We did not received a warm welcome at all, saying that it was pretty hard to see the glaciers with the recent washouts, and not proposing any alternatives to the closed trails.
Furthermore, the lady try to discourage to hike on the most beautiful hike of the area (which I will keep silent as maybe they don't want to send inexperienced trampers) without asking our level of fitness.
Hopefully we did the walk and the view was amazing and the hike not so hard as we took less time than the DOC said.
Instead of saying than the helicopter is the safer (and most profitable obviously) way to see the glacier, they should do what they are here for : advising people according to their experience of the mountain.
To conclude, please stop defending the terrible way of tourism that is Helicopter Tours, as if is was necessity to use choppers to see glaciers which are drastically melting.

I was supposed to join Franz Josef glacier helicopter tour but unfortunately due to the bad weather the tour was cancelled. I had no idea for my day in Franz Josef. The staff in i site was very helpful and nice. She gave me very useful suggestions for dining and indoor activities for example kiwi visit. She even gave me a 2 dollar coupon for kiwi visit. I was totally thankful.

The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, situated just outside Blenheim, showcases New Zealand's involvement in both World War I and II through a variety of vintage aircraft and rare memorabilia. The museum features two permanent exhibits - Knights of the Sky and Dangerous Skies, which offer visitors an immersive experience into the battles that took place during these wars.
This is an astonishing collection of rare aircraft from the first and second world wars.
The aircraft are preserved & maintained to such a high standard that some are even airworthy.
You can actually see the development of aircraft technology and design features through the years.
In addition, there are accounts of pilots on all sides of the conflicts, exhibits of actual uniforms, medals and equipment.
There are staff on hand to give detailed explanations and technical information.
Well worth the entrance fee - highly recommended!

Extraordinary museum!
It is so full of amazing historic planes and their history. Some of them a beautifully placed in a scenery.
There are also halls of other plane memorabilia and trinkets.
Their new WWII displays are truly stunning too!
Highly recommend coming by and experiencing one of New Zealands best museums.
Karoline Christensen — Google review
What an important piece of history this is, displayed in a unique manner, each hall telling the story of the two greatest conflicts of the 20th Century.
We enjoyed reading the personal stories that shaped the Wars, learned things about each that were unknown to us and our guides were extremely knowledgeable and courteous.
This is a must-visit if you’re staying in the area and Peter Jackson’s contribution to this historical attraction must be commended. It’s important that people visit to keep the story alive.
Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours and as a tip, check Book Me Blenheim as we saved several dollars by booking both exhibits in advance. Each is well worth the admission.
Sean O'Connor — Google review
What a pleasant surprise to find this during our trip!
It’s very easy to spend the whole afternoon here, especially if you choose the WWI and WWII exhibits like we did.
There are also knowledgeable guides to give you advice about your walkthrough, plus information about the displays.
Probably best to break the exhibits up with a stop at the cafe. They have nice open indoor and outdoor seating options. The outdoor area gives you a view of small planes that periodically fly past.
Highly recommend a visit. They have good parking, it’s in a convenient location, the displays and collections are impressive, and there is plenty for history lovers to read. There were also a few groups with young children, so good for the whole family.

OMG the best museum ever. It was great, there are no words to describe how it leaves you feeling or even wondering how they do it. Well I do as my mum did it on a much smaller scale but this place you have to see before you leave this planet. Both WW1 and WW2 areas take you to another zone.

What an amazing experience😳 if you are an aviation enthusiast then you have to visit Omaka Aviation Heritage Museum.
The amount of informatiom provided, the passion and care taken to make it the most valuable experience one can get is incredible.
What makes it even better is some of the displayed aircraft are originals and flying actually still fly making it even more special. The world war two display was great and the CGI Stalingrad video was a great touch.
Will definitely make visit again.

This museum is amazing, true hidden gem of the South Island. We toured the WWII exhibit, so much personal history and stories from the region & era. 100% recommended.
Greg Peterson — Google review
Such an excellent setup and collection. The aviation enthusiasts who are all volunteers are more than willing to share information on the aircraft on display. I found it interesting how many aircraft are still air worthy.
Alister Buhler — Google review
Great to see vintage planes, the early first world war planes were specially interesting, these men were really special to go up in these machines. Time just flew by, some great dioramas.
Alasdair Purvis — Google review
Highly recommend the museum to all plane buffs, pilots, and anyone interested in WW1 and WW2 memorabilia. The display is well laid out and extensive. Allow more time than you think you will need. Parking is free and plentiful and there is a gift shop also selling cold drinks and snacks.
Kathy — Google review
Two separate exhibitions for WW1 and WW2. Planes and memorabilia are stunningly displayed in awesome tableaus. Plenty of historical and mechanical information plus human interest stories. Lovely little cafe and curio shop too.
Alexandra King — Google review
Fantastic place to visit. Very well displayed history on WW1 and WW2 aircraft.
Make sure you put aside enough time to look through the displays and memorabilia. Peter Jacksons WW1 collection is truly a sight to see with some very rare war planes on show.
Highly recommended

World class aviation museum with good information and memorabilia. I have no interest in planes but loved the tour and displays here, even inviting others to come back with me another time. Cafes pretty good too.

Impressive record of aviation development and aerial combat history.
Superb displays. The life-like displays feel like live action settings, as if the incidents are happening before your eyes. Congratulations to the set builders.
Moris Kovitz — Google review
We only saw the WW1 museum as the WW2 one was closed for an event, however this is one of the best of its kind I have visited. The planes and artifacts were imaginatively displayed, the guide we spoke to was friendly and helpful. Highly recommended

Absolutely brilliant day out, both the WW1 & WW2 exhibitions are incredible, definitely worth it. The shop is also great with friendly staff
Alex Robertson — Google review
A well displayed and historical reference to the great wars, aircraft & stories of the people surrounding them.
In this instance I was attending as part of an Airforce reunion group whereby we had access to a few history buffs. They shared further insight about the history of some of the aircraft and displays etc.
Aaron Clark — Google review
There were cheaper tickets online, however we had a bit of trouble purchasing these and the man at the kiosk was not keen to honour the cheaper price, so definitely recommend shopping around on some of the third party sites.
Because of the price we elected to only do the one exhibit, which was the WW2 airplane show.
This was on the smaller side, but none the less very spectacular and well arranged.
The history both of the aircraft as well as how the airplane came to this museum, how it was restored etc. was very cool.
We particularly liked the segment about the battle of Britain.
Nick B — Google review
What a great place situated on what was an historic airfield. It’s a bit shy, from the outside nothing prepares you for the actual exhibits. The WWI hall is the most comprehensive display of it,s kind. And so many of the planes actually fly.
There are exceedingly rare originals along with airworthy replicas. Reminded me of Suttleworth collection, but laid out better.
Good display of uniforms and ephemera and carefully laid out diorama on a scale of 12 inches to the foot.
Off to the WWII hall and an interesting story regarding a downed pilot greets you.
Again the planes are well presented, originals and replicas. Interestingly they have a MkXIV Spitfire. Again well presented laid out scenes add to the story.
The Stalingrad CGI? In two minds, but the graphic regarding losses is well presented, it brought home to this amateur historian the extent of the Eastern front.
Would love to visit again, especially during an air show

AWESOME place! But alas not enough time to go through the exhibits. We paid to see the WW1 section but I felt I needed more time and will definitely come back. There’s so much to see, read and explore. The layout, design and curation is just unbelievable and top notch for a world traveller like myself. To find this gem in the middle of such a remote location is just amazing. The voluntary guides are so kind, friendly, informative and passionate :) I highly recommend visiting this place for a good few hours. The cafe and gift shop are also very good, nice coffee, sitting areas and tasteful range of souvenirs to pick from. I’ve seen Peter Jackson’s permanent exhibit of Gallipoli in Te Papa in Wellington and it’s pretty much another perfect example of what incredible work Weta’s team are capable of achieving. Well done to all involved in making this place happen! As a car enthusiast, I can’t wait to see the Classic Cars section when it’s opened!
daezjn — Google review
A Fascinating visit to the World War 1 and World War 2 exhibits. So interesting we spent 4.5 hours there. You could spend less time but Mr S read everything! The planes are all in excellent order-mix of real and replica models. The re-enactment scenes (by Sir Peter Jackson’s company) really bring history to life. Having seen the Gallipoli exhibit at the museum of New Zealand in Wellington and having visited Omaka we understood the tremendous sacrifice made by New Zealand as part of the allied forces during both world wars.

This is by far the best Heritage Centre we have ever visited anywhere. The guides are really good at interacting with you such that you feel you are on a personal tour. Nice little cafe too. Very thought provoking video at the end of the WW2 exhibition…. Do both WW1 & 2.

Our second mail boat experience and still as good as our previous trip in 2017. We have previously done the "Western" route and so this time we did the "Outer Sounds". The boat is now much bigger than our first trip and so not quite such an intimate experience but still very enjoyable. We loved the skipper's informative commentary with a lovely dry sense of humour! It's amazing how people can live so much "off the grid" as they do. Had a great picnic stop on a wild, secluded beach under perfect blue skies. The trip was made extra special when we came across a large pod of lively dolphins. The boat turned around and gently followed them for 15-20 minutes. What a wonderful experience! We highly recommend booking the mail boat for a unique day out.

I did the Friday Outter Sound tour on a grey and rainy day but it was still a beautiful way to spend a day in New Zealand. The crew was very accommodating and educational. This is a part of New Zealand that many people don't get to see. I highly recommend it.
Plus you get to see pups and pigs too!

Picked a perfect day to fo this trip and loved it ! The various people waiting at the end of the jetties for their deliveries were fascinating and the information from the tour guides was really informative. The lunch stop was also good.

Fantastic day, despite the weather growing cold, windy & wet as the day progressed.
Ross the skipper, and crewman Mark were friendly, humorous & very informative.
A great way to experience the Sounds and see the mail and other goods being delivered to remote residents and their friendly tail wagging dogs! 😊
Awesome scenery. Lucky to see a fur seal sunbathing on the rocks.
Lunch at Te Rawa Restaurant was delicious - I recommend the seafood chowder and the mussels.
I also recommend that the staff member at check-in represent the Pelorus Mail Boat in a more personable and less abrupt manner.
First impressions are important.

Despite it being a cloudy day with a chilly wind, it was an excellent day trip. The skipper is very skilled and has a great knowledge of the area and wildlife. We were made very welcome. A member of our party is in a wheelchair and she was treated very courteously. We thoroughly enjoyed the day. Thank you all.

Great value , fantastic trip , take a packed lunch or have a well priced beer and food at the pub with water access only , about 6 hours of stunning views but wrap up warm and wind proof if u want to stay on the top deck but did lose a star because the speakers are broke and couldn't sit outside and hear the tour which is important, blue tooth that speaker or something

We had an awesome day in the sounds in the Mail Boat.
The views are magnificent and it is great to have a glimpse of how "real people" live there.
Everyone is chatty, the wharfs on the way are all different, the staff on the boat is lovely (special mention to Lauren).
It is more of a contemplating trip than something really active and young kids might find it a bit long, but with the (short) break for lunch it is still alright.

A really well worthwhile introduction to the Marlborough Sounds. It's a safe and relatively smooth trip inside the sounds so no need to worry about seasickness. Loads of picture opportunities as you come into tiny picturesque jettys and greet the folk and their dogs. The skipper and mate keep up a greatly informative guide to the people and places you visit.

Cloudy Bay Vineyards offers a picturesque setting with the Richmond Ranges as a backdrop, providing a perfect spot to relax and enjoy their renowned Sauvignon Blanc. Visitors can unwind on the newly renovated deck, picnic on the lawn, or lounge in egg chairs while savoring their wine. The winery also features Jack's Raw Bar, where guests can indulge in Tio Point oysters, sashimi, clams, and venison carpaccio paired with their exquisite wines.
Gorgeous vineyard with delicious dishes worth trying out. Was recommended by a friend and the place did not disappoint. Oysters were fresh, wine refreshing and appetite was filled. Would visit again!

Beautiful winery! The scenery was stunning with the large trees, vineyard, and fun swings. They do serve food there too (not sure how big their menu is). 100% would recommend
Courtney Desh Shaked — Google review
Our visit to Jack’s Raw Bar began with a remarkable wine tasting experience, where the knowledgeable staff expertly guided us through the distinct profiles of each wine. Their insights were invaluable, especially when we decided to ship 9 bottles back to Australia. The team's consideration in advising us on unique wines not available in Australia, thereby saving us on unnecessary freight and tax costs, was particularly appreciated.
Following the tasting, we indulged in a leisurely lunch at the raw bar. The oysters were exceptionally tender, literally melting in the mouth, and the tuna ceviche, the day's special, was a delightful blend of fresh flavors. While the cheese and charcuterie board was generous, it could have benefited from a better balance, featuring more meats and cheeses and less bread. Nonetheless, the overall quality and freshness of the meal were impressive.
We also took time to wander through the gardens, absorbing the serene beauty of the vineyards.
The combination of exquisite wines, delectable food, and stunning surroundings made for a memorable day. We would come back in a heartbeat

Loved the private vineyard tour we had yesterday at Cloudy Bay. We had a superb tour in a classic restored Land Rover to a number of their vineyards learning such a lot, including a unique opportunity to taste the grapes right before picking. Our tour started with a tour of the ‘library’ and area where their wives are created and ended with a tasting at the winery itself. Nicky our guide was superb - a great asset to the winery. Thanks to Cloudy Bay for increasing our knowledge of vinoculture & winemaking in general and specifically as it relates to Cloudy Bay. With the rain yesterday we also understand where cloudy bay gets its name 😀 ( joke…)
The winery is smart. The buildings and cellar door / tasting rooms are also beautifully built ( I gather a major refurbishment over the last couple of years).
Most of all, we loved the classic Cloudy Bay sauvignon blanc we tasted.
We would highly recommend this private tour.

