How long is the drive from Oaxaca to Puebla?
The direct drive from Oaxaca to Puebla is 210 mi (338 km), and should have a drive time of 3 hrs 51 mins in normal traffic.
If you’re going on a road trip from Oaxaca to Puebla, we did the research for you and compiled some great stops along the way — with top places to visit like A San Antonio Arrazola and El Llano, or the ever-popular EX CONVENTO CUILAPAM DE GUERRERO.
The top stops along the way from Oaxaca to Puebla (with short detours) are Monte Albán, Africam Safari, and Teleférico de Orizaba. Other popular stops include Museo de Arte Prehispánico de México Rufino Tamayo, Palacio de Hierro, and National Puppet Museum.
Magnificent! This place is hauntingly beautiful. It’s such a calm and quiet place and ideal for reflection. A photographers dream in almost any light. It’s like $75 pesos per person and well worth it to see the interior. Bathrooms upstairs.

Tried to visit the convent three times between Christmas and New Years Eve 2020. I was rebuffed every time, due to closure (probably because of Covid.) the place still looks imposing, even when viewed from beyond the fence.

Interesting history. First, the Spanish conquerors tore down indigenous shrines and buildings and used the same stones and boulders to build this monetary and other Spanish buildings. President Vicente Guerrero, the first Mexican president of African descent was assassinated here by reactionary Mexicans. He was progressive and abolished slavery during his administration.

Still closed due to pandemic. It looks lovely but can only be viewed from a distance outside the gates. Even then, there were some sticks/poles obscuring the view making it hard to get a decent photo.

It is very nice. The town is special. The attendants were NOT nice.

Gorgeous open cathedral in stunning location. Absolutely worth the trip out from Oaxaca and don’t forget to check out the archaeological site of Zaachila nearby.

This place has its own place in Mexico's history. Home to Dominican congregation in 16th century, it received two major events, first one being the shooting of Vicente Guerrero (2nd mexican president), and the second being the visit of the Pope Juan Pablo II in 1979.

Excellent place to visit while you are at Oaxaca, Mex.
Lots of history on this place.
Learned a lot about the sapotecans.
I will definitely recommend this place to visit.

It is amazing, just the architecture is beautiful and the fact that in that ex convento they shoot the second Mexican president and a few archaeological pieces do more interesting and rich the visit, it is very easy to arrive and come back in public transportation from Oaxaca city!

Great value and interesting site if you’re in the area.

The entrance was so hard to find that we thought the place was abandoned. We rode a dirt road around to the back and found a door to enter, and after wandering around the place for 30 minutes found the entrance and discovered there is a 70 pesos entrance fee (free for citizens on Sundays), so we left. Later, we found what might be the parking lot and entrance, but there is no signage.

Good experience, not a whole lot to see, seventy pesos the entrance fee. Good site for photos

A nice place to take some pictures, but I wouldn’t drive out of your way to get here unless this is really something you want to see..

The convent is ok. Not much to see inside though. Best part for me were the stones with ancient drawings.

El Llano park, situated northwest of the Santo Domingo complex in Oaxaca, features a spacious leafy garden with walking paths and beautiful flower beds. The park boasts tall palm trees and a monument dedicated to a former Mexican president. A popular spot for locals to enjoy the green space, visitors can find numerous food vendors selling snacks and various toys/balloons. Outdoor activities such as inline skating courses and judo classes are also available for enthusiasts.
My favourite park in the city of Oaxaca. Visited in October 2021, park is very clean and safe. Perfect place to go for families on the weekend. Inline skating courses, judo classes, lots of food sellers and toy/ballon sellers.

El Llano is a park favored by local families.
I enjoyed myself by watching the local people enjoy their outdoor activities.
Children play gliding on rollerblades, scooters, bikes and other toys.
Teenagers practiced a dance performance with genuine playfullness.
An enthusiastic clown climbed down from a truck to run in the park.

Nice place to hang out for a bit. Not sure if the fountains work. It would have been nice if they were though.

