This is a hidden gem! A boat tour along the canal with your own personal local guide :) they speak English, ask for Henry, he was delightful!
We took the boat along the canal and got to see amazing nature and the beautiful small town of Coulon.
You have several options, you can even get a pick-nick basket provided to you during your ride, which can be anywhere between one hour and 2 hours, I believe. The cost is about €16 per person for a more private boat ride or about €12 per person together with other people.
Well worth the cost, serene ride, kid friendly, couple friendly, you can pay with a card or cash. Perfect small town French experience :)

Beautiful place to visit, you don't need to have a boat ride to enjoy, just sit at a local restaurant and have a drink and take in the scenery.

We did an 3h self exploring tour of the small canals. Beautifull and more chill when you go early, otherwise it can be boat traffic jam sometime. 😁

Had a wonderful afternoon wandering around on the waterways on a guided boat tour. 12.50euros for adults and 9.50 for children for 1 and a half hour tour. It was burning hot, maybe the hottest day of the year, and under the trees with little breezes was perfect for keeping cool. I would recommend reserving in advance because all the boats were full and reserved while we were there, so not a last minute kind of activity.

We hired two electric bikes from here. Efficient service, bikes were well maintained, and first aid was given when I fell off! The map provided wasn't great, and some waymarkers on routes unclear ( but that's not really their fault!) Best to reserve in school holidays, and maybe at any time. Cheaper than some other bike hire places. We weren't offered helmets, so you may want to take your own.
Alison Wale — Google review
We came here just to rent bikes for the day and it was great. For some reason everyone in town sent us to a another place but they were super unfriendly so we came here only to find out that they were A) super friendly and B) cheaper than the other place so we'd highly recommend coming here!!

Nice water tour. "Green Venice" the locals call it.
Possible to make group or single boat tour. 1 hour is just enough time, to finish the complete rowing session for two.
Multiple people from different household must wear mask, during the boat tour.
Canoe for 2 is also available.
A great day out, either row yourself, or take one of two options: a private or combined group tour guide. Take a picnic and so part way round. Loads of wild life to see, including otters. Get there mid morning, and it's best to pay for a 5 hour stint if rowing yourself, that way you'll get flexibility in times.

Very beautiful river but given no freedom to go and explore, also extremely busy! We couldn't go around 1corner or down a straight patch of river without another boat pressuring us and taking us over! However, overall a decent river trip!
Hugh Chapman — Google review
We took a 2 hour boat ride without a guide, which was really fun. Other than cows we didn’t see any animals, but the surroundings are beautiful. I would recommend going without a guide since there does not appear to be an added value of having guide other than that you don’t have to row yourself (which is fun to do). Staff was not super friendly.

On a baking hot 36C day this was always going to be a challenge. But our self guided boat gave us some fun. I would definitely recommend this. As words of caution though; it's not all that shaded, you can't get far in an hour and you need to be fit to go any distance. So be prepared!
It was no surprise, but very helpful, that the staff spoke good English - which made the experience all the more straightforward, & enjoyable. Also take note of their advice, they've been doing this a lot longer than you.

(Translated by Google) Very good stay on the island of Oléron with very good advice given by the Saint Denis Tourist Office. Very easy to get around the island by bike and thanks to the summer shuttles. The only downside is that the interregional buses do not synchronize with the shuttles and the taxi ride between the huts and Saint Denis cost us very expensive (€55!) for less than ten minutes of travel! It's a shame and it should limit the arrival of people by public transport on the island.

Phare de Chassiron is a notable historical landmark constructed in 1836 featuring an attractive garden, a museum, and scenic views of surrounding islands. This structure is painted in black and white colors which add to its unique appeal. The illumination emanated by the lighthouse is considered to be very brilliant. Overall, this iconic location offers an excellent opportunity for visitors to explore the rich history and natural beauty of the area.
Wonderful lighthouse experience. Sits at the top of Oleron island and has a beautiful garden that surrounds it. There are plenty of things to do nearby like horse riding, bike paths, restaurants and snack bars. Parking is plentiful and free.
Lighthouse is a nice treat. Cost is minimal and you have access to the museum which explains the rich history of the area.
There are a lot of steps, so if that is an issue, you may want to take in the sights from the ground. There are limits with how many people are in the lighthouse to avoid crowding and issue climbing and descending. It’s narrow at the top so you have to be patient and wait your turn.
This is a can’t miss visit if you have the chance to visit the island.
M W — Google review
Typical 'end of the world' set up. Tacky shops huddle around the main attraction, which is a typical French Lighthouse. Views are spectacular as the Atlantic meets the Bay.
Peter Woodford — Google review
The drive through the Ile d'Oleron was a pretty one. A really nice road along the coast and through some island towns. Very charming, very different from the mainland. Very enjoyable.
Had a great lunch stop at the Quai 17 in St. Denis-D'Oleron. After we drove to the end of the island, to this lighthouse.
Parked the car here, very close to the restaurant and other facilities on site. Unpaved, but quite low fees. Fair enough.
There is handful of shops, a bigger restaurants, some food stalls, bathrooms. All looks quite a bit dated. There are two ways to walk. One is paved and lead directly to the Phare (lighthouse). The other is an unpaved (but flat) trail circling around the lighthouse just right at the coast.
I went straight to the lighthouse first. Didn't pay to go up though. Just wanted to see the lighthouse from up-close. And: It's nothing to write home about. Quite un-exciting. There are better lighthouses around.
The trail along the coast was enjoyable though. Nice sea views and some other views of the lighthouse. But it's a quite short walk. Of course, the trail keeps going along the coast and the island, but that would take you far away from you parked car. And in high season it can get pretty hot here under the sun without shade.
It was ok. A quick walk, some nice views. Just for this I wouldn't recommend to come to the Ile D'Oleron. But we enjoyed the drive, the island and our lunch so much that we think it was very well worth spending a day here on this island.