Me and my wife had an amazing experience at this vineyard. We took the Cloudy Bay Experience tasting and it was marvelous. Swafka, the sommelier who attended us was very kind and showed deep knowledge about the wines we were tasting. Really reccomend this winery if you are visiting the Malborough region.

Great New Year's Day lunch. Excellent oysters. Beef tartare, salmon and tuna dishes all had delicious dressings and were very tasty. Likewise the stuffed courgette was also scrumptious, as was the sourdough bread and olive oil.
Lovely to have a menu based on uncooked ingredients; a great contrast from traditional cooked meats, BBQs, etc. menus.
Highly recommended for anyone who is looking for a different style of menu.

We love visiting wineries since we live close to Napa and Sonoma and also have had Cloudy Bay wines in the US so this was supposed to be the highlight.......only it wasn’t. It was as another reviewer commented a corporate experience which reminded me of some wineries in Napa and furthermore the staff in the tasting room didn't appear genuinely warm but standoffish. All the wines we had were a let down. Their sparkling was the only decent out of the bunch. We've had much better wines when we visited Waiheke Island and Forrest and Framingham! The saving grace was dining outside at their on-site restaurant. The oysters, clams, ceviche and zucchini salad was what set the tone for the rest of our experience. Being a winery, the food did not disappoint and we ended up ordering seconds for some of the items. Beautiful scenery and backyard. Just come here for the food; not the wines and head on over to Framingham where the wines are better quality!

Great setup but don’t think staff are equipped to handle a sudden influx of customers! Called earlier in the day and were told there is no need to book only to realise they didn’t have tasting slots available or tables for lunch. So we had a cheese platter and Rośe but manager asked us to pay upfront instead of allocating a table or a tab for 8 of us. No one cared to follow-up about the table we were to get after 20min so we walked out!

Gorgeous and serene winery overlooking the mountains! Staff is very on it and promptly answers questions. We did a couple tastings and sat outside on one of the white patio couches to enjoy wine. There were blankets available to keep warm. Love their little tree swings! I wish they had heat lamps outside as it was a bit cold but we really enjoyed spending time here.
Jennifer Johnson — Google review
Great experience with Coline as our guide through their wines. We did not have a booking but they managed to find a table for us and did not bet an eye on two people getting one wine tasting (as the other was a driver)! We truly loved the experience!
Klaudia Piaseczna — Google review
A slightly disappointing experience...
I was looking very much forward to it, after finding the winery online during my Central Otago visit.
The team is polite and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, they just seemed so uninterested to be there. Perhaps it was the time of day, as I had my tasting booked for 3 pm (closing is at 4 pm).
I had to wait quite a bit to be served and was given the absolute minimum of their attention, while being served.
The wines are delicious, but the experience could have been much better.
I've had quite a few tastings across both the South as well as the North Island. Sadly, this one was my bottom three.
Huge shame...
Anna Kaminska — Google review
Staff had a ‘could not care less’ attitude.
We were shocked by their rudeness.
It was our first experience of New Zealanders and we were disappointed.
The food was ok. Nothing exceptional or overly exciting and extremely expensive for what it was.
They had a ‘rule’ that each table could only order HALF a DOZ oysters, regardless of whether there were 2 people or 8 people on a table. We were a group booking, so it didn’t make sense.
We purchased 2 top end bottles of wine and there was zero care from staff to keep them cold in the blazing sun which was so hot on our table that we couldn’t touch the cutlery as it was too hot.
Disappointed that would cause me to cease supporting the business in the future by no longer to purchase their wines as we have for many years.
I am 100% positive that they couldn’t give a damn either way anyway.
Such arrogance.

The Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway is a scenic path that runs along the coastline, offering stunning views of the ocean and clifftops. Visitors have the opportunity to witness various marine animals such as seabirds, seals, and whales. The walkway can be accessed by taking a right from the carpark, descending down stairs to reach the Seal Colony area. Recognition of being on track is when one reaches the white stone path.
A great free activity to see a decent length of the coast and some seals up close. We walked the beach / low track first and then back along the top because we started quite late in the afternoon and this was the best option for us. It's a leisurely walk with stairs. A good walk with great views totally worth it.

Generally a easy hike with good scenic views in good weather conditions, a round trip would take no more then 3hrs.
Was able to sight seals sunbathing along the coast.
However it does get extremely muddy and slippery at certain sections after rain, especially at sections where the trail takes you across cow pastures.

Gorgeous! Clear blue sea color even under this cloudy day. Wild animals all around, fur seals sometimes pop up in the bush! Definitely worth to come and have a visit. Walk along the seashore and climb up the hill to enjoy the whole picturesque view.

Take a right at the carpark, down the stairs and around the coastline to see the Seal Colony. Once you hit the white stone path, then you know you are on the right track. Beautiful spot for photos, the rocks look out of this world and the colours are amazing. There is also the lookout track, which is a lot longer
William Lin — Google review
One of the more popular attractions in Kaikoura and one should cater about 2hrs to complete the tracks. The view is even better on top, however the path was quite steep and the tracks were muddy after the rain. Ample free parking with a toilet at the start of the track. Great driving view on the way to the walkway.
We got to see seals too and be mindful that they may venture inwards away from the beach, as we saw one at the walkway like in the photo.

The Kaikoura Peninsula is truly stunning. Its breathtaking landscapes, with majestic mountains meeting the deep blue ocean, create a picture-perfect setting. The rich marine life and the opportunity for seal watching makes it even more special. Parking is easy.

This is a fabulous walk, provided you skip most of it.
Much of the full circuit is a concrete footpath, or boardwalk, alongside the road, with nothing to see apart from the ocean (which is lovely, but doesn’t change until the very end of the road).
The best way to do this is drive to the very end of the road, park in the car park, walk along the rocks below the cliff until Whalers Bay, then follow the path and steps up to the headland and access the proper walk all the way back to the car park.
This will take you a couple of hours at most, and bring you right up close to the seals, and then give you the wonderful views all the way back. (Or vice versa, cliff then reef is fine).
Stop off at the crayfish van on the way there or back for lunch, and you’ve done the best of Kaikōura without the 2 hour slog along the road.

Well managed place but it would be nice if there was some shelter for resting. Tracks are marked well and finding a car can be challenging. This is a popular spot to park your vehicle and for your hike. This snow one free activity you can do in Kaikoura.
Ravi Lal — Google review
This is arguably the best walk we’ve done in New Zealand. Varied landscape: from low down near water level, to high up on the cliffs. Well-maintained pathways, both man-made and organic. Viewing platforms and information boards.
Toilets at beginning and end. About an hour and a half to two hours depending on how many stops. A further thirty minutes back to Kaikoura. Or longer if you stop for sustenance at the road-side BBQ and drinks stall.
Hamish & Vivienne Pringle — Google review
Loved this walkway. Amazing views from the top of the cliffs & you can watch the seals below or walk back on the bottom & see them up close & personal! There's a small yellow lighthouse at the start of the walk at the top of the hill & after that, theres rural views & a grassy track on the cliff top with seats placed strategically for the views.

You can Google the location here for parking. In fact, you can see many seals here, and on a clear day, you can even glimpse distant snow-capped mountains. Capture stunning shots as you like!

Crazy beautiful walk and the seals were awesome 🤩
Wear sensible shoes 👞 cause of rocks on the path.

One of the best walkways in New Zealand, if not the world! Seeing seals up close and in their natural habitat was spectacular. The walk up to the top gives unreal views all around. Take your time here, lots of exploring to do and a decent sized car park with washrooms. I'd say 2-3 hours is good. The trail is a loop if you keep going.

Not a difficult walk. Amazing views south over the Pacific Ocean and stunning rock formations. Recommend doing the walk towards the end of the day as the sun is setting.

Some interesting rock formations and patterns to see just a 5 minute walk from the car park.
Plus you should spot a few seals around as well.

Best spot to see lots of seals in close distance! Highly recommended family activity in Kaikoura.

The hike is just incredible. Can see Seals from really close distance. The full hike can take up to several hours. A short return hike is possible from the car park

Just walk further close to the end of the ground, trail long the cliffs. Eventually, we arrived at the seal colony. 🦭 most were basking in the sun fast asleep. We managed to catch some who have had enough UV rays and headed to the sea to cool off.

Nice short walk and so many seals! All taking naps in the sun or splashing around in the water. Definitely worth a stop in Kaikoura, we had such a great time. Make sure not to get too close to the seals as they are wild, but they seemed relatively used to humans being around and carried on napping as people were taking photos.
Georgina Bennett — Google review
Went for walk along coast and was amazed at how many seals there were lots of young ones as well all sunbathing on a beautiful day

Really lovely spot to see seals. Down the road there's another place where you can see the seals and mountains in the background. Just make sure to not go too close to the seals.
Daniella — Google review
If you don't mind the walk, there is hundreds of seals to see along the coastline. They just lie there basking in the sun on the rocks, and they're not bothered by people walking by so you end up pretty close to them. Definitely a highlight of visiting kaikoura.
Albany Bradley — Google review
Watch out your step! There are a lot of seals living here, you might bump into one of them on the way to colony.
Don’t disturb them for respect!
There are some car park at the entrance, just walk around 15-20mins , can get to the colony.
Juanita Huang — Google review
What a beautiful experience to walk past so many beautiful seals just lazing away the day & doing their own thing. You can walk from the carpark on the beach to see them or take the peninsular walkway for great views & then walk down the cliff to the colony. Please keep behind the roped area as they don't like being disturbed

Breathtaking route that takes you through hundreds of seals!
Amazing experience, gives National Geographic vibes.
Follow the route and be prepared & prepared for some scary seals on the way.

Great seal colony along the coast. The track is rocky, but flat. A great opportunity to see seal close up with them sunbathing on every rock and even sometimes on the path itself! We really enjoyed viewing these beautiful creatures.

A great place to see seals for free! Busy in weekends and sunny days, but a little quieter in week days.

The most popular walk to see seals in their natural environment at Kaikoura, is the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway.
As you do the loop and walk from the beach and then on top of the cliff. Keep a lookout to sea. Dolphins, whales and occasionally even orcas, pass the Kaikoura peninsula walkway and Kean Point.
Yes, I have seen dolphins leaping out of the water in a pod.
W R Edwards — Google review
Very interesting, we saw lots of seals and the walk was quite nice but it was very windy. There also were lots of dead seals and seal bones everywhere.
Kalle Schinger — Google review
Great place to go for a walk with some great views and the chance of seeing seals and other wildlife! Keep an eye on the tide! I'd recommend walking the beach section first if the tide is out to avoid getting caught out.
Kieran Whiteman — Google review
Superb seal colony that stretches around the coast. There is an abundance of seals in the vast area. At some parts, you can watch them play in the pools or laze in the sun from afar. There are two places you can get very close to them, but be mindful mothers are very protective of their babies that wander. You need decent shoes to do this vast area. It also can get a little windy in places. Besides the abundance of seals and birds it is a beautiful walk along this coast.
D Sundance — Google review
There are so many seals! 🦭 so adorable 🥰 however, we recommend stay at least 10M from the seals. Yes there is sign mention about that but we didn’t realise that when we enter🥲 however, there are some dead seals at this colony, if you bring children together, better watch out for that💕

Spent hours watching the seals and their pups playing on this gorgeous bit of coast. You can be quite close to them at certain parts. The coastal walk is stunning . Very unique rock formations.
Michelle Ross — Google review
A fantastic free show given by Mother Nature.
NZ fur seals are actually sea lions and the colony is predominantly bachelors aged between 1 and 4. However there is a small nursery with mums and pups.
Just sit, quietly by the sea and the seals will come happily past you.
Access is rough, wear decent shoes. Keep an eye on the tide.

It's not just a forest. It's an experimental exotic plantation a century after it was begun! With a humorously cute sculpture trail to explore.
We loved the walk as a family with a 4yo in tow but it would also have been great on bikes, even for the youngest.

A quick stroll in the forest. We did the 'Forest Amble' track. A quick track rated at 30 minutes that was an easy stroll. We stopped at all the signs and attractions - it took us 50 odd minutes. Great walk. The carvings are very good.

We walked the Sculpture Track and the forest journey and it was a lovely place. The sculpture wall would be great for families and along with he beautiful scenery of the forest you can find the sculptures along your journey. An easy flat track to walk. The journey track is nice for a longer walk.

Super interesting European forest, lots of beautiful walks, right next to freedom camping sites, with DOC facilities nearby. The sculptures are beautifully done. Its a shame they dont do a very good job of representing NZ wildlife. Just possums and squirrels and rats?? What on earth where they thinking?? Like the craftsmanship is fantastic but where is the pride of kiwi animals? It did have fantails and tuatara which was why I gave this 4 stars.

The estate is absolutely stunning, there is plenty of parking and the cellar door is part of a mansion that overlooks the hills, gardens and ponds below.
The restaurant here is no longer open which is a shame but the wine is still excellent. Tastings provide you with many options of reds and whites, and it’s free if you spend over a certain limit.
Once you’re done with tasting, it’s worth taking a walk in their gardens below, it is amazing and so serene.
Only note is that the tasting room gets very very busy, we only had one person serving more than 10 groups at one point, got a little out of hand where you just get poured your wine and they’re off helping the next customer. Gotta be patient!

Very pretty winery with gardens and a beautiful lake, there’re ducks, swans, fish and eels in it.
Love the way food is provided, you need to pick a cute wooden box to collect a variety of wine pairing snacks like prosciutto, cheese, olives, pickles, bread etc. The kitchen also provide several flavors of homemade meat pies, they taste super yum especially the pie crust, very nice bakery!
Pick any indoor or outdoor seats you wish, both are comfortable and relaxing.
Staff are friendly and caring.
The interior design has some wine bottle creations, and I love the wine related quote written on walls, give you lot of feeling and smiles.

