Bistro
The Steam Bistro, a renowned restaurant in Coniston, offers a delightful dining experience with its diverse selection of pasta, hotpots, and globally inspired dishes. Guests can also indulge in their mouth-watering stacked burgers, locally sourced meat dishes, and indulgent cakes. The bistro takes pride in its eco-friendly practices by providing plastic-free and biodegradable takeaway packaging.
We love Steam. First visit since they opened up again after covid. They are not licensed, so you take your own alcohol and are only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Booking is a must. They do alot of vegetarian options and are very good at catering for all intolerances. Two courses for £28.95, three for £32.95 and they charged us £2.50 per person for corkage. Excellent value for money. Food and service is second to none.

Food is freshly made from locally sourced ingredients. This does mean that the prices are higher than some alternatives and there is a substantial wait. Our breakfasts took roughly 45mins to arrive, even though we were the only people in the cafe at the time. Staff chatting loudly together in the front of house slightly marred the experience.

Delicious food and very friendly and attentive staff. Really lovely atmosphere, and made our weekend away even more enjoyable.

Amazing food!!! Chris was welcoming and attentive giving recommendations off the menu but I suspect it was all amazing. Thoroughly enjoyed all our choices-the beef was so succulent. Don’t miss out and make sure you book.

I can keep this review short... The best 3 course meal I have eaten (and I eat out a lot) in the UK for as long as I can remember!!! The decor, ambience and service was first class too.

A Very Special Thank you to the Staff at The Steam Bistro, who were so Very Helpful and Accommodating in helping me out with a Table for 2, Despite my Error, as I'd Booked for the Friday night, and it was Saturday ( errrr) nothing was to much Trouble, we had a small Wait, understandably as it was a Busy weekend ( Bank Holiday weekend) Fantastic Service, Devine Food, A Superb atmosphere, Really can't say Enough about the Experience... Top quality food which was very reasonably priced. The bang bang chicken burger was incredible. By far our best meal in the Lakes so far and definitely the best place to eat in Coniston. Gutted we discovered it on our last day of the holiday!! Thank you so much for such a brilliant dining experience

Absolutely amazing food! Such a nice chill vibe and really nice pleasant staff. Best meal we’ve had out in a long, long time and everything is so reasonably priced too. Our new fav restaurant! Blown away. Props to the chef what a queen.

A wonderful and cosy place. The food and coffee were excellent. The staff are friendly and patient. They helped customise our order. Their patty with homemade ketchup and soup with 2 different kinds of bread were delicious. Highly recommend this place

5 stars are not enough to rate this amazing little family run bistro. We went for one of their pop-up evneing openings andI can honestly say that this was one of the best meals I have ever had. The pop-up menu consists of fixed price 3 courses with 4 choices for each course. The food that I had was simply brilliant. I can not recommend this charming & friendly restaurant any higher.

Additionally, the cafe is known for its cozy atmosphere, making it a popular spot for cyclists, bikers, hikers, and locals to enjoy food and drinks.
What a wonderful find ! Lovely helpful, friendly staff that are very doggy friendly and are really understanding about Gluten Free food and being a Coeliac. So reassuring!! A separate fryer for crispy fries and so switched on. Fab food !
Janet Hindle — Google review
Nice place, great courgette and fennel soup of the day and the random woman I sat opposite who had an eye patch and a wooden leg said she enjoyed the lamb pasty a lot but we both agreed it was very expensive. More like restaurant prices for a cafe quick pit stop. I’ve hardly been able to buy any courgettes this year and none of my plants grew yet these fellas have so many that they’re blending them up and making soup out the little blighters.
Martin Ball — Google review
We have been in here a few times for drinks in a morning & decided to have a spot of lunch in here today. We went for toasted sandwiches which were delicious. The staff were very helpful & friendly. Dog friendly which is lovely. If you are in the area you should definitely visit here.

