Close to the highway, parking available, a short stroll via simple walkway to the waterfall. Toilets available, did not check them out hence could not comment about cleanliness. Got very close to the fall which was super pleasant experience.

Didn’t go down the trail but the view of the falls was nice. The water is a bit green and sludgy aka slippery, but it’s not like I wanted to walk across so it was no real issue for me (it was for the guy that ended up crawling back to the bank after walking to the middle). Ended up kayaking at the bottom of the falls which was super nice! Would recommend going over to the hotel place to hire a kayak, $15 per kayak :)
Jasmine Te Wake — Google review
Can walk or cycle to the falls from Paihia. Best route though is the organised kayak tour in a boat and then the final stretch by kayak. Great views from within touching distance of the falls and the preceding river.
Andrew Tallack — Google review
For the very first time I went there in June 2023 which was still wintertime in NZ and it did not dissapoint. It was a rainy day but it still was quite impressive. A place where you might want to hang out for a while because it is hard to get bored by the view of it.
Not too difficult to reach without the car if you do like walking. But for those with the cars, there is a parking spot and public WC next to it.
Evelīna Kalvāne — Google review
A great place to see a waterfall up close. Just a minute from the carpark. You can stand right beside the waterfall for photo. There are massive fishes at the bottom too.
Raymond Goh — Google review
Absolutely stunning view from the campsite of the falls
There is a bonus at night time when the falls light up - Michael is an awesome man - very friendly - and accommodating- and his dog Mistro is pretty cute - would recommend to others. We atayed one night and will go back after being in Paihia for another two nights - so relaxing 😊
Gayle Sills — Google review
There’s two ways to reach the Haruru Falls, a trail about 6KM long or drive your car next to the fall. Fall is about 10 meters with an impressive noice that you could hear from the car park. It’s good that there’s a toilet around.
Marville Badua — Google review
Amazing waterfall the view and a great stop on the way to Paihia. Good parking and toilet facilities. For those up for a walk exit the carpark on the left and take the pathway to the left. This takes you through to Waitangi Treaty Grounds approx 6kms. Walk to the mangroves and bridge 3kms on way. Excellent views of the river and inlet. Good selection bird life to spot, tui, wood pigeons, shags who often nest in the trees to name a few.
Dianne Miller — Google review
Omg what a wonderful place is this, you can see the falls too close to you very nice.
Shiri Lakshmi — Google review
Beautiful waterfall. Right off the road, carpark is right next to the path. The path is literally less than a 30 second walk to the waterfall.
Worth the short detour to look at.
If you look carefully around the bushes you will see six roosters who like to call this area home as well.
Loren Randall — Google review
Waterfall near the main road. Small car park for about 5 cars. There are trash can, toilets and some chickens going around there. It's suitable for short visit.
Chloe Dang — Google review
This is a free attraction, so very good value for money! This did mean it was incredibly busy and also because it was a public holiday. Hard to get a selfie without others encroaching on the picture, but still an amazing spot, worth a look.
Wendi Jenni — Google review
So many funky chickens! The falls are lovely, but the chickens steal the show. The toilets are very clean and pleasant. Definitely recommend stopping by!

Haruru Falls💦💦 is a 5m high waterfall near the settlement of Haruru in the Far North District, about 5km West of Paihia.
In Te Reo Māori the word "Haruru" means "continuous noise" or "roar" 🔊 The lagoon on the downstream side of the falls was New Zealand's 🇳🇿 first river port, used by both Māori and early missionaries ⛪️
This is where the mighty Waitangi River is strongest 😲 and the Haruru Falls walking track 🚶♀️🚶♂️follows the water as it ebbs towards the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and out into the Bay ⛵️
It is a short walk 🚶♀️ to the falls from the Haruru carpark 🚗 There are a few steep steps
The track is about 6km 😰 and will take you (not me) 2.5 hours to walk one way. It’s a ‘there and back track’ so you can either park your car 🚗 by the entrance to the track at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, or in the carpark at Haruru Falls. Parts of it is quite a nice walk, but a lot of it is steep with steps.
Joanie Badenhorst-Awasthi — Google review
The falls were beautiful and powerful but the walk was soooo peaceful. Would highly recommend

Small waterfall located near pahaia city. Easy to get to. Beautiful views. Visit after 6 pm in summer.

So these falls are no “niagra” but worth having a look and maybe a swim if you’re nearby. Can get busy with tourists taking photos and on canoes.
The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a significant historical site in New Zealand, located on a headland adorned with lawns and vegetation. On 6 February 1840, the British Crown signed the Treaty of Waitangi with the Maori people here, with over 500 chiefs eventually adding their signatures. The admission fee includes a guided tour and cultural performance as well as entrance to the Museum of Waitangi, Whare Runanga (carved meeting house), and historic Treaty House.
We last came over 10+ years ago and found so much has changed since. There is a entrance fee for Adults, but children are free. Show your NZ Driver's License to pay the NZ Resident price. The cultural show is totally worth it and we learnt a lot about the Maori culture. Lots of places to explore and the kids enjoyed answering the questions related to each place of interest

Scenic ground, with beach access. We could not get tickets as the place was all sold out but enjoyed the cafe. Prefect picnic spot. We will definitely plan to visit it soon again and hopefully next time with tickets booked in advance.
Vidhu Rai — Google review
What a great day. We booked a guided tour and learnt a lot about the history of the Waitangi Treaty and the part the Maoris played in the war. The cultural experience in the meeting house was well worthwhile too. Hubby and I were really pleased we went.

Wonderful morning at Waitangi! Had a guided tour and cultural experience which I would recommend. Museum was good and the grounds were stunning in the sunshine!

Incredible and humbling experience. We booked the Hāngi and Concert and felt honoured to have experienced the Māori culture, history, hospitality and generosity.
The museums are incredible and packed with must-know history.
The forests were beautiful too - lots of birds to see!

Excellent, cultural, and historical experience. Every aspect of this well organized tour was first class. Friendly guides helped educate us on Maori history and culture. It's definitely a lot to see and appreciate. Try and spend as much time as you can soaking up the beauty of this wonderful place.
David Sage — Google review
Amazing place! 30$ to get into the museum and surrounding area, it was totally worth it when I got to the Wharenui (Māori communal house) and experienced, for the first time, the traditional greetings and explanation of the culture. If you're in Paihia, definitely stop by. Amazing views of the ocean and a lot of history.
Michael Nagel — Google review
A must do for everyone. We took the 50 min conducted tour at no extra cost. Brilliant commentary... filled in many gaps in my knowledge of our country's history. We also took in the cultural experience... brilliant too.

A place deep in culture and knowledge.
There is something here for all ages to learn.

We took a tour of the treaty grounds. The guide was nice and very knowledgeable and the tour itself was very interesting. At the end we experienced Mauri welcoming ceremonial which was great and also funny.

Explore the essential history of New Zealand's formation as a nation with a visit to this museum. The guided tour delves into the reconciliation between the local Māori and the British, culminating in the signing of the peace treaty. The well-maintained and captivating museum is a beautiful experience. For history enthusiasts, a pro tip: visit on your first day as tickets grant entry on the following day as well. Don't miss the 30-minute Māori cultural show, adding an extra layer of enrichment to your visit.
Nevil Sanghvi — Google review
Quite a unique experience! Our guide was fabulous in telling the story and the history. The cultural demonstration was amazing. The museum is so explicit and educational.

Steeped in history and well presented for all. The Cultural Experience is well worth seeing. Take you time to walk around where you can. The tour is a great way to see the grounds and the guides are well knowledgeable and friendly.

We're from Australia so found the guided tour and cultural experience excellent.
Very interesting and entertaining with comprehensive knowledge shared by the guides.
The cafe closes early so if you want food don't leave it until after 2.30
Peter Buggy — Google review
A very beautiful and historic place.
The history surrounding it is well portrayed in the museums and the complementary guided tour. The culture of the Māori well portrayed in the complimentary cultural performance and the gift shop is of very high quality. Only the café was subpar.
Can highly recommend going.
Luna Sunal — Google review
A must see if visiting Paihia. It's an incredible place of historical significance as the treaty grounds really showcase that. The museum to recognise the Maori who fought in copious wars is beautifully done and really touching. The show is incredible and the views across the bay are surreal. Definitely worth the money and needs at least half a day to make the most of it all.
Holly Davies — Google review
Interesting visit and lots to see the Waitangi museum, Maori Arts, ceremonial Waka, Treatyhous, Te whare Runanga. It's value only 30$ for residents and 60$ for international tourists. Especially the 30 minute show at Te whare Runanga special traditional greetings and Maori songs gave me goosebumps.
A place that should not be missed when you come to this area. Come and feel.
Chloe Dang — Google review
Goosebumps.
So much to unpack here. You enter the treaty grounds and the tour does a great job in making you visualize the importance of this place in terms of New Zealad history with every step and every word.
An absolute must for history fans, and everyone in general.
We finished things off with a cultural ceremony performed by local Maori group which was emotional and a real privilege to see.
Great souvenirs too!

If you’re looking for a some genuine Māori culture and history, then this is the spot for you.
The site is steeped in culture and history and, if you time it right you can get so see how Māori and modern cultures interact.
Gardens and site well worth the tour.

So much history in this beautiful place. Be sure to get tickets for the cultural performance and the guided tour. The museums are all very well done. The history of the relationship between the British and the Maori people has always been complex and continues to be so today. As people from another country, we visited the Treaty Grounds at the very beginning of our trip as an introduction to this important part of New Zealand. We very much appreciated the depth of information available here.
Susan Smith — Google review
Spent half the day here with my wife. The museum, guided tour, cultural experience, and the grounds in general were all top notch.
There is so much history of the Maori people and the impact of colonisation to be found here. Highly recommend visiting. Make sure you set a few hours aside at a minimum as there is a lot to be found here.

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds in New Zealand offer a profound glimpse into the nation's history, serving as the site where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. Visitors can explore beautifully landscaped grounds, learn about Maori culture, and witness cultural performances, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking to understand New Zealand's cultural and historical heritage.

A great museum and historical destination to explore New Zealand’s unique Maori culture and heritage. The Grounds is beautiful built. A must visit if you’re around far north of New Zealand. The admission fee is $30 for New Zealander ( remember to bring your NZ ID, e.g driver’s license); $60 for international visitors, I think it is quite dear for overseas visitors.
Maggie Chen — Google review
You must visit here when travelling to New Zealand. It’s an emotional, educational cultural experience. It’s so beautiful and the grounds are extremely well kept. All the staff were lovely and the shop was well stocked and reasonably priced. The cafe was also very good- a lot of food, cakes and drinks again all at a good price.

If you're interested Maori history and culture, this is a great place to visit. I'd opt for the tour, but maybe hop out a little early for the hakka. Plan to spend at least 2 hours to a full day here. Enjoy the history, soak in the culture.
Trypp Adams — Google review
A very interesting place. The guided tour as well as the cultural performance were very informative, and our guide was a really funny guy.
In the evening I had a Hāngi, a mal cooked in a traditinal Maori way in in a hole in the ground. It was great.
The popular catamaran excursion takes visitors on a journey to see dolphins and visit a legendary rock formation, which is situated in a Maori freehold site. Paihia, hailed as the jewel of the magnificent Bay of Islands region, offers shimmering safe beaches and ample historical landmarks. A mere 20-minute drive from Kerikeri Airport, this town provides tourists with opportunities to explore its many shops and restaurants located along the waterfront.
Brilliant trip! Fantastic, informative guides. Stunning scenery. An absolutely memorable experience! Great value for money. Highly recommend!

This was a fabulous half day excursion on the water to tour the Bay of Islands. Island Getaway Tours provided a perfectly planned day loaded with information, opportunities to see and appreciate the islands both on and off shore. The crew was friendly and entertaining and made careful to make sure everyone was enjoying the day. We were blessed with perfect weather as well. Highly highly recommend this company and excursion.

