Suwa Shrine

Sights & Landmarks
Historic Sites
Suwa Shrine, a 17th-century Shinto shrine located in Nagasaki, Japan, is known for its annual festivals and hilltop setting offering stunning cityscape views. Visitors come to pray for good health and long life at different stages of life, such as when reaching 33 or 40 years old. The shrine features statues of protective dogs and is famous for being three shrines joined together as one.
A nice hilltop shrine that offers a lovely view of the city, even at night! Multiple tori gates and a small climb lead to the main shrine where you can pray , get your fortune, and enjoy food and drinks if they are hosting a festival at the time.

Probably one of the most famous spots in Nagasaki. The shrine is huge and have to climb many stairs till the shrine, there are many activities that can be done there, a play ground for children, nursery, even a small zoo but it was closed by Night( obviously 🙄). At the midnight in the new year’s day, it gets very crowded by Nagasaki people praying for good luck in the coming year.
Amr Elrefaey — Google review
One of the largest and most signature Shrines in Nagasaki. Kunchi festival is held to dedicate to this very shrine.
Paul Bluebird — Google review
Pretty shrine with a koi pond and nice view of the mountains and city. There are a few steps up to the top but easily manageable.
Becky — Google review
Unless you are a religious person, there is nothing much to see or do here. On November 25, 2018, I bought a 1-day tram pass and tried to see tourist spots near tram stations. I did not see much and did not lose much either!
Peter Kam Fai Cheung — Google review
This shrine has both epic Nagasaki view and magnificent architecture on the shrine itself.
Wei Min Chong — Google review
A nice and large shrine Pretty cool and they have a nice small park nearby The stairs are great to go upstairs and downstairs Toilets available Atmosphere is good and I liked it. Place to sit and benches
Hi Wa — Google review
Beautiful shrine with a tranquil feeling. There are information posts for each shrine which we used google camera translate to decifer the texts. Very interesting history. There is a free animal park nearby ad well.
Melvin Jia Herng Tan — Google review
Amazing shrine full of history. We had to climb 200+ steps to reach it, but it was well worth the effort as we could also see Nagasaki from the top. Even though we went on a rainy day, it was really beautiful.
Maria — Google review
Magnificent! Going through those torii gates, climbing up the stairs and finally reaching the Suwa Shrine to offer prayers, the whole journey was very captivating. It took me about 25 minutes to reach here from Nagasaki station, for your information just in case you prefer to be on your feet than taking the tram just like me. Enjoy the tranquility.
Pei — Google review
Drop off at Suwa Jinja Shrine station and it's 2 minutes walk. The shrine is breath taking and massive in size. Not far away is Nagasaki cultural and art museum.
Sethabutra Viraseranee — Google review
Beautiful shrine with a lot of stairs. When you go in summer it’s very exhausting to go up the stairs, but luckily they had a ventilated resting area. The shrine was clean and well managed. They also have guide brochures in English that talks about the history of the shrine.
Wai Man Cheong — Google review
This was a beautiful night walk that I decided to take to Suwa Shrine and I couldn't have been more proud of my decision. The walk up the Shrine through the many torii gates is lighted up and it is amazing all the way. I was even lucky enough to witness a blood moon from. Definitely recommend going there at night!