Lovely clean cafe in Coniston. Had a lovely flat white with oat milk. Dog friendly....without a doubt. They even have wee rugs for your dog to lie on. Staff super friendly and they treated all the dogs so well. Almost didn't need to feed my dogs last night after all their treats Great cafe....highly recommend 👏👏👏👏👏

I would have written this review initially just for food & hospitality - a cute cafe with comfy vibes. Cakes were fresh & delicious. I had visited them twice in a row for the cakes. They do brunch (both veg & non-veg options too). But its not yet another cafe in Coniston - I left behind my purse with quite alot of valuables & the kind staff not only just kept it safely for two days but helped in dispatching it back to me :) Do we still have such kindness around ? I am just very deeply moved with this token of gratitude shown by the staff in the cafe. Can't recommend this cafe enough. Please do visit them. This small business with such strong values catered & rooted in your business is going long way. Rooting for them & its gonna be a pit stop for every summer Lake district trip. Thanks again to all the staff of Herdwicks cafe. Much love & gratitude <3 :)

I forgot to take photos of the Bacon and Egg baps before they were gone !! Suppose it says it all. Four large bits of bacon and runny egg ! To nice to just leave sitting there. Nice little cafe with great service and lovely bacon ! Well worth a visit.

Welcome rest after a very wet and windy trip over Wetherlam. Lovely cup of loose leaf tea and the most enormous and tasty sausage roll. Salted caramel Tiffin in the background was a great finish! Café is nice and airy for wet walkers.
Andy Hine — Google review
This place is clean (even though the place welcomes dogs) the food is exceptional I had a double egg bap , my partner had a tuna sandwich the garnish was a work of art with dressings to suit the plate, the teas we had were loose leaf served in Pyrex pots and was English breakfast brewed perfectly (I like my tea STRONG)
Bill Lockwood — Google review
Delicious and well presented food, friendly, bubbly, cheerful staff, with a great food selection to choose from. The menu is a little expensive, but the quality of the food and staff really are reflective in the price. It's a dog friendly café, with a kids menu, that gives a 10% discount for cyclists, and is open on a Tuesday, which seems to go against the local flow of other eateries in the area. Fabulous experience, happy tongues, happy tummy's, happy smiles. Would return (wallet allowing). 4.8 stars 🤩

Very cute place. Proper dog friendly, beautiful cakes and really good coffee. Very cosy , warm and welcoming

This was a nice cafe. We didn't have a meal, just a coffee and cake. The coffee was really nice. The cafe itself has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and if you have a dog, they are welcomed - even have their own biscuits!
Louise Green — Google review
Lovely cafe with indoor and outdoor seating which is off the main road. It’s dog friendly and staff are welcoming and friendly. Marked down a star because how expensive the food is - such as £10 for a jacket potato with 1 topping. The service was also a little slow on that day but we weren’t in a rush.
Cheska Primrose — Google review
Wonderful Dog Friendly Cafe Absolutely fantastic coffee shop in Coniston. We had teacakes and coffee and both were excellent. The coffee and walnut cake was also delicious. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. The made a special fuss of our dog too. Would definitely recommend this outstanding coffee shop. Thank you.

Come here for food instead of the hotels on the high street. Lovely service, great food and amazing views. Not to mention the fact that it's off the road so you get a bit of peace and quiet! Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating area and dog friendly as well!

Had a delicious mint hot chocolate here in the middle of the afternoon after a chilly hike. A local farmer recommended Herdwicks as a great place to come for a hot drink and a sit down - he wasn’t wrong! Staff were very friendly; the atmosphere was great with cyclists, bikers and hikers all enjoying food and drinks.

The Green Housekeeper is the best cafe in Coniston. Genuine people, lovely location and amazing views from the outside seating. The food is all amazing and comes out quickly. The staff are more than happy to help and gave me a custom deal :) the food was so good that I had to come each morning of my trip.

A nice little cafe with good veggie options. Despite its small size they managed to squeeze in eleven of us in a mixed age group, 2 to 74, and made us welcome. The food was good too. We ate a hearty brunch.
Grandad119 — Google review
A very warm welcome, every item on my breakfast was delicious. Latte was perfect. The toast portion was large and came with nice butter I think the bread may have been home baked. Thanks for getting me off to a good start.

Fantastic, we really liked this place. We had a drink each and a meal each, leek and potato soup with lashings of chunky bread and butter. Cheese and ham toastie (two huge chunks of granary bread)with a delicious fresh salad, coleslaw and crisps. All for less than £15 great value and tasted great. The two girls serving were really nice and welcoming and provided a great service. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend and we would definitely go back.

An absolutely amazing Full English Breakfast.... All quality produce and wedges of toasted fresh bread. Friendly service in a casual cafe environment. Highly recommended.

