google review
Nice place to visit. You have 20 minutes up and you have to take out your shoes. You can see about 8 volcanoes and the view is nice. If you pass by Leon, it’s a good stop!
clau — Google review
While I think it’s a beautiful place, I really didn’t like the treatment of the employees. Nobody told us there was a time limit for the visit, so after spending some 20 minutes on the roof, an employee came and asked us to go down. In this case 3$ is too high price.
Also, they demand to remove shoes but employees themselves walk with shoes. This doesn’t make any sense to me. The rules must be same for everyone.
M D — Google review
Beautiful church! For $3 USD you can walk on the room. They have you remove your shoes (unsure why) and you are limited to 25 minutes.
Mariel Steel — Google review
It costs $3 for foreigners to go up. You have to buy the tickets from behind and then go back to the cathedral so you can go up the roof. It’s a must visit in Leon

Beautiful piece of history. If you are into old churches, architecture, you will love this place!

Calle Rubén Darìo, Av. Central Nte., León, Nicaragua
The Museum of Traditions and Legends is situated in a notorious ex-prison where Nicaraguan folklore is presented through puppet exhibitions. The descriptions for each tale may be lengthy but the displays are imaginative and effectively convey the stories. The utilization of the former prison walls to depict drawings of soldiers' tortured daily existence is impressive.
Very interesting museum, lots of information about the local culture, famous people and popular myths. Most of the signs are written in both spanish and english.
Even though the museum is about the traditions and legends of the country, I wish there was more information about the actual prison itself. Definitely worth the 50c or so entry fee, if you’re in León I recommend giving this place a visit.
traixvii — Google review
Not that much content, but it is the place they imprisoned and tortured recent Revolution advocates; wall painting illustrate.
John Nesbit — Google review
Pretty well explained in English, although the explanation is a bit long for each legend. I thought the models were creative and definitely told the stories. I think using the old prison walls as a "canvas" for the drawings of how daily life was for the tortured soldiers.
Elizabeth Maw — Google review
To say this museum changed our lives is an understatement. It was great from start to finish. The owner (Wilbur) is passionate, kind and welcoming - he was there to answer any questions and help throughout our entire experience, all of which came with a lovely smile. Each part of the museum is different, captivating and taught us an interesting part of Nicaragua’s culture. We smiled the whole time and for the rest of the day following this experience. Please go to preserve this absolute iconic place.

From what I’ve researched this museum looks great, however after 3 tries on different days & times, it was never open despite the hours posted on the front door. Maybe we just came during an off week compared to the other reviews - as we were leaving Leon noticed them painting, so hopefully it resumes regular hours soon.
If anyone does attend, I’m seeing if you would be willing to send pictures of the guide as well as each of the 14 exhibits. I came for research and am very sad to be leaving without getting to visit. Please let me know - thank you!

Very cool and unique museum in the heart of Leon. We were the only ones there when we went and we got a booklet in English to explain everything which was nice. Lots of English explanations by the art as well to fully understand the cool legends of Leon. Highly recommend, it was one of my fav things to do in the city! Cheap entrance fee

It's quite disorganized, and many of the exhibits seem to need to be deteriorated or not well maintained. The staff is a bright point. They are very friendly and helpful. It seems like some work is currently being done on the place so it might be getting better.

Me and my friend absolutely loved this museum, and what can say, what an experience. An unexpected gem that really brightened our day. There is so much to learn about all the quirky myths and legends of the area and the models and figurines are brilliant (somewhat a little scary haha). It's set in an old prison and you get to walk around the high perimeter like the guards once did. Wilbur who runs the museum is brilliant, friendly and so helpful. What a great and funny day out for such a small price of 50 Cordobas. Would happily return. See it for yourself and enjoy!

Great experience! Good place to learn about Nicaragua's history and have a taste of the traditions and culture. I recommend to ask for a tour guide, it's more interesting. For those who knows what Gigantona is, here you can find the biggest one in Nic.
Grethel Pavon (Gretch) — Google review
The enthusiasm and professionalism of our two young guides was inspirational. They brought to life the tired exhibits, most of which are decrepit and in dire need of restoration. Well worth the time to visit, especially the opportunity to learn about the local folklore and myths.