Megane Bridge

Mentioned on
Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
Historical landmark
Megane Bridge, also known as Spectacles Bridge, is a historic pedestrian walkway that crosses the Nakashima River in Nagasaki. Built in 1634 by Chinese monks, it holds the distinction of being Japan's oldest stone arch bridge. The bridge's unique design features round arches that create a reflection resembling a pair of spectacles in the water below.
Built in 1634, this is the oldest stone-arch bridge in Japan. Its name means '"spectacles" or "glasses" in Japanese , and got its name from the reflection of its two arches on the river. Quite beautiful in design on its own, but the river and the nearby bridges are lovely. Well worth a visit.
Nathan f — Google review
It is a very pretty bridge. I was in a hurry so did not have time to get the correct angles to make it look like spectacles. But even so it was pretty. I saw a lot of people around here enjoying the weather.
RnV Marty — Google review
As its name, Meganebashi means Spectacles bridge. On a good day you will see the reflection of the bridge make it looks like spectacles. Nothing much else.. you can stroll along the river and find the heart shape stone for a good luck too. 10-15 min is enough for this place.
Sivaporn S — Google review
What a great tourist spot, got there on dusk and watched the light change. 400 year old bridge that is easily accessible and not crowded. Even found the iconic heart stone
Andrew Licence — Google review
Not very crowded. Good to see fish and turtles there.
Wanniwat Naruenatwanit — Google review
The whole area is very pretty with these bridges all built with lava stones. Some statues are along the way and many temples in correspondence of various bridges. Herons and carpa complete the scene
Donatella Polizzi — Google review
Near to Chinatown. Although spectacles bridge is the most famous, the whole stretch of 6 to 7 bridges are all old and memorable. Look for the heart shape rock. We visited in Jan and town lanterns were ready for Chinese New Year. Watch the fat carps swim over the ‘divider’ too.
Andy Lee — Google review
I wasn’t sure if I was going to make a point to see a bridge, but it was actually super cool. During the latern festival the walkway on either side was decorated with beautiful lanterns. Very happy we decided to take a look!
Courtney Halverson (courtneya99) — Google review
Beautiful location for photos and a moment’s relaxation while exploring Nagasaki.
Gareth Morris — Google review
The water had small ripples so their were no great reflection photo ops like the postcards but still worth a visit if you're nearby.
Greg Reinhart — Google review
a nice area to hang out in good weather. many cafes around and benches. you can also go down to the water and feed the koi.
EN — Google review
nice spectacles bridge. Head to the coffee place nearby (see my other review) within 3 min walk. Use Google magic eraser to blank out other people in your photo
Joshua Ng — Google review
Unique photo opportunity. Beautiful surroundings. There are pockets of payable parking lots around the area for those driving.
M lee — Google review
Read up on the history and visit off peak hours to enjoy a more serene experience. Parking easily available, charges vary, but nearer to the bridge costs more.
An Koh — Google review
Cute thing that I have seen numerous times on my computer. There is an old shopping street nearby that I recommend for its nostalgic qualities. Chinatown and more modern shopping arcades are nearby.
Anthony Lorbach — Google review
The oldest bridge in Nagasaki that is still in use. It is near a street car stop. Worth a few minutes and a few photos of your time. It is also near the 2nd oldest bridge in the city.
Guy Breshears — Google review
Pleasant stop to have a look along the river and hear about the history of the area. There are a lot of shrines on the side away from the trams and buses but they are not visible from the bridge.

The Aso Shrine, a Shinto shrine with a history of 2,000 years, hosts several festivals and rituals. The shrine has been restored to its former glory following a powerful earthquake that struck the area five years ago. The shrine was visited in June 2015 before the earthquake occurred.

The reason I gave 3 stars is because most of the places are under renovation, which we are unable to view . Through pictures, we can envision that it will be a fantastic nice shrine . Hope to come again when it is ready .
Choo HengHeng — Google review
The shrine is a beautiful place, although it’s partly under construction. Went there around 10 am on a weekend and there weren’t people visiting yet. The entrance is free but if you come by car, after exceeding some time you need to pay 100¥.

