Bruichladdich Distillery

Mentioned on
Distillery
Food & Drink
Bruichladdich Distillery, located a few miles from Port Charlotte, offers pre-booked guided tours showcasing their use of 100% Islay barley in whisky production as well as dram-tasting. The distillery is known for its wide range of bottlings and experimental approach to whisky-making. Their standard expression is lightly peated, but they also produce more intense variations under the Port Charlotte and Octomore labels.
Really impressed with this distillery and tour. The staff were really helpful and accomodating to our large group of 12. We had Ruby leading us around the distillery, who was great fun and full of Islay whisky knowledge (not just Bruichladdich)! The tour itself is very interesting, full of quirky historical stories. There is a big emphasis on Islay ingredients here which makes the distillery a bit unique on the island. The whisky itself is really good and they have a real variety of styles and flavours. Their ethos of a progressive distillery is really apparent here with some really interesting drams. Definitely worth booking a tour if you are heading to Islay.

Classic Laddie is a family favorite, so it was truly an honor to travel all the way from the west coast of the USA and walk through those sea-blue gates in person. Our guide said he'd only been working at Bruichladdich for four months, but his knowledge of the operation was exceptional. He truly made the tour enjoyable. We learned so much through the tour and during our tasting. It was the trip of a lifetime; thank you Bruichladdich for making our time on Islay so memorable!

One of my favorite scotches. We did the Bruichladdich Experiance warehouse tasting tour which was amazing, sitting in the warehouse sipping drams of great vintages was an experiance I won't soon forget. We had 2010 Octomore 7.3, PC 2003 and Bruichladdich 2009 straight from the barrel. An amazing experiance and the guides were very personable and knowledgable. The shop was very impressive with what was offered. My wife was also happy to have their delicious Botanist Gin.

Have to say the tour was the best we've been on. That's not an easy accolade but it's truly meant. Informative of the distillery history as well as the whisky itself. And staff who gave a proper sense of a great place to work and to be a part of. Thanks a lot.

Hands down the best tasting experience we had on Islay (and we went to many!). We sadly didn’t make it to the distillery tour as it was sold out, but the tasting at the bar/visitors centre was PERFECT! Unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the person with the short pink hair; but you’re AMAZING! Came here for the Gin, left the place LOVING their whisky!
Joaquin Mendoza — Google review
We didn't go for the tour because they were so booked.. but it was such a wonderful experience to visit the visitor centre. Ruby who was there was so nice and she told us all about the different brands and the history. She was lovely. It was a really good experience
Archita Nanda — Google review
This evening, my friends, husband, and I visited the distillery shop. Here we met Callum and Roxanna, who were incredibly helpful in assisting us with selecting whiskey and gin. Their hospitality and generosity was beyond what we expected. They showed us great kindness during our visit. We hope to see them again soon!
Jaylin Colvard — Google review
We visited Bruichladdich twice in one day, first for a tour and tasting, then back again after lunch for the cocktail experience featuring The Botanist Gin. Both were very enjoyable; we learned a lot on the whisky tour (it was interesting to see the similarities and differences between them and two distilleries we’d visited the day before), and then during the gin session we had another mini tour which covered distillery history not mentioned earlier in the day. The staff were all very friendly, the range of stuff in the gift shop was very nice—in fact we even purchased enough barware we had them ship it to the US for us! And if you like gin, the cocktail making workshop is great. We left with not only recipes, but mixers and more knowledge on mixology than I’d expected—not to mention the three drinks we had! We didn’t get to all the Islay distilleries on our short trip, but the next time we’re back, we’d still come back to Bruichladdich!

GUIDED DISTILLERY TOUR is great, saw the whole Whisky making process and even got to try the core range ( Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore) for just 15£.

It was amazing. The girls, Sam and another one were our guides for the distillery and warehouse. Loverly and funny, both of them. They explained everything and more. I had the greatest time with Ingle at the master class of The Botanist gin. We have fun and speak about spices and herbs, botanicals and so on... I girl after my own heart. I love the vibes of the distillery itself. Old and new. To never discard an idea.... Lovely as well the drams we tried. And the treasures I found in the warehouse.

Absolutely incredible experience at Bruichladdich, highlight of the six distilleries we visited during our trip to Islay. We were on the island in late March to celebrate my birthday, and we did both the distillery tour with Ashley and the warehouse experience with Ruby (who taught us a delightful phrase in Gaelic, passed down from her grandfather). Both guides were really, really good and you’ll be lucky to have either if you stop by! The whisky included in both experiences was just phenomenal (ridiculously good value for the cost of the tickets), and I was given a very special birthday dram that became one of the highlights of my week in Scotland. If you were on Islay and could somehow only visit one distillery, I’d make it Bruichladdich. Can’t recommend highly enough.
Cooper O'Neil — Google review
I love Bruichladdich, they feel like a sparky start-up even though it's been around for decades. The tour is great: I booked a VIP walkaround with Ashley, a walking repository of company knowledge and procedure. She was dynamic and generous, engaging me like an actual person instead of just a warm body walking through a time-slot. I had a great experience, and the best part was the cask originals she decanted at the end, exclusive to this experience. If that's not enough to get you to go I have nothing else to say.
Bill Scurry — Google review
We had the warehouse tasting with Lewis. Nothing better than drinking scotch completely surrounded by row upon row of casks. Lewis was knowledgeable and had some good stories. He also has a great sense of humour. The highlight: We got to sample Octomore 7.3 right from the barrel! I thought this stuff from 2010 was long gone! (it is). If you are going to Islay, do not miss this distillery! Oh, and if you can’t remember Lewis’ name, just ask for Anna’s boyfriend lol!

Amazing experience, definitely recommend the tour with whiskey tasting in the warehouse, we’ve had unique samples that you can’t find outside.

