We took a group of 17 to Cobblestones this weekend. We were late arriving but Diane stayed open past the usual closing time especially for us and the group enjoyed their visit very much. Fantastic museum and great customer service.

Really interesting place to visit when in Greytown! They are always adding new exhibits and great to see how things use to be and learn a bit of history about what life was like when people arrived in the region!

We popped into Cobblestones Museum Greytown just a few days ago and had a great time! We met Julie at reception who was extremely friendly and helpful, she gave us a brief, informative overview of the history of Cobblestones Museum, as well as a decent, easy to follow map and sent us on our way. The Museum is very nicely put together, easy to follow and not overwhelming, with some interactive parts too! Heading outside you’re surrounding by beautiful Heritage buildings that you can explore at your own pace. We bumped into Tony and Graeme too whilst wondering around, both of them provided more info, answered any questions and Tony happily gave us a demonstration on the old Print Presses!! It was great!! We’re in our early 30’s and really enjoyed our time. We’d quite happily take our younger nieces and nephews here, as well as our parents. Fun for all ages! Janette has been great over email too! A must do when in Greytown! Open nearly everyday, 10am until 4pm (October – May), 10am until 3pm (June – September). Thanks team! @saltyskin

A unique and interesting settler museum with heaps to look at in the replica village. The highlights are the hospital, cottage, and school house set up as they would have been 100 years ago. Would be excellent if you have inquisitive children. It could be improved slightly with some more interactive hands on parts though.
Great museum wish I could have stayed longer very cool solution to steep hills

Well worth the small charge of $7 an adult, $2 child over 5. Volunteer was extremely knowledgeable. There is so much history. The Fell Locomotive is the only one left out of the six used. This is a must visit for anyone ousting through. There is also the heritage museum next door but separate identity with another door charge. It's based alot on the military camp.

Well, I had my arm twisted to visit this place today (I had no intention of going), and it ended up really interesting. The guy who showed us around's enthusiasm was infectious, and I learned a lot. Congratulations to all the people who put it together. That guy Fell was a genius.

Way back more than 100 years ago. This place is superb, I really love it. Even though I don't really like history, this place and a lovely staff makes me love it. The museum is awesome. You get to see the real last fell Locomotive. Get to watch a documentary. It's very specific. They also get some fun stuff for kids😍 highly recommended. They have entrance fee but the experience is worth more than that, the staff is so friendly and amazing. They get clean toilet too. The road to the place is adventurous for me😁

Life size exhibits of both fell engine and a brake / guard's van on display allowing you to see how the extra braking as well as the extra wheels that grip the centre rail. Loco 199 served on the Rimatuka Incline from 1878 until the line closed in 1955 when the tunnel deviation was opened.
Many displays to illustrate the working life and equipment of this unique line in the world. Also many stories describing the social history both from the railwaymen as well as their women folk who lived alongside this railway. How to manage your washing on the line to avoid locomotive smoke! Or preparing to defend her children when Japanese prisoners of war were taken over the line to the POW Camp in Featherston.
Well worth its admission for entry.

Visited the Museum after walking the Rimutaka rail trail - cross creek towards the top. Entry was $6 and well worth it. I visited on Saturday and Malcolm was providing a very knowledgeable tour of the Fell engine and how it worked. This was very interesting.
The whole museum is packed with history and very interesting pictures and newspaper articles. I definitely learnt a lot while there.
Amazing to hear that they had to replace the break blocks every time they descended the Rimutaka incline as the break's completely wore out.
Having walked and cycled the Rimutaka track I found this very interesting.

Go visit this. You will not regret it.
It’s a great little place, top quality exhibits well presented and explained.
Only remaining Fell locomotive in the world, genuinely unique design, beautifully restored.
If you’re going to walk or bike the Rimutaka rail trail you should go here (first preferably) to see the engine sand all about the history and operation the rail link.
We had a great visit and very informative tour guide (thank you).

An excellent museum with a great tribute to some local railway history. Really want to go up and visit Cross Creek now.
Very knowledgeable staff and some toy trains to keep the kids occupied.
The only thing I'd say is that it could be laid out a bit more effectively to better tell the story.

Really enjoyable museum with attention to detail and so much information on the fascinating Fell locomotive, braking carriage, and the lives of those associated with the running of the line. The volunteer staff are amazing and we had a personal guide through the first part of the museum. Totally worth the visit if you're just passing through Featherston.

This won't be everyone's cup of tea, but for a train buff like me it was heaven. It's a small but beautifully presented museum, clearly a labour of love. It's very worth a look for anyone with an interest in trains.

Exactly the kind of place that you should stumble across in small, slightly off the beaten track towns everywhere. Esoteric, one topic museum that's so niche it needs a less broad term to describe it, hugely interesting, really well laid out with loads of great things and enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff. Brilliant. Pretend you haven't read this review and just wander in randomly.

Very interesting museum, lots of information, easy to see the mechanism under the engine, great film to watch, wonderfully informative and helpful staff ... plus copies of Joy Cowley's "The Hero of the Hill" to buy!!! A lovely experience for the small grandchildren 🚂

This place is a must do. It's a fascinating insight to our early settlers history and the hardship of getting produce over the Rimutaka range. The Fell locomotive and brake cars were an igeneuse method.

Current big show: it was really good to see so many things I remembered from many visits over the years. I think it would be a really good idea to repeat a grand showing like this every 7-8 years, so that we can see again the images/objects that we enjoy but that disappear after an exhibition closes. I know researchers can find them on a catalogue and ask to see them, but the public don't usually do that!
Alison Viskovic — Google review
This is a lovely little place to come and have a little look around. I can tell there is a lot of real effort put in to all the art and there are nice spots for the kiddos too, cafe aint half bad ither.

We went to The Dowse yesterday for the first time - recommended to us as a must-do in the Wellington region by friends and I would definitely agree with them!
The staff were very helpful, pointing us to the best route to experience the Dowse, and also holding our umbrella (and making sure we didn't leave it behind!).
The exhibitions were interesting, fun, humourous, and thought-provoking. It was a wonderful mix of visceral experiences (Chromaflage, and My River Goes With Me) as well as our history and aspirations for the future (Nuku Tewhatewha, and Māori Moving Image ki Te Awakairangi) and just a general good old giggle (Droop).
Really enjoyable, and appreciated the two EV chargers in the carpark too.

'Rainscreen' by @athfieldarchitects & artist Simon Morris is a bold urban façade of aluminium, giving @thedowse a distinctive visual identity - with thousands of diamond-shaped perforations creating ever-changing shadows. But we didn't realise until recently that the design also contributes to the energy efficiency of the building, with moveable panels designed to manage solar heat! In fact, the extensive 2006 makeover of our 1971 Dowse Art Museum is part of a larger vision of sustainability & a happy hybrid of artistic expression with eco-friendly design - including 3kilowatt solar panels & 'Rock Store', the first heating & cooling system of its kind in NZ, using Wairarapa river stones to hold in the heat or cold.

Liz gave a very informative and interactive tour for us. It was a great experience as we've never been to an alpaca farm before. We got to feed and pet the alpacas while understanding quite an extensive history on the cute animal, normally confused with its relative, llama. It's a recommended place to go.

The Alpaca Place is great. Deserves so much more than the 3 google stars. See Trip advisor for a good idea of the sort of experience you will have. Its a fantastic tour. We have gone on to do business with the wonderful women from The Alpaca Place and now own our own Alpaca. We've been very impressed with the service from being straight out tourists, through to potential buyers, and onto a full delivery service of our purchased alpaca which took a full day of their time at a very reasonable price.

Staglands Wildlife Reserve & Café is an open-air animal farm and petting zoo that offers visitors the opportunity to interact with wildlife in a natural environment. The reserve features tractor rides, feeding areas, and a rustic log cafe for refreshments. It's an ideal outing for adults and children alike. While exploring the park, guests can choose to stay on the walking path or venture down by the stream where they can cross over a wooden log or suspension bridge.
This place is an absolute sanctuary! We went as a group of young adults and had a magical experience. The animals are very friendly and you can pat A LOT of them! They all seemed happy and healthy. Would recommend buying the animal feed for the most animal interaction. We went early on a Saturday before it got busy which was nice as we didn’t have to wait for anything. A really lovely escape from the city.

