How long is the drive from Kununurra to Derby?
The direct drive from Kununurra to Derby is 563 mi (906 km), and should have a drive time of 10 hrs 31 mins in normal traffic.
If you’re going on a road trip from Kununurra to Derby, we did the research for you and compiled some great stops along the way — with top places to visit like Ord River Nature Reserve and Marlgu Billabong, or the ever-popular Molly Springs.
The top stops along the way from Kununurra to Derby (with short detours) are Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park, and Halls Creek Visitors Information centre. Other popular stops include Mimbi Caves Tours, The Grotto, and Molly Springs.
Nice little gem, the road in is only 2km and can definitely be accessed by a 2wd, we followed a Kia Cerato into the carpark and they seemed fine, just drive carefully and use common sense. Once you're at the main pool keep going up and around where there are natural pools above the waterfall.

Beautiful spot. Short walk to the springs. Toilets available

Lovely place cool water at first but get use to it. Only a short walk from car park. Road a bit rough with some sharp rocks.
Wayne Goodwin — Google review
What a cool little spot, good place for a dip, can get pretty busy though.
Veronica McConachy — Google review
A small and peaceful pool with a waterfall. It could get crowded quite easily but lovely for a quick dip. Easy access from the highway and only a short walk from the car park. There are toilets & a picnic area. You can climb up to the top of the waterfall to some smaller pools. I’m sure this would be impressive in the wet season!

Lovely spring fed pool, with only a short walk. The path is uneven and getting in is a little rocky, take walking shoes, it's worth it.
Jane Leach — Google review
Beautiful spot about 30 min outside of Kununurra. Small swimming hole with a really nice waterfall. Crystal clear water that was cold and refreshing.
Jeff Jorgensen — Google review
Short drive from Kununurra town but lovely spot. Quick dip, cold water for a hot summer. Lots of small fishes around but great spot for picnic and chill
Eddy Chee Eats — Google review
A very nice place to swim. About 3klm dirt road to the car park. The water hole is about 100meters walk from the picnic area that includes toilets sheltered tables and 2 BBQ's.
John O'Brien — Google review
Little waterfall is very picturesque, just enough room for a small group of people to go swimming (under 10). The walk or shall I say climb up to the top isn’t really necessary as there’s only a tiny pool that you can cram 3 people into and it’s quite slippery.
The road entering is quite rough and unpaved but you can get a 2wd into it. The toilets, there’s 2, they do not lock which is a shame.
Laura K — Google review
Beautiful spot for a swim, close to town.
Corrugated road getting in but only a short 3-5 minute hike to the waterfall. The water is murky but cool with plenty of shade. Picnic facilities available at the car park. Watch out for bees!
Odette — Google review
Don’t drive past this!! Certainly a great little water hole and waterfall, visited late May 2022, plenty of water where the Grotto and others had none. Beautiful relaxing swimming hole, only a short walk from the carpark.
Brad Cooper — Google review
A short trip from Kununurra, Photos are from 30 July, 2wd if you go slowly (even a Holden Colt got in); short walk, nice dip, BBQs, seating.

Marlgu Billabong is a stunning nature preserve that offers an abundance of wildlife and bird species. The billabong is home to a diverse range of birds, which can be spotted from the protected viewing area. The scenery is breathtaking with beautiful water lilies adding to the natural beauty of the place. The drive is easy and well worth it to witness this peaceful spot in all its glory.
A huge variety of birds .A very good bird hide .Beautiful water lillys

Great location for bird watching at dawn. So many different species. Plus a resident crocodile.
Sean Sinclair — Google review
Beautiful billabong , lots of birdlife. Old telegraph station on hill on way in , great views
Wendy Harper — Google review
Absolutely stunning. So much wildlife. Could sit and stare for hours. A must do.
Aaron Stone — Google review
Worth the drive. Plenty of birds, everywhere. Did not see any crocs. Amazing scenery. Easy drive. Protected viewing platform.
Alain — Google review
Highly recommended. The hide structure is a fairly simple but superb public investment and comfortable for short or longer observation visits. The access ramp would suit wheelchairs and walkers.
There are two tracks that intersect not too far from the hide and each connects to the Great Northern Highway. The shorter southern track is a bit rougher and passes by the old telegraph station. The northern track is longer and the relatively smooth ruts take you through low grassland fields. Condions for us were dry (May 21).
Scenery here is wonderful and a highlight for our visit. Water, lots of birds, lilies in flower and mountain ranges near and far.
Marlgu Billongbong is a must for any Wyndham visitor, possibly Kununurra as well.
Greg Tolcher — Google review
Full of water and water birds. Such a pleasure this year after seeing it almost dry a few years back

Amazing place. Lots of birds. Good viewing platforms.
OTR 19 — Google review
The road in is 7km of gravel. It's in okay condition and we managed it in a 2 wheel drive ford territory. At the billabong there is about 100 meters of board walk with 2 viewing platforms. One is open and the other is set up for bird watching. We saw lots of birds and 1 crocodile
Please like this review if it has been helpful.