Staff were lovely and had great humor!
We saw dolphins! The boat ride were smooth.
Overall a very pleasant experience with a stunning scenery!
Karoline Christensen — Google review
Had a nice cruise whilst on holiday in the area. Didn't get to see the hole in the rock, as the weather was pretty avg, so our tour changed to take in more of the islands in the bay. Very knowledgeable commentary throughout provided by the captain. Take sunscreen. If you're planning on sitting on the open roof, take a hat, and maybe a lightweight waterproof jacket, and not your best shoes... it can be a little bit splashy in choppy weather. Book in advance. Some drinks available to purchase on the boat, and an island stop, for an hour or so, where you can get some food and drinks.
Luc T — Google review
Cruise company were great and the views were amazing. Take sea legs or tripease if you have any tendency towards sea sickness as the waters can get quite choppy (especially if they go out to look for dolphins). Island stopover was good and if you have time to extend then I would highly recommend .
Wendy Chung — Google review
We did hole in the rock and dolphin cruise. I was fantastic. We left from Paihia then stopped briefly in Russell, from there we headed around some of the island where we encountered a small pod of young orcas (killer whales) which was amazing. We then headed to hole in the rock. On the way back we saw a few dolphins also. The captain and crew were really good with the commentary on the history and wildlife. Also a few good jokes thrown in there by the captain.
I know we got lucky with the whales and weather but would highly recommend

Fabulous day out. Perfect weather- sunny and calm- great for the wild life. Spotted penguins, seals and so many dolphins positively showing off around the boat! So much fun to watch. Staff informative and enthusiastic.

We had a superb afternoon cruise. The scenery was spectacular & a group of large bottlenose dolphins - as well as a baby - swam under our bows. We loved the island walk as well. The captain's commentary & stories were great & the crew friendly.

We really enjoyed the trip! The Crew was always super friendly and helpful, our Skipper told a lot of stories and legends with a great sense of humor. The day was fine to sail through the hole in the rock, but unfortunately we didnt see any dolfins or whales.

Worth every penny. We had a super time and spent extra time on the island and caught a later ferry back.
The experience I had with Northland Dive would be right near the top of all my diving trips. They are second to none when it comes to looking after you. I spent 5 nights, 4 days diving with them, based at their lodge and exploring the Bay of Islands and the Canterbury wreck ( which I soon learned is there because of the work of owners, Shane and Julia). We also went out to the Poor Knights Islands for an overnight liveaboard and 7 more dives. The dives are all amazing. The food is great, and there is always plenty of it. Where else can you visit a scuttled frigate one day, then sleep onboard a boat in an enormous sea cave the next?
Jon Clark — Google review
Such a fantastic dive trip with Northland Dive. The liveaboard in the Poor Knights was amazing and then two wonderful dives on HMNZS Canterbury. Julia and Shane run a superb business and along with Liston, we had such a wonderful experience. Will be back in 2025 which is the best type of review! Shout out also for the amazing food throughout! 🦈😁🐟🛥️

Awesome Dive Operators! A big shout out to Northland Dive - Julia, Shane and Liston. Recently, my sister and I had a great dive trip to the Poor Knights Islands with the Northland Dive crew. The liveaboard experience was fantastic. Awesome diving, first night dive, great company, great food! We also used the lodge accommodation before and after the weekend's dive, which was also really good too. Can't recommend highly enough.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Julia and Shane. A very well run operation and each day seemed to outdo the last with the dive sites and weather. Their advice and experience was superb and the liveaboard experience to the Poor Knights Island was spot on. A truly spectacular piece of the world made even more so with their help. Put it on your to do list and do it!

Myself and a party of 6 came up from Wellington to lodge with Northland Dive. The diving was phenomenal and only matched by the outstanding hospitality provided by Julia and Shane. The lodge was gorgeous, the diving was out of this world and their boats were world class. The two are also very knowledgeable about the area and have the insider scoop on all the epic dive sites! 10/10 will come back

Awesome dive trip. I did an overnight out to the Poor Knights. I decided to skip a dive or too as I was so cold (underestimated my ability to stay warm - most of my diving has been in the tropics), but was sooo nice just relaxing on the boat. Definitelyrecommend heading out with Northland Dive for a Poor Knights experience. Fantastic sea life too. The night dive searching for nudibranch is fabulous!! Catered for the fussy eater (I'm vegan) and the good was great.
Carina Daly — Google review
We had the most wonderful time with Northland Dive. The experience from booking to arriving at the milkshed to going on the liveaboard was exemplary. Julia, Shane and Listen were so lovely and made us feel right at home. The food and operation on the boat was incredible. The other divers on our trip were terrific. Diving was awesome with a really nice variety of dives - all those wonderful underwater creatures going about their days. Highlights were seeing large snapper, eagle rays, so many cool scorpion fish, beautiful nudibranchs. Sleeping in Rikoriko cave fun.
Thank you so much Shane, Julia and Listen

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Matapouri Beach in New Zealand, and I must say, it was an absolute delight. From the moment I set foot on the pristine sands to the stunning vistas that surrounded me, this beach is truly a hidden gem.
First and foremost, the natural beauty of Matapouri Beach is awe-inspiring. The crystal-clear turquoise waters are perfect for swimming, and the soft, golden sands are a dream to walk on. The beach is surrounded by a lush coastal landscape, with rolling hills and dramatic cliffs adding to the overall picturesque scene. I couldn't help but feel at one with nature as I soaked in the breathtaking views before me.
What sets Matapouri Beach apart from others is the peaceful and serene ambiance. It is not as crowded or bustling as some of the more popular beaches in New Zealand, allowing visitors to truly relax and unwind in privacy. Whether you are seeking solitude or looking to spend quality time with loved ones, this beach offers the perfect setting for both.
Another highlight of Matapouri Beach is its impressive array of activities and amenities. From water sports such as kayaking and paddleboarding to beautiful walking tracks, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The beach also boasts excellent facilities, including clean public restrooms and picnic areas, making it ideal for a day out with family or friends.
Furthermore, the local community is warm and welcoming, adding to the overall positive experience at Matapouri Beach. The friendly locals offer helpful suggestions on nearby attractions and are always ready to lend a hand or provide any necessary information. Their genuine hospitality only enhances the enjoyment of visiting this stunning beach.
In conclusion, Matapouri Beach in New Zealand is an absolute paradise that deserves all the praise it receives. The combination of jaw-dropping natural beauty, tranquility, and a range of activities and amenities makes it unbeatable. Whether you are a nature enthusiast, an adventure seeker, or simply someone in need of relaxation, Matapouri Beach is the perfect destination. I cannot recommend it enough, and I am already eagerly planning my return visit.

Such a lovely beach, even tried walking up the track that said to whale Bay but didn't go that far. Whale Bay track was too far from the car. The track to Mermaid pools was closed so couldn't see that or go there.

Fabulous beach, no matter what time of year, pretty safe, & not too crowded.

Small area for parking, it's allowed to park overnight for one night. It has public toilets and stairs to access the beach. A very beautiful and quiet place to visit
Danielle Carvalho — Google review
Matapouri Bay can not be described in words or pictures. It's approximately 35km from Whangarei town and its worth driving along Ngunguru, Tutukaka to Matapori Bay. It is also home to NZ's famous Mermaid Pools. The beach is very popular during summer with loads of parking. There is a river before entering Matapouri Bay driving from Tutukaka, it is stunning itself and you can swim or kayak in the river. There is a fish and chips shop and few non-powered camping grounds within walking distance. No fuel stations, ATM, liquor or grocery shops in town so make sure to bring with you. 100% recommended.

We hiked up to the mermaid pool and though the terrain was slightly rough (there are ropes alongside the tougher inclines to help you up and down the route) it was absolutely worth it! The waters were slightly cold but refreshing :)

I'll never travel to Auckland without this trip planner again
Whangarei Falls, located in the Whangarei Scenic Reserve on the Hatea River in New Zealand, is a stunning 85-foot waterfall that attracts many visitors. The falls can be viewed from the top with a short walk to a lookout point, but for the best views, it's recommended to take a walk down through the lush bush to the bottom. During warmer weather, visitors may have the opportunity to swim in the large pool at the base of the falls.
Must Stop in Whangarei. If you local or passing through. Quick 20-30 min loop track will take you to the base of the Whangarei water falls. Not too steep walk. Cruising. Great lunch, picnic spot with public toilets, picnic benches etc.
Malay N — Google review
I was surprised how close the falls are to everything in the town. They are located in a really wonderful park right in the middle of it.
There are many different trails around them, some were a bit muddy from all of the recent rain, but there were alternatives that were not.
It is a quick walk from the parking lot to the main falls. But there are many routes around it to get a good hike in still.
Stunning and very accessible.
Emily F — Google review
Like Rainbow Falls a bit farther north, this is a stunning classic freefall that is extremely easy to access. Located just a few minutes outside of the town center of Whangarei, the 76-meter waterfall is simply breathtaking. A large parking area with toilets is provided , and a perfect view from the left side is only steps away. You can cross a footbridge just meters above the brink (be careful!), then a well-groomed foot path takes you to an upper side view and then more steeply down to a footbridge with a perfect frontal view. Paths continue along the river (quite muddy during our visit) as well as along the cliffs above. There is no entry fee.
This is a gorgeous place and there is no charge to see it. Highly recommended!

Beautiful walk. Dogs allowed on leash. Pick up it’s poop though !!
Probably tough for anyone that struggles walking too far. Total distance is maybe 1km but it’s a reasonably steep track down to the base of the falls and an back up the other side. If you have a strong person the parking lot side track down is possible in a wheelchair. It is gravel so probably a good slog to push the wheelchair back up if the passenger is “heavy” 😬
Very impressive waterfall though and in some awesome NZ bush 👍🏼❤️
Jimbo — Google review
Gorgeous waterfall just 100 feet from the car park. Several viewing stations. If you are able, walk across the bridge (that has no handrail) and walk down a path and several steps to the bottom of the falls. It’s not very far and the views are spectacular! You need non slip shoes. You can walk back up the stairs or go across the bridge at the bottom and take the path back.
This is one of the prettiest water falls I’ve seen so close to a town with little to no walking
Terri Griffin — Google review
A must stop in Whangarei! Carpark and public toilets, then checkout the waterfall from the viewing platform. Take a 5 minute stroll down to the bottom to get the full view of the waterfall. Plenty of picnic tables throughout to use. The walkway is mainly stairs, but it is an easy walk. Swimming is not recommended

Breathtaking, impressive falls. Bigger than I expected! Great parking and very well maintained walking tracks. Beautiful, rich rainforest. Easy 10min loop, good for kids, families etc. Longer half day walk option.
Toby Ricketts — Google review
Yes itbwas raining and wet but it eas still worth the walk down to the bottom of the falls and just seeing the awesome sight of the falls.
Certainly glad we made the decision to go there, the path down is easy to walk, a little wet but still an easy walk.
If you are ever in the area its definitely well worth stopping and having a look.

Our second journey to Whangarei Falls, distinct from our post-cyclone Gabriel visit, presented the falls in a gentler flow, yet still beautifully lively for the late summer season. Opting for a leisurely hour on the Sands Road Trail, we commenced at the Whangarei Falls loop in a clockwise direction, transitioning to the Sands Road Trail at a scenic water crossing at the falls' base. Despite the summer's scant rainfall, the falls didn't disappoint, maintaining a graceful cascade. The trail began with a gentle incline, moderating to a pleasant path that led us across a picturesque suspension bridge to the river's southern bank. The day blessed us with splendid weather, enhancing our walk alongside the river and over a cleverly designed fence-step system for easy passage. Midway, we looped back to the Falls trail, concluding our exploration at the now more accessible carpark near inviting picnic tables. This spot remains a favored destination for its breathtaking vistas and varied hiking experiences, promising more adventures on the Sands Road Trail in future visits.

A-MA-ZING! Easy walk to the fall, a few tables and space for a picnic, a path that transports you to a peaceful place enclosed by trees and butterflies. ⚠️ it is a swimmable place but be cautious and respect it’s magnitude. If you’re unsure, follow the locals - don’t adventure by yourself.

Beautiful falls. We did the Falls Loop Track and it was very nice. It is a easy walk and took about 30 minutos with a lot of stops for photos and to contemplate the nature. Defined recommended.

Lovely walk from the town Marina up to the falls!
Walking through pristine old and young Kauri forest. Falls can be observed from all sides as there is a little loop trail available. Parking on top of the falls recommended especially for older and handicapped people who need wheelchair access.

