Great spot with helpful staff.
We did the Routeburn and the Kepler with a night's rest in-between. After getting our first walk booking confirmation stamped, a staff member asked us to come back between walks to get the stamp for the next walk. I thought it was a bit strange to ask us to return again just to get a stamp, so we asked to get it there and then and it was fine. No dramas.
No hut in New Zealand has ever asked to see a stamped booking from us, so it seems a bit silly that we'd have to revisit the DOC centre, especially when the old legs are aching. The addition of getting a stamped booking confirmation while carrying a print out of an online booking confirmation seems a bit silly, especially if you arrived in town after the visitor centre closes. I can imagine some people could get worried in that situation. Perhaps a stamp isn't required and we were told incorrect info from our bus driver - apologies if that's the case.
That said, DOC are amazing and set the global standard for conservation and tramping. What a great set up with amazing people. Thank you for the unforgettable experiences. We are very grateful.

Stunning. I booked a guided kayak tour where you fill up your water bottle right from the stream with glacier water 👌👌👌
Annie Nelson — Google review
Absolutely stunning National Park. The landscape is spectacular. Get onto some of the walking tracks or take a cruise on one of the fiords to see it at its best.
Malcolm Dow — Google review
Great place for a break and stop over before the drive to Milford Sounds. Amazing walk along the lake and wonderful views.
Aman Ram — Google review
Staff were lovely and helpful, and provided good information about our upcoming walk on the Kepler. The facilities/building are starting to look a little run down and could do with a spruce up - cobwebs etc are covering the facade and the whole thing is looking a little tired. Understand resources are tight and expenditure needs to be prioritised, but it's noticeable the lack of upkeep there
Grant Daniels — Google review
I really enjoyed this visitor center, not sure I have many pictures but they have a good display of maps as well as species present in the area and other historical information displays including flora and fauna information.
Helpful staff, a 10 min walk to the nearby bird sanctuary though much easier to drive to the actual sanctuary parking lot down the road past the Lakeview holiday park if that's what your wanting to see. But if you have the time the walk over there is nice, but parking at the visitor center is up to an hour only so it's hard to enjoy the bird sanctuary if you park there.
Also loving the Merino wool thin toques with various national park names on them, super practical and light weight. I've only found them at DOC visitor centers for $27-32, I now have a small collection.

Beautiful pond next to centre and bridge walk across to entrance

Very unfriendly and bizarre experience.
Went in just after quater to 12 today to get a clean gear licence. Alot of passive aggression about how they were 'about' to close for lunch at 1pm. If I did this in my job I'd be rightfully reprimanded. Frankly, if they were polite about it we would have been inclined to come back at 1pm.
Bit confused as to how they have so many staff yet absolutely have to close and have lunch altogether when in any other work place half the staff could cover the other....anyway.
Multiple people turned away rather rudely after we came in.
We were made to feel like a massive inconvenience and they didn't know where the paperwork was. If the place was more was more organised it would have been less than 5 minutes to get the licence. Except they bumbled around and complaining, so we were there longer than we needed to be in the first place.
Not the best first impression of the area and certainly the least friendly Vistor's Center we have been to.
Alex Ham — Google review
Beautiful lake and full of summer vibes. Must visit Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre. It provides a lot of useful information before we trek and hike, including exactly where trees have fallen on a certain part of track or which trek is now closed. Merchandise is priced reasonably in the shopping gallery compared to shops in the town.
Celine Chen — Google review
8th wonder of the world. Well many other places just as beautiful in NZ at least.
Long fantastic drive to get here.
Many many people - a bit too many.
It were very cloudy. Shame but is of course part of nature. Still worth it!
Jackie Frandsen — Google review
A nice information centre that tells you important things that you need to know for the surrounding area. The centre also sells essential camping and hiking gear should you go on a multi day tramp at the nearby trails.
Sophie Zhang — Google review
Rained... Still worth the trip! The waterfalls were everywhere en route to Milford Sound and the boat cruise there was spectacular even with the dodgy weather
Greg Whitaker — Google review
Beautiful scenery. Awesome on a sunny day. Spectacular in the rain. Probably the least amazing is a cloudy day with no rain. Recommend insect repellent- sandflys can be really irritating. Take a waterproof jacket for a surprise part of the cruise portion of the tour. Recommend Southern Discoveries.
Shireen Tresslor — Google review
Great experience, beautiful scenery. We took a scenic cruise with lunch picnic and visit to the underwater observatory. Nice choice of snacks, sandwiches and fruit, even cookies and chocolate. Observatory was educational. Interesting lectures by staff, would not have liked to miss that. Will sure be back with friends and family.
Gabriele Auer — Google review
Do visit the tourist centre to find out more information before you go for the hike.
Nice walking pathway to the first shelter. Took me 1.45hrs one way, a lot of sandflies so be prepared. Our target was to reach the first shelter and return after that.

Absolutely gorgeous! Just like getting into a fairyland when wandering around the Bluebell Forest. So many beautiful flowers, together with the ponds and lawn paths, give you a lot of photographs imaginations.

Just a fantastic place to walk around . We spent 2hrs walking around unbelievable amount of trees, shrubs , ferns and flowers. 75 acres of land in total. 11hrs to mow the lawns, tractor with twin mowers . Closer to the buildings you have guinea fowles, golden pheasant , doves , 1 ostrich and black and white turkeys.
Terry Klenner — Google review
I made a mistake on my order that was identified to maple glen and was delivered with the wrong plants. They said they would replace and I offered to pay for the two new plants If they freighted. I think the guy was miffed and put into the too hard basket. I would like to retract this statement regarding Maple Glen. This was a communication issue. There quality, price of plants is excellent. Delivery was quick and efficient and they provided great customer service. I have no hesitation in recommending them for the purchase of online plant varieties.

Absolutely amazing! Super friendly and helpful owners. Totally recommend a visit.

this private garden reminds me of Bush Garden in Victoria Island. The owner is a couple of 91 and 78 years old. It is free. We get recommendation frim Gore visit center, and it is on our way to Curio Bay. We spent over an hour there and also talked to the owners.

You have to visit this beautiful place. This place is simply paradise. Don't forget to donate a little and take a few hours to enjoy every single area of the garden.
Felix P — Google review
I was absolutely stunned by the scale of this garden and the many man-made lakes it has. I nearly got lost in it as I couldn't find my way back to the car-park by 5:00pm. I recommend you have a map with you when visiting :-)

Dolamore Park is Gorgeous! Beautiful bush walks for all. Camping and a wonderful play ground for young and old! You have to try the flying fox! Or a game of Frisbee Golf while you walk around the park! Don’t forget your frisbee!

One of the best parks we come across!
You can camp there. Tents, campervans. Kitchen, shower, toilets available.
Great playground for kids.
Few walks- shorter and longer.
Great place if you would like to introduce camping to your kids.
And if kids for some reason get bored- take them to the nearby Gore pool
Liga Berke — Google review
Nice park for a day out large grass area playground BBQ area toilets and walkways up into bush and lookout area and ample parking. Has several areas for caravan or mobile home to be plugged in. No dogs or hunting allowed

Absolutely an awesome place. Clean flushable toilets and great kitchen and bbqs. Camped the night there with the kids out the back part. Family Loved it. And great price. Couldn't ask for a better place. Thank You.

Nice place to be with nature. We went on the track to Popplewells Lookout. A bit steep and muddy in places but generally easy to traverse. The lookout is a bit overgrown with gorse and the lookout angle is quite narrow. Nice for a day walk but views are not fantastic.

Great place to take family or perhaps stay the night walks, bike riding and even disc golf
Bill Richardson Transport World is a massive automotive museum that boasts an impressive collection of vintage cars, tractors and petrol pumps. Spanning over 15,000 sq metres of warehouse space, the museum offers visitors a chance to admire classic automobiles and learn about their history. In addition to the exhibits, there are kids' play areas, displays of vintage fashions and a great cafe on site. The museum is not just for car enthusiasts but also appeals to families looking for an entertaining day out.
Felt like literally the only thing to do in Invercargill. This place made the drive to Invercargill worth it and I highly highly recommend it. I didn’t go to the motorcycle collection (which was at a different location) but I should have. Everything in here was so thought out, it was well looked after and maintained so well. So many collections, and not only cars. Even the toilets were one of a kind!
Suhayl Khan — Google review
This is the place to be in Invercargill for anyone who is a fan of vehicles, trucks, vintage cars, and vans.
Bill Richardson Transport World is a pretty huge place and the collection of vehicles especially the trucks is splendid! This is the most popular tourist attraction in town.
The vehicles displayed looks extremely new and very well taken care and they come in different bright colors. Amazing effort from the management and staff for keeping the place so organized and clean.
There is a cafe at the lobby area and the food served was really good, especially the baked salmon. Highly recommended to try the food at this cafe before exploring the many vehicles!
Ting Ting — Google review
Great collection. A real treat. Entrance fee is probably a bit too high though at 40 dollars. I was speaking to folks locally who would like to go, but can't afford it. Seems a shame. Cafe is good and even though a large group had just arrived, turnaround was quick.
Richard Heaton — Google review
This place is incredible. I suggest doing it in 2 parts with a break in the middle. The cafe is awesome to let you refuel and rest your legs! I want to go back just to take photos!
Sam Warland — Google review
Huge! This is a must do for any motoring enthusiast. Plenty to see. Good cafe, kids room and a kid play area with lego. So much to look at and appreciate. Parking is easy.
Dion Stubbs — Google review
This is a great place to visit for the engine enthusiast. If you're not there are things that you will find interesting like exhibits on McDonalds, Juke Boxes and even a small comfortable cinema with comfortable seats and blankets.
There are lots of Fords and trucks but there are also a number of other makes and types of vehicles to cater for those that appreciate the mechanical perfection of the internal combustion engine. There were audio/visual displays that were informative and engaging.
For the Gents; you need to check out the toilets in the corner of the main room; when you go in you will understand why this is a special room.
A well curated museum with great exhibits.
James Northey — Google review
Stunning! Incredible! I am far from being a "car guy", but this place just had me awestruck! The workmanship and attention to detail shine through in each and every vehicle on display, and the history of the founding family ties it all together.
But wait - there's more! There are outstanding collections of restored gas pumps, jukeboxes, fabrics, and various memorabilia.
You will be kicking yourself later if you come to this area and fail to visit this attraction.
Pro tip: don't leave yourself short of time to visit. We spent about 2.5 hours, and I could easily have spent another couple hours.
Martin Cole — Google review
It doesn't matter if you love cars or trucks, you will definitely be in awe of how these vehicles and history were preserved and maintained. It sire is a must place to visit in Invercargill. Even the restrooms are pretty.