Drove all the way down from Christchurch to visit Pegasus Bay for its Riesling wines and wasn't disappointed. They offer a tasting of several wines for about 10 NZD which could also be counted into the purchase of a bottle of wine.
I enjoyed the Riesling wines the most and the late-harvest ones have varying sweetness which makes excellent dessert wines. The Encore was pretty nice, it was richly sweet like honey and leaves a nice lingering sweet aroma, something that is bound to leave an impression. There is also a much lighter version: The Aria if the Encore is too rich.
There is also a garden to stroll around and a deli to chill and relax. The pies by Hope River is pretty delicious. I had the Lamb, Rosemary and Kumara which has nice tender, juicy chunks of lamb and delightful crust. The pricing is reasonable too.

Pegasus Bay Winery offers an exceptional experience with its exquisite Riesling wine, charming surroundings, and fantastic service. The blend of modern architecture and rustic charm, coupled with the beautiful garden, creates a truly enchanting atmosphere. The staff's knowledge and passion for wine enhance the tasting experience. Banks Peninsula, a volcanic promontory spanning over 440 square miles, is a popular destination for hiking as well as dolphin sightings. The village situated within the harbor shares its name with the peninsula and is celebrated for being the sole French settlement in New Zealand. Cave Rock, also known as Tuawera, is a stunning natural landmark along the shoreline. It features a small cave that offers beautiful ocean views and photo opportunities. Visitors can climb to the top of the rock to admire the panoramic view or walk through the cave and come out from a different exit. The area is clean and well-maintained, with nearby restaurants offering hot drinks and beer for visitors to enjoy after their exploration. However, it can get chilly during winter months.

The Canterbury Museum is a fine institution in the city center which houses a diverse range of artifacts that span New Zealands history and culture. From permanent exhibitions covering a wide range of topics to special exhibitions, there's something for everyone to enjoy at this museum.
One of my favourite places in the world. The simulated historical shopping street is a particular delight and had been since childhood decades ago. A must visit in the Botanical Gardens and Arts Centre area.

Staff was very friendly. The museum is closed but they had an urban art exhibit called Thrive on. We quite enjoyed this! It takes you all over the building, including offices and conference rooms that have been converted into art. Great way to spend an afternoon.
Pamela De Jaeger — Google review
They are about to open a new location so their current one has limited space. There was a show by a contemporary Māori artist as well as selections from what I assume to be the museum's permanent collection. The objects on display were fascinating but could have used some more contemporary context. For example: How did all the taxidermy come to be in this museum? What cultural influences encouraged this type of specimen collection as a display method? I look forward to seeing what a contemporary exhibition designer does with these objects in their new location. It is worth checking out if you're in the area. The art gallery around the corner does a much better job confronting the legacy of museums and colonialism. See both with a friend and talk about the differences.

The SHIFT Urban Art Takeover is undoubtedly the most unique and captivating museum I've ever set foot in! Essentially, it's a massive playground constructed where talented street artists showcase their work. Graffiti masterpieces adorn every surface. Firstly I have to emphasize how friendly and helpful the staff are. They're so excited about explaining all the items and the book called 150 Items in Canterbury Museum. I love the "Six Extinction" theme held with some casts from Botswana Studio. They're doing a great job casting the original fossils for the other part of the world to see. Especially Scotty the T-rex.

The main museum was undergoing renovations when I visited but based on what was open for display I would definitely come back once renovations are finished. The musuem itself wasn't too bad, though anyone could come in, there were some really rude kids that came in and weren't respecting the items in there...
Although the items in there are pretty ok!
If you have kids that like dinosaurs,it would be a good place to visit.
Enen Lim — Google review
There were some cool things on display at the temporary location. Enjoyed the art exhibition. The museum was a bit small, but it wasnt packed, so we enjoyed getting around. We didn't realise the main museum was getting renovations done and was told it would take 6-7 years to complete. Would have been better if that was open
Mia M — Google review
I recently paid a visit to the Canterbury Museum and came away with a mix of feelings. The museum's "Six Extinctions" exhibition was an absolute marvel – a powerful exploration of the planet's environmental history. 🌍🦕
However, I must admit, the art gallery is a different kind of experience. The New Zealand art on display is certainly something to appreciate, but it's essential to be open-minded. The freedom of speech expressed through the art is quite evident and, at times, not suitable for children. 🖼️🎨
Some pieces are thought-provoking, while others might be challenging, depending on your perspective. But this is where the museum offers a unique space for dialogue and artistic expression. 🗣️🇳🇿
While I wouldn't give it a full five stars due to the potential for sensitive content, I believe the Canterbury Museum is a place where you can explore the spectrum of human creativity, from the marvels of science to the depths of artistic expression. It's an experience that's definitely worth a visit. 🏛️🧐 #ArtandScience #FreedomofExpression #CanterburyMuseum

Christchurch's Botanic Gardens is a vast, sprawling garden that offers visitors a diverse range of plants from around the world. Spanning 30 hectares, the gardens are particularly beautiful in spring when the trees are in full bloom. There are several themed gardens to explore as well as a playground for kids and a cafe with gift shop. Guided walks depart from either Canterbury Museum or the Botanic Gardens visitor center every hour from October to May.
Always an amazing place for a walk any time of year. Beautifully curated with many different zones for different plants. Lots of choices for picnic spots. Each of the tropical houses or fern houses are a must see with the range of colourful flowers and plants

Not without a reason this city is called Garden City. Regardless of the time of they year and if you are a local or visiting tourist - Botanic Gardens never disappoint. It’s one of the most beautiful gardens in New Zealand. Plenty of walkways to explore amazing collections of flowers, bushes and some of the oldest trees in the country. Walkways by the river are especially rewarding and calming with the water. There are some “hidden” houses offering some indoor plants and tropical flora, rose garden is especially beautiful during blooming time in spring, but so is everything else. Autumn colours have it’s unique charm too. Something for everyone, families, couples and groups. For parents with kids there is dedicated playground area. Parking places are quite limited but there are some surrounding streets around Harley Park where you can always find a spot.

Lot of flowers too in the hot house as you can see on the picture. Another little house for the fern with wood moas. Car park is free during three hours, it is enough to visit all the park.

Beautiful place to visit, relax and take a stroll. Running around it is the Avon river, which has ducks, eels and sometimes Swan's
Playground for the children and an ice cream shop close by. Great place for a picnic or to have sometime to sit and read a book.
The greenhouse has many tropical plants, everything from banana plant to cactus.
Must see gardens if you are visiting Christchurch

Came early on a sunny Sunday as easier to get parking. The grounds are well maintained with lots of areas and trees/flowers to explore. The visitors centre coffee shop is a good place to stop for a break. Watch out for the birds trying to get your sandwiches!

A beautiful spot to wander around just outside of the centre of Christchurch. Full of constantly changing beds of flowers and a variety of indoor areas you'll almost always find something new.
The rose garden is particularly special and there's even a heritage rose garden hidden away on the other side of the Avon River. The fountains and statues throughout the park provide a widely varied experience and the New Zealand gardens can even provide you a glimpse of what the wild West Coast is like.

Easily one of the best features of the Garden City Ōtautahi Christchurch. I absolutely love the Botanic Gardens and frequently visit for a stroll with friends or by myself as it is so refreshing. There's lots of birdsong and gorgeous flowers all year round. No matter how many times I visit there is always something new to see! I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city.

The gardens are completely free. We did, however, book a guided tour in a little bus, which was $25pp. I never thought I would see a Californian Red Wood tree in my lifetime, and they have 7 of them in the park. Well, it's worth a visit. It's definitely one of the best parks I have seen in all my travels.

Loved the gardens and the 2 lovely staff we saw (at Door 1) adding touches to the fairy walk for the July 2022 school holidays.
Highly recommend checking out the amazing tree near the peacock fountain!
Look forward to the next school holiday activity there!

Free parking, lots of beautiful gardens and the river flowing through the middle. Very peaceful and recommend a visit while in Christchurch.
So many gorgeous flowers, interesting buildings and good public amenities.
We had a travel pram with okay (not great) wheels - we got a bit stuck in some of the gravel paths - sunk into the gravel and pushing was a challenge.

Definitely a five star experience, so good we had to go back for a second visit. Magnificent trees. Avon river running through only adds to the experience. Don't miss the heritage rose garden - in full flower November, and the cottage vegetable garden.

One of my favorite go-to places to relax. Spring time is the best season to visit as the flowers are in full bloom. All sorts of colors will flood your senses 🥰 Aside from that, there's also a playground with a paddling pool nearby so the kids will also enjoy.

Christchurch Botanic Garden is an absolute gem in the heart of the city! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I recently had the pleasure of visiting this serene oasis, and it exceeded all my expectations. The garden's beauty is unmatched, with a vast collection of plants and flowers that will delight any nature lover. 🌿🌺
The diverse range of themed gardens, including the Rose Garden and the Water Garden, offers a delightful experience for every season. The carefully manicured landscapes, stunning floral displays, and tranquil water features create a sense of peace and tranquility. 🌷💧
One of the highlights for me was the Avon River, which gently winds its way through the garden. You can even take a punt ride for a unique perspective of the surroundings. 🚣♂️
The garden's free entry is a bonus, making it accessible to all. It's a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, a family picnic, or simply finding a quiet corner to relax and escape the city's hustle and bustle. 🧺🌞
Overall, Christchurch Botanic Garden is a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike. Whether you're a botany enthusiast, a photographer, or just someone looking for a peaceful retreat, this place has something for everyone. 📸🌲
I couldn't recommend it more highly, and I can't wait to return to witness its beauty in different seasons. Don't miss out on this green paradise in the heart of Christchurch!" 🌳💚

Amazing plant inventory and historic plantings that survived the earthquake. Loved the little golf cart train tour with Karen's commentary. Lots of history and info. Great cafe at the mid point. Would definitely go again. Allow minimum 2 hours to half a day.

Huge gardens you can spend hours walking around, there are lots of benches around the place you can sit and relax, and a couple of little cafes. There's a river going through it with heaps of ducks which is cute. Relaxing place to spend time if you enjoy nature and walking around

It's a beautiful place to go for a walk. There's lots to see when wandering around, to see different fauna and flora. The rose garden and the dahlias were blooming beautifully. The plant houses and the fern house are great places to explore. The botanic garden is just near the city centre and free to visit. Car park and toilets available.

Absolutely beautiful gardens. Whilst following the river, we arrived at the Gardens, accidentally. It was free, so we went in and I highly recommend it. It was gorgeous and we saw so many types of birds. The central rose gardens was in full bloom, the greenhouse was gorgeous, and the overall place was so beautiful and perfect for a stroll on a sunny day.

We had some spare time so we strolled around the botanic gardens. Entry is free, we have paid to see gardens not as good, There is a good cafe plus walking and shuttle (paid) tours. Get a free map, they highlight different areas according to the season. The conservatories, with various sections including tropical rain forest and desert cacti, was really good. There is a large rose garden (where the dahlia border is on the late summer map) and other sections displaying different vegetation. There are ponds and a play area and it is all set in a large horseshoe of a shallow river, where you may see a punt go by. There is car parking close by, along with many sports pitches and more lakes. There is a suggested 30 min walk. We spent a couple of hours, would have spent longer if we weren't off to the airport, enjoying the tranquility.
Keith Carrington — Google review
The gardens are a nice mix of park, arboretum, a few sculptures, a stream, ponds and the greenhouses and a peacock-less fountain. The greenhouses were a treat with bright floral displays and some specialist areas. There are sculptures dotted around, and plenty of birdlife to spot.
You can spend a couple of hours wandering around.

The gardens are stunning! They are so close to where we stayed and it was open on Christmas Day! It was a lovely place to walk through and there are so many places to stop for a minute and enjoy the birds and life there. There are also so many little places to read or sit for a minute. Definitely worth a wander while in Christchurch.

Stunningly beautiful in autumn ❤️🩷💚
Will visit again next time we fly down to CHC.
About 20min to the airport, a great stop on the way to catch a flight. I wish we have a bit more time as it is a really beautiful.

Lots of big and amazing trees. The Giant Redwood tree is magnificent. The Rose garden is a must see. Lots of different varieties or colors of roses. Under the big glass dome, you will wind many subtropical plants. I like the cactus room and room with lots of pitcher plants. A beautiful big garden for a walk with beautiful avon river. Parking is pretty reasonable inside the park. I also love the beautiful weeping willow trees.

