Beautiful place! Nice and peaceful. The employees were awesome! Breakfast was better than expected and would recommend it. Thanks to all the employees for making our trip a memorable one. Will definitely be returning for vacation. Just got back from another wonderful time. Spent 3 days and enjoyed the peace and quiet. What an amazing place. I have enjoyed the off season here and will be back when it gets hot next summer. Thanks again to all the employees, especially the women in the kitchen cooking. Them ladies are awesome!!

We had fun. I just wish they had one more pool for kids....but the rest is great.

It needs tons of maintenance and cleaning

This place is awsome it's only that
some animals are not there, but every thing is set up good and the animals are taken care of well.
UpBeeXN — Google review
It was an interesting visit. But poor animal's they are all kept in small confinements I know there's animal cruelty going on here but what can you do its in Mexico. Other then throwing up, I manage to snap some photos. They do have a liger and lion's tiger's hippos a biting camel
Moises — Google review
Animals are in really bad shape alligator was dead for sometime. The lions were fed the same animals that would die from the zoo. Place is really dirty and it seems that the visitors are the only ones that feed the animals with ziplock bags that one pays for WWE OR PETA SHOULD VISIT THIS PLACE!!

Big Bend Ranch State Park
State park
Sights & Landmarks
Backpacking, biking & rafting on 300,000+ acres of scenic desert, mountain & river wilderness.
It was a beautiful, expressive trip as usual. The state park seems wilder than the national and more open to bringing your own unique experience of the wilderness to the fore. Our campsite was by the river and there were a couple of hiking sites we made it to in less than an hour that provided us with some good exertion. I would not choose a campsite so close to a main road next time, but the traffic died down around midnight and didn’t really become obtrusive again until daylight.
mark rockeymoore — Google review
This park is a hidden gem! One of the best state parks I've been to and we have hit a bunch! Primitive camping here is fantastic as the ones up in the high clearance 4 wheeling areas are by themselves and with some incredible views. Loved hiking here. Those dark skies are something else and those sunrises are just as amazing. The people at the visitors centers are so helpful. I can't say enough about it! I would say it's just as good as the National Park
Marcelle Alvernaz — Google review
This place is not as frequented as the National Park but certainly worth the trip as well. We did canoeing here and were able to see and touch the Mexican side of the river pretty easily. So that was super cool! Also great scenery here and wildlife.
Mahmood M. Shilleh — Google review
One of the best if not the best state park in Texas. An amazing alternative to the next-door national park with similar, yet different scenery at the same time. The main draw to big bend ranch sp is the extremely rugged desert landscapes. It's harsh, brutal and unforgiving here and definitely more of a challenge to explore than the national park. That's part of the appeal here, you are extremely unlikely to encounter more than a couple of people if any out on any of the extensive biking or hiking trails. There are several standout areas like closed canyon and the hoodoos along river road, however to get deep into the park requires a 4x4/high clearance vehicle. If you like very rugged desert landscapes like me, then this place will not disappoint. It has some of the most spectacular desert scenery in the world and it's honestly shocking to me that this place does not get more attention, a must-visit place during any west Texas trip!
Ulyses Yakovlevich — Google review
No other State Park like it in Texas. It rivals the National Park in beauty but is more primitive and less touristy (no sitting in a line of cars waiting to get anywhere). Beware, there are no good roads in the park. The roads range from bad to worse to paths that are only roads in the technical sense that they are on a map. And those are the roads that TPWD actually keeps up to some degree. The main park road is suitable for a rough ride in a 2WD, but anything off the main road should really be tried with a good 4WD. The unmaintained roads are only for experienced off-roaders. You can certainly see some fantastic scenery on a short visit, but to really appreciate the place demands a multi-day visit and some back country camping. There's so much to see but this park makes you work for it. Don't expect many amenities.
Timothy Flathers — Google review
For RV travelers, this IS NOT a pleasant place. The only campground (La Cuesta) that allows vehicles over 18 feet must stay on a loose gravel parking lot sectioned off with guard rails. AND, a fresh asphalt storage area that smells like fresh asphalt really accentuates the gravel parking lot.
AND, these parking spots are not even close to level.
There are several nice campgrounds for tents or small campers along Hwy 170.

Big Bend NP has been on my bucket list and it did not disappoint. My wife was not keen on going and she was impressed. We will definitely go back. There is not much to do outside the park, but the park has plenty of hiking and sight seeing.
Mike Caillouet — Google review
I kind of prefer this park over the national park...it had a river..
Plus it has zip lining...not the park park. But nearby..
I don't think this whole area is okay for dogs...
There are rattle snakes...cactuses with sharp things on them...and there are cougars...aka mountain lions....we actually heard on at the national park

We were in the area to explore Big Bend National Park. I didn’t think we would get a chance to visit the state park this time. We booked a last minute raft on the Rio Grande, with Big Bend Boating and Hiking Company. They had an early afternoon raft at the Dark Canyon, at Big Bend Ranch State Park, and we decided to join the group. We had a great experience and made me want to go back to see more of the park. We were the only boats on the river and it was much quieter than the National Park. It was a unique experience to see the canyon from the river.

Stayed 10 days out in the wilderness here. Amazing. We went last November, the weather was perfect. Amazing night skies, and the hiking was phenomenal. Will be going back!

My family and I recently had the opportunity to visit Big Bend Ranch State Park, and although our initial plans to book an RV campsite were thwarted due to its newness, we decided to explore the park's other offerings. Despite the scorching heat reaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit, we made the most of our time and had a memorable experience.
We were initially disappointed to learn that RV spots were unavailable at Big Bend Ranch State Park, as well as at the neighboring Big Bend National Park. This made our accommodation search quite challenging. However, we didn't let this deter us from visiting the state park altogether. We opted to drive around and explore the park's Scenic Overlook areas and points of interest instead.
Due to the extreme temperatures, it was not feasible for us to embark on the park's walking trails. Our family's safety was paramount, and we decided to exercise caution and refrain from engaging in strenuous physical activity. Nonetheless, we did manage to explore an old movie set near the Rio Grande River. This unique location allowed us to take some captivating photos and engage our children in a fun educational lesson about the border between Mexico and Texas.
Continuing our drive, we ventured further and enjoyed breathtaking views from the Scenic Overlook. The natural beauty of the park left us in awe, and we couldn't help but appreciate the stunning landscapes that surrounded us.
Although our visit lasted only about an hour, we were captivated by the park's beauty and potential for exploration. We intend to return when the weather is cooler to fully immerse ourselves in the park's walking trails and delve deeper into its wonders.
Overall, Big Bend Ranch State Park left a positive impression on us. Despite the challenges of finding suitable camping options and the intense heat, the park's scenic beauty and the opportunity to experience the Rio Grande River firsthand made our visit worthwhile. We highly recommend planning a trip to this park, ensuring to choose a time when temperatures are more favorable for extensive exploration.
Note: Due to our limited experience within the park and our inability to partake in all activities, we have assigned a rating of four stars. We anticipate that upon returning for a more extensive visit, our rating may be subject to change.

Great state Park to hike with your dog. They have two trails the Closed Canyon and Hoodoo Trail. $5 per person entry fee, kids under 12 free. Visitors Centre is great and helpful Rangers

Nice drive along FM 170 going to Big bend national Park. We did not go into the interior because you basically need four-wheel drive for it all.

Rugged, sparse visitors and campers, stunning views and super fun 4x4 high clearance roads!

Don't overlook this very large, lesser traveled state park, I enjoy it more than Big Bend NP. I cover this 300,000+ acre park in my book "TEXAS BADLANDS: The Ultimate Black and White Journey" (available on Amazon) extensively in Chapter 4 "The Other Side of Nowhere."
Be sure to purchase a Big Bend Ranch SP Topo Map at the Visitors Centers for precise location/navigation. The drive from Presidio, Texas to Lajitas, Texas on TX FM 170 is one of the most underrated drives in the United States.