Nice, shady park for relaxing in the city. Trees are beautiful, but the flowers haven't been maintained lately. There were playgrounds for children, and teenagers were skateboarding while we were there today (October). The fountains were off today.
Paula Darwent — Google review
It's a great place for the kids. Good food around the park. The drought has made it a little less garden like.
Anthony Shepperdson — Google review
Once upon a time El Llano was a pretty nice clean park, now it's simply an option to spend a sort of nice afternoon on the weekends. If you live nearby and are a little lazy to go to better options then this will do. Just be warned many people walk their dogs here so seeing dogs poo will be part of the charm. Sometimes skaters, skateboarders, and rap batlles can add to what else to do, there are kiddie inflatable castles so at least younger kids have an option if they like and are not afraid to perhaps land on hard cement. There are lots of food vendors so starving is out of the question, enough said!

Lovely park where we watched a día de los muertos parade from a tree we climbed. Park has a variety of vendors, clean, lots of families.

Most toys at the playground are broken like the slide. But there's plenty of shade and room to play with a soccer ball or for your child to ride their bike.or scooter. It's very clean.

Cheating to start with. It is a horrible type of a hostel but they placed hotel instead of Hostel on the internet. We booked rooms with Air conditioning with windows. One room has Air conditioning but no window at all. Other room # 301 has window but no Air conditioner. Also light is not working. My daughter got some elergy & got rases on the skin. No room service & no have telephone in the room to call receptionist. How international tourists can stay in such hostel/hotel?
I have only one comment,
*STAY AWAY*
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME & MONEY
Nilesh Joshi — Google review
My family really enjoyed visiting this park in the evenings. Lots of locals, things for kids to do (playground, bouncy house, roller-skating, battery mini-cars). Sometimes you can hear live music there, and there are plenty of vendors selling food and wares. There is a public restroom across the street from the park at the northeast corner. We especially looked forward to the taco truck that sets up around 7:45pm on the south end of the park near the bouncy house. Best tacos we had in Oaxaca.

Basically Oaxaca City’s Central Park… surprisingly in need of repair especially the children’s playgrounds with dangerous and outdated swings and slides. This park is a great and popular destination that needs attention by the local government since it is seen by many tourists and represents Oaxaca in many ways.

Hit it 👍🏿! A park that is used by lots of locals and has some amazing eats. A little further away from the crowds makes the food better price and a little less busy. I would suggest doing a lap and seeing what you like. Most of the places that have the longer lines definitely point out the best options.

Is a healthfood store, more or less. A bit pricey but food and Drinks are good quality- had an apple mineral water and some amaranth chips. For 3 items 100.00 pesos, so not street food prices, but healthy stuff. So alright here and there

Charming museum with a broad collection of pre-Hispanic Mexican art, plus workshops & events.
Commonly called the Rufino Tamayo Museum because the famous artist bought artifacts for their artistic value and not their archeological value. I go three or four times a year if we're not having virus hysteria. The photo is of an object almost life size.

This was one of the highlights of my trip to Mexico. I believe you can't really know a country unless you study its history. This museum gave me a huge boost in my knowledge of Mexico. One of the great things about this museum, over almost any other I've visited in Mexico, is the English language printed paper guides that they provide in each room. They describe virtually every item in the museum. Actually, without them, I probably wouldn't have understood, or therefore enjoyed, the museum very much. If you want to really experiance this place pick up a guide as you enter each room and proceed via its order. I don't know if admission is always free but it was today.

Just reopened!!!! Absolutely worth the wait! Impressive and extensive collection of Mexican pre-Columbia art in a beautiful palace. Famed Rufino Tamayo collected and established the museum to house his extraordinary pieces. Gallery rooms use traditional Oaxacan colors to showcase the eternal spirit of Mexican culture.

This 17th-century church dedicated to the patron saint of Oaxaca is a beautiful place to visit. The facade is covered in ornate baroque decorations, and the interior features a sparkling pipe organ. There's also a lively plaza nearby with steps that serve as a seating area.
A beautiful, extremely ornate basilica located just a few blocks from the zocalo and definitely off the beaten path when it comes to Oaxaca. Barely any tourists here and just a few locals. Definitely worth the 10 minute walk from the main square. Entry is free and there is a museum behind the church in case you're interested in more history of the place.