Getting to Islay is no easy task, but it is completely worth the effort! Loved the tour! Our tour guide was so informative and very sweet!

Absolutely amazing morning this morning at the distillery. We had a tour with Ashley who was fantastic. She was down to earth, friendly and definitely knows her stuff. Thank you so much all four of us found the tour very interesting. We will definitely return in the future. So very tempted to move to Islay now.

Maybe my favorite distillery on Islay. Not just because of the great whisky and gin, but because of their always friendly and approachable staff. They are extremely kind and friendly - which means you almost can’t help to buy a few bottles 😅👏🥃

Finlaggan Trust

Mentioned on
Historical place
Sights & Landmarks
Finlaggan is a historic site located three miles from Port Askaig, consisting of the ruins of houses and a chapel on an islet in a shallow loch. This stronghold was once the seat of power for the Lords of the Isles. Visitors can reach the island via a wooden walkway and explore the remains with information boards available to read. The visitor centre provides further historical and archaeological explanations, as well as featuring a video presentation by Tony Robinson.
Great place if you love medieval history, lovely visitor centre and also displays within the ruined buildings. All the history of Clan Donald and Somerled
Graham Trotter — Google review
Historic ruins aren't much to see, but it's a fun walk out to the island and the visitor center folks are very knowledgeable

Beautiful place to walk to! We were staying near Ballygrant Inn and walked here. Took about 35 min give or take? Although the bridge is closed right now, it is fun to see this ruin from afar!

Worth a visit while touring on the island. We attempted a round trip of the Loch but stopped at 75%.. some parts are definitely not accessible. Stick to the paths and enjoy the wonderful work of the collective behind Loch Finlaggan.

Fab place .. even though it was over cast an windy..was amazing place to visit.. the sound oh the wind through the reeds was very atmospheric as you walk towards it, was not busy when I visited so it added to the atmosphere as you walked amongst the ruins reading about the past.. fab time chilling and taking it all in an reflecting on what I was seeing.. defo a place to visit..😊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

An hour spent taking in the seat of the 'Lord of the Isles', situated in an atmospheric and beautiful setting. A boardwalk forms part of the walk, with the 7th - 16th century history explained on information boards located across the site. Visited on a Sunday, however the walk is still accessible (honesty donation box - cash). Consider appropriate footwear if a wet day as path heads through a field. Car parking available, and if the visitor centre is closed, the walk starts to the right of the building through a gate.

Better than expected. These places can be very dry and boring for kids with the odd activity sheet if they are lucky. The VR headset made a real difference to our 10 and 6 year old... even if they did just try to 'fly' into cows (can't explain). Would recommend doing this first then walk up to the ruins as it burned off some of the boredom from the car, put them in a fun mood and then we could point out things they had seen on the screen.
Graham L — Google review
Very cool! Fascinating history, with clearly marked plaques describing what you’re looking at. We came after 5pm so the visitor Centre was not open, but still very worth it. An easy walk (about 5 mins) to the boardwalk and across to the island.
Tess Rada — Google review
Make sure to stop off here while on Islay, really interesting history of the area.
Chris Betts — Google review
Great value visitor centre with enough information to explain the significance of the ruins we could see from the centre. Binoculars were a nice extra especially since we could get a good view of the lambs and kids (11 and 7) also enjoyed the VR headset. Definitely worth wandering over to the ruins afterwards.
Marianne Privett — Google review
Beautiful space. The bridge is currently in the stage of being rebuilt, but I still enjoyed the view. Museum was closed due to Islay Show. I definitely have to come back another time!

Go! Do not miss this amazing historical site. We went one afternoon and were truly impressed with the history and beauty of this place. We went close to closing but were kindly greeted by a warm and welcoming employee (sadly we don’t recall her name). She explained the history behind the site and its ties to Scottish history as a whole. Well worth the trip. The history she told us about we later saw echoes of throughout the rest of our trip throughout Scotland, particularly in Glencoe and Edinburgh. Thank you for such a wonderful and informative experience. I hope more people learn about Somerled and his descendants. I also hope that this site officially gets the funding it needs so that more can be learned about the Lords of the Isles.

For most whisky loving Islay visitors, Finlaggan probably won’t even appear in their radar as the place to visit. But I find this place to pleasantly nice for a short walk with some good history.

Laphroaig Distillery

Mentioned on

Food & Drink
Laphroaig Distillery, which holds a Royal Warrant, offers tours that showcase the whisky-making process and include tastings. The distillery is known for producing highly peaty malts and takes pride in this reputation. Visitors can also take walks to see the water source used in production. Standing in the parking lot between the still house and the sea, one can experience the unique convergence of new-make spirit vapors with ocean air before entering the historic facility.
We had the Warehouse 1 Tasting experience and it was amazing. You get to taste 3 drams of whiskey unavailable anywhere, and you get to take home 2 bottles of the ones you liked. Also, you learn about how they age and the casks, and drinks amazing whiskey all in the warehouse where they age. It's an amazing scenery, smell, and tasting experience. You also get to take home the tasting glasses in padded boxes so you can put in your check in luggage in case you're flying.

Laphroaig distillery is set in a gorgeous bay on Islay. The tour guide was knowledgeable and had some very good recommendations. The tour had multiple options for tastings and offered driving drams for those not drinking. The bar was a little lacking for those wanting some rare drams, but had a nice selection of the core range. The shop has a nice variety and we found our plot and collected our rent (5cl bottle) for being 'friends of Laphroaig'.
Jess Dominik — Google review
Rented bikes to go along the three distillery trail with the 1st stop at Laphroaig. The have a nice little museum you can walk around with your dram. They also have coffee which was nice in the morning. I got the distillery exclusive flight which was very very good. I even got to check out my 1 SF plot of land I aquired when I bought a bottle years ago. Loved it!