Knowledgeable guide and interesting exhibits in the former prison turned local musem of history and legends. The displays are quite dusty amateutish and are in varying stages of disrepair. The catwalk around the prison feels great. Apart from seeing the surrounding areas and the museum, you can also see the dirty laundy (litetally) of the neighboring residents.
Eric Martinez PH — Google review
Converted from an old prison. Paid C$50 for the entrance. An English speaking guide explained this museum about its sad and cruel history. On the other hand, the museum had many figures telling some legendary stories of the country.
The Calvary Church, also known as the Sweet Name of Jesus Catholic Church, is a beloved religious site in Leon, distinct from the famous Cathedral. Constructed during the 18th century, this church boasts a vibrant and diverse façade that catches the eye even from a distance amidst the backdrop of volcanos. The exterior panels are adorned with biblical scenes while intricate murals can be found inside as one approaches the ornate altar.
It one of the most colorful church in town, so many details to see, it's quite high and you get a really nice view of the city, and the history it's super interesting

Cerro Negro is an active volcano in Leon that offers moderate to challenging hikes and a unique activity known as volcano boarding. This involves sitting on a board and sliding down the summit of the volcano after climbing it on foot. Other activities in Leon include sandboarding, surfing at Poneloya, or visiting the Natural Reserve of the Islands Juan Venado for those seeking more extreme adventures.
The youngest active volcano in Central America! I'm glad to have experienced volcano boarding here, it was exhilarating! Went here with a local guide, who is an independent contractor with a group tour that I booked. It's great that we went early in the morning so we had the whole volcano to ourselves and avoided the scorching sun. The hike up to the peak is about 45 mins, rewarding you with cool breeze and amazing view. Descending down the slope with the board takes a few seconds to few minutes. An experience of a lifetime that is worth doing again! :)
Arlene Sadcopen — Google review
Beautiful volcano, red iron, white manganese and yellow sulfur deposits. The hike is a medium difficultly up. Heavy winds and can take an hour. The actual boarding itself is 300 meters up and takes less than a minute to get down.
When I went down it was like two hills. The first was slow and meh but the second was more inclined and I ended up toppling over. All good though. Tours can be $25-30 and require minimum of 2 people. I went with "Via a Via." A guy took pictures the whole time because it's hard to record as you're going down. It also included free pickup from hotel, free shirt, and free drink. I even bought a bandana for 70Lempiras or $2USD. You must bring a bandana!
Other than that. Have fun and enjoy the adrenaline.
Leonard — Google review
The trek up is not difficult and took more than half an hour. Great view at the top of the volcano. Extremely windy at the top. Waiting for sunset was the icing on the cake. Beautiful panoramic view. Going down the volcano was a totally new experience, it took about 10-15 minutes to glide down the moving, sliding volcanic pebbles. It was not easy and some really enjoyed the descent

A few of us went volcano boarding a few years ago, and even if had just gone for the hike and views, it would have been spectacular. Boarding itself was great fun, but make sure you cover up as much skin as you can... and bring water!

Don’t miss this adventure! We had a great time enjoying the beautiful views! The hike up is fairly easy and takes about +/- 30 minutes. Coming down is much quicker;)
Nelson and Megan Garcete — Google review
It is worth the drive to head up to and to check out. We had a guide to help us go up to the volcano. It’s a scary experience, because the higher you go, the windier it gets, and the trail gets alittle steep, but one you are on top of the volcano it’s all good.
I did not realize it was still active (I’m ignorant...);because some steam was coming out from the volcano, and it felt hot too.
Once on top you get a great view all around Nicaragua. And we got to watch the sunset, and sled down afterwards!
Great experience!
Jay H — Google review
Volcano boarding is of course the main reason people come and I did it too but volcano itself is much more attractive than volcano boarding. Hiking up isn't hard even with the board. On the top, the view is amazing and you can feel the heat if you touch the surface. Try to dig just a little bit. You can see steam coming out of it.
León Viejo is a historical site in Nicaragua that features the remnants of a 1500s Spanish colonial city that was destroyed by volcanic eruptions. Visitors can book tours to explore the ruins and learn about the history of the old city through well-marked plaques in both English and Spanish. In addition, there are three small museums on site which are included in the entrance fee of $5 for foreign tourists.
Amazing place if you are even a little bit interested in history, it is a fairly new excavation as it was only rediscovered in 1967 (there are still new excavations taking place).
The $5 (180c) entrance fee also includes a guide that shows you around and explains all of the ruins. All of the signs are written in spanish, our guide was incredible and really nice and she also tried her best in English as we spoke very little spanish and she had no problem using our translator to help us out a bit. Highly recommend.

Very interesting stop. It was out of the way of many other tourist stops but definitely worth the detour. Our tour guide was very informative and eager to tell us the story of the ruins (note that she only spoke Spanish, so if you don't speak Spanish you might not get as much from the tour). There was a small museum that we viewed before going to see the ruins. The tour took about 75 minutes. Definitely recommend!

The Santiago of Managua Cathedral, built in 1920 by a Belgian architect, is a neoclassical structure that suffered damage from an earthquake in 1972. Currently undergoing restoration, the exterior facade features stone angels and radiates golden light while the interior remains off-limits and empty. The cathedral is considered a poignant symbol of the city's lack of centralized focus.
Very old and historic church. Built on a tectonic plate so it will not be restored. Cool site to visit while in Managua.

