(Translated by Google) Visited on August 9, 2023. I think it is a very good facility to get an overview of the history and culture of the region. The exhibition featured the Shinjo Festival, folk implements, paintings by local artist Zenjiro Chikaoka, works by Mineshi Okuyama, a blacksmith who is a living national treasure, and Jinjiro Matsuda, who looked up to Kenji Miyazawa as his mentor and worked hard to improve rural areas, as well as the purpose of this event. Adults can view the history and folklore materials exhibition room on the second floor for 300 yen. I think the exhibition is very important, as it was a station house located in this area that utilized the Mogami River's shipping during the Nara and Heian periods. It was also helpful to be able to check the rule of the Shimizu clan, Sakenobu clan, and Hosokawa clan in the Muromachi period before the arrival of the Tozawa clan of the Shinjo domain, and the movements of Yoshiaki Mogami in the Sengoku period. I think people tend to focus on the Tozawa clan's administration, but I felt that other areas were carefully researched and the exhibit was well put together. (Translated by Google) I visited for the first time in a while on August 9, 2023. Kyokomori, the founder of the Tozawa clan, moved to what is now Tozawa, Shizukuishi-cho, Iwate Prefecture (Tepishisho Tozawa Village) around the time of the Genpei War. He took part in the Battle of Oshu, was recognized by Minamoto no Yoritomo, and became the head of the land and a retainer. He took the name of his territory and became Tozawa Hiramori. From here, Mr. Tozawa arose. Under pressure from the Nanbu clan, he moved his base to Saimyoji Temple (Oyamada Castle?) in Nishikimura, Akita Prefecture, then moved to Kadoya in 1220, and built Kadoya Castle in 1228. According to ancient documents, it moved its headquarters to Kakunodate in 1423, 30th year of the Oei era. According to recent research, it is believed that it entered Kakunodate around 1468 during the Bunmei era. During the Battle of Sekigahara, he sided with the Tokugawa side and fought against the Uesugi army. Due to his military achievements, he was transferred to Matsuoka, Hitachi Province. In 1622, the Mogami clan expanded the territory and moved it to Shinjo. First, we entered Salmonnobu Castle, which remains in present-day Mamurogawa Town. In 1625, the first lord of Shinjo, Masamori Tozawa, built Shinjo Castle. In 1636, the castle tower was destroyed by fire. As it was, the castle tower was never rebuilt. During the Boshin War in 1868, the 4th year of the Keio era, the Shinjo domain, in line with the Akita domain, seceded from the Ou-etsu clan alliance and turned to the new government. As a result, the castle was invaded by the Shonai clan, and the castle town was reduced to ashes. It is said that Mr. Tozawa relied on Mr. Satake and fled to Akita. I remember walking in the moat here on the night of the Shinjo Festival when I was in high school. It's a nostalgic place.

(Translated by Google) This is the residence of the Tozawa clan, who became the lord of the Shinjo domain with 60,000 koku of land after the Mogami clan was transferred. The Tozawa clan was a Sengoku feudal lord based in Kakunodate, but due to various reasons, they became treated as a branch of the Torii clan, a prestigious family of the Tokugawa clan, and after the Mogami clan transferred, they became the lord of the Shinjo domain with a 60,000 koku lord. It fit in. During the Boshin War, Hideaki Kobayakawa was torn between the Ouuetsu clan alliance and the new government, and while the allied forces with the Shonai clan at their core were fighting hard to protect Shinjo, Hideaki Kobayakawa defected to the new government forces. He pulls off a shocking feat. As a result, Shinjo Castle was burnt down by the enraged soldiers of the Shonai clan, and the feudal lord, Masazane Tozawa, fled to the Kubota clan, which was on the side of the new government. Well, because of this, the castle has lost everything except the stone walls, so I don't get excited even when I visit it. Tozawa Shrine, which enshrines the founder of the Shinjo domain, is located at the site of the main enclosure. While Aizu, which had sacrificed itself for the cause, suffered from misfortune for a long time, Shinjo, a traitor, received preferential treatment from the new government. This is in contrast to the Kobayakawa clan, who died young and died without a successor, leading to the end of the imperial family, so if you are a person who values a high life of betrayal, you can expect some kind of divine blessings.

Being that this is the end / beginning of the Yamagata Shinkansen line, this train station tends to packed with people heading home during vacation time. It is best to plan ahead.