Visiting Laphroaig was a dream come true! The home of my favourite whisky has been on my 'to visit' list for a number of years and getting to see where it comes from has left me with a greater appreciation of the life and love that goes into producing such a fantastic tipple. Nestled in a bay, the distillery benefits from beautiful views out to sea, catch the sun at the right time of day and it'll firmly etch itself within your favourite memories. The whisky tasting in Warehouse 1 with Sorcha was an education and a great laugh. Sampling 3 unique whiskies and walking away with a bottle of one is an extra little treat that will ensure I'll remember the place when back at home with a glass of it in my hand. We visited on the day when Distillery Manager John Campbell was leaving, our tasting was slightly disrupted by the fact that he was giving a speech to staff. As a 'thank you' for our patience John signed a dram for us. At the distillery they've ensured that the history of the place hasn't been lost. The visitor experience was, as a result, very intimate. They haven't built a big gift shop or seating/dining like other distilleries on the island. This is authentic! Thanks Sorcha, thanks John, thanks Laphroaig!

We were blown away by how welcoming and warm the people are here at Laphroaig. Our tour was great fun and informative. The sense of fun and friendliness swept through the place from all the staff to the customers who if like me felt at home there just chatting to people from all over the world. I’ve always loved their products now I love the place and the people that make it too. Can’t recommend this place enough

Considering it's the top reason we chose to visit Scotland, and one we traveled all the way from Kansas city to enjoy, this experience did not disappoint. From the whisky to the staff, to the coziness of the tasting room and cleanliness of the restrooms, everything was above and beyond expectations. Complimentary coffee and tea were provided at a nice side table for customers to enjoy. Crisps, oatcakes, and cheese all available for purchase. Staff was hospitable, welcoming and did not made you feel like a local. Customers ranged from golfers to cyclists to just plane tourists (us), and all were welcome. The tasting room offered a variety of seating including leather chairs to relax and sink into while you taste your way through the smooth and smokey samples. I will definitely be coming back and hope to do the triple tour with the bikes, that many had mentioned while on the island. Thank you Laphroaig for making our trip to Scotland such an enjoyable experience!

With limited availability on tours, I settled on booking a slot in the shop. Laphroaig are taking CV19 very seriously which is fair enough, just one + case could wipe out most of their workforce! The shop is well stocked and the staff were very helpful in offering tasters. My ultimate highlight was returning the next day via paddleboard along the coast, which provides some excellent views! Hope to visit again soon and have a tasting tour!
Daniel Chorley — Google review
One of the best tours I've taken. If possible do the 4 hour tour! The Tour guides will answer any questions you have. AND of course an excellent tasting process throughout the tour. I will come back when I visit Scotland again!
Gary Mitchell — Google review
Lovely coastal site with comfortable indoor and outdoor seating areas. Complementary tasting of one of their many offerings. 'Tasting ' menus also available. Prices of products vary from reasonable to ludicrous. Very pleasant staff. Very relaxed atmosphere (weekday visit). 45 minute walk from town or easy cycle ride along smooth off-road path.

This has to be the best alternative to doing a distillery tour. We were invited to visit the bar for a welcome dram where we were treated to the excellent 2023 Càirdeas release. We followed that up a very well priced tasting flight comprising 4 different batches of the 10yo cask strength. In addition to a copy of the tasting notes the host also gave us a great overview of each of the drams. If you’ve only tried the “standard” Laphroaig, these whiskies will show you another side to what’s on offer here. Definitely reignited my love for the brand and a Batch 12 is on its way!

Fantastic tour, very friendly and accommodating staff, would highly recommend this distillery! We went to Laphroaig distillery today and was shown round by our tour guide Alice who was extremely helpful, informative and kind towards our group. The tour was fantastic and a dream come true as my favourite whisky is Laphroaig. Our trip to Islay has been amazing and only made better by the staffs accommodation. 10/10 tour 100/10 staff 1000/10 whisky

OMG! We absolutely loved this tour. MacKayla was an awesome guide! We loved the location, loved the fact that they had complimentary coffee and a beautiful lounge area. On top of that, they have nice tables outside where you can sip and enjoy your time there. If I could do anything differently, I would have just spent more time here. We had to rush a little bit because we had another tour 15 min once this ended. Additional tip: we absolutely would recommend the tour where you bottle your own bottle. It was an unforgettable experience!
M Gonzalez — Google review
We recently enjoyed the 'Uisge' tour at Laphroaig Distillery, a bespoke journey designed for enthusiasts who desire a more profound connection with the distillery’s craft. The Gaelic name 'Uisge,' meaning 'water,' reflects the tour's core element: hiking to the water source to enjoy a lovely lunch box and a wee dram (or several…). After getting a welcome dram at the bar that also provides free coffee and tea for visitors, our tour commenced on the malting floor and continued through to the kiln, where we saw (and smelled) the peat fire that contributes to Laphroaig’s unique flavor profile. Unlike standard tours, the Uisge experience foregoes basic explanations of whisky production, opting instead to highlight intricate details in a casual, conversational manner. A notable feature of our visit was the 30-minute hike to the distillery’s water source, where we enjoyed lunch beside the water on a wooden table put in place for this special tour. The lunch boxes that we had carried with us in small backpacks contained a hot soup, wraps, cheese, shortbread and fruitcake. Laphroaig-branded aluminum water bottles that we could take home with us had been filled at the distillery - great effort of the team to ditch single use plastic as much as possible. With the tour limited to eight participants, our group of five enjoyed an intimate setting that culminated in Warehouse No. 1, where we sampled whisky directly from three casks, each displaying unique characteristics. No spoilers, hence we will not disclose the specifics of these exceptional casks, preserving the element of discovery for future visitors. As a parting gift, each of us received a half-sized bottle of single cask whisky from Warehouse 1. We highly recommend the Uisge tour to those who seek a deeper understanding of peated whiskies through an insightful and relaxed experience. This tour is ideal for those who have done several distillery tours before and wish to bypass the commonplace. It is recommended to wear hiking shoes. The hike isn’t difficult at all, but you walk on different surfaces that might be slippery.