It is a beautiful cathedral, but falling apart and appears to be long ignored. It’s blocked off on some sides so you cannot see it, such as the angle from the National Palace.

Old dilapidated church that has not been touched for decades. All restorations have been limited to the outside and surrounding area as church is now to weak from several earthquakes and shellings during the war. More of a symbol of Managua you can see rather than experience. You can only see a glimpse of the inside.

It's OK to look at from the outside but it is very damaged and you can't go inside. I believe they have not fixed it since it was damaged in the earthquake in the early seventies. I wish they would fix it up and make it look really nice so tourists can see the beauty of the old cathedral in downtown Managua

The Masaya Volcano National Park is a popular destination with active volcanoes, craters, and lava-formed tunnels. This park is located in Leon, known for its volcanic features and intellectual reputation due to the presence of museums and art galleries. The park's craters are considered as the gates of hell by Spaniards, with five craters comprising two volcanoes - Masaya and Nindiri. Among them, Crater Santiago remains highly active with red-hot lava bubbling inside.
The Masaya Volcano is an active caldera located in a national park. It has an interior lava lake that stands over 2,000 ft high. A visit to this volcano at night is a must-see experience, as visitors can witness the boiling lava beneath them. Another attraction near Masaya Volcano is the Laguna de Apoyo, which is a volcanic lake filled with warm mineral water.
We'll worth the effort. We used the organised tour from Granada for 20$ but you can get them from 18 to 22$. The views are stunning is the sky is clear and you will see lava once it's dark.
Michael Messenger — Google review
Tips: 1. Focus on the view per se instead of focusing on pushing others for a better view ; 2. Check weather forecast ahead, avoid windy days; 3. No flash photo nor yelling false lava alarm please.

To visit this place you must be on a tour or by car.
I saw information online that you can take a shuttle bus up from the entrance, so I headed there by local bus but could not get in.
However, with the help of kind local people, we were able to visit the site safely. Thank you so much.

While visiting the neighboring country of Costa Rica, we decided to take a tour of the Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua. This was our fist time visiting a live volcano and it was definitely a sight to be seen. It was a great experience even just driving up to it and seeing all the lava rocks. Once we got to the top, it was an impressive view seeing all the lava jumping. Legend has it that this volcano is one of the gate ways to hell and that was a chilling experience in itself. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

beautiful accessible experience.
unfortunately i wasn't lucky to see the real beauty of this place since that day it was steamy and time wasn't right, but still I could feel the power and heat, and even see bits of the lava pool down below.
I love to hike, but the best part of this volcano is that it accessible for everyone. Just park right there, at the top, and look in the crater.
There is also a short hike to the top park of you want to see it from a higher point.
Lan Ki — Google review
So this is definitely not worth the 10 dollars entrance you’ve got to pay after 4:30pm. You are not allowed to walk up, so you have to get by car up the road which brings you to a big parking lot. There you can see some lava, but that’s it. You can walk a little bit up to two mirador points, which are not too impressive. Everything -especially during sunset-nightfall- is super crowded. Most of the impressive pictures are taken with drones/from the air, so don’t expect to see something similar. Only if you really want to see a little bit of lava (if you manage to get a sneak peek between the crowds), and are not looking for a nice walk/hike, you can go. Otherwise would not recommend.
In short: basically it comes down to a very touristy and overpriced sightseeing.
Anton Hoynck Van Papendrecht — Google review
Amazing!! Definitely want to arrive around 5pm, so you can see the lava at sunset, but still arrive early enough to snap a few amazing photos!

My recent visit to Masya Volcano was truly awe-inspiring. The moment I arrived, I was captivated by the raw beauty and power of the volcano. The knowledgeable guides shared fascinating insights, and witnessing a volcanic eruption was an unforgettable spectacle. Safety measures were top-notch, and the surrounding landscape added to the surreal atmosphere. With excellent facilities and a chance to witness nature's fury firsthand, Masaya Volcano is a must-visit for anyone seeking a remarkable adventure in Nicaragua.