Such a great outing for both adults and kids. I’d recommend buying a bag of animal food, we didn’t and regretted it.
The park is nicely sized, not too small but also not too big. You can stay on the walking path or you can walk down by the beautiful stream and cross it over a wooden log. Above it is a pretty cool suspension bridge.
The cafe was fine, not the best food or coffee but it did the trick. Service was kind and relatively quick even though it was a busy day, and employees were very kind.

Absolutely brilliant family experience. So beautifully set out, so much for the kids to see and do plus animals and birds to interact with. Added bonus, as a coeliac, was delighted to find such a great range of safe, gluten free food. I am used to making do with a coffee while watching everyone else eat at these kinds of places so am really impressed and would highly recommend.

Staglands is a place to visit if you have toddlers who are really into animals, as they can feed the animals there with the feeds you buy at the ticket office. It was an intimate experience with the animals as you can feed and pat most of them up close!
Unfortunately we didn't get to ride the tractor ride and eat the marshmallows as it wasn't available when we were there. But we had a good picnic outside their cafe and our toddlers enjoyed it thoroughly! They knocked out in the car on the way down the windy road.

Staglands is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Greater Wellington Region. It is a quaint farm themed Wildlife Reserve located in Upper Hutt’s Akatarawa Valley. It is a very exciting environment sure to be loved by the young children. The animals are quite friendly, some can be too friendly and over excited about the food you can give to the animals. The animal food and trout food costs extra. I’ve been going there a very long time, and have never been disappointed. I do think however that there should be more staff around to keep an eye on some of the guests who get too excited around animals, or have little knowledge on how to behave around animals, especially families with little children. The cafe is excellent and the food is very yummy, it can take a while for the food to come out however. As long as you behave around the animals and don’t lose your head around them, your more than welcome, and are sure to have a great time!

What an amazing place even in the pouring rain! The animal, fish and bird life are a delight. So well thought out and beautifully set out around numerous ponds, waterfalls and the river running through the property.

Awesome place to visit with kids and family.
Import notes:
- drive to and from can be quite tight.
- can be a wait for the cafe for food
- wear comfortable shoes as there is loose gravel and inclines
- tractor runs 11am-2pm in 15 minutes intervals,
- Buy feeding food.
Free roaming miniature pigs running around the front, Awesome for kids to touch and feed

We had such a lovely time there! Our 3 year old son absolutely loved feeding and interacting with the animals and learning about new animals that he hasn't seen before. The food at the cafe was delicious and staff were super friendly and helpful! Happy 50th anniversary Staglands! Keep up the amazing work!

Very pleasant path through the park. Kids loved feeding and interacting with the animals. The cafe was honestly delicious and wasn’t crazy expensive. I’d come back just for lunch. We’ve been to a number of wildlife parks around the world and the deer area here with dozens of peacocks up and down the hill was completely unique.
Tim Krug — Google review
Beautiful animal park in a lovely bush setting. Lots of birds with free roaming peacocks, pheasants and chickens, often with babies. Lots of enclosures and aviaries you can go into to get up close and personal with the wildlife. The cockatoo is very friendly and will say hello, the kea are also friendly but more so on days where it's not so busy. The birds especially seem very well cared for. There are also kunekune and other pigs. They had tiny piglets when we were there, who weren't afraid to be stroked if you were slow and quiet with them. The Guinea pigs were naturally skittish, but cute. There is space to sit in their enclosure, if you're quiet and have food, they'll come to you after a while.
I was a little concerned for the cattle and horses - the young Galloway and two Highlands had rather small enclosures, along with the Clydesdale and small pony. Great for the public to access them but not healthy for such large animals who should have been in paddocks.
There is a Cafe there which we didn't visit. You can by small bags of food pellets for the animals, but we took a large bag of carrots for the big animals and some peanuts in shells for the birds, and the animals loved them. We probably spent about the same amount as we would have on their bagged pellets, but got far better value buying the fresh food. The animals aren't interested in you if you don't have food.
Its a great place for families, but there are quite a few hazards with the river and ponds (never mind the animals!) so children need to be well supervised.
Leah Cameron — Google review
Exceptional! This place is incredible! Great drive out through dense bush and running streams. The picturesque idealic setting was mesmerizing. The park is well kept and immaculately presented. Cafe was great and served up good coffee and beef stew. Our two young kids had a ball of a time, so much to see and explore. The tractor ride was a nice and fun addition. We picked the perfect day to visit, bluebird day with little to no wind. If anything they could do with some outdoor gas heaters around the outside Cafe which would top it off as the place got cold when the sun went over the hills in the afternoon. The cafe spacing does overflow to the outside arrangment when busy which did make it a cold wait for our meal outside. Otherwise an awesome place which I totally recommend.
Paul Glucina — Google review
Great place to get in touch with animals, we had a great time here, and we were lucky to be here in Spring with all the Baby goats and lamb!
The only downside was the wifi login page was difficult to use due to its colouring and the receptionist was a bit grumpy 🤣

What an awesome beautiful place to have in Wellington to take kids, it was really nice to walk around and see all different farm animals they have and all the birds as well. The trout was cool to see so up close swimming around, they also have a awesome horse here. The Tractor ride was great ride it added some fun for the kids. also think the price of getting in is very fair, I know some people think it’s bit high but think how much it must cost look after all the animals here, the cafe here has very friendly staff that gives very good service, food is good and they sell beer and wine.

Fabulous, took our grandsons and they loved it. Animals in excellent conditions all well looked after, loved every part of it. The old town was great. The food was very good and well priced. Really felt we got great value for money. Doesn't have a shop, which is a good thing.
Mark Hay — Google review
A fun time for the little ones. It's well maintained, and generally clean. A pretty place for a stroll, and the tracker rides are a bonus. However some of the animals look like they could use some extra love. It's also very expensive for entry, and on a busy day you're limited to one food bag (which can be a pickle with multiple young kids).
Mixed bag, but we tend to go once or twice a year.

The best-kept secret in Wellington! Perfect for all ages. We were the last people to enter there on a beautiful sunny afternoon. A great place in the middle of nowhere. You wouldn’t find even a small shop anywhere near the place.
It’s a good place especially for the kids to come and watch the birds and animals in the wild life reserve.
The best thing is that we can go touch and feed the animals like deer, sheep, peacock and other birds.
A great place to pack food and snacks and have a small picnic with friends and family.

My daughter had a lovely birthday party at Staglands over the weekend- super easy with the party food, loot bags, entry, and animal food all included in the package (plus the guests all got free admission passes to visit again). The kids loved the animals, especially Jock the horse, the friendly little calf, and the extra cuddly sheep in the deer enclosure. It was raining, but there was still plenty of fun to be had! The tractor ride was a highlight. The staff were great, and all the party guests had a wonderful time. Such a beautiful reserve. Highly recommend for kids parties.

The Southward Car Museum is home to a vast collection of vintage cars and motorcycles, including Bugattis, Bentleys, and other notable vehicles. Due to the pandemic, there were fewer visitors when I went, which allowed me to explore at my leisure. The museum staff were friendly and helpful. While the selection of food at the cafe was limited due to low foot traffic, there are still plenty of treasures to be discovered in the basement and throughout the three-hour visit recommended for a comprehensive experience.
Pretty much had the place to myself thanks mostly to the pandemic. Massive selection of vintage cars and bikes displayed. Recommend allowing a go couple of hours as so much to take in. Was disappointed with selection of food on offer at the café but probably due to lack of foot traffic. Staff were very friendly and helpful ✅ also don’t forget to check out the vehicles down in the basement…

Some absolute gems to be seen. Amazing collection. There are cars in here that most people NEVER see in their entire lifetime. To be fair, I've only posted general photos of the collection. These classic cars need to be seen in person.