Such a Fabulous private collection of vintage truck and car collection in Invercargill and must visit place for every one with kids. If Kids get tired, they’ll have a lot of fun in the LEGO room with painting and gaming. They also have a gift shop with variety of books and toys collection and a huge collection of McDonald’s toy collection which kids will love the most. Altogether we had a wonderful experience and the best part is our Kids had a really good time. Make sure to take only memories and leave only footprints.
Uditha Rupasinghe — Google review
A truly remarkable experience and astounding collection so well presented. An absolute treasure trove of memorabilia of the transport world. In addition the wearable artworks were a delightful treat and the themed toilets another feature. 💯 percent recommended.
Dianne Bright — Google review
If you are a fan of automobiles - and even if not - you should visit Bill Richardson Transport World if you're in Invercargill.
The array of vintage cars, trucks, tractors, buses and even miscellaneous vintage engines, prime movers would blow your mind. This private collection should possibly be one of the largest in the world.
Starting with the Ford models that are arranged in chronological order, to the retro ice cream trucks, vehicles used for farming, World War era vehicles, old school buses etc you have pretty much everything a vintage automobile lover would like to see. They even have a number of petrol pumps and other accessories like wheel caps, logos, insignias etc.
Every single vehicle is meticulously cleaned, they just shine so nicely! I can see the effort put into maintaining such a large collection of vehicles - which is commendable.
They have a good gift shop and a very nice cafe, where the tables are made from dance floor boards. Nice coffee and a decent selection of food and cakes.
This is an amazing place and you will marvel at the effort taken to build and maintain a place such as this!
Satish Kanakasabai — Google review
An excellent place to visit, even if you are only mildly interested in old trucks and transport, tractors, and some cars. Very good cafe, and gift shop.
Henry Griffin — Google review
If your heading to Invercargill this place is a must see. So many displays and probably the best in the southern hemisphere. If your a truck guy then your in heaven.
Keith Roberts — Google review
Amazing place.
Amazing history.
A place worth your time and visit.
Trench Quilantang — Google review
The best motoring museum you'll ever find, huge display of all kinds of vehicles and the standard of the museum is works class. Even the cafe is great.
John Craddock — Google review
Not just Trucks! Husband liked the Chips bikes, I liked the tea towels and wearable art.
Margaret Parkinson — Google review
We did an impromptu visit to Bill Richardson’s Transport World while killing time for our flight. It’s a mammoth warehouse of a building, housing an extensive collection of lovingly restored vehicles; everything from vintage Fords (models A through T) to paddy wagons and pedal cars. Petrolheads must love nerding out here. Unexpectedly, the upper floors have Kiwiana collections such as Wearable Art and a New Zealand tea towel display. I was sorry we couldn’t spend another hour here.

The Invercargill Water Tower, an iconic and picturesque red-brick structure built in 1889, stands tall at a height of 31.5 meters. Once accessible for a fee, visitors were able to walk around the top of the tower, but unfortunately it is no longer open to the public. Nevertheless, it remains a remarkable piece of engineering and building that holds great historical significance for the town of Invercargill.
Iconic piece of Invercargill history. I remember the pride my uncles had scaffolding it when I was young. Have been lucky to be around long enough to remember walking up all those steps spiraling to the top.
Belinda Pikia — Google review
Invercargill is built on almost entirely flat land. A major landmark in Invercargill, is the Water Tower which was built in 1889.
It was built to support the city’s first high-pressure water supply tank. It was designed by consulting engineer William Sharp, and built by Matthew and Hugh Mair.
Water towers are located on high ground to provide enough pressure to send water into a municipal water supply with enough force to supply all the customers in the immediate vicinity.
It comprises 300,000 bricks and is 42.6 metres high landmark . New Zealand suffered many great fires.
In the late 1880s the Invercargill Borough Council decided to build a water tower on part of the green belt.
Ratepayers wanted the tower but not an eye-sore on the town belt, architect-engineer William Sharp suggested blunting criticism by disguising the 300,000-litre steel tank with an elaborate brick tower.
Earthquakes don't kill but buildings do.
The building has been declared a 'earthquake-prone' hazard which constitutes a major risk to public safety and infrastructure. It includes a threat to the continuous operation of the city's main pump station.
Both the Water Tower and the control building are category one historic buildings, and at the moment have a rating of 25 percent of the national building standard.
The council basically don't want to pay to fix it because it will cost ($) millions to strengthen it.
It is ready to fall down in the next big magnitude earthquake.
In the last 12 million years the Southern Alps have been uplifted by an amazing 20 kilometres! The Alpine Fault has ruptured four times in the past 900 years.

Unfortunately you can't look inside
Murray Holland — Google review
Easy access to the tower. The view of the tower stands with history of the town. My family had fun taking photos with it. Great weather as well.
Faye O — Google review
While there's no more public access, it is still there in all of its historical glory, especially when lit up at night. Hopefully by "re-opening" this spot as a landmark means people will still find it and come to gaze and sit on the grass in front
Geoff Wilson — Google review
The tower stands out because of its height and size, a wonderful bit of engineering and building. The main park with fountian is nearby
Gary Esler — Google review
I remember it used to a gold coin to enter and go up to walk around the top of the tower. Shame its can't be entered anymore but still a very cool bit of Invercargill history.
Matt Tretheway — Google review
It's a stunning sight, especially at night
Brayden Anderson — Google review
An amazing piece of infrastructure that is both a work of art and a functional building.
Queens Park in Invercargill is a sprawling urban park spanning an area of 81 hectares, offering a wide range of recreational activities for visitors. The park features an 18-hole golf course and aviary, along with a botanical garden and fitness trail. It also boasts winter gardens, frisbee golf course, kids playgrounds, animal enclosures and peaceful corners perfect for picnics.
An autumn visit when gardens generally are not at their best makes no difference here as there is so much variety. Do make time to see the Winter Garden, the colours and plants as well as the fish pond are amazing.
Jonathan Hendricks — Google review
OMG this is an awesome park we just chanced upon it after dinner it was late but its summer so its bright. So many themes within the park and so well taken cared of. They're on aviary (unfortunate closed when we were there) and some animals (fenced). Beautify and the rose garden was spectacular!
Jack Choo — Google review
Beautiful park, wonderful surrounding. Variety of different gardens including Small Japanese garden. They even have an animal enclosure area and ducks walking freely throughout the park. Plenty of areas to have picnic under the trees or near lakes.
C A — Google review
A really beautiful park. Good flat walking. Very suitable for wheel chairs and strollers. Kids playground. Animal enclosure. Well worth a visit
P KS — Google review
I love Queens park there is so much to see and do. We do a regular wander through the birds and animals to the playground then off to see the ducks . The park is well maintained and typically clean. A great space for events and family outings. Kids love the playground although the water features can be hard work with a toddler to keep out of the water . I really like that the animal park is free to view any time even if they look a bit sad a lot. A must see if you are ever in Invercargill.
Rochelle Kellor — Google review
Beautiful park, perfect place to spend a few hours on a nice afternoon. It seemed like there was something for everyone, from a frisbee golf course to a real golf course (isn't that dangerous?!) to an exercise track to winter gardens... it goes on and on.
The lake is a perfect place for kids to feed a ton of ducks, but keep in mind that bread isn't great for them - try frozen peas instead!
Even with everything going on, there were lots of quiet, peaceful corners perfect for a relaxed picnic in the heart of the city.
Gretchen H — Google review
This park is AMAZING! We spent the afternoon here and the kids had a blast at the playground, aviary and animal sanctuary. Next time we will be back with our bikes and scooters.
Rebecca Lim — Google review
This is my favourite park ever. Such amazing grounds. Gorgeous Hoyas in the hot house. Amazing duck ponds. Epic kids playground. So many cool birds and animals to see too! So much to explore and experience!
Ally Pellowe — Google review
We love this park. It well maintained and has fabulous vista's in all directions. The gardens are beautiful and the playground was great for the granddaughters. We walked the perimeter of the park which took around an hour. I love they have culled the older trees that have reached the end of life and have extensively replanted. It is a tribute to the city.
Sara Hunter — Google review
This garden blows my mind! Roses and fuchsia were in full bloom, but then the aviary and native plant garden was top notch! The cafe has great food after a long wander around the property. I spent a good 3 hours🤩

A world class museum, the collection of bikes is stunning and very well presented. The bikes are not in glass cases or roped off so you can get nice and close and see all the detail. There is also a collection of open wheel race cars in the basement. Lovely staff, beautiful old building and a great cafe on-site. Highly recommend

Awesome place to go to whether you are into bikes or not. Lots of history and worth a visit- allow at least 1-2hours to fully enjoy what is on offer here to see. And the cafe is very busy so if you are going there make sure its not a quick bite you are after. Great food and service otherwise
Leanne Phillips — Google review
Huge collection of bikes, but our favorite was seeing the Britten. My bf was totally geeking out over it. I personally liked some of the original motorcycle advertisements and artwork from the late 1920s.