Watching the sunset at Masaya Volcano was a highlight of our 2 week Nicaraguan vacation We arrived around 4:00 pm and spent some time looking at the lava fields on the drive up. We chucked on the volcano and could see a little stream of lava in the central vent. Then we hiked up to to view the city of Managua as well. As the sun was setting we headed back to view the volcano after dark. The view was spectacular. Well worth a trip

Here's what to know: We didn't use a tour guide so we made a couple mistakes.
1. Get there after 430pm if ypu want the night show. They won't sell entrance tickets for a night visit until that time. if you are early, you meet to wait.
2. Don't expect bubbling Lava. It's just a red glow but still pretty neat!
3. Tickets are 10 USD per foreigner
4. Get there before sunset to enjoy some of the other views there are.
5. There are drinks and snacks at the museum but not at the volcano. I forgot to bring water...
6. You won't see much red glow until it's pretty dark outside.
8. It's worth the visit for sure

Top tip; don't need a tour!
You can easily drive yourself (if you have a car, no 4x4 needed) or get a taxi. We visited the volcano from Granada and can recommend doing this by sunset.
The premises offer a few hikes but the main attraction is certainly the lava crater.
Maurice ten Hengel — Google review
Great experience and a must visit when you are in Nica.
Pro tip: No tour is needed. You only need a transport to get to the park and to the top. Get a taxi and be there at around 5 p.m. That gives you ca. 1 hour for the info point. The entrance fee is 10 US$ per person at night (5 US$ during the day). There is plenty of info about the volcano on the www, so do some research in advance and you do not need a guide.
It may happen that depending on the volcano activity you will be allowed to spend only 10 minutes on the top - the gases produced are toxic. You can check this prior to your visit.
The best time for watching the lava is after the sun sets, hence there is no need to be the first on top. Ascend to the volcano from the info point after 6:30 p.m.
Johannes Mirtschink — Google review
Amazing volcano with beautiful views. Can almost hike the circumference. There are 2 volcanoes that are walking distance that’s less visited. A must see when you are Mangua.

Pretty cool thing to see! The museum is really cool for a shall place. The hike up to the top is worth it. It's secure so even kids can do it safely. Great view. Wish we could have done more of a hike up the nearby mountain but there was extra cost for that (seriously?). They do have a tour to go on horse but didn't come dressed for that.

Natural History Museums
Many people avoid the museum Museo Volcán Masaya due to poor signage or their rush to reach the nearby volcano. However, it is recommended to visit the museum before heading to the volcano, as it provides a comprehensive overview of the area and its landmarks. Spending around 10-15 minutes browsing through its exhibits can give visitors a clear understanding of what they will encounter at the volcano site.
What experience!!! Soo cool, watch the sunset, and look at Magma!!! We went at 4 perfect timing before all the crazy line up! 10usd to enter after 430 for the sunset. And night visuals of the volcano Masaya.
I'm going to tell you, get there at 4pm with your rental car, wait in line until 430 open pay the 10usd per person my daughter who was 6 was free. Hit it up the Museum get the information about the Giant volcano, last huge major eruption I think he said 3,000 years ago, and last lava flow was 1970's.There is a "bat" cave inside the museum with real bats!! Back in 1550's the Spaniards came put up a cross thinking it was the gates to hell.
The aboriginals, prior to that thought, there was a magic Hag who used to live there and told the tribes to sacrifice their maidens and children (of course)
Such a cool experience for our family!
A must see place!!!

Lot of people skip the museum either because it is not marked very well or they are rushing to the volcano. The Guadalupe Church, located on Calle la Calzada near Nicaragua Lake, holds historic significance as it was strategically positioned at the entrance of the town during colonial times. While its original architecture was lost due to a fire, it has since been rebuilt with a new design. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views from the top of its tower and a lovely little park in front of this beautiful architectural marvel.

Fantastic cigar factory in Granada, highly recommend going and rolling your own cigar!
We went to both cigar factories Dona Elba and Mombacho and while Dona Elba is a traditional family business you can see that Mombacho has specialized in high end cigars and this also includes their tour.
The guide Brian did a wonderful job explaining in great English the past of the business and the way tobacco is grown and used for cigars and how you can tell differences.
He took us through the wonderful mansion where the factory is located and my boyfriend and I also rolled our own cigar with the help of the local staff who were super helpful!
Every detail in their production process is ensuring everything is perfect which is great to witness.
I highly recommend going!!
A tour incl your own cigar is 10$ (Dona Elba is 8$) and takes about 1.5h

We had an interesting and unique experience doing a tour here, learning about the production and procees it takes to make a quality cigar. Nuvia gave as a tour around and showed us the entire process and gave us a lot of information about cigar making and about Nicaragua. Claudio is truly a master, with the mind and spirit of an atelier. It was a gift to experience his passion and joy of cigar making and smoking. With him, Mombacho has a very bright future. The property is beautiful and the cigars were fantastic. Just like their sign says, a "best kept secret."