Huge collection of cars from all around the world and across time. From Japanese legends of the 90s to the futuristic vision of the Swinging 20s. Also includes a collection of motorcycles and bikes. Each display has an accompanying plaque that gives info on the history and facts of the car model, and/or the history of the particular one on display. Could spend all day reading if I wanted to! Best museum of vintage cars, motorcycles, boats, and Aircrafts. We enjoyed the place very well. We went through the history of vehicles. Every item is described very well on their description boards. If there are minors, it will be a good experience for them. And there is a waiting lounge, toilet, and cafes with snacks and coffee. And wide parking space. And there is an entry fee. For the family, they charged 47$. Recommended place.

This is an amazing display of vintage cars, motorbikes, and other memorabilia. I have been to the Mercedes and Porsche car museums in Stuttgart, and this is equally as good as those. You will easily spend a couple of hours meandering through the perfectly presented displays admiring the cars of your youth. If you're old enough, you may even spot your first few cars. I can't wait to go again, three floors are too much to cover properly in one visit. It's just simply a fantastic venue, a must to go and see. You might be surprised by what else they do to.

What a gem! It's small and off the beaten track, so I'm so glad my accommodation had brochures. I reserved for the native bird close encounter online that night and was greeted by name when I arrived a bit after opening time the following day. It hadn't been clear what time the tour would start, but that worked out OK, as I had time to view the closer-in exhibits before it started at 11:00. Robyn took our small group (just six of us) through three aviaries and we got to see kākāriki, one kākā, blue ducks, and one kea up close and personal. As a parrot lover, I was in heaven and I felt it was well worth the extra price, especially as it goes to a good cause. Afterwards, I had a walk around the reserve, which took about half an hour. There are wide, well-maintained paths, with only the trail to the lookout handicapped-inaccessible. I saw heaps of birds: a silvereye, many tūī, kererū, and a fantail just as I was leaving.
Just to add a comment to explain my wait to get in: a large family group was ahead of me and it sounded like they were attempting to redeem a credit. Anyway, that was what slowed my entry, but otherwise the place was uncrowded and my own entry (I had prepaid) was uncomplicated.

Wonderful spot for seeing NZ birds and a Kiwi exhibit experience as well.
Terrific staff!! Truly friendly, knowledgeable and just plain wonderful.
Highly recommend visiting here and spending some time with the 'winged' locals!

Lots to find and see. Safe environment and clear clean paths and walkways. Duck feeding for the kids, friendly knowledgeable staff.
Stayed the night and got to free roam. Lots of lovely birds to find and hear.

An amazing sympathetically done nature reserve. The animals are rescued and whilst there aren't too many in cages the surrounding wild life is astounding. Be sure to do the larger bush walk as the flora and fauna are fantastic. A wonderful place to spend some relax time or bring your family for an educational day out.

We visited Nga Manu on Easter weekend, they put on a rock hunt for the kids which we all really enjoyed. They also had face painting, lawn games and a bbq going for the weekend too. We enjoyed it alot, did lots of exploring, i had no idea they had so many animals and birds there to see! Next time we may just take a picnic and enjoy the surroundings. Beautiful, will definitely be back.

This place is well worth a visit! An extremely affordable family day out - half the price of the zoo, Staglands, Zealandia... Bring a packed lunch and have a picnic! The kids absolutely loved it when a bird landed on my shoulder! The staff are friendly and helpful too!

This was a low key, relaxing place for a hour or two. The ducks are persistent 😂. Kiwis were not visible for us but we saw eel feeding, tuatara and other lizards.

Lovely setting, very well presented. Great to see so many tuatara. The ducks were super friendly, loved to eat out of my hand and some enjoyed a cuddle to boot.

An excellent facility, with so much for kids of all ages.
A train ride on weekends. All sorts of play equipment, a great flying fox, an obstacle course, excellent toilets, and an indoor dining/kitchen area offering boiling water, a microwave and sink.
My 8 year old played happily for over an hour!

Great facilities. Great play ground. Not the first time I had been there. Great location too with good parking. Last time there, I ran in to some young people scaring a couple of elderly people who were there to use the lavatory
I need to pick up after themselves in the dog area. In fact it was disappointing and disgusting and I couldn’t bear to let my dog stay in their for longer than I did.

This park is great and 1 of the best I have been to over NZ. Caters for all ages and great to see a swing for wheelchairs and catering for the not as mobile children. And is kept well maintained and clean. Clean toilets and has change areas for children. 👍 to the council for a great park for everyone. More councils need parks like this.

It's awesome, you can see that this Park is the reason so many of the newer parks, have what they do.
It's like the Parent playground.
Lots to do.

A really great park! Has lots of facilities that caters for all. It's got a dog exercise area for the four-legged. The playground has different segments and each caters to a difference age group.
It even has an indoor picnic area (an indoor room for people to stop and have a meal) which contains a microwave to hest your food!
Bathrooms are great too, as it caters for families. There's a family bathroom that has a baby change table.
No wonder we always stop by this park whenever we drive past Levin!

The biggest public playground we have ever seen!!! 😍
The highlight for me was the colorful rainbow-themed equipment which added a fun and cheerful touch to the entire area.
The playground was well-maintained and had a variety of equipment suitable for children of different ages. even it has a workout area for adults and a dog's playground too.
Overall, I would highly recommend this playground to anyone looking for a fun and inclusive activity. It's a great spot for families and friends to spend some quality time together in a vibrant and playful environment.

Sadly I have never been into the park with or as a child but I do look at with envy. It looks like kids would have a fantastic time there.
What I can confirm is that the toilets are always clean & have a feeling of safety & that is why I stop at this park, when on my travels.
There is plenty of parking & lovely gardens. Everything is maintained to a high level. If you have a dog there is also a small area to let your dog off for a toilet break. I really appreciate this space offering facilities for everyone & how clean it is.

Amazing playground that we stopped off at on the way to Auckland. There’s a dog park, picnic tables, shade and sunny areas. There are different areas for smaller as well as bigger kids. If you read ‘adventure park’ you might think there’s a fee ->> it’s a free, public playground! Yeah! Definitively recommend!
Sabine Plugers — Google review
Awesome park for both kids and adults. So many different options. Best park and playground in Levin. The adventure park has multiple playgrounds, basketball court, beach volleyball, slides, flying fox, spider web, multiple swinging sets, big kids playground and little kids playground, wooden train, skate park, sandpit, disability/wheelchair swing and even a little train that you can ride for free on sunny days. Theres public toilets and a room to eat and relax in. Oh and theres a dog rest area and play course! This park has everything. Would recommend.
Can’t miss this classic brewery if you’re in the area! The food is great and the brewery tour is everything you want it to be. Nice garden to walk around with games to play and fun decor in general. If you have the kids with you maybe skip the tour but lots of space for them to run around outside while you’re having a pint.
The store is pretty pricey but has some unique stuff.

Exceptionally dog unfriendly place. Very disappointed to be here. Couldn't enjoy my drink and stay here. If you have a dog you have to stay on the parking lot. Tables looked disgusting, like never been wiped, the floor is also dirty, so you don't want to stay outside and for sure you don't want to leave your dog there alone.

Top spot that is nestled away between Woodville and Pahiatua. We've driven past this spot so many times and finally decided to stop in, a great Eggs Benedict with a morning beer... We will definitely be back and spend more time exploring the grounds and walking through the museum.