A historic site located in the heart of Oaxacan Valley, Monte Albán features a complex of stone pyramids and temples on an elevated area, offering sweeping panoramic views. This Zapotec city boasts impressive ruins showcasing its rich cultural heritage including plazas and other structures.
A real unexpected find. This recently reopened counterpart to Monte Alban is smaller but also WAY less crowded at under 50 visitors per day on average. We took a taxi from downtown Oaxaca and back for 500 pesos, the site itself is admission free. Ride up takes about 30 minutes. The site has great views, good signage and is very relaxed without the vendors and tour groups. If you have some time this is a really nice morning spent off the beaten track.

Very nice archeological site worth visiting! Not many people are there and entrance is free. Best way to get there is to take a colectivo from downtown ("red taxi", 10 M$ per person) to Santa Maria and walk up the hill where the ruins are. It's open on Saturday and Sunday and due to covid some areas are still closed unnecessarily, therefore only 4*

Beautiful ruins. Many tourists go to Monte Alban because it is in the tour books. Atzompa was recommended to us as there are no crowds. Many steps to go up to reach the ruins and you are around 6000'-7000' up. So take your time as the air is a bit thinner. No cost to enter.

Greg Eversoll — Google review
Getting here is the main obstacle for some. Take a taxi to Santa Maria Atzompa and then from the village take a moto taxi to the site. Once you register with the guard, you have the place to yourself. The site was part of Greater Monte Alban and was built for several wealthy families and to keep a watch on the Etla Valley for intruders. Well signed in Spanish and English. When you are done start walking back down the hill and within 15 minutes we came across several taxis and mototaxis to take us back. Easy to do and well worth the experience.

Small neglected museum - quick to walk through.
The museum is housed in a section of "Ex-convento del Carmen" - a courtyard and 3 attached rooms. The old convent is much larger than this - the other side can be visited for free and is in a better state of repair.
In my opinion, it should be considered to merge this museum with another, as the current space could be repurposed for other activities. It appears that the museum is not well-visited, as I was the only one there on a Saturday. Alternatively, the museum could be refurbished by expanding its size, providing WiFi, and implementing a system of barcodes that link to a website with audio narrations and additional information in multiple languages (which can easily be achieved using automatic translation).
Admission is 70 pesos. However, if you're interested in seeing similar ceramics etc, I recommend checking out Museo Amparo in Puebla. It's a much larger and better-presented museum that is free to visit.

It has a very rich collection of animals, especially cats, including white tigers and lions. The bears were huge! Yes, the space is quite small, but the management did a quite good job with building several layers of platforms and passages, practically expanding the available space vertically so that the animals can run around as well as up and down. They let the chickens, ducks, peacocks, and pheasants freely roam around. The spaces of the primates and herbivores (especially bisons) should be bigger though, and I hope the management will have the chance to expand the area or downsize the inventory of animals by donating some of them to other zoos, to open up some space. Nevertheless, the animals all looked healthy and content. There was one rather young-looking tiger confined in a somewhat small cage, separate from others (probably to prevent aggression by the alphas). It looked somewhat scared. I lowered myself to its level and tried cheering. After a short while it got up and started going up and down the cage, scuffing against the bars and chuffing, which is a sign of affection tigers show. It was feeding time when I was about to leave, and I can say all the animals are generously fed.The place was overall clean. It is obvious that the place is running on a low budget. I hope the owners/management will be even more successful, for the sake of both themselves as well as the well-being of the animals. In short, I had a very good experience.

Awesome views! Inexpensive at 50 pesos to go up and down. Smooth ride and many look out spots at the top. There is a small convenient store, bathrooms, an outdoor gym, zip line at the top.

Killer views of such a incredible area. Very kind & helpful staff working the summit. The hike back down was fun, but quite slippery from the mud from recent rain. Took us about an hour to finish the hike. Worth the money

Omg!!! Out of this world experience. My husband and I enjoyed our second honeymoon so much and were simply delighted by this amazing city and the teleferico ride. The view when you get to the top is indescribable. The feeling of breathing life, how welcoming people are and all the history of the place is just a great experience. Highly recommend. Don't miss it if you are in the area.

First time going on one. It's was an amazing experience. And the view is amazing. But it would've been better without the fog.
But it was a lots of fun!