$10 per person for a tour of the entire cigar rolling process, the experience of rolling your own cigar and taking the cigar home as a souvenir! You can’t beat that!
The Mombacho Cigar organization has worked extremely hard for their good name and certification and it shows. They truly care about the customer and making the perfect cigar. Their attention to detail, and their customer service is unmatched!
Our tour guide Brian was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the organization. We truly enjoyed his company, and his insight during our experience at Mombacho! There wasn’t a question that we asked that he couldn’t answer!
Walking around Granada we saw many organizations that would allow you to roll your own cigar, but they do not offer a tour, OR have one of the highest cigar rankings in Nicaragua!
If you are in the Masaya / Granada area, and even if you’re not a smoker (like myself), we HIGHLY recommend this tour!

Great place to learn first steps about how to make cigars while also preparing your first own cigar.
Bryan the tour guide was super nice! His english is really good. He explained everything about Mombacho cigars, the building and factory process.
It takes some time if you want to roll your own cigar but it’s well integrated in the tour. E.g. while the cigars need to be pressed for 20min you continue the tour. The entire tour takes about 90min.

The ChocoMuseo in Granada, Nicaragua is a must-visit destination for families with children. It features an interactive 'beans to bar' workshop where visitors can learn how to roast and grind cocoa beans and create their own chocolate bars. The museum tour was cute. Pretty quick and basic, but it was informative and the guide was fun.
The guide is also the salesperson for the gift shop. They offer the tour for free, and ask you to buy stuff. Sounds reasonable, right?
Except that all the cacao and chocolate we bought was the worst cacao and chocolate I have ever tasted. Literally, the worst. All of it was burnt. It's the first time I've tasted burnt cacao and chocolate like this. It's not a good taste, there is no desire to eat any of it. And it wasn't isolated to one item - we bought 4 different items, all of it the same. You can definitely get better cacao/chocolate elsewhere, don't buy it from this gimmicky shop.

I’ve been on a couple of chocolate tours in and out of Nicaragua. I wouldn’t say this was the best, or most interesting one, but it was still enjoyable. The best part was obviously sampling some of the things they had in the grift shop. We absolutely loved their chocolate tea, and their brownies were so good!
We also visit them to go swimming in their pool on hot days. The pool was absolutely filthy, so as a guest I’m not sure how the hotel is. But the chocolate tour was okay. I don’t think I would pay to do it again though.
Maegan Hendrix — Google review
I visited the Chocolate Museum simply for a chocolate fix, although there are multiple activities one may sign up to do if you wish to actively participate in the process of making chocolate yourself.
I stopped in on a weekday late morning. There was no waiting to be seated to order drinks or desserts.
I ordered a Willy Wonka bowl for $8 that was much larger than I expected.. fruit on bottom; banana, watermelon, and pineapple with chocolate brownie and ice cream on top drizzled with chocolate. Whoa, it was a lot!
The chocolate was delicious, which was mostly all I was interested in eating along with some banana for variety.
We also sampled the chocolate martini (yum) and a chocolate crepe. The crepe was non-traditional and a bit crunchy. The chocolate itself was very good, but it was not the crepe fix we were looking for.
Altogether, I think it's a fun adventure where you will find the chocolate fix you crave and possibly learn a thing or two if you sign up for the full experience.

Let me start with how beautiful and amazing this place was! Antonio, our tour guide and one of the talented chocolate makers, showed us every step of the chocolate making process. From learning when the plants are ready to harvest to getting a feel for the work those before us had to put in to make things out of them, it was an experience I recommend to everyone who visits granada. There is so much to do and see, but this place was an absolute masterpiece. Also, they have samples!!! My family, 2 kids, my spouse and I, and his parents really enjoyed all Antonio and the chocolate museum had to offer. I do believe we will be coming back in the future, if only for the chance to say hello again and enjoy their delightful rum. They also had tea, brownies, and different amounts of chocolate in each of the sweets, so you are sure to find something you like. 10/10!

Had a chocolate making class with Brandon and bought some chocolate. The class was fun. Brandon was very knowledgeable and energetic. Learned a lot about chocolate. Probably worth $25. I also bought some chocolate which strangely was not very good. The bars were all chrystalized and blooming (cocoa butter separated from the chocolate) I ended up just melting them in some milk for rather expensive hot chocolate. My guess is they were sitting on the shelf for way too long. The Nico tella was ok but very expensive and didn’t taste like the sample. Again probably too long on the shelf. Overall, the class was fun but I wouldn’t buy anything from the shop. Very poor quality and way overpriced.

We were limited for time so could only do the short 'free (tip-based) tour' and it was EXCELLENT. So informative, interesting and fun. We have a fair level of Spanish so opted to have the tour in Spanish. Our guide, Yesareli, spoke so clearly for us which meant we were able to understand everything. She made it great fun with lots of hands on interaction. We tasted/tried a whole range of stuff at the end; chocolate drinks, nibs, body creams etc. We really enjoyed this 20 minute experience and would highly recommend.