The TranzAlpine Train is a scenic train journey between Christchurch and Greymouth in the Southern Alps. The journey takes about 5 hours and offers breathtaking views of the alpine landscape, with excursions including passes over staggering viaducts and breathtaking mountain passes.
We did one way from Greymouth to Christchurch and it was great. Easy check in process at Greymouth Station. You don't choose your seats when booking, your seats are allocated when you check in at the station.
Lovely views, approx 5 hours on the train. 4 of us went (all adults), got seated around a table. We found this comfy and roomy enough. If you don't get seated around a table, the other seats are 2 people seated next to each other with tray tables that fold down from the seat above (like airline seats).
There are 2 USB ports to charge devices, overhead luggage storage so no bags have to be stored under the table and headphone commentary along the way. I found the commentary actually okay to listen to, often I get bored with this stuff but I actually listened to some of it when I wasn't standing in the observation carriage. The observation carriage is great for seeing views and feeling the wind rush past you but the seated carriages have large windows for viewing if you don't walk to the observation carriage. We purchased some hot drinks and snacks and found it reasonably priced, I was expecting it to be somewhat overpriced for being on a train but it was standard pricing. The drinks and food were yum.
The entire train was clean, tidy. The toilets were clean! The Cafe carriage has seating but was closed understandably due to covid but food can be taken back to your allocated seat/table. Easy to walk between carriages and we were seated on a carriage between the Cafe and observation carriage so didn't have far to walk which was great.
We hired a rental car from Christchurch, drove across to the West Coast. On the day of the train trip we dropped our car off at the Greymouth rental company, which was across the road from the station (perfect) and got on the train. This was our first time doing the train and we liked it, would likely do it again. But I would probably recommend only doing it one way as I imagine a two way journey makes a long trip on a train, especially if do a return trip all on one day. We are happy we did the one way journey only, as felt it was long enough for us. More a personal preference.
Otherwise highly recommended to do.
Larissa Kalike — Google review
I love train travel so we booked return trip. It was a wonderful day. The views are amazing. The train was very clean and comfortable and the staff were lovely. We were lucky to get a table for two of us on the way to Greymouth and that is great when you want to eat/ drink. The train was full coming back so couldn't move from the airline type seats. They were very comfortable just felt more enclosed with a seat in front of you.
Doing the journey both ways have me some great photo opportunities - in the morning everything was green and sunny while in the afternoon it started snowing and giving everything a dusting of white. Beautiful, but very cold in the observation car when the snow started. Overall, it was fantastic and I'd do it again.
Leanne Bithell — Google review
Considering this is advertised as a scenic journey, it’s a shame that the windows weren’t freshly cleaned prior to our departure from Christchurch. That said, there is a good expansive of glass so that you can look out at the view.
There is a good commentary that you can listen to at different stages of the journey, over the complimentary headphones. A problem with this, though, is if there are any train announcements; these override the commentary, and you miss anything that was said during this period.
We travelled mid-January and although the views were okay, they are probably more spectacular when there is lying snow.
Soon after leaving there was an announcement that the open viewing car was open, which prompted a mad rush that made it difficult to see anything from this car. A short while later, though, there were only a few hardy souls left as it was quite a breezy place to be.
For those not riding in the Scenic Plus seats, the café provides a good selection of food at reasonable rates.
Overall, though, I have been on trips with more spectacular views, and I thought this was quite expensive for what it was.

TranzAlpine Scenic Train Journey from Christchurch to Greymouth is a must do. It's definitely worth the train ride instead of driving, especially for the driver as you can actually enjoy the scenery for once. Pick up the rental car from Greymouth instead, which is right inside the Greymouth Train Station. Go to to open air carriage for the best photo opportunities!
William Lin — Google review
A smooth yet expensive scenic train ride from one end of New Zealand to another through the river valleys and into the alps.
The train is clean and the seats are comfortable. The bigger glass windows enable passengers to have a better view during the relaxing journey. Overall experience was good but not great. Slightly disappointed with the overall scenery throughout the ride because it wasn’t as scenic as expected.
Ting Ting — Google review
Great scenery along the journey. Takes 4.5 hours as moves fairly slowly. Comfortable seats and an open air car to get a different set of views. Provides good commentary through headlines (provided) but was in audible as kept cutting out continuously which was very frustrating!

We took the scenic plus from Christchurch to Moana and back.
The views both ways were gorgeous.
At Moana, we went for a couple of short walks that were very beautiful.
On the return journey we weren’t very happy with the food. It was not flavourful, and the staff claimed to run out of certain items. But the views and scenery were as enjoyable as ever.
I think we paid over $2,000 for three tickets both ways and food should have been good both ways.
The staff were very polite and friendly.

Great train journey through the southern alps. Spectacular scenery. Comfotable seat with running commentary by headphones. Cafe on board for snacks and full breakfast if you want. One stop at Arthurs pass to stretch your legs. Really enjoyed the trip. The queues at Greymouth for hire cars were long. We hired a RAD car. There was no queue, and someone was waiting for us with the car keys.

We went from Christchurch to Arturs Pass where we rejoined our Bus tour. I spent the entire trip in the Cattle (Viewing) Car and loved the entire trip. Although the passenger cars were beautiful, clean, spacious, warm - I wanted the fresh air experience where i could take pictures without glass and reflections. Well worth going to the open air car if you are a photographer. It wasn't busy initially but got packed when we got into the foothills and mountains so you had to pick a side and stick with it. You miss some scenery that way but the same thing would have happened in the passenger cars. Beautiful trip.

Awesome views out the huge windows. The seats are very comfortable and have spacious leg room. There is a cafe with plenty of food options, I got a kumura and cashew pie which was killer!! Tasty and heated perfectly. The viewing carriage at the front was great fun to stand in, makes it feel much faster and was cool going through the tunnels on the coast. We also saw dolphins and loads of seals on the rocks.

I travelled to Arthur's Pass on this train and loved it. Check in was easy, my seat comfortable, there is scenery both sides to experience so it is not necessary to sit on right side. The cafe has a variety of options and coffee nice. Service and commentary excellent. I highly recommend this rail journey in New Zealand.

We travelled on the TranzAlpine from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass with a small tour group to travel on a minivan by road back to Christchurch. The train travel was thru scenic Canterbury Plains to the climb up the Southern Alps. The seating was comfortable and the dining car was functional to have a coffee and a tasty savoury scone.

I travelled from Christchurch to Arthurs Pass, overnighted 2 nights at Alpine Motel and returned on the same train. Buffet car serves hot and cold food, tea, coffee, mulled wine and other alcohol. Staff all fantastic and helpful. Not much of interest to see close up on leaving Christchurch but it gets more interesting the closer the train gets to the mountains and there is a good audio commentary available over free headphones. Some great walks of varying length and difficulty once you get to Arthurs Pass, only one place open for meals as Arthurs itself is closed and up for sale and Keas Cafe (also for sale) didnt open over the 2 days I was there and locals said it opens irregularly. You could come back on the same day as the train arrives Arthurs Pass around 10:40 , continues to Greymouth then returns to Arthurs Pass at 4:30 pm for a 7pm arrival back to Christchurch.

We had a wonderful time travelling from Greymouth to Christchurch on the TranzAlpine train! I would 100% recommend upgrading to Scenic Plus seating if it’s in your budget as the bonuses included are well worth it. Really nice cross country train trip that takes about four hours and moves through some extraordinary country side. Would recommend organizing your own food snacks to take as it would be cheaper and better than the microwave meals on board. Great staff, clean and modern train. A good day trip or lead into further traveling.

Excellent service. The staff were my was so attentive to everyone's needs it was almost like being in a top rated restaurant where humility instead of who was the requirement for enjoyment. While they didn't have a vegan dish on their menu, they scrambled a Delicious meal together for me that now than exceeded my expectation. They did better than American Airlines in that department. The views were stunning asking the route. The audio guide was very helpful. However, the stats need updating.

Awesome views, friendly helpful service, great way to travel for an enforced break. Only niggle was we thought the supplied packed lunch(with our package deal) was a bit stingy. - 2 sandwiches and a drink. Other participants in the deal in included a cake of some some sort. On the whole an awesome trip both ways

We rearranged our entire NZ South Island itinerary to take the TranzAlpine Greymouth to Christchurch. It didn’t disappoint!
Do yourself a favor and upgrade to Scenic+. The service was excellent; the staff fun, friendly and informative. The food was excellent and the wine New Zealand’s best. You see the landscape change and follow along on a guided audio tour. Highly recommend to anyone and everyone traveling across NZ.

Travelled both ways on this. I'm a well-travelled writer with experience of similar operations. I paid my own fare (full dining both ways) and did not announce my presence until the end (no special journo favours, thanks. Afterwards, I asked for the Press Office to contact me, but nothing since).
The marketing is not clear at best, deceptive at worst.
YOU DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY GET A TABLE, but are more likely to get airline-style seating. The person in charge of the car said that complaints about this happen regularly.
Staff were friendly and efficient, but if you expect a 'Pullman-style' service, you may be disappointed.
Food - airline standard rather than Orient Express.
The trip - enjoyable enough, but if you are also well-travelled, you'll probably have seen equally dramatic in Scotland, and more dramatic on mainland Europe.
The value - this is clearly aimed at profit-maximisation from a captive market (coach tours etc). Well done, if that is the sole purpose.
Would I do it again? No. It simply isn't worth the price for me.
Should others do it? Your choice, but if you've travelled half way around the planet from Europe, believe the marketing, and expect something grander than the Glacier Express, I suspect you'll be very disappointed.

The International Antarctic Centre is an attraction in Christchurch, New Zealand that showcases the importance of the city to scientific research conducted on Antarctica. The venue has three spaces which can hold up to 250 guests each, and offers extraordinary ways for your conference to stand out from the rest.
This attraction is a must visit for anyone who is in Christchurch. It offers great educational value. There is comprehensive information about Antarctica, life on the continent, ongoing preservation efforts about the continent and much more. Certainly made us more aware of the importance of protecting and preserving our environment and indeed our planet.
Invaluable experience!

I enjoyed my time at the international Antarctic centre. While it isn’t as large as I expected, there were so many unique experiences that I rate it a 5/5!
Firstly, the Hagglund ride across various terrains was so fun!
I also enjoyed the Antarctic storm experience, and thought that the igloo was a nice touch!
Finally is the animals. The huskies and penguins were absolutely adorable. Im particular, the sneak view into their burrows was unique.

Unfortunately I went wrong day and time to visit. People staying at same motel had been a few days earlier and said it was great and went round twice, so thought I'd go. Unfortunately they hadn't mentioned I needed to be there at a certain time and on particular days to see everything and I hadn't bothered to check on google as I just went on what they'd told me. Only day I could go was Wednesday morning, so missed out on the Huskies (not there Wed/Thurs?). Also missed out on penguin feeding as got there 20min too late (be there well before 1030am if going in morning). By time I'd stopped and looked at the penguins (rescues that can't be released back into the wild) and a few other things inside was 5 mins late for the 4D show and they'd locked the door so missed that too. (they do say it happens in threes, lol). Best bit while there was the hagglund ride outside and only paid $30, I think because penguin feeding had already finished and no huskies either. Would I go back, probably not, but could be an entertaining morning for families with young kids.

This is right next to the airport and has luggage storage, so it was a perfect getaway to avoid just waiting in the airport all afternoon! There are a lot of penguins, and they are all so cute. We did the VIP backstage tour, which was super cool, and I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more about penguin conservation efforts in NZ, or to anyone who just wants to see a cute little penguin up close and personal. I would definitely recommend a visit here!

Friendly staff and a fun atmosphere. The penguin feeding was a delight to watch. Our daughter loved to see the Huskies up close and really enjoyed being around their trainer, he was the highlight for her. Definitely stop at the gift store at the end, there are some great soft animals for the little ones.

Visited the International Arctic Museum, and my experience was a bit mixed. 🐧🎥
The museum had an amusement park vibe, with lots of kids around. You can watch the penguin feedings, which is a nice touch, and they have a 4D cinema. However, I found the cinema lacking in substance; it showed random videos of ice rocks and penguin life without any clear storyline. The noise from the hydraulics and air fans really detracted from the experience.
I'd rate it three stars. It's great if you have kids and want to interact with huskies and experience the storm room. But, at $59 NZD is a bit overpriced #ArcticMuseumExperience #FamilyFun #TravelTips

What a brilliant afternoon out here. W loved the snowstorm experience so much we did it twice. Lots to learn about, well presented and with enough fun stuff to keep the kids interested. I was a bit concerned it might be superficial but the connection with the Research Centre is strong and staff are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and very happy to share. Well worth a visit. Now we want to go to the real Antarctic. Penguins are fun too
Catherine Shovlin — Google review
An amazing experience that encapsulates the arctic experience.
The centre has a lot of things that are fun to do. You can experience the ice cold temperatures in a special room that even simulates a storm. A lot of information is presented about the arctic, arctic expeditions, wildlife and many other things. There is a 4D movie that is fun to watch and experience.
There is also lots of animal fun. Watching pinguins in their nest and during feeding time was such a cool experience. The handlers are also really nice and love to chat. The same goes for the huskies. They bring them out and tell a nice story about them whereafter you can pet them. They are used to all the humans so they are very relaxed.
There is also the Hägglunds ride, a Swedish arctic vehicle that will take you on a fun ride. Do make sure to hold on tight if you are in the back as the ride can get bumpy.
Overall such a fun experience for anyone interested in the arctic, animals or is just looking for a fun way to spend their day.

Having talked about going ballooning for so long we finally did it. What an amazing experience and Mike's skill at controlling the balloon was unbelievable. He even brought us back and landed in the paddock beside the base with barely a bump. We are not young and my partner is very short so didn't know how to get into the basket. Not a problem to Mike he solved that one to. The views once up were well worth the flight. My advice if you don't do it you have missed an oportunity of your life.

A wonderful experience on this balloon ride. Very unique way of getting to see the sunrise and countryside of this area! The team at Ballooning Canterbury goes above in beyond for this tour. You are involved in the setup and takedown of the balloon, educated on traditions in ballooning, and taken aback by the gorgeous views in the air. Highly recommend.

My partner and I had the most wonderful morning with Ballooning Canterbury. Get ready to be useful, it's a group effort when setting up and breaking down, but I thought it made the trip all the more memorable and worthwhile. I highly recommend Ballooning Canterbury for a once in a lifetime experience :)

Our experience with Ballooning Canterbury was soo amazing!
It's a wonderful sunrise flight with gorgeous views and learning more about the area.
Additionally, we also got to help preparing the balloon before the flight, and packing it afterwards. This was such a fun addition!

Absolutely amazing experience.
Even thought our luck wasn’t all that good and the weather as pretty bad. We stillt enjoyed the whole experience and were fascinated by what we got to see. It’s also very nice of them to compensate us with some extra fly time for the disappointing weather condition.
Couple things to not for those who r interested:
1, You do need to wake up very early, the meet up time for us was 5:15 in the morning, and we had to wake up before 4 am and drive one hour from Christchurch.
2, Get ready to do some work, every body chipped in during the set up and clean up before and after the fly, it’s a group job, so be ready to get your hands dirty. But there will be food and champagne in the end to award the hard work.