Great way to get a birds eye view of the city as you go up and down. Felt safe, and it was a quick 5 minutes up. Beautiful scenery once at the top. There is a little tienda, washrooms, small kids play grounds, zip lining. Also, very inexpensive. Must do if in Orizaba!

The ride takes about 5 minutes to the top. The most inconvenience thing about it is buying the ticket. It's not go there, buy the ticket and taking the ride. There are always lots of people, who want to take the ride so if you are unlucky, you have to buy the ticket for a later time slot. If you are up there, you have few hiking options, a Museum and of course a beautiful sight over the City.

The teleférico was a great experience. The cost per roundtrip is $70 pesos and your ticket includes discounts for another attractions in the area. Six persons per cabin, three cabins go up and the go down. Travel time per leg 6 minutes 30 seconds. Atop the mountain you can do some activities like ziplining, walk down the mountain or just admire the view.

If you like heights (or even if you’re a liiiittle scared) and nice views, this is definitely recommended. You get a nice view of Orizaba as you stop and get off at the top of the mountain to explore more things and get a better view. We loved our experience here!

Gustave Eiffel-designed mansion in art nouveau style, with museums exploring soccer, beer & space.
It's a very nice building. It currently hosts 5 museums. The archeological one is very interesting. The other 4 are small but still good for a quick visit. In the beer museum you get a glass of beer for free.

Really beautiful architectural work of Eiffel. It has a great historical context.
At night it seems more beautiful, most of the time you can see people celebrating graduations and taking photos.
It is not decorated as often as before when special seasons present.
About the restaurants I'm not really sure but as I've heard its really fancy.

The Museo de la Cerveza is a small museum consisting of two rooms. It is included in the 50 pesos museum pass, which can be purchased at the visitor's center in Palacio de Hierro. This pass grants visitors access to over 14 museums in Orizaba. However, during an April visit, it was mentioned that beer tastings were no longer available due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Alameda Francisco Gabilondo Soler Cri-Cri is a unique park that features a war hero memorial and an area dedicated to the popular cartoon cricket, Cri-Cri. The park offers various amusement-like attractions and food stands. It is also well-known for its child-friendly environment where kids can drive little cars around, often crashing into each other and pedestrians like future Mexican drivers. However, some visitors have suggested implementing red lights and police presence to control the chaos caused by these young drivers.
This is a crazy park, one of the craziest I've seen in my life and I did see a lot, trust me. So many children in the little cars, and they drive like crazy crashing into each other and into pedestrian, like true future Mexican drivers. It's in their blood. This park needs some red lights and police to control this wild horde. Other than that there are some food stands and amusement park like attractions. I have also seen a coupe getting profesional photoshoot in the middle of the park (fortunately crazy little drivers won't go upstairs)

The Eco River Park in Orizaba offers a scenic riverside walk with murals and animal enclosures, making it a must-visit destination. The park features pedestrian and vehicular bridges crossing the river at frequent intervals, providing easy access for visitors. Tourists can enjoy observing a variety of animals such as lions, tigers, monkeys, and turtles while appreciating the effort put into their care.
It's totally free. Family and friendly. You can see lot's of exotic animals, kind of a zoo. Must wear comfortable clothing and shoes because you have to walk a lot. Perfect for spending your free time. Better watch out and find out what the trip hides! (For example, you can take a look at the locks of love and friendship placed on the bridges).

Wow. In 2023 Mexico there is a zoo from 1900. Crammed cages with overflowing wild animals. Depressed animals. All in the name of keeping species alive.??!! I’d rather be killed. Jesus and this is a catholic country! And this is a pueblo magico??!! Giving props to a city that visibly abuses animals is disgusting. Catholics and Mexican citizens should be outraged and embarrassed. For this reason I will never return to Orizaba —which is a shame because everything else about this Pueblo is magical.
Howard Goldstein — Google review
This is the end of the riverside walk, admiring the murals and the various animal enclosures, around 3 km one way from the teleferico area and double that for returning in the other direction on the opposite bank. Pedestrian bridges as well as vehicular bridges ( with steps to reach them) cross the river at frequent intervals. Not to be missed on a visit to orizaba. Here is where one finds the tiger, hippo. Some animal enclosure enroute are too tiny, wish they had more space.