We love this place and this was our 5th year to go back. We camped for 3 days at the interior and did a lot of hiking, the park rangers were very helpful and one night we got a star show from one of them

Such a beautiful place and the landscape is amazing. Hiked the canyon trail and Hoodoo's which were both awesome 🤠
My family visited Lajitas resort over Memorial Day weekend and had a great experience at the entire resort. The zip line tour was an added bonus that made the stay especially memorable. My sister and I did the Quicksilver which was 100% worth it! The entire tour took around 2 hours which includes the trek up to the mountains, but the guides, Lloyd and Josh were very friendly and made the experience safe and enjoyable. The views from the top are amazing, I would highly recommend to anyone that visits the resort that likes exhilarating experiences to check this one out!

We did the Quick Silver tour over Christmas. Was every bit as exciting and entertaining as we imagined! The staff were incredibly gracious and hospitable. Even if you've never ziplined before, the Quick Silver tour is one you won't soon forget. We had so much fun that the time zipped by, pun intended. If you're going to Big Bend National Park for a family vacation, do yourself and your loved ones a favor and DON'T MISS THIS!

My sister and I recently ziplined here to do the Quicksilver Tour and had Josh and Joey as our guides. I’ve ziplined in other places and haven’t ever received the kind of service and safety as they provided. I would highly recommend this and if you are able to special request them, they will take care of you. The ziplines were all great and long with beautiful views. You have the ability to rent a GoPro for only $20 and it is so worth it to capture your experience.

You MUST zip line with this crew. Our family, including my 11 year old son, zip lined the Clay Henry Tour. The first 2 jumps helped ease them into the bigger jumps that followed. We rented the Go Pros for their point-of-view, and it’s the best $20 you can spend for the memories. My son pretended to be a YouTuber, and our amazing guides, Christina and Adam, added amazing and hilarious commentary to go along with him. I can’t praise them enough!!!!

Jake and josh were amazing zip line instructors. Had a great time with my fiancé, and they made sure everyone was enjoying the tour.I was always scared of heights, have been zip lining before to face my height fear but always leave with the same fear BUT this place helped me beat my fear. The view was gorgeous. Don’t worry about having to record with your phone because they also have go-pro you could rent for a very affordable price. Every single one of us left the tour with a big smile on our faces. Will definitely come back zip lining and would recommend anyone to come here.

Too many visitors to Big Bend Ranch State Park skip the opportunity to walk through the Environmental Education Center located just behind the Barton Warnock Visitor Center. ⚠️ BIG MISTAKE!
If you have any interest at all in the distinctive flora (especially 🌵 cacti) of West Texas and the wider Chihuahua Desert — and who doesn't? — then you will surely enjoy a relaxed stroll through the carefully planted, clearly labelled, and well-maintained walkways and hillock behind the Center, where you can view close up a tremendous variety of local cactus, shrubbery, small trees and other plant life endemic to the whole region — all gathered together in this one compact, xeriscaped display.
Some of the less common plants displayed here you may otherwise never run across in an initial or even later visit to Big Bend — so see (and photograph) them here. Learn a few of their names so you can impress your friends when hiking through the parks.
Offering good views of the Lajitas area, the eastern end of the state park, and the adjacent Mexico border region, you may well fine yourself wanting to spend at least a couple hours here.

Very nice center with a large garden area exhibiting many varieties of desert plants. There is a short hike up to an overlook over the Comanche Trail. The employees are great about providing maps and info.

This is a must stop for all those driving through. Unbelievable gift shop with a great selection of regional goods as well as interesting and informative theme items for the area. So much fun! Its a great stop - bathrooms, picnic and walk through their indoor museum. They also have a small garden with a lot of the natural fauna displayed. With little ones I really appreciate the amenities and all the goodies to look over.

The best State Park in Texas! This is the largest state park In Texas in fact all of the Texas State parks combined will fit inside the boundary of the Big Bend Ranch State Park! Not the mention the neighboring Big Bend National Park!

Nice visitor's center, helpful staff, gift shop, impressive exhibit area, beautiful gardens and an RV dump and fill station. We ended up spending about an hour. Great way to learn and about and plan your visit to Big Bend Ranch State Park.

If you’re in the Big Bend area this visitor center should be a mandatory stop. The garden is spectacular, and the interpretive display is the best I’ve ever seen!

This place was named after my uncle, Dr. Barton H. Warnock, or BH as the family called him. He knew more about the Big Bend region than anyone, living or dead. I was fortunate enough to attend the dedication ceremony here, along with my late brother, Miles Warnock. It was a great day, and this is a great place. A real gem in our Texas State Park system.

Entrance to BBR State Park is exceptionality beautiful and informative. The displays explaining the history of the area are the best I've seen in any stays or national park. The staff was very knowledgeable and patient with our many questions. Overall, a great experience.
Located in Big Bend National Park, Santa Elena Canyon is a popular destination for nature lovers. The area offers stunning views of 1,500-ft cliffs along the Rio Grande and provides an excellent spot for canoeing. To reach the canyon, visitors must take Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive which offers several overlooks and trails along the way. The water front is easily accessible with public parking spaces located about 100ft from the shore area.
It is majestic! The trail is short and easy. Walking into the river will find different scenery.
??? — Google review
Hike is beautiful with the 1500 foot limestone forming the canyon. It's pretty easy, but the switchbacks can tire you out. Didn't get to go all the way to the end because of how high the water was the day we went and we weren't prepared for that.
Nomad Life — Google review
Short, easy trail for the family, as long as everyone is good with steps and moderate inclines. Had to hold my kids’ hands for the section of the trail with steep drop-offs, but otherwise it was kid-friendly, with gorgeous views along the river and large boulders in the cavern the kids enjoyed scrambling up. Bring a light jacket in winter as the temp drops in the cavern when you’re out of the sun.
Abby Crotinger — Google review
Fairly easy hike. River crossing can be tricky if the water is high. Can be very muddy. Well worth the visit if you’re going to Big Bend.
Joe Yoo — Google review
Ease of access to the water front, there is public parking spaces about 100ft from the shore area, saw lots of people posted up with chairs by the water reading, if you are attempting to reach the trail expect to walk through some water to get to the head of it. The trail starts with a steep climb after the water but is relatively flat after that along the side of the canyon

One of the best canyons I've ever been into. It's both beautiful and massive, and the drive there is a scenic as it gets.

Beautiful area in Big Bend National park, must see and doing a hike if possible to view beautiful sightings!!

Busy trail, but worth it. A fairly easy hike except for the switchbacks. The sheer size of the canyon walls definitely do not translate in pictures. A great place to get some shade and cool off in the water during the summer months.

Broke free from work to come check this one off my list. I didn’t know I’d love big bend as much as I did.
Not much for services at this location as it’s remote but an awesome landscape and beautiful yet short hike.

This is a short hike with a spectacular view at the end. It is not a difficult hike and there are lovely views along the way. However when you get to the end of the trail, The views of the canyon are stunning! They are all some areas at the start of the hike which are a little steep.

Couldn’t wait to check Santa Elena canyon in person. Love canyons and had seen so many pictures of it. It was on top of my “must visit list” of this trip to Big Bend. It’s a long drive in a beautiful scenic road to get there. We parked and used the restroom, before heading to the trail head. There was a lot of traffic since was late morning. Very beautiful views and a unique experience on the Texas border.

Had an awesome experience. Went during the thanksgiving week. There is an entrance fee of 30$ for car and 15$ for bike for entering in the Big Bend national park. The ticket is valid for 7 days. Since big bend park is so big it will probably take 7 days and more to fully cover it. Santa Elena canyon is a part of it.We took the Maverick's drive to reach the canyon. There is no proper road but a gravel path it's not good for the car but it is good for the nature and the picturesque surrounding area. So one advice don't take low ground clearance car. Once you have reached the canyon you have to hike ahead so as to reach in the canyon. The hike is pretty easy. The difficult part is to reach the trail. When we went the path to canyon trail was flooded in the night. The water had receded but it was quite difficult to get on the other side. Other wise an awesome view and an amazing place. Many people were kayaking through the river and were taking there camping gear on further ahead through the canyon. They were probably going to camp at the canyons other end. It's very beautiful out there.