Definitely worth the climb. If you are in any way adverse to enclosed areas, please know that the stairs are a bit tight and you will need to stop and allow others to come down (or up) The stairs at the very top are steep. There are some really great spots to explore along the coastline and an old bunker to check out. Be aware that the edge of the cliff is dangerous and can give way under your feet, so it is best to stand back a bit.

La Rochelle Aquarium is a family-friendly aquarium that features 12,000 marine animals and 600 different species. The aquarium is located in La Rochelle, France and is well-known for its bubbling seawater tanks containing around 600 aquatic species. The aquarium is easy to navigate and has interactive displays and educational programs that are great for the whole family.
I love this place. Fun for the whole family. Interactive, educational, easy to follow, well constructed and thought out. The way marine life is displayed and explained is great.
Wafa Jawad — Google review
I went to visit the aquarium on a Thursday morning and I could freely enjoy all the wonders because it was not crowded. It is a very calming and educational place and is perfect for the whole family, adults and children. It includes a multitude of aquariums and numerous species of fish and marine life, but also an Amazonian forest. At the exit there is also a toy shop with a wide variety of plush toys in the form of fish and other specific animals. I recommend the visit without any hesitation
Sasha — Google review
I have been in a few European aquariums and this one is only good. There is plenty to see but it lacks the possibility of interacting with some of the animals which for children can be a little boring. I could not find big turtles just small ones so I was disappointed. Overall interesting but expected more.
Anna Tarczynska — Google review
Very beautiful aquarium. Compared to Sealife or other aquariums this a much better one when it comes to variety and style. You can easily spend half a day with family and kids here. The collection is huge and there is a auditorium for kids. Beautifully decorated and designed. Absolutely recommended

Excellent aquarium that remains educational but fun for kids. My five year old absolutely loved it. Clean, well maintained, and enjoyable. Tip: Don't queue for tickets, just buy them online from the web site. I saw the queue of 100+ people so got my phone out, bought tickets for that exact time and walked straight in.

DD R — Google review
This aquarium is underrated. It's actually not that small, with toddlers, we spent a good 1.5-2 hours in here. love the long opening hours from 10-20. Totally worth coming back to La Rochelle for. The first floor has all the local Atlantic fish (which are like fish we eat? So they were pretty ugly). But when you first come in, you come into a very cool jellyfish tunnel. Then on the upper floor, you start to see more colorful fish from Indo-pacific and that was really fun. The facilities are nice, they have some really cool sea horses that I haven't really seen elsewhere. Some tanks are low where you can look from above without a glass (a lot of confidence in people not touching the fish...) and a lot of different type of lobsters and crabs. They have a large tank with maybe 6 medium and small sharks which you can see really well. The coolest part was the sea turtle which I honestly have not seen anywhere else. Maybe this isn't world class like the Osaka Aquarium or the Okinawa one but it's pretty good and I would probably get an annual membership next time. Absolutely no crowds on an October Monday. Awesome.
Vivian S. — Google review
Catastrophe! It was extremely crowded and thus not possible to enjoy the visit. Definitely not worth the entrance fee. In addition it was really noisy and no COVID protections are in place.

One of the most beautiful aquarium in the world, explanations in English and French. From local to tropical, fish, mussels, to oysters, so much to see and learn. It's all so well maintained. Take some 2,5 hrs for the visit
Thijs Wermink — Google review
A curious aquarium with great variety of water creatures. Try to avoid going from 11 to 15 as there are too many people. It is open till very late.
Sylvia Pavlova — Google review
Visited in September on a Sunday. Busy enough but not overcrowded. Good aquarium with wide variety of species and water tanks. €17.50 each, plus parking for four adults was quite a lot to pay.
Cloudfree — Google review
This is a superb aquarium and was the highlight of our visit to La Rochelle.
There is very reasonable parking just outside which makes getting there very easy. All the exhibits have dual language information so perfect for French and English speakers. The aquarium is large over two floors organised by ocean and finishing with a tropical rainforest exhibit!
As a family of four it cost €60, so not a cheap activity, we were there about two hours. However the kids loved it, it was very well done, educational and exciting so I’d say worth the fee. I’d recommend a visit.
Chris Brierley — Google review
There were some interesting species to see at La Rochelle Aquarium!
We enjoyed walking around, having a look at the different fish and taking photos. However, it was so busy and loud that we could barely hear ourselves think - it was also really difficult to get to the front of each tank to be able to have a closer look at the fish inside.
There also wasn’t as much variety as we expected for the ticket price, which was a bit of a shame.
I definitely do not recommend going during a school holiday or it will be overly packed but, otherwise, it was a nice enough experience.
Marina Lovejoy-Black — Google review

I went here with my family. The aquarium was extremely packed with people even thought it was late afternoon. There was a big line of people in front of entrance. I advance you to buy tickets online. It was really hot inside, probably thanks to the crowds. You have to find one spot by the glass and just move with the crowd, if you want to see everything. Also, I was looking forward to buying the aquariums touristic coin, but they were sold out. But I have to say that the place is huge and they've got many kinds of fish, crabs, etc. It was beautiful, but the crowds were uncomfortable. Overall, it was nice.
Hulking, fortress-like tower, built in the 14th-century, offering views across the harbor & town.

For €9.50 you can visit all three towers. Definitely recommended.