If you are a Motorcycle enthusiast then this place is for you. An outstanding collection of bikes that includes an amazing array of bikes, race cars, old fuel pumps. Great cafe with a very nice vegetarian all day breakfast.
Wonderful staff, great information and service. Gave us excellent advice helping us to choose what was the best day to drive to Milford Falls and also do the tour to Doubtful Sound which we booked at the Centre along with a tour to see the Glowworms at Te Anau. Excellent ambassadors for the region. Thank you Invercargill.

Friendly and helpful staff, clean and well organized store with some fun things for sale as well! The staff were EXTREMELY helpful and it was very appreciated! Thank you so much!!
We were recommended to come here by a local we met on our travels. It is a hardware and homeware store, where there are classic motorcycles and cars scattered throughout the store. You can see the original "The World's Fastest Indian" bike here. All FREE, although you can always buy something
William Lin — Google review
E.Hays & Sons is one of the coolest stores you will ever visit. Home to the original "Burt Munro Fastest Indian motorcycle" along with other amazing related items from bikes to cars, this shop has everything you can think off. Wandering the aisles and browsing the shelves and seeing what they have is an experience in itself. Certainly, a must-do if your visiting Invercargill.
Tim Dickson — Google review
Wow...a must visit for anyone who loves classic cars, bikes, machinery and/or history. The team take care to keep all the items museum quality. Free entry.

What a surprise awaits unsuspecting customers. Olde world hardware to top decor pieces.
But that is not why we visited ........ this is the home of Burt Munro vehicles and eclectic collection of iconic cars, bikes and machinery.
The stands are juxtaposed with goods for sale. We also found a sales assistants with vast knowledge of the displays.
Kate Henderson — Google review
What an awesome piece of history. This isn't just a hardware store, this is a museum of technology.
When my host suggested I visit Hayes hardware I had no idea why. I've seen plenty of hardware stores. But I've never seen one like this. This is a must visit if you're in the area of Invercargill New Zealand.

Well worth as much time as you can enjoy there. Especially if you like the Burt Monroe story, regardless though, the history shown in the displays is amazing. And of course there's plenty to purchase whether you are visiting or a local.

Lovely little place to stop whilst on the road. $12 each to go in and see the aircraft which is pennies to support local. If you've got a bit of cash, treat yourself to a flight around NZ! Very clean, well managed and maintained.

What a great spot to visit. Not only a great display of aircraft but also a beautifully restored steam engine which is one of the original Kingston Flyers

NZ has a fascinating aviation history dating back to the Wright Brothers flights in late 1903. Croydon has a collection of aircraft that ties to this history. A number of these aircraft still fly and you can take a ride in history.

Went for the summer train running day at the Waimea Plains Railway, but the planes are lovely to enjoy too! Very unique to NZ history and it's very nice to get to be up close to the planes.

This is a wonderful place to educate children about aviation, especially aviation history in New Zealand. Accompanied children can enter the hangar for free to see the collection of airplanes, some of which still fly. Adults need to pay a small fee, but it is worth it.

A great place to visit especially with the children. They will love this place which has some display aircrafts with some of them have their miniatures as well.
There is a ticket for adult, but free for kids.

We visited on a quiet day, no other visitors except us. Great collection of planes. We wanted to check out the steam train too, but was ‘out of sight’ outside the museum in the mushy area. The cafe is a highlight as we can sit outside in the sun to view the take off and landing of planes. We were lucky to spot 1 that afternoon

Such a wonderful museum with knowledgeable and lovely staff! An awesome family visit, learning about various aircrafts and a train with a steam engine.
We were treated to one of the aircrafts taking off and landing whilst we were visiting. There is a charming cafe/restaurant, as well as a retail boutique by the museum.

We were driving by, saw the sign and as a pilot (visiting from another country) I couldn’t help but pull in only to receive the rudest most brusque reception I’ve ever received in this wonderful country. I’m going to consider it a one-off (maybe she was having a bad day). Based on our 2 minute encounter I’d say the place is less about being a museum more about selling rides to tourists in an aircraft model often found in museums assuming it is authentic rather than a replica.
Out discovering a few places around the region and came across this gem. Seemed to be the place for surfing as a good steady break was rolling in. Clear views to Stewart Island and the surrounding areas. Lots of walks and bird life to discover

Te Hikoi museum offers a captivating journey through the history of the region. Visitors are greeted with a compelling 16-minute film that brings to life key events, including encounters between European seal hunters and the local Maori. The museum also delves into legends surrounding the landscape and shares intriguing anecdotes about early settlers and their way of life. One highlight is the fascinating display of Maori tool-making processes, showcasing how the local hapu utilized diverse geology to craft exceptional items.
Very well presented, easy to view, lots of good information. The displays have been well thought out and are in keeping with the purpose of the information they relate to.

Excellent museum short film to start showing local whaling and sealing history. Then exhibits relating to film plus more exhibits. Really well presented story telling of local history. Charge for entry.

Really great experience to visit this little Southland museum. Interesting stories about history of the region, nice welcome movie, friendly staff. Entrance fee $9 per Adult is ok, worth to spend there around 2 hours to read thru all the information panels or enjoy the place. Be aware of motion detector for lights/power so if you got stuck with one exhibition, you'll need to make some move to start power again :)

Te Hikoi is a fantastic museum. The visit starts with a film, continues with stories of settlers, resources, and rocks. The Māori tool making process was fascinating and seeing how the local hāpu took advantage of the varied geology to craft exceptional items was fascinating! The discovery section that has more rocks of the region is also well worth exploring for adults and children alike! Well worth the very reasonable entry fee!

Such a well set up and presented museum. Our friendly guide explained everything and assisted us through the museum. Such a fascinating history through the Maori culture to the various exploitative endeavours of the European Settlers. Well worth a visit if you're in Riverton or nearby.

We were prompted to visit this Museum and Visitor Information Centre by a review which raved about their 15 minute film. We enjoyed it, but not at an 8.6 on IMDb level*!
However Oscar-winning isn’t this short movie’s objective. Rather it’s to provide a succinct and easy to absorb overview of the early local history. Then when you view the many individual exhibits they’re that much more meaningful.
The welcome we received from Brent and the information he provided were excellent - ask him for anecdotes about Hillary if he’s there when you are!
So it’s well worth the modest ticket price of NZ$9 per adult. This includes entry and introduction movie. $5 for introduction movie only. Kids 14 and under go free.
*Note: IMDb is a film review and ratings service and nothing to do with sound volume! A film which gets 8.6 on IMDb is truly outstanding.

Great little museum tucked away in Riverton. Lots of old photos and stories of locals who were involved with whaling, sealing, timber industry and farming both Maori and pakeha. Small life like scenes brought it to life. Would revisit it to see the 15 minute video as we couldn't do that this time.

Welcome Rock offers an opportunity to explore the highlands and delve into the area's rich gold mining history along the Around the Mountains trail. The region is known for its rural charm and provides a great setting for cycling, allowing visitors to connect with friendly locals. The self-contained setup is ideal for two active individuals, offering opportunities for hiking and biking. The location provides stunning views, although it can get warm inside on clear summer days. However, the lack of light pollution makes for magical night skies.
We had a great trip, Tom kindly let us borrow his jeep as our rental car had a low spoiler and would have had difficulty up the Nevis Road. The track is amazing beautiful views and rock formations. We didn’t see anyone so the sense of seclusion was wonderful. Mud hut is cool a rustic historical hut we had a lovely fire and the outdoor bath we loved it. We didn’t have time to hike the loop but enjoyed what we did. I have recommended to fellow trampers . I really enjoyed having peace and quiet and came back feeling relaxed. Thankyou for sharing your beautiful place.
Alison Slack — Google review
The trail was recommended and we did enjoy it, especially being able to stay in Mud Hut. However, the trail was probably at the upper end of my comfort zone. The grade was fine but the track's original width is now overgrown and for quite a lot of it was only about 200mm wide. I think if I had the confidence on my bike that i had 10 years ago (when i was 50) I would have been fine, but as it was I had to get off a lot on the tricky turns areas around the stream crossings especially, and my foot would disappear into the shrubbery and my bike and I would tip into the ditch. A great ride for the confident, and a good ride if you don't mind getting on and off your bike on a narrow trail. The scenery is great - though we had pretty low cloud for much of the ride. The fire wood supplied in the hut was welcome. Mud Hut is very rustic (so felt the price per night was a bit steep despite gas and fire wood being supplied) but so cool to stay in such an old and sort of original (restored) hut. The water supply to the hut did not work when we were there. the tank was full though and we could get the water from the pipe that ran to the outdoor bath. Fraid we did not try that - didn't feel like fluffing around lighting the fire underneath it.

We stayed at Slate Hut and it was so good!! This rustic back country hut is very private with incredible views. We had no wind so was happy to enjoy a nice soak in the outdoor tub. The bike track was great and felt longer than the 27km it was. Would definitely recommend!