A very great spot for a family. It was my first time but I love how you wouldn't expect mother nature just not far from town.
One thing that you should know is that when it is high season. There are not many car parks around so you may park away and walk to the place.

Whangarei Falls is an absolutely breathtaking natural wonder! The serene beauty is truly mesmerizing, creating a perfect atmosphere for both relaxation and exploration. It’s undoubtedly a destination that everyone should experience! The cascading waters and lush surroundings offer a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Just a short walk from the parking area, towards the bush(not the beautiful cemented path on the left). There are some steps down, so it is not accessible by wheelchair. However, there is a view from the top of the falls for those who can't do the walk. And it's beautiful! It's worth the stop, and visit! Swimming isn't recommended here. However, we did see someone swimming there.

+ Beautiful, almost straight out of a fairly tale
- No swimming 🚫
• if you climb behind the waterfall, be careful it is VERY slippery ⚠️

This place was a beauty beyond. I loved the fact we were able to get close to the fall itself and took pictures. It wasn't a good day for me in general, I wasn't feeling well, and the trek down to the bottom of the falls and then back up was beyond exhausting for me. Especially coming back up, took thrice the time it took to get down. But that all went away when I looked back at the pics we took and the memories we made in that serene place 🙏
Vinah Mauigoa — Google review
The area above the falls is well looked after with lots of green space and new trees planted with picnic tables in the area. A good path down to the bottom of the falls and then up the other side. Well worth a visit and right by the parking area.

Beautiful morning walk to bring in the New Year! Whangarei has a lot of little gems you just have to look for them 😉 I took the quick route which would have been a 5-7 minute walk to get to the falls, given that you’re not stopping and looking at the falls from all angles/lookouts. It looks well taken care of. There are toilet facilities and places to sit and eat. Quite nice 😊 I think I don’t remember if you can eat right next to the waterfalls. Pls be a good visitor and take your rubbish with you ☺️

We had an amazing day. The staff were fantastic, they really looked after everyone. The snorkeling was outstanding, like swimming in an aquarium. All the equipment was top notch, and the catering was 10 out of 10. Thanks to the crew of Diversity for making it happen!

What a day! We did the 2 dive trip to Poor Knights, which is called one of the top 10 dice sites in the world and we're not disappointed! Bit of an overcast day, but it cleared up as we cruised ~50 minutes to the island. Two amazing dives with friendly crew. We did the refresher course, because it had been 3 years since our last dive and were grateful for a first dive to boost confidence... But it also meant we basically had a private tour :) so a win for two reasons, and the second dive we just got to enjoy ourselves. Felt safe, good gear, beautiful sites, and a great memory!

Great staff! We had a party if 4, two divers and 2 snorkelers. Poor Knights is an amazing place and our skipper knew so much about the history of the island. Definitely recommend

AMAZING. The ride over to Poor Knights was a bit rough but so fun, and the captain was great! Staff on board so helpful and kind. We did some snorkelling and saw plenty of fish and even a sea turtle! Went inside a giant sea cave, saw the beautiful surrounding landscape … would highly recommend this trip!

Did my PADI Open water course here with Dan and it was excellent. Dan is an amazing instructor with experience. Went out on 4 open water dives as a part of the training at Poor Knights Islands which were blissful. The crew was friendly and helpful. Did stay at the Lodge 9 dive resort which added to the experience. Beautiful stay with loads of amenities. They have amazing package deals with the stay and dive. All in all amazing experience with Dive Tutukaka, You’re doing an amazing job guys, Keep it up.

Took the "Perfect Day" experience out to the Poor Knights islands for a day's snorkeling, kayaking and paddle boarding.
This was a great experience, once we arrived we had 2 hours of activities before traveling back.
We didn't have the best of weather on the day we went so the trip out to the islands was very rough and a few people were sick. Definitely try and pick the best weather when you go.
Once we got to the shelter of the islands the water was calm and quite warm and it was sunny 😁.
The fish were amazing and could be seen under the boat when snorkeling, I got some amazing photos with my phone which survived being in the water.
The crew were great and very helpful and knowledgeable.

Hands down the best dive company in NZ! I've done 4 trips with them now and they have the best crew and the the most amazing wildlife. They are also super flexible with their PADI courses and the weather to give everyone the best experience. I've been lucky enough to experience sharks, whales, dolphins, playful seals, turtles, moray eels, heaps of nudi's and much more. I will definitely be back

A Magical Snorkeling Experience
I recently had the pleasure of snorkeling off Poor Nights Island with Dive! Tutakaka and EMR. It was an experience of a lifetime.
I saw an amazing variety of fish which made the snorkeling experience truly magical. The clear, calm waters are inviting and provide excellent visibility, enhancing the overall experience.
This is not just a visit, it's a journey into a mesmerizing underwater world. A fantastic destination for snorkeling enthusiasts or anyone seeking an unforgettable marine adventure. I look forward to my next visit and would highly recommend this experience to others.
Remember to respect the regulations and enjoy the natural beauty while also respecting and protecting the wildlife . The preservation of this magnificent location is up to us, the visitors.

I had a fantastic diving experience with Dive! Tutukaka. The staff was wonderful, providing thorough guidance throughout the process. Their shared insights about the Poor Knights island and marine life in the area which added to the dive. The dive site had an abundance of fish and sea life to explore. I highly recommend diving or snorkelling if you’re in Tutukaka!

Great day out with really good staff. My partner can get seasick and they provided her with the glasses and a bag. she reckoned the glasses helped and thankfully didn't need the bag. Everything felt very safe and the skipper was very knowledgeable. Of course, the fish life was great and the views and the Pohutukawa trees looked amazing. The vegetarian sandwiches were also better than expected

A group of us have been learning to dive with Dive! Tutukaka and we have been having the best time ever! We have found the dive school to be very organized and proffesional as well as friendly and helpful. A special note is that our dive instructor (Charlie Harris) was absolutely amazing! He had such great patience with our group, taught us so well and made us feel really safe when we went for our first big ocean dive. I would highly recommend him and this dive centre if you want a great experience and to feel in safe hands! The dive site out at Poor Knights Island is also really amazing and Charlie made sure to point out the most amazing creatures while we dived! A highly recommended experience! 👌

We had a blast exploring the Poor Knights Islands with Dive! Tutukaka. From getting our dive gear sorted to discussing the dive spots, the crew was super pro and filled us in on loads about the area and marine life. Their facility is very clean and organised – honestly the best we've seen anywhere – making getting ready for the dives a breeze. Our dive guides, Kelly and Thomas, were ace at spotting tiny critters like nudibranchs and even 'lady-birds' for me to snap some cool macro photos, as well as telling us all about the marine life after the dives. Along with the dives, our captain took us on a spin around the islands and into the world's biggest sea cave. We also spotted dolphins and even caught sight of a sunfish waving its fin out of the water.
For anyone who likes scuba diving, Poor Knights Islands is a must-do and I totally recommend Dive! Tutukaka.

The crew were so accomodating. We were the couple who decided to bring a 4 week old baby on board LOL. From the booking (they were very informative about bringing our little one and which boat would be best) to on board, they were so kind about everything! The two women who helped us with the snorkelling gear were lovely and the woman with the brown curly hair explained the health and safety briefing to us so we didn’t have to take our infant upstairs. I feel you don’t often see people who appear to genuinely enjoy their jobs and it was honestly such a relief. 10/10 would go again.

I had an absolutely incredible experience with Dive! Tutukaka, and I can't say enough good things about their staff. Arlo, Kelly, Indie, and the Skipper are the heart and soul of this operation. Their warmth, care, and genuine kindness made my trip unforgettable. From start to finish, their hospitality was out of this world. If you're looking for an extraordinary diving/snorkelling adventure with amazing humans, Dive! Tutukaka is the place to be! Indie was so lovely to look after me after being sea-sick! 🥺
Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a nature space operated by volunteers, located on the site of an old quarry. The gardens feature subtropical flora and fauna, with a man-made lake and several walking paths that weave through the area. Visitors can explore parts of the old quarry integrated into the planting while enjoying delicious refreshments at the onsite café. Entry requires a small fee of a gold coin, making it an ideal stop for those passing through with little time to spare.
This place is "heaven"! Gorgeous gardens all year round with a lake, shady spots, gorgeous sculptures, beautiful flowers and plants, and a wonderful cafe opened from Wednesdays through Sunday. It is the complete package! This place is not to be missed! The gardens have been a community project created and maintained by volunteers for over 30 years! Sinply delightful for all ages!

Quarry gardens? Really? That's what I thought as well. But, wow, what a stunning experience this was! From artistic sculptures to indigenous plants and trees and exotic beauties, its all here. And best of all, you can do the whole garden in under a hour with easy walkways and clearly identified paths. The Echo tunnels were a nice surprise too! We did not get to see a real Kiwi (aww!) but maybe next time. Lovely cafe on site and pay for entrance by means of gold coin admission. Or just be a jerk and don't donate...

Gorgeous gardens that just opened back up about a month ago as it recovered from the cyclone. There is a pretty but small waterfall at the lake area. It’s an easy walk to the lake area.any of the higher paths are still not open but it is still worth a visit. They have a lovely cafe, nice toilets, and a wonderful staff. The gardens are mostly run by volunteers and they do a great job. As others have said, there is no entrance fee but they ask for and deserve donations if you go into the gardens.
There is parking at the top by the entrance but it fills up quickly as this is also the parking for the cafe which seats quite a few. There are other nice paved parking areas lower down the hill.

Embarrassing to admit but I lived in Whangarei for the first 21 years of my life and never went here. Finally popped in and was suitably impressed. An old quarry had been turned into a an amazing area to walk and explore. Huge Fig trees like I've never seen before, a man made lake, walks and paths all over, and parts of the old quarry are integrated in the planting. There is a lovely cafe onsite too. Take a hat and walking shoes and lose yourself for a while!

Very nice little paradise. Unfortunately the garden was hit by two landslides due to the cyclone recently and some parts were not accessible. But it was a great experience anyways and it’s lovely to see how nicely everything is arranged and taken care of

This was a lovely day out with family, and I’d really strongly recommend it to anyone with the time.
Started the morning off at the Quail cafe, enjoying stunning coffee, and a range of food options including great Vegan options.
From there, we meandered through to begin a pre-booked Golf Cart tour with Nancy, who was a wonderfully friendly and hospitable tour guide. The cart is a great idea, and enables those with limited mobility to get up and enjoy the entirety of the gardens.

Beautifully landscaped. Too bad there was closure due to the weather to perhaps the best part of the quarry. But hey can't complain if it's by donation. :) be generous, it's a beautiful place for a picnic and a stop over to stretch your legs. Don't forget rain or shine they have umbrellas you could use. Unfortunately, I only saw it on our way back, but it would've been nice to have it offered :) as I was sunburnt 😆 And they sell plants too, so go prepared.

We visited before the storm damage and was upset with the prospect it would be too bad to restore but we are glad to hear that this wonderful garden is still open. It is unique in NZ with such a variety of exotic plants that are well named. Lots of great landscaping design is incorporated into making this a fabulous visit.

We are traveling around the world in our sailboat. This marina is one of our favorites! The staff is very friendly, the cruiser's lounge is nice, the showers are very clean and only $1 NZD forn6 minutes. Laundry facilities are nice as well. The location could not be better. Just about anything you could want or need for your boat/home is within walking distance. Couldn't ask for more ♥️

We spend 4-5 months at Town Basin Marina each year. We have done this for the past 6 years now, and it feels like home. You couldn't ask for a nicer place to have your boat. We can walk to groceries, boat shops, yoga and plates classes, restaurants, and a nearby pottery studio! The scenery is beautiful. Whangārei Marina also known as the town basin is such a lively place. It has many cute shops and bubbly people. I especially like the waterfront where there are usually markets held there.
Went here after I did the Te Whara track and it was just stunning. Beautiful weather and the beach is approachable and accessible. Many different areas to climb and access. There's a part where you can climb over the rocks that you should wear shoes for that because I did not and it hurt my feet! But you overlook the vast blue ocean and can see parts of the Te Whara track as well as the many islands that surround this beach. Absolutely amazing experience and would list as a must-do if you're ever in the area.