A very topical bay in France - we did enjoy the scenery while having lunch.
Vieux-Port is a charming and bustling harbor featuring the imposing La Chaîne and Saint-Nicolas towers, which have been repurposed into a museum and an observation deck. Along Quai Duperré, visitors can find trendy wine bars, seafood restaurants, and vendors selling delicious crêpes. In the summer, Cours des Dames hosts stalls offering a variety of goods such as crafts, cheeses, and scenic paintings.
Bunker La Rochelle (Museum) is an underground bunker constructed in 1941, situated in the midst of the city. The bunker has been preserved for over 80 years and showcases military artifacts & WWII memorabilia, adorned with marine frescoes. The majority of the writing is in French; however, translated pamphlets are available to discover the history of La Rochelle from 1939 to 1945. It served as headquarters for U-boat officers during World War II.
Visited La Rochelle and this museum popped up on Google.
It is rather small, however, it is full of interesting information. The paintings on the wall and the ceiling are rather impressive.
We were given a folder with an English translation of the boards which was really useful. It can be a little bit cramped, so we found it better to find a bigger room to read the guide rather than room by room.
If you are from England and have visited the Western Approaches museum in Liverpool, then it's the same kind of size. Also like Western Approaches it is in an underground bunker, which was previously forgotten and locked away.
Worth a visit and really interesting. Very friendly staff. Thank you!
Matt Belcher — Google review
A great museum although mostly in French, the information in English wasn’t quite enough so we got the audio guides which is an extra €2pp. One of our guides died about half an hour later so make sure the batteries are charged. All in all, a great experience, very informative and staff speak English. Since it’s a bunker it would’ve been more informative to focus more on that though rather than the invasion of France and the surrounding areas. Regardless of that it was a good visit. Cost of entry is €7.50 per adult.
Some things to add:
-there was translation in German and Spanish on the exhibits as well.
- there was no toilets in the museum
- you can pay by card
- they need an ID/passport to hold as deposit when you’re in the museum which I didn’t understand and appreciate as I almost left without my ID

This is an amazing place to visit.
They have an English guide you can read as you go around which I recommend as there is so much information on the place and without it the bunkers and displays are difficult to understand and their meaning gets lost (unless you are fluent in French obviously).
I thoroughly recommend this place.

It is more than a place to visit, it is an extraordinary experience. It is the second bunker you visit in France, the first being in Caen, but I find it much more interesting. It contains a lot of objects that can't help but arouse your curiosity, the historical and emotional load of this place makes it extraordinary. Without any hesitation I recommend visiting it

A surprisingly good (and humane) zoo with a number of hands-on areas to interest both children and adults alike nestled in the Mervent Forest.
We particularly enjoyed seeing the eagles, wolves, tiger, lemurs and sand cats doing their things.

Phare des Baleines is an octagonal tower made of limestone that was constructed in the mid-1850s. Visitors can climb to the top for a fee of 3.5 euros, where they will enjoy breathtaking views of their surroundings. The tower also provides some historical information about the island's maritime activities. A well-stocked gift shop and a few touristy knick-knack shops are available nearby, as well as several cafes and restaurants.
Had a beautiful cycle ride from La Flotte to Phare des Baleines and was not disappointed. We climed the tower which had the most amazing stone spiral staircase. The view from the top was amazing and well worth the effort. Lots of places to eat and buy a drink. A lovely place to visit 😁

257 steps to the top, but the views over the west part of the island are excellent. The lighthouse was built in 1854. There are plenty of restaurants and a view shops at the base of the lighthouse. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful overview over the sea and island, even on less sunny days a visit to consider. The climb to the top is a bit long but not impossible. With the right weather conditions and high tide it is possible to spot 'cross seas'. A sea state that only happens in rare places in the world, among which at the Phare des Baleines. Don't forget to check out the small souvenir shop.

Located at the north end of the île de Ré, it is well worth a drive up!
There is plenty of paid parking, a few cafés , an ice cream parlour and several shops.
You can visit the museum, walk up the tower, or just admire the architecture from the gardens. The views out to sea are amazing - you can see La Tranche sur Mer and the south Vendée coast from the ramparts.

Very picturesque sightseeing and one of the most famous island landmarks. One would believe it's the end of the island - although it is the most Western point, it is technically not, as the island as got a hook shape the real end is rather the Trousse-chemise beach. You cannot park at the lighthouse itself - car parks are now a few minutes walk away, which actually makes the experience much better.

Wonderful lighthouse that invites to climb up on the top. When the ocean is at low tide, catching crabs is most fun for the kids.

3.5 euros for the climb up, went early before the clouds and it was a challenging but not too difficult climb up the lighthouse. Nice views and a few historical information of the maritime activities of the island. Gift shop was good, a few touristy knick knack shops and some cafes and restaurants around but not much and little to see once you're down

Lovely time spent here, very quiet and relaxed, lovely setting, staff pleasant, great combination of rides/ attractions. Cafe needs better toilets and to sort of flies! And would have been nice to use the toboggan. Good value, plenty to do for all kids and adults!!

Lovely day out with the family, lots to do for all ages. Lots more to do than what meets the eye when you first arrive. Only reason for a 4 star rating instead of 5 is that the park itself needs a little bit of renovation and tlc. Some of the equipment could do with a paint and a service and the paths can be a bit rough. Overall though a lovely day.
Natasha Lambert — Google review
Pros: A fantastic facility for young families. There's loads of different activities for children of all ages with everything from a sand pit, to a bungee jump available to spend your day at the park. Ice cream was fairly priced (usual outdoor high street individual ice prices, rather than captive audience price)
Cons: The only reasons for a mediocre review score is the facilities which appear dated, and in need of a good lick of paint and generally a bit better up-keep. The layout and info/directions around the site were also somewhat lacking with lots of "no public access" signs on various hoardings and gates around the site.
Overall the staff were great and friendly (and spoke good English, which really helps those who can't speak French) the kids in our wider family group (including 10 kids ranging from 8 months to 13yrs) had a fantastic time and all want to return. The parents are exhausted and happy, so if it weren't for the facilities (which just need a bit of investment) it'd easily be 5* and a very highly recommended day out for families.

Great for the kids, lots to do. You could spend the whole day there. A little tired in places but the kids didn't notice.
Fabulous gardens and friendly staff. Highlights: Rose garden, zen garden, cascade, tropical greenhouse and the lotus lake is not to be missed, at its most spectacular in July/August when the lotus are in bloom. Kids had fun too with free 18 hole mini-golf and miniature farm. Lots of water, bridges, terrapins and dragonflies. Picnic area and bar/cafe. All accessible on wheels whether buggy or wheelchair.

A little tired but it is the 30th September. Will definately come back in July when I'm sure it will be stunning.