Epic long medium difficulty hike with insane views the whole way. We hiked the almost full loop and stayed at Slate Hut the first day. We did it in late May in early winter conditions--lots of wet slippery and icy sections but doable. It took us 8 hrs and we got to shelter at sunset. Views were epic at the hut. Hut is well furnished with comfy foam beds and gas cookers. The water tap was frozen in the morning even though we closed it at night. The car is less than an hr away though at this point. It was an epic long walk. Cheers.

Welcome Rock 47km bike ride was such an amazing experience! Although tough and challenging, I love the idea of doing this with my partner and also bringing a beer a chop for a nice celebration finish. Tom was so great and so kind to meet, it turned out to be such a great day and meeting great people along the bike ride and to finish at the end. Can’t wait until next year!

Absolutely an amazing opportunity and stunning views! We stayed at the mud hut, definitely an authentic experience, which we loved. Having the outdoor bath was an absolute highlight. Great location, very comfortable hut, stunning views and amazing outdoor bath. Would recommend being very wary of the outlet on the bath, as it spits out boiling water erratically & actually burnt my wife badly on the elbow. Didn’t stop us totally enjoying the experience, and a bonus was meeting Tom & his young daughter on the walk in to the hut. Highly recommended!!

My husband and I biked the Welcome rock trail and stayed one night at the historic Mud Hut. It was an absolute incredible experience - remote, romantic rustic with a little bath tub overlooking the mountains right outside the hut. We ordered a hamper and had ourselves a cozy charcuterie dinner and breakfast the next morning. Highly recommend!

I bought a voucher for my Husband’s Birthday, it took us almost a year to redeem it, it was however well worth the wait. We added on the platter and breakfast options and bag drop. The tracks were challenging for me as I’m not single track fit, my kids 10 and 12 managed really well this was also terrain they weren’t used to. We loved the experience the history and how Tom had a vision and has through that created a very special experience.

loved our stay at Slate Hut for my fiance's 25th birthday, a bit more rustic than I expected (mostly due to previous guests not tidying like they should've 😕) but otherwise epic! Stayed 2 nights in the snow, couldn't do the trail cos the snow was too deep, so relaxed at the hut and sat in the hot tub to watch the sun set 😁 great compromise as we had to walk up from the bottom of the Nevis road due to too much snow on the road (Tom offered to give us a lift!). It was sooo private and incredible views, we loved it, will be back in summer to try find that Welcome Rock whisky.

As a long-time local, I am totally blown away by having this epic experience on our doorstep. I am torn.... I want to tell everyone, but want to also keep this treasure a secret!
We hiked it as there was too much snow to bike. Having our packs taken in made for an easy walk along the water-race the whole way. This allowed us to cook great meals. We even had snow to cool down our Gin & Tonic's while in a hot bath!
The hut had all the charm you could hope for including evidence of cute furry little visitors. It simply wouldn't be the wilderness without them.
This might just be an experience of a life-time for many experiencing the serenity of simplicity. Next time I will take my kids as the trail can really be walked by anyone who just has the want to put one foot in front of the other. No big hills. Small waterfalls and interests along the trail.... and even one you can swim in. We got epic weather, but make sure you prep for all possibilities. And bring some chocolate for the Welcome Rock lookout :)

My family and I have stayed at nearly all of the Welcome Rock huts and each one has been incredible. They all offer a different unique adventure and a new slice of paradise.
I booked a girlfriend and I in at the “KIT CABIN” for her 40th bday present and it was unreal! We loved it! This gorgeous little cabin tucked up in the hillside- with 360 views of the surrounding mountains and farm was breath taking. We enjoyed having a glass of bubbles while relaxing in the hot tubs watching the sunset. Then witnessing the night sky come alive full of stars.
It was truely magical! The solar power in the cabin was so nice and the fire place- devine!
I can’t wait to come back again and again!
Thanks Tom and Katie for yet another epic experience and stay on your beautiful farm.

We biked in to Slate Hut. The trail isn’t that well maintained. The hut had amazing views. We assumed it would have a fire (no). It would be great if it did! We couldn’t get the outdoor bath up to a warm temp after a few hours of trying. Also the hut could have been cleaner given the price point.

Lovely unique accommodation away from it all in the country. We loved every minute of our stay. Nice and clean. Well presented. Loved everything about it. Would def book again, if we stay in the area in the future. Seeing all the trails listed, makes me wish I did trail riding.

True to description, The Mud Hut at Welcome Rock is rustic and authentic (if you're more into glamping and boujee great walk huts - opt for the Slate Hut). Everything you need and nothing you do not, the restoration of this Hut gives you an experience of yesteryear with the benefit of a fire, water, composting loo and gas to cook on).
A perfect choice for an evening with friends that enjoy getting away from civilisation.
An outdoor bath from which to stargaze rewards the effort of lighting the fire.
Tom, the mastermind behind the operation who hand-built the trails is beyond accommodating and only too happy to help and answer questions (he hand-built the trail) and there's a strong likelihood you may see him running through the tussock.
An easy and accessible drive from throughout Otago and Southland, it's perfect for an overnight mission without having to lug an enormous amount of gear.
Ps: take firelighters + matches etc - thank yourself later!
Note: prepare for the conditions and changeable weather as you are in an alpine environment.

The Red Shed is located near farmhouse and is a cosy and clean renovated woolshed and perfect for a back to basics getaway. It's for all the facilities you need and 2 lovely outdoor bath which were awesome after a long day walking. The walk itself it a beautiful 27km walk through the hills seeing a part of the countryside normally not accessible. The trail though long is easy to walk on so easily do-able in about 7-8 hours. We will definitely go back as we loved it.

Just wonderful - a magnificent place. A safe, great and very accessible proper back country experience. We found ourselves unexpectedly snowed in in March. We needed a bit of a rescue which, while it was no big drama and a real highlight of our whole NZ trip, made us realise that waterproof footwear would've been a good idea. If we'd had that we could have easily walked out. So while it's easy and accessible compared to anything else like it, you're still very much in the high country and it needs due preparation and respect.
O'MALLEY Corey — Google review
Very peaceful location.
A few things I wish was a bit clearer, we stayed at the slate hut, and didn't get the bag transfer as we thought cycling a couple of kms would be fine, the track however I'd say was above grade 3, perhaps a 4 or even a 5 in some parts, going by what the grades are in other places, you definitely need biking experience. The slate hut as well was more like 3 ks to it according to our watch. There was running water, which was great, also they have mugs and wine glasses, lots of pillows (we brought pillow cases), we chopped up some wood for kindling and really enjoyed the outdoor bath, and it was nice they have a couple of stoves for cooking on too. I'd suggest getting the bag transfers if biking as ours was quite heavy and was a bit of a mission, and we had to go in the wrong direction back with them when the track is suggested to go anti clockwise only, as there is no way we were cycling the whole loop with them. The track up to the old ski hut is pretty well maintained we had a 2 wheel drive only. We were lucky with the weather and watched a stunning sunset.
Will def reccommend to friends as I've been living in QT over ten years and it really is such a cute little spot. Just be prepared and you don't need to carry too much water as the water at the hut is safe to drink, and be prepared for the biking if you're not the most confident you may need to hop off at parts.
Thank you. :)

Lovely location and brand new self contained set up, perfect spot for 2 active people. You can hike or bike from here. Tom was super easy to communicate with and very friendly & flexible. On a clear summer day it might get a little warm inside so a gazibo or shade outside is very helpful, but then the clear sky at night is just magic, no light pollution around. Still not a fan of composting toilets, that'd be my only observation but alternatively, long drops or septic tanks have their own issues. Also, one can take the Nevis road from here over to Cromwell (only 4x4), good fun and stunning views. All in all, highly recommended and kinds thanks!

Beautiful tranquil spot up at slate hut. Barely saw a human in our 2 night stay, just great views and a unique accommodation experience. The hut has good gas burners and an awesome terrace for soaking up sun, but is a bit rustic (not the cleanest) as could be expected of a back country hut. Nil rodent sightings though :) The outdoor bath would be great if you could get it hot enough. Might be down to our fear of losing a toe if we tried to cut kindling!
Tom was super helpful and friendly - seems like a very interesting bloke!