The long drive to Ocean Beach is worth it. The car parking area provides good parking, info board, and toilets. After a short, level walk through the dunes you reach the beach, which is great.
Make sure you climb to the top of the headland (to the right as you look out to sea) for great views.
Definitely worth a visit. 😁

Very nice beach, even got a sand hill on the left side and you can try to get over it and get to another beach next to it. There is one time that a lifeguard came down from the watch house when he saw me I went deep into the sea, I met him when I swam back and that's when I know he came down because he thought I would got drowned, and just one or two weeks before that a teenage boy drowned there. Other than this story this beach is great, as long as you don't go swim deep at night there is a good possibility people can see you if you are in real danger. The sands are white and fine. 5/5 would recommend

I'll never travel to Auckland without this trip planner again
Waipu Caves is a popular tourist attraction located in Northland, New Zealand. The caves feature stunning rock formations made of karst limestone, including stalactites and stalagmites. Visitors can also observe shimmering glow worms that light up the dark cave environment. To reach the main attraction, visitors must navigate a walking track through shallow water that requires some bending and knee-deep wading. It's recommended to bring sturdy shoes that can handle getting wet and a good torch for visibility.
Well worth a visit. Bring a change of clothes and be prepared to get your feet wet. There is a lot to explore with a number of looping back tunnels to check out if you are feeling adventurous. Suitable for families. The caves can be slippery so caution for those who are unsteady on their feet.
Michael Sanders — Google review
A non commercialized cave where it's free to explore. Love the raw, rugged terrains inside. You'll need a good torch/headlamp and expect to walk through water. About 50m in, look up, off your torch and you'll see glow worms lighting up inside looking like stars. It's absolutely stunning.
Vanessa Fork — Google review
To see the Glow worms you will need get your legs wet walking up the creek in the cave. And a light. You can go into the cave about 20 metres so is still pretty good.
The walking track into the bush (not the cave) is largely unformed and very slippery if damp or wet. If you're prepared for that sought of walking it would be a good walk, if just sand shoes and jeans, forget it
Peter Buggy — Google review
We loved these caves, easy walks around, you will need a torch and you going to get wet, only to shin. Can be slippery. But awesome for night exploring and glow worms are stunning. Both day and night. We camped outside in our caravan. Will recommend that self contained vehicles only, local district does come and inspect.

Great adventure, took the kids (3,6 and 11) and my self with a metal plate in foot up until you have to go knee deep in water and bend alot of the way, 3 yr old wasn't too keen to go further.
Beautiful glow worms, rock formations and secrets I'll leave for you to see for yourself.
Take a good torch, shoes you don't mind getting wet and spare pants as some places are slippery!

Read the signs and don't take the walk trail expecting to see caves like we did 😂 There are no caves on that trail! Follow the "Cave Entrance" sign instead!
The walk trail is indeed gorgeous however, and absolutely worth it if you love being in the forest and enjoying it's diversity.
Bronwyn Bear — Google review
The cave entrance is 50m from the parking lot. Easy descent into the cave with running water inside. We went to the left tunnel and saw glow worms that lid up like stars. Water level was lower than our knees making easy wading. It was a wonderful experience and the visit was free. We ran into less than 10 people.
Von Nguyen — Google review
Excellent Adventure. Caves are a 1 minute walk from car park. You can journey around 100 metres or more into this cave and there are a few branches to explore. 10 story high caverns, small waterfalls, impressive displays of glow worms, and limestone features all make this quite an adventure. It's possible (but unlikely) to get lost so stay aware of entry points. You'll also get somewhat muddy and wet feet, but well worth it. Take a bright torch, but don't disturb other explorers or the glow worms with it! Note that the walking track is a bit of a let down. It traverses through some interesting limestone terrain early on, but then gets steep and opens out to an un-dramatic lookout over farmland to the coast. Not worth the effort IMHO. The caves are the main attraction. Yes the caves are child friendly but they would need to be closely supervised.
Royce Pedersen — Google review
Beautiful cave just 20 minutes off the State high way 1. So much fun exploring the caves. It's very dark so will need a torch. Better to bring some water to clean yourself as the water is not very clean. Saw eels and also a dead bird body in the cave😂

Amazing FREE, easy access glowworms cave. You still need to be in relatively good shape and prepared since it is a cave and it is slippery, but one can go to the left to the first chamber and see tons of glowworms! I wish I had the equipment to explore further, but I do not regret my stop there!

A really cool cave system that is surprising free to enter. The cave does produce a hydrogen sulfide smell but it’s not an issue. Bring a torch or phone for the deeper part of the cave since there is plenty of luminous glow worms in sight.

I recommend wearing water sneakers or sandals as it’s safer/easier to walk through the ankle deep water than the rock (slippery).
Best cave is to the LEFT, past the tree root and down the little water way!

To fully explore the cave be sure to bring your rain shoes and tuck your pants in. Because once getting the yellow soil on,it can't be cleaned, scrapped me a whole costume. It was such a pleasure to explore the four rooms and see the beautiful and incomparable fireflies ,just like the stars in the sky, only at the entrance.
The Kauri Museum in Matakohe is a fascinating attraction that showcases the history of pioneers and their use of the kauri tree and its gum for various purposes like furniture and lighting. The museum also features a 19th-century church and schoolhouse with kauri frames, as well as beautiful heritage roses that attract visitors in spring.
Simply a MUST SEE museum. I always take my overseas visitors there and they are in awe just like I was. Amazing Kauri Gum displays and life-size saw machines and rooms give an impressive realistic view on what it was in days gone by.

The art shop was awesome, spent far too much money in there haha. The grounds of the entire place are lovely. We didn't go into the actual kauri museum as we were short on time and at $25 entry fee we would want to spend a decent amount of time looking around. Discount for NZ residents or locals might be considered?
There is also a cafe which would be a nice place to visit next time when we have more time.

Also a deep sadness to se how human greed has treated those magnificent forests. The day before we wisited the Kauri forest. Tears ran down my cheeks seing the “lumber plant”. A visit worth!! But with a bittersweet taste to it.

Amazing Museum ! You could spend hours here and still it wont be enough . Mannequins there takes you to a tour of olden days , some mannequins just give you a feeling of real people standing next to you . Must visit if you're travelling Northland .

Saw the sign while travelling, and made a detour. Well worth it, but needed more time!
A lot bigger and more detailed than I expected. A fantastic piece of local history, far more than just Kauri related.

I actually done some work in the place and it was a very humbling experience.the staff there were great.friendly, with positive vibes and a knowledge and passion for what they were presenting to all who visit.did not take the full tour but what I did see is enough for me to take my family back to experience it together

This was a hidden gem. Very detailed account with lots to read & lots on display. Done very well. Family friendly although probably 7 & up more ideal to be able to do the reading side of things. It also appealed to our teen so a bonus. Top tip is that your pass is for 2 days. Biggest collection of Kauri gum I have seen in my life.

Allow more than 1 hour! We had a limited amount of time when we visited and definitely did not see everything the museum had to offer! Very reasonable entry fee for what the museum contains and the number of artifacts and numerous photos it had to offer. A very detailed history of Kauri and NZ industry.
Best surf lesson we have ever had! We booked a private lesson for the two of us and our instructor Tony was very professional and thoroughly explained us everything about the board, the waves, the current and the four possible dangers when surfing and how exactly to avoid them. We felt very safe with his instructions and had tons of fun catching waves. We were also able to hire the boards and wetsuits for two more hours after the lesson and were glad we did so, that way we could practice even more. 🌊
Oh and here is a recommendation for fellow backpackers exploring NZ in a van: Aotearoa Surf School has really great rates for renting boards and wetsuits long-term. So make sure to have some extra space on your roof or the back when choosing a van, it really pays off. 🏄♂️

Absolutely amazing ultimate surf camp! Kids were for the first time (10 & 8 yr old) and enjoyed every minute of this adventure. We were very well informed daily and knew kids are safe and well taken care off. Fresh food, fun games, surf school, water slide...Boys want to go again, which is the best feedback, we are happy;)

Absolutely loved everything about this surf school. My daughter who is 9 enrolled in the school holiday surfing and then did the after school surf program for a term. She learnt so much from the incredible coaches! Although we lived down in Howick I was ready to make the drive every week up to Orewa so she could learn how to surf, and I am not disappointed! She seems confident and enjoyed the whole learning process! If you are looking for a good surf school for your kids, I would choose Aotearoa Surf school!

Just had such an awesome women’s surf and yoga retreat weekend. One of the best weekends I’ve ever had! Fun, beautiful accommodation glamping in a tipi, thoughtful food, amazing yoga space, and I learnt so much in the two surf lessons we had. Beth, the instructor, was sensational all weekend - such a lovely soul and she went above and beyond to make our weekend super special. Highly recommend and great value for money. Thanks heaps guys!

This was the best experience I’ve ever had, instructors are definitely more professional and passionate in transferring the techniques and skills to us compared to my first experience with another surfing school. Facility wise, it is not as convenient and complete, would recommend to bring extra bottles of water to do your cleaning job.

Te Hawere-a-Maki or Goat Island Marine Reserve is a 547-hectare nature preserve located just 3km from Leigh. It was established as New Zealand's first marine reserve in 1975 and has since become a popular destination for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking along the beach trails. The aquatic area boasts an impressive variety of marine life such as snapper, blue maomao, and parore that can be seen even knee-deep in the water.
Beautiful, majestic, amazing 🤩
Such beautiful views, water was beautiful and calm, although a bit dirty near the rocks and in the shallow area it is pretty clear to see the fishes, lots of snappers further in. Snorkel hire was available nearby, bathroom was nice and clean and rubbish bin was so large could fit in a lot. Went on New Year’s Day so was very busy with car parks but there lots of room on the side of the road. Not much shade so will need some shelter.

Amazing place is definitely worth going back there. If you love snorkeling, then this is the place for you. You can go out in a group with instructors who know exactly what they are doing. A guided trip in our beautiful ocean. Kids or adults can go. Even the toilet block is painted, and it looks amazing. the bookings are done away from here all online. So book in advance.
Would have been 5 stars, but the signs of information need to be redone.

Was windy when we were there. The walk to the lookout seemed a lot longer than 600m (& we love to walk). My suggestion is walk up towards the look out yet stop at the commemorative bench seat as the views are good from there. 4 stars as both sets of public toilets were closed 😭

Great place to go for a snorkel, but would get there early as it gets busy quickly. Changing rooms and toilets are both available in the free car park area before you head down to the beach.
Plenty of friendly fish in the sea near the beach without needing to swim far, but be cautious of the tide which can be noticeable between the island and mainland. Would recommend bringing water shoes to walk over the rocks.

The Sculptureum is a modern and diverse facility featuring various art galleries, sculpture gardens, and a vineyard. Visitors can enjoy an elegant restaurant as well as view a wide range of artwork from all over the world, including the popular polar bear sculpture. While it may be crowded during public holidays, it is still worth visiting for its outstanding collections. The museum is wheelchair accessible with ample parking spaces available. Senior citizens can also get discounted rates at $20 per person.
Two beautiful gardens and an amazing gallery, lots to see and plenty of awesome photo spots! We came on a lovely sunny autumn's day and easily spent more than a couple of hours here, would have stayed longer as the art gallery was surprisingly good and we loved everything on display there. Really enjoyed watching the colourful birds, rabbits and turtles too 😊

Visited on a public holiday. There was a long wait to enter. The garden is very ordinary. Not many exciting sculptures. Some items in the gallery was good. There was an offer for the tickets and we went for half price. Otherwise they usually charge 45$ per person which i feel a bit too much for this place. Kids will have a good time.

Sculptures were interesting and the place was really well kept! The recommended time on their website was very accurate if you were going to take your time and read the descriptions on the artworks. It was a bit hot when we got there so it was really nice that there were umbrellas available for guests to take by the entrance. Really good experience

This place is worth going, and I would like to visit again in the future:) It is saperated into three gardens and six galleries where there are more than 800 works displaying. I love the Palm garden the most, and the Pink Snail Garden is fun too! Other than sculptures, there are also some real animals, including bunny, turtles, parrots and so on. One of the parrots can say 'Hello' again and again, which made us lingering for a long time😆 Free carpark outside, and the ticket is 49.50 pp (it's 38 pp if you're a resident). Staff is nice and welcoming.