Beautiful gardens to visit in the height of summer. The lotus lake is in full bloom and there are usually a couple of weekends in July & August when a Polynesian Festival is held - complete with dancers, music and other activities. We visit every year and are always amazed at the flower borders and lake. Great for kids too as there is a little farm area where you can see goats, chickens and piglets!

OMG! We loved this place! Had low expectations when we entered but it just got better and better. The gardens have obviously been there a long time, well established plants and trees. we were gobsmaked at every turn. We filmed it for Youtube.

Strange place, part formal garden part cheap theme park. The lotus lake is stunning, some of the other formal vistas look great but it looks like they are struggling to keep up with maintenance and planting. Random sculptures of pandas and tigers and replicas of Easter Island heads with a reggae soundtrack provide a surreal contrast
Philip Graves — Google review
This place is not closed! The other entry for this says its permanently closed, and the owner is battling for Google to change it as its hitting his business. This place is open - visited at Easter 2017 - and it's lovely!! A great place to spend a morning or afternoon with the kids. Beautiful gardens and amazing lotus pond, little farm area for the kids with goats and fowl, and small mini golf.

Sprawling water park with lagoons & multiple slides plus daily foam parties & virtual rafting.
Great water park. Slides for all levels. Reasonable queues. Food is not too expensive.
Rivers are a lot of fun. Nice cosy VIP pods available to hire. Great day out for the young adults and families.

Great place to visit. Staff were polite and venue was clean. We booked online and went on a Monday and arrived just after 12. Wasn't that busy but could only imagine what it would be like at the weekend. When we arrived we decided it best that we get a 'Cocoon' as they were still available. Negatives:
(1) Food on site is poor (suggest bringing your own in a cooler box if you have one)
(2) Value for money. Adding the cocoon to the entrance fee made the day for the 4 of us quite expensive.
Niall Kirk — Google review
Visited here Aug 2019 after seeing leaflets..We got here just before opening at 10am and managed to pay quickly and find some deckchairs and parasol umbrella. All the slides were absolutely fantastic and we totally enjoyed it. €30 for adults and €20 for children and oaps..Would definately recommend this place. We will be coming back another year.

Very good experience !
For the price, the fun is good.
Because a half of the attractions are with buoys requiring 2 people, you should be an even number.
The locker system is good. 50L for 5€ and you can get it when you want during the day. You don't even loose time when you want to give it back !
If you choose well where you go at what time, you can avoid lot of waiting.
Maybe better to bring your food.
You can smell urine in some places, some queues.
To finish, for 30€ and a whole day, you have things to do !

DO NOT BOOK IN ENGLISH,THEIR WEBSITE IS WRONG
As you can see from the pictures we booked the correct day but not date because the website has Friday as the 13th August which it isn’t.
We got a refund but cannot go back because we leave following day.
The staff were rude and my young daughter was hugely disappointed and upset.
They would not let us in even though it was THEIR mistake.
I was very strong in my words to them but I was NEVER rude. We were treated disgracefully and we should have been let in considering it was their mistake.
Trying to get out of the park was a nightmare with no clear exits.
I hope we are more helpful for French visitors when they come to Ireland

Brilliant day out. Get there early as it definitely an all day experience and you want to have a meeting spot. The rides are leveled so fun for all whether you're a little adrenaline junkie or not quite so much. Cues can be a little longer during the day so I'd suggest getting on the big ones first or saving it to the last 2 hours. There are box lockers so to save cash bring food in a cooler bag and store for a later date. We also paid extra for a beachy area with loungers and shade. Was worth it with a family of 4 woth 2 children.

Fantastic water park, with a good mix of slides, pools and splash parks. had a great day out with the kids. Advisable to book online and arrive early as it does get busy. Queues weren’t too bad overall. Reasonable price to hire storage for belongings and sun beds. The cashless bracelet system is excellent and well worth doing. Food was good, had a lovely salad and some crepes.
Matt Agland — Google review
We went here yesterday with our two grandchildren (12 and 9) and we all had a very good time. I think we were lucky with the weather - it wasn't all that wonderful and that may have put many people off. However, even the sun came out in the afternoon which was kind of it. So there were virtually no queues and just lots of fun. The slides are excellent and varied - some with mats, some with toboggan boats and some you just slides down with your body. The extreme slides are steep and should satisfy the most daring. The wild water rivers are great too - again variety and fun for all. We didn't sample the food but brought our own picnic. There is a well organised 'and secure left luggage facility and a payment system that you need to add money to to purchase things - such as food and photos. It seems to work OK but is a bit odd. I would thoroughly recommend this park - but suggest going on a day when others might not. Oh, and the wave pool was good too - and quite warm. Check your directions - both Bing and Google have it in the wrong place - but I am trying to get that corrected.
Jeff Smith — Google review
I personally had a good day. We were a family of 20 (toddlers, children and adults) so had to arrive super super early to get some seats.
As the day went on, there just aren’t enough seats for everyone. So many people sat on the floor. If you want a seat - Queue much before opening time. As early at 09:00am for opening at 10:00am.
We brought packed lunches and also bought things here and there. It’s pricey for what it is but that is fully expected of a waterpark. We had to queue an hour just for food, even though the staff were rushed of their feet doing all orders.
I loved the rides but they aren’t sign posted very clearly. Not sure how many people can go on what and at what age until you’re at the front of queue. Most rides you have to be in a pair. Again, all water parks have this but the VIP skip queue is a bit of a joke when you’ve queued for over an hour to go on a ride and you see the same person rushing up there at least twice.
We wanted a really good water park photo. Not all of them have a camera for you to scan you wristband. When you do, sometimes it didn’t take a photo. So you go and check out what it looks like on the machines, again sometimes there isn’t even a photo there, the quality is super awful and dark or like a fair few of the photos, there’s a tree branch in front of our faces? Then you can pay €5 a print out and emailed version of the photo.
The rides were stills thrill and there’s a wave pool but you don’t want to spend your day in the pools when there’s cool rides to go on. Something for all ages.
Aimee C — Google review
First time and found it brilliant. Hired out the cocon and became well worth the price in the end as people were fighting over the very few seats available spread around the park. Through doing this we got access to the park 1 hour early and were able to experience quite a lot of the big popular flumes before it got busy. When it became open to the public it got really quite busy but it was still fun.
Best flume in my opinion was the lazy river, if you do go, make sure you do all paths/routes of the river as they were all lots of fun to do with the family. Something to keep in mind is that quite a lot of the major flumes required 2 people and they won't let 1 person in on a 2 person inflatable, they were very strict about that...so don't make that mistake!
Arrived at 8:30AM and left at 5:30PM - great day!
Joshua Newman — Google review
A great water park with a good selection of rides/slides. There’s rides that range from a lazy river to a fast drop chute slide so it should cover all your needs. I spent the whole day here and was fine, queued can get very long but that’s to be expected. Overall a good time with friends and family