The best overall distillery experience I have had. The entire tour was great: our guide, a young man with long hair, was very professional and knowledgeable, yet friendly. We saw a malting floor (actually 2, at different stages) for the first time; he let us touch the barley at different stages of sprouting. We could go inside the malting kiln. We could taste the wort. Finally, the tasting was in a very laphroaig-style dark, inspiring room, with 3 drams available to choose from a selection of many - which is great because I knew already the core range. Finally, for a bit of fun, become "friend of laphroaig", wear the wellies, and head to the field in the back, to find a square-foot plot of land allocated just to yourself, and plant a flag! Overall, everything superb, truly oriented to the whisky experts and amateurs alike.

Had a very fun tour with Chris (aka David). A young lad with a clear passion for the spirit of Laphroaig. He was able to share the story and heritage and still maintain a down to Earth aloofness that kept everyone laughing. The industry needs more gentlemen like this who love their spirits and can entertain a crowd. Cheers, thank you for an amazing experience.
Alex Seidel — Google review
Laphroaig is my favorite drink on earth, so I was overwhelmed by the opportunity to see the stills themselves. The tour here is remarkable -- we were led this time by Richard, a tall, slim encyclopaedia of company knowledge and procedure. The best part of all was sampling drams in the cask warehouse, a high point of my young life. Certainly make this a priority if you're on the island.
Bill Scurry — Google review
Trip of a lifetime! We recently visited from the USA and enjoyed a wonderful tour, including seeing one of the only malting floors in operation on the island. Not only was the facility fun, the staff friendly, and the whisky amazing, but we were also graced with a gloriously sunny day. Laphroaig is one of the few that uses Islay peat and you can really taste the difference. Thank you Laphroaig for making our time on Islay so memorable!

It was a wonderful day. I did the hiking and water source tour. It was beautiful, Sorcha was perfect. We had fun, a big lunch all together, and 6 drams between the hike and the warehouse. I found the best smoky cheese of Islay. And some nice people from Canada. It was very nice indeed. Recommended to anyone who wants to have a different experience. It was one of the best distillery tour.

Bowmore Distillery, the oldest distillery in Islay, offers tours that showcase its history and whisky production. Located in a gated area of a quaint seaside village, it exudes an aura of mysticism with its 18th-century building and warm cereal aromas from the active malting floor. The Ultimate Bowmore Experience includes a visit to No.1 Vaults, Scotlands oldest barrelhouse, where visitors can experience an enchanted tasting using a whisky thief dipped into cask.
Fabulous distillery, free dram when you book a table in the tasting room, excellent choice of fabulous whiskies. Lovely staff.

Big thanks to Linn who led our tasting. So nice to talk with an Islay local and hear her genuine opinion on each whisky and a whole bunch of other things too :) I recommend the chocolate and whisky tasting to everyone, the chocolate is produced in Oban as well, which was a nice touch. We hadn't tried Bowmore whisky before, so the experience was a great discovery for us as well as a pleasure to meet Linn :) It was closed when we were there, but the bar has amazing views over the sea, definitely worth a stop there!

I had a marvelous experience on the Bowmore distillery tour: As it happened there were no other guests so I got a bespoke walkthrough care of my guide Evy. She was on top of each aspect of the plant, got me into countless tight spaces to see new angles of their operation, and best of all she decanted some of the most devastating spirits I've ever tasted in the cask warehouse. This tour is one for the books, do not miss it.

This place makes amazing whisky. It’s no wonder their one of the most collectable brands in scotch around the world. The distillery tour is excellent and shows you that they still today do a lot of the more traditional methods. I also recommend the tasting. Very worth the price and if you can, pick up a bottle of their limited release that they brought out for the Islay festival.

Full kitchen with gas, dishwasher and washer/dryer, a stone's throw from the Co-op, sleeps six, cute little back garden, looks over the Bowmore visitor centre AND it has a great view of the Sound with amazing sunsets. We were there for three nights and I would absolutely stay there again if given the opportunity.

The distillery dominates the landscape in Bowmore, just by the sea you are able walk either side of the distillery. If you've got time, a tour and tasting is well worth it. If not they do have a bar area upstairs with a view of the sea. Well worth a day trip in my opinion.

A warm welcome and informative tour around this scenic distillery. Lovely that there is a malting floor here and also that the peat furnace was in action adding cold smoke to the malted barley. The smell was delightful and the barley tasted wonderful. Lovely tasting afterwards. Staff all helpful and friendly. Highly recommended.

I had the greatest experience in Bowmore. Margaret (the guide) has roots in Bowmore more deep than the distillery itself. She made the experience so much better. We did in 5 the "Vault N1 distillery tour" with five different tasting and drivers dram to take home plus 100 ml of one of the valts whisky to take home. Absolutely ecstatic over everything. The girls at the shop very polite and cute. If you come to Islay, go to Bowmore and do the tour described above. Everything was safe and sound. We tried a bit of everything from turning the barley to the mashing (taste like smoky beer). My complaint is that there are not enough stars to give to Margaret and the team of Bowmore Distillery. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fantastic experience. Bowmore is the oldest distillery on Islay, now owned by Beam Suntory. The tour included a visit of their barley malting room, kiln, fermentation and distillation room. We also get to visit the first distillery warehouse on site! They have many rare bowmores at their bar. Their bar also opens til 4pm.