There’s a writing “crocs seen at ..” on the grotto sign.
Had a wonderful experience with Luke & Aaron from "Helispirit" this morning.
After a chat with Luke, we upgraded to the 30 minute flight ($449 pp) over the 18 minute ($299 pp) flight. We saw so much more for the extra cost. Aaron (Pilot) gave us great tour & commentary about Purnululu & its history.
Jen was apprehensive about the absence of doors on the helicopter. Once in the air the whole experience of Purnululu took over, with amazing views from the air.
A must do if you can.
Mark and Jen Ackerman — Google review
We took the 42 minute flight. Awesome. Worth every cent. Thanks to our pilot Nick. (Hint: it's windier sitting in te RHS of gge chopper)
Claire — Google review
Yes it was awesome! But... when I answered the post flight questionair for some strange reason they would not receive my comments? What I answered was 1. The pilot was awesome 2. The young guy who debriefed us pre flight came across as arrogant and did not like being asked questions. We totally recommend this tour... just think that person is not best for their business...
Russell Sutherland — Google review

Great heli flight over the Bungle Bungles don't miss it from the caravan park. Aden our pilot was Informative and friendly .
Mike “MikeH” H — Google review
Robbie the pilot was so wonderful. Elliot our first contact with this crew was very welcoming. Excellent service. A must. So worth the drive in. You won't be disappointed
Deborah Rich — Google review
We used this company for a recent flight over Purnululu, whilst the flight itself was amazing the seating arrangements prior to the flight were less than satisfactory. While we were part of a group my wife and myself were not offered the opportunity to fly together which totally spoiled my wife's experience.
I understand the necessity to achieve weight balance but surely we should have been a separate flight
Wayne Vaughan — Google review
Fabulous, informative, did I mention absolutely awesome.
Glenys Smith — Google review
Did the 18 minute flight with Leon and it was amazing. Gives you a totally different perspective from doing it on land, which we had done that morning. The most amazing views I've ever seen. And Leon was a brilliant pilot. Pointed out loads of cool bits and gave us lots of information, as well as some fun flying. We always felt super comfortable during the flight.
Would highly recommend

Had a wonderful time from the moment we arrived. Lovely accommodation, super hot shower both night & morning. Dinner was superb & was unbelievable how organized the staff were so each table received their meals together. All staff & tour guides were so friendly I will recommend the Wilderness Lodge to all my friends & fellow travelers.

Another of natures miracles. Hundreds of years taking the sand stone away from a cartz vain leaving it looking like a wall. Impressive.
Michael Archer — Google review
A good tourist attraction whose beauty & attraction could be enhanced if some care & attention is given to providing details & facts as to what the wall is, how or what caused it to come into being and clearly state it is mother nature's art work and not man made. Access is via a gate which has to be opened & closed on entry & exit by the visitor. And 1.5km of the drive is on an unsealed badly corrugated road. The wall itself is beautiful and awe inspiring. Quartz in all its glory.
Shireen Shoaib — Google review
A really unusual geograph feature. Well worth a visit. (Proves that the Chinese were in Australia 3000 years ago building brilliant stone walls)
Len Mccarthy — Google review
A part of the kimberleys fascinating geological history. It changes the feel of the place with the different levels of sunlight through the day. Worth a look..
Helen Hendren — Google review
Interesting rock formation.
Easy access, we towed a van in and turning circle at the end of road. Only 1.5km of gravel road after you turn off sealed road and go threw the gate.
Please close the gate behind you not like the others that come in behind us, it's not hard. Do the right thing so these places stay open to the public
Janette Evans — Google review
My tour guide bring us here, expecting something majesty like the China wall but it's just an OK spot. We spent less than an hour to explore the area. This is a great place for geologist student to learn about the rock.
There's no public transportation to go here so you need to bring your own vehicle or rent one. I recommend to go here in the evening around 3-4 pm as it's too hot for me in the afternoon.
Ani Devi Ariyanti — Google review
If you go to Halls Creek and miss this you are mad. Go through the gate and do it about 30 minutes before sunset. Phenomenal.
Graham Weber — Google review
China Wall is an outcrop of quartz protruding from a mountain, looks like a spinal cord. Looks man made but mother nature took care of that. Entry is from Halls Creek about 8klms on bitumen to gate, then gravel. 2 to 3 klms from gate, views great worth the effort.
Barry Eaton — Google review
Pretty cool wall, you can get amazing photos from this place from the air. It actually is pretty long and can get high in some places which is cool being that it is natural and all. Not to far from halls creek also this an easy drive. (2 wheel drive is possible)
Kurt Hansen — Google review
It’s alright, just 5 minutes away from Halls Creek. You can have a nice small walk there, but there is nothing much to see, except for the medium-sized “wall”.
Tim Müller — Google review
Visit late afternoon for the sunset. Just a short distance out of Halls creek. No facilities but nice spot for a BBQ.
Got in, to get a map, and ended up, through the good suggestion of Mrs. Natasha, to buy the $2 fundraising Wild Kimberly guide which will definitely be in handy plus makes me feel good because I've contributed for both the "Halls Creek Outdoor Art & Culture Project" & to the "Royal Flying Doctors"; Two very fine 'thoughts-made-reality' to invest in.
Many thanks giving me the chance to sustain the projects
I Love it when exchanges in life are a win for all