Went for the day whilst on holiday in August. Had a 7 year old with us who enjoyed it. Unfortunately, it was cloudy and colder the day we went, so everyone was walking around in their swimming costumes with their teeth chattering! 😬 Great site, plenty of parking on a field, which was rough, so may be difficult for any with mobility issues. Level, smooth paths inside, well laid out park. Different sections with big slides, wave machine in one pool, great kids area with pirate ship. Some areas were only available if you paid extra - with big, comfortable seating in. Chairs around the pools - it took us a while to find any free. A few cafe/restaurants and kiosks selling drinks, ice-creams, a bar (the only place that sold hot chocolate). Changing rooms available, you can pay to put your clothes and valuables in boxes. You can pre-pay your wristband with money (we did €100) to purchase food, drink and gifts in the shop. Great day out if the weather is nice.

Route de la Tranche sur Mer, 85560 Le Bernard, France
Le Château des Aventuriers in Vendée, France is a XVIth century French Renaissance chateau with a rich history dating back to 1555. The castle offers treasure hunts inspired by pirates and dinosaurs, making it an exciting destination for families. Visitors can embark on trails filled with puzzles and exploration, available in both English and French. In addition to the adventure trails, there are opportunities to investigate the chateau and enjoy activities such as playing in the wild west area.
Excellent day out and I mean a day! We got there after 12 due to being held up by a huge traffic jam, so we didn't get all 4 sections done, which was ok as our youngest couldn't have done the haunted mansion. Started off with the pirate trail which was great fun solving all the puzzles. The Dino trail was a relaxing walk in the woods, with great models of dinosaurs to see and read about.
The secrets of the Chateau is great fun. The interactive game is genius, bringing the 21st century to such an old building, is a great way to get the family involved. Although be prepared to walk up lots of steps!
The wild West area is great fun with bouncy castles and games but it was too hot for us to stay long as we were already melting!
It is expensive, but you could spend more on an evening out and not want to remember that!
Would highly recommend a visit and give yourself plenty of time.
We'd happily return with youngest is older so we could do all of the activities.
Dee-Ann Harvey — Google review
A fun adventure park, with 4 main activities that you pay for as a combined ticket. Pirates trail was good fun, Dinosaur trail was ok, but was probably too big a project to do really well. The surprise activity was the interactive treasure trail in the house which was excellent. We also paid extra for the locked in room, which was very entertaining. 4 star as pricey, and the Dinosaur trail a little disappointing.

Lovely day out with the kids. Spent 5 hours here pottering around from the château to the dinassaur Park and the pirates Islands. Kids really enjoyed doing the treasure hunt.
Ciara Clarke — Google review
Chateau isn't very big. Exploring is enhanced by using an app, which put you into a kind of hunt... For secrets. Though we earned enough keys the playtime was too short to really explore all with the app, since the app stops when they time runs out.
Besides the chateau we liked the pirates hunt the most. The dinosaur but was a bit too static and the models were rather small.
Enough to do to spent most of the day.

Fabulous day. We thought the trails would be just finding the various posts, but there are little puzzles to solve at each station. All in English as well as French. Spent a good 6 or 7 hours doing the 2 trails and chateau investigation along with playing in the wild west. Kids aged 7 and 9 had a brilliant time. Took a picnic, plenty of places to eat it. We were advised that the haunted escape room might be too scary for the little ones so gave that a miss. Appreciated the advice!

A nice place to visit on a day which wasn't good for the beach. Took us a couple of hours going through and doing the activities. Mostly wheelchair friendly you can get around the one part that isn't. We didn't take the food option as it was a super u sandwich and fries so wasn't great value. Rue du Port de la Guittière, 85440 Talmont-Saint-Hilaire, France
Ruined 11th-century hilltop stronghold with tours & themed events like medieval jousting & falconry.

Very beautiful medieval castle ruins where shows are given during the week in the high season, such as an impressive bird of prey show that comes really close and flies over you and an arena with knight games. A visit is therefore recommended during the week. During the weekend nothing is organized and you can only walk around freely through the ruins.

Nice show, telling the historical story about the castle and its king. Small downside if you're not into French: the whole story is told in French. Further, you can actively play old games from the age of knights and have a look at the castle. Prices are ok seen the activities you can enjoy.

Great summer day out at the Chateau in Talmont. Every year there is a medieval festival with entertainers, medieval crafts and jousting knights. Then throughout the summer the castle hosts a variety of activietes for all the family. You can visit the inside of the chateau - with a guided tour - even in English at certain times of the day. The kids can dress up in medieval costumes, there are birds of prey and old-fashioned wooden games - great fun!
Spend the whole day there to make the entry fee worth while!