Located on the southern coast of an island, Ardbeg Distillery is a renowned 200-year-old establishment that offers guided tours with tasting sessions and water source walks. Its barrelhouses are situated near the ocean, allowing them to absorb the salty sea air, which adds a unique flavor profile to their whisky. The flagship expression is a 10-year-old malt that has been aged in ex-bourbon casks and is considered an excellent representation of Islay whisky.
Only a couple of options for vegan items but the chef is happy to alter items to make them vegan. There were no desserts on the menu but they happily made one from poached plums and mango sorbet.

Great tasting room space. Nice distillery to wander a bit. The restaurant was very good with good options. Highly recommend the smoked haddock chowder. Sadly the food trailer was not open the day we went. I had the limited edition tasting and wound up getting a bottle of the 8 y/o.

Ardbeg was our first whisky stop of the day, and it ended up being our favourite. We booked their core range tasting, the 5 drams were delicious. Emma took us through them all in detail answering our questions in a very professional yet friendly way. Jacquie assisted us further after the tasting too, recommending the Bowmore hotel to have a dram of their Serendipity (pity to waste it!) limited edition. We fell in love with it! In Ardbeg distillery we found a very cozy and friendly atmosphere, and the food truck outside did the trick offering a great venison steak pie. Totally recommended!

Always a great visit. The food is superb, the whisky options are plenty and there is a great amount of tasters available so you can try before you buy. When open and on a hot day the airstream offers some great food choices. Before coming to Islay Ardbeg wasn't a whisky I would ever seek out but having been I now always come back and get at least 1 bottle

Out of the 7 distilleries we visited on our trip, this was by far the least friendly, they were more interested in selling their gimmicky products, than giving you a excellent customer experience. We could not believe that the distillery was closed on the Easter weekend, both days! This is the ONLY distillery that did not offer a free tasting or drivers dram, there were no experienced staff to give you that Islay whisky experience, visitors deserve. When my husband visited 15 years ago, he had a completely different experience, and throughly enjoyed his visit. This WAS his favourite distillery, so visiting it again on his 50th birthday this year should have been a wonderful treat, sadly not. Terrible to book tours, terrible costumer service! Extremely unhelpful!

The core range tasting at Ardbeg today was not very good. Rather than than getting some background information about the history of the distillery, how the whisky is made and what is special about it, what we got instead was a very superficial introduction to each whisky expression, which we could have read on the bottle. Good news is that we did have some water on the table for the tasting but the bad news is this was tapwater with a very strong chlorine odour. 😝 While other island distilleries are making a special effort by to take care of their visiting customers, seems like Ardbeg doesn’t care very much. On a positive note, the steak pies from the food truck were delicious!

Thank you so much to Emma for hosting us on the drams at the dam walking tour. Emma was an awsome host, and made an extra big effort to look after our 4 year old and baby on the trip. She was full of knowledge, had the biggest bag of drams I've ever seen, and generally couldn't have been a more excellent person. Best tour of our stay.

We had a wonderful time at Ardbeg, where we took a distillery tour, and ate lunch twice in three days. Ron, our tour guide, was exceptional and engaging. The food in the cafe was very good, and the staff all around could not have been nicer. I haven’t even mentioned the whisky yet; perhaps you’re already a fan of Ardbeg if you’re stopping by to visit, but if not you’ll be in for some a treat!

We went to Ardbeg for a casual visit and ended up doing a full distillery tour. Ron, our tour guide, was great and extremely knowledgeable & passionate. He really made the experience thoroughly fun & enjoyable for us. The distillery walkthrough also included some sample tastings during the tour which was a good plus. Ardbeg is situated right at the coast and offers breathtaking view of the sea. We even tried some hot chowder soup at the in-house restaurant and it was simply the best. Do also checkout the store for some good souvenirs and some nice whisky. Overall, thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

Rebecca led our group through a comprehensive look at one of the finest whiskies on earth, and every step of the process was exhibited to get the best view of how this spirit gets to the bottle. The production floor is state of the art, and the expertise with how they design new expressions is stunning. If you're fortunate the tour will end on the back pier, with a stunning view of Port Ellen harbor.

Even if you don't think their whisky is the best on Islay no doubt the tour is! Very informative. They are now part of the LVMH family so I expect we'll hear more about them over time.

I loved this distillery. They were so nice and accommodating especially when it came to making a non milk drink for my wife and daughter due to allergies. They didn't ask but when above and beyond. Loved the flavors of the whiskey they had here and ending up with a nice one you can't get in the states. Really cool place.

I go here for the "Haddock Chowder" 🤍Best ever and a delight to wander round the distillery. Nice wee visit 🥃when in Islay . A beautiful shop with the finest whisky to give someone as a very special gift .🤍

We took the distillery tour And enjoyed it very much. The tour ended with tasting 5 of Ardbeg’s familiar expressions but nothing that was extremely rare or distillery exclusive. Still, good tour, amazing sea view, very cool branding and nice Whisky!

Had an amazing classic distillery tour with Eva at Ardbeg on a recent Saturday in late July 2023. Her family has had many connections with the distillery for generations and she was able to share her memories growing up on Islay as well as all the info on the distillery. Even if you’ve done distillery tours other places she gave enough Ardbeg specific info that it’s worth it. We got to taste 3 whiskies along the way and keep a little branded taster glass. Only sad thing is that the cafe and the food trucks are closed Saturdays, the only day of the week that they are closed. Food outside of Port Ellen is hard to find here so it was a bit of the bummer.

Seafood restaurant
SeaSalt Bistro & Takeaway, located in Port Ellen, is a popular dining spot offering diverse lunch and dinner menus as well as a takeaway service. The restaurant prides itself on its contemporary cuisine, featuring freshly made pizza, pasta dishes, seafood, steaks, and daily specials using locally sourced ingredients such as Islay-landed lobster, langoustines, scallops, and Argyll beef.
We were there for lunch. We ordered the seafood platter and I can honestly say it was fresh and delicious. The waitress was attentive and the atmosphere was good. It was a really nice spot to enjoy lunch in Port Ellen.