Good place to visit, hike and kayak. We can cross river by walk. Depth is around 2-3 ft when we visited. One side is USA and other side of the river is Mexico.
Half day and full day River tours are available. Plan ahead.
sree bablu — Google review
The BEST place in Big Bend! We had to wade through part of the river to be able to enter the canyon. The water was warm and thigh deep, so it was more fun than difficult. The walk to the river itself is simple, and I even saw people in wheelchairs coming down the trail
Morghan Townsend — Google review
This is likely the most impressive sights in Big Bend National Park, up to 1000-foot-high vertical cliffs, there are not too many places like that in the rest of the US. The trail is less than a mile long and the views are gorgeous. You may have to cross a small muddy stream to get to the cliffs depending on the time of the year. These massive limestone cliffs are the sedimentary remains of an ancient shallow sea, and they were carved by the Rio Grande over the last 60 million years (they call it Rio Bravo in Mexico).
What a great place! Not only are you seeing and experiencing history in the making, you have a rich choice of gifts to choose from to take back home to friends and family...coffee from the region, textiles, rocks, precious stones, antiques, etc. Be prepared to spend some time here!!!

Awesome shop with tons of cool Terlinqua merchandise and trinkets. People hang outside and drink outside, the inside is really nice and the workers there were great. Buy your Terlinqua T-Shirts here! Had way more than just tourist stuff, they had jewelry, even a book store and homemade items like soaps and snacks. Worth the trip here and they give out guides to the Ghost town. Stop in and buy a beer and a postcard while in town

Fun shop with lots of local knick-knacks and artwork. It's a big store so take your time to browse. Good place to check out while waiting in line at Starlight. Especially loved their little animal figurines and stoneware. Large beer selection too.

Terlingua Ghost Town is a place stuck in time! They have a gift shop where you can buy lots of souvenirs and a small history museum. However, the main atraction is the ruins of what used to be one of the first towns in the old western USA. You can even play an old game with horseshoes cowboys and gunslingers used to play, i know it thanks to "Red Dead Redemption" a western based videogame mimicking those old good times!!

Great location to spend time while you wait to be seated at Starlight theatre.
They have a lot of great souvenirs and gifts that represent Terlingua and Big Bend.

We loved this place. Close to Big Bend!! You can explore all the property and find anywhere to set up your tent. We found a wonderful spot. Nice to have restrooms on the property that isn't too far away. I enjoyed the shower as well. Very cute setup. We will definitely be back!

We enjoyed looking around the old time general store. The Starlight restaurant was only open at dinner, and it had long wait times, so we didn't eat there. The ghostown was a lot of fun to check out, and the Terlingua history was interesting to learn about.

There's lots of good touristy stuff to buy. It is also a great place to drink beer on the front porch.

Our hotel host recommended we stop by to hang out on “the porch”. Nice place to grab a beer and enjoy the view of the mountains. Great book selection inside the store along with other gifts items.
Starlight Theatre is a unique dining spot in Terlingua, Texas, housed in a renovated old movie palace. The restaurant offers an eclectic menu of Texas cuisine and hosts live music events within its funky decor. The establishment features an airy adobe-walled interior with a prominent mesquite-topped bar as the centerpiece. Their menu includes various options such as a sixteen-ounce T-bone steak, lemon chicken breast, beef picadillo, and daily specials like Shrimp Mexicana.
Enjoyed my time here with family and friends, the live band was a delight. The brisket was a bit dry, but I enjoyed the rest of the meal.
I highly recommend making a reservation beforehand, waited an hour for a large group of people. There is outdoor seating with heaters, still pretty chilly though outside during the winter season. Restrooms are located outside as well.
Overall, enjoyed my visit here! Would recommend to others.

This is quite the nostalgic experience. The food is great, the atmosphere is rustic and old western and the service was excellent. Granted we were dining late and there were only a few tables being served at the time but it is for sure a bucket historic place to visit.
Mark Giles — Google review
Long wait for dinner, but well worth it! It's such a quaint establishment with such an interesting history. It's also right next to a little bar area, with a haunted hotel and some shops, so you'll have plenty to do when you're waiting.
The salsa is a must-try! They make it in house and it's absolutely delicious. We also had the vegan chipotle pork and the antelope meat and both were superb. Definitely the best dining experience we had in West Texas!

We were in line by 4:15 but still were told we would be in the second seating. It was spring break and there were several large parties ahead of us. They only have 15 tables. We got a drink from the cantina and went next door to shop and kill time. The store has a great selection of merchandise. As we were walking back they were calling us - we got the last table for the first seating! Our waiter Ben was very helpful. The fried Brussels sprouts he recommended were outstanding. My husband had the chicken fried antelope and I ordered the French dip. Everything was prepared well and served hot. A local musician played guitar and sang while we were eating. We brought home enough food for one of us to have another meal! We talked with a couple who were arriving as we were leaving around 6:30 and they later told us they couldn’t get on the list as they were full for the night.

Loved my visit to the Starlight. I was expecting a line into the parking lot at 4pm but it was very chill on a recent Saturday night. There wasn't even a line at 5 when they opened, just several parties kind of standing around. Everyone took their turns walking up to the hostess and in the end there weren't even enough people to fill the restaurant at opening.
While you still have to wait in line to sit at the bar, normally the wait is much less and you might be able to get right in. So pro tip, just eat the bar. It's more fun there anyway as you can chat with the bartenders and locals.
The salsa and guacamole combo appetizer is a must. Then I say opt for the country fried antelope. I mean, where else are you going to get antelope? It was delicious. The steak sandwiches was also really tasty.
There's live music as well which starts at 6pm. Unsure if it's every night or just on the weekends.
There's also a Cantina around the corner to the right where you can enjoy a drink before the restaurant opens.

A fun night! Staff were on it from the start offering us margaritas while we waited to be seated, only took a few minutes in the end but a great welcome. Sat at the bar which was great as we had someone on hand to keep the margaritas flowing all evening, think we tried almost every variety they had on offer and they were all good! The food was surprising, huge portions of really delicious stuff. The Brussels were an absolute highlight, crispy and tangy, wish I knew how to make them like this. Wish we had space for desert but we over-ordered on mains and sides so were stuffed full. All of this and live music throughout too. A unique experience in this magical place!

Plenty of parking, thanksgiving is their busiest weekend and during this time they don’t do reservations. The brisket is amazing and this is very likely the best food in town.
I believe they open at 5 and stay open late. Also try the brisket queso.

Unfortunately after all the hype about this place l was underwhelmed. Their beer selection is uninspiring with the same old mass produced bottled brands. We got the antelope strips which were quite good. I wish l could say the same for the BBQ mesquite brisket. I was told it was slow cooked for hours but it was rather tough, overcooked and tasteless and the sauce was nothing special. The potato salad tasted mostly like raw onions. The beans were average. Basically it was an average meal. Nothing special.
The ambiance and service was good. I would come back again and just get appetizers.

Worth the hype and lives up to its reputation. Excellent food, generous portions, fair prices and incredibly friendly staff. Highly recommend the Chicken Sandwich. There is a massive gift shop next door, called the Terlingua Trading Company. Definitely plan to check it out too.

Best bar in town. Went on Saturday at 5:30, as they get extremely busy, late in the evening. Drinks, food, and service are excellent. Authentic Texas style music started at 7, and made for a fantastic vibe. Restrooms are outside by the jail, and are a little tricky. Nice Texas type store is next door, if you arrive early Recommend

Beautiful views, good music, cold drinks while we waited to be seated. We got here at 8pm on a Friday night and waited 2 hours, which we expected. Outside there is a cantina with a bar and appetizers you can order while you wait. We had brisket nachos, margaritas, beer, ranch water and all was great. Once inside we ordered chicken fried antelope. Food was tasty, cooked just right, fast and friendly service, nice ambiance.