Such a lovely place to eat! The staff are so kind and friendly. We stopped to have soup on a cold day and it was perfect. The gave us the perfect amount of bread too. The cafe is cosy and has great views, which is a bonus.

Excellent stop for refreshments. Busy but friendly staff were very approachable and efficient. We had a cream tea and a hot cross bun both of which were very good with plenty of butter, cream and jam as required. Clientele were obviously both local and tourists so a good atmosphere.

Best Cafe We've Ever Been To... The cutest place. So glad we stumbled across this little cafe. We enjoyed it so much that we went back on the second day of our break aswel & we will certainly be returning every time we visit Coniston in the future. The staff are so kind and friendly, nothing too much trouble. They cater for everybodys needs & have a wide variety of options on the menu that you dont tend to get anywhere else. I was stuck for choice on what to choose it all looked so good. The food itself is local produce..so fresh and tasty, and the sour dough bread is out of this world. We would even go as far as saying its the best breakfast we've ever had. The cafe itself is a lovely little cozy shabby chic cafe with lovely decor and nice little finishing touches, which just made it for me. They also offer food & drink to take away & have a lovely outdoor seating area round the back to sit out, enjoy a cuppa, watch the world go by & enjoy the great british weather. We can't wait to visit again..Thanks so much :) x

What a great find in Coniston after a lakeside walk. Small cozy cafe full of locals & regulars, says a lot about it. Good menu with 5 soups to choose along with specials and the printed menu. Coffee was hot & strong, perfect for a winter's day. We had Matt's Special (chicken, bacon, cheese & BBQ sauce layered on top of thick toast) and toast with beans & egg, both were very tasty & filling. If it's busy, it's worth waiting for.

Lovely little spot in Coniston with divine views all around you. Really lovely staff, and even more wonderful customers - the card machine wasn’t working on my early boxing day visit, but the generous man behind me kindly paid ✨ Nice hot latte to keep me going on my Coniston Old Man adventures

A really lovely atmosphere here. The two girls working here were straight to the point but friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed a lovely pot of tea with my jacket potato and the jacket potato was cooked to perfection. Soft and fluffy with a crispy skin. Thoroughly enjoyable for a spontaneous quick bite to eat.
Luke — Google review
Quite disappointed I haven't stopped here sooner to be honest.. what a place! I'll be dropping in regularly moving forwards. The food is beautiful, followed up with a wicked service from the staff and great prices. The soup and toasty deal is above and the toasties are as big as your head packed with produce & flavour and a great serving of soup. Topped us up nicely for a autumn ride around the lakes 🤌💯
Kyle Henderson — Google review
Lovely little coffee shop which I stumbled across by accident walking into the village from the YHA. Both the staff were so friendly and the homemade soup was some of the best I've had. Big pots of tea and the cakes looked amazing (I forced myself to decline). Will definitely be back on my next visit
Emma — Google review
Had a nice meal here today, food was very nice. The staff were polite, the prices about average for what you would expect and they don't rip you off on the cost of drinks. Takeaway available. There is a second seating area at the back of the cafe. Only thing I would suggest is bake your jacket potatoes. Ones done in a microwave are a bit soggy and not as nice.
Jamie Titchener — Google review
Not too sure what I thought I’d get when I ordered a cheese and chicken wrap, but I’d have hoped for some sauce, maybe some salad in the wrap? But no, I got a sad little dry wrap with some chicken and cheese that wasn’t even melted. I paid £7 for this. Not sure why, I could’ve popped to the co-op across the street and recreated this culinary masterpiece for a fraction of the price. Won’t be coming here again. My friend ordered a fry up, that looked nice, so at least they have that going for them.

Indian restaurant
If you're not a fan of traditional British pub food in Lakeland, Saras Indian in Coniston is a fantastic alternative. This restaurant offers an extensive selection of authentic Indian dishes in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. You can indulge in various traditional recipes paired with non-alcoholic beverages. Although alcohol isn't served on-site, customers are more than welcome to bring their own drinks. Saras Indian provides all the classic Indian meals you would expect, with a friendly staff and delicious cuisine.
We had booked beforehand, but it wasn't full on the Friday night we went in here. Great food at a reasonable price. My friends had tandoori chicken livers for starters. Both like Indian restaurants and haven't seen this anywhere. They both said how nice it was but I'm not into livers. We all had different dishes and all enjoyed it. No card machine to pay though which could be an issue for some because you'd have to walk to a nearby cashpoint. I've been before and I'd go again.
Dave — Google review
Very tasty, great service. The curries all tasted different, not like some curry restaurants where the sauces can be quite similar. The chicken was cooked really beautifully, we particularly liked the one that came with orange. Fresh popadoms, delicious lime pickle and some fluffy warm nan bread. The food was really really nice and the staff were friendly and attentive too. We would come back for sure.