We were on Islay for only a few days, staying in Port Ellen, but we two dinners and a lunch at Sea Salt—not just because it was conveniently close, but the food was already great, the menu quite varied without being paralyzingly long, and the staff were so friendly. The pizzas are especially tasty, and don’t hesitate to try something unique like the black pudding and red onion jam one!
Ben Zamora-Weiss — Google review
Great food! I really recommend this bistro! One of the best pizzas I’ve had (goat cheese and onion marmalade married well!). Friendly, super nice personnel and fast service. Reserve ahead! We got lucky and got a last-minute table. Port Ellen might seem quiet but this place is popular. Only downside is the really loud atmosphere; some dampening would make this a 11 on a scale of 10 😊 Such a gem!
Jenni P — Google review
I visited the restaurant and was disappointed by both the quality of the white wine and the response from management when I brought it up. The wine tasted off, possibly oxidized, indicating it was not fresh. I expected a prompt and thoughtful resolution, but unfortunately, the issue was not taken seriously, and no satisfactory resolution was provided. This experience has impacted my view of what I expected to be a reputable dining venue. I hope to see improvements in both product quality and customer service. Food was ok, lobster was a bit tough but fresh enough. The waiter was very polite but the very disappointed in the management.

Fantastic food, friendly staff. We booked a table via the online email service and got a response quickly to confirm our booking. Not many places to eat in Port Ellen, this is one of the best.

Service was quick and very courteous. The oysters were fresh and the catch of the day happened to be monk fish which was excellent. Worth the visit and would be interested in trying dinner at this place.

Went there three times - on a three day visit! It was THAT good! The full Scottish breakfast was great (had never heard of Lorna sausage before - it was delicious!), as was the French toast with maple syrup and bacon. For main courses we had the seared tuna, the gambas, the chicken with chimichurri and the scallops with parmesan risotto and as a side we got the garlic bread with cheese. We also tried the Whisky Cranachan for dessert - yummy! They were all amazing! I wholeheartedly recommend and will definitely be back the next time I'm on Islay!

It's very expensive for such small portions, the staff are friendly. There is limited seating but they also offer takeaway.

Called in last minute and managed to get a table without booking. The place was very busy but the staff and owner were very accomodating. Great fresh food especially the fish which was delicious and cooked to perfection. Would definitely go again when back on Islay.

Friendly staff, great food. It's not fancy restaurant fare, but it's really excellent pizza. The person who had scallops said they were really good. They also do take-out, but if you want to eat in during the evening, it's probably best to book.
Emily Forrester — Google review
The food is good but not great. We had the roast chicken and the fillet. They were just under seasoned and a little bland. Still god and juicy just not amazing. Large portions, good onion rings and excellent cheesy garlic bread. Probably the seafood is the best bet but my husband and I just don’t like seafood. The service is excellent fast and friendly.

Very handy spot in Port Ellen. Always busy and a good and varied menu. If anything a little dear but the service is very good and the staff are super helpful. Fish and chips was huge and very tasty

We ate here twice on a short stay and it would’ve been three times if they opened on Monday! We had garlic bread with cheese, scallops, fish and chips, smoked haddock risotto and roast chicken and enjoyed every dish. The whisky in the Cranachan was hard to detect but as we’d just done the 3 distilleries, we’re giving the chef a pass on this one 😊. Great food, a lovely welcome and service from the team, definitely worth a visit.

Really lovely restaurant in the heart of Port Ellen! We had absolutely 5 star service from our waiter Su (we hope we got his name right!) who was so theatrical and keen to share info on the menu ingredients. All the food was so fresh and you could taste that it was made with high quality ingredients. Loved that there was plenty of vegetarian options too - including the beautiful soup of the day (Courgette and Pepper). Honestly would recommend to anyone - and huge thanks to our amazing waiter!!

Ordered three takeaway pizzas, which we ate because we'd been at sea all day and we'd have eaten anything. The pizzas are advertised as 12 inches, but all three were only 10 inches. This might sound trivial, but a 12 inch pizza is actually 44% larger than a 10 inch pizza, which means we were missing a lot of pizza! The toppings were poor quality - clearly reformed chicken and cheap salami etc. and all pizzas were undercooked, the bases being more bread than crispy. This place seems weird; on one hand they charge people £30 for scallops and chips, on the other hand they knock out undersized pizzas topped with rubbish as well as doner kebabs. For over forty quid for three pizzas, they should be exceptional quality. Wouldn't recommend.

The Islay Hotel is situated in the fishing village of Port Ellen on the Whisky Coast, overlooking the harbour and marina. The hotel offers excellent breakfast and dinner options, as well as a high level of service.
We stayed here 7 months ago & had a fantastic experience. The rooms were so comfortable and perfect for our needs with an 11 month old. The location was perfect for walking to many places. The restaurant for breakfast every morning was amazing & so delicious, as was our dinner there one evening. The bar was so nice & we enjoyed listening to the music one evening with the locals. Our first visit to Islay was made perfect by staying here! Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

Overpriced and very unfriendly. This weekend, my partner and I have tried on two occasions to go for a drink here. On both occasions the ‘bar was full’ - possibly quite legitimately as a result of seated-only Covid policies. However on both occasions there was no ‘sorry’ and we were both looked up and down before judgment was passed down. This makes us somewhat suspicious. The previous day my father in law did manage to get in for a drink and was charged £11 for a single whisky. The barman admitted, when questioned on the price, that they charge a rather large tourist premium. For my partner, as a Scot visiting from London, being out-snobbed by a 4* hotel on Islay was a bit of a shock. Do what we did and go to No. 1 Charlotte Street around the corner for a more authentically Scottish welcome, and a full range of reasonably-priced Islay single malts.
Oliver Toop — Google review
It was my 2nd visit after 3 years. Had better memories and higher expectations. Slightly overpriced for the quality you get. I had a smoked fish platter for starter. Coming from a place next to the north sea, I can say the taste was just okay. Also the amount of fish was too little (1 small piece of each). That could have been compensate with the salad that came with it, but it was also barely a hand full. As main I had the softshell crab burger. Taste wasn't convincing. It tasted more like fried eggs than crab. From a crab burger, I expect crab taste. Service was alright, but not very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately there isn't too many options on the island.