Had an amazing ride past the snowy alps and across farmland. Beautiful scenery, great guide, lots of fun. Totally worth the early start to see the sunrise. Loved every moment from take off to landing and the champagne and food afterwards. Michael told a brief history of ballooning which was interesting. A must do activity.

Mountain resort featuring skiing & snowboarding, plus restaurants, a store & gear storage.
The best ski field to go with family especially with kids. Very friendly and helpful staff. We went and there were lots of snow. We enjoyed our time there. The drive was absolutely stunning. Definitely worth it.

Really nice Mountain, just a bit small if you’re used to mountains outside of New Zealand, and the weather is seldom as good as you’d like it to be. Being this small means there is only 3 lifts, and as soon as the number of people rises, the queues get bigger as well. Friendly staff, night ski, best snow in the area, still make it one of the best mountains in New Zealand though.

Mt Hutt is a great place for skiing, beautiful runs, comfortable lifts, very very short wait times to get on the lifts.
On the snow, skiing itself is excellent.
They need to put more work in with the customer service area & staff where lift tickets & ski hire is purchased. I had to wait over 30minutes to get served. The staff in the hire area & on the snow we’re very friendly & helpful.
The cafeteria is overpriced, half the food advertised was not available. I would recommend bringing your own.
All in all this is a great place, I’ll be back here again

And the snow was wet heavy and rocky hopefully there's more when we return 🤞

Great commercial ski field with all the amenities one needs for a great day in the mountains. Comfortable chair lifts, lots of terrain for different levels. Only issue is it gets extremely busy in the weekends when the snows good and the top car park fills up early!

The road seemingly goes on forever, with lots of sneaky grooving and 2 inch drop off ruts to discourage low profile tyre owners, while supporting the local mag and tyre repair crews. Eventually the view opens up, and you realise you are plop in the middle of what feels like the only elevation on the entire Canterbury plains. If you can contain yourself and your rear wheel drive car, and survive your way to the top, you are rewarded with building which seem a little dated, but we aren't there for the decor, or even the toilets. The snow is the draw card, or perhaps more honestly, the lifts that allow gravity, wax, and expensive graphics to slide human tubs of lard back down the mountain without the exertion of climbing back up. Many steep and consistent faces allow the wannabe snow sport aficionado to look deep within themselves, and face the fear of unrestrained diagonal freefall, while repeating the process immediately after inevitable failures.
Mt Hutt on two sticky spring days really helped level me up, and the board tech bloke with the long hair was/is a flaming legend. Quite liking this mountain midweek in spring.

Mount Hutt is a picturesque mountain located in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, and it offers an unforgettable experience for both adults and children alike. My recent visit with my children left us with lasting memories and a strong desire to return.
First and foremost, the skiing and snowboarding opportunities at Mount Hutt are exceptional. The well-maintained slopes cater to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced riders. The resort provides excellent facilities, including well-marked trails, reliable chairlifts, and knowledgeable instructors who are patient and attentive, making it an ideal destination for families. My children, who were relatively new to skiing, received excellent instruction and quickly gained confidence on the slopes.
The breathtaking scenery at Mount Hutt is truly awe-inspiring. As we glided down the slopes, we were surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks and sprawling alpine vistas. The clear blue skies and fresh mountain air enhanced our experience, creating a sense of tranquility and beauty that is hard to find elsewhere.
The resort itself is well-equipped with various amenities and services. The ski rental shop provided top-quality equipment, and the lodge offered cozy accommodation and delicious meals to refuel after an active day on the mountain. The staff members were friendly, accommodating, and always ready to assist with any requests.
Mount Hutt's family-friendly atmosphere was evident throughout our visit. The dedicated kids' zone provided a safe and entertaining space for younger visitors, complete with gentle slopes and play areas. The resort also organized regular events and activities tailored to children, ensuring that they had a fantastic time both on and off the slopes.
Overall, Mount Hutt exceeded our expectations as a family-friendly winter destination. The combination of excellent skiing, breathtaking scenery, and attentive service made our visit truly memorable. Whether you're a seasoned skier or a first-time visitor, Mount Hutt is sure to provide an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

there’s plenty of ski lifts no gondolas though.
worth it to make a 1/2 day or full day

If you want to go skiing in the winter and even on weekends, suggest you should arrive here around 7:30 otherwise the parking lots will be full soon.
It’s dangerous to drive up with snow chains as there is no any fence around the road.

A bit over $150 for day pass and ski hire. Great mountain that overlooks the Canterbury planes on a good day. Lots of room on the mountain, great areas to eat and keep warm, if you don't Snowboard or Ski you can hang out near the fire place and have a good time. Caters for all from beginner easy snopes and experienced runs to parents waiting inside having coffee and cake!

Caroline Bay Association, an amusement park located in the South Island of New Zealand, is a beautiful and scenic spot that offers visitors a beach with stunning views, an aviary to explore birds, a playground for kids and various trails to hike. It's situated next to a rollerblade rink that serves as a parking lot and has nearby facilities. However, what makes it particularly special is its penguin nesting site at Caroline Bay beach where penguins migrate ashore every evening for nesting.
I visited Caroline Bay for the Rock n Hop festival. Which was brilliant. It should be noted that if you want to put your children into the fancy dress competition you have to register online the week before.
Anyway Caroline Bay is worth a visit any time with the new adventure playground, aviary, rose garden, fountain pond, then stairs up so that you can view the whole area. Timaru is a place that actually takes advantage of and uses the natural lay of the land to get the best views with amenities.

The Caroline Bay Carnival ran 26 Dec-7th January and this was my first time visiting. We drove down from Christchurch with a car club. The kids lived the rides, there were a heap of carinval activity/game booths that were really reasonably priced cimpared to other fairs/galas and a lot of food choices. We also visited the brand new play ground which was a huge hit with our 10 year old daughter. She loved the ninja course! We also went on the permanent train ride, a bargain at $2pp for 3 loops (although The eldest daughters sensitive ears didn't like the screetchy wheels on the corners) ice cream kiosk was next level amazing, the kids had a Copenhagen cone (2 scoops, whipped cream, sauce and sprinkles or you could have nuts) Next time would like to have longer to enjoy the entertainment stage which we didn't get to. We will be back next year!

Although this place was setting up early when visiting for the New Year for there yearly festivities its a great place, plenty parking & watching out to the beach. And big playground for children. Loved visiting. Weather let us down it was teaming down with rain, but it was a good visit.

Such a beautiful place. A kind lady, who'd pointed out a seal to me first, helped me to get there, while I was out in Timaru, in an attempt to lose myself in nature. She showed me the area of the beach where penguins come at night to have their little beach party. I could see tiny footprints which I hoped belonged to a penguin or two.
A path along the beach led to the cliffs, oh, those beautiful cliffs. A bridge above a railway track and a tiny unused lighthouse were the sights that greeted me there. I do wish the lighthouse was open for the public. It'd give an even greater perspective, I think.
A small path from the cliff led onto another cozy part of the bay. A wide selection of small to large round pebbles could be found there. Another bridge that extended into the sea gave an absolutely graceful view of the sea. The sea changed its colors from light blue to shades of green and dark blue. Altogether, it was a peaceful and beautiful day out there, in the midst of nature.
Hope to see some penguins next time!

West Coast Wildlife Centre is a family-friendly wildlife center with kiwi birds on display, a glacier attraction & guided tours. The center has been praised for its high quality of care for the animals and its excellent education programs.
Best coffee in Franz Josef!!!!!!!
Awesome staff, great food and a lovely morning spent amongst the Kiwi and Tuatara.
We were lucky as kids got to go free with every paying adult due to school holidays.
Money well spent.

Really great experience and a Franz Josef must do.
The conservation work that this facility does for kiwis is fantastic. Would strongly recommend doing the behind the scenes tour, even if there are no chicks - it's super interesting.
Our guide Devon was so passionate and informative, he's a credit to the centre. The kiwi in the nocturnal room have a great setup. The female is sleepy and relaxed, whilst the male runs around quite happily.
They are much easier to see once your eyes have adjusted, but if you still can't spot them, staff will point them out under a red light torch.
The tuatara are surprisingly really cute, and their history and origin is really interesting. Got to see a baby one which was really sweet, and the rest in the main pen are fun to observe.
Staff excellent and friendly - would recommend a visit.

The two Kiwis were amazing to watch and mesmerizing!! They were super active and easy to see! We watched them for like 25 min straight!!
The rest of the museum / centre was so awesome and I learned so much ! Don’t listen to the bad reviews because we spent 1.5 hours there. Also great gift shop to support the kiwis ! Thanks for my favorite animal encounter experience in New Zealand :)

The experience was exciting and informative! Its great to see such great conservation efforts from this wildlife centre. We got the VIP pass and were shown around by Devin. He was very polite and knowledgeable and taught us alot about the excellent programs going into saving the endangered kiwis as well as a history into them.
I would highly recommend going to see the Kiwis in the morning! We heard from Devin that youre much more likely to see them then as this is when they're eating and most active and he was right! We came a second time and saw a kiwi eating, play in their water, and walk around the enclosure.
We were also lucky enough to see a tuatara up close during our VIP tour and gave it a *very* gentle pet on his back.
Would definitely recommend!

Having read some of the reviews, we were in two minds about whether to visit the West Coast Wildlife Centre. I’m SO glad we did! It was quiet when we visited, so we were the only people in the Kiwi room, and we ages happily watching the two very active kiwis. Having seen kiwis previously in another location behind glass, having no glass barrier between them and us was AMAZING! Just a low fence between us and them. It was also great to know that the two we saw would shortly be released into the wild - added an extra dimension to know that our entry fee was actively going towards their conservation! We felt we more than got value for money (we even went back for a second look before leaving - and had we wanted to, the ticket allowed us to return the next day for another look). We also loved seeing the tuataras and learning all about the kiwi conservation, Predator Free 2050, the glaciers and the local community. I feel as though some of the previous reviewers have been unrealistic in their expectations. Go expecting to need to engage with more than just seeing a kiwi! It’s about much more than that!

Very cool to be able to see 2 kiwi without glass. They swapped day and night inside so the kiwi are active at our daytime.
Very friendly staff. We came back a second time and enjoyed both days. The shop has nice things, as has the cafe.
If you are interested in kiwi and tuatara or their breeding programmes, we recommend taking the VIP tour.

In a word, outstanding. After reading some reviews, I was in two minds whether to bother with this attraction. I’m glad I did though. The ability to get up and close to a kiwi, with no glass in between, was fantastic. Our encounter with a kiwi in the wild on Stewart Island lasted no more than 30 seconds. Here we were no more than a metre or so away for 20 mins+, you are so close you can hear them rummaging though the leaves. Well worth it.
Ian Glass — Google review
Pretty expensive for what it was but may be your only chance to peep a kiwi. The kiwi habitat was extremely dark so if you have issues with night vision and need glasses in low light conditions I HIGHLY suggest bringing them. No photos or videos of the kiwis are allowed.
I'm glad I saw them but my fave was the tuatara! Such a unique reptile. Unlike lizards they have a vertical pupil which I thought was cool as heck (they have other amazing characteristics but I don't want to spoil it for anyone!).
The rest of the place was educational and mostly related to the animals present in alpine NZ, pest species threatening the alpine regions and the various properties and presentations of glacial ice. Great place to nerd out.
Cee — Google review
Very cool that you get to see the rarest species of kiwi! The two chicks that had recently gotten big enough to be brought up to the observation area were very cute, active, & easy to watch. I’m so glad this important work is being done to breed these endangered birds and reintroduce them to the wild. There’s a really good chance to see tuatara as well here. Worth the price for sure.

An educationally meaningful conservation center provides an opportunity to get up close with the rarest Rowi kiwi birds. Currently, the conservation center has two of these birds, whose lively and busy figures are truly adorable in the dark. For ecology enthusiasts, whether as a backup plan for glacier hiking cancellations or a special arrangement to visit, it is highly recommended.

Best experience with Kiwi we have had, literally so close, I could watch them for hours and listen to their wee noises. Also not too busy like other places who house kiwi. Bit on the dearer side but knowing the money is going towards conservation of native NZ animals makes it worth it. Very friendly staff, and very cool that they can come in with a red light to see the kiwi even clearer.

Had a wonderful hour listening to Steve at the VIP tour, he is so passionate and the staff are all so lovely! It might not feel worth an extra $20 for everyone but seeing as it goes to saving the kiwis it feels more than worth every cent. Also super to actually see two kiwi birds running around, and learn that they get the zoomies when they’re excited! 🥹 Very impressed with the team’s work and knowledge, 10/10.
Jennifer Caust — Google review
Not that interesting the one and only kiwi seemed to be suffering from zoochosis ie repetitive behaviour pacing in the same spots. Understand that the enclosure needs to be dark to make the animal think it's night time so that visitors can actually sort of see a kiwi albeit not very easily.
I should have done a bit more research re what the place actually is I thought the title indicated a cross section of animals from new Zealand rather than just the two species.
So in conclusion yes great to just about see a kiwi but having only the two species made for a disappointing visit

I've been to heaps of kiwi exhibits in NZ and this is by far the best! The kiwi room has dim light for the health of the birds. The Church of the Good Shepherd is a small, picturesque stone church overlooking Lake Tekapo and holding interdenominational services. It is also known for its lupin gardens.
Stunning! If you can, time your visit for sunrise or early morning - even if you don't get lucky with bright colors, you're more likely to have the place to yourself and get good lighting.
Be aware that the church is only open for services on Sundays, so you won't be able to go in the rest of the time. You can look in the back window to get a sense of the inside, and the surroundings are gorgeous enough that it doesn't feel like missing out.

How can you not give this location 5 stars. Beautiful views across Lake Tekapo with Mount Cook in the background. Beautiful old Church perfectly positioned to take advantage of Gods creation. Views just as good looking out from the inside. We visited in October and sky was blue, Mountains still covered in thick snow and the water was crystal clear. Just beautiful.