This place is frequently closed, and I get asked these questions because I work nearby: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q1: Where can I get tap water for my vehicle from?
ANSWER: The building next to the Shell petrol station, as you travel away from the Police Station.
Q2: Where can I get my car serviced in Halls Creek?
ANSWER: To be edited in later.
Q3: What is there to do and see in Halls Creek?
ANSWER: The local tip has the largest swarm of Crows (Ravens) I have ever seen. Go visit the local tip (Rubbish dump). There is also 'The Lookout" a small hill where you can see the town from. There is also the old Halls Creek townsite, which even though dilipadated, still has better architecture than modern halls creek. Stone vs steel, stone wins every time.
Q4: Are there any payphones in Town?
ANSWER: Sort of. IGA has one that doesn't work. There is one out at Mardiwah Loop, I asked Telstra to fix, so it might work. There is another sort of uphill from the public toilets. Only Telstra Mobile coverage works here. Shell and Homes both sell Telstra Sim Cards.
Q5: Is there fuel on the Tanami road? Is the Tanami road open?
ANSWER: For the road between Halls Creek and Alice Springs: It is a mystery. Try calling the Alice Springs information center. Their number: (08) 8952 5800. The Kurrurungku Store seems to think its open, except on Sundays: 9168 8076. Perhaps you deserve to run out of fuel and get stranded though?

Why are all the visitors centers closed, the one at Fitzroy crossing and Derby where all closed. What's the use of a center if there are closed
Rick Blankhorst — Google review
The visitor centre was lovely and had a good range of gifts to buy for family. The toilets inside were lovely and clean but the one outside left a lot to be desired. I checked a few cubicles hoping to get a usable one but it appeared as if they do not get cleaned. Maybe the outside amenities are a Shire responsibility and if so they need to do something about them.
Mimbi Caves Tours offers an authentic and memorable experience in the vast subterranean labyrinth located 90km southeast of Fitzroy Crossing. Managed by Indigenous-owned Girloorloo Tours, this site is home to a significant collection of Aboriginal rock art and impressive fish fossils. Visitors can explore the caves, learn about the land, and gain insights into Aboriginal beliefs. The nearby campground provides a peaceful and beautiful setting for camping, with excellent facilities including a camp kitchen and ablution block.
Toured with Ronnie, his stories were mesmerising, knowledge excellent and then played the guitar and sang around the campfire as we had morning tea. Thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommended.

Plus, the neighboring campground is stunningly beautiful, peaceful, and quiet with nice camp kitchen and ablution block.

I camped solo at Mimbi in May 2023 and absolutely loved it. Best thing I did on a trip around Australia. The country is so beautiful and the camp grounds were excellent and really well run. WOW this place is extremely special, the campground is amazing so clean and modern. The tour is not to be missed, Ronnie our tour guide was wonderful, so jovial, the best story teller, amazing singer and gave the best history of the caves I have ever heard. This experience was wonderful and I feel so lucky to have been on this journey of the Mimbi Caves. Thanks Ronnie you did a wonderful tour and I wish we had a thousand Ronnie's that we could share with the world 👏👏👏👏 you are one in a million.

A walking trail & boat tour are offered through the scenic gorge of this rugged national park.
Must do tour if your travelling through Fritzroy Crossing. Amazing colours in gorge walls, plenty of wildlife, especially the bird life. Also informative about the indigenous history.
David Mountford — Google review
A really nice day use National Park with easy sealed road access. A few nice walks although the longer ones along the river in the gorge are on soft sand without much shade and can be tough going. The best way to see the gorge however is on the Ranger guided boat cruise that runs every couple of hours. The wildlife is abundant and the scenery spectacular.
John Price — Google review
Great scenic walk, August, hot but a close up look of the gorge.
Probably just as good if not better than the boat cruise.
The cruise has commentary and can sneak up on wildlife.