I have been to many cacao/ chocolate museums around the world. I certainly have to see that although not the best one I have been it was still a fun experience. We took what the called the “express tour” which was 45 min were we ended up making our own bars of chocolate 🍫. The staff were nice, even tough some seemed a bit tired and ready to go home. I would still recommend it to anyone visiting Granada specially with younger familiy members. 👍🏼

Few minutes later the waiter brought me instant coffee. I told him it's not organic coffee and he insisted it was. Then I asked him to bring me the bag from where this coffee was made. He brought a real coffee. I asked him to smell and see if my coffee seems different from the one he brought. Finally he agreed to make me a new coffee. It was a real deal. Heads up as you may be tricked too.

What might have been an institution worthy of one's support is yet another awful example of an organization which has embraced discrimination in all its ugly forms by charging those of foreign origin unconscionably high entry fees. Even students are not spared the despicable treatment; I went with some fellow student colleagues and they wouldn't dare treat us equally and fairly. I and a friend with "whiter" skin were subjected to outrageous questioning regarding our national origin and sought to be slapped with entrance fees over 1,500% higher than those of our colleagues. Such outrageousness cannot be condoned.

Hotel Plaza Colón is an elegant and sophisticated colonial-style hotel located in the heart of Granada, Nicaragua. It boasts a bar, a café and an outdoor pool, offering guests comfort and relaxation during their stay. The neocolonial mansion-turned-hotel is adorned with contemporary artwork by prominent Nicaraguan artists, blending traditional and modern styles to create a unique ambiance throughout the property.
Location is fabulous
- beautiful colonial hotel in the heart of Granada. Doesn’t get any better than this
- Rooms are beautiful - make sure to upgrade to a balcony room overlooking the square and facing the cathedral (yes the carriage horses stink and it can be a bit noisy in the early morning but worth the upgrade). The place becomes alive by 8am.
- Beautiful clean and warm pool.
- Breakfast has lots of choices. For vegans it’s toast, sometimes avocado, fruit & juice and beans & rice. You can also ask for just beans - they are accommodating.
- Beds are large and comfortable - however, after 3 bashes & leg bruises, we had to prop pillows at the footboard to stop bashing our legs into them.
- laundry service fast and inexpensive
- Pillows are foam and hard as a rocks. Try the sham ones.
- Safe and yummy Nicaraguan coffee in the room.
- Wifi is very poor! A/C is good.
- TV with CNN, BBC & Fox in English.
- Bar downstairs is excellent and prices are reasonable.
- Water jug in hallway as you can’t drink the water.
- A few irritants but highly recommend.

This was our favorite hotel in our trip to Central America...until tonight. The beds are comfortable, the accommodations are clean and very nice, with everything you could want. The food is also great, and the staff is kind and very helpful. Everything was perfect for our first night. The problem came on our second night. We had a 6:00 am flight, so we decided to go to bed early at 8:00 pm. It is now 1:00 am and we have not been able to sleep for a single second, all because of extremely loud music coming from a bar or restaurant, and this is happening on a Thursday night. We could possibly deal with the music, but throughout every song that is played, the music stops about once every minute for some guy to yell names through a microphone. I wish that I could find out what restaurant or bar this was coming from so that I could leave them a one-star review. If you're looking for a hotel to sleep, this place might not be good for you.

Visited March 2024.
A classy, comfortable oasis in the heart of Granada. The hotel is sumptuous with tasteful accommodation, internal courtyards and courtyard pool that takes you away from the hustle of the main Cathedral square outside.
Ideally located being only a short amble to the lake shore and all of this fabulous city's attractions and tourist sights.
Our room was spacious with a balcony that could easily double as a dancefloor, however, the twin rocking chairs hit the spot.
Breakfast included
Totally wonderful.

The perfect getaway in Granada!! Not only the hotel is just in front the Parque Central, but it's also a really nice, colonial style, place to stay. Staff was really kind, awesome customer service and comfortable rooms with all the amenities you could need. Clean areas, modern features that bend with the colonial architecture and medium size pool in the center area. Breakfast included with 4+ options and 24/7 private secure parking. Oh yeah, and also they washed my car while we were there. Kudos to them for that!

Very comfortable, old mansion that was converted some years ago into a very nice hotel. The place maintained it colonial vibe but is updated with more modern features for travelers. The staff was beyond helpful! We had a flat tire on one of our scooters, and Victor, the man at the front desk, went out and repaired it himself when I repair man didn't show up. Victor is AMAZING!! The whole staff if really great. Located right in the middle of everything, so it's very easy to walk everywhere.