Le Moulin de la rivère - L'Oie, 85140 Essarts-en-Bocage, France
Puy du Fou, a theme park in France, features epic shows from Viking era to Ancient Rome. The resort offers free WiFi and newspapers in public areas, as well as free parking. Front desk staff is multilingual and can help with luggage storage and answer any questions about the area. The park also has outdoor seating and wheelchair accessibility. Alcohol is served at the resort and credit cards are accepted. Table service is available.
The best experience I have ever had in a themed park! Almost every spectacle is really amazing and beautiful. Some are really touching!
Must go place in France, I think!
We all wonder how the park could be make profit with so many investment for the scenery, actors and stuffs…
Five stars are not enough, I give 10 if possible!
zhang Florian (???) — Google review
An extraordinary experience of variety of shows outstanding from any other there parks. The use of modern technology enhances each show where classical theatrical media of communication is enriched by unusual props and animals. Each show is absolutely outstanding. If you wonder what you can be surprised by in a theatre stage, you will never guess it before you can actually see it.
The cons might be quite long waiting queues for each show. You are not physically able to do all the shows in one day. Major language spoke is French. Most shows translated into English while using the park's app. You also need your own transport to get in. No local buses operating. Taxi sign outside the park- none of taxis ever arrived.
Must see place for definite ;)
Aleksandra Kupiec — Google review
Great value for money. The shows were so fabulous and involved, great theatricality and the sets were amazing. The performers were acrobats, swords men and horsemen which made the performances.
French language performances (I cannot speak French) did not detract from the story or the performance.
Food and drinks seemed reasonably priced for a captive audience too.
Well done to everyone!

Personally I am not a fan of amusement parks. This concept is more interesting compared to Disney. However, it is way too crowded. We went to the Viking show three times, only got in the last time because we were there an hour ahead of the starting time. Plan on the app ahead of time. Buy the fast pass if you can get one. It will allow you to get into any show at last minute, which allows you to watch more shows. I bought my ticket last minute, there were no fast pass available anymore. But it might be worth it if you are visiting this place only for one day. They stamp you if you have to leave and can re enter one more time on the same day.

Amazing theme park! Saw all the shows and all were fantastic. You are able to learn a bit about French history, culture from the Vendée region and it’s incredibly entertaining.
Marguerite Wang — Google review
We visited Puy du Fou as a family. The shows are spectacular and really high quality, but we won't be going back. Although they start every show with a recorded message about "the unique bond between humans and animals" and seem to have animal welfare in high regard, we tend to have a different view. In many shows the animals perform in a setting that is hard to defend as natural, with loud music and many special effects. Even tough they are trained and used to this setting, it feels out of place.
Especially the gladiator show feels like a relic from the past with a tiger and a lion in a circus-like setting. Probably a good representation of how it was 2000 years ago, but not something for this day and age. Of course that's a personal opinion, but I hope this will at least help you to make an informed decision.
Please keep in mind all shows are in French. They offer real-time translations via their app, so download this beforehand. The storylines of the shows can be a bit moralistic sometimes, but the kids didn't really bother.
There are plenty of choices in terms of food and drinks, ranging from fast food to fine dining. I do recommend to book lunch and/or dinner in advance if you don't go for a sandwich or crêpes.
Expect to spend some time to park if you come by car. There is plenty of space, but there will be some waiting before you can enter the parking space. It took us about 30 minutes in total to go from the car park to the Covid check and into the park. Although not cheap I do recommend to buy the Pass Emotion, a kind of VIP ticket, if you only have a day. This will allow you late access at the shows and reserved seating. I'd recommend Puy du Fou to make it possible to also retrieve the Pass Emotion digitally. It's cumbersome to queue for this pass while you have booked everything online and in advance.
I hope that one day they will be able to host high quality shows without the need to involve a large amount of animals.

We've been going to this park for years, each time we visit France. Its absolutely spectacular shows are amazing. However, this year it was ultra packed..as if they'd let too many people inside. Queues were immense and we were turned away from shows. Such a shame as all the other times it's been fab!
Sharon Irvine — Google review
It is a great theme park well worth the 53 euro entrance fee. If you want to experience French culture, this is a better place than Disneyland Paris. Shows of less than 30 minutes are of high quality. The carefully well prepared show is even touching. Even if you don't know French, you won't have any problems enjoying it. Both children and parents can enjoy it together. Perfect!

The highlight of our family holiday. We spent two days in the park and it was incredible. The shows are amazing, the park clean, the staff and actors just great. I wish they would improve the web site booking system. It doesn’t work on many devices and is difficult to navigate and understand in English. I ended up having multiple emails and phone calls to confirm the booking.
But it was all worth it to experience the park.
(As others have noted the history is wrangled for a particular nationalist/catholic purpose. Take it with a pinch of salt!)

Much more impressive than I was expecting. Quite the best theme park I have ever visited. There are no rides , but the shows are jaw-dropping .It’s beautifully set out with lots of tree lined paths and shady picnic areas .

What can I say? Puy du fou...a crazy experience indeed, as 'fou' suggests. Left me in awe, wondering, gripped by stories, mesmerised by the artists, the remarkable storytelling, the talent and acrobatic abilities. The engineering and imagination gone into the making of this place are second to none! Everything works in clockwork perfection, each scene a second by second picture one could frame! Wizardry!!
* PS Take some sort of plastic sheet, like a garbage bags, for example, to sit on. Benches could be wet or humid. Pack a couple of sandwiches and apples to eat asyou wait in the line. It's worth getting an emotion pass, even if just for a day.

This time we visited the Cinéscénie only. It was worth the long drive! Magnifique! Spectacular! All the people, the animals, the horses, it is almost too much, there is so much going on. The translation through the app is very useful! Wonderful show! Out of respect only pictures from the seating area and the general view of the stage.

Nothing like you’d ever believe, and definitely not a theme park! One of the best experiences in France, and would 100% recommend. Suitable for people willing to brave the heat and long walk, as the park is quite large.

Second visit here, it's an amazing and unique place. Definitely worth a visit. I would recommend going on a weekday if possible, our second visit was on a Sunday and unless you have the VIP option you will be in for much longer waits and may miss out on your chosen shows altogether.