Iconic glacier-topped volcano & Mexico's highest peak, a popular destination for climbing.
Nice place for climbing... It is safer to start climbing through the South Face. You didn't have to pay anything and you can camp at Cargaderos Park.
Valter Paralovo — Google review
I climbed this with a Mexican guiding company owned by a friend of mine. This is a great peak and after getting up to the Piedra Grande hut we did a short acclimatisation hike on the first day. The summit day we were away at 1.15am and after a night time slog up the shale/rocky path to the Labyrinth we found that there was quite a bit of ice on the route that required front pointing and pick work. This was done in rope teams but it was easy enough. After getting through the Labyrinth we started the three hour cold, windy slog that took us up the steep 40 degree slope up to the summit. It was cold and very windy this day but we were rewarded with top summit views. A hard 8 hour slog in total to the summit. Quite a good time and we took 4 hours on the decent. All in all a great mountain day but hard work.
david howells — Google review
It's an amazing experience, beautiful volcano. Not very technical climb but the glacier is quite steep so make sure you're ready for it and rope up. Also go with someone who knows their way through the labyrinth part (it's called that for a reason).
Egle Zujute — Google review
First of all i want to say it was amazing experiance. I climbed the peak unguided. It was beautiful. We had a group of four guys in fairly ok shape. From the hut, it took us 6 hours to the top and 3.5 hours coming down. The first 2/3 of the hike is dirt and rock with some scrambling and then glacial travel for the last 1/3. Most people do not rope up, but crampons and an ice axe are a must. There are multiple trails through the Labyrinth below the glacier. A lot lf people got lost in Labyrinth part. When coming down, I recommend tracking the trail so that you can follow it on the way down. Also stick to the trails on the left when you are in the Labyrinth. We used summitorizaba. com for our accommodations and the lodging and transportation was fantastic. Once again, amazing.
Damir Vidanović — Google review
Usually takes about 12ish hours, great experience. The labyrinth is challenging if you don't have a guide, be sure to have a proper gpx file and such. It's recommended to rope up on the glacier although not necessary- just don't slip!

Amazing mountain! At 5636 meters above sea level it is the highest mountain in Mexico and the highest volcano in North America. If you plan on summitig this beautiful volcano, you need to consider acclimitazation as a crucial factor. Don't make the usual mistake people from the US or Europe make, by thinking they are above the experience level needed for proper preparation. Wether you need a guide or not is up to your judgement and experince level, but you will need technical alpine equipment to get all the way up to the summit. It is a serious undertaking. I hired Javier Leyva to guide our group. You can find him on his Facebook page Senderismo Mexico. Awesome experience!
Hunter Johnston — Google review
Amazing feeling on the summit, quite breathtaking really, in more than one way.

Africam Safari is a safari park and wildlife refuge in Puebla, Mexico that recreates African habitats as closely as possible. The attraction aims to recreate African habitats as closely as possible, allowing you to watch the animals from your own car or on a guided bus. The park is open 9AM - 5PM daily, and is closed on Sundays.
I'm at a loss for words to describe this experience.. This place is incredible. Jaw dropping surprises at every turn.

Very well kept! So many different animals. The staff were helpful and friendly. So many lions they had! We'll probably do an experience next time we're there!
Abdalla Abdel-Rahman — Google review
It is what it is. Don’t expect (say) UK levels of animal welfare but I understand that many animals (ie the majority of the carnivores) were rescued from private owners so they’re likely much better off here. My four year old enjoyed herself but then the experience of the human visitors seems to come first (eg the wolf/tiger/lion enclosures are pretty small so rangers can feed them bits of meat for our enjoyment - of course such animals would roam/gorge in the wild). I was confused as to why the rabbits had artificial grass in the petting zoo - not their natural environment - and the park is very reliant on the herbivores (giraffes, camels, oxen, zebras) not biting the fingers of/off kids feeding them. Fortunately, these animals have come up with methods of being fed without injuring us (like opening their mouths for us to pour feed in) but it feels like a disaster looking for someone to happen to. On the other hand the herbivores did have acres of space. The human food is pretty limited/very Mexican (who knew?) so you may want to bring your own. We were made to wait 20-30 mins for the safari ride because they were hoping to get in more visitors before they gave up as the park was pretty empty (it was Dec 31) and their animal pellets markup is pretty larcenous. Signage is also poor. There are no elephants if the elephant in their logo raises your expectation. You always exit through the gift shop of course, even with airport style ropes to ensure you pass by everything. If I go again I’ll wear greenscreen coloured clothes to fight against the incessant photo-taking and hawking (we paid for a package that meant they binned one photo rather than just giving it to us).