Lovely food and great friendly service. We were really impressed with the tasty Onion Bhaji's
Anthony Gagola — Google review
Went here whilst staying in the area for a weekend. Didn't book but were accomodated very well and seated quickly regardless. Reasonable prices and fantastic food. We went a second night on the trot in fact, as the local pubs weren't offering food. Despite it being last minute, they took our booking very short notice and we had another great meal here. Staff very friendly and welcoming, highly recommend. If I ever stay up there again, I will be sure to visit again!
Ollie Gregory — Google review
We had already tried a takeaway from Sara's two nights ago and it was so good we decided to eat in. Our dishes were a vegetable madras, a chicken bhuna, a chicken dupiaza and a chicken biryani. We also had a perfect garlic naan and rice. All in all our meals were excellent.
Azra Alvi — Google review
Some of the best food, of any kind, I've ever had, it is byob and cash only but as long as you know this in advance, the perfect place to eat any night of the week.
Bob Cassidy — Google review
Fitted in our party of 8 at short notice, really great tasting food and very friendly service. They do get busy with their take-away service as so popular, but quality and portion size V.good. Would recommend and we would like to visit again.
Jools — Google review
We have been using Sara’s Indian since it opened about 8/9 years ago. Every time the food is perfect and extremely tasty, very good value and the staff particularly Mia are very courteous, polite and efficient. I highly recommend if you are visiting Coniston to try one of their delicious meals. I can highly recommend the Chicken Chaat starter, it’s my favourite which is hard to say with all the delicious starters, onion bhajis another for example. There are lots of varied delicious mains to choose from too. The prices are very good and you take your own alcohol if you require alcohol or there are non alcohol drinks to purchase. We can’t wait till we visit again. Treat yourself to a taste sensation, you won’t be disappointed!
Alison McArthur — Google review
The service was good but food was not. We ordered biryanis and got pulav. It was not near biryani in any way. No flavours, no basmasti rice. As Indian I would not go there again. Aloo puri chat was actually just puri and aloo sabji. Chicken liver was only good thing. Would suggest to go to other places in coniston.
Puja — Google review
Very disappointing indeed, spent £45 on a collected takeaway, didn’t take too long. The starters were well below average and the 2 curry’s went in the bin, tasted awful, watery sauce and the meat just tasted weird (both the lamb & chicken). I would never order from here again even though these are supposed to be Bradford chef’s..
James Hardy — Google review
Very pathetic test and half cooked food. Tandoori roti was half cooked as told it was not even wheat based. Dal tadka with no tadka and in mixed veg all veggies half cooked. Tasteless. Even though this looks as Indian food. It’s no were to Indian richness. Below the standard preparation. Zero marks on food taste and quality and making. No one ate the food.
T Hote — Google review
Vindaloo was excellent, just a touch salty but good. Wife had Tandoori prawns, she said they were fantastic. Lots of sides that were also equally great. This was a take out & not a eat in. We were very pleased. Cash only. Not a licenced bar, but if u r eating in they allow u to bring ur own alcohol. Not soft drinks. Best to order over phone b4 picking up as we had a 45 min wait. Parking is also restrictive, Not many spaces & i believe 30 min max. Overall we enjoyed so well worth the visit. Would use again. Thanks.

I don't normally leave reviews but I feel I have to with Sara's Indian.. I was staying on Coniston for one night and thought I'd try it. All I can say is the food I had was exceptional as was the service... many times I find that Indian food is oily with an unpleasant aftertaste but my vegetable biryani and Dahl was superb ..highly recommended

This popular spot provides a menu featuring freshly baked cakes, light bites, and main courses, including options for vegetarians and vegans. Visitors can enjoy their food on a covered heated terrace while taking in the beautiful scenery.
Mars Bar slice that's a must! We were here for Coniston Powerboat Speed Records Week, so it was busy all the time. The staff were amazing, friendly and helpful all the time. Food really good. Lots of benches outside much appreciated. Toilets are lovely and very clean all week. A fabulous cafe in a very special place. Can't wait to go back, thank you all for looking after us all so well

What an amazing little cafe ! Very very friendly and helpful team. Dog friendly and amazing menu ! I was just having a Late and Walnut Cake but lots more to choose from. Great atmosphere and clean and tidy.