What a special place! You haven’t lived until you have been here. We have been twice now. The stagecraft is exceptional, the animals are cared for so well and the food was delicious. I tell everyone about this place, it’s worth staying for three days to see it all. Also worth pre booking dinner and lunch as the restaurants get fully booked out. It’s set in a forest and is the most amazing theme park (although it has no rides!) so many highlights for us. It is truly a place like no where else. The staff were so friendly and helpful too. We can’t wait to come back!

Amazing theme park. All the shows are spectacular from stunts to special effects. The hotel "La citadelle" was a nice and pleasant hotel to stay in thanks to the helpful staff, wonderful decoration and breakfast included.
The restaurant "La table des ambassadeurs" was mind-blowing. The decoration and atmosphere send you back to the 17th century. The food and the all-you-can-eat buffet were amazing (local French products).
The park is worth being visited for at least 2 days if you want to see the best out of it. It also includes animal pens. The atmosphere (villages, stalls, music, decoration, characters, shows) keeps you amazed.

We visited for Easter Sunday, and we weren't the only ones planning on going. Parking was hard to find, it took us about 15 minutes. Then the line was incredibly long, if you see a line coming out of the entrance just purchase them online and you'll skip the line entirely (that's what we did). Once in, we went against the crowd and were able to take really nice picture with minimal people in the foreground. Most of the cherry blossoms were gone but some were still in bloom. It's a really beautiful garden that you can get lost in for hours. If you don't like crowds don't go during the holidays, especially in Spring.
Brenna Maawad — Google review
A wonderful selection of mature trees in this Oriental gardens. I was a few days late for the full cherry blossom experience, but there were flowering magnolias and camelias along with an incredible collection of carefully trained Japanese maples around the lake. I suspect spring an autumn are the times to go.
Jacqui Ward — Google review
Beautiful park, but visit in Spring if you can and when it isn't a public holiday in France. Everything had burst or was bursting into bloom and was so very pretty. A calm and spiritual place on a day without too many visitors. I would definitely not like to go during a hot summer when the place would be mobbed. Decent parking which has been extended, and looks like further extension is planned.

Absolutely beautiful and well maintained garden. Highly recommended! However, eat lunch somewhere else. The dishes we had, chicken curry and a salad, tasted dull and very uninspired. No idea why the chicken dish was called curry since it didn't resonate a Japanese one nor a Indian one. Salad, even though it had some Asian ingredients, tasted like to big a portion of cole slaw salad. Older staff was nice, young staff ignorant.

Very nice park! Great for a walk and tons of beautiful photos. Kids under 12yrs don’t need to pay entry.
Jelle Bamelis — Google review
I went to the park around 15:00 on a sunny spring. In general the ambiance was good, people were having a good time with each other. All the plants were blooming and colorful. While exploring, you will encounter some nice photos with description, mainly about the garden in Japan.
The souvenir shop is a bit far from the entrance/exit, means if you buy some cute flowers, you have to carry it. I like more the concept of having the souvenir shop nearby the exit.
The staff was amazing, in my case, very welcoming and wide beautiful smile. It is a must-visit site, reasonable price with a super-healing experience.
I hope in the coming future, there will be some more Japan-related buildings. It is going to be awesome!

Simon Jenkins — Google review
Really good outing. I am not sure I would classify it as a Japanese garden as it has a good mixture of plants and architecture, so classifying it as an oriental garden works well. Very well done, very relaxing and enjoyable. We walked leisurely for over an hour, probably need another 30 minutes or so.
Martin Alemann — Google review
Visited here and can report the gardens are absolutely beautiful. Loads to see and we liked the information that was provided on the trees and shrubs dotted around so we knew what they were. There is loads of information on boards around the gardens too. Great to learn the history. Plenty of parking and great value at 8E. Thoroughly enjoyable and 100% recommend.
Our second visit to the Historial de la Vendée museum - especially to see the Osiris Egyptian exhibition - we were not disappointed!
Lots of artifacts and information (not much in English though if you don’t speak French)
The rest of the museum was very interesting too - with exhibitions about prehistoric times, the Middle Ages and the Vendée Wars
Good visits for history buffs, and the Café was good too!
Annette Khan — Google review
This place is so glorious. Ive been coming here for 9 yrs. It's spacious, fascinating and wonderful. The staff are helpful but today was even more of an exception. We went without realising there were special activities. One of these was a falconry show. I can barely put into words how wonderful it was. My daughter who has autism would be too overwhelmed by large bird shows (for years I've wanted to take her to puy de fou but it's too much for her) but this show today was perfect. I approached the falconer after to that him and he was so kind ... Even gave my daughter a feather 🪶 from one of the eagles. Such a wonder afternoon
Sarah Oakey — Google review
This is potentially a great introduction to the Vendée's history but only if you're a fluent French speaker. Though we speak French at intermediate level, there was too much detailed and technical information in French only to digest easily. There were too many exhibitions simply consisting of panels of writing which you could have learned simply by reading a book. The panels followed no logical sequencing or numbering so impossible to follow the information. And of course, too many displays with broken bits of pottery - a pet hate.

We always enjoy visiting. Superbe exhibitions. Went to see the Romano Galleo exhibition - brilliant displays of artifacts. Interactive and informative. Also a very good cafe.
Deirdre Tickner — Google review
A wonderful museum which can be enjoyed even if French is not your first language. We've visited on several occasions - the childrens area and visiting exhibition were different. We spent over an hour in the childrens area (theme = the sea) . Plenty to do for both kids and adults. In the main museum there are areas taking you through the history of the Vendee, a number of which have narratives in other languages. The cafe offers good value, and you can borrow picnic blankets if the weather is good. There are extensive grounds, and a moving memorial nearby.
S Mon — Google review
Visited both the Historial and the Memorial, primarily to see the 2nd.World War exhibition, which we found interesting, seeing it from it's effect on the French people. The building is modern and striking and facilities good, but the cafe menu is limited out of season. We found the Memorial to the Vendee massacres very moving - the commentary to the video presentation is in various languages via headphones and the chapel is worth a visit.