What a great spot to explore! Would be great for families. Excellent customer service, very friendly and welcoming. We were traveling in a campervan and were relieved to find parking was a breeze.
We visited in peak season (early new year), so arrived early to avoid crowds, and glad we did as when we left, the car park was very full! Arriving early allows plenty of time to stroll leisurely through beautifully shaded pathways, discovering quaint quirky signage and clever displays along the way.
The art gallery was impressive, unexpected, and somewhat mesmerizing, with a great dose of colour and quirk! Loved it.
The one-way automated doors were great, but were a touch confusing initially. Perhaps some glow in the dark signage or LED lights could be a fun addition here? (Although it is barely a second in between doors closing and opening).
Smart supply of loan umbrellas available at the entrance to the final garden were a nice touch. Wish we'd lingered a touch longer here, but needed to get away and was incredibly hot day, so we kind of raced through (not before snapping the famous snails though!)
The restaurant appeared incredibly popular (definitely book ahead!). We were pleased to find the food caravans but wish there could have been a smoothie or milkshake as an option.
Sam Roff — Google review
The website describes it as 6 art galleries, so I was disappointed to see it was actually just 6 different small rooms. Despite that, there were lots of brilliant pieces on display, from all around the world. The polar bear was my favourite! Highly recommend you avoid a public holiday weekend, we went over Easter weekend and it was uncomfortably packed. Would say it's worth a visit.

Just been to the Sculptureum and it's pretty impressive. There's heaps of cool sculptures and artworks, indoors and out. Loved wandering through the gardens – every nook has something interesting.
Just a heads-up, it can get a bit packed and some outdoor paths are quite snug. Not a huge issue, but something to bear in mind if you're not keen on crowded spaces.
The staff are friendly and there's a nice café for a cuppa and a bite. Definitely worth a look if you're into art, but maybe avoid the busy times if you like more space.

The entrance and parking are easy to find from the main road. The first garden (across the little bridge) is okay, but would not be the main attraction (some strange sections....some "shrine-like"). The posters have a sort of "young" language (basic, not hip).
The internal art gallery is mesmerising. I could have spent much longer in there but found the one way system sometimes shunted you done the line a bit quick. The other garden (with the famous pink snail) was very entertaining for my 4 year old. It has cute and cartoony sculptures at the beginning. The outside gardens are covered with well-established trees and are cool with gentle breezes. There are some truly serene spots to find a bench to sit and contemplate.
The food truck area was nice enough (shaded tables and beanbags and some outdoor table games). However the hot food took about 30 minutes to cook. We only ordered hot chips but they were cooked in 5 separate batches.... Also the 15% surcharge on $7 portions of chips was quite steep. Probably wouldn't have food there next time, but also didn't get the sense it was welcoming to picnics.
Took a pram the whole way with no issues. Was offers a quiet corner to breastfeed my baby which was lovely and private.

Just a short drive from Auckland, this picturesque destination is renowned for its excellent wineries and unique food stores. The vibrant Saturday farmers' market offers an array of locally-sourced produce and gourmet treats. Additionally, visitors can explore numerous cellar doors and dining options in the area. A very beautiful and picturesque place it is a hidden gem on the edge of Auckland, the trails are secluded and quiet but high quality and a rare place in New Zealand to find a reserve with exotic forests managed as well as indigenous. Great example of sustainable use of land!
And there are in it
Beautiful landscapes, easy to walk through fields and forests. A little hard walking. Very few visitors, so you'll be fully booked to enjoy it. Be sure to visit the water tank.
And here it is
Great campsite with plenty of space, bike trails suitable for both family and kids. I wish there was water access but a short drive to Port Albert for wharf fishing would be a great option.

Wonderful! Sculptures and vistas. Tickets are made available only at certain times of the year through charities - announced on eventfinda and suchlike. They sell in a flash at a cost of anything from $85 to $100 from what I've seen.

An absolutely stunning landscape with incredible sculptures from artists around the world enhanced by the presence of exotic animals. Incredible vistas and easy to walk paths with few visitors to interfere with your experience. This is a must see attraction when visiting New Zealand. Tickets must be purchased in advance and pay attention to when the park is open to visitors as this is a privately-owned expanse, and only open during certain times of the year. Visit as many sculptures as you can in the time allowed. Don't waste time picnicking or doing anything else. Don't forget to visit the giraffes and zebras!

Wow, you just have to go. Such a variety of incredibly impressive pieces in a wonderful setting.

You have to book months in advance. Tickets are donated to charities who then sell them for $100+ per ticket, they always sell out quickly especially on weekends. There are very limited tickets available during the year as it is not open to the public otherwise, it’s not worth getting the free tickets, I tried for months with no success as I think they are just donated to charities.
On a sunny day like we had it is an amazing experience. Gorgeous large scale sculptures and cute animals. Amazing date with my husband.
We had booked once when it rained heavily and decided not to go. I don’t think it would be worthwhile in rainy weather so we were glad we booked again and the weather was sunny that second time.

This great attraction should not be missed. You will have lovely inspiring time during this visit of one of the best outdoor sculpture parks in the world. A couple of tips. 1. Do not waste you time for a picnic during open hours as it's only open for a half of day. Eat after you explored as many sculptures as possible. It's almost impossible to see them all in a limited time in enjoyable pace. 2. Try to participate in the talks about different sculptures. It gives you much more understanding if significants of this place. Enjoy!

I’m not a fan of swimming at this beach (Stanmore Bay and Arkles Bay are much nicer) but I absolutely love early morning walks here.
It’s almost 6km end to end return from the bridge to the Scout Hall return, or take a small detour to pick up a coffee on the main street).
Check the tides before you go as at high tide some parts are cut off. (If you get there and it’s high tide just nip across the road to the estuary walk).

Visitors can access the island via ferry from downtown Auckland and enjoy a guided walk with local volunteers to witness endangered native birds up close. The island serves as a wildlife sanctuary, providing untouched beaches and forests for visitors to explore. Tiritiri Matangi Island is highly recommended for those who seek an experience with rare bird species amidst blooming flowers and singing melodies in the air.
An island rich in wildlife, Tiritiri Matangi is one of New Zealand’s oldest sanctuaries and a treasure trove for students and researchers alike. Here, they will learn first-hand about our threatened species and the country’s conservation effort throughout its history.
Located just an hour from Aotearoa's largest city, this island sanctuary is home to an unrivalled variety of wildlife living their best lives. Take a guided walk to learn about the island's wildlife and original spade brigade, or explore it at your own pace. Support our conservation and education programmes, or get involved as a volunteer.
Enjoyed the day out with the family, the weather was perfect. If you are going on a hot day take your swimming gear for a dip after a long walk. Also take lunch as well. Great day out, the guided walk is a bonus which we didn't book but decided on the day it was a good idea and glad we did it. Our guide was very knowledgable about the trees and birds too

If visiting Auckland or even if you live in Auckland ,Tiritiri Matangi Island is a must go to. Considering what it was 50 odd years, practically treeless. 20,000 planted trees later and plenty of bird life. What a transformation.

A fantastic day trip to a beautiful island to see the native bird life. We took the ferry over and booked a guided walk, which really helped to learn and locate all the birds and trees. They have really created a nice experience and it was well worth it.

You can feel the spring in the air. With the flowers blooming, there are more nectar for birds. They are singing loudly and putting on a show.

A Great Peaceful place to visit.
Since it's a reserve and conserved land to it's original form, it is highly organized to keep as natural as possible it is.
Need to bring your own drinks and food when you are going there.. for public only one ferry from Auckland Harbour which is operated by explorer ferry.
There are some real rare birds in here.. I have taken some pictures of these rare birds and some of the pics you can find in my Instagram account fahaz_kurukkan
Advise to take a map or note the map in advance and plan to walk on the train as much as possible with a plan to reach back to ferry terminal before it leaves.

So much hard work has gone into making this island sanctuary a place where our native birds can flourish again. It is an amazing place and well worth the journey. I can recommend the guided walk if you are curious. There are toilets and a gift shop on the island. Proceeds help to continue pest eradication efforts.

Loved it! Beautiful Island. On the way to the island I saw penguins swimming in the ocean. The island itself is beautiful. Its not crowded at all. I saw them all: Takahes, Kokakos, sattlebacks, Hihis, Bellbirds, NZ pigeons, Tuis, Kakarikis, Whiteheads, Robins. Couldn't be happier. Great Day Trip. Could have spend even more time there :)

A great day out from Auckland! We had a guided tour with Enid (one of the volunteer tour guides) and she was so knowledgable about the wildlife and plants on the island, and the history of creating the sanctuary. We saw so many native birds, including the Kōkako. There was also a lovely shop in the visior centre, and the Explore boat to/from the island was great.

Great facilities and overnight stay if you book well ahead. Exercise and fresh air. Great people working there. Close to nature and the best morning chorus from the birds. Fantastic Sunrise!

A most rewarding experience for those wanting to encounter our rare wildlife without to much effort. Firstly a pleasant ocean voyage, and then an abundance of birdlife and other critter to find on the many easy tracks. Good swimming beaches too.

I really like this island, it‘s so beautiful! You can have lunch at the Lighthouse (has toilets, a shop for souvenirs and free tea). And at the end you can swim at the beach near the ferry, that‘s a great ending for your trip.
They will control your food which you bring (you can only buy chocolate in the shop, so I would bring my own lunch), you have to fill it in plastic bags (or in containers) so no seeds can come on the island and maybe damage the nature.
Your shoes have to be cleaned.
There are some guides who show you around and tell you everything about the birds. You can just point on one you see and they will give you much information about it.
The trip is definitely worth it & i can only recommend it. But if you want to enjoy it, take your time and do a day trip to the Island!!

Amazing day tour with lots of birds to see, but also excellent information provided by volunteers! And wonderful landscapes, too. Next time I will definitely stay longer.

A must for any nature lovers. You can either pre-book online or hope for the best and get tickets on the day. Pick up options for the ferry are either Auckland Ferry Terminal or Gulf Harbour Ferry terminal. I went with the latter since the tickets were cheaper and there was free parking in proximity to the terminal.
The ferry ride was quite nice and once we arrived on the island there was a 10 minute welcome before being split into groups if you had a guided tour. There are two options for the tour, straight to the lighthouse (Wattle Track) or circling around the island before heading to the lighthouse (Kawerau Track).
It was enjoyable to leisurely walk down the track and stop off at certain places to look at the birds in the area. The guides were quite knowledgeable about the birds on the island as well as the history. They also knew where certain birds are located like when I went they knew that there was a family of Takahe near the light house. Both walks stop at the lighthouse which is near the visitor center.
The Kawerau track (longer of the two) took most of the day so there wasn't much time to explore more of the island but it was informative since it was my first time there. I walked down the Wattle track back to the ferry terminal. Just remember to get to the terminal before the ferry leaves otherwise it is an expensive ride back.
This secluded bird watching spot features black sand beaches and nesting cliffs for gannets. There are also stunning views of the ocean, making it a perfect spot to capture some amazing photos and memories.
Love our Auckland's west coach beaches. Muriwai beach is a great spot for taking photos. Not many gannets left at the moment (May). Most of the gannets took off to Australia, but will be back. It's also great to watch the surf and surfers. I'll be back ❤

Very beautiful area, there are many locations/viewing platforms to explore and view from. The whole area is designed very well as these colonies are located right next to the carpark.
Make sure you go during mating seasons to have the best experience.

A great experience to visit gannets nesting and raising their young.
At the same time you will have to endure the smell but definitely worth it.
Not to be outdone the landscape is also outstanding.
Prior to your visit it is worthwhile establishing whether the birds are there as they tend to only be present in the summer breeding months.

One of my favourite places to go in Auckland. Great drive out there and magnificent views and such a cool place to spend time watching the gannets. Plenty of parking and the tracks are in great condition.
I also love watching the sun set and enjoying a picnic dinner whilst there.

This place is a picturesque beach located within a short distance from Auckland City. I love its close proximity, making it easily accessible. It boasts ample parking spaces and offers breathtaking scenery. It's an ideal spot for both fishing and surfing, which I thoroughly enjoy. The presence of a nearby cafe adds to its charm and convenience.

We came in May 2024 and the way to the colony is temporarily closed. Nevertheless, the view from uphill of the Muriwai beach is still amazing. Very calming to hear the big waves splashing. Lots of surfers come to the area to take advantage of the strong current. You can come here any time to relax and meditate or even to just hangout with friends and family.