Best place in this town! If your looking for a great food this is the spot. The employees are very welcoming, the place has a calm relaxing vibe to it. Food was great. The burger my husband got was absolutely humongous! When we come back in town we will most definitely stopping by .

Definitely the most upscale place to eat in Terlingua. The menu was unique, including antelope and quail. The Texas style brisket was moist and well prepared. The entertainment was enjoyable. Our server was very personable and bartender was very attentive and quick to get us a drink while we waited to be seated.

Great space and atmosphere.. live music was great.. very busy but no surprise there..!
Food was decidedly average - the chili and antelope tenders lacked any strong flavor.. her quail was very tasty..!
Churros were too thick and the chocolate sauce was not even warm.

This place has some HISTORY. Nice to dine in a place which goes long back. I ordered a chicken entree. It was salty and to my liking. The people are friendly and accommodating. I wish I ordered something else. And they are also open till late.
Their bar and decor is cool. Not sure if I will be back.

Their Brisket Nachos were possibly the best I’ve ever had. Perfectly smoked and along with one of their cocktails (something called Pear-fect…) was a gorgeous meal in the ghost town. Their ambience was also lovely, with different forms of art and live music. The waiters were great as well.
Also, just beside the place is a cool ice cream truck that I loved. Their home-made chocolate ice cream is delicious!

We went here for an early Valentines dinner. I had never had quail before and I wasn't disappointed. It was covered in a blueberry balsamic glaze that paired perfectly with the quail. Friendly and great service. Plan on a wait fir a table, but get a drink and sit outside on the porch or inside on the dance floor.

First time here! Arrived at 5:10 and already had an hour and 15 minute wait. Get there early to sign in. They take your name and phone number and you will receive a text when your table is ready. You can wait outside and order cocktails and snacks while you wait. You can even check your spot in line through their link once you provide your phone number.
We were able to get in a little early due to sitting at the bar. We ordered the fried brussel sprouts which were AMAZING! Highly recommend as it’s the best thing I’ve eaten in Terlingua so far. We split the quail which comes with full sides of green beans and mashed potatoes and one quail each. I didn’t care for the blackberry sauce as it overpowers the quail but all in all it was good. I ordered pecan chocolate pie for dessert which tasted more like a chocolate chip cookie. The atmosphere was amazing as they had local talent singing softly in the background. I would definitely come back to try another dish. Bartenders were excellent!!

The atmosphere is great. There wasn’t live music the night my husband and I were there. I’m sure that would have added to the ambiance. Feels like you’re in an old western. I ordered The chili burger, it was good. My husband ordered the French dip. He enjoyed it a lot. The queso was just okay so I don’t think we’d order that again. Overall
Fun experience. We’d come back if we are ever back out this way!

We visited Big Bend for roughly four days and thought it would be nice to try something different than the park's restaurant. Admittedly, it was about a 45 minute drive to the Starlight Theatre but well worth the trip. Service was prompt, they had live music and the food was very good too. I had the mesquite brisket, a margarita and we shared churros and the pecan pie.
William Sharlow — Google review
First, the food and atmosphere were excellent. A very popular place. We had a 30 min wait time on a Thursday. The antelope appetizer was excellent. We had the large salad with smoked brisket added as the protein. Live music was nice. A great night of music, food and atmosphere.

Seven members of our family (three generations) enjoyed a two-day, eleven-mile canoe trip with Bobski and Zach the week after Christmas. It was an amazing time and our guides were terrific. The food they prepared was delicious and they patiently answered all of our many, many questions. Seeing the night sky while camping out was a highlight we'll always remember. I would highly recommend.

We had a wondering time with Billy and Zach on the river. We had a large group (13 in total) and were able to schedule this ahead of time. We were shuttled by Bobski and Buckner out to the put in spot, loaded up our canoes and took off. Most of us had minimal experience, but both guides were helpful and accommodating. We were able to spend a lovely day swimming, eating an amazing all vegan meal prepped by the guides, and they pointed out lots of different things to see along the river. We were guided through a few smaller rapids, paddled through some still water, and got out to swim several times. Our drivers and guides were so kind and fun to hang out with! We had a blast and definitely would go back again! Desert Sports was super communicative and easy to work with.

My family and I went on an excellent canoe river tour with Desert Sports. Their guide Billy was extremely knowledgeable about the areas flora and fauna, and kept us wonderfully entertained with his West Texas guide lore! We will definitely be back, and hope to rent some mountain bikes for the next excursion.

This is an awesome place to rent bikes and go exploring in the area. Mike and Crystal are very kind and knowledgeable and were great to chat with too. What's best is that they can recommend places for you to ride at all skill levels so even if you're a beginner there are places for you to enjoy too.
I spent the day mountain biking in Lajitas which is close to their shop and it was a blast. Mountain biking in the desert is a thrilling experience so if you don't have your own bike, definitely check them out when you're visiting the area.

My buddy and I just spent a week in Big Bend, and we used Desert Sports for mountain bike rentals as well as a half-day canoe tour. Mike (the owner) outfitted us with top-spec bikes, and he spent a lot of time with us beforehand to make sure everything was properly sized and adjusted, and that we were well-prepared for the ride. A great experience all around! Then two days later we met Billy for a canoe tour down the Rio Grande. Billy was AWESOME! He also took his time with us beforehand, making sure we understood the ins and outs of what we could expect out of the adventure. Then once we were underway he was both an excellent guide as well as a great teacher. We came away with a better understanding of the flora and fauna in and around the river, and he also provided a good deal of historical context of the people and geological events that have shaped the modern Rio Grande. A truly amazing guide, and a wonderful experience.
Great area for flying! Came down to spend some time in Big Bend and meet Marcos. He took us for a flight tour and I was impressed with how vast this area is! It’s gorgeous from the air and allows you to see things you may not otherwise get to see. Marcos was a great pilot and tour guide. I highly reccomend this company!

Our first time in a tiny plane and we were not disappointed! Marcos was great! We had to push back our flight time and he was very accommodating (we lucked out with good evening weather). The views are spectacular. Such a cool way to get a different perspective on Big Bend. Marcos is very knowledgeable about the area, it’s history, and the local politics. Highly recommend this tour!
Brandi Taylor — Google review
Did a 1.5 hour tour with Marcos. Great guide, showed us all the sites of the state-park and national. Amazing to see this area from the sky. He knew lots about geology, the history, and the park itself (being a former Park ranger).
In the future, you probably only need 1 hour MAX, not 1.5 hr. Price is reasonable for the amount of time in the air.
Om J — Google review
My wife and I just took a 90 minute flight with Marcos over both parks and the Devil's playground.
It was truly amazing scenery. Flying over such a vast space is really the only way to get a true perspective of the entire landscape. Marcos was a superb and knowledgeable pilot and guide. He also took a range of Covid measures: masks, temperature checks etc.
K AR — Google review
My husband and I took a one hour tour. It was a great time well worth the money our pilot/owner was very knowledgeable and friendly. My husband forgot his sunglasses in the plane and he was able to find them for him. Fantastic scenery a must do if you're in the area.
Lidia Bergmann — Google review
This was the #1 thing we where looking for on our Big Bend trip and he canceled last minute and blamed Covid. I literally called him and asked if everything was still on 2 weeks before the flight and he said yes Covid isn't shutting much down here and guaranteed me he would be open. But 5 days before the flight he claimed he had "a new policy" and was very short and fast to get off the phone. He could of cared less.
*If another pilot is reading this you could make a fortune by doing flight tours in Big Bend because he knows he is the only one in town and his service sucks.