I recently had the pleasure of attending the Church of the Good Shepherd located in the picturesque South Island of New Zealand, and I was completely blown away by the experience. From the moment I stepped foot on the grounds, I felt a sense of warmth and welcoming energy that is truly unique to this church.
The exterior of the church is stunning, nestled against the breathtaking backdrop of the Southern Alps and overlooking the serene turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo. The peacefulness and natural beauty of the surroundings are in perfect harmony with the sanctuary’s calming interior, with its tranquil color scheme and ethereal stained glass windows.
The church has a long and rich history, having been built in 1935 to serve the needs of the growing sheep-farming community. It has since become a well-known tourist attraction and a beloved spot for weddings and other celebrations. Despite its fame, the Church of the Good Shepherd remains a humble and welcoming place of worship, open to all who seek a moment of peace and reflection.
The congregation is warm and friendly, and the services are both meaningful and accessible. I appreciated the way prayers and hymns in the Maori language were also integrated into the service, honoring the indigenous culture of the land.
Aside from its beautiful interior and meaningful services, the Church of the Good Shepherd also offers visitors an opportunity to learn about the church's history and importance to the surrounding community. There are informative plaques that guide you through the history of the church and its significance to the area.
Overall, my experience at the Church of the Good Shepherd was truly unforgettable. It is a place of beauty, peace, and significance, and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone visiting or living in the South Island of New Zealand. Whether you seek a moment of reflection, spiritual guidance, or simply a beautiful and tranquil place to visit, this church is a must-see destination.

Have always wanted to visit and photograph this beautiful church. I was not disappointed. We arrived in the afternoon and there were lots of tourists however they move pretty quickly. Patience is needed as there are some people after the best Instagram shot! The church is closed however on a Sunday it's open for a service. No photography inside however take as many outside and surrounds. This church was so worth the visit and the surrounds are breathtaking. The water is so very blue. A must to visit and stay one night at least.

Gorgeous place to stop for a picture of a quaint 1930s stone church on the southern shore of the BEAUTIFUL Lake Tekapo. It is not possible for a tourist to go into the church typically. The church is right off of the highway, easily marked and readily found. Highly recommended stop!

Facing the beautiful Lake Tekapo , there stands an old stone built church , The Church of the Good Shepherd . It was built in 1925 and it's still in good condition. I was there in March 2023, couldn't see the beautiful flowers around the church, but the scenery of the lake and the stone beach is still a nice place to take a lot of photos.

Amazing location, especially with the backdrop. After seeing countless photos of the night sky, I thought I would catch a glimpse of it.
Mother nature can be both beautiful and ugly. I was at Tekapo for 2 nights but it had been gloomy for the past 2 nights. Nonetheless on the third day, I got to catch a glimpse of the reflection on the lake which was stunning.
Overall it was worth the trip and I'll definitely be back to Tekapo for the night sky.

As pretty as the pictures, but get here early if you want to take unobstructed photos. Tourists in their bus loads turn up once the gates to the church open… Unfortunately stars didn’t line up behind the church while we were there. Nonetheless, can get some great views of Lake Tekapo during the day.

Amazing view and place for travel. Best kept and maintained natural monuments. The each location and picture frame is memorable. Must visit, if traveling New Zealand.

A nice stop at your walk around the lake. I wouldn't come to the place just because of the church, but it's definitely worth of few pictures, if you are already at the spot.
No entrance ticket to see the church needed.

Visited this little historical church while staying in Lake Tekapo during summer. Crowded with tourists ( we are one of them). Worth a visit if you are in town but nothing too special about it as it’s small and not able to enter for visiting purpose. There are also direct access to the lake through this area with plenty of parking space

Very beautiful church surrounded by Lake Tekapo & plenty of Lupin flowers around during spring time. 💐💐💐
Would get crowded sometimes during peak time, but managed to capture couple of lovely photos infront.
Free entry to the compound around outside church but not inside church.
Plenty of free srreet parking around.
Highly recommended to stop by on the way to Mount Cook from Burkes Pass.

I have always loved visiting this place.
It was my third time but still feels great!
The only disappointing thing is that it’s mostly closed, so you are just gonna have outside experience. Maybe you can peep through the windows at the back.
Plenty of lupins during spring which makes it even more beautiful

Plenty of parking, but the place is a zoo. The church is pretty of course but you are going to get a million “influencers in the wild” just posing and trying to take the perfect shot. Frankly seems overly crowded given what you can see or do there. Spend 5 minutes if in the area but don’t go out of way.
Lake Tekapo is a minuscule settlement situated at the southern tip of Lake Tekapo in the interior part of South Island, New Zealand. The region comprises five settlements within the scarcely inhabited Mackenzie Basin and had a population of 558 people as per the 2018 census. One can follow a three-day itinerary starting from Garden City to Mount Cook Village through Lake Tekapo, where they can witness splendid stargazing activities.

Nestled on a private mountaintop, the University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory is a renowned research facility equipped with various telescopes, instruments, and detection devices. Visitors can access the observatory by driving or hiking up to the top for a fee. The panoramic view from this vantage point offers breathtaking sights of Lake Tekapo and the surrounding mountain ranges, making it one of the most stunning locations in New Zealand.
Loved it ..great Night Sky experience, 😀Bus driver was amazing he had a laughing with his information that alone was worth the trip❤️Then we went up the next day on our own what a beautiful view 🐝🌻

We’ve been trying to come here and it is always closed. We were in luck they were open until 3pm. There is a $8 fee per vehicle to go in. It was a gloomy day the snow is about to pour from the mountain but it must be a beautiful view on a sunny weather. At a distance the snowy mountains are so beautiful.

Great view, easily accessed and free, except for the $8 parking fee. The cafe at the top serves good sandwiches and coffee too

I initially wasn't going to bother visiting, initially thinking the $8 road user fee was a lot to simply drive up a road! But I ultimately decided to, and am very glad I did...the views of the lakes and mountain ranges are absolutely stunning and amongst the very best on offer in the South Island (if not New Zealand). Almost quite surreal. Now I can see why they charge, it is definitely worth the money! Definitely recommend a visit.

Stunning views over Lake Tekapo & Lake Alexandrina. Every time we visit we find it awesome. It's a shame though what was a free activity during the day, started to charge. Started at $5 for your car & this last visit it was $8. Perhaps if you're able it's best to walk up the other side!

:) loved the drive in and up, down and around.
Easy to get to.. entrance fee: NZD8/ car. Card only.
Looks over the wide landscape. Very freeing to see it from top!

A nice hike in Lake Tekapo area. Fun to have a cafe and observatory at the top. Not really scenic until you near the top, and not much variety of terrain

Do not go here without calling this number. Sometimes if they are close to if they don’t have staff. It’s best place to visit when you are visiting lake tekapo. Normally 50 to 100 cars returns back from the check post if they close early, this people don’t understand the feeling of visitors for not allowing them to go at mt John.

Perfectly beautiful viewing point.. NZD 8 / car, can drive to the peak… so beautiful 👍

You can either walk from Lake Tekapo or take your car and pay a $8 per vehicle toll. Either way you will get a breathtaking view of Lake Tekapo and Lake Alexandrina and the non-describing blue water of both the lakes. Got a little café on top also which has some good food, smoothies and picnic benches.

Its a really lovely view but ffs leave the toilets open......paid $8 to get in for what??? The Cafe was closed and we were aware of that but why lock the toilets, my wife is pregnant and needs to go pretty regularly at moment and its a long bumpy road back down the hill to get back to Tekapo!!! We seen multiple people trying to get into the toilets and seemed very let down.

Pay for 8 dollar per vehicle to come up here to have a good top view of the whole Lake Tekapo and its surrounding. For me, it’s worth it. There are a maximum car entry at one time so might have to queue for awhile.

had to wait at the bottom for room In the carpark up top as there are limited parks , $8 to pay to go up the drive. but it was worth the wait and the $. veiw was amazing. cafe was beyond our budget, very popularplace.

Spectacular views and worth the effort on a good day. We had a wait to get up to the top, and there is an $8 charge. If you are keen you can walk - but would be very steep

You don’t need an Apple Vision Pro to get an immersive panoramic view of “Middle Earth”. :) The view up here is so much more vibrant and unique than many other easily accessible tourist spots in NZ. Costs $8 per-car to enter, cash only! In peak season though you will likely need to wait quite a while at the front gate. “One car out one car in” says on the toll post. We waited about 20 minutes for entry at around noon on Feb 9, 2024.

Fox Glacier Guiding offers year-round guided Heli Hikes and Ice Climbing on the West Coast's largest and less crowded glacier. The experience begins with a safety briefing and getting fitted out with equipment before taking a short but amazing helicopter flight to the glacier. Once there, visitors are greeted by knowledgeable guides who lead them on a 3-hour walk around the ice, teaching them how to put crampons on and providing an informative experience.
I’m speechless. Glacier hiking is the best thing I’ve done in NZ and I live here. If you are hesitant (like me) to spend big money on activities then this is where I’d bite the bullet and DO IT.
It is much cooler than sky diving.
You spend 2-3 hours on the ice. Passang was a fantastic and relaxed guide.

Absolutely phenomenal!!!
We did a heli-hike on Fox Glacier, and loved every second. All of the staff were incredibly helpful, and our guide on the glacier was Fiona. She was SUCH a wonderful guide, incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, taking us all over the glacier, providing context and facts along the way. We were on the glacier for 3 hours, but it went by so quick. The scenery was breathtaking, and it was honestly like being on another planet. The helicopter ride there and back was also incredibly fun, and all in all was worth every penny. It may seem quite expensive, but now I've done it, I would have paid double. If you are here, do yourself a favour and book. What an incredible experience!!!!

No words can really describe how amazing the Heli-hike trip was. Certainly not cheap but I would not hesitate to do it again. Only a few minutes up in the helicopter, I was nervous as never been in a helicopter before but it was no problem. Guides Jack and Reece were helpful and knowledgeable. Loved every minute of it

Definitely one of the most exceptional experiences I’ve had in New Zealand and in general.
I wasn’t sure before whether this tour would be worthwhile given the not-so-low budget price. But it was worth every cent!
Expect spectacular views, insights into glaciers, and some blue ice if you’re lucky! Our guide Kevin was very knowledgeable, attentive and kind, making sure all of us had a fantastic experience.
We got so lucky with the weather. Do plan enough time to wait for good weather in Fox, just to make sure you get to experience the flight and hike to the fullest!
Kat Klein — Google review
*Summary - if you only do one paid activity in NZ, a heli-hike to a glacier is it. However whilst ice time may be up to the advertised 3hrs, you should expect the actual hiking time to be a lot less.
*Long story -
Friendliness of staff and level of safety is top notch.
We were the first of the morning group to arrive onto the ice, then from there it took us another 45 minutes before we got moving (time waiting for second Heli, everyone to put on their crampons and go through safety again). The guide has to spend time cutting the ice to make it easier to walk on (understandable but again eats away into your hike time).
The 'hike' itself is easy but your time will be very dependent on other people in the group (some are slow walkers and some will strike 20 different poses for the camera before the whole group can move on). We had 9 in our morning group and a little disheartened to see that the 11.50am slot only had 2 people! Next time I would ask re group size to see if we could change slots (especially given that it is really quiet at the moment.) Or might be worthwhile upgrading to the other hike options if waiting on other people isn't your thing.
I did the Franz Josef hike 7 years ago and personally preferred it (felt it was more fun, faster paced) but things are likely to have changed by now. Whether you do Fox or Franz though you will be doing something crazily unique.
Spend a few more days in Fox/Franz and book your hike early on because your trip could be cancelled / rescheduled due to bad weather.

A once in a lifetime experience.
We got lucky with a break in the weather for our tour this morning and I'm so happy that we did.
The staff were brilliant and made sure we were safe at all times but went out of their way to show us all the cool features of the glacier.
Highly recommended doing this tour.

The tour are highly dependent on weather, cloud & mist at the mountains.
Initinally we booked on Saturday and then due to thick cloud our session got rescheduled.
We went for the 930am session. Started of with detailed safely briefings.
Jacket, boots, backpack are all provided.
We are then transported to a nearby helipad.
We hiked for almost 4hrs and have some great chances to visit different kind of glacier formation & even entered the crevasse.
Highly recommended for a once a lifetime tour 👍👍👍

A unique once-in-a-lifetime experience!
My wife and I did the 11.50 am heli-hike with our guide Flavia on Saturday 2 Sep 2023. What a day it turned out to be.
Sarah had been very helpful and courteous when we did the booking on phone. It was nice to meet her in person.
From checking onwards, everything went well and smooth- done in a friendly but professional way. They provide everything which is needed - socks, shoes, jackets, trousers…..even sunglasses!! Too good.
The weather God was kind too - it was actually warm on the glacier and we had bright sunshine all through.
It will certainly be one of the memorable days of my life. Thanks to the excellent team at Fox Glacier Guiding Company.
I would highly recommend this experience to anyone.

This was touch and go as the weather almost meant a cancellation.
There is a briefing after 15min of waiting then after about 25-30min you get on a bus. Some waiting to get on the helicopter too
But then wow wow wow, the ride up itself is amazing, you see the glacier appear through the clouds.
We spent 2.5h up on the glacier being shown around with a guide who was fabulous and who used his ice pick to make paths for us. Went into a small alcove and into a small crevice, also got to try a fresh stream of glacier water.