Tl;dr: buy the Brewery Tour just for the added benefits, but skip the actual tour itself, that's not worth your time.
Full review:
Since they do not tell you upfront, I'll do: be warned the brewery itself is actually closed down. The Brewery Tour is a sad display of faded glory. Not a single drop of beer is still being brewed here these days. Not in the beautiful (but run down and sadly decaying) classic TUI tower (- fair enough, that was to be expected), but also not in the massive hall that was built next to it, no not even in the little micro brewery attached to it. "Closed during COVID" and not reopened since. Whatever the reason, it makes the whole tour just a boring recollection of "Back in days..."- and "Here used to be..."-stories. Inside the micro brewery they'll have you take a look at some dust covered kettles and tanks, while the guide points at a poster that explains how beer is brewed. Wikipedia does a better job. This is not why you go on brewery tour. It lacks the distinctive smell, the rumbling and buzzing of machines and brewers, and actually seeing with your own eyes what magic it takes to turn just a bunch of plants, water and yeast into the golden foamy goodness we all so yearn for. Save your time and money for a brewery that's still actually up and running and brewing.
HOWEVER: for the $25 that the so-called tour sets you back, you do get a bunch of extras which in the end luckily made us feel like we weren't ripped off. First you get a big glass of beer in their onsite pub, plus another free beer in one of their partner pubs dotted across the country (just don't lose the voucher). That alone probably breaks you even. But then you'll also get a free beer glass, and 10% discount on buying beer and/or a shirt/sweater from the store. If you're not planning on redeeming any of these, don't do the tour. If you are, buy the ticket and skip the tour, or go and be prepared to be disappointed, or hope they've improved it.
Victor Luijk — Google review
Whilst the brewery tour is a bit short, it's an incredibly interesting and well set out place to visit and learn the history of.
The bar is a great place to spend the afternoon and enjoy a great range of different beers on tap, with freakin' delicious and freshly cooked lunch served directly to your table.
For the international traveller, I highly recommend giving the brewery a visit, even if it's just to add something fresh and enjoyable to your list of activities.

Great restaurant food, loved my Eggs Benedict & bacon.
I thought brewery tour was a little overpriced considering we can't climb the tower. Suggest $20-$22 rather than $25. Glad it included an excellent cider and Tui beer glass.... awesome for summer smoothies !.
Great customer service and friendly staff. Recommended :D

We went in for a lunch and the food was disappointing. Our fries was half cooked ($10), the pulled pork pizza ($25) was probably worse than a supermarket frozen pizza. Hardly any toppings with a flat base and swimming in bbq sauce. One of the worst pizza I ever had. The only good thing was the beer we tried that's why I give three stars. Without the beer is only one star.
$25 for the animals, $30 if you include the glow worm cave. A fantastic experience, the staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and it's a great chance to see native NZ owls up close. Absolutely worth the visit!

Fabulous service, wonderful people and very interesting facts and stories on the tour. Recommend!
Large park with rose gardens, BBQs, aviaries & a paddling pool, plus a cafe & miniature railway.
I love the esplanade.
It’s the best to run the kids out of energy, grab a little ice cream, let them splash in the paddling pool, and check out some gorgeous roses too. We often walk the tracks, and find or drop some “palmy rocks”
The little train is a family favourite for the kids. My only gripe is toilets are pretty far spread out for the littles, but there is still plenty sprinkled around.

What a great park for the local area! My girlfriend and I first visited the river, which was spectacular, we then walked through the native bush walk until we popped put near the bird sanctuary. We were amazed by the greenhouse and then walked through the bird sanctuary. We made our way back out of the park through the enormous kids' playground. Better yet, the whole experience is free of charge, and the park is meticulously maintained.

First time to Foxton and we were not aware of the Windmill.
This Dutch replica Windmill is worth the time to visit and learn of the mechanisms. A family operated Windmill. The visit to the top and see the mechanisms cost $3 per person or $10 for family of 4.
Dexter Britto — Google review
Tons of good Dutch food and household items. Some items were a little on the pricier side but all of it is authentically Dutch so I would imagine its quite a feat to get it all shipped. Paid the extra little bit to tour the upstairs area. Very interesting to see and love that they provided a booklet with information. Well worth it!

De Molen (windmill) is a fully functioning replica of a traditional Dutch windmill built in Foxton in 2002. Climb the stairs halfway to the top for a unique experience. Try playing some traditional Dutch castle games made out of wood and enjoy the view in every direction from the second floor balcony. We were delighted to be inside when the windmill started up and could watch the intricate cogs and pulleys working on several levels. We bought some flour milled there just this week to make our own bread at home. Highly recommended as a place to visit and explore when you’re in Foxton.

The only fully working windmill of it's type in the southern hemisphere. Built mostly from locally sourced timber and very earthquake proof. We were welcomed by friendly staff and volunteers then we were taken on an informative tour up three flights of stairs to see how it all worked including onto the railed balcony. Where you could really appreciate the power of the wind turning the sails. There is a small shop selling goodies from the Netherlands and the flour ground by the windmill

Hands down the best gluten free and dairy free orange and almond cake I’ve ever had. Moist, orangy and with the bitey texture of slivered almonds. Had it passing through going to and from the South Island. Not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that they are 400+ km from where I live, but will definitely be back next time we are near Foxton.

Very well presented to the public.. $3 charge for adults to climb up those steep ladders.. well worth the price when you go up.. Awesome engineering to use Wind power into Mechanical Energy and use it to make wheat powder.. Visited this place few years ago and it wasn't open to public.. But now I highly recommend everyone passing FOXTON to visit De Melon WindMill..

Lovely staff who explained the life of the working windmill from 2000 to now. For $3 you can go up and see the amazing woodwork for all of the working parts. They sell the flour they mill along with a large range of Dutch and German products. Definitely worth the $3.

Because we saw a windmill in foxton we spent a homeschool day learning about them.
Then took the girls and paid to go upstairs. Really cool! Plus the Miller was working and he took a lot of extra time to explain each step in the process and show the girls 🙌 (some was hands on). Hugely appreciated and a great learning experience.

One of my favourite stops in New Zealand. Of course I had to stop on my drive! I went to look upstairs on the Flour mill for just $3 what a cool opportunity and of course I had to support the store downstairs aswell and try the foxton fizz. The New Zealand Rugby Museum is a fantastic facility that boasts an extensive collection of historical rugby artifacts. In addition to its research library, the museum features an interactive area where visitors can test their rugby skills. The displays range from a 1905 All Blacks jersey to modern-day equipment such as scrum machines and whistles used during Rugby World Cup matches. The knowledgeable staff members are happy to discuss the history of the All Blacks and answer questions about their chances in upcoming tournaments.
Today I listened to a talk on the history of the Museum by Stephen Berg. The buildings, the founders, the significance of the objects in the Museum to tell the stories of the game. I was able to handle a replica of the first "All Blacks" team jersey. Currently there is an exhibition on Women's rugby which took months to research. A proud history of NZs national game is right here in Palmerston North
Janet Doyle — Google review
A pleasantly laid out circular amble through NZ rugby history. Early exhibits reveal the raw toughness of the founding game and the memorabilia is interesting. The displays seem to devolve in quality as the years progress, giving way to gay colours and exposing the softening changes that has seen rugby deteriorate as a male sport. Worth a one off visit.

Te Manawa is a cultural center that has been open since 1971, combining a museum and art gallery to create an immersive experience. The venue offers contemporary exhibits that showcase the intersection of science, history, and art. With a strong focus on Maori culture and social history, visitors can learn about native animals, wetlands and enjoy interactive displays about the Manawatu River. The gallery features rotating exhibits while children can enjoy an interactive play area.

The museum looks deceptively small from the front, but is cleverly designed where one room leads to another, and so on, so it's kind of "long". Of course, like many museums elsewhere where the nation is divided, to some extent, between an original indigenous population and European colonisers, the museums are organised from a certain dominant perspective, history of the nation is seen from a certain skewed lens. Having said that, this museum by itself was fascinating, because the country itself is. More than its people it's the flora and fauna that attracts attention, and here the museum has done an excellent job! As an extra bonus we managed to catch a fab show of the celebrated Maori artist Sandy Adsett.

A hitherto unknown gem in Whanganui, this is the only public elevator built inside a hill in the world. 24 or so stories down to the bottom. Then there's the 200m+ long tunnel that leads to the rivers edge. Opened for the first time in 1919, both the elevator and tunnel are beautifully preserved and maintained.
It's well worth a look!