A chance to get up close and personal with Gannets at Muriwai. Great location, beach, tracks and views. The Gannets had chicks in various stages from fledgling to ready to fly.

The Muriwai Gannet Colony in New Zealand is a truly mesmerizing natural attraction. With its stunning coastal location on the North Island, it offers a unique opportunity to witness thousands of gannets in their natural habitat.
The colony's accessibility is a major plus; you can easily reach the viewing platforms, which provide excellent vantage points to observe these magnificent seabirds. Watching the gannets soar through the air and interact with each other is a memorable experience.
The rugged coastal scenery surrounding the colony adds to its appeal, making it a great spot for photography and nature enthusiasts. It's also worth noting that the views of the Tasman Sea are breathtaking.
However, to make the most of your visit, it's advisable to go during the breeding season (typically from August to March), when the gannets are most active and you can witness their courtship rituals and chicks. It's essential to respect the conservation efforts in place and stay on designated paths to protect the birds and their nesting areas.
Overall, the Muriwai Gannet Colony is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in wildlife and natural beauty, offering a captivating experience that's both educational and visually stunning.

Nice windy time. The Gannett colony lookout might be closed but the Kuku(green-lipped mussels) pond made up for lovely beach stroll. I'm just not sure if it's safe to eat these mussels (AKL sinkhole-sewage leak still not fixed<) Beautiful rock formations in cove too.

You must visit this place at least once in your lifetime. It's gorgeous on a clear day but equally stunning when it's grey and moody. It's an easy walk up to the colony from the carpark end, no need for trekking boots. I visited at the end of Jan and again today (1 week later). In a week a lot of gannets have left but still plenty raising chicks. Ideal time to visit would be in the month of January. I've attached pictures taken on a clear day and grey day taken a week a part.

Been in different zoo in every country I visited but this zoo is one of best.. It’s a Beautiful Zoo, Management spend a lot of effort in making this zoo as one of the best zoo soon. There’s an on going expansion for the animals to have the best atmosphere as possible.. The zoo is really huge and has lots of space where you can do picnic with family. It was pretty cloudy today but the zoo was fantastic. A few rain showers came thru and there were lots of nice places to shelter. Saw all the animals (even the kiwis!) except the otters which hid. The cafes were nicely located around but we brought our own food as too expensive for the family otherwise. Got a good entertainment club discount for entry too.

Awesome place. The animals seems very happy and well maintained. Also, the staff members are kind and always around if you need something. Of course, the weekends are crowded and it makes some animals get shy. I strongly recommend get a subscription if you are Auckland resident. Students, seniors, and kids have discount on the day pass. Library card works as a proof of residence.

The animals are kept beautifully, there is a real sense of their natural habitat and there are plenty to keep you interested for a couple of hours or so.
I found it difficult to find my way around and I'm normally pretty good at map reading. I kept ending up in the same place over and over.
There looked to be plenty of parking on site, but you will have to pay. I arrived by public transport from city centre 11T or 11W which drops you couple of hundred meters away. Overall a good day.

Love this Zoo. We got there Early so we got a good Park. Bookings are essential at the moment. Food was OK though they did seem a little stressed as there was a large amount of people. All up the Animals seem happy and healthy and you are more likely to see them out and about if you go early.

Really enjoyed our visit. Was super busy (school holidays) but still got to see most of the animals. Zoo workers were friendly, a good amount of toilets and places to stop and sit. Plenty of play areas for kids and lots of space for them to roam around. We stopped at the lookout cafe which was lovely, friendly staff too. Signs were clear so we could find our way around quite easily. Maps however were all in Maori, no English so found that a bit hard, had to rely on the images, not sure if that was only temporary because we went during Matariki though.
Was sad to not see the elephants but also glad to hear they've moved somewhere more suitable for them.
It took us 4+ hours to get round the entire zoo. Also, highly recommend taking a toddler leash if you have little ones running around as you won't lose them. Pack water, snacks and extra clothes for your kids too as accidents happen often. It's a whole day trip!

This is a lovely zoo with so many animals! The paths were easy to follow and there were great places to stop and rest or eat. There were several demonstrations with animals throughout the day that were very informative and fun.

We had such an amazing time. Zoo is well kept and enclosures are large enough. There's so much to see. Would have liked if the parking meters were inside too. We didn't realise that we'll spend that much time and had to get all the way to outside to increase our time.

While I am not a fan of zoos in general, I appreciate the enjoyment and educational value this place provide for children. There are interesting materials and resources for learning. The zoo is well maintained and has pleasant picnic areas with shade, which are perfect for breaks on hot days. Limited parking requires planning and a short walk.

Must be the best zoo I’ve visited world wide. The animals are mostly kept in very open environments mimicking their natural habitats, they are clearly well kept and their welfare seems to be priority #1. Conservation is a key theme followed by public education. Animals are kept in their correct geographical zone, so kids will build up a more authentic knowledge of habitats and geographies. Human needs are well met too with several refreshment facilities and public conveniences. A very reasonable entrance price too! A credit to Auckland / NZ.

Amazing day to go the Zoo, wasn’t too sure of the parking so we parked a minute away on Motions Road which turned out to be the best considering how busy it was.
We were lucky to see most of the animals but missed seeing some, probably as it was so hot for the animals.
I would suggest booking a time (booking is essential in orange) before 3:30 as it would be hard to see the entire zoo before it closes at 5:30.
Looking forward to seeing the new additions.

Nice day out to the zoo but it was very busy and parking was fully packed. A lot has been upgraded since my last two visits (5 and 10 years ago). Each area has its own cafe and seats on the way so much more convenient. Also, the loop is complete so you can easily bypass certain areas and get linked to main route without too much of a turn around.

I enjoyed my time visiting Auckland Zoo! I got to see a lot more animals than my last visit. I've posted some videos and photos of my visit. Feel free to view them 😇
There are lots of new sites to see, and the orangutans are a must-see! The jungle dome was pretty cool with the alligators chilling about and lots of different fish. I can't wait to go back and see the size difference of the arowana fish from my last visit!
Carpark gets fully occupied really fast, so arriving early will help with that. Otherwise, there will be some spots on the road with a limit of 120 minutes.
The food was decent. I liked the hot chocolate with oat milk, too.
Staff and volunteer staff are super friendly and informative! I enjoyed my conversation with one of the volunteer staff about the orangutans, and I got to touch the animals' hair that they were displaying 😎
It was such a fun experience visiting the zoo. I'll definitely come back.

Everytime we have been there, our young fella has spent at least 4-5 hours at the zoo. The New Zealand. Auckland zoo is an incredible space for wildlife enthusiasts of all ages. Boasting a rich tapestry of biodiversity and clear conservation efforts, this zoo offers an experience that educates and entertains.
Upon entering the zoo, visitors are greeted by lush greenery and meticulously designed large habitats that mirror the natural environments of the animals. From the majestic lions prowling in their savannah like enclosure to the many different monkeys swinging in the trees, every exhibit is thoroughly crafted to provide animals with ample space and enrichment (there are even small rivers going through the zoo)
For me particularly important is the possibility of taking good quality pictures and the zoo excels also in this design area allowing visitors to position themselves always at adequate angles free from fences and dirty glasses to shoot against interesting green backgrounds.
In addition to the animals, the zoo offers an ample range of dining options and well maintained facilities.
Overall, the Auckland zoo is a must if you enjoy this type of experiences.

Great exhibit of animals, all seemed lively and happy. Zoo staff gave informative and exciting talks on a schedule, and the zoo was much larger than I initially anticipated. It quickly turned from what I thought was going to be a 1 hour stroll into a 3.5 hour learning adventure. It takes about 3~4 hours to see everything or if you have one exhibit you particularly enjoy there is a direct path to nearly every exhibit. I had a lovely day at the zoo.

The Sky Tower is a landmark in Auckland, New Zealand that offers panoramic views of the surrounding communities as well as a revolving restaurant and bungee-jumping platform. The tower is situated at 328 metres above street level and has three observation levels namely the main observation, sky deck and sky cafe.
Very nice place in the city. Great for wide panorama view but also for some refreshments. Yeah, it's a bit pricy but these places around the whole world are like that. So even a cup of good coffee is worthy here because the view around is just different as from the other places in Auckland.
If you are willing to spend more time and money as well then you will never regret it cuz the food is also awesome.

Goes without saying please Visit this!!! Absolutely stunning panoramic view of the whole city and beyond! What we Absolutely loved was that on the windows they have described what we are seeing and the meaning behind it. The staff is so courteous and they even have clear window panes to look underneath. We made a reservation but when we got there the lines were minimal (I'm sure because of covid) you can also dine there but definitely need reservation for that!

If you are visiting Auckland and have time a must is the Sky Tower. Once up the Sky Deck which is the Main observation area you can get 360-degree view of Auckland and on a clear day the views are just phenomenal, it's said you can see 51 miles from the sky tower.
Yes I wouldn't say it's a cheap experience but it's certainly worth it even if it's just once you do it. The tower also is so well built with high strength, high performance concrete, it's also suspected that during up to a 8.0 magnitude earthquake the tower would still stand and honestly you can believe this by just looking at it.
When visiting we found the staff to be very welcoming and friendly and overall there isn't much else to say other than look at the pictures and see for yourself if it's something you want to witness for real.

I give it 5 stars, however, with a minus. You really get amazing views of the Auckland. You see the city sprawling out to all sides. However, comparing with similar attractions in similar countries it is a bit shabby and aged.

I have been here twice before, once during the day, another for dinner on the revolving restaurant. This time was 7pm on a Monday evening when the visibility was amazing. The panoramic view of our city make me love it more and more. I would recommend the 60 floor -sky deck-200 meters above and the bridge and motorway look stunning. Particularly the window is much clearer on Sky Deck. I also bought a pair of red merino gloves. God bless Auckland, God bless our NZ.

I'm happy to share my review of the Sky Tower! Our recent visit, starting from the 51st floor and ascending to the 60th floor, left us with an unforgettable experience. The moment we stepped onto the observation deck, we were greeted with breathtaking views that stretched as far as the eye could see. The city's beauty and vibrancy were on full display, creating a sense of wonder and awe.
The transition between floors was seamless, and the journey itself was an adventure. It's evident that the Sky Tower team has invested in creating an enjoyable and well-organized experience for visitors. The staff's hospitality and assistance further added to the positive atmosphere.
From the panoramic windows to the interactive exhibits, every element was thoughtfully designed to enhance our understanding of the city's landscape and history. Standing at such heights allowed us to truly appreciate the urban tapestry below.
Overall, our visit to the Sky Tower was a highlight of our trip. The opportunity to see the world from a different perspective and capture incredible memories is something we will cherish. Without a doubt, this is an attraction that offers not just a good experience, but a truly exceptional one.

Seattle has their Space Needle, Toronto has their CN Tower and Auckland has their Sky Tower. All have similar purposes as a communication towers, tourist attraction/ Observation deck and iconic land mark that can be seen long distances away. I find these towers very useful as a visual land reference when walking about in an unfamiliar city. I also like how they change the light colours of the towers at night. It does create a post card look.

Visited on a Sunday morning, no queue getting in and up the tower, bought my ticket on the day no hassle quick and easy, I ended up spending a couple hours checking out the views floor 51 is the main observation deck, but you can go up to floor 60 for sky deck, incredible views, the glass seemed cleaner on the top floor but as you can do the tower walk I guess it's easier to keep clean who knows, the sky deck floor did get busier and there was a queue to get back down the one lift but enjoying the view it's easy to either wait or do another lap around and enjoy the view again, watching the boats in and out of the harbour, well worth a visit in my opinion a good way to see the city (helps getting bearings for wandering around the city for me)

A great way to see the whole city and enjoy the sights. It's also a thrilling time if you want to bungee jump or do the Skywalk which isn't for the faint of heart. The sky bar is also very enjoyable. The trip to the Sky Tower in Auckland was exhilarating. The panoramic views from the observation deck were breathtaking, offering a stunning perspective of the city and its surroundings. The glass floor added an extra thrill, making it a memorable experience. Well worth it. Great information bites everywhere, and the staff were excellent, friendly and informative. The dining experience is awesome! You can see the 360 degree view of the city while enjoying your dinner an a glass of wine. Cheers!👍

A quick ride to the top via the elevator and outstanding views of Auckland spread out before us. The platform is a little shy of 200m above the ground and for the more adventurous you can do a 360° walk around outside (while attached to a harness) or even simulate a free fall off the side (being slowed by your lines before hitting the sidewalk).
For the less brave, looking down at the tiny cars below, while standing on the thick toughened glass in the viewing platform, might be more than enough to make your heart race.