We had such a wonderful heli hike experience with these guys! Whilst the lack of tourism hasn't been great for the area, we were blessed as it meant we went on the tour with just the two of us 🎉 We arrived, checked in, watched some informative safety videos, got into our kit and made our way to the heli pad. From there we were taken on a 5 minute helicopter flight into the glacier where our guide/Sherpa, Passang (from Nepal), greeted us. He taught us how to put our crampons on and proceeded to take us on a 3 hour walk around the ice. It was breathtaking and he had no hesitation answering any of our questions.
If you're considering which company to go with for your tour, we couldn't recommend this experience highly enough!
Ruby K — Google review
The Heli-Hike was by far the best things we’ve done in New Zealand!
You’ll start by being checked in and then your group will be given a safety briefing and fitted out with your equipment before being transferred a short drive to the helicopter. That’s when the fun starts and you take a short but amazing flight to the Glacier.
All the staff we encountered (Jenna, Cam, Stretch, Moss) were great at their job and it was clear they love it! Moss, our guide was hilarious and made the experience even better!
The walk on the glacier was mind blowing, better than expected and worth every cent, we’d 100% do this experience again!! Do this, don’t second guess it!

A once in a lifetime experience!
If you are in the area, go for it.
Recommended to book in advance, cause it's very popular! Check the weather forecast before you book, cause you want to end up up there on a sunny day, rather than a hazy or foggy day.
Don't forget sunscreen, sunglasses and cold weather gear.
No toilets up there of cause, so be prepared to take some toilet paper with you to have a sit down...with the most stunning views;)

One of the best tours we ever had in New Zealand. Flo, our guide, was very knowledgeable and shared many interesting facts about the Alpine with us. She was also highly skilled and took great care of us during our Heli-Climb experience. Even though it was our first attempt at it, we had lots of fun throughout, knowing that we are in great hands. Hillary also gave us great assurance prior to bookings and answered all our queries and questions. Her encouragement and assurance also put our worries aside to go for the Heli-climb experience. It was definitely a great decision made. Thank you so much Fox Galcier Guiding! Highly recommended 👍👍

Heli-hiking on Fox was an incredible experience: Fortunate to have near perfect conditions and the best possible guide. Cam was an exceptional tour guide, and as an ex-kayak guide, I can say he truly went above and beyond for us. He was fun and friendly, incredibly knowledgeable and able to convey scientific information concisely but in the most understood terminology. Give that guy a raise! Thanks Cam, and thanks team for providing an unforgettable experience.

This is one of the best experience throughout our NZ South Island trip. The weather for the day that we signed up was cloudy and we were unable to fly, and decided to extend our stay at Fox and rearrange our schedule so that we could get the best experience in the best weather. It was definitely worth it.
We were giving safety briefing, waterproof jackets, thick socks, boots, and a backpack for our own belongings. It’s best to carry light so my friends and I only brought along our winter jacket (which we didn’t use as we it was getting warmer as we hike), sunglasses (useful as the sunlight reflects on the glacier), gloves and hair tie. Also, the helicopter seat arrangement depends on your + your belonging’s weight, so you might get to sit at the front seat with the pilot if you are the lightest in the group. As we came in group of 3, I sat behind my 2 friends that got the front seat. Still happy I got to be in their heli selfie pic.
Our guide for that day was Cam. He was passionate with his job, and you could ask him anything, anything at all including his personal life 🤣 he said. Hence, it was fun and one of the participants asked if the glacier could be eaten and he knocked off some and gave to us to have a bite. We could tell he really loves his job, and we wished the glacier hike experience was longer so we could get to know more about the glacier.
All in all, this is a weather dependent activity and we had the best experience with the sunny day, earliest hiking slot, our glacier-passionate and handsome guide Cam.

Was initially booked to do the heli hike at Franz Josef but due to bad weather it got cancelled fortunately we managed to secure a booking at Fox Glacier Guiding. Did our trip in March and opted for a morning hike hoping the weather would hold up for us. Apparently 60% of trips get cancelled due to how quickly the weather changes. So even if you have a booking you may not get the chance to fly up for the heli hike.
We stayed at an Airbnb called The Pod with mountain views in Fox Glacier hosted by Kirsty which had the best sunset!
Our heli hike briefing kicked off at 0750HRS and was very well delivered by our super knowledgeable and professional guide Jake.
Hopped on the helicopter at 0830HRS. The flight up was quick and smooth in the morning. It was super thrilling with awesome views even for someone who is afraid of heights and flying in general; I felt very safe on the helicopter. Definitely a must do in NZ. Once in a lifetime experience not to be missed!
Spent about 3hours hiking on the glacier with Jake hacking away at the ice to help make the route friendlier. Jake was also passionately educating us about everything from A to Z about how the different ice formations are formed to how it has been retreating due to climate change.
All in all a 10/10 experience!

Sensational trip up to the glacier with a 3 hour long hike exploring various nooks and crannies on the glacier. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience to remember for a very long time. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable. The gear you get supplied with is in excellent condition and saves the headache of travelling with bulky cold weather gear. Thank you for an exceptional experience.

100% recommend the heli hiking tour. Our guide Ivar was friendly and knowledgeable. The team was professional and courteous. Weather can be unpredictable so it’s best to have flexibility in your schedule when booking.

Embarking on the Heli Hike with Fox Glacier Guiding was a true adventure, heightened by our fantastic guide, Kevin. His wealth of knowledge on the glacier, hiking, and climbing added depth to the experience. We even got hands-on, creating ice steps and anchoring in the glacier—an unforgettable touch.
The cherry on top was the fact that it was our very first helicopter flight, making the brief 5-minute ride to the top all the more special. The panoramic view of the glacier and valley is nothing short of breathtaking.
Luck was on our side as the trip wasn't canceled, despite prior days facing weather challenges. Do make sure to book tickets well in advance since the book tends to be fully booked in the touristic season.

The Hooker Valley track in Mount Cook National Park is a 5-km walking trail that leads to Hooker Lake and provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Additionally, hikers can enjoy a beautiful drive by Lake Pukaki after completing the hike. The trail begins at White Horse Hill Campground and covers 10 km (6.2 miles) with an elevation gain of 80 meters (262 feet).
Its an awesome hike which almost everyone can do. It takes 3 hours total to complete the hike. The view is amazing throughout as you make your way through twist, turns and 3 suspension bridges. Make sure to apply your sunscreen as most of the walkway is not under shade. There are heaps of places where you can stop and click amazing pictures. There is one public toilet along the way which is i believe situated close to the end. I haven't hiked in a long time but still found the hike pretty easy.
The hike ends with you in front of the lake and majestic mount cook.

Great easy track! Does require some level of fitness, but great views of Mt Cook! Pretty wide trail that is well maintained. Be aware it does get pretty busy, there is essentially no shade on the track, and 2/3 days it is cloudy and you can't see the mountain. Beyond the second bridge/ near the bathrooms are great views of Mt Cook if you don't want to complete the entire track.

This is a must do trek in NZ and it's VERY busy because of that. Go early and offseason if you want more seclusion. Easy walk, views are unreal the whole way. I especially loved the bridge crossings, amazing experience. Very muddy and icy this time of year so hiking boots are recommended.

Brilliant walk for anyone with some level of fitness. Always plenty of people but worth doing it. The views are absolutely spectacular. Can be finished in 3 hours but you want to give at least half a day if you want to stop admire the views and take some good photos. Must do.

great views but quite rainy all the way, and rained started getting heavier on the way back. we went yesterday and the bridge is closed today because of the weather. the trail is pretty easy and quite flat, but as it was rainy, there were many puddles and the track was quite muddy and a bit slippery. the summit view of the lake was very pretty, and there was some ice even though it is summer. we took around 3 hours including return to complete the track, excluding some time spent on the summit taking pictures etc.
overall: very good, but the weather was quite unpleasant, but that’s no fault of the track

Wow, whatever time of year you visit, it's always breathtaking. It's a great track for all ages and abilities. There are 3 swing bridges that might take a bit of a deep breath to cross but they are very sturdy and safe. Take layers as the weather can change very quickly.

Really beautiful walk and very well maintained trail, some sensational views in the first few km
Quite a busy trail, but not crowded in June
When you eventually arrive at the lake the silence is broken by people constantly trying to launch the biggest rock they can through the frozen lake.
Bit sad we can't just enjoy the natural beauty without feeling the need to smash things

Such a beautiful walk. I was there back in May so the sky was very grey with an overcast so the ground was a little muddy nut no problem if you have hiking shoes. There are views along the journey which is nice if you like to take short breaks otherwise wait til the end for an amazing lake.

No wonder this is one of the most popular walking tracks in NZ! It's fairly easy, roundtrip took us less than 3h, including a few small stops. The views are gorgeous, of course. We weren't very lucky with the weather - Mt Cook was nearly entirely hidden by clouds/fog, but the hike was very enjoyable nonetheless. Quite busy, too. Would suggest going there very early morning to avoid the crowds
Evelīna — Google review
Oh my goodness!!!!! Stunning walk. We started at about 2 pm and it really wasn’t super busy. There were people but not a problem. Walk is not too difficult for the average person. My husband has a walking disability but he completed it slowly. He was determined to do so. 3 incredible swinging bridges, a mixture of boardwalks, gravel walks, steps and small inclines. In total it took us 3 hours and that is allowing my husbands disability. It was very windy so be prepared for that. sometimes the gusts of wind are extremely strong, especially over the bridges.
Stunning views, all the way, and if you are lucky to have a clear Day, like we did, Mount Cook will be very visible. We were even fortunate enough to witness an avalanche on the mountain. Once you reach the end at the lake, you’ll be amazed by it. We saw icebergs in the water. A truly magical walk.
By the way, there is actually a toilet halfway along the track.

The highlight of coming all the way to Mount Cook. Get here early, peak times are 11-2. I hear the evening light is beautiful too. It's an easy hike but in the heat is rather long, and feels busy amongst the throng of tourists

Not too difficult a walk if you take it easy. The views of Mt. Cook are breathtaking and the lake you come to at the end of the walk takes you by surprise. You round a corner to see icebergs floating in front of you. Really enjoyed it!

easy trail for most people. not suitable for push or wheel chairs. great scenery. it's approx 10km in total it took us 2.5 hrs walking time. take a picnic for the end so you can sit and admire the glacier. there are 3 swing bridges. we were passed by 1200 people on our way in and out so a well used trail.

The best short walk in NZ! 10km return will take you around 3 hours return to walk it. If you are not up to the full 10km I highly recommend going to just past the second swing bridge. Just past the second bridge you will see awesome views of MT Cook and there is also a toilet and picnic tables there for a sit down. Great walk. Track gets a little busy so go mid week or perhaps off peak if you don’t like crowds.

The whole way to here was so beautiful, it was a great drive. The track is not hard at all, can be finished in 3 hrs. The lake was not completely frozen that day, but it was still fun. I was really stunned by the magnificent landscape here.

Good workout. Great views along the track. Best to visit before 9am as it gets really crowded after.
Bring snacks and water and have a picnic at the glacier view point!
MH S — Google review
Excellent winter walk! Lots of snow and ice, and the sky was crystal clear. The roads had been cleared to the car park, but still bring snow chains in case they hadn't been.
Be warned in winter - the snow gets compacted, so can be really slippy (especially on the stairs and inclines) so wear appropriate shoes (not trainers!!!) and maybe bring hiking poles for extra support. The weather can change super quickly, so layers are important, a torch and also keep to the path (even if the snow hides it a bit). Toilets at the start are usable but not pleasant - there are more toilets about half way to the lake.
Sarah Massey — Google review
Absolutely stunning walk! Not a difficult track, 3-4 hours. We went in July and there was snow on the ground but easy as underfoot. It was a mostly clear day, few patches of fog along the way up so be prepared for mixed temperatures. Beautiful views along the way, mountains, lakes, board walks, bridges. It's a great trip out for any age.
Lou McLeod — Google review
3 hour return hike. No need for special equipment or footwear (mostly gravel). Really busy on Sunday afternoon - but Monday was a lot quieter. No shade, would recommend a hat and sunscreen. Toilets available at the start and middle of the hike. Limited seating available at the end. Beautiful scenery the whole journey. Recommend packing water and some snacks.

This is the best trail I’ve ever done. 360 degree views throughout the trail. Mostly flat 10+ km walk with rewarding views and amazing three suspension bridges which makes you so satisfied and the lake in the end that elevates your overall experience. This will be one trail that I won’t mind doing again and again. Must visit for all the fitness levels.
Plenty of parking and well maintained restrooms with tap in the beginning and portable toilet midway.
Akash Yeleswarapu — Google review
For me, this was the nicest trail that I have walked at New Zealand. Full of different landscapes, beautiful views and few water objects to pass by on the way, this is really a beautiful walk that I believe that even children manage.
There are flashing toilets at the starting point with running water, and dry toilets somewhere in the middle of the hike, if there is a need to use them.
Don't get discouraged by a light rain, for example, you can still do it.
Jana Krištanová — Google review
Amazing view of mount cook, it’s suited for all fitness levels.
We went on an afternoon walk in early March, weather was amazing. It was about 10km return, and we took about 2 hours as we did a small jog the first part of the trail.
The trail is well maintained and easy to walk.
The suspension bridges were a great experience with unblocked views of the flowing river and the mountain. A must visit!
Yong Jing Yi — Google review
Easy trail that will take between 2 - 3 hours. Mostly flat with a couple of swingbridges to cross. The views along the entire trail are beautiful with mountains on both sites. This is probably one of the most popular trails in the country and as such I'd really recommend starting the trail as early as possible to avoid the crowds.
Despite there being a huge car park; by the time we returned from the trail people were having to park on the road leading up to the car park.
Would highly recommend completing this trail as the views really can't be beaten and you're fairly likely to hear the sound of avalanches in the mountains and if you're lucky enough you'll be able to see them!
There's also the final location of the trail, the front of the glacier lake. During spring large chunks of ice can be seen throughout the lake and it's a very unique spot to be able to reach with such a relatively simple walk.