Beautiful hotel with stunning views of the cathedral, a tranquil pool, clean rooms, delicious breakfast, and wonderful people who work there. When my original tour company canceled, Victor and Carlos helped me book last minute tours to see the volcanoes and the isletas so that I didn’t miss anything on my short trip. I can’t recommend this hotel enough!

I stayed three weeks at the Hotel Plaza Colon to study Spanish and Nicaraguan culture. This hotel was my home away from home and was lovely in every way. It was impeccably clean and comfortable and in a perfect central and safe location. The Catholic Church Cathedral of Granada is a newly built structure commissioned by Priest Silvestre Alvarez and designed by Italian architect Andres Zappata. Its eclectic style combines classic arcade, renaissance cupolas, ogive, and half-point arcs. The cathedral's colorful interior and nighttime lights make it a symbol of the city. Visitors can climb to the top for scenic views of Granada and capture great overall pictures of the city.
Too be honest we didn’t enter to the inside of the church. But for outside it a certainly beautiful, being able to apprentice the Colonia architecture with such a magnificent church ⛪️. I would definitely recommend to at least take a look at it form the outside if you are in Granada. 👍🏼👍🏼
Laj Ramed — Google review
You can’t miss this Cathedral in Granada. Considering that most of the city is flat, this building stands out easily amongst the other structures. Towering far above all of it, visible from kilometres around, are the distinctive yellow and white bell towers and dome of the Catedral de Granada.
There’s been a church here since the late 16th century, but, along with other key sites in the city, it suffered at the hands of raiders in the centuries since. In 1856, the church was destroyed at the behest of William Walker}. Later in the century, rebuilding began but continued only fitfully due to lack of funding. The current version that you see now as largely complete by about 1915.
The inside is not the most ornate of the old city’s Catholic cathedrals. In fact, it’s relatively sparsely decorated. But what it lacks in crammed-to-the-rafters lavishness it makes up for in scale and a sense of space and calm. The nave is expansive and spacious.
The main altar piece is a strikingly beautiful arrangement of a statue of Mary surrounded by silver and backed by bright blue mosaic tiles. Spaced around the interior are a number of statues depicting religious figures and other religious artwork. And off to one side is a small but pretty little white chapel.
Well worth visiting and allow at least 30 minutes to explore the inside and outside.

30 cordobas to climb to the top tower. Beautiful church right infront of a plaza where you can find goods manufactured in Granada. The church is still used for mass, ps dont ring the bell as that is the sound of mass initiating.

The staff is not friendly, unwelcoming. You can climb up to get views of the city from the top of the cathedral; it is a nice, quick stop as you're walking around the main park.

The views are excellent and you'll end up getting some great overall pics of the city.
The cathedral itself is beautiful so I strongly recommend visiting!
Mombacho is a volcanic peak towering at 4,409 feet that boasts a cloud forest and two hiking trails around the crater. Additionally, there is a dwarf forest to explore. Visitors can enjoy numerous activities such as taking a boat tour to Las Isletas, going on a bike ride or horseback trek to Mapache, doing canopy tours on Mombacho volcano or visiting handicraft centers in Masaya.
really great place, can highly recommend to go there. But here are some adivces
You can only entry the park between 7-10 am. Later it is not possible to walk to the top anymore. It’s 5 km to the top that take you about 1.5 hours by walking. It is really steep!
You can also go with a truck, don’t know if that’s also possible after 10.
The entry without a guide is 400 c.
At the top it’s a lot colder.

As usual prices from the internet are different from reality once on the spot.
So in August 2022 prices for foreigners are 5$ for entrance + 2$ for the maintenance of the tracks. That's only if you want to do the easy track, you have two other options where you'll have to pay a compulsory guide.
Then you have yo pay an additional 20$ to go up and down. However on their website it was clearly said that the shuttle was 2$ one way (which feels more like a normal price considering it's a 20 mins ride)
So...you'll have to pay $27 for a hike that lasts one hour. Not worth it considering it's not the best view around.
Locals pay less for the transportation, which is stupid, because it's only transportation and it shouldn't be more expensive for us. I understand for entrance and other fees that locals pay less but here. Any way we just didn't go.
Keep going like this and you'll have nobody on your volcano 👍
Laurent Henry — Google review
Very nice place to go. The weather is magnigicient (24°C) you can feel the pure air and also the sulfur in some areas because the volcano it is still active. If you are in good shape you could visit The Puma way. It is a 4 km tour but if you are not in shape, don't go that way, take the regular way which is a 1 km tour.

Amazing place to visit; I recommend a lot this place full of adventure
Deiby GO — Google review
Rip Off. Ridiculously overpriced. Foreigners pay 5 dollars at the entrance. For each track (3 of them) you pay again. 2 of them require a guide which in English of course is more than in Spanish. Taking a shuttle is 20(!!!) dollars for one person. Have been in Asia and everything from Mexico to Nicaragua but this is the biggest scam of all. Just did the crater trail but nothing special at all. Do yourself and spend this money somewhere else.