Great experience, take headlight with you and preferably shorts and be ready to walk in water. There are some narrow and low spaces, so be fit to do some bending and stretching, but the route is marked with reflective signs, so don't get lost. 1 hour of safe underground experience.
Miroslav Drozen — Google review
Very humble facade, though it is quite interesting once inside. Bring a torch, head lamp is best or you won't make it more than a few meters inside. It does get a bit narrow and low in places - tall people, you've been warned. There is a warning that it is prone to flooding, and not to enter before, during or after heavy rain.
Karen Williamson — Google review
If you are even considering whether or not to do this, just go for it!
ROUTE - The path was well marked throughout so no need to get worried about get lost just follow the high visibility tape/arrows. It took about 40 minutes just as the sign said. The caves narrow quite a bit to sections approx 1.5 ft wide and will require a small amount of climbing.
FREE - I would've paid money for this but so happy it was a free adventure. Made it feel like we found a hidden gem since the area was quiet with no queues.
GEAR - We wore active wear, shoes we didn't mind getting wet and head lamps. It definitely pays to have two free hands.
GLOWWORMS - we saw several glowworms at around the halfway point. Not a ton but they weren't even the main attraction at that point. They could be easy to miss if you are constantly looking and turning lights off
SWIMMING POOL - the pool is unavoidable if you plan to go all the way through the cave. The middle of the pool was about 4ft deep, but you can go around the edges keeping to knee deep. We went a day after some light rain so it might have been more than usual.
Drew Smith — Google review
Very cool experience, would have never been allowed in Germany I guess. Very slippery, mind your steps. Headlamp is definitely required. Turn it off every now and then and you will see glowworms. I managed to climb around the water holes with some boulder techniques, but it's not easy. Otherwise you will get wet till the knees or so. Follow the white signs.
Don't shrink back from the beginning, the rest of the cave you can mostly walk and sometimes crawl.
Awesome experience!
Noah — Google review
Really cool, free caves that you can walk through. It took me about 30 mins, but wanted to get through quickly in case my head torch died. There are a few sections which you have to squeeze and scramble through, and a pool at the end which you can shuffle around the edge of. Would recommend wearing shorts and wellies/wetsuit shoes as your feet will get wet. Definitely worth it though, would recommend!
Billy Blanden — Google review
A pretty easy and fun cave to navigate from beginning to end. The route is clearly marked with reflectors. Just long enough and enough minor challenges to make you feel like you've accomplished something. I went the day after two days of a decent amount of rain and the cave was still dry except for the 'Swimming Pool'. The pool was deep and murky enough that I couldn't tell where the bottom of it was. Strongly recommend pushing past this as the end is just five minutes away.
TIP: There is a ledge encircling the pool just below the surface. Go along the right side of the pool. You will get wet up to your knees, but the ledge has plenty of grip so you won't fall into the pool unless you lose your balance.
As for the cave itself; plenty of cool formations, but, unfortunately, has been vandalized over the years. I even saw graffiti dated back to 1901, which was cool, but there was a lot of more recent graffiti and broken formations.
Ioffe Lee — Google review
Incredible experience! It's so cool that caves like this are still open to the public. That way it's an actual adventure and such a great experience.
We went in there without knowing much about them so we only wore hiking shoes had one flashlight and one phone but we did get pretty far with the flashlight in our mouth. Definitely recommend a headlamp! We eventually had to turn around because we got to a lake we couldn't cross with our equipment, especially since we didn't know how deep it was but reading other reviews it seems like you could have waded through with water shoes.
The way back was well marked as well but the occasional wondering if we had actually been here before made everything just more exciting!
This was definitely one of my highlights here in New Zealand.

So cool to have this amenity available. We went from entrance 1 to entrance 2, short spin and any shoes are suitable
Seán Cahill — Google review
Definetely worth visiting (and is for free!), not so much about the stalactites as most are not active, but for the arched rocks, fossils and glowwarms. It is a long cave system and you will need to crawl at a few spots. Not reccomended for sole passengers.
Ariadni Georgatou — Google review
We weren't at all prepared or equipped for caving, so we only went as far in as felt safe with cell phone cameras. That was just far enough to be in complete darkness when we turned the lights off, and even that little bit was worth stopping for.
Be aware that the main entrance is already quite rocky and requires minor clambering, so you may not be able to go inside at all if you have mobility problems. (I have a moody knee that was acting up that day, and the entrance was a bit of a challenge as a result.)
Gretchen H — Google review
This is a beautiful free to visit cave network. It is longer than expected. There is some crawling involved and at the end there is a very deep pool where most people turn back. A helmet is recommended.
The limestone formations are great. Please keep it this way. Don't graffiti your name in it.

1. bring a good torch that can last 1-2 hours. a phone torch will only last you 5-10 minutes before you feel uncomfortable and turn back.
2. wear a hat or beanie.
3. be prepared to get dirty
4. take a photo of the map before heading in.
5. enjoy! turn off torches to see the glowworms!

Fun little side excursion. Well marked 40-60 minutes underground depending on how busy it is and how flexible you are. There are about a half dozen tight squeezes but other than that it’s pretty open. Plan on getting wet and muddy (water shoes/wetsuit booties were helpful). Two sources of light per person just in case. Be sure to turn off your lights occasionally to see the glow worms. They’re rad.
It’s typical New Zealand “use your own best judgment” which I love.
You’d never find a well marked, self-guided cave system like this in the States that was open to the public on the side of the road…without some kind of liability waiver and/or entrance fee.
Eric Smail — Google review
Really fun cave experience, speaking as someone who gets nervous and doesn’t love caves. Like others said, the first part is the hardest. Definitely bring flashlights and headlamps and don’t go alone! I would recommend helmets as well.
We went here partially because we wanted to see glow worms and reviews mentioned it — as someone who had seen glow worms in other settings (Waitomo caves, outside in parks), I would say to lower your expectations here. They are lovely but we only say about 10 max at one time.
Jocelyn Tang — Google review
fantastic caves, go here every time I visit NZ. can be a different experience dependant on the weather. went once during the drier season and was fantastic, was wetter recently and quite slippery.
take plenty of torches. tales 1 to 2 hours to get through.
highly recommend

Some sections were slightly challenging with narrow sections and sections where you have no option other than to get wet. Despite this I would definitely recommend going through the caves as it was great fun and we saw many glow worms. Make sure you bring a spare change of clothes and a torch!

Awesome oldschool bridge, pretty impressive the distance in between the supports, sits over a nice river with cool rock face on the side, also has a tree swing and toilet block
Josh Giller — Google review
It's an amazing feat of engineering you can totally see the cables and wonder about the physics of the bridge. There is a beautiful view of the river and a place to eat with a vista. There's also camping allowed in this area, so feel free to have a sleep over!
Lavish Optimism — Google review
This bridge is in the middle of nowhere. But it is well worth a stop. There is plenty of parking and toilets. You can walk across the bridge.

Enjoyed breaking up the drive to Invercargill by stopping here! The rope swing on the south side was lots of fun, look for it by the river. The bridge itself maybe isn't super exciting, but it's a nice excuse to get out and stretch.

A nice spot for a rest and pictures on the way from Te Anau to Invercargill, via Gemstone Beach on the way. Historic suspension bridge with interesting information to read. There is a public toilet at the car park. There's often people with jet boats going up and down the river too

The Clifton Suspension Bridge is absolutely Amazing! How incredible that it was made in 1899! Incredible engineering for the time and still a sight to behold today. A must see, in an absolutely gorgeous setting!
Quiet little place off the beaten track. Will definitely come back here with the little boat to explore the lake some more. Great little walk down from the car park to the lake. Note - you can not take your dog here! (National Park)

RealNZ - Doubtful Sound Manapouri Visitor Centre is a must-visit destination in Manapouri. The center offers boat tours to the stunning Doubtful Sound, providing an opportunity to witness diverse wildlife such as seals, penguins, and dolphins while crossing Lake Manapouri and Wilmot Pass. Visitors highly recommend the overnight cruise for a non-touristy experience with breathtaking views of Doubtful Sound from different angles of light without feeling rushed.
Absolutely stunning overnight trip in doubtful sound. The food was delicious and very plentiful ( Inc afternoon tea, buffet dinner with salmon, roast meat and mussels). The scenery took your breath away. We were lucky enough to see dolphins. Clean and comfortable room with hot shower and toilet.
wallacethexton — Google review
Great and memorable day even in the rain! Doubtful Sound was magnificent. Boats were well equipped and comfortable. Friendly and knowledgeable staff - very informative. Coffee and cakes were very good. It can get quite cold out on deck (which is where you'll be to fully appreciate the experience) so wrap up waterproof and warm. Overall highly recommended.
Mark Roper — Google review
Doubtful Sound is an incredible sculpted landscape. With little to no top soil, the wet conditions have provided a lush environment for moss and fungus, which in turn has allowed trees to take root, creating a delicate symbiotic relationship.
With 200 days of rain per year, we were fortunate enough to have clear skies and calm waters during our visit.
Travelling by bus from queenstown makes for a long and arduous journey. However, the trip is worth the effort.
Brad Howlett — Google review
What a wonderful trip, I'm SO glad we decided to take an extra day to do the overnight. The whole area was stunningly beautiful (I actually liked it better than Milford).
The transition from boat to bus to ship was seamless, and everyone involved was friendly and knowledgeable. The ship was great, our room (a double) was cozy and the bed was really comfortable. The food was excellent and they had a bar for drinks.
It was one of our favorite experiences in a month-long trip and we would definitely recommend it!

Can't speak highly enough of these guys. The whole trip was Awesome!
Ship was clean and comfortable and the crew were fantastic. Food was was delicious. On board bar with beer wine spirits and soft drinks.
At the very least do the day trip. But if time and budget permits do the overnight trip.

