Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, located in Fukuoka, Japan, is a popular Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of learning, Sugawara Michizane. The shrine boasts a museum and beautiful gardens filled with 6,000 plum trees that bloom from late January to early March.
Amazing place to see! Definitely recommend. After you explore the main garden and shrine, adventure behind it in the trees. You may even just stumble upon another shrine like we did! There are plenty of food and souvenir shops in the area as well. Definitely a fun outing ❤️
Faith Minter — Google review
Lots of lovely shops along the way to the temple but the temple itself was undergoing works and so you do the praying in front of a scaffolding with an image of the temple. If you walk round the back you could catch glimpses of the priest citing prayers if lucky. We went on a weekday and it was fairly busy with lots of tourist buses parked in the car park. Gardens are beautiful. Please don’t walk in the middle through the gates unless you’re a deity.
Michael Ong — Google review
There are many shops on the way to the temple where we can buy snacks, sweets or different kinds of souvenirs. We bought some puzzles to kill our free time. A nice experience to enjoy Japanese culture. Definitely a good place to visit in Fukuoka.
Alex Nguyen — Google review
One of the best Shrines I have visited in Japan. Admission is Free. Very spacious and interesting place. It was a little crowded for a weekday but there was still plenty of room to walk and take pictures. Plenty of cheap paid parking lots within 4 minutes walking distance. 3 hours with cost ¥400. Definitely highly recommended and you will enjoy yourself. Rub the bull and get ready for a nice hike around the grounds.
Jay Johnson — Google review
It’s a very beautiful shrine complex, and definitely the most famous and grand in Fukuoka prefecture. The surrounding town is quite charming, and the food stands around the shrine are excellent and a perfect place to get some Japanese street food.
Jacob Newcomb — Google review
Definitely worth a visit if you have the time. Taking the train from Fukuoka to Dazaifu Station cost 410 yen, taking about 30 minutes. Since the shrine is nearby, plan about half a day here. I was amazed by the giant trees at this shrine. The facility and area is very well maintained. Unfortunately you can't go inside the building. The shrine is filled without tourist traps too.
Rabbit Wooden — Google review
It's not just a shrine. While walking on your way to the shrine, there's a lot of souvenir stores and snacks sold on the street. It's a famous tourist attraction too! The shrine itself if really huge and you can hike further to the Inari shrine. You can also walk to the National Park (but it's really far) A place worth the visit!
Ann Ri — Google review
Dazaifu Tenmangu and surrounding area are a must see! The walkway leading to the shrine is five minutes walk from Dazaifu station. The many shops and cafes leading to the shrine offer delicious sweets like the famous grilled mochi filled with azuki- sweet red bean paste- super delicious! There are lots of cute souvenirs to buy! It’s hard to choose! The shrine area is beautiful with several ponds including an iris pond that is home to many turtles. The shrine grounds have several places where you can purchase malas, amulets and your fortune! There are quiet places tucked here and there where you can sit and meditate or just enjoy the beauty of the grounds.

A beautiful Shinto shrine with interesting architecture and a large garden. Very popular destination with many visitors but still a must-see.
Jumi — Google review
Nice place to visit. Nice scenery with a very unique temple roof. The place is huge with lots of greenery. There’s a giant tree there under protected species.
kim kuan — Google review
The shrine that every tourists will visit if they are in Fukuoka. Quite crowded at 10am as the tour groups are just arriving. The crowded part is at the Main Street and the shrine. After giving your prayers, continue exploring behind the shrine and you will chance upon the more serene part of Dazaifu. Another hidden shrine at the back where you have to walk through many tori gates to reach. And a restaurant that sells good udon too. Just explore and don’t just leave after looking at the main shrine.
Seah Jia Hui — Google review
A nice place! Slightly more crowded than other famous shrines in Fukuoka area. I found the most special point to be the main building, which has plants growing on the roof instead of traditional roof tiling. It’s a really unique point I haven’t seen anywhere else! Gives a very refreshing vibe~ Pictures can’t really capture its beauty!
Rennie Lee — Google review
Great place for scholars. The myth associated with the place is more interesting. Can you spot the flying plum tree? The Kyushu national museum in the vicinity covers pieces from all over the world. Entrance is free for students. Great place to pass your time for a day near Fukuoka.
Anjan Sapkota — Google review
One of the most beloved day trip place near from Fukuoka city. Usually take half an hour by car, and within an hour by public transportation like bus or subway from downtown. Genuine upscale Japanese temple, and always full with domestic and foreign visitors. Value for visit to experience their own unique cultures.
Spaceman Young — Google review
It was a beautiful temple and the grounds were well-kept. A lot of blooming flowers when we went as well (June 13). Just be prepared for a lot of people even if you come at around 10-11am.
Audric Sy — Google review
It's definitely a tourist trap location. We we got here, there were a lot of tourists! The weather was hot! Bring plenty of water. The shrine and the landscape were cute.

One of my favorite places in all of Japan. Every visit is interesting and beautiful. On the walk to the shrine there are a number of gift shops and wonderful places to grab a snack.