One of the best place to visit in Auckland. It’s joint through Casino. Access for everyone. Paid entry to tower top . Different levels to visit. Awesome view of Auckland from the top.
Harry & Harnaaz Wairar — Google review
We were very confused when we got there as we couldn't find the entrance. You have to go inside the casino then down the escalator. We had bought online tickets which included the Hop on/off bus & the email said there was no need to print them, but when we got to the desk, ready to go into the tower, we were told to go back outside & have them printed at the bus stop. So we weren't very impressed with that. The views are very good, but it is definitely over priced.
Janice Jeffries — Google review
As this was the third we'd been up in six weeks the novelty had started to wear off. It's still worth doing but perhaps Auckland has less to see than other cities with sky towers. Reasonably priced but disappointing that you can't get a drink unless you pre book your visit so spur of the moment decisions are not the best.
Adrian Walter — Google review
Soared up to top in just 4 seconds. A lot of visitors had to turn away from the front window that showed the climb to the top but not me. It was an adrenaline rush. Off the elevator, the whole city is beneath your feet. Auckland is beautiful. The observation deck is clean, bright and tall. There are wooden benches to sit on while observing the view. There are also transparent mats for those daring to stand on. Caused my heart to flutter for a moment. Missing is a souvenir shop at the top or a kiosk for drinks. Take another lift to get up higher and see sky jumpers risk their life for 5 seconds of their life.

The Auckland War Memorial Museum is one of New Zealand's most significant and visited tourist attractions. It contains a permanent collection of Maori taonga (treasures) as well as temporary exhibits showcasing local and natural history.
I've visited this museum around 10+ years ago and on my visit today it felt like there was more to see before. Definitely lots of things changed, some exhibitions became computerised, which to me is a bit sad, but inevitable with time and progress. Other things were greatly improved and made the museum look awesome.
I'd like to see more on level 1 (the world), things that relate to New Zealand and over all hope that the museum will only get better with time.

Got be one of the best places to take your kids for some fun, history and culture. Hours of fun for them. Though these days I prefer to relax at the Cafe or out side while the older kids explore. That said I do visit the new displays and exhibits. The Greek one was fascinating.

Staff are always friendly and professional. It’s not just about history but also New Zealand culture and nature. My kids love this museum, not only there is a kid zone, but also volcanoes where they get to learn about the history of volcanic eruptions in NZ and experience a simulation of the eruption. There also different exhibitions throughout the year.

Spectacular museum!!
Plenty to see and do.
We spent 4 hours there exploring and immersing ourselves in Maori Culture.
The TRexs are not to be missed and we had fun with locating the AR dinos throughout the museum!
Definitely worth the price of admission.

A must see if you are visiting Auckland.
Don't get misled by the name, there are entire floors for the Aboriginal people in New Zealand and Polinician islands, and for the natural history of the region.
I didn't even go to the 3rd level which is the war museum, that was not what I was after.
In-fact this is the only place I come across where you can experience the heritage of the Maori people. The Maori villages I visited are just commercial tourist attractions, except for the nature.

The Auckland Memorial Museum is an amazing place for everyone🥰, including people with disabilities.♿️ They have great facilities that make it easy for everyone to enjoy.
It's also a perfect spot for families – kids love it, and grandparents have a great time too. 🚼👨👩👧👦👨👦👭🧑🤝🧑You should definitely visit if you want a fun and educational experience for all ages❗️
A coffee☕️🍵🍪🥤🥪🍩 spot is available, and there's a pleasant dining area for those who bring their own food🍱.
The Museum also offers the convenience of FREE 🚗 car parking for up to 180 minutes, making your visit hassle-free. Plus, it's surrounded by a beautiful park area🌋, adding to the overall charm of this wonderful destination💖🇳🇿.

Beautifully displayed with a wide array of topics and broad history covered. Very enjoyable and I love that it's free for residents and for those of us that aren't, the price was very reasonable. Lucky to be able to add the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibit for only $9NZ

A place with lot to learn, from Maori history to world wars, from ancient animals to modern animals, volcanos, asian art, and many more. A very informative sections on various different topics. My favourite is the volcano section. Definitely try out the stimulation. There are activities for kids as well. I recommend going in the morning around the time they open, because if you really want to read through information and get to know things, it will take time.

Excellent place to visit for rainy day - indoor activities. We visited the current exhibition-Egypt - in the time of Pharaohs. Very informative and unique displays. They have a gift shop which have good selections of souvenirs. The restaurant inside there is very good too. We enjoyed the visit.

I don't know how, but we got in here for free, went around, looked at stunning exhibitions, bought some souvenirs and left saying what an adventure! That's how interesting a museum has got to be. I also like how the mask mandate poster features Roman Emperor Nero!

One of the best museums I’ve ever been to. The name is a bit misleading as the non-war exhibits were the real standout for me. The Maroi displays were great as was the Auckland life expo and the NZ photos. Allow yourself 3-4hours to get around and a bit more to see the botanics and walk up the bloody hills to get there.

The Auckland War Memorial Museum is a must-visit attraction that immerses you in Auckland's rich history. I had the pleasure of exploring it on a rainy afternoon and discovered that it's free for Auckland residents, creating a vibrant atmosphere even in gloomy weather. The museum beautifully showcases Maori culture, offering an insightful journey into their traditions and heritage. While tickets may be slightly pricey for foreigners, the experience is undoubtedly worthwhile. If you're a museum lover, allocate more than four hours to fully appreciate the extensive exhibits. Prepare to be captivated by the fascinating stories and immerse yourself in Auckland's vibrant past at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Went to see Peter - fantastic to see an example up close. Overall the museum is a pretty good stop. Lines can be a little long, and some of the 'modern' exhibit styles struggle to present a cohesive narrative (why are these things here together?). But the majority of the exhibits are well put together and show a rich history with good background information.
David Vedder — Google review
We spent half a day here. It was really interesting to see all the different areas and displays. Kids loved the section where they could explore the animals. And the volcano eruption experience was really good!
Thelma van den Berg — Google review
The best museum to visit in New Zealand thanks to the Māori cultural performance. It started with a beautiful smile and welcome at the ticket counter. You have to do the Māori cultural performance. They were beyond amazing and what was said, taught, sung and performed was so emotional, inspiring, and spot on true. It is not a show, it is a glimpse into a way of life, and you are lucky if you get the chance to experience that.

Not just a museum, an experience.
The building itself is amazing !
Sections : WW, Pacific islands, volcanoes and earthquakes, antiquity, rocks, contemporary collections about the city of Auckland...
Just go, you won't be disappointed.

Was visiting as part of our cruise. Walked from the dock in Auckland. Beautiful and at times challenging walk. Arrived at museum to find international guests are required to pay to enter. Chose to walk around surroundings and gardens instead.

If u are a residence of Auckland, u are eligible for free entrance. Working holiday visa holders can also enjoy this benefit. Will be great if u can spend half day here exploring. Unfortunately the T-Rex fossil will be taken down for good from 11 Dec 2023 onwards. Might need to ask the museum management when will it be put back into display.

What a fabulous museum. Awesome displays and special exhibitions. We did a guided tour for an hour; highly recommended. I loved the photographic display by Robin Morrison; special photos of the Sth Is....and the people of that time. We need to return; we were there for 3+ hours but just scratched the surface

Great place to visit plenty to see, would have preferred to see more information about weapons over the years. The First World War exhibition was sanitized with little about injuries and effects on soldiers coming back. The top floor was saddest with lists of the dead, what a great loss to all.
Mount Eden is an upscale residential area in Auckland that boasts of a prominent volcanic peak called Maungawhau. This cone-shaped mountain offers scenic hiking and jogging trails, affording stunning views of Hauraki Gulf from the top. Eden Park, a renowned sports venue where rugby and cricket matches are held, attracts huge crowds. Mount Eden Road is home to several vintage stores, bookshops, trendy cafes and wine bars. Dominion Road houses several Asian eateries famous for their dumplings.

Very lovely, helpful and knowledgeable staff, from David the shuttle driver who shared with us many local tips/well-known places to the zipline operator and guides Rosie and Sophie, who are so friendly and nice. It's quite refreshing to see someone who is very passionate about their job, the environment, sustainability and know all little cool facts about all the plants that we walked past. Thank you for the great experience guys! 😃👍

A must do experience in Waiheke. Bookings are recommended. Awesome staff who take great care of you. There is a total of 3 zip lines on the way, with each one getting gradually more exciting. The guided walk back up is fairly easy going and a very informative talk along the way. Great family experience and beautiful views as you glide over tree tops. Don't forget to leave your problems (rocks) behind

Fantastic experience! Felt very safe yet fun and the staff was very encouraging and entertaining. The 3 ziplines were just long and high enough to get great views and to get that thrill of speed. The nature walk was a bonus as well and learned alot about the area and the history. Thank you for a great time!

These guys were very professional and fantastic to work with. Our guides, Dylan and Frasier were amazing and fun! This place has incredible views of the country side and bay. The walk back to the top was on a well groomed trail winding its way through the jungle. We had a great time!

Ziplining was awesome! Amazing location, great friendly guides and a good cause as a large part of the money goes into reforestation and caring for the land.
Wish there could be a slower, longer Iplime to appreciate the views even more, but the walk back up through the bush was a good way to complement the full experience.

We visited EcoZip and found the operation to be exceptionally well run, safe, and fun. The staff were wonderful. The zip line runs weren’t as exciting as we’ve experienced in other parts of New Zealand or places like Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, however they were still enjoyable. The walk through the forest was arguably the favorite for all. It was magical and informative. Overall we would recommend EcoZip for the entirety of what the experience is. Match it with a visit to Batch Winery (just one hill away) and you have a great Waiheke day!

Had two great guides with us who were knowledgeable about the local ferns and wildlife around the Bush too and how important it is to protect it.

It was such amazing experience at EcoZip Adventures the kids and I had yesterday morning. We are from Gold Coast, Australia and just visited Waiheke Island for a day trip. It was the best decision to choose this experience. All staff members we have come across were very professional. Got picked up from the Waiheke Pier by warmly greeting staff Marie. We had Ella and Lucy as our guides for the zip lines and nature walk. The place, the view, the weather, another family that we met- everything was beautiful and perfect. We absolutely loved and enjoyed this experience. Love to come back again in the future for sure.

Great set up, views are amazing and staff were friendly. Felt it was expensive for what you experienced and took a long time for how little you do. Took around 3 hours to experience 3 zip lines and then walk which is described as a nature forest walk and it is just the walk back to the top once you have completed the zips. Glad I did it to see the island in a cool way but found it expensive for what it is.

Excellent. The driver was kind enough to let my husband and I in Onerea town explore because we got to the island early. He also recommended where the best Gelato to get, and he was right. Great, wonderful experience! Daniel and Jack were so helpful and safely harnessed us up. We flew over the forest canopy and vineyards on three separate zip lines each time adding length and height. They took the time to photograph us with our own camera. There are lockers so you can bring a backpack and bathrooms at the top. The hike was great to learn about the flora and fauna, plus get a rest from the climbs. The tour can let you off afterwards at the village above Onamia beach so bring a swimsuit and towel to do that, too! Then you can walk back downhill to the ferry. Also, when you catch the ferry in Aukland, give yourself extra time to get in the queue as we almost didn’t make the ferry as they only allow so many to board the ferry. When we signed up through Get Your Guide, make sure you buy both the zip line tickets and ferry tickets, then you will get an email to fill out the disclosure form which will save time when you arrive. This was a great experience!

Waiheke Island is a popular day trip destination from Auckland, which can be reached by taking a 40-minute ferry ride. The island offers plenty of options for visitors to enjoy, such as famous vineyards, diverse beaches and adventurous activities including zip lining and sea kayaking. Waiheke was once a quiet summer vacation retreat with hippie beach houses dotting its edges but now boasts of around 35 vineyards along with friendly locals and charming shops and bars.