The hike itself was just incredible, it is very hard to describe the feeling, it is just so impressive. If you are on the South Island this is a must visit. The hike in itself is mostly flat and quite easy, about 5km to the end and then you go back the same way. It does get hot if it is sunny so bring sunscreen or covering clothes as you are very exposed.
Just driving here also allows for some amazing views with plenty of scenic lookout points. Simply an incredible experience

Absolute gorgeous.
But as we are not use to doing long treks, my ankle aches during night even though i had a pair of trekking shoes. No complaints however. It was just worth the time and effort.

Beautiful walk to base of Mount Cook. On the walk you pass such amazing scenery. The walk includes many different types of underfoot terrains, grass, small and larger stones, stairs, wooden elevayed walkways, and cross 3 bridges. There are toilets in the car park at the start of the track and also toilets about two-thirds of the way to Mount Cook. There are several points on the way to stop, rest, and take in the awesome views. We were lucky to see icebergs in the lake at base of Mount Cook. It does get much colder there and there were two areas where there were some brief rain and snow flurries. I would take a waterproof jacket just in case. It took us 3 hours to go there spend some time and return, and the bridges are still only open set times on each day. I totally recommend this breathtaking trail.

This is a magnificent place which gives a great view of the New Zealand’s highest mountain, the Mount Cook and the glacier on the mountain range.
It is a 3 hour walk to back and forth. The trail is not too difficult but long, windy and so hot to walk. It is best if you can protect your self from the sun and the dust during the summer time. You will hardly find any shades on the trail.
There are three hanging bridges to cross and even an elderly person can walk on them as they are pretty secure and has hand rails.
Once you reach to the valley you can see amazing view of the mountain range and the glaciers. There are big rocks which have shades. You can sit relax and eat some food by the rocks.
There are toilets at the car park and at about middle of the trail. The parking is quite busy and you may have to park on the road before the car park.
We have not found any restaurants around this area.

Hooker Valley Track, Mt Cook National Park 7999, New Zealand
The Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park Visitor Centre is a must-visit destination, especially on a rainy day. It's more than just a visitor centre; it's like a museum and art gallery combined. The center showcases captivating Maori carvings, local artwork, and exhibitions that delve into the flora, fauna, and geography of the national park. The building itself is an attraction with its large picture window offering stunning views of Mount Aoraki.
Fascinating and informative stop after a stay at White Horse DOC camp. So much for adults and kids alike to learn about. Incredible photos, and beautifully laid out. So glad we stopped by!
Jenny Waenink — Google review
Very nice visitors center/museum. The staff was really helpful and gave good advice. The museum has enough things going on to be there for multiple hours. Everything is free to enter so this is definitely a place worth visiting if you got the time!
Julien van der waal — Google review
The park is amazing, very beautiful views good tracks and places where tonleave the car but there is a problem: the time (how long it will take to pass the track) that is written on the boards is not really correct because it was written that track "sealy tarns" will take about 3 hours to get to the view point and back but it took us around 4 and a half hours and I would not recommend u to go on that track if u have any even little afraidness of heights because the higher u get the more open this track becomes so it can be very hard, but the park itself is very beautiful especially when there are no clouds

Lovely walk, not too strenuous. Take your time. There's a toilet just under half way to the final stop. Lots of beautiful views along the way. Can get very sunny with limited shaded areas so if you're bringing kids / older people prepare for that with adequate gear.

The Aoraki Mt. Cook National Park Visitor Centre is the one of the most beautiful Visitor Information I have visited. This is not only an information center , this is also a museum of Mt. Cook. If you want to do some hiking in this area, this is a place you need to visit. The staff at the center are very helpful . You can get useful maps and information from here . A beautiful design of the building, with an amazing garden at the back of the centre. A wonderful experience at the centre .

Sadly the perfect tourist-trap.
Hoards of tourists and coaches.
And $25 to see the Hillary museum-you’ve got to be joking.
Avoid and look for coffee/food/history etc elsewhere.
The Mt Cook area is well worth visiting!
I did the Red Tarns walk-brilliant views and quite steep so not busy.
A win-win

So good! The majesty of Aoraki is really captured in the visitor centre. It rains a bunch so I’d recommend planning a few days in the area so you’re guaranteed a chance to see the mountains.

Love our experience here. The exhibit is amazing for a little information center tucked up in the corner. Wished we had more time, we would have spent more time reading up the exhibits.
Approach the counter if you have kids.
My kids love the activity sheet regarding being a Kiwi Ranger. 😊
Totally recommend as a must stop. 👍🏻

Great visitor center of the area! Very big and nice exposition of nature and climbing around Aoraki. If you are planining a multiday trip to mountains ask if you can speak with experienced local ranger to get relevant information. Visitor center itself has poor parking capacity.

good place to visit in poor weather, a bit busy when we came as it was raining, has a gift shop and an exhibit about the history of mount cook.

Great place to learn about the history and mythology of the area. There really is something for everyone: NZ's mountaineering history, geology, animal and plant exhibits, photography and artworks, rescue operations... plus a gift shop. Spent ages just in the little room where the photo is from. Definitely got my value for money ($0 entry but donations are accepted!)

Very informative place, talks about the history of the region and wildlife that lives around it, recommend dropping by if you happen to be around the area. Admission is free.
Lake Pukaki in the South Island is a stunning glacially-fed lake with milky-blue waters, offering breathtaking views of Mount Cook. The lake's beauty makes for a scenic drive with numerous spots to stop and take in its picturesque surroundings. Visitors can walk down closer to the lake and capture memorable photos of the awe-inspiring landscape.
Another massive and beautiful lake in the South Island, which makes for a very scenic drive. There are places where you can stop and walk down close to the lake.

Our coach passed beautiful Lake Pukaki on the way to Mount Cook, which became visible from quite a distance. The entire lake is an almost perfect and consistent aquamarine, from the glacial runoff silt.
Graham Tranter — Google review
It is worth it to visit it. The water is clear blue but quite cold so be ready for it. It is just a little bit warmer than Lake Tekapo (both of them are glacier lakes). We slept in a freedom campground and could go to swim from this place and as a bonus we had a great view on Mount Aoraki/Mount Cook. We can reccomend Lake and the freedom campground as well. But the camp is just for one night in the month.

Lake Pukaki is a mesmerizing glacial lake in New Zealand, renowned for its stunning turquoise waters and backdrop of snow-capped mountains. The scenery is truly breathtaking, offering a serene and picturesque escape. Whether you're into photography, hiking, or simply enjoying nature, Lake Pukaki is a must-visit destination. The vibrant colors and tranquil atmosphere make it a memorable experience for any traveler.

Lake Pukaki is a stunning natural wonder. Visiting at noon was perfect as the bright sunshine showcased the lake's incredible blue hues. It's a vast, pristine body of water that truly captivates with its beauty. I'm delighted that we made the choice to explore this remarkable lake; it's a memory to cherish.
High Country Salmon is a family-owned boutique salmon farm located near Twizel, New Zealand. They raise glacial mountain salmon in the hydro canal system, ensuring a short supply chain and the freshest salmon possible. Visitors can enjoy coffee and salmon-inspired food at the cafe, feed the salmon on the floating deck, purchase fresh salmon from the fish shop, or even catch their own.
Definitely worth the stop if you are passing through here. Lots of fresh sushi, sashimi and cooked meals. The sushi was incredibly fresh as you'd expect, generously packed with salmon and the chowder was tasty and hearty. We brought some items to takeaway and they packed them with ice. The beetroot cured salmon is exceptional and some of the best you'll taste but at $100 per kg it's pretty steep. Worth it for a splurge.

A great place to take kids for fishery education. This is a private farm and grow fresh water salmon in a glacier fed lake, so it's unique on its own. Kids love to feed salmon here, so it is worth doing. They do sell fresh salmon and all other salmon related products. See pictures and video for details.

Delicious high quality salmon!! I also prefer this one over Mt Cook Alpine Salmon. Sure they've got the views, but this little salmon farm offers way more. There's a café with tons of cabinet food and a gift shop with salmon products and other goodies. Food is reasonably priced and yummy!

We enjoy a visit to the Salmon Farm and always come away with some fresh salmon to enjoy at home. There's a good selection of salmon based deliciousness and some food without salmon. We enjoyed watching a little girl catch a big fat salmon. I'm sure her parents went home with it, having paid $30 per kg for the privilege.

This is a salmon farm . You can pay and fish here or have breakfast / lunch at the simple cafe . They only have limited items. We arrived at 1 pm, already many items of food have been sold out. They also have a shop for frozen salmon , smoke salmon and other seafood items. Good for a visit, especially after a long drive.
I think there are more rooms for improvement.

Pinkest juiciest salmon I’ve tasted. This salmon farm has a cafe, fresh frozen salmon shop and also viewing platforms to the farm where you can feed the fish for a donation. Had some sushi, took away some bellies for dinner and fed some fish. Very clean amenities and warm water taps was a plus for me. Wholesome stopover in my books.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at High Country Salmon near Twizel, and it was a delightful experience for my family and me. I would rate it 4 stars overall, and here's why:
First and foremost, the highlight of our meal was undoubtedly the amazing Salmon belly sashimi. The freshness and quality of the salmon were evident with each delicate bite. It practically melted in our mouths, and the flavors were simply exquisite. It's a must-try for any seafood lover.
We also ordered the Thai style Salmon Laksa, which was a flavorful and unique dish. The combination of salmon in a Thai laksa was a delightful twist, and the taste was delicious. The only minor drawback was that the laksa could have been a little warmer, but it didn't detract significantly from the overall experience.
One of the standout features of High Country Salmon is the opportunity to go fishing for your own salmon. It's a fantastic option for those looking to engage in an interactive and fun experience during their visit. The staff were not only friendly but also helpful, making the whole experience even more enjoyable.
Overall, High Country Salmon near Twizel is well worth a visit, especially for families and seafood enthusiasts. The Salmon belly sashimi alone is reason enough to make the trip, and the chance to fish for your own salmon adds an extra layer of excitement to the visit. With friendly staff and a great atmosphere, it's a memorable dining destination in the area.

High Country Salmon is a must-visit for anyone in the Twizel area. The salmon is farmed in the pristine waters of the Mackenzie Country hydro canals, and it is some of the freshest and most delicious salmon I have ever tasted. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and they are happy to answer any questions you may have.
I tried the smoked salmon, which was incredibly flavorful and had a perfect smoky taste. I also tried the sashimi, which was so fresh it melted in my mouth. I could have eaten the whole thing!
In addition to the salmon, High Country Salmon also has a variety of other products, such as caviar, smoked mussels, and salmon jerky. I also picked up some salmon oil, which is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids.
If you are looking for a delicious and healthy meal, I highly recommend High Country Salmon. You won't be disappointed!"
Forgot to add: Dont forget to buy a souvenir from the shop. Reasonable and a piece of memory comes with you. The chef is a genuinely talented yet humble person. Thanks to all.

Very interesting salmon farm and shop to visit, right off the highway. There is a nice cafe here that sells sushi and sashimi and you can see the salmon in the ponds and feed them! There are also many different salmon products available for sale. Is worth a drop in!

A very popular salmon shop near Twizel. You will probably get all the the info on their website or other reviewers. However, in my opinion the salmon sashimi is nicer here than at the Mt Cook Alpine Salmon and the cafe variety is extensive. Highly recommended for a stop over for a meal but you can also stock up for eating and cooking later on as they provide ice packs to keep the food fresh.

Cute wee shop! Love that you can go and feed the salmon for a small donation my children absolutely loved it. Excellent outside seating space bit cramped inside but that's ok. Rave over the chicken sushi it is absolutely amazing I'm guessing the salmon Sushi is the same I haven't managed to get past the chicken sushi to try it! Husband loved the pies said they were one of the best pies he's had in a long time. Definitely recommend the stop for something different.

We tried the hot smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel and the raw salmon sushi, both of which were excellent. The bagel had a generous serve of hot smoked salmon, which had a balanced smoky flavour. You can also feed the fish for free or fish for your own salmon. There is also a nice produce shop selling souvenirs, all types of smoked and fresh salmon and condiments. Worth a stop for a meal.

Food was decent but service could be better at the cafe side. The rice ball was served cold, we had to ask them to microwave it. The ducks made up for it as they were very cute and inquisitive.
Jenny on the Fish Shop side was more friendly and welcoming. And great to knowing her!

Very cool seeing a fresh water salmon farm in person.
The Cafe was popular and the space was a bit small for the amount of traffic it had but there are outdoor seatings available. I tried their sashimi, it was fresh with a clean taste and firm textures.
Allow some time to browse the Fish Shop next to the Cafe as there are many salmon products stocked. From cured and smoked salmon of various flavours to fresh salmon to caviar.
🅿️ Plenty of parking space available.
♿ Wheelchair-friendly with ramps to the Cafe and Fish Shop, and accessible restroom.

Convenient to visit from Lake Tekapo and overall, a great lunch stop if you’re a salmon fan. We found the fresh sashimi very very good ($35 for the largest portion) but the cooked food options less so. The best dish from the kitchen was the smoked salmon salad, but the laksa, burger and quiche was just okay.
The counter staff was very helpful and friendly, service was fast despite the busy lunch rush. Indoor seating is rather limited but on warmer days, it’s very pleasant to sit outside and watch people catch salmon. The salmon shop also has an incredible selection of fish to be purchased, raw or smoked in a variety of different ways / flavours.

We booked to go catch your own fish. We had four adults and two children and we had a wonderful time. The staff were amazing with the children and showing all of us how to fish and made sure we had a great experience. We all successfully caught a fish. I highly recommend this, the salmon was also amazing to eat after- but it was the staff and their awesome manner that made it for us. Pictured 6 year old who caught this 6.2kg salmon and was very proud.

Wow! Just amazing & such great value. We had a lovely ciabatta with roasted vegetables, the fabulous platter (YUM), the salmon sushi & cooked salmon. If you’re lucky, you might get the dessert of the day. The cabinet is full of great choices including chicken & breakfast options. The maki roll is the best! Lovely outside seating too.