We had an incredible experience with Real NZ to doubtful sound! The boat across Lake Manapouri was lovely and scenic and the coach drive to the start of Doubtful Sound was informative and hilarious (Reynold was an absolute star!). The tour of Doubtful Sound itself was stunning and because of the size of the tour group, you never had an obstructed view. Definitely recommend this 100%!
Joshua Wren — Google review
Real NZ have outdone themselves. The Doubtful Sound cruise is the premiere NZ outdoor adventure. It blew my mind the beauty of the country I have lived in my whole life. From the Captain to the Crew on the Fiordland Navigator they showed nothing but class, kindness and a deep understanding of the area. I can not recommend this two day tour highly enough. Thank you so much! You have made a memory that will last a lifetime!
Stephen Wright — Google review
Really beautiful spot and realnz were great to deal with. Special mention must go to Tony the bus driver, he was knowledgeable and funny. His patter was the second best part of the trip, running a close second to the scenery
Vicki Smith — Google review
I don't know how this is not rated 5 stars by everyone. I've done the cruise three times-- two day cruises and one overnight cruise. If you can, do the overnight cruise. It gives you plenty of time to relax and the food is incredible. Very clean rooms and bathrooms too. Worth every penny. Dress extra warm so you can stay outside up on the top deck as much as you can to take in all of the views.
If you are wondering whether to do Milford or Doubtful, do Doubtful. If you can do both, then do Milford first as the Doubtful Sound experience will be hard to beat.
Jonathan Greete — Google review
This was a nicely organised trip. Like much of NZ, you wonder how the trip ever got started. There is a hour's boat ride across a lake because that is the last bit of road. Then there is the best part of an hour on a surprisingly smooth gravel track in a hard working bus before you get to the trip on the Sound.
For us, this was an amazing contrast with the day before which had been continuous rain and heavily gusting wind on the Milford Sound which was an experience and a half.
The trip on the Doubtful Sound was blissful unspoilt scenery where every now and again another boat gave you the actual scale when your eyes deceived you.
The extra packed lunch provided was of good quality and filled any spare corners over a long day.
We only had a brief glimpse of dolphins and no other wildlife was in a cooperative mood.
Bonus mark for the boat, stable and although at capacity, there was plenty of room on deck for those who wanted without any jostling or aggravation. A nice touch was a quiet stop where the captain stopped the engines, the passengers were asked to be quiet, and everyone was well-behaved and enjoyed the sound of a waterfall and nothing else.
A great day out.

One of the best cruises we have ever done. Doubtful Sound on the Milford mariner overnight. The staff were friendly and Courtney very informative. Food great. Awesome views on 2 sunny days
Brian Norton — Google review
We did the Doubtful Sound day trip with RealNZ. It us about an hour across lake manapouri and then another hour on the bus to Doubtful Sound (arrive about 12). Reception is lost pretty much by the time you start the bus trip so ensure you are ready to disconnect and enjoy. Bring lots of snacks as tea, coffee and water are the only things included and the snacks for sale are cash only. Lots of awesome information along the way but all of the guides could do with brushing up on their te reo pronunciation. If the water is still enough the skipper will take the boat out to where Doubtful meets the Tasman and you might get to see some seals!

Incredible. Just absolutely incredible. The whole day was magic, the weather was 10/10, hardly any wind, zero rain and the only boat on the sound! Wider, deeper and longer than Milford without 90% more people

Great overnight boat trip to Doubtful Sound. Check when booking if there are any large student groups travelling on the same day (we had 47) and adjust yr schedule accordingly. You can also ask which day staff are rostered to work til - 7 days on 7 days off - we went on day 7 - the poor staff were totally exhausted and interactions were few… except for the amazing Alaskan Hillary and Div the nature guide and the bus driver over the pass (Keith?Ken?) The 5 minutes Sounds of Silence drifting noiselessly on the morning waters was great except for the students who didn’t get it at all, clunking up and down the stairs, giggling, just being teenagers. Expensive but good experience.

Great experience. Very friendly, clean, and comfortable. Understandable that it costs a lot to run an operation out there, but at the price everyone could be provided a lunch and shouldn't have to pay extra. Again, otherwise amazing.
C Math — Google review
We did the day trip which was amazing. You start out with a boat ride followed up by a 45 minute bus ride where the bus driver is also a guide so the bus ride is also an experience. After the bus ride you have 3 amazing hours exploring Doubtful Sound. Since real NZ is the only operator here it is very calm and the surroundings feels untouched. We also managed to see some dolphins enjoying themselves! During these 3 hours you are able to move around the boat freely and space will free up during this time. So no need to sit in one spot for the entire trip. Overall an amazing experience which I recommend.
Anton Göransson — Google review
I highly recommend booking this cruise, it was one of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand.
While the price can be intimidating, it's worth every penny, Doubtful Sound has A LOT to offer.
It was a fantastic experience - the boat was incredibly clean and cozy and the room was more spacious than I was expecting. The service provided by the entire crew was exceptional and saying the food was delicious would be an understatement.
Our first day was rainy, which was not a problem at all as we got to see so many rainfalls. The next morning it was bright and sunny and full of dolphins.

Fantastic day cruise. 7 hours means plenty of time exploring the area. 2 cruises and a bus trip makes a very full day. Much quieter than Milford Sound and more to explore. If you only have time for 1 cruise, I highly recommend this one. A very special experience.

Unreal experience at Doubtful Sound. We did Milford Sound the day before and actually enjoyed the whole RealNZ day-long experience more than the Milford tour. The staff was first class - the “MC” (can’t recall his name unfortunately… but believe he was originally from India?) on the RealNZ boat tour was excellent and same with the bus driver. Both were SUPER informative and did a fantastic job. Furthermore, the food and coffees onboard were great as well!

We had a brilliant tour on The Wanderer. We’d read a lot of reviews for the larger boat but since Real NZ moved the boat to Doubtful, very little. Rest assured it was a brilliant, more intimate experience with the staff and passengers really coming together and being friendly. Lots of space if you needed some alone time too. The food was incredible and catered for my vegetarian requirements easily. Good bar. Brilliant nature guide. Incredible scenery. Everything about the trip was smooth from the ferry to the coach to final boat. All the staff were friendly and happy to help.

The overnight Doubtful Sound cruise was 10/10. It really blew us away. Back in the UK we were skeptical of paying £400 each for the overnight and we originally booked the day cruise but as we travelled in NZ, we decided to switch to overnight when we got to Te Anau and we are so happy with that decision.
Firstly, it was so non-touristy. We were pretty much the only boat on the Fjord during the day, night and morning. It was so epic to see Doubtful Sound at so many angles of light, without being rushed. It felt like being in a long last paradise.
The boat was exceptionally, clean, delicious dinner and fantastic service from all the crew members who were clearly working really hard. Huge shoutout to Richard who is a fantastic Naturalist. It was awesome to do water activities too.
All RealNZ were super friendly and accommodating from the boat cruise, bus drive and beyond.
I honestly can’t recommend this enough! We also did the wanderer and it was great to be with a small group of 32.
Boaz Valkin — Google review
It’s a great albeit long day tour. In my opinion there were too many people on the tour (approx. 100 or 3 coaches full), which meant a bit of a fight getting on or off boats or coaches, or finding a spot to take a photo. I find it quite painful being a (far too polite) person. This is tourism nowadays I guess?! However Doubtful Sound is stunning and in my opinion better than Milford Sound. The tour commentary was excellent and very informative with a good sense of humour, which made it so much better than the norm. I did get bitten by a lot of sand fly so take protection! It also gets very windy on deck so take some layers with you!!

The most wonderful experience of our NZ trip. We took Deep Cover for an overnight cruise of Doubtful Sound and it was an experience of a lifetime, from exploring the various arms, to kayaking the Sound, to catching our dinner and sailing with the dolphins. Truly unforgettable!
Thank you Diane, Chris and Travis for making our trip so memorable. The experience began from the time we got into the van for the journey to Deep Cove where Chris gave a commentary of the locale and from his own experience in the area. We got on the boat in time for a sumptuous lunch of crayfish (Rock Lobster to the rest of the world) and salad. The lobster was super fresh and crunchy, so delectable!
This followed an hour long kayaking session and fishing. I've not had much success in the past but this trip, I managed to snag about 5 or 6 fishes, of which 2 would be for dinner. My daughter caught a school shark and was an experience, from the "fight", retrieving the shark to letting it go.
We cruised around around the Sound to catch glimpses of seals, penguins, dolphins and fishing at the Tasman sea (for our dinner and the shark) and closed the evening with a meal of venison, our freshly caught fish and of course, with fresh fish, we had sashimi.. multiple rounds of sashimi.
Travis and Chris showed us their crayfish traps, the bait (the unused parts of our fish catch) and releasing the few that were too small and not legal to take. Sustainability in action.
All in, a wonderful trip; most memorable of all our trips.

Our decision to join Deep Cove Charters was based on the small group setting and family owned company. Throughout the trip, you could tell that Chris and his son Travis were experts with regards to the Doubtful Sound's geography, wildlife and local cuisine. This excursion was a highlight of our two week trip through the South Island.
Not only did we get to kayak through the sound, fish for the group's food, enjoy the sunset and sunrise, but we also made great friendships with the other guests on the boat. It was a terrific time.

Had an absolutely amazing overnight cruise with 6 couples (maximum). We had an unbelievable amount of crayfish for lunch with a yummy salad. We really enjoyed fishing (me for the first time!) and all the information Chris told us about Doubtful Sound. Whilst I was busy fishing, 7 others went kayaking and had a lovely time. Fresh fish (that we caught!) for dinner and a delicious venison pie also. We were encouraged to bring a bottle of wine and there was a large fridge to store all of this too! Comfy cabins, lovely breakfast and a highly recommended trip! If you want a small boat, personalised experience, without the hoards of tourists, this is the trip for you!! 10/10!

Unparalleled experience. Uncertainty soon became wonder and exhilaration. We had a fantastic 24 hours cruising the scenic waterways, whales and more whales, penguins, fishing for dinner and enjoying the company of Chris, Tracy and the other guests. I highly recommend Deep Cove Charters above all the others. Just book it, show up and leave the rest to them.