Wonderful experience. It is 2 dollars each way for adults, you can pay by cash or EFTPOS. 4 people at a time, or 5 for slims 😂
There are many parking on top of the hill or plenty on-road parking next to the War Memorial Tower. Or you can park at the bottom of the hill, climb the very steep stairs to the top and take the elevator down. The parking at the bottom has 60mins and 120mins time limits. The tunnel at the bottom is really good, the Neon lights changing colours.
Highly recommend it.

Loved this place! Only 2 such lights in the whole wide world. One in Portugal and another one is this one!
Walk through the tunnel, it is painted white, well lit and best of all echoes loudly. Me and my child enjoyed making different sounds while walking through the tunnel.
The lift is at the end of the tunnel. Ring the bell, a friendly lift man will bring the lift to bottom of the hill.
During Jan 2023, they were running half price on the fares. It was just a dollar for an adult and 50c for kids. How amazing!
I suppose many school kids still use this lift especially to carry their bicycles.
Beautiful views at the top of the hill. Anzac tower 🗼 which 300 m tall. We were almost 1000m above sea level at the top of the tower. Stunning views and beautiful experience!
Kudos the team who are running this. This is a must visit!

What a wonderful piece of history and a great feat of engineering. Emma was the guide for the elevator and she was knowledgable and friendly. Great views from the top. If you have the energy to ascend 175 steep steps then you will get to the top of the tower and I imagine the views will be spectacular. They were pretty good from the smaller platform above the elevator.
Durie Hill is a lovely suburb.

Must do when you are in Wanganui. The tunnel ->elevator-> tower is such a fun outing to do with kids (or any age). Great view from the top looking over Wanganui and on good days can even spot Mt Taranaki..

The team at the iSite in Whanganui is amazing! Kevin, Saskia, and especially Keri, are so welcoming and really go above and beyond to make your visit to the Whanganui region special. When we told Keri we wanted to do some things off the beaten path, she found us a bone carving class and a spot to try some local Māori gin. Even if you don’t need trip planning, stop in and see them - they are great!

Not too difficult to find, particularly if you followed the signs from the highway. There is an entrance on the road and another around the back by the river.

Situated conveniently right beside the river (that has a riverside board walk for cycling & walking on, plenty of seating, recycling rubbish containers & even a drinking water station.
Really helpful staff, plenty of pamphlets about various activities & road maps.
An awesome to scale 3D model of Taranaki on a large table that you can walk around and visually see distances between places.
There are public toilets inside the building and bicycle stands outside.
Plenty of free 1hour parking.
Mud Ducks café adjoins the Visitor centre.

Recently, i walked into your lovely premises to use the toilet. I walked into the mens toilets only for the cleaning lady to tell me, quite firmly, i wasn't allowed to use the toilet as she was cleaning and that i should go down the street to use the toilet (which i did, but it looked like it was closed). I found her to be a little rude, like she was reprimanding me for even considering to use the toilet. There was NO sign saying i couldn't use the toilet - only a "caution - wet floor" sign. How was I meant to know i couldn't use it? It would not hurt if she was nicer in her approach next time. I strongly suggest you have some sign telling people the toilet cannot be used whilst it is being cleaned if it saves someone else from having their heads bitten off by this lady next time. I'll probably never use these toilet facilities (by far the nicest in town) again :(.

So pleased we visited the iSite. The very pleasant Molly gave us excellent information & recommendations, allowing us to get the most from our time in Whanganui. (We enjoyed the honey cured salmon too Molly.) Great the site is centrally located, so easy to find or stumble across.

Stay away from this region. Spend your tourist dollars elsewhere. As the Mayor of Whanganui has requested "look, actually we'd prefer you to stay home"

Rude and initially unhelpful. When asked, staff didn't want to unlock the accessibility door to cafe, instead telling me to go down the steps with my dual buggy. Not welcoming.

Such an incredible resource for our community in the perfect location! The team always go above and beyond every-time and I couldn’t be more thankful for their ongoing support. You don’t just have to be a visitor to value this service, as a local I couldn't think of life without them. In the heart of Whanganui, capturing incidental foot traffic via the bus terminal and Saturday markets and purposeful foot traffic for their incredible knowledge and experience.

I wish to thank the i site in Whanganui. Two years ago the staff tried to quickly organise a Mail van trip up the Whanganui River for us. Although it was booked out their enthusiasm bought me back two years later and I was able to do the trip today. The trip with Tracy lived up to and indeed exceeded my expectations.
Tracy is a wonderful ambassador for this part of the country and the i site enabled me to discover this area and will certainly bring me back.
Thanks again for your professionalism i site Whanganui.

good info about Whanganui , brilliant asset for the city. Perfect position with cafe, galleries, buses and beautiful river right there. Parking and short stroll to city .
Very fond memories from my childhood of this park... and I was not disappointed some 50 years later. Still plenty of ducks and a couple of large swans. A fun encounter as they came out of the lake wanting food.
The Winter Garden was beautiful... and loved the Christmas theming.

Virginia Lake is an excellent place to wind down, whether that be a walk around the lake, or a stop at the nearby coffee shop further up the bank. Great team, brilliant experience and a lifetime of memories. My partner and I did the 3 day freedom hire. Lots of storages was provided; 1 large barrel each, 1 small barrel each, a massive dry bag for tent / day bag etc and a black strong box for valuables. Lots of info as you are are booking so felt very prepared.

My friends and I (a group of 5) had an amazing time on our 4 day canoe trip! It was a once in a lifetime type of experience. The canoes and other gear from Whanganui River Canoes was excellent, and the pick up and drop off service (with snacks at the end) was excellent. My only critique would be to print out the pictures for the briefing on a larger piece of paper - trying to squint at the tiny pictures on an A4 sheet was very difficult. Other wise, we had a wonderful time! Thank you again.

A fantastic little company that does the little extra for their customers! They take safety very seriously and provide you with excellent instructions and gear!
This makes you feel safe and prepared to get out on the river on your own!
And what's even more important; after seeing the other operators in action around the river, we felt that we had chosen the best one!
Can also recommend their campsite that feels very fresh! Encourage you to get one of their cabins ahead of a canoeing trip even if you plan on sleep in tent along the river! They are comfortable and makes the morning before departure so much easier!
An easy five star!

Excellent hire company! My partner and I hired a canoe for 3 days for a freedom tour on the river. We were given a detailed video guide the day before and tips about how to paddle the canoe effectively and safely. Ben and Rebecca were very helpful, informative and accomodating, plus the snacks and drinks upon our return were very welcomed and a nice touch! :)

We had booked 3 days on the river, but unusually heavy rainfall had prevented us from embarking on our trip on the first day. As it was not possible to postpone it, the staff were very helpful and flexible in sorting us out a 2 day trip, whereby we got picked up by a jet boat halfway along. As we lost our bookings in the DOC huts, the staff lended us tents and inflatable mattresses free of charge to stay at the campsites instead.
Despite the stress they were under from over 2 weeks of lost business caused by the high water levels, they acted very friendly and professional in arranging an alternative trip format for us.
We had a great time on the river, they got us back to the campsite at the end with no delays.