One of the most unique experiences in the Big Bend. You can even fly over THE big bend where the Rio turns northeast and forms what is one of the most notable features of the Texas border. Prices vary by season, but worth the cost. Breathtaking mile high views of some of the most interesting terrain on the planet. Pro tip: Ask Pilot Marcos Paredes to tell you some stories about his experience as a BBNP Ranger for many years, or ask Pilot Alex Whitmore to sing you his Terlingua song "79852"

This is a must do experience. He’s very knowledgeable about the area and will take you over the best parts (even Big Bend National and State Park!) This was definitely one of the best parts of our trip!
Castolon Store is a fantastic place to take a leisurely stroll and offers a variety of snacks and beverages for convenience. The prices are reasonable, with two Gatorades and a Lunchable costing only $8. While it doesn't open early, it is available after 10AM following the completion of the Santa Elena Canyon hike. The store maintains high cleanliness standards and has friendly staff. Surprisingly, it carries more items than one would expect.
Cool area to walk around and the store itself has some snacks and drinks to help in a pinch. Two Gatorades and a Lunchable was $8 which I thought was totally reasonable. They don't open early but we're open after 10AM when I completed the Santa Elena Canyon hike.

Tuff Canyon Trail is a short and easy hike in Big Bend National Park, offering stunning views of the canyon. The trail includes a short loop with overlooks of the canyon and a spur trail that takes you through the canyon itself. This hike is suitable for families with young children as it is less than 1.5 miles round trip and offers some shade within the canyon. While there are some steep sections, it's an enjoyable detour with unique geological formations to admire along the way.
Short, very easy, but scenic hike.

Far Flung Outdoor Center is one of the three major outfitters in the area, offering guided trips at an average cost of $90 per person per day. They are known for their creative special trips that focus on food, photography, survival training, and music. The company provides rafts for half-day floats and offers unique experiences such as floats with troubadours Steve Fromholz, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock.
Far Flung is a top tier outfitter. We opted for a half-day kayak trip on the Rio Grande and had a great experience. Cody was a great guide and made sure everyone had a good laugh while also feeling safe.
We went during dry season, so it was a very leisurely trip. There were a couple of spots where the boats dragged, but it was still a fun experience - especially since you’re teetering the Mexican-American border the entire trip.

Minutes from Big Bend. For most part quiet, with some highway traffic now and then. Nice little gift shop...shirts, hats, decals, etc. Lots to pick from. Also offers tours (Jeep and river). Will definitely be back on next trip to Big Bend!

We had an amazing time on the half day trip. We went on the first run in Big Bend NP as their usual route was very shallow. It was nothing short of amazing. The guides were so incredibly knowledgeable and super friendly. You could tell they deeply love Big Bend and love sharing their knowledge. They would get just as excited about seeing things as the guests. Truly made for an amazing experience.

We booked the Round the Bend Jeep tour with Far Flung and it was FANTASTIC!! It was our first day in the area and we learned so much about the park from our guides, Jenn and Jeremy. They were full of knowledge, but just as important, they were super fun!! The vehicles are comfortable and the cadence of driving and stopping is near perfect. A great picnic lunch was a welcomed break after a morning of touring. We will call on Far Flung the next time we are in the area and suggest that any of our friends do the same!

Probably our favorite, and definitely most relaxing day in Big Bend, was floating down the Rio Grande with Far Flung. We had the good fortune of being able to do our one-day float in Santa Elena Canyon last week due to favorable water levels. I've taken many tours at outfits around the world and our guide Jordan was one of the best I've ever had. She was fun, kind, and professional. Not a question was asked all day that she didn't have an answer to - from the area's flora and fauna to the history of the landscape. Her knowledge was only surpassed by her obvious love of the environment and her "office". Far Flung was a great organization to work with, even allowing us to use a 2 ½ year old voucher from when covid cancelled our 2020 trip. Would absolutely plan another excursion with these folks if we're ever in the area again.

We had a GREAT time on our canoe trip with Far Flung! It started as a chilly, dreary day, but the sun broke through and turned out beautiful. Our guides were knowledgeable and fun to be with. They provided an outstanding deli buffet lunch, with some of the best salsa I had ever tasted (and I know salsa). We have used Far Flung in the past, and they continue to exceed expectations, with fun and adventure!! Yep, I'd use 'em again, any day!!!

We had an amazing couple of days with the folks at Far Flung Outdoor! I had worked with Lexie on a custom Jeep tour leading up to our stay. She was super nice and helped with everything down to the T. Super responsive and friendly! When we checked in, it was with Bill the owner. He was super friendly and wanted to make sure your stay was enjoyable. Gave great direction about the property and info about the area. We met Chris later that afternoon that took us on our Jeep tour. We had a blast! He is a plethora of information and such a pleasure to chat with! We have been coming to the Big Bend area a couple times a year since 2018. It’s our 2nd home. I don’t know why it took us so long to stay here! This is by far the friendliest, most informative, and caring people you will meet that just want you to have a great time! This is what Terlingua is about! Staying here is a priority for us going forward along with our friends and family!

What a great experience! We went on a half day kayak trip down the Rio Grande. It was perfect weather and such a fun and relaxing trip. Even the inexperienced can do it and have a blast.
Far Flung made it easy. We met up at the Outdoor Center and followed the guides to the finish point where we dropped off our cars. We loaded up in their vans and drove to the starting point, got briefed on water safety and we’re properly fitted for our life jackets. We had four guides with us because we did have several canoes and kayaks on this trip. The guides are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable giving cool information about the area along the trip down the river. We had a short stop the get a cold drink and a little snack which they provided then we got back on the river for the last half of the trip. There were several small rapids which were fun to ride down too.
I highly recommend Far Flug!! This is a must do.

First class staff, facilities and equipment. We stayed onsite at the Casitas, and wow, so nice.
Lucky to have the river level high enough, to use kayaks and the guide service. Very well organized and again, they have everything to make the kayaking experience awesome.
Read all the instructions the day before your trip, for great insight. I’d recommend bringing tight fitting water sandals or your oldest pair of throwaway tennis shoes, water bottle, bathing suit, quick drying shirt, hat, suntan lotion, waterproof phone case, and crew tip money in a plastic sandwich bag.
Thank you Adriana and all the staff from Far Flung.

Great experience! We originally booked just a half day river trip. Water levels were low, so they took us to the hot springs canyon. Views were beautiful, and the hot springs were too! Our guides were super friendly and gave us a lot of recommendations on other things to see/do in Big Bend. Bill, who helped us out at the front counter, was also incredibly friendly and helpful. We had no idea the property had lodging and a pool until our guides mentioned it. After Bill showed us around the property we ended up booking a room for the night! He was very attentive and made sure we were set up with everything, and was an all around joy to chat with. The room was clean and comfortable, and the pool was a great escape from the heat during the afternoon. The property is only a 15min drive from the park, is very close to the gas station, and even has a little coffee shop out front. This resort is such a little gem tucked away in Big Bend! I have been recommending it to everyone. The cabins are roomy, super clean, well appointed and just perfect for the environment. They have an actual coffee shop that opens up at 7 AM with delicious pastries and coffee. Every evening there is a fire pit that runs for hours. There’s a pool & hot tub. The grounds are beautiful and the people are so friendly. It was absolutely perfect, the only thing wrong with our trip is we didn’t get to spend enough time in Big Bend so next time we will stay longer and we will definitely stay at the far-flung resort!!! Our group of 4 adults and 1 seven year old went on the half day guided canoe trip yesterday and it was Fantastic!! Not only did they lead us and follow up at the end of the group to assist in the shallow waters they also educated us on the mountain terrain history and plants and shared in a lot of laughs. It was all women who gave us the tour and loaded up the boats and gear and we were thoroughly impressed with their teamwork and knowledge and muscles 💪 Girls Rocked that trip and we all made lasting vacation memories that they will be part of. Can’t wait to go for an all day trip in a few months! Thank you, Olivia, Hanah, Anna, and Caroline you all did a magnificent job!

We didn't compare outfitter services, but I cannot imagine anyone being better. The guides are passionate about what they do and communicate extremely well. When I called to get advice on activities to book, Bill helped me walk through all the options. No rush. He seemed genuinely happy to help. Our river float and jeep tour themselves are two of the best excursions my family has ever done, and we've done some cool stuff on other trips. Facilities were very clean, and their merch was reasonably priced and cool. We learned a lot and had so much fun. I cannot recommend Far Flung enough.