Beautiful authentic Japanese shrines! Amazing for seeing old Japanese craftsmanship.
harrybrecher — Google review
Aso Jinja is quite old and magnificent. It's arround 12 min from miyaji station. We had booked stay near the Jinja. It's in Kyushu, Japan. There are many beautiful places in Kyushu, recommend to stay for 2 to 3 days to cover those places. There isn't much railway connectivity for those places.
poornima h s — Google review
Great place to visit. The temple staff are friendly and will take the time to answer any questions you might have. Seeing the rebuild that they've done is fascinating as well.
Georgia Bennett — Google review
The main shrine was destroyed by the recent earthquake and they are in the process of rebuilding it. Another interesting thing about this area, there are many spring and fountains that you can hunt them down individually. These springs are also located in the shopping district and there are many nice cafe and restaurants you can try. You can go to the visitor centre for more information.
Dan Ho — Google review
A mix of mostly new and some old as the majority of the complex was destroyed in the earthquake. Goushuine only available by the piece of paper - stupid COVID.
Josh Diddams — Google review
Shrine at Mount Aso. Building is still under reconstruction (dec-2022). The shrine hall is very big and grand.
Kam Hoe Chaw (Super Good) — Google review
Very little foreigners come here after the destroy of the main shrine my the earthquake. The damaged parts has been removed and it is now under reconstruction. The shopping street is very quiet and no much tourists even the shops are opened. * God bless Aso 🙏🏾
Alvin Liu — Google review
A very special outing. Love for cyclists is felt here! Pay your respects and ride safe.
Joseph Whitt — Google review
Actually, this is more of a construction site as we visited this place in May 2021. The original building collapsed and is covered by a big steel construction on which the shrine is printed on. Would only recommend to visit after the construction is done. Then it might be a site worth visiting. Parking is close to the site.
Ralf Blaich — Google review
The place is beautifully restored 5 years after the strong earthquake.
Ish J — Google review
A large shrine complex with a lot of history. Sadly it suffered a lot of damage in the earthquake of 2016. A lot of construction is still going on and will be for some time. It is worth visiting whilst in the area to see the reconstruction, there are large boards around the site showing the process/progress.

At Ashikita Seaside General Park, visitors can enjoy a variety of thrilling activities such as roller luge, zorbing and skateboarding. In addition to these exciting attractions, the park also features a children's playground for younger guests to enjoy. For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, there is even a small beach and food spot nearby. The roller luge course offers three different levels of difficulty - beginner, intermediate and advanced - making it suitable for all skill levels.
Great little spot to visit with a down hill luge, zorbing and other kid friendly attractions. Also right next to a small beach and food spot. The luge was my son's favourite despite having to ride with me due to being too short to go on his own. Although a single or triple ticket seems good enough value of your sub was like mine, you might as well but a day pass as you will send up going down lots of times anyway

Roller luging rocks! In American this would be illegal! The courses are great! Three courses: beginning, intermediate, and advanced. And all fast! It's best to have friends to race against. Oh yeah, feel the speed!

(Translated by Google) Roller luge is super fun. Both adults and children can enjoy it. It was worth visiting from afar. There were table seats in the air-conditioned rest area, so it was comfortable even with small children. Small children can also ride with adults, so they won't get bored, and the parking lot is conveniently located next door. If I had to force it, I would like the prices to be lowered a little. A one-day ticket is expensive at 3000 yen. The parking fee ticket is a one-time free ticket, but if you buy a one-day ticket, it's meaningless, so I'd like to see a discount or a set fee for some people. It was affected by the weather and I was unable to drive twice due to rain, so I wish there were some discounts available.

(Translated by Google) I visited there the other day after learning that Tomihiro Hoshino had passed away. I knew there was an art museum in Gunma Prefecture, but I never thought there was one in Kumamoto Prefecture as well. The pictures are wonderful, but the poems have an indescribable gentleness to them. I was impressed once again. (Translated by Google) I like Tomihiro Hoshino's paintings, so I stopped by while driving to Kumamoto. The white walls are impressive in a quiet village. Although it is a small museum, the exhibits change regularly. The first aim is Souvenir. One of the main purposes is to purchase duplicates such as postcards. It's always quiet, so it's good for viewing, but is it profitable? I'm worried if I can maintain it. With gentle pictures and gentle fonts, works filled with gratitude, thought, and love are on display. Even locals don't know much about the museum's existence, but I want more people to see it! I felt that. You can be grateful for your parents, grateful for your ordinary daily life, and grateful for the things you take for granted. (I went with my daughter, but I wonder how she felt...) As for the works, a video of Mr. Hoshino was played before the reception. I would like you to see this too.