Excellent place. We had a group that stayed in their cabins and did the 4 day canoe trip. Everything is extremely well run and organized. I highly recommend it. The cabins are clean, the bathrooms and showers are awesome and there is also a laundry area. Lots of short walks around the area from the cabins. The canoe trips are extremely well run and organized, it was extremely impressive. You watch a video, learn about the trip, then get bags and barrels to put your stuff in. They take you to the river. You get your canoes and paddles, lifejackets, emergency beacon. You have fun on the river and they pick you up at the end of your journey and take you back. You get to keep your car at their place. And they even give you some drinks and snacks when you get back, which was a welcome surprise bonus. I highly recommend the Whanganui River Canoes
Pamela New Zealand — Google review
Great service and canoes from whanaganui river canoes. We had comments from other paddlers on the river at how well the canoes were set up compared to the ones they had hired from another company like having straps attached to the canoes make it way easier loading and unloading every time compared to the bits of rope they were given to tie their barrels in that they had to tie and untie every time.
Great all around.
What an awesome day out! Kind and welcoming staff who ran the tour with perfect mix of professionalism and easy - going attitude . Lovely gentle walk to Bridge and cool chat with staff once there about history of the area! Kids LOVED the spins on the boat and we all can’t wait to come back for camping at the lodge and some canoeing 😀

We did Jet Boat tour with Ben. Fantastic experience. Ben a true local who gave us so much interesting history on the area , topped off great day by doing jet boat spins which the kids loved. Biscuits, hot drinks were so appreciated too. Recommend taking extra warm wind proof clothing even if weather forecast good.
Rosie Torbit — Google review
This was a great experience and I was very glad I went. However, if you're going, you need to be aware of suitable clothing to take on the Jetboat. Friends booked this trip and included me, and as far as I am aware, they were not given any such information. When you've driven the 60 odd ks from Whanganui to get to Pipiriki you can't just pop home to get a warm jumper.
I would suggest that you take something really warm, and if possible, waterproof . A cap (or a hooded jacket) that will safely stay glued to your head is a good idea, as are sunglasses. When you're speeding up the river at 60 kph, the wind can really hurt your eyes and ears. All of this "extra" gear can be left in the boat as you walk through the beautiful bush to the bridge. It's a great trip; a stunningly beautiful Awa and the guide had lots of interesting info. Do it... it's well worth it.

If you are new to canoeing or canoeing through rapids, I do *not* recommend booking one of their tours that involves canoeing.
We booked a jet boat tour to the Bridge to Nowhere, from where we went canoeing to the Lodge. After staying the night, we went canoeing back to Pipiriki. When we started our first canoeing trip, we expected to receive a safety briefing or any information - but we didn't. We did not get any explanation on the canoes or paddling whatsoever. No explanation on how to safely board and exit the canoe, how to tie it up, how to tackle the rapids, etc. Of course, we asked all of those questions, but we didn't get clear answers. The only advice for the rapids was "just keep paddling", which did not feel helpful at all. This lack of information caused me to become more nervous about the rapids. The next morning, we had to paddle through many rapids. Again, we were expecting to get a safety briefing, but got none (and yes, again we asked questions, but the answers weren't very helpful and we gave up). On our jet boat tour on the first day, they did shortly stop at a few rapids to point out some safe ways. However, it was hard to hear (and remember) all the details with all the noise of the river and boat, and when you come from the other side and another perspective (from a canoe), it is basically impossible to recognise what rapid it is and what the best way through it would be. It would be much more helpful to have a map of pictures in the canoe, taken from the right perspective, showing how to safely navigate through them and pointing out things to recognise. We eventually managed the rapids, but I didn't feel very comfortable on the journey (also literally, as the canoe was not very comfy).
But to state the positives: the jet boat tour to the bridge was nice, the staff was very friendly, and the lodge was comfortable. We loved our stay there, it was an amazing place. So if you are looking to just do a jet boat tour, or staying at their lodge, or you're experienced at canoeing, I *would* recommend them.

Joe is highly rude to anyone canoeing the river. We witnessed him refuse to slow down, even when those canoes had children in them, even going out of his way to get close to them & visibly enjoying scaring them. We witnessed every other jet boat slow down and couldn’t understand his attitude. Only way to describe it is he’s just a horrible human being

We (a group of 6) just returned from an awesome weekend exploring the 'Valley of broken dreams' - It was an awesome mountain bike ride (not too tricky) complete with a jet boat ride and canoeing experience. Our crew had an absolute blast. Huts were comfortable, cooking facilities well equipped and a hot shower an absolute surprise at the end of a big day biking. It was also nice to pop up to the lodge for a GnT and to hang with Blacky the cat. Mandy and Joe were very hospitable and were great to have a laugh with. Go and check it out for yourself!

Our family did the One Dayer trip. Thomas was a great tour guide, entertaining and informative. The jet boat trip, the hike, and the canoe portion were just perfect for our kids ages 7-12 (I am grateful that they gave each parent a kayak paddle, since our kids weren't the most helpful with their canoe paddling). The kids loved feeding the leftover biscuits to the eels. I'd highly recommend this trip to anyone - adults on their own or ones traveling with kids.

This is a fantastic trip, and we'll worth the money - in fact I think it's a bargain! Five of us did this on Boxing Day and despite the weather being iffy, the tour went ahead and we had the best time. Light showers on the boat ride up, and a spell of heavy showers at the start of walk and ride back down river, however the sun was out full blast at the bridge for some yarns and lunch. Ken our guide was brilliant, we did some spins on the way back down. Tea, coffee, & biscuits were provided at the bridge as well. What we as a group loved is how the owners of the company have a personal special connection to the river & land we were on. Ken grew up in a house way up river and was able to point that out and talk a little about how it was growing up there - very different to most of us. If you want a unique & authentic adventure, this is the place to look!

A great experience on the Whanganui River up to The Bridge to No Where. Our jet boat pilot and guide,Thomas, made the day trip memorable for all the right reasons.
Weaving both personal, family as well as tribal histories with the new comers who made a life on the Whanganui River both before the arrival of the settlers and on into modern history of New Zealand.
The added bonus was the provision of tea and coffee along with biscuits after a 40 minute walk through regeneration native bush along with bird life, wild pig and goats were seen.

I haven't visited here for 12 years. We took our grandson, aged 14. He loved it. It was so different, and interesting. One day isn't long enough to take it all in. The story of Taranaki. So well done. The dioramas had so much detail. It is Taranaki's best kept secret. It stands up well against anything in Europe. The rain was no problem, as virtually everything is indoors!

The best museum we have been to! It was interactive and ingenious! We had the Traders and Whalers which includes boat ride, train to the bush and farm power hall were very exciting with realistic human size displays of Maori culture and Pakeha early settlers in Taranaki. Recounts the history of the area from the arrival of the Europeans to the automobile via scaled dioramas, life size models, bush train and boat. Definitely a must place to visit and you need to allow at least 5-6 hours to see everything. Photos limited as most areas have copyright art.

I wonderful place to spent some time. There is a cafe on site, with decent coffee and cabinet food. There are heaps to see, so make sure you have time. A great selection of historic farm vehicles and tools and some army vehicles, but the models are the best. Each scene so detailed, it's definately a must see.

Fun for the whole family! Double check if they are open as it is different days for different seasons. The bush train only runs certain Sundays too, so if you want to ride, be sure to check!
We went through the museum and were amazed at the incredible detail put into both small and large models. Such a great range of things to see. Learn some NZ history, explore relics of the past, see how water wheels powered tools, and some great Taranaki history!
Also available is the Whalers and Traders part of the museum which includes an indoor boat ride. We didn't see this part, but are sure it is just as excellent!
Badger's Cafe rounds off Tawhiti, with good food and some scenes from the Wind in the Willows for any avid fan!
Ample parking and clean toilets! Shady spot for a picnic too!

Fascinating place! So much interesting local history to learn and the dioramas are amazing. I particularly found the Maori wars, the Adventures of Kimble Bent, and the butcher shop a real eye opener as I’ve visited several museums during my visit around New Zealand and none were as visual and detailed as this or shared such perspectives. Can’t believe Tawhiti Museum was all Nigels creation and vision (also with the help and support of the local towns people)- we had a chance to meet him in the gift shop and had a nice chat about his displays. You will need a few hours of exploration here as it’s very educational for young and old! We didn’t have time to take the rides but if you can, consider atleast one ride during your visit. Also, Mr Badger’s Cafe is a nice spot to pop in and enjoy some homemade snacks, coffee and tea out in the garden :) - the little Wind in the Willows dioramas are adorable!

So much history. Good stories of local people. Nice souvenir shop and little bush railway. Place is very dusty however so take antihistamines if you're affected by that.

Awesome museum! The dioramas are outstanding! They are so intricately made!
Will try the boat ride tour soon

The miniature sculptures are true masterpieces with so much of details. The boat ride is fun. So many articulate details on farming industry. Kids absolutely loved the place.