Cant wait to stay with them again soon!
A great way to spend a day in Big Bend!
Our original goal was rafting but due to the low level of the Rio Grande, we ended up in canoes instead.
John was our guide down the river and we had so much fun! We stopped by the hot springs for a swim before eating lunch. Then John took us on a short walk to see the remains of an old resort and hieroglyphics on the walls of the cliffs. Our trip then continued down the river through a series of rapids and into the canyons. John was great at pointing out wildlife and other points of interest along the way. We also enjoyed seeing the horses that come up on the side of the river that borders Mexico.
If you have more than one day to spend in Big Bend, I highly recommend taking a trip down the Rio Grande with Big Bend River Tours. If you are lucky enough to get John for your tour guide, then you are guaranteed to have a great float!

My husband and I took the tour. We signed up for the all day tour because the half day was filled. We were a little worried that it would be too long and exhausting. The total trip 8 am to 4 pm was long, but much of it spent in the van getting a tour entering the park and loading, unloading, and eating lunch. So it was about four hours actually on the river and it was not hard paddling. It was very hot but the guides got us into shade as much as they could. They provided water and lunch. The water level was low when we went so we used canoes. It was enjoyable and it was made much more enjoyable by the guides who shared stories and knowledge of the region and its history. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Texas and New Mexico.
If you are looking for rapids and lots of excitement you will need to go when the water level is high.

Great place to go for a river trip. Staff is very courteous and informative. The river was low but we were able to still go and have an enjoyable time. James our river guide went above and beyond helping us through the low rocky areas. He is very knowledgeable about the area and more than willing to share with guests.

Incredible experience with BBRT, each and every guide is there to make sure you have the best possible time while staying safe. The views are astonishing and the Santa Elena cannot be experienced any other way.
I recommend the all day tour and lunch in Fern Canyon, ask for Jarod and Darron!! Two of the coolest guys on the water with a wealth of knowledge of the area and pretty much life itself.

Our Dark Canyon trip was great. Even though the water was low, we enjoyed the beautiful scenery and the peaceful paddle. Our guide Sage was very knowledgeable about the local history and geology and was very willing to share! Oh, and even though we had accidentally booked for the wrong Wednesday, the team at BBRT was able to put a trip together for us in 15 minutes!

We had a great experience canoeing on the river. Alex and Ernesto work great as a team. Ernesto is a wealth of information. We would do this excursion again in a heartbeat. There’s just one snag in the adventure experience. Ernesto appears to be providing lots of information on the trip to the site where we put in on the river. Unfortunately, the people in the second to last row of the van hear very little and the people ( me and my wife in this case) in the last row hear basically nothing. If there could be a solution to this, it would have been perfect all around. Thanks

Matt is an AWESOME guide and made everyone feel confident on the river! He was knowledgeable and made sure everyone stayed safe and most importantly was having a great time!!!! The canoe trip was BEAUTIFUL we saw many species of birds, turtles, and even saw an auodad on the cliff above! We felt so safe parking our vehicle at the river tour HQ and had fun shopping in the retail space before our trip.
Thanks again Big Bend River Tours and Matt!!!

Excellent river outfitter in Terlingua!
Friendly front office staff, easy reservation process!
Guides were knowledgeable and energetic!
Air conditioned vans to transport you to and from the Rio Grande.
There was only one tour operating when we visited, Hot Springs Canyon. This is a leisurely canoe float to an old hot springs resort that is now defunct. Easy one mile hike up the cliffs for great views!
Canoes were well maintained. Our tour included lunch and PLENTY of water. Refill water often - you’ll need it!
If we come back to Big Bend, we’d book with this group again!

Highly recommend. This was a fantastic way to spend our first day at Big Bend! The staff and guides were helpful and courteous. They made sure everyone had a wonderful day on the river. One of our guides, Tanner, was awesome and especially nice to my son. He answered the millions of questions he had about birds in the park. James and Matt were great too and shared lots of interesting information. We had a wonderful time and can’t wait to go back!

Hot Springs Canoe Trip. We had a blast canoeing down the Rio Grand with Tanner. The screnery was awesome. We hiked to the top of the cliff side that had fantastic views before soaking in the hot spring which was very relaxing. Tanner was very helpful with everything from launching the canoes to serving lunch. He was also very knowledgeable about the park, giving us several ideas on hikes, views, drives, etc for our upcoming days in the park. Thank you for a great experience!

What a great day in Big Bend! We did the Hot Springs route. It was gorgeous but the best part was how knowledgeable our guides Tanner and Crosby were! We learned so much about the area. Our highlight was Crosby's cactus nature walk. It changed the rest of our hikes as we saw the area in a new light...and found another blooming Texas Rainbow on the Emory Peak trail!

Our 1 day trip to Hot Springs via Canoe was enjoyable. Our guide James shared his 30+ year knowlege of area, river, flora and fauna as we gently oared down river (very low water volume). Other customers were all PhDs in marine biology, geology and forestry and James imparted humor and lessons of the river to us all! Would absolutely recommend booking day+ longer trip(s) w/Big Bend River Tours.

My fiance and I took a half day canoe river tour, and it was great! Our guide was great, and super knowledgeable about the area's plants, geography, local history, and of course, river safety! The trip through the state park was wonderful, with great views.
We had a wonderful experience with the Big Bend Stables! We took a 2 hour trip with the older boys and our 5 year old got to experience the kiddy corral. Our two guides were knowledgeable and super sweet!! Would highly recommend. :)

Such a fun and memorable experience! We stayed at Lajitas and had done a trail ride at their resort stables earlier in the week but loved this one much more! The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating and the ride was much more scenic. The guides do a great job of pointing out interesting facts and tidbits along the way which we loved. This was my 7 year olds first time to ride, he loved it, and his horse Marty was perfect! We loved our guides Shelby and Haley and Deb was also so kind and helpful! We will definitely recommend to friends visiting Big Bend!

LOVE Big Bend Stables! Cannot recommend more highly. As an experienced rider who actually does not typically like trail rides, I enjoyed every minute of my sunset ride in Terlingua. The guides were great, the scenery was majestic, but the horses (and mules, like my sweet mount, Tank) were the best part. They're SO well taken care of and clearly all have jobs they enjoy. Each of these animals took such good care of their riders and while everyone else in the group was quite inexperienced, everyone voiced being comfortable and feeling safe. Very much a family friendly adventure too. Cannot wait to come back! Thanks Tank, you're a good boy!

Ella and Bart were our wranglers who first paired each of us in our group of nine to a gentle horse befitting our experience/size. They then guided us along well worn desert trails down into rocky dry creek beds and up rather steep inclines. The whole experience was a little scary for someone (me) with almost no experience but it was so fun. And the views were spectacular.
Dick McCabe — Google review
Great hospitality! Thanks for a wonderful morning ride, Miss Ella! Really good experience for the kids. Even though it was a trail ride that the horses do everyday, the horses were NOT on autopilot, and you definitely still had to ride them. Loved the different terrain and engaging scenery along the route.

Loved our experience with Big Bend Stables! You can bring a carrots or apples for the horses but I would recommend trying to give it before you go out because they go straight to water after the ride. We did the sunset ride and it was the perfect balance of structure and adventure. The guides were very knowledgable about the land and in general just fun to talk to. They gave us tips for the rest of our trip that was really helpful. You could tell they loved what they did and they loved the horses. I’ve done a lot of horseback tours in different countries and this one was my favorite by far.

What a great experience. Evo was the best guide we could hope for. The horses were calm, well behaved trail horses. My 9yr old and 11yr old kids had no trouble with their horses. I'm about 240lbs, so they put me on an all white horse named Shrek. He was great. He Followed my commands as if I rode him every day. The scenery was level 11, and Evo prepared a lunch of Smoked Chicken and Cowboy Caviar. If you are considering a family horse ride in Big Bend, I highly recommend this stable.