One of the iconic places to visit when you are in Fukuoka . Always crowded but fun . Interesting rows of sweet shops and eateries leading towards Dazaifu makes your visit more enjoyable .
Choo HengHeng — Google review
One of the least interesting place I visited in Japan. The place is full of tourists. The food around is digusting and high priced. There is nothing particularly beautiful around and the place is pretty small. Nevertheless, a nice little Shinto shrine is hidden in the forest behind.
Q (白挪) — Google review
There were a lot of visitors because it was the start of the holiday weekend. The ice cream was delicious but there was a long wait time. Expect long wait times for a lot of the popular food stalls! But it was worth the wait!
sue wu — Google review
I have really come to appreciate Shinto shrines during my visit to Japan. The peace here is wonderful. The sights are great and seeing a constant stream of people coming here to worship is heartening. I was impressed by everything here and wish i could stay much longer.

Really enjoyed my visit here, but so be prepared for the crowds on a weekend. Some of the vendors had long lines and the streets have many tourists. Plenty of souvenir shops around also if you're looking for a gift! There are some trails that surround the shrine also which were nice to venture down. Worth the visit!
Vinny F — Google review
Very nice photo opportunities here, good mix of temple and nature. It gets quite busy as this is a popular tourist destination.
Derek Woo — Google review
Understand that this beautiful shrine is dedicated to learning, culture and arts. And we were fortunate enough to witness a ceremony involving young aspiring kids and their parents keen to embark on their learning journeys. Beautiful park with the colours of autumn. Lots of shops lining the way to the shrine overwhelmed by tourists.

I visit on weekdays. it's not too crowded, which is perfect for a relaxing. It's about a 40-minute journey from Hakata Station. Worth it for the tranquility and delicious food. I like strawberry daifuku soo much🍓

Took the train over as the bus queue at Hakata station is way too long. Nice place to visit, can spend a good 1-2 hrs in the area visiting shops and Dazaifu. Went on 20 Feb and there were some cherry blossom blooming already!!

The reason I gave 3 stars is because most of the places are under renovation, which we are unable to view . Through pictures, we can envision that it will be a fantastic nice shrine . Hope to come again when it is ready .

The shrine is a beautiful place, although it’s partly under construction. Went there around 10 am on a weekend and there weren’t people visiting yet. The entrance is free but if you come by car, after exceeding some time you need to pay 100¥.

Aso Jinja is quite old and magnificent. It's arround 12 min from miyaji station. We had booked stay near the Jinja. It's in Kyushu, Japan. There are many beautiful places in Kyushu, recommend to stay for 2 to 3 days to cover those places. There isn't much railway connectivity for those places.

Great place to visit. The temple staff are friendly and will take the time to answer any questions you might have. Seeing the rebuild that they've done is fascinating as well.
Georgia Bennett — Google review
The main shrine was destroyed by the recent earthquake and they are in the process of rebuilding it. Another interesting thing about this area, there are many spring and fountains that you can hunt them down individually. These springs are also located in the shopping district and there are many nice cafe and restaurants you can try. You can go to the visitor centre for more information.

A mix of mostly new and some old as the majority of the complex was destroyed in the earthquake. Goushuine only available by the piece of paper - stupid COVID.

Shrine at Mount Aso. Building is still under reconstruction (dec-2022). The shrine hall is very big and grand.

Very little foreigners come here after the destroy of the main shrine my the earthquake. The damaged parts has been removed and it is now under reconstruction. The shopping street is very quiet and no much tourists even the shops are opened. * God bless Aso 🙏🏾

A very special outing. Love for cyclists is felt here! Pay your respects and ride safe.
Joseph Whitt — Google review
Actually, this is more of a construction site as we visited this place in May 2021. The original building collapsed and is covered by a big steel construction on which the shrine is printed on. Would only recommend to visit after the construction is done. Then it might be a site worth visiting. Parking is close to the site.
Ralf Blaich — Google review
The place is beautifully restored 5 years after the strong earthquake.
Ish J — Google review
A large shrine complex with a lot of history. Sadly it suffered a lot of damage in the earthquake of 2016. A lot of construction is still going on and will be for some time. It is worth visiting whilst in the area to see the reconstruction, there are large boards around the site showing the process/progress.

Nationally recognized as a historic location, Hitoyoshi Castle is a 12th-century fortress in ruins that has undergone restoration of its stone wall. The castle also features informational boards and a museum dedicated to its rich history.
Though the castle itself was destroyed in the early Meiji era, we were so impressed with its great stone wall, which was great enough for us to imagine the old age.

(Translated by Google) Since the stone walls are being repaired, you cannot enter the castle ruins from the tourist parking lot, so I parked my car in the park at the back and headed to the castle tower ruins. Construction is expected to be completed in February 2020, so if you plan to travel, we recommend planning your trip after that date. The castle seems to be Hirayama Castle, and it feels like a castle on a small mountain. The stone wall here has a small eave-like structure attached to the top of the stone wall, and is called Musha Gaeshi. It's a fairly unusual structure, so let's take a closer look at it. The way the stone walls are laid is thought to be ``field-style wood'', but most of the stones used are tuff, so the stones are quite beautiful and have the feel of a carved hagi. The tuff is only found in this area, or rather, it is a tuff that does not originate from Mt. Aso.