Mind-boggling!
Amazing!
Truly a wonderful pleasure to have visited this beautiful place.
Nigel Ogle is a man of considerable talent and it is on display everywhere you look at this unique Museum. Attention to detail is stunning from the larges to the most minute of all his models.
It really does bring history to life in a much more interesting and realistic way than simply reading or hearing of it. The other amazing feature is that it just goes on and on and.....on. So much to see. An additional treasure and blessing for me, was the Mr Badger Cafe. Very quaint and cosy. The food and beverages were delicious and the decor is just lovely..."The Wind in the Willows" providing the theme for this beautiful hideaway.
There is only one thing I could find to be sorry about...the fact that I live so far away and can't come more often.
Congratulations, Mr Ogle and all your friendly staff. A really beautiful place and I hope I will be making it back down that way again very soon.

This Glockenspiel Clock Tower has public bathrooms at the bottom of it. The tower itself is spectacular. Pity I could not find Stratford Clock Tower to place this under.

Situated behind the Glockenspiel. There are six of them and kept quite clean. An ideal spot to take a break since parking and eating places are within a stone's throw.

Opunake Beach Holiday Park : Opunake Accommodation
Many thanks to Opunake Beach Holiday Park....a well appointed two bedroom Bach which can sleep seven. Nice large shower and good availability of heating and cooling. Very tidy grounds and friendly people. Many thanks and we'll be back for sure.

The location and surroundings are obviously, amazing. The actual caravan grounds, their well kept, excellent facilities and lots of options to cook and power equipment. A very, very comfortable stay!

The room was nice when we walked in there a puddle of water on the floor while sitting watching TV you could see the water leaking through the join in the lounge area under the TV. The path up to the unit was just muddy dirt, so it was not good to walk on or try and get in the unit. Apart from the few small things, it is a great location.

What a wee gem to find over Easter weekend. My daughter and son-in-law took me camping. A very picturesque beautiful, and well appointed campsite with the beach at a stone's throw. Immaculately clean and very friendly staff. The town and area were great places to explore. We left with definite plans to return with the whole family and to recommend to our friends.

First class holiday and camping grounds, great kiddies play ground and an incredible beach which is generally very safe as long as you watch the waves and follow the rules and guidelines. There is an extremely strong and efficient surf life saving club, very active during the school holiday period and certain days during February to April when it is suitable weather for swimming. When the Surf Life Savers are on duty, at this time the beach is very safe as long as everyone listens to their advice and swims between the flags as there can be rips on this beach. Surfing depending on the tide and waves is all year round. The camp ground has great facilities, a minor shop but the Opunake township is 3 minutes drive on 10ish minutes walk away and you should pretty much be able to get everything you need for your camping and holiday requirements.

A great place to stay and enjoy the beach life with camp sites and cabins. A good communal kitchen, toilet/shower and laundry areas.Nice beach with a surf life saving club on the beach. Shelley who runs the site was very lovely and very knowledgeable about the area. Opunake township is only minutes up the road with basically everything you may need. Well worth staying at

Great spot. Excellent choice of sites. Shower/ toilet facilities clean & good size. Kitchen facility had everything you needed. Beach was perfect.

A very well-placed campground down on one of the top surf beaches in the region offering a first-class service. The facilities are immaculate, well equipped with everything you would need, plus there's a public kid's playground and paddling pool just meters away. The staff were fantastic, super friendly and always up for a yarn. The powered sites are very spacious.
It's a 10-minute walk into town and backs onto the Opunake Loop walking track to soak up the fantastic views of the coastline and lake.
I'll be back again for sure.

Very nice place and near the beach. Everyone is respectful and amenities were in good condition. Bathrooms smelled kinda foul.
Rooms need a ventilation system as it feels suffocating if the window is not open (it was cold so we opted to not open the window)

We really enjoyed our stay at this campground.
We had a van and didn’t need a powdered site. It was $60 for us (two people).
Showers, toilets, laundry and kitchen were clean and functional.
Staff were friendly and the little shop onsite had most things you need. The little town nearby also has some cool secondhand shops & a nice cafe with great pies.

Taranaki s best beach and very chilled camp ground. If you love authentic NZ , a sheltered campsite, a flat safe surf beach (perfect learning bay and lifeguards) , excellent amenities and a kiwi country town nearby, with all you need, you will love staying in Opunake! Your small.dog is welcome too and the very busy owners make time for you. We will.be back!

Great location & was packed with holidaymakers on Boxing Day, it's a very popular beach & campground. The only negative was the women's public toilet - especially as it's used by so many on a very hot day! Sand everywhere, not much loo paper left & the soap dispenser was empty. But overall, my partner & I enjoyed eating our packed lunch while taking in the sights & sounds. Awesome to see lifeguards patrolling the beach & swimmers staying between the flags, as there's still far too many tragic drownings at sea in NZ every year which are mostly preventable. Stay safe out there! 🏊♀️🏖🌊🦺🤗

Excellent holiday park. Large spacious facilities, lots of showers and toilets with plenty of room.
There was plenty of room on our powered site for our caravan annex a double swag and our ute.
Mt. Taranaki is a majestic, 2518m volcanic peak located in New Zealand that offers various trekking routes and breathtaking views from all directions. The surrounding areas are also rich with protected forest reserves, pools of water, and expansive views of the mountain from far away. It is a must-see attraction on the North Island that is highly recommended to visit even for just a day trip to witness this natural wonder.
Certainly one of the most challenging tracks in NZ. We started at 6am and finished at 4pm, a total of 10 hours. We could have finished earlier, but resting is also an important aspect to remember and we took it seriously. So we took long breaks to rest and reassess. It was already icy in the top and we had to walk extra carefully. On the way down, climbing down the big rocks was not the worse, I think having to cross the sliding terrain was more tiring. Next time, we should go between January and February to avoid bad weather and cold and start even earlier, around 4am (it would be summer time anyway). The best part was having a chat with my friends and sharing experiences and different points of view. This trail, although difficult, can be done by mostly everyone who has the will and fitness to keep going. I hope to be back and bring my whole family in 2 or 3 years from now.

I climbed in January. Very nice hike. Very step at some areas. The hardest park is just before the lizard. It was snow ath the crater. Amazing views at the summit. I'll do it again
Dani Sanchez — Google review
Best and hardest hike that I ever experienced. 😍
Approximately it took 12-15hours to complete the track. (With breaks) ⏱️
Take enough water and foods.
Recommend to start as early as possible.
I suggest to wear a good hiking boots 🥾 when you guys hike. Good luck for all. 😀

Mount Taranaki is an amazing sight to see in person. You can see the volcano from every direction when you are driving up through the city. The areas around the mountain are amazing as well from the forests to the pools of water, to the expansive views of the mountain from the distance. This was one of my favorite experiences on the north island and I highly recommend even a day trip to the area just to see this wonder!

Mount Taranaki is an incredible place to explore and hike. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a beginner, you'll find something to enjoy on this magnificent mountain.
From the base to the summit, the scenery is breathtaking. The forests are lush and green, with stunning views of the surrounding valleys. As you climb higher, you'll be rewarded with even more spectacular vistas, including panoramic views of the Tasman Sea and the surrounding landscape.
The trails are well-maintained and clearly marked, making it easy to navigate even the more challenging sections. There are plenty of rest stops along the way, where you can catch your breath and take in the views. And if you need a break, there's always a nice spot to sit down and soak in the sights and sounds of nature.
One thing that really stood out to me was the diversity of plant and animal life. From towering trees to colorful wildflowers, there's always something new and interesting to see and learn about. And keep an eye out for the local birdlife, like the Tui and the Kereru.
Overall, Mount Taranaki is an amazing destination that I would highly recommend. Whether you're looking for a challenging hike or a leisurely stroll, there's something for everyone. So pack your hiking boots and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in one of New Zealand's most spectacular natural wonders.