Evo was great at showing us the ropes (literally). We did the 2 hour tour up mesas and down into creekbeds. The landscape is beautiful here. Horses were very easy going and comfortable. They are very well kept and happy. They definitely knew what they were doing with new riders. Recommend a lot!

This was an awesome horse ride and during the most beautiful sunset!! These horses are so well trained, for the most part, they don't even need a rider to guide them. 😉 I haven't ridden a horse in years, so this was a phenomenal and enjoyable experience. Our tour guide (so sorry i forgot your name) was very helpful, entertaining, and observant for everyone's safety throughout the tour!.....only "raw" point, my butt was extremely sore for days after😆

Store name accurately reflects what is in the store, there are indeed many stones here.
In addition to stones, there are some interesting items such as knives, plants, and an interesting book about some stores originating out of Terlingua. Worth checking out, owner is very nice.

The Chimneys offer a stunning and picturesque hike, particularly during the spring season when an array of vibrant wildflowers bloom to enhance the scenery. The petroglyphs found in this area add a captivating touch, showcasing fascinating ancient art. The trail itself spans over 10 miles, providing a secluded experience as it's uncommon to come across fellow hikers along the way. Overall, The Chimneys boast natural beauty and historical significance that make it truly enchanting for those who venture there.
Hiked over 10 miles without seeing another person, just lovely.

The Chimneys are a tall and rocky ridge, with Indian petroglyphs on one of the pinnacles. It's a long, featureless and rather boring 4.8 mile return walk to reach the rocky outcrop. Nice views when you get there.

Lower Burro Mesa Pour-off Trail is a brief yet breathtaking hike accessible from the Ross Maxwell scenic drive. The mile-long gravel path culminates in a stunning 100-foot-tall vertical dry waterway carved into the rock. While enjoyable for families, hikers should be cautious when returning as two trails converge without clear signage. It is recommended to remain on the left side of the path when coming back.
Underrated easy 1-mile round trip flat hike right off the main road with plenty of parking since it wasn't crowded at all. Nice walk through cactuses that ends at a stellar canyon wall.

A short but fun destination trail on the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. There were a healthy amount of blooms when I went and quite a few reptiles. There are attractive mountain views along the trail, especially at sunset.
Sotol Vista Overlook is a must-visit spot in Big Bend National Park, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the western side of the park and Santa Elena Canyon in the distance. The overlook provides an almost 360-degree view, allowing visitors to see the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive winding through the Chisos mountain range. It's particularly popular for watching summer sunsets, and there's ample parking as well as a restroom facility.
I highly recommend stopping here. There are a lot of parking spaces but it is a busy stop. There are restrooms here. Take in all of the view, walk around and enjoy this time. You can see so much and it is all beautiful.

Sotol Vista has a beautiful view of the summer sunset. It's a fair drive from any campground but worth it. The parking area has enough room for a couple of dozen cars. There's also a single bathroom stall just in case nature calls while you're in the middle of almost nowhere. Arrive an hour before sunset for easy parking and the full experience of the sky color change.

The trail features intermittent cascading waterfalls and jagged rock formations that are only visible during certain times of the year. This outdoor trek is an ideal choice for those who want to experience nature's beauty up close while traversing along rustic terrain. Strenuous hike. Wear tough, closed-toe shoes. This ain’t no trail fit for flip flops or sandals! Temperatures during the hot seasons (so basically March through October) can become dangerously high, so choose your hike schedule carefully. Bring tweezers and other first aid...nearly every plant along the trail has some type of stabby stabby needles, spines, or thorn clusters. But all warnings aside, this trail is possibly the crown jewel of the park. Spectacular views of the valley below, and the hike down to the window offers hundreds of beautiful scenic views.

amazing end to this trail. It does seem repetitive at first. But well worth the journey! The last half mile is a lot of cool stuff. I went before sunset and ended up being the only one on the trail... guess no one else wanted to walk back in complete blackness(a bit scary when by yourself)... be sure to bring a head lamp if you plan on doing this. Thankfully got to the end before the sun got too low(see photos). I wish I left maybe 30 minutes earlier though to enjoy the end more.

Google maps will get you to the right general area but will try to get you to the trailhead. There is no parking at the trailhead. When you turn onto the campground, follow the signs for hiker parking. The parking lot is about a 2-minute walk through the campground to get to the trailhead. It is a little difficult because there is no set path to get to the trailhead.
This is a downhill hike. It's a beautiful walk with great views of the mountains, and there are lots of plants, insects and birds to see along the way. The hike back is an uphill hike, but it is a gentle upward slope.
The bathrooms at the trailhead are very clean.

Out and back. The out is easier than the back, so just be aware if not in decent shape. To get all the way to the window may require some slight improvising toward the end. A few options for parking spots so just double check all your options for best available.

A beautiful and moderate hiking trail in Big Bend national park. The view and sceneries along the trails are amazing. There are several Rock formations and the terrain changes along the way. It's not that difficult trail . It's about 6 miles Round-trip. The terrain have several elevation changes. I'll never travel to Big Bend National Park without this trip planner again
Emory Peak is a prominent summit in Texas, named after William H. Emory who led the U.S. Boundary Survey team in 1852. The area offers great opportunities for hiking and boasts spectacular trails, though caution must be exercised when hiking before dawn due to the presence of mountain lions and bears.
Hard Trial!!! Go with the proper planned with water and necessary costumes. Once you reach the peak it’s an awesome movie you feel like standing above all the big bend peaks. That feel is extraordinary.
Well worth it. Took us just under 8 hours including the hour plus we spent at the top. You definitely could do this in under 6 but we took it at a slow and steady pace.
The final half mile of the trail is very technical with lots of rocks to navigate. We had to stow our trekking poles and slowly work our way to the top.
Once at the top it took us a little to figure out what way to go to climb to the peak.
But going around the right (northern) side seemed the best way to go. We were able to climb at more of an angle instead of going straight up the center which was more of a vertical climb.
I was able to do it with my relatively large backpack. It definitely isn't for the faint of heart but the
"scramble" up was worth it. The hardest part was finding a way up.
Also it's the right (northern) peak not the left (southern) peak.
Poovalagan Jagadeeswaran — Google review
Excellent views, worth the moderate hike up.
Matthew Barnes — Google review
Where are we going? See the highest part of that mountain? That's where!
What an outstanding hike... but be prepared! Here's what you need to know.
#1. You're gonna travel about 11 miles
#2. The elevation gain is about 2500 feet
#3. It's a there and back trail so the elevation loss will be about 2500 feet
#4. It will take around 6 hours... give or take an hour
#5. To get to the peak can be confusing at the end... you will have to do a little climbing.
So yeah... be ready for an amazing and beautiful hike. It's a crazy journey that can be pretty challenging if you do not realize what you are getting into.
Water, food, and a way to protect yourself from the sun are super important things and trekking poles can be pretty helpful coming back down.
Be aware of your surroundings and keep the park clean!