Wow, just wow! We had a totally fantastic overnight trip out on Doubtful Sound with Captain Chris and first mate Jenny. Nothing was too much trouble for them and the scenery was breath-takingly beautiful. The meals were mouth-watering and included fresh crayfish and blue cod. We were encouraged to fish for our dinner which was fun and produced great results. The kayaking was peaceful and the (very short) swim was "bracing." We were lucky enough to see pods of dolphins with their babies which was simply delightful.
Thank you so much Diane, Chris and Jenny for such an awesome experience one which we'll never forget.

Wow. What an experience! We were tossing up whether to do an overnight at Doubtful or Milford Sound, and I'm so glad that we chose Doubtful Sound with Deep Cove Charters. It's much less busy and you get a lot more time on the boat and to do activities. We kayaked, fished, saw a lot of wildlife. Di got us all sorted on land and Chris and Travis took care of us on the water. It was such an incredible and personalised experience - I'd say the highlight of our South Island journey. If you want to see great sights but still be completely relaxed, this is the trip for you.
Te Anau Bird Sanctuary, also known as Punanga Manu o Te Anau, is a park where visitors can see rare Takahe birds up close for free, with donations welcome. The sanctuary also features other bird species to observe. While the Morepork owl has recently passed away, visitors can still enjoy the bush camp play area at the back of the park. It's recommended to visit before borders fully reopen and it gets busy with tourists.
Te Anau Bird Sanctuary is a free (Donation welcome) park to visit to see the rare Takahe birds. There are also other birds to see, but sadly it seems the Morepork owl has sadly passed away today. The kids found the bush camp play area out the back really fun, so make sure you check it out too

Really easy way to see and learn about all the local birds, especially for those who are not patient or physically motivated enough (me) to find them in the wild. Nice afternoon trip for anyone who’s interested – it’s free and there aren’t even any stairs or anything so probably suitable for everyone. The birds were also very friendly; I got bitten by the duck but I think that one was on me. Definitely worth a visit

Worth the walk or ride… isn’t that far from the centre of town. Lovely walk along the lake front. The birds here are rare and part of breeding programs to help ensure their survival in the wild. The park is free but please give a donation.

Free/by donation place to see takahē up close! Even if you don't come at feeding time, they're pretty easy to spot - and they don't seem wary of visitors at all, so they'll come right up to the fence.
There are a few other birds as well, but of course the takahē enclosure is the highlight.
We came mid-afternoon and were the only ones there, which may have helped with the birds' boldness. If you have a choice, I recommend visiting before the borders fully reopen and it gets super busy!

If you love birds, this is a great place to go. There's plenty of parking, not much walking, and a few birds to see. Also, it's free unless you opt for special tour features.
If you're staying locally on the lake, it's just a short walk with some stunning scenery, and if it's early in the morning, you'll see plenty of rabbits hopping about, too.

For a free park, this is very good. Some of the exhibits were empty or you couldn't see the birds but there were staff around to help. Good on DOC for having such a place where people can learn about conservation while at the same time looking after vulnerable or injured birds.

A bird sanctuary located on the shores of serene lake Te Anau. It was a lovely short visit to this place and lucky enough to be able to see the Takahe!
Te Anau is the only place to see Takahe, New Zealand native land birds. It is a special big bird with beautiful colors. Overall experience was lovely although the place is small. There are also other birds in the cage.

One of the best things you should definitely do is having an interest in seeing birds.
This bird sanctuary is located near town, just a 20 minute walk along a beautiful lake get you there.
There are a lot of rare birds like Takahe. Each bird cage has a sign that describes the bird’s personality. They treat birds like humans!
The very rare bird called Takahe that is on the edge of extinction was helping each other to get food, they were like a human couple!

Situated on the shores of Lake Te Anau, this sanctuary is a must do. What a privilege to see the beautiful & precious takahe birds roaming freely in a large enclosure. Lovely stop while walking around Lake Te Anau. It is free to wander and see the Kaka , Kakariki and Takahe but you can also pay a small amount to get a guided tour and then you can actually get inside the Takahe enclosure and up close to them. Very special to see these amazing birds with the Murchison mountains in view , where they were found after being considered extinct.

It's free. Though it's for saving those spices, it's still sad to see those birds develop weird behaviors. One was continuously biting the lock of the cage. Another was picking its own feather.

Stellar experience! Skipper (and fount of local knowledge) David and lovely cook James looked after us all so well and really made the trip feel very special.
We were particularly lucky I think to have had incredible weather and to see so much wildlife including something I've never even heard of: seals jumping acrobatically in our wake alongside a pod of dolphins! But as my teenage daughter said, Doubtful Sound is just so indescribably beautiful (none of our photos came close to capturing it) that we would have loved the trip whatever the conditions.
But catching the Southern Lights, just before dawn on our departure day, was another level of extraordinary. Thank you David for gently waking us up (!) to witness this unforgettable moment.
As others have said, Southern Secret has many advantages over the big boat experience. We spent ages trying to decide which to go for and are so glad we chose this one. To be honest I was worried that the smaller boat would feel crowded but in fact, there was plenty of room for everyone, even if you wanted a moment alone to enjoy the silence.

Wow, what an amazing family experience. Stunning scenery. Sean and James did a fantastic job from start to finish. It was awesome being on a smaller boat; being able to catch fish & crayfish, go kayaking, see dolphins etc, and it was nice to get to know the crew and other group members. An experience of a lifetime and worth every cent, very highly recommended!

We had a dream two week+ trip in NZ, with many memorable experiences. This overnight trip really stood out as the highlight! David and Jenny were awesome guides and hosts in every way. The boat was comfortable and the views spectacular at every turn. Jenny artfully prepared our fresh catches into a scrumptious dinner. We saw penguins, dolphins, and sea birds along with at least a dozen phenomenal waterfalls. If you are even remotely considering this trip you owe it to yourself to go!

One of the best experiences I’ve had. I’ve travelled plenty but I still rank this right up there! David and Jenny were fabulous hosts -very friendly with lots of knowledge about the area.
The first day was pretty cloudy and windy but the second day was worse so you would think we might have been disappointed but actually quite the opposite.
The Fjord was moody and clouded in mist. Those of us who wanted to kayaked and caught fish. We saw the crayfish pot brought up full of crayfish. We got very up close and personal to a waterfall and we even went behind one. Well I did. - advice- just wear socks cos it fills your shoes.
The meals were spectacular with crayfish and fish caught by our anglers on the menu.
Because there was a small group of us we all really enjoyed relating and finding out where in the world everyone came from.
Because the weather was bad we saw incredible waterfalls everywhere. David was skilled at finding calmer waters which was great. There were also less sand flies- also a huge plus.
Advice. You definitely need a very good raincoat. Those from Europe had proper wet weather pants. They would be a great investment also. I also was very thankful for the woollen hat I quickly bought at Manapouri and the thermals I brought in case. It may be different in the summer but being prepared is probably the difference between getting outside and having to stay in if the weather turns bad.
My advice take this overnight trip not the big boat!

Super way to see doubfull sound.
Beautiful ship and very good food.
You catch it on the way so super fresh.
Very nice luxury bedding, don't have any doubts but book and go

Super one day and one night trip on the Southern Secret. We were lucky enough to have Adam & James looking after us and they were superb hosts. The lunch, dinner and breakfast were excellent with plenty of great freshly caught and cooked food.
This isn’t the most luxurious of boats I’ve been on, but every en suite room was supplied with lovely bedding and was very clean. The bed itself was surprisingly comfy.
Despite quite a lot of rain - which was great for the waterfalls, we managed to get some great fishing in between downpours.
Would highly recommend one night on Southern Secret if you’re looking to get away from the crowds and enjoy some like minded company on the beautiful Doubtful Sound. We chose this over Milford Sound despite it being a little harder to get to as it’s much, much quieter than Milford Sound. Many thanks

We had an amazing time! Great crew and and amazing place! Clint, Jenny & David we’re amazing! The entire tip from pick up; boat over and Southern Secret herald were excellent. Highly recommend - you’ll have Doubtful Sound to yourselves. It’s an amazing place that feels otherworldly. I’ve never eaten so much Crayfish and Jenny was super skilled and superhuman!

Probably one of the most enjoyable experiences ever. A total of 10 guests 3 crew, skipper Chris, cook James and his son Jack on a lovely comfortable cruiser. Spectacular scenery, excellent guide / local history information, plenty of activity including kayaking and fishing. Wonderful encounter with a huge pod of dolphins. Great mix of guests from Oz, Uk, Holland and NZ. My wife celebrated her birthday the night we were on board and the team kindly provided a fabulous chocolate birthday cake for the whole boat to share. Food was excellent. Cabin was cosy. Nothing was too much trouble. I’m sure we will be revisiting and we will make sure any of our friends visiting NZ work this cruise into their itinerary. Thank you!!

A highlight of our NZ trip. Captain and crew were super friendly, trip was relaxing and beautiful at the same time. We saw a huge pod of endangered dolphins swimming alongside us and had a nice time kayaking in the sound completely by ourselves, no other boat in sight.
Also the food was fantastic with self-caught rock lobsters and fish!
However, don't skip Milford Sound for this and do both trips instead! The drive to Milford Sound over the mountains is really spectacular, with tons of photo stops and great hikes on the way. Doubtful Sound is nice but can't compare.
Do Milford in a day from Te Anau and - if vacation budget allows - add Doubtful Sound with Southern Secret as an overnight

77 Manapouri Te Anau Highway, Te Anau 9679, New Zealand
The Te Anau Glowworm Caves, discovered in 1948, are a popular tourist destination for their unique glow worms. Visitors can take a boat to the caves and should dress warmly as the top deck can be chilly and windy. Inside the cave, visitors can marvel at features such as baby stalagmites and Eddie the eel while floating under the abundant glow worms. This experience is highly recommended for anyone visiting New Zealand as it is one of the most memorable experiences available.
A great excursion from beginning to end!
Wear a warm jacket so you can enjoy the top deck of the boat to the caves. It's windy and chilly up there, but so much fun.
The cave was awesome, and our guide did a great job of pointing out things like baby stalagmites and Eddie the eel.
Floating in darkness under the abundant glow worms was magical almost beyond description, so I won't even try. I'll just say that I've lived in NZ for over two years now, and that was one of the most memorable experiences.
Highly recommend the experience, and will definitely take any friends/family who visit!