An amazing experience, I recommend everyone who visits Puebla to come to Africam Safari. A really incredible zoo experience, most of the zoo is one huge enclosure & you drive around to see all the animals, such a fresh way of visiting such beautiful animals. All the animals are very lively & you can see are really happy and well treated. Rest rooms and convenient stores are located all over the zoo & 3 main restaurant to visit. If you don’t have a car, they do have tour buses available as well.

Great place to come with a family for fun. Children will be thrilled seeing all the animals up close. There are a lot to see, plan for several hours. Very fair prices in the gift shops, unlike the price gouging you typically see in such venues. The restaurant also provided good food and decent service. Overall a great experience.

I enjoyed this zoo more than the San Diego Zoo! I wish there was more information available during the visit, like a digital map for the walking part everything was in Spanish so me and the kids didn’t understand a lot but it was still great, just a minor inconvenience. Maybe more information on their website so you know what to expect. I wore flip flops which is not a good choice but I thought it was all drive through. Overall, I was still very impressed and it’s a great value for you money.

Africam safari was such a wonderful experience!
It was $850 pesos ($55 Canadian) for their tour plus entry tickets which was 1.5 hours where they drive you through all the animals and talk about the animals. It was an open roof concept and well worth the money! Then you would switch to a jeep for the lions and some other animals. Absolutely worth doing instead of the $350 pesos tickets to just drive through yourself.
Half the park is drive through (either with your car or their tour), other half was a walk through the park on your own.
Recommend going Monday Tuesday as that is the slowest days for them, less people which means better photos and better view of the animals.
Pets: They do NOT allow pets but they do have an area for individual spaces for dogs so you can leave them there with food and water for the day. However, I do not know how many spaces there are so I do not know if they would run out of the individual spaces for dogs if it is a busy day.
Highlights:
- They had an area where you could feed the birds seeds on a stick, and they would all fly on your hand and stick to eat.
- The butterfly 🦋 area, the butterflies would also fly on you frequently which was absolutely amazing.
- They had a jeep built into the lions enclosure with a glass wall in between (front of jeep was in their enclosure and the wheel/seats/back of jeep was on the other side) you could take photos in the jeep while the lions were laying on the front of the jeep. It was really cool to see a lions face right in front of me through the glass wall.
- The elephants were so amazing. They had 18 of them when we went.
- You can pay for an experience of feeding the giraffes from the open concept car tour they had (we didn't do this, but saw it happen and it looked really fun, they would eat out of your hand, makes some great photo opportunities and close up experience with the giraffes).
It was clean, well taken care of, and great people.

For the same reason, this is one more of them.
As in all of them, the baroque style is noticeable in its external and internal configuration, on the façade smooth walls but on the "front" if there is baroque decoration with so much ornament, it is its carving, as well as the interior altarpiece.
Its furniture is sober, but it stands out that in addition to the main room intended for the main mass, they have other spaces dedicated to praying for special issues.

The best month to visit is August, for its festival of the night that no one sleeps, a reference for its flower mats, a true art. There is the museum on one side where they show the mats from previous years, look for a parking lot nearby and walk to the basilica, because during the holidays there is no passage on the streets that surround it.

(Translated by Google) I have been attending Huamantla for about 35 years. Tlax., to that magical night every year, August 14-15. Visiting the image of the Virgin of Charity, in its spacious and modern Basilica-Cathedral, is the objective of a planned trip, to be at the sanctuary punctually on that date. The will of the Huamantlecos to create that ephemeral art is admirable, with all the work and expenses that it represents, to create that dazzling effect of light and color. There are 10 km of carpets that the image travels in about 6 hours or more.
Long live tradition!!!!