Absolutely gorgeous hotel on an ideal location in Port Ellen. We used this for our last night on Islay, which was very handy because we had the early ferry of 7am and the terminal is almost around the corner. Very friendly people and great food!!! They were very pet friendly which for us is very important. We have visited this hotel as part of our 1-year-through-Europe-tour, which we have started 3 weeks ago (together with James, our Australian Labradoodle). Was here one year ago and was impressed by both the service and the whiskey selection. This visit, however, proved underwhelming. (1) the bar didn’t even have a whiskey list and the vast majority of interesting / rare whiskeys that were available last year were no longer available; (2) my table ordered chicken wings as an appetizer, fish and chips, and a fish special. Food took more than 40 minutes to come out. Absolutely will not be returning on subsequent visits to Islay.

Beautiful hotel! We actually came here just for breakfast. We came with a group and we got the Scottish breakfast, the salmon croissant and the ham and cheese croissant. Everything was very good! We also ordered latte's and Americano coffee. Everything was great! Would highly recommend.

We dined in the restaurant for lunch with a large group of 10 including small children. We were able to walk in without a reservation and we seated straight away. Restaurant staff were super friendly and patient with kids. Menu was creative and had options for dietary requirements/allergies including gluten free and dairy free. Portions were large and food high quality and delicious. Cosy atmosphere. Plenty of free street parking. Dog friendly. Definitely recommend.

Hugely overpriced, stagnant bar with no atmosphere. They're clearly trying to set an upmarket tone, but missing by miles and just over pricing down to a lack of choice in the area. I wouldn't come back.

We ate at the restaurant, BEST meal in a week! We wish we'd gotten 4 of the scallop appetizer, it was sweet, buttery, and perfectly cooked. I LOVED the salmon entree, juicy with a perfect crispness on top, and the pesto/parmesan potatoes and arugula were delicious. The crab bisque was sublime, not overly creamy like so many are. Great wine and whiskey menus. Make a reservation, you'll be so glad you experienced this restaurant.

Excellent food for both breakfast and dinner - a top notch chef who knows what he’s doing, might surprise those unfamiliar with such an unassuming wee town. But it was Nigel the waiter who made every evening a great laugh. Kind with a biting sense of humour, he’s the host you’ve always wanted. The team around him is likewise as welcoming as he, and so this was a restaurant we returned to three nights in a row.

We had an evening meal here in the bar. The staff were so helpful and friendly and the food was delicious. They had a great children's menu (we have a 5 yr old). We also thought it was good value for money considering the quality so good.

Lovely dinner with a inch of creativity with the traditional local staples. I would highly recommend the crab and peat smoked mussels entree which was delicious and the venison fruit pie with peat smoked mash and a whisky sauce. Also they feature décents wines (I know we are in whisky territory but we all need a break now and then!) offerings are typical and appropriate with reasonable prices. Service is fast and friendly but booking are essential to get in.

We can not recommend this hotel highly enough. The staff, led by Nigel, make it an incredibly special place. Andy, the chef, is superb and we were pleased to eat there most nights! Nothing was too much trouble, including adding sticky toffee pudding to the dessert menu on request (it was outstanding!) Our room was beautiful and the extra touches, such as the fresh coffee and cafetiere in the room, were much appreciated. Thank you to the whole team for making our holiday extra special.

Great place to stay. The staff were lovely, some friendlier than other, which made them exceptionally nice! My room was great, although quite dark with a couple of lights not working. Comfy bed and modern bath/shower. It was very clean. Good was delicious, although I guess they ran out of mushrooms, on the 2nd morning I got half of one! Great view over the view at breakfast.

My husband and I had dinner here twice due to the overwhelming positive recommendations we received for the food. The service was great, the views were wonderful, but the food was just okay. We went back a second night to see if the first night was was just back luck, but no. There were several notices posted that they were dealing with some staffing issues due to COVID, so I'm assuming we might have just visited at a rough time. I'd be happy to try again on our next visit to Islay.

It was a nice cozy stay there, the room was tiny but super sweet, cozy and had a nice view to the sea. The bathroom was a dream, nice shower and all brand new. The Bar is a dream for everyone who Loves a good glass of whisky, or two or may more, but be careful, or you may need a appointment with your bank accounts :). The Bartender, a young Man was the perfect match to the Bar, he could nearly tell to all of my drinks something. Really a pleasure to met him. I will always recommend this hotel and hope to come back in summer to enjoy the wildlife nature of the the Islay. Nik

We had the best 4 nights at this hotel this week. It is located within a 5 minute walk of anything you'd need in Bowmore. The views across the loch from the restaurant were a fantastic accompaniment to wonderful food. The Port Charlotte Hotel is a 19th-century building located on Main Street in Argyll. It offers a cosy restaurant and whisky bar, and its outdoor seating allows guests to enjoy the scenic surroundings of the town. The team here is highly attentive, and provides visitors with an excellent experience. This is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed at, and we highly recommend it.
Recently had the pleasure of visiting Islay as a group of ten. We booked at the pub for dinner and drinks and we’re not disappointed! A lovely warm welcome, beautiful service, great food, cosy atmosphere and even the added bonus of traditional music in the evening. Great selection of whisky to boot. A really lovely experience, with very lovely people and very good food. Particularly impressed with the whisky selection in the bar. I know this is Islay and there is an expectation of whisky everywhere, but somebody has clearly paid attention with good taste and thought when assembling the collection (and charge reasonably for it).