Excellent outdoor experience. A must if you are visiting Nicaragua. Great photography place. They also offer night trails with experts and lodging. Service truck can take you from the base to the top, alternatively you can hike your way up. The Biological Station is rustic. Meals are limited at the top. If your doing the Puma trails go prepared with plenty of drinks and snacks. Eco style bathrooms. Avoid the raining season. Not infant friendly.
MM CR — Google review
This is a great hike with amazing views at the top. We walked from the entrance at the parking lot at the bottom and it took about 2 hours to get to the trailheads at the top. Walking costs $2 and getting a 4x4 costs $20. Park entrance is $5. The walk to the top is extremely steep (straight up the volcano) but do-able. Halfway down, at the cafe, we hopped on a shuttle and they brought us down.
The Islets of Granada is a group of 365 volcanic islets located off the coast of Granada. These serene islands are home to private residences and tourist accommodations, making it an attractive destination for travelers. Visitors can take a boat tour to explore the different islands and learn about their unique history and ownership. One notable island was purchased by a veterinarian for the local monkey population to live in. The tours offer opportunities to observe the local wildlife, with monkeys occasionally boarding boats as one such experience.
A very nice boat ride to the isles of Granada lake.

Beautiful islands off the coast of Granada. We took a boat tour to see the different islands and it is definitely recommended if you are anywhere near. Our favorite island was the one that a Veterinarian bought a long time ago in order for the local monkey population to live in. We had ten days of surf lessons with Brett and it was awesome! Actually it was much more then surfing. We had such a great time with him, and will definitely recommend anyone who interest in learning to surf to contact Brett.

I've had many surf lessons in many locations and Morrie was by far the best. His technique made a huge change in my ability to stand up. He's positive and has lots of information about the ocean. We had a lesson and then rented boards for a week. It was affordable and a wicked good time!
Marie-Helene Robin — Google review
My partner and I took a lesson with Morrie and it was excellent. The start was an introduction of how the ocean creates waves and how to be safe. We then warmed up and practiced our stance. When we were ready we headed in to the water to catch some fun waves! Thanks for a great afternoon and I highly recommend to grab a lesson with Morrie!
Samantha Steel — Google review
Absolutely loved meeting Morrie today and learning how to surf. The first hour was really valuable getting to know about waves / rips and where best to catch waves for a beginner. Out on the board Morrie was by far the best instructor out there. He consistently got us in the best spot to catch waves which was epic. Can't recommend enough! 🤙🤙

Me and my girlfriend are what you can call advanced beginners and we came to Popoyo to work on our skills. Morrie first gave another basic lesson to make sure we knew what we were doing once we were getting into more serious waves. We really enjoyed this lesson and were amazed by the theory part as well. A couple of days later he took us further into the bay and we had a superb time!! It was amazing be in the Pacific at sunset riding waves with him!! If you go to Popoyo, you do want to surf. If you want to become a better surfer, you have to go with Morrie!
Martijn Frusch — Google review
I took one surf lesson with Morrie and I was able to dial in on my surfing more than I have with any other surf lesson I've taken in the past. He doesn't just show you what to do, but makes you understand what each different type of wave is doing and how to respond to the ocean. Doggos and the best prices on the beach were a big plus!
Caitlin Long — Google review
This was simply phenomenal. Morrie conveyed to us the wisdom of the ocean, along with all the practical experience to begin our journey of mastering the waves. It was both philosophical and highly tactical. The instructions were immediately usable and we got great results. There was even a beautiful moment between my girlfriend and I surfing a wave into shore together. Synchronized surfing! It was truly a beautiful experience to remember.
Alex Winn — Google review
Today had my first ever surf lesson with Morrie and managed not only to stand on the board but even got a glimpje of that good feeling of riding a wave! For 99% thanks to Morrie, he is a great teacher who helps you understand the why and how behind surfing and what you should do to get up and stand on your board. Thanks man!
Iglesia La Merced is a 1534 church in Granada that offers visitors the opportunity to climb up its spiral staircase to the bell tower and enjoy panoramic views. While there are many things to do in Granada, such as admiring colorful buildings and walking along the lakefront, it is suggested that tourists allocate most of their time exploring attractions outside of the city. One must-see activity is visiting Masaya Volcano at night to witness lava boiling beneath them.
If you are in Granada, you should definitely pass by. The church is architecture of the church is amazing. For 1 cordoba, you can go up to the top of the bell tower. Which give amazing views of Granada. (The stairs to go up are very narrow and steep). But once you are at the top, the pictures are great!
