Port Ellen

Port Ellen is a small town on the island of Islay, in Argyll, Scotland. The town is named after the wife of its founder, Walter Frederick Campbell. Its previous name, Leòdamas, is derived from Old Norse meaning "Leòd's Harbour". Port Ellen is built around Leodamais Bay, Islay's main deep water harbour. Wikipedia.

Laphroaig Distillery

Food & Drink
Laphroaig Distillery, which holds a Royal Warrant, offers tours that showcase the whisky-making process and include tastings. The distillery is known for producing highly peaty malts and takes pride in this reputation. Visitors can also take walks to see the water source used in production. Standing in the parking lot between the still house and the sea, one can experience the unique convergence of new-make spirit vapors with ocean air before entering the historic facility.
We had the Warehouse 1 Tasting experience and it was amazing. You get to taste 3 drams of whiskey unavailable anywhere, and you get to take home 2 bottles of the ones you liked. Also, you learn about how they age and the casks, and drinks amazing whiskey all in the warehouse where they age. It's an amazing scenery, smell, and tasting experience. You also get to take home the tasting glasses in padded boxes so you can put in your check in luggage in case you're flying.

Laphroaig distillery is set in a gorgeous bay on Islay. The tour guide was knowledgeable and had some very good recommendations. The tour had multiple options for tastings and offered driving drams for those not drinking. The bar was a little lacking for those wanting some rare drams, but had a nice selection of the core range. The shop has a nice variety and we found our plot and collected our rent (5cl bottle) for being 'friends of Laphroaig'.

Rented bikes to go along the three distillery trail with the 1st stop at Laphroaig. The have a nice little museum you can walk around with your dram. They also have coffee which was nice in the morning. I got the distillery exclusive flight which was very very good. I even got to check out my 1 SF plot of land I aquired when I bought a bottle years ago. Loved it!

Visiting Laphroaig was a dream come true! The home of my favourite whisky has been on my 'to visit' list for a number of years and getting to see where it comes from has left me with a greater appreciation of the life and love that goes into producing such a fantastic tipple. Nestled in a bay, the distillery benefits from beautiful views out to sea, catch the sun at the right time of day and it'll firmly etch itself within your favourite memories. The whisky tasting in Warehouse 1 with Sorcha was an education and a great laugh. Sampling 3 unique whiskies and walking away with a bottle of one is an extra little treat that will ensure I'll remember the place when back at home with a glass of it in my hand. We visited on the day when Distillery Manager John Campbell was leaving, our tasting was slightly disrupted by the fact that he was giving a speech to staff. As a 'thank you' for our patience John signed a dram for us. At the distillery they've ensured that the history of the place hasn't been lost. The visitor experience was, as a result, very intimate. They haven't built a big gift shop or seating/dining like other distilleries on the island. This is authentic! Thanks Sorcha, thanks John, thanks Laphroaig!

We were blown away by how welcoming and warm the people are here at Laphroaig. Our tour was great fun and informative. The sense of fun and friendliness swept through the place from all the staff to the customers who if like me felt at home there just chatting to people from all over the world. I’ve always loved their products now I love the place and the people that make it too. Can’t recommend this place enough

Considering it's the top reason we chose to visit Scotland, and one we traveled all the way from Kansas city to enjoy, this experience did not disappoint. From the whisky to the staff, to the coziness of the tasting room and cleanliness of the restrooms, everything was above and beyond expectations. Complimentary coffee and tea were provided at a nice side table for customers to enjoy. Crisps, oatcakes, and cheese all available for purchase. Staff was hospitable, welcoming and did not made you feel like a local. Customers ranged from golfers to cyclists to just plane tourists (us), and all were welcome. The tasting room offered a variety of seating including leather chairs to relax and sink into while you taste your way through the smooth and smokey samples. I will definitely be coming back and hope to do the triple tour with the bikes, that many had mentioned while on the island. Thank you Laphroaig for making our trip to Scotland such an enjoyable experience!

With limited availability on tours, I settled on booking a slot in the shop. Laphroaig are taking CV19 very seriously which is fair enough, just one + case could wipe out most of their workforce! The shop is well stocked and the staff were very helpful in offering tasters. My ultimate highlight was returning the next day via paddleboard along the coast, which provides some excellent views! Hope to visit again soon and have a tasting tour!

One of the best tours I've taken. If possible do the 4 hour tour! The Tour guides will answer any questions you have. AND of course an excellent tasting process throughout the tour. I will come back when I visit Scotland again!

Lovely coastal site with comfortable indoor and outdoor seating areas. Complementary tasting of one of their many offerings. 'Tasting ' menus also available. Prices of products vary from reasonable to ludicrous. Very pleasant staff. Very relaxed atmosphere (weekday visit). 45 minute walk from town or easy cycle ride along smooth off-road path.