I went to eat lunch at The Bluebird Cafe today, after a very good walk around Coniston. I must say that I was very impressed with how clean the surfaces were and felt a lot relaxed with how safety is maintained very well. The food was very good, in particular the Tuna Toastie and the Latte was delicious! The staff were very friendly and hard-working, a huge credit to them and it made my first visit to the cafe very memorable. I hope to be back in the future, as couldn't have spoken highly enough about it!

We had a great holiday morning there. Rent a motor boat for 2 and a canoe for 2 persons. The others didn't want to do above water activities, just had a cup of coffee at The Bluebird cafe. The staffs are good, everyone gets in the water must wear life vests. They also gave us a safety instructions speech. It's a very good and carefully service before you get in water. We had lunch at the cafe after the water activities. The cafe had really nice view by the lake side. Nice weather to sit out side tables to have a cuppa tea.
Liliy Lin — Google review
Nice lake views, but since our last visit in May, it has gone a bit downhill. The scones were nice, but the sandwiches we had for lunch were rather plain and boring for the money, I had and egg and mayo sandwich, and it would do with a little upgrade - maybe add little bit of cress to it to make it look a bit more appealing...or some side salad, it was literally two slices of bread with egg mayo and few crisps on the side, just really not worth the price tag. Also, their toilets were rather bad! Only one unisex working toilet for the whole place and it was extremely dirty - we used the carpark toilets instead :/

Nice dog friendly cafe on edge of Coniston Lake. Paid £3 for 2 hrs parking nearby. Pleased with service and food. Walks from the cafe along edge of lake and further along concrete paths to Coniston.

A well located cafe to relax at water side and refuel. There is a good range of drinks and food on offer. The fruit smoothies are very good - we tried the berry and the tropical which were excellent thirst quenchers on a hot day. The coffee machine though needs a good service, or different beans, as the coffee really lacked depth.
SP W — Google review
Just had 3 fish and chips in this cafe (not all for me!) while waiting for yhe steam boat and it tasted fantastic. I've been to about 100 chippy places, including Cromer No 1, The Architect (Cambridge), The Bell of Studham and Aldeburgh, and this is probably the best one! The cod was hot, crispy and tasty, and the chips are hot and thin, soft on the inside but crisp on the outside. The service was very good (food came quickly and we didn't wait at all when asking for extra sauce). The toilet was immaculately clean, each cubicle has its own wash basin and drier. And the view was fantastic (looking at Coniston Water)

Kayaked down to Coniston from the other end of the lake for a late breakfast at the Bluebird Cafe. Covered outdoor area was ideal for slightly damp folk and both the service and food was top notch. The extra special hot chocolate is a must if you visit... Thanks so much, will definitely be back!
Si Taylor — Google review
Peaceful place, dog friendly, good selection of food and drinks, lovely milkshakes and really beautiful views of Coniston Water. Reasonable car parking, guess it gets really busy in summer, changing huts for swimmers / paddle-boarders and jetty to get onto lake cruise or enjoy the lake oneself in a powered boat. Don't take my word, just give it a visit.

Lovely place to sit and just arrive at Coniston Lake. Had tea and cake, which was lovely. Best bit is the car park which might be expensive, but you get free use of the toilets .. which is a benefit being in the Lakes.

We spent the morning swimming and sitting on the beach area. Lots of parking and easy accessibility . Good food choices and service. Everything tasted fresh and the smoothies were very refreshing. We are on holiday but would definitely return if in the area. Also very dog friendly and would recommend the ice creams for people and dogs !!

Popular spot, even among the locals. Great point for water sports. The cafe is very busy and Service is average. Tables outside are hard to come by, but worth an attempt. We had the fruit scone with clotted cream and jam, as well as the cheesy scone toasted with butter (excellent and crisp), both washed down with a flat white- everything Was great.