This is a great stop over in Fitzroy and not far from the main town., it’s a bitumen road in. We went here just to do the walks and they were excellent. There is also a river cruise here and you don’t need to book, just show up at certain times they are on. The main Jarrambayah walk was an easy 4.4 km return walk and sandy, it takes you through amazing rock formations, there are plaques to read more about the formations also and it’s easy to follow.

Very calm river to kayak in.
Fantastic rock formations.
There is a walk along the river as well.
Plenty of wildlife: Freshwater crocs, eagles, crane, crested pigeons and other birds. Locals say there's bull shark in the river too which they often catch while fishing. Therefore not recommended for a swim.
Hozefa Nooruddin — Google review
We had a walk beside the river and looked at the cliffs. It took about 45 minutes to get to the end. We returned on the track further up the bank. There's a lot of good information boards about the rocks and plants along the way. The road out is sealed but a bit rough.

It said open 1:30pm on Friday, but we wait out here till 2pm it's still not open. People in the center didn't even come out tell us why isn't open yet. The most terrible info center service I've never gone to. :(

I asked the woman at the desk about Derby and one of the questions was is Derby a safe place and she was very quick to answer "yes!" I said, "because Fitzroy crossing isn't!"
She said "I beg your pardon?" I repeated it and she became quite perturbed at me and "yes it is!" I said well there was a high security warning at the Fitzroy river lodge. People have been getting broken into and getting their cars stolen. The police were there several times while I was there. She said "well none of that would happen if people keep everything locked up." She was very indifferent (not friendly to me) after that. Every time you need to go to the toilet at night you have to lock up. Well I'm here to tell EVERYONE that fitzroy is a perfectly safe place just so long as you do the right thing and keep everything locked up 24/7. That means locking up all your outside storage compartments too. Make sure you tourists do the right thing now WON'T YOU!!??

Could be great but it's not, unfortunately some locals don't respect other people's property, potty mouth graffiti on walls and notice boards and it looks like a prison with mesh over every window. All businesses in this town are suffering from this. Bit of a shame.

Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) National Park is a remarkable cave system that offers visitors the opportunity to explore a limestone tunnel carved by a creek. The cave is home to bats and crocodiles, as well as rock art on the gorge walls. Walking through water is required and sturdy footwear is recommended for the gravel and sand.
September 22
What an amazing walk through the tunnel and a bit scary. You definitely need a head torch and would also recommend shoes as the rocks are sharp even in the sand. Water depth varies each year. Don't be afraid to see fresh water croc that live there. Pretty awesome experience, even got to see some.
Esra Akkus — Google review
Little hard at first to get into but worth the effort. Make sure you take a torch with you and cloths you can get wet or swimmers and stay to the left side when going through the water.
Wayne Goodwin — Google review
Part of the spectacular Devonian Reef and interesting geology and history. The walk initially requires a bit of a scramble over some large rocks but well worth the effort. Walking through water is required and good footwear for the gravel and sand. It is about 750 metres through and about halfway the ceiling has collapsed and this is the only light source so you need a good torch. Once at the end there is some rock art on the gorge walls and then you have to return the same way. It can get very busy and crowded so best to arrive early.
John Price — Google review
Amazing. Must be fit, have to swim in complete darkness for 10m. The rest is just walking and wading.
A Turns — Google review
Amazing place. The tunnel swim is well worth it. Cold water. Swim is only short (less than 30m).
George T — Google review
Very unique hike through giant tunnel caves through thigh deep cold water (August 31) in complete darkness at some points. Huge stalagmites and small natural waterfalls/springs. Small catfish and fresh water crayfish in there with you, didn’t see any freshies anywhere. At the end of the tunnel there is a boggy creek area and some walks around to rock art on either side. There are signs and toilets. Bear in mind it is 4WD access with a 40cm water crossing and another smaller water crossing. Takes about an hour and a half coming from the south. There is a lovely free campground just off the track about 1/4 of the way up that track.
Emily — Google review
What an amazing walk through the tunnel, hip high water for me in parts, you need a head lamp, camera and no fear of seeing the freshwater crocodiles that live there.
Highly recommend
Karyn Brown — Google review
This was amazing. You definitely need a torch and would also recommend shoes as the rocks are sharp even in the sand. Although we didn't have shoes, it was very painful on the feet. However, you do have to swim in one spot, and you have to climb over large rocks to enter, so you have to be reasonably agile.
There were some limestone features in a couple of spots, including a waterfall that you need a torch to see and some aboriginal art right at the end.
I would definitely recommend tunnel Creek it was great fun.
Lesley — Google review
Great experience. You have to walk through some water to see the beauty of the place. The water level mid September 2023 at the beginning was chest height and the rest was ankle and calf deep. We walked to the end and it was a great views.

We had great fun exploring though at that time of year (late October), the water was pretty stagnant and we avoided touching it. The signage could have been better - we weren’t exactly sure where to go.