Great hike, quite challenging fitness- and technicality-wise, but well worth it if you get good weather. The view from the top is incredible, and even better at sunrise. Come prepared, it can be well below freezing even in the middle of summer.
Caleb Lloyd — Google review
Very unique hike in that you spend a lot of time climbing/stumbling through rock and ruble. I would not recommend people try this hike unless they are coordinated and fit. The views along the way and from the top are great, but might not be worth suffering through the annoying terrain. I probably wouldn’t do this hike again, but overall glad that I did it.
Derek Sauer — Google review
Amazing summit hike. I would say this is only recommended to people who are fit and experienced with hiking. It’s a tough climb up to the summit. It’s 4 hours of hard work climbing up and then sketchy going down with the scree. Take enough water for the day, there is no resupply and take hiking poles and warm clothes (gloves, hat, waterproof wind jacket) it’s very cold on the top. 100% worth the effort. I would say choose your day wise, take a full sunny day!
Nathalie H — Google review
This Trek was one of the hardest I ever did. The results you get after the summit is not worth it at all. Be fully prepared before you decide to do this Trek. Carry enough water because you won't find any water source in the whole route. You need to have good shoes as well as trekking poles. Heard good things about this Trekking route but that was quite opposite.
Kushal Lamsal — Google review
Too cold so make sure you have warm inners. Cars can only go upto meeting point rest all you have to trek so not good for a family outing. Good for photos 😊

Awesome hike, attempted climbing the summit in Mid Nov. but unfortunately there were still some snowy parts at about 2,100 vertical metres and we didn't go any further because of not being equipped properly.
Some parts are pretty steep but technically easy. Just be careful at the scree field, which is very exhausting.
The first part until the hut is very well maintained. After that comes a steep section with stairs and after that it's just a scree field which is the hardest part of it.
Definitely will come back and attempt it again in the summer.
The landscape is unique and breathtaking. So much to see.
One of the highlights of our NZ trip even if we weren't able to hike all the way up.
Oh and the clouds went by very fast. Weather changes suddenly so be prepared for everything and take your time.
Torben Lux — Google review
It's such a spectacular and great hike of Aotearoa.
Heaps of parking at the visitor center.
Walk starts off fairly easy on a 4x4 gravel road. Once it starts to go uphill, it never stops unfortunately😅 you'll reach the tower where there is a toilet, and then just after that, you'll reach the Tahurangi Lodge. From here, the track goes into a ruff and ruggered pathway going up rocks etc before getting to the start of the steps. Making your way to the top of the stairs then becomes the hardest part of the hike is the scree area it's like sand taking one step up and two back😅 (tip: take gloves) use gloves so you can bear crawl up most of this area as its easier. Once you conquer the scree area, you start to rock climb (again, gloves come in handy) as the rocks/mountain get hot on a sunny day and by this part of the hike you need to use your hands to give the legs a hand😅 once you overcome the climbing the you get to the base of the summit where you walk across snow before walking the last part to the summit where you get 360° of spectacular views and also can see Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe and Tongariro in the distance.

Mount down hill run!! We went a couple of weeks ago, spectacular views! There was a little cloud over one side of the mountain… we walked up to the ski field there was still snow!!! Which was very exciting and fun 🤩 will definitely like to hike to the top in the summer and visit for skiing in the winter ❄️
Ps the clouds closed in the rain starting and so did our legs… remember the weather changes quickly on the mountain.

Mount Taranaki offers breathtaking views that are nothing short of spectacular. The serene reflection of the mountain in nearby bodies of water adds to its charm, creating a perfect mirror image. Hikers and nature enthusiasts will find this a must-visit destination for its awe-inspiring beauty. We started at 3:30 am. from the carpark, it was full of stars and we could even see the milky way. It took us about 2.5 hours to the perfect location to shoot the reflection. There's a hut on the way so everyone could take a rest.

Pukeiti botanical garden is renowned for its varied collection of rhododendrons and offers visitors a chance to explore rainforest trails. The gardens are well-maintained, with excellent walking tracks that wind through the lush greenery. Additionally, there are treehouses designed specifically for children aged between 7-10 years old, complete with exciting activities at each location.
A absolute most beautiful paradise. Many walks and well mapped and modern clean facilities. A MUST SEE for anyone in the region. Even the narrow winding road there was beautiful with three tops forming a tunnel in some.places. Many NZ pegioens to observe also.

Another “must visit” place in Taranaki.
This place has several walks that’s suitable for everyone - 5 minutes stroll to Fitness Trails.
Always check the weather forecast before you visit this great spot.
The cafe located at this place is convenient and they have pretty good menu. However, they close by 4pm during winter.

This garden didn't quite work for us. It is set in some lovely natural bush but then it had the industrial style metal walkway. There was the odd special spot like the waterwheel but the landscaping was very mass style reminiscent of towns roadside fill in for banks and islands. Lots of small plants just recently planted. It has potential and is a good size for a decent walk but for us the garden design is pretty average.

A wonderful spot to explore! We didn't see the half of it, due to small legs but loved what we did see!
Wander down through the bush to see the waterwheel in action.
Take a bag of activities from the wall by the cafe and do the treehouse walk with the kids!
Roam and wander and enjoy the beauty of the bush and gardens.
Enjoy a tasty lunch at the cafe before heading home, or stay overnight in the family hut(book first!).
While most paths are well formed and there is excellent wheelchair access, some of the trekking on the tree house walk is not buggy friendly - you can bypass those short cuts if needed though, just be sure to take a map!
Parking is ample and great toilets!

We visited during the Taranaki Garden Festival and were really impressed. Unfortunately the weather wasn't the best but not a lot you can do about that. We didn't get to see the whole site but there were well formed paths and beautiful scenery with lots of tracks to explore. It is up and down so be prepared for that. Food was available at the cafe but the menu was limited. What we had was perfectly acceptable. I would say that if you are not comfortable driving on twisting, hilly, country roads you might have a problem with the drive there. All the roads were sealed, however and are manageable. For the bird lovers, we did see lot's of Tui and Kereru which was great.
What can I say, this is a great place to stay.
All the stuff for very welcoming and very helpful. The facilities were really good and a very good standard of cleaning.
The shower blocks for men and women were very clean and could cater for a number of people.
There is a well-equipped kitchen with multiple cookers, sinks and worktops though you do need to provide your own cooking utensils. Also a nice selection of gas barbecues that you can use.
We had booked a cabin for two which had a nice veranda with seats outside overlooking the sea.
The beach itself was very nice with fine black sand and a people out surfing and kite surfing when we were there.
Lifeguards were present during the day with swimming recommended between the flags.
A nice location for exploring the local area or even just relaxing on the beach all day.

Amazing town, so relaxing and nice spot for a few nights camping. Just a few suggestions as slightly overpriced for what you are getting for a non powered site relevant to the Kaitake camp site: Kitchen is very small and doesn't have any cooking equipment such as utensils, dishwashing liquid, soap, one kettle ect for the size of the camp and price a few of these supplies would be appreciated. Also one picnic table outside the kitchen meaning alot of people having nowhere to sit as the lower camp site is abit of a walk from the kitchen.

Starting with the bad first.
The shower pressure is very bad and you need to pay 50c for 5min of hot water. But because of the bad pressure, you cannot shower that quickly. The windows are left open during the night as well, so if you shower too late, it is very cold. The first night our heater in the room did not work, but the next morning contacted the office and they brought a spare. The heater in the room is very old and rusted.
Now for the good.
The cabin was very nice and clean. The views are gorgeous. Our 6-year-old enjoyed walking on the beach and playing in the park. The BBQ area was neat and tidy and the BBQ was clean. The Kitchen area is very nice and fully equipped. The office staff were very nice and friendly.

Beautiful beachfront location with lovely walking track and sandy beach. Stayed in powered site in campervan. Super clean facilities. 50c for a 5 min hot shower. Kitchen has a beach view!! Small BBQ and playground area in front of it. Slightly interesting app entry which didn't seem to work well but that was a minor thing. Dog friendly for dogs in off season... not sure about peak season. Quiet in March. LOVED this campground. Office guy super nice.