We were unsure about this tour due to the weather, but our expectations were definitely exceeded.
The staff were really friendly and informative. The tour starts on a catamaran, then you dock on the other side of the lake (about 30 minute trip) followed by a debrief at a cosy hut (has a little shop and everything). Then you go in to the cave on foot over a walkway followed by a pitch black boat ride where you can only see the glow worms - amazing.
Everything felt very safe and at the end a free hot drink is provided.
If you are on the fence, I would recommend going on this tour, well worth it.

Highly recommend this tour. The boat ride across the lake was very comfortable. I was expecting a rough ride but it was quite smooth and we were warm and dry inside. The tour guides were friendly and informative. There were 72 of us but they take you in smaller groups of 12 so it’s quite intimate and you feel like you have the place to yourselves. The caves were amazing and they have walkways and lighting all the way. A really great setup. You can’t take photos inside but there were plenty of glow worms and the waterfalls were an added bonus.

A must do experience in Te Anau. The glowworm caves experience is far better than the Waitomo Caves, I would have to say. Smaller groups feel and real authentic cave experience, with a bit of back-bending to getting you started. The glowworms feel so close and the sound of the water rushing below your feet is really heart pumping! The guides are informative and funny.

Nice experience overall. The boat ride was super nice and the cave was unique. It is educational and serene. Went with my mom who has difficulty walking and she had no issues getting through, so I’d say it’s more than family friendly

Very unique experience! Amazed by the cave and the completely dark boat ride in the end of the cave. Paradise island.
IAN HSU — Google review
The trip was very enjoyable, the safety presentation was very funny and the guide was very accommodating and answers our questions. No glow worm pictures as taking photos inside the cave was not allowed but it was a good policy so you get to enjoy the view and not to disturb the worms
RM Muyani — Google review
I think this is a missed marketing opportunity since the focus is only on the glow worms, which are cool, but the cave was AWESOME! I love a good cave tour when traveling and this was a great one. The cave has an amazing underground river and huge waterfall, we even saw a giant eel! I would have loved a longer cave tour, if the option were available. Other than that, the glow worms were pretty cool to see, the guide was friendly, and even though on the boat ride over there is a huge number of people, they break you up into smaller groups which is nice. Don't book this tour if you're claustrophobic or can't bend/squat down very low. Otherwise, highly recommend!

An excellent experience that was well worth the money. Beautiful views across the lake during the short boat ride there. The cave system is really well done with a great walkway and is lit appropriately. The boat ride at the end of the accessible cave was incredible.
Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable which added to the experience.

Really great Tour! Highly recommend! RealNZ does a superb job! The 25 minute boat ride over to the caves was narrated and filled with great information about the area and the lake. The top deck afforded great views and lots of photo opportunities. Once at the caves, they broke the group into smaller groups of 10-12 to head into the caves. Information about the caves and the glow worms was provided before, during and after with plenty of time to ask questions. No photography is allowed inside the caves but I can attest that the inside of the caves looks just like the photos on the website.
Wear close-toed shoes (they are required) and bring a light rain jacket or wind breaker because it’s damp and drippy inside the caves.
Check out the “Specials” area on the RealNZ website to bundle tours together. We combined the Milford Sound cruise with the Glow Worm Tour and saved a bunch. It’s also worth noting that the Customer Service of RealNZ is top notch. We also used them for the Stewart Island Ferry and Kiwi Night Tour on Stewart Island and every aspect of every tour and encounter was exemplary.

Absolutely stunning experience, not to be missed, worth every dollar. I've seen glow worms before in Australia, but these were better 😄 (and I'm Aussie).
Heads up:
You can't take photos inside because the light from phones/cameras/ smart watches will ruin the atmosphere and not allow your eyes to see the glow worms. Don't be that person. 😅
Bron H — Google review
Definitely recommended! The cruise to the glow worm caves are already good and the best part was the guided tour of the caves. Watch your head :) I would have loved to take photos but was advised not to by the guide.

Great experience! We took a smooth and stable boat ride to the cave, and the view from the deck was magnificent. At the cave, the guides were very helpful and knowledgeable. We were able to see the glow worms really upclose and they were magical. Of course don’t expect to see them as bright as the advertised in photographs with the naked eye.

We went in November and the boat ride over was BEAUTIFUL! We loved our tour guide Jess she was the absolute best! She was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and made our tour really fun!

A most enjoyable trip across from Te Anau, skipper Josie and commentator Zane made it interesting and fun. We were then taken into the cave by, I think, Sophie (?) who certainly knew her stuff. I've done a glowworm cave before in North Island but those were quite high up - from the 12-seater boat inside the cave the glowworms seemed very close indeed. Excitingly powerful waterfall, and Emma the Eel was there too. Our guide was very clear about no photos and being silent - it would have been so magical had a three-year-old(?) not kept jabbering. But that's what three-year-olds do, you can't stop them. I therefore think that the company should seriously consider age suitability, maybe a strong word or even edict - no under 5s? I would have been much happier without the very young children. Otherwise a much recommended trip.

Really cool experience to see some glow worms and learn about them! We did the night tour so got great views going out of the sunset on Lake Te Anau and great views of the stars by the caves too

I hate tours, and this one was phenomenal! The boat ride alone is worth the fee. The hike into a spring cave was amazing. There were eels in the water that was well lit in order to see. The guide was perfect as he made the journey smooth and amusing. The glow worms just top the trip off. I never felt I was waiting around to leave or do something else, everything is timed impeccably!

What a wonderful experience! Just everything about it. The cruise over to the caves was beautiful, such lovely sights to see! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and the walk through the caves before hoping on the boat to the worms was magical. There could have been no worms at all (there were) and I wouldn't have even been upset. Seeing the worms in such darkness was so surreal. Definitely worth doing.

Amazing experience. We went for the 8pm tour in early January. The 25 min each way cruise alone would've been worth the admission - spectacular views before we even got to the glow worm caves. After a safety brief at the building on site, we went down into the caves - a short distance with a bit of ducking and crawling due to overhanging boulders. In small groups of 8-10 or so we boarded the boats to see the glow worms. Brilliant in the cool, dark cave. No photography allowed. With the whole group of around 40, it was organised well so minimal delays in and off the boats. Finally a presentation on glow worms with complimentary tea and coffee before boarding the boat back to Te Anau. Would recommend insect repellant for the short walk through foliage to get to the building and cave.
Lake Te Anau is a stunning destination located south of Queenstown, just a two-hour bus ride away. It's an ideal place for a family getaway, offering opportunities for morning walks or jogs around the lake and plenty of facilities nearby such as supermarkets and restaurants. Visitors can take day trips to Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound from here, both known for their spectacular scenery.
A beautiful lake where you can chill out with your family. I would suggest to stay here for 2 days, and make a day trip to Milford sound from here. Nice to have a morning walk or jog around the lake. Nearby are supermarket and restaurants where you can get your necessity and meals. There are cheap & good motels around this place, and you can spend quality time with your friends and family

Well a true gem hidden down south of Queenstown, only two hours on the bus.
You must visit Doubtful Sound, while you're in Te Anau.
It is mesmerizing, enchantment with every blink of your eyes. Dress warm, turn aeroplane mode on so your cell battery doesn't deplete cruising around the breathtaking Doubtful Sounds.

We used Lake Te Anau as an overnight stop so that we could visit the Sounds. We left Queenstown early in the morning and arrived at Te Anau before lunch. It was a rainy day, so we decided to drive down to Milford Sound - even though it was torrential rain, it was worth the drive as the scenery was spectacular. We didn't get to see much of Milford itself though, as the weather prevented it. The next day was an amazing day trip to Doubtful Sound - well worth the trip.

Beautiful spot on the way from Te Anau to Milford Sound. One of the many photo stop opportunities along the way. Get out of the car and just take in the surrounding scenery. The views are out of this world and nothing beats seeing it with your own eyes. Just be careful of young kids, as this is just a stop by the side of the highway

We arrived in the late afternoon and spent a ery pleasant 30 mins or so photographing the landscape. We read about the geography and how the valley was formed. It was interesting and beautiful with the mountains surrounding the fields.

This is the first stop along the Milford highway. It is a wonderful introduction to the area. The obvious U shaped valley. The still snow dusted peaks in summer. Simply beautiful.
But it is absolutely on every tourist bus’ stop. So you can get absolutely bum rushed by a mob of inconsiderate tourists with selfie sticks. That’s why not the 5 stars.

The Eglinton Valley is one of only a few places in New Zealand with large areas of lowland beech forest.
There are plants and wildlife here that you won’t find anywhere else in the world, including more than 30 rare, threatened or endangered species.
This is why Fiordland National Park is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Area – to protect and preserve this unique area of Aotearoa.
It was carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago. Today, steep rocky mountains covered in native beech forest line the valley. The flat floor of the valley is covered in golden tussock grass.