Logis La Chabotterie is a well-restored historical site that offers an immersive experience into the history of the Wars of the Vendee. The audio presentation provides insights into local history in multiple languages, making it accessible to visitors. The staff is helpful and the recreated period rooms with authentic furniture add to the impressive ambiance. Additionally, there are engaging audiovisual displays available in various languages.
Great place to visit. Free to walk the grounds

We spent the morning at this well restored Logis, learning about the history of the Wars of the Vendée.
There is an audio presentation in the first few rooms that you pass through - explaining the local history and the people involved - the guide us in several different languages so is easy to follow once you master the headsets. The staff were very helpful.
Several rooms of the Logis have been recreated with period furniture and the building is quite impressive.
Our favourite part was the formal gardens - complete with ornate box hedges, beds of poppies and a haha moat.
Tip: take a picnic to eat in the extensive parkland.

Very French. But that's hardly a surprise. There is a "spectacle" involving 18c clothes, some sword fighting and a lot of shouting. The francophones seemed entranced. The costumes were good. I left, slightly bewildered. But my French, is, at best, basic. The exhibition of the Vendéan Royalist last stand would be interesting, I think, for a fluent French speaker. I had some understanding of history, thanks to Mike Duncan's excellent Revolutions podcast but I really didn't follow the exhibition. The Logis is what I expected, interesting enough. Our highlight was a very reasonable €2 per person carriage ride by a costumed and charming carriage driver. I like horses and with my French and our carriage driver's English, I found out a lot about Normandy cobs and heavy French horses.

12th-century castle with a 700m defensive wall, medieval war machines, a crypt & explanatory shows.
I've brought several groups of friends and family to Castle Tiffauges over the years. It is a great learning environment and fun for the younger children with their exhibits and jousting. We spent several days in and around the area exploring places and learning about the area and the history here.
The staff was extremely helpful and the castle itself was imposing and covered well with informative placards to explain what happened or why the people in the past did things in the past.
If I were to go back to Europe to lead another group on a vacation this place would certainly be on my short list of must see sites in France.

Château de Clisson, located in the heart of Clisson, is a captivating medieval castle surrounded by charming cobbled streets and an enchanting riverside. Although it's mostly ruins, the site offers stunning views of the river and valley. The chateau has a rich history and is currently undergoing restoration. Visitors can explore the ramparts and enjoy leisurely walks along the river. While there are no guided tours available, it's recommended to take one for a deeper understanding of its history.
Steeped in history and an interesting place to visit. Easy to walk there from the town centre. The views from the castle are great as well. I would recommend anyone to visit, but be aware that the castle is closed from 13.00-14.00 the days that the castle is opened.

A great old piece of architecture, still being repaired, wonderful views over the river and down the valley. The original château fell into disrepair and was purchased by an artist who turned it into a feature of the gardens so it's basically lots of walls and very few rooms.

We were there on 4th September, as most of the schools already opened, the zoo was not at all busy. We brought our own picnic. Most of the animals were sleeping because of the extreme heat but I particularly loved the African plains, but 5 kilometres to cover the entire zoo on foot is ver hard with a little one without a pram, I am hoping they will work on providing electric buggies to travel in the zoo or provide good tree cover for the summer months for us to enjoy the zoo.

Edit: For some reason my review got 1 star while this should definitely be 5 stars.
We have thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this zoo. It is not necessarily one of the best-known zoos in France, but this zoo should definitely be on your list of good zoos in France. Obviously its a different scale compared to the big zoos like Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine or Zoo beauval, but there is some proper zoo design quality to be found here.
Most zoos have at least some enclosures that are not quite up-to date anymore, but we had a hard time finding such enclosures in this zoo. Even the former bear enclosure was already of a respectable size, yet now the animals got a huge and beautiful enclosure.
Our favourite enclosure was without doubt the south-america enclosure (Iguazu park): it was a lush aviary with plenty of birds, several free-roaming primate species, armadillos, margay and an indoor enclosure with free-roaming sloths and some terraria. A perfect example of clever enclosure design, interesting species, visitor immersion and efficient use of space.
In general the collection is impressive with some favorites for the general public (gorilla, orang utan, lions and a fullblown africa savannah), but also plenty of rare species (snow leopard, margay, bat-eared fox, blesbok and rock-wallaby).
The latest expansions are huge enclosures that are highly impressive. Undoubtedly fantastic for the animals and as such an impressive new part to the zoo.
We were less excited by the tiger enclosure. This enclosure was also huge, but as these animals don't live in groups we had a hard time finding the animals in the enclosure (we found one tiger all the way in the back hidden in the grass and another one pacing the fence to the side). Also the enclosure was quite open and in my opinion lacking trees that would have made it better match the natural habitat. Personally we would consider a different choice of species that make for a more attractive group-based species. We could see a nice group of painted dogs or Dholes make for a huge improvement.
So despite the big zoos in France i would highly recommend visiting zoos!

I loved this place whenever I came. Great free cultural public place with fresh spirit and friendly good vibes. The free friday night Dj set is really a good idea.

One of my worst restaurant experiences. The staff is particularly rude. I took the day menu that supposed to be quicker. I ended up waiting 30 minutes for the second course to arrive. We had to ask and it was obvious they forgot about our order. My partner ordered a vegetarian plate and they brought a pork dish instead. Then they changed it and It was just a bunch of boiled frozen vegetables in a tin tomato sauce.
My menu was a bland brownish salad with feta and tin tuna. Then the main course supposed to be pork with linguini in a basil sauce. The horror !!! The dish was a bunch of unsalted and unseasoned pasta, watery and bland as hell in a disgusting “brown sauce” that supposed to be basil based. The meat was just two small pieces of cold grill pork. Absolutely horrendous. I think in hospital or in prison you can get better quality of food.
So sad that they don’t even put the minimum effort to cook with a little of dignity and respect to customers.

Beautiful building with a small library and cafe inside. Library has good books and cafe has nice collection of breakfast items.