I’d read of Islay being very welcoming and a place of kind people, unfortunately I did not find it here from the management. Spent a day at the bar spending money then was rudely asked to leave two hours prior to a reservation on my table because I’d been there too long, even though the bar was empty. They seemed annoyed that I charged my laptop equivalent to a whole 4p of electricity. Won’t be revisiting. That said the staff were nice until this point and regards to the chef as the chowder was very nice.

This was our first visit to Islay, and Port Charlotte Hotel was a perfect base. The whole team were welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. John Sedgwick — Google review
The hotel is charming and very well located. Dinner was good too; we had fish and chips and posh fish and chips. Until here all correct. Nevertheless, I have to say that the rooms 5 and 6 have not a lot of privacy, you can hear / listen to everything: the conversations, the snoring, flushing… is odd when you cross your “neighbors” in the morning at breakfast time, no need to ask them “How they slept”. My main complaint is the extra cost of accommodating two pups: 20 pounds per day, per dog! I can understand being charged, however at that price you expect something else more than have to have them locked in the room because they cannot be in another place in the hotel, not in the bar, neither in the lounge… 80 pounds and nothing for them! no bowls, no bed, no blankets. In other places we have had that for free. On top of that the room was very small, with the luggage and the beds for the dogs (yes, we travel with them) it was like and obstacle field. The feeding and water bowls did not even fit in the bathroom! In my humble opinion, that’s not the definition of a puppy friendly establishment. Call it “dogs allowed in the room” but not dare to say that you are puppy friendly hotel. If traveling with dogs avoid Port Charlotte Hotel.

The Port Charlotte Hotel is a gem on Islay. It has a great classic coach or old world feel. Some of the best staff we encountered on our tour of the Islands and Highlands. From Moira at the reception desk, the lovely ladies in the dining room, or Gary behind the bar, everyone was the best!! The rooms were great with great coastal views. The food was all excellent and the bar serves some of the best drams from Islay and Jura.

Just ate in the restaurant. Not cheap. New menu had just started, so a couple of items not available. Group of 6. The food was excellent. Service very good but relatively inexperienced it seemed. If aiming for high end, things like spotting empty table water bottles, excess or unused glasses etc need to be picked up. Main thing, no espresso coffee available. Also suggest separate Google entries for the restaurant and bar (it does food too) in addition to the hotel as the review is not food focused.

What a wonderful evening we spent in this restaurant. The staff was extremely friendly and did everything possible to make us feel welcomed and special during the evening. Food was also wonderful : I had the venison, perfectly cooked, with a glass of Malbec and my wife had the posh fish & chips, which was delicious as well. As desserts, I took the Highland & Island cheese platter paired with a glass of Ardbeg, my wife the chocolate fondant. Both great!

The village of Port Charlotte is far from the relatively bustling Bowmore, thereby making it a hotel destination for an ideal boutique experience. The proprietor Isabelle has a knack for the personalized experience, so your time in the hotel feels like a homecoming. The kitchen is fabulous, much better than perhaps necessary, and the atmosphere around the deep whisky bar is worth spending a few drams a night around. I couldn’t have hoped for a finer Islay lodging.

This hotel is the epitome of hospitality! The rooms were luxurious - I loved the shower - and the staff went above and beyond every day to make our stay there comfortable. They really take care with the breakfast as well! I've never had more delicious porridge! Before this stay I never would have thought porridge could be so memorable! The view from the dining room was spectacular morning and night. We had dinner there one evening and it was a delight as well. The menu had a lot of variety and all of the dishes we had were wonderful. While staying on Islay this hotel was our cozy little oasis and I can't recommend it enough!

Fantastic restaurant. Really easy to reserve a table online and a fantastic view from the restaurant over the bay. We had a great selection of whisky to choose from, with a detailed guidebook explaining each option. We really enjoyed sipping various whiskeys and comparing notes whilst waiting for lunch - a throughly good past-time! Lunch was excellent too, as was the customer service.

Fab Hotel, the location is beautiful, we wish we stayed longer! Room was clean, comfy bed, lovely little toiletries. Excellent service, staff are friendly and so welcoming. The food was amazing, only down side was there was only one vegetarian option at dinner. Great selection for breakfast. We would love to go back and stay again one day.

Creative, tasty and original dishes at a fair price. Excellent service and a good atmosphere. Great, fresh ingredients. We would certainly come back here for food and beers. The staff here are very friendly, attentive and professional - this is clearly a very well run establishment. The only reason I haven't awarded 5 stars is that we were disappointed to see how inflated the whisky prices have become. But everything else was absolutely excellent in both the bar and the restaurant.

Super experience, great staff, nice rooms and fine food. Breakfast pancakes and deep fried halloumi starter were particular favourites. Location perfect for doing all the things you need to do on Islay, mostly visiting the great distilleries! Would have been good if their bar had been open but maybe next time.

Had a lovely evening meal here, complete with a glorious view of the sea loch and fresh oysters with Bowmore Whisky (Oyster Luge) and tasting seafood entrees. The service was very friendly, and they are just starting up again after a long downtime due to the pandemic. Excellent place to eat in Bowmore if looking an classy but unpretentious venue.

Rooms were of a high standard and location is right in the centre of Bowmore. The meals at night were really good and the fish dishes were excellent. The service I received by the people here was second to none, they went out of their way to make sure we had a great time.

Superb service! Great whisky (had the Bowmore tasting menu) and exceptional Islay oysters! We had venison, scallops (excellent!) and Mac and cheese (best ever!). Everything was tasty. Well worth the visit