This is definitely great place for hiking in Texas. The trail was spectacular. If you are hiking before dawn, watch out for mountain lions and bears. I waited for the sunrise after a group of hikers were coming back and warning me about those beasts. It took me about 8 hours drive from ATX. The reason for 4 star is, you can find way better places for hiking and camping in New Mexico if you are ready to drive that long. Been once, but I am not sure it will worth to visit another time.
servet oksuz — Google review
Challenging hike but accessible for the average hiker. From the beginning of the Pinnacles Trail to the peak and back it’s an 11-mile trek with around 6000’ elevation climb. Great views from the peak, but be prepared for the small rock scramble to the tip top, it’s not for the faint of heart.
Nate Saffle — Google review
Excellent hike and views. Quite strenuous, especially the last 50ft, which requires climbing steep boulders and rocks with sheer cliff edges close by. We completed Emory peak as part of a two day hike around the south rim. There are bear boxes and a composting toilet located 1.5 miles from the top which we utilized both;). Leaving our packs at the bear box and just bringing water/snack made the hike up to the peak much more enjoyable.
My 12 year old son and I went to the top, but use your own judgement since the last 50ft are very steep and require reaching and climbing, so much so that there were several adult males in other groups who chose not to climb it. This is an excellent hike with awestriking views even if you refrain from this last section. It truly gave us the opportunity to lift up our eyes and see who created these magnificent works of art!
Tim Anderson — Google review
Climbed here a few years ago before doing the outer mountain loop. Absolutely awesome and a great detour on our trip. At the fork in the trail where you would go up the mountain or continue on the loop there was a bear box for our packs. Which made climbing way better.
There is a little cave at the top as well, someone had casually taken a dump in it so that wasn’t cool but other than that it was pretty nice.
Definitely the best view you can get in the entire park, as long as you are in shape the climb to the peak was not bad, but there was a bit of a vertical climb. Climbing down was harder than climbing up but I didn’t not feel unsafe at any point.
BennyCriss12 — Google review
This is a 10 mile roundtrip hike with an elevation gain of 2500 feet. Not very difficult with beautiful views, this is the highest peak in Bid Bend National Park. The views of the basin are really beautiful, and since Big Bend National Park is virtually unknown , it makes for wonderful moments of solitude.
Rolf Shmidt — Google review
Spectacular if not moderately challenging hike. Switchbacks can be brutal and on a very sunny day, it hardly feels cooler than on the desert floor. Definitely worth the effort though, see Alltrails for detailed trail reviews and maps.
Ulyses Yakovlevich — Google review
This hike is definitely worth doing if you don’t mind a little rock climbing. The bit at the very end (the last fifty feet or so) was a bit more advanced than we were comfortable with, but lots of folks were doing it and made it look easy. I wish we would have instead hiked to the South Rim so as not have had the experience of missing the summit by fifty feet.
Everett Gossard — Google review
Much better than expected. We visited the last week of 2019 and it was perfect weather. The hike is also very nice, the first few miles is fairly easy. The last mile or so is the hardest but its not that difficult overall. Views from any of the viewpoints are phenomenal. The crowds down at the visitor center and parking lot were larger than expected but the trail was fairly quiet. Highly recommend for anyone contemplating this place.
The S Rim Trail at Big Bend National Park is a challenging 12.6-mile loop that offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The hike involves an elevation gain of approximately 2000 feet and requires hikers to carry plenty of water and snacks. The trail features two campsites - Pinnacles site 1 and Colima site 1 - both equipped with bear boxes and ample space for camping.
13.7 mile hike. Beautiful views. About 2000 ft of elevation change. Bring water and snacks.

I have rode the South Rim Trail a few times. The most recent time, I took my children. For them to see the ' untouched by human' senic beauty was a thrill for me. The best part, it was a clear day. Since the South Rim is the place where you can see the most in the WESTERN HEMISPHERE, being clear weather is the most important factor. I have never hiked the trail. Most hike up on one day and return the next. I was amazed with all the animals who had no fear of us. Squirrels and birds are straight out of our hands. Big Bend National Park is delightful with its diversity of things to see and extremes in landscapes.
The Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park offer a range of hiking trails and diverse wildlife, including various bird species and ants. One popular route is the Lost Mine Trail, which offers stunning views from the mountain summit. The Window Trail also provides scenic sights but requires a moderate level of endurance due to its constant incline. It's recommended to bring water on all hikes and for those who prefer an easier trail before attempting Emory Peak, Lost Mine is a good starting point.
It’s an awesome drive, beautiful Mountains rough dessert terrain cool weather 80 degrees when in San Antonio it was 101

We hiked the Lost Mine and the Window Trail! Together on the same day, it was quite difficult. For the Lost Mine, it was straight up the mountain on the way up. For the Window, it was inclined the whole way back. So lots of elevation change as a warning. I am so glad we got to see the views from both! The views from the top of the mountain at Lost Mine is GORGEOUS! I see why it’s the most popular trail.

One of the best hikes you can go in the big bend. The view was breathtaking. I rate this route as easy to moderate due to it contains some sudden climbs. All ways don’t forget your water bottle. If you are not confident of trying the Emory peak from the first try may be it’s better to try this one first

As a kid my parents would take us on vacations in Big Bend almost every summer. The hiking trails, Santa Elena Canyon, and Boquillas Canyon we're beautiful. We always stayed in the Basin in the camping area, either in tents or travel trailer. The memories have stayed with me and would love to go back again soon.

Camping here on Thanksgiving years ago. I took photos and painted a pastel of Casa Grande.

The Lost Mine Trail is a challenging mountain hiking route that spans almost 5 miles and has an elevation gain of more than 1,000 feet. It offers stunning views of the canyon scenery along the way and is well-suited for experienced hikers. The trail provides an opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the area while enjoying a good workout in the great outdoors.
Good to do this trail in the morning so you have more time to sight seeing and take pictures and pace yourself for the 2.4 miles (4.8miles round trip) hike.
Impt: before starting the trail, do give a read of all the precautions and safety aspects pertaining to this hike as there are bears and mountain lions. Picnic is definitely a “no no” as it lures the wild. Park rangers also post on signage that the food in the car has to be securely packed, window closed and etc to prevent wildlife like bears and mountain lions from approaching public and vehicles. So do have a good breakfast before starting the hike.
There are wild Mexican jay, whitetail deers roaming around the trail. This trail can be a moderate or strenuous hike, probably it’s the last 10-15 mins to the peak for worthy scenic views might be challenging to first time hiker. The last 1 mile to the trail peak is cold and windy in Spring, so any unsecured cap or hat may be blown off. There is no toilets along this trail. Human waste must be buried 6’ deep, at least 100 yards from the trail or any water source / drainage. So pack out your toilet papers. Overall is a satisfying scenic trail to hike 😊.

5 miles, 1100 feet of elevation gain, a short hike of 3 hours total with beautiful views at the top. Somewhat busy as it is very approachable, show up early to get a parking spot, I overnighted in the park for early access.

This is a great hike in Big Bend National Park. The trail is labeled as moderate but I would label it moderate to strenuous. The last 1/2 mile or so of the trail is pretty steep with switchbacks. That part was strenuous. But the view up top is worth it! The trail was around 8 miles out and back. The trail has beautiful views with every turn. Arrive early (like before 8:00) to get a parking spot in the morning and hike when it isn’t as hot. There are spots available in the afternoon but I don’t imagine hiking this when it is hot would be as enjoyable.

Gorgeous hike! Don't stop at the Vista one mile up, it takes a while but at the top the trail crests the ridge with a view on both sides (most of the trail is up one side) and the hike ends at a stunning panoramic view. Up hill basically the whole way out, so come prepared for stairs. Show up early. We took the last parking spot at the trailhead at 0900

The hike was challenging in a few areas, so a moderate difficulty level is apt for the description of the trail. The views from the top of the trail are absolutely stunning! I can't wait to do this trail again in the future.

Awesome trail. Great views. Get there early as the parking lot fills up fast. I enjoyed getting at
trailhead a little after sunrise since the colors will change dramatically as you hike up. It took us 3 hours back and out.
4.8 miles. 1224 elevation gain.

Came later in the day after 4pm and it was pretty empty. Wanted to beat the darkness so we hiked up in 1h 15mins, and back down in 1h 5min. Overall hike was pretty tiring going up. Bring plenty of water and take breaks! View was worth it and peaceful since we were alone. Didn’t see any bears or mountain lions! No bathrooms on-site. Only trash bins and storage if you accidentally bring food so bears don’t come by.
The Pine Canyon Trail is a scenic hiking route renowned for its natural beauty. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, with diverse flora and fauna dotting the path. This trail provides an opportunity to immerse oneself in nature's magnificence, as it winds through lush forests and opens up to panoramic vistas. The trail's serenity and tranquility make it an ideal destination for avid hikers seeking solace amidst the great outdoors.
Beautiful hike. The foliage smells amazing. First half is kind of boring, but it pays off during the second half.