This has to be the best alternative to doing a distillery tour. We were invited to visit the bar for a welcome dram where we were treated to the excellent 2023 Càirdeas release. We followed that up a very well priced tasting flight comprising 4 different batches of the 10yo cask strength. In addition to a copy of the tasting notes the host also gave us a great overview of each of the drams. If you’ve only tried the “standard” Laphroaig, these whiskies will show you another side to what’s on offer here. Definitely reignited my love for the brand and a Batch 12 is on its way!

Fantastic tour, very friendly and accommodating staff, would highly recommend this distillery! We went to Laphroaig distillery today and was shown round by our tour guide Alice who was extremely helpful, informative and kind towards our group. The tour was fantastic and a dream come true as my favourite whisky is Laphroaig. Our trip to Islay has been amazing and only made better by the staffs accommodation. 10/10 tour 100/10 staff 1000/10 whisky

OMG! We absolutely loved this tour. MacKayla was an awesome guide! We loved the location, loved the fact that they had complimentary coffee and a beautiful lounge area. On top of that, they have nice tables outside where you can sip and enjoy your time there. If I could do anything differently, I would have just spent more time here. We had to rush a little bit because we had another tour 15 min once this ended. Additional tip: we absolutely would recommend the tour where you bottle your own bottle. It was an unforgettable experience!

We recently enjoyed the 'Uisge' tour at Laphroaig Distillery, a bespoke journey designed for enthusiasts who desire a more profound connection with the distillery’s craft. The Gaelic name 'Uisge,' meaning 'water,' reflects the tour's core element: hiking to the water source to enjoy a lovely lunch box and a wee dram (or several…). After getting a welcome dram at the bar that also provides free coffee and tea for visitors, our tour commenced on the malting floor and continued through to the kiln, where we saw (and smelled) the peat fire that contributes to Laphroaig’s unique flavor profile. Unlike standard tours, the Uisge experience foregoes basic explanations of whisky production, opting instead to highlight intricate details in a casual, conversational manner. A notable feature of our visit was the 30-minute hike to the distillery’s water source, where we enjoyed lunch beside the water on a wooden table put in place for this special tour. The lunch boxes that we had carried with us in small backpacks contained a hot soup, wraps, cheese, shortbread and fruitcake. Laphroaig-branded aluminum water bottles that we could take home with us had been filled at the distillery - great effort of the team to ditch single use plastic as much as possible. With the tour limited to eight participants, our group of five enjoyed an intimate setting that culminated in Warehouse No. 1, where we sampled whisky directly from three casks, each displaying unique characteristics. No spoilers, hence we will not disclose the specifics of these exceptional casks, preserving the element of discovery for future visitors. As a parting gift, each of us received a half-sized bottle of single cask whisky from Warehouse 1. We highly recommend the Uisge tour to those who seek a deeper understanding of peated whiskies through an insightful and relaxed experience. This tour is ideal for those who have done several distillery tours before and wish to bypass the commonplace. It is recommended to wear hiking shoes. The hike isn’t difficult at all, but you walk on different surfaces that might be slippery.

The best overall distillery experience I have had. The entire tour was great: our guide, a young man with long hair, was very professional and knowledgeable, yet friendly. We saw a malting floor (actually 2, at different stages) for the first time; he let us touch the barley at different stages of sprouting. We could go inside the malting kiln. We could taste the wort. Finally, the tasting was in a very laphroaig-style dark, inspiring room, with 3 drams available to choose from a selection of many - which is great because I knew already the core range. Finally, for a bit of fun, become "friend of laphroaig", wear the wellies, and head to the field in the back, to find a square-foot plot of land allocated just to yourself, and plant a flag! Overall, everything superb, truly oriented to the whisky experts and amateurs alike.

Had a very fun tour with Chris (aka David). A young lad with a clear passion for the spirit of Laphroaig. He was able to share the story and heritage and still maintain a down to Earth aloofness that kept everyone laughing. The industry needs more gentlemen like this who love their spirits and can entertain a crowd. Cheers, thank you for an amazing experience.

Laphroaig is my favorite drink on earth, so I was overwhelmed by the opportunity to see the stills themselves. The tour here is remarkable -- we were led this time by Richard, a tall, slim encyclopaedia of company knowledge and procedure. The best part of all was sampling drams in the cask warehouse, a high point of my young life. Certainly make this a priority if you're on the island.

Trip of a lifetime! We recently visited from the USA and enjoyed a wonderful tour, including seeing one of the only malting floors in operation on the island. Not only was the facility fun, the staff friendly, and the whisky amazing, but we were also graced with a gloriously sunny day. Laphroaig is one of the few that uses Islay peat and you can really taste the difference. Thank you Laphroaig for making our time on Islay so memorable!

It was a wonderful day. I did the hiking and water source tour. It was beautiful, Sorcha was perfect. We had fun, a big lunch all together, and 6 drams between the hike and the warehouse. I found the best smoky cheese of Islay. And some nice people from Canada. It was very nice indeed. Recommended to anyone who wants to have a different experience. It was one of the best distillery tour.