We just went last Saturday and to my surprised 😮 there’s a long line waiting for us. We arrived in Viaduct at 10:00 am and get in at 11:40 am. Around 35 mins travel time. When we arrived in Waiheke Island we waited for another 1 hour for the Tour Bus. Lots of patience you need if your going here 😤 we had our lunch at cable bay vineyard at around 3pm and just enjoyed the rest of the day.

I fell in love with this beautiful island. Family visited this on a Saturday through a ferry from East Auckland as we brought a van with us. Left 8am trip returned 7pm, had enough time to explore the beaches, vineyard, Catholic church, CBD for our brunch. We had a taste of oysters and wine tasting for our late lunch. Able to enjoy Waiheke ostend market every Saturday from 8am to 1pm, grandchildren loved the art gallery and parks. See you again.

Great day trip from Auckland. Better if you find accommodation there for a night or two so you can enjoy the winery's and rend a bike to go around the island. It has amazing spots all around. I highly recommend to do the AT hop transport car and use that to travel to the island as the tour agency the rip you off 45$ return ticket.

Waiheke Island is only 40 minutes ferry ride from downtown Auckland and has a lot to offer. You can walk, ride a bike or take a shuttle bus to all attractions. If you can walk I strongly recommend you do so. It’s a lovely walk to Oneroa Beach, Cable Bay and Mudbrick vineyards

Just about 20 km away from Auckland, you find this landmass, which is so magical and beautiful. Island has a population of over 1000 permeant residence. This unspoilt beauty is all about nature and landscape. I took the ferry in the morning and after speeding a day I came back to Auckland in the evening. The lifestyle, culture and locals within the island was inspiring. They were friendly relaxed and fun. Next time I would spend a couple of days on the island itself, rent a beach house and wake up to the sound of the waves. Also, I wish I could own a home on top the of a cliff like in the photos and retire in a heavy island like this.

In the summer season, it is super busy which requires preparing well to enjoy.
Things to know:
- Ferry: As the ticket says, it would be really good to arrive at the ferry terminal an hour before your estimated departing time. We aimed to take a ferry at 9 am and we arrived around 8.20 am. The 8 am ferry arrived at 8.25 am and left from the downtown ferry terminal at 8.35 am. We were super lucky, and I am unsure how this would impact the rest of the hours ferry.
- Hop-On Hop-Off Explorer Bus: Although we purchased tickets, we didn't use them. Yes.. it is a waste of money, but we wanted to avoid possible hassles. On Friday, the interval is an hour and most of the winery at the bus stop was fully booked. Some people complained of 1.30 hours waiting at the bus stop.
- Rent a car: In the end, we rented a car a day after checking all the recent reviews.
-- Pros: good to go wherever you go, enjoy some viewpoints and avoid crowded spots.
-- Cons : limits for drinking and unable to go Man O war bay road if it is not a 4wd car.

It's beautiful island and if you are a wine-lover this is a must.
We went there for a day and used the fullers hop-on hop-off bus; and highly recommended to start early to make the most out of it as it's quite expensive. It's a good way to have look at the entire island then decide which stop fits you the most.
We had lunch and few wines in Mudbrick (also quite expensive too) but the food’s yum.

If you are in Auckland , this place is a never miss one . 35-40mims on boat will take you to the Waiheke . It’s a scenic island with great vineyards and some little beaches. You can go around the island by bus or on bicycles. Vineyard tours are the main attraction and you can pre book these tours. Most these vineyards offer great food too…views on the way to and from the island on ferry is also mesmerising.

Breathtaking place. If you want to see the entire island in a day, take a bus or hire an electric bike. I completed the trails on the southwest and northwest sides, and they are beautiful.
If you have some time in Auckland, do not miss out on Waiheke island. If you're there, be sure you check out the shops and the wineries if that's your fancy.

Lovely day trip to see the sea, beautiful beaches and natural beauty of this small but picturesque island. It was easy waving on a well scheduled ferry from Auckland’s downtown Harbour to go to Matiatia ferry wharf and loved the smooth fresh air ferry ride. (I purchased tickets for both the ferry ride and hop on hop off bus shuttle at Auckland ferry terminal and was pleased I did so)
Once on Waiheke island I hopped onto the scheduled 30 minute island circuit ride and enjoyed exploring the many vineyards, several beaches and a good forest walk. There is lots of to do on your day trip so be mindful of the last hop-on hop-off bus on the schedule.
Make sure that you respect this beautiful island and avoid going off established pathways, put garbage in its proper place and keep your eyes open for the road traffic. Local drivers don’t have much patience for pedestrians.
If you like my reviews, photos or videos then don’t stay stuck on an island just jump on and off and hit the like button

Man O' War Vineyards
Vineyard
Food & Drink
Man O' War Vineyards is a charming beachfront winery with a cozy tasting room and a pet-friendly picnic area. While it's a bit secluded, the experience is worth it. The cheese board offers delightful selections sourced from outside the vineyard, complemented by their own delectable honey and robust olives. The wine tasting experience is enjoyable, with both reds and whites to savor. Visitors can also indulge in farm-to-table cuisine at the restaurant.
Amazing how this place has grown over the years. Lots of friendly staff, table service, gluten free options. Wonderful wines. Great on warm summer days, a good indoor section for rainy days.
The road out can be a little rough, but just come by boat!

We are big fans of Man'o'War wines, so we took the ferry to Waiheke and rented a car just to visit your restaurant and tasting room today. The service we received was unfortunately absolutely abysmal.
The service wasn't great in the restaurant, and after we ordered two steaks, we had to wait over 30 minutes for the steaks, and then the steaks were lukewarm. So we thought perhaps the restaurant was overworked, so went to try the tasting room next.
We waited over 5 minutes at the var before the guy behind the bar even acknowledged us. A woman came behind the bar before that, but said we had to wait for the man, who was in charge there. After 6 minutes, the man came over, and I said I wanted to do the $24 tasting session. He told us we would have to wait 20 minutes, as he was dealing with two large parties at the time.
Meanwhile, he seemed to take 3 - 5 minutbes for every single wine order he was receiving from other customers. Other customers who came in after me were sold bottles of wine while I waited.
Another party of 2 also requested a tasting session, after I had requested it, and they were told to wait too. After 20 minutes, the gutmy behind the bar came outside where we were told to wait, but served that other couple first. He took a lot of time doing it - at least another 5-7 minutes. At that point I just gave up! I'd already waited over 30 minutes, and hadn't received a single drink!
I've been to at least 25 wine tasting rooms in NZ, and this was by far the worst service I've ever encountered. Absolutely shocking!

This vineyard is a bit secluded thus a bit pricey. The cheese board was great though, cheese is absolutely lovely (sourced outside the vineyard), the honey which was from the vineyard was amazingly good, the olive is quite strong also from them, the bread is lovely, the red is something else not bad thought but not for me. The white is good. Overall it was a good place to unwind and enjoy some company of friends or family. If you don't have a rental, call them to book for a shuttle.

The wine is incredible and I've since purchased a bunch more after arriving back in Australia. I just wish I didn't live so far from it. The tasting room by the beach is gorgeous as is the drive to it. An unforgettable experience for us. Grab a bottle for the ferry ride back to Auckland.

Gorgeous setting. We were a big group and the staff was great with the wine tasting. Only downfall is having to pay $30 corkage. Nowhere does it say this. The takeaway bottles have prices on the menu but if you wish to drink it on site they charge $30. Seems very steep. The lady at the till was pretty rude when I questioned her on this.

Had an amazing time here with kids. It's got a newly built playground, a great area for a picnic, food service and most of all a wine tasting. Both food and wines are exceptional and one of the reasons I would come back here. The staff is friendly, helpful and accommodating. Come here for an hour and stay the whole day! Highly recommended

Man o War is a must-visit winery on Waiheke, wonderful menu (where there's something new every time we go), gorgeous location and knowledgeable and attentive staff. I would recommend booking, to insure you can get the whole experience! Restaurant, wine tasting and a walk along the beach. We'll be back next year!

Pleasant, but not spectacular.
Lovely beachfront location, but so is half the island. Menu is very limited and a bit hit and miss - arancini was possibly the blandest thing I've ever eaten, heirloom tomatoes were stunning.
Staff tried hard but simply had no clue about any of the wine. I got a comical rambling comparison between two chardonnays that ended up being nothing more than 'this one is usually more expensive than the other one'.
I'd say it's not worth the drive, but the drive itself was beautiful.

Didn't take long at all to get there by boat from east auckland. A great spot for friends and for the family. Really kid friendly, a great big playground and plenty of open space for them to run around. Great music and a lively vibe. A nice selection of food and drinks, and if it's getting too hot, the beach is right there for a quick dip. Will definitely be going back.

Great location good food. Regretfully the staffing is very light on expect to wait 30 minutes plus on any engagement. U would be better off ordering all meals and drinks the one time u might get waited on.

The most stunning scenery and location. I can see why it's so popular. Book a table, (unless you're bringing a picnic blanket, which is a cool option) we got there at opening time and it filled up super quickly. The Rose Pinque was delicious.

Very nice winery in a secluded location, felt intimate despite being the largest vineyard on the island. Recommend the shuttle bus if you're not comfortable on windy gravel roads. The wine tasting was great and the staff were lovely. The restaurant is quite pricey but excellent quality foods, and we did appreciate the farm-to-table mentality. It was easy to spend several hours here enjoying the wine, the food, the scenery and atmosphere.

Man O War was incredible! We took the direct ferry with Explore from the city to the vineyard which was so easy + we had beautiful views on the way!
The Man O War staff gave us a warm welcome on arrival and the service by their staff was amazing, everyone was incredibly professional & truly cared about our experience.
The food and wine were outstanding!
Can’t wait to be back & highly recommend!

such a beautiful remote area, worth going here for the location alone. the food was simple done well, the best type. i don't usually rave over hot chips (not what i go to a winery for), however the truffle fries here are absolutely insane... even the husband who is a simple steak burgers pizza chips type of guy was blown away. the chorizo pizza was delicious too - the gf base we (i) requested wasn't stodgy or crumbly like most are which is worthy of mentioning. the wine was nice too, not spectacular or anything but still nice...not a huge selection on the restaurant menu tho.

What a dreamy place!! Great spot to spend a couple hours for a tasting and lunch. Service is on the slower side but come on - it’s wine country! Give them a break. I came on a Monday and sadly they were out of the oysters and clams, so for oyster lovers I would recommend visiting Wednesday or later to be on the early side of the week when they stock up.
The absolute best service was the shuttle service to/from the ferry terminal for only $10 each way. Fi is awesome!
Great time and can’t wait to come back.

Visited: 1st April 2pm. Rude, unfriendly staff, lack of hospitality and poor communication!
Was wanting to do a wine tasting and get a bottle, so I walked towards the wine tasting room and was stopped by a red headed female staff member who stopped me saying, “didn’t you see the big sign in front? You just walked past that big sign that says no walk ins”! The sign clearly says “restaurant is fully booked, no walk ins until 3pm”. Nothing to do with wine tasting or purchasing wine. Unnecessary attitude and behaviour towards customers from front of house staff. I witnessed this again on several occasions with in 10sec of standing there amazed at how she was speaking to customers. Bad experience.

Worth the trip on a sunny day!! Absolutely blown away by our visit here. Stunning location, incredible food, in a low fuss setting that felt special. Thank you for a fabulous lunch.

We were excited to drive out to Man o War for wine tasting, as we enjoy their wines.
It was a stunning venue, and the wines were good, but the service was disappointing.
We felt unwelcome and an inconvenience. We had a large group and hadn’t pre-booked, so had to wait for wine tasting which was no problem for us, so we went to grab a glass of wine and got told we could only drink wine on the grass and not on a table undercover or under an umbrella, as we weren’t eating - even though there was hardly anyone there and there were a lot of free tables. The wine tasting wasn’t a great experience - wine was poured in a hurry, with hardly any explanation of the wines, then we were left to it. We asked for the bartender to take a photo and he wasn’t impressed but begrudgingly took it anyway. We also saw people wait over five minutes to be seated in the restaurant - even though staff were present.
We went to other wineries that day and had much more engaging service.
