Hindu temple
The Vishnupad Temple, located in Gaya, Bihar, India, is a significant Hindu sanctuary dating back to the 1700s. It is revered for housing a footprint believed to have been made by Lord Vishnu. This temple holds great importance in Hindu mythology and serves as the final destination for the ritual of Shraddha and Pind Daan.
This temple is located along the Falgu River, marked by a footprint of Lord Vishnu known as Dharmasila, incised into a block of basalt. Legends have it, Once a demon known as Gayasura, did a heavy penance and sought a boon that whoever see him should attain salvation (Moksham). Since salvation is achieved through being righteous in one's lifetime, people started obtaining it easily. To prevent immoral people from attaining salvation Lord Vishnu asked Gayasura to go beneath the earth and did so by placing his right foot on asura's head. After pushing Gayasura below the surface of earth, Lord Vishnu's foot print remained on the surface that we see even today. Gayasura now pushed into earth pleaded for food. Lord Vishnu gave him a boon that every day, someone will offer him food. Whoever does so, their souls will reach heaven. The day Gayasura doesn't get food, it is believed that he will come out. Every day, one or the other from different parts of India will pray for welfare of his departed and offer food, feeding Gayasura.

Vishnupad Temple Photo Credit: Flickr India | Bihar | Bodhgaya #12 of 19 Places to Visit in Bodhgaya Distance (From Bodhgaya): 10 Kms Trip Duration (Including Travel): 1 Hour Place Location: In Gaya Transportation Options: Bus / Cab Travel Tips: None At a distance of 4 km from Gaya Junction Railway Station, and 10 km from Bodhgaya Bus Station, Vishnupad Mandir is a Hindu temple located in the city of Gaya, Bihar. It is one of the ancient sacred temples in Gaya and among the well-known places to visit as part of the Bodhgaya Tour Packages. Situated on the banks of Falgu River, Vishnupad Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. According to the historical records, the existence of the Vishnupad temple goes back to the period of Samudragupta, who ruled over a vast empire during the 5th Century CE. The inscriptional source for this evidence is based on the Basarh Seal discovered in Vaishali. Further evidence is found in the Mehrauli Pillar inscription of King Chandragupta II. The inscription mentions this King as a devotee of Lord Vishnu and records the installation of 'dhvaja' or pillar of Vishnu on the Vishnupad Hill. A 9th-century inscription commemorates the dedication of a house for ascetics at Vishnupad by the Pala king Narayanapala. A record dated 1058 CE mentions that Vishvarupa, the ruler of Gaya built the Gadadhara temple, which forms part of the Vishnupad temple complex. Though the origin of the temple is unknown, the present octagonal structure was built by Rani Ahilya Bai Holkar, the queen of Indore, in 1787. The Vishnupad temple is said to be the exact site where Lord Vishnu had pressed his feet on Gayasura's body, leaving the imprint of his feet on the rocky surface. According to the legend, a demon named Gayasura attained the boon after a heavy penance. According to the boon, anyone who looked at him can attain salvation. Due to this indiscriminate action, the concept of Karma and its effect was becoming redundant. To prevent this, Lord Vishnu pushed Gayasura below the surface of the earth by placing his foot on his chest. Gayasur adjured him for food, Vishnu then said that he will not die of hunger and whoever will offer him food will get salvation. Hence, this is the reason why people go there to do 'Pind-Daan' of their loved ones. It is believed that the day Gayasur doesn't get his food will be the day of his return to the world. The imprint of Lord's foot, measuring 40 cm in length, is visible in the temple and pilgrims worship it daily. The temple's architecture is influenced by the Shikara style. The core part of the temple consists of the main shrine with a tall Vimana, 100 feet high, and a pillared Mandapa. The Shrine faces east and the interior is octagonal in shape. As the name suggests that the temple houses about 40 cm long footprint of Lord Vishnu known as Dharmasila that is enclosed by a basin made of silver plates. This footprint also has various symbols that are associated with the attributes such as conch, disc, and mace of Lord Vishnu. Also, the temple houses shrines of deities like Lord Narasimha and Lord Shiva. A special fair takes place on the premises of the temple in the month of Pitripaksha. Pitripaksha is a time when Hindus pay respects to their ancestors, especially with food offerings. During Pitripaksha, a Pind Daan by family members of the dead soul is fruitful. The Vishnupad Temple in Gaya holds a special place in Hindu mythology and serves as the final destination for the ritual of Shraddha and Pind Daan. Situated on the banks of the sacred Falgu River, this temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is believed to house his footprint, known as Vishnupada. The temple's architecture is a blend of ancient and contemporary styles, featuring intricate carvings and ornate sculptures that depict various scenes from Hindu mythology. As visitors approach the temple, they are greeted by the soothing sound of the flowing river and the aroma of incense, creating a serene and reverential atmosphere. Inside the temple, devotees offer prayers and perform rituals to honor their ancestors as part of the Shraddha and Pind Daan ceremonies. The significance of this ritual lies in the belief that by performing these rites at the Vishnupad Temple, one can liberate their ancestors' souls from the cycle of birth and death. The surrounding area is dotted with numerous smaller shrines and bathing ghats, adding to the spiritual ambiance of the place. Pilgrims from all over India flock to the Vishnupad Temple to fulfill their ancestral duties and seek blessings for themselves and their loved ones. In conclusion, the Vishnupad Temple in Gaya is not only a sacred pilgrimage site but also a place where devotees can connect with their roots, honor their ancestors, and seek divine blessings. It stands as a symbol of faith, devotion, and the eternal cycle of life and death in Hindu belief.

Stay away from this temple during festival days, if you care for your life and self-respect. In the lanes leading to the temple complex, some people are regulating the crowd to go in a single line. Once you are inside the temple, there is chaos, mayhem and pandemonium. Inside the temple hall where there is supposed to be footprint, there is no crowd control. With all the pushing and crushing, if one manages to go near the pit where the foot print is located, there will be disappointment; With all the flowers, garlands and other pooja items thrown into the pit, one cannot see even a stone surface let alone footprint. Added to that, near the pit, there is heavy pushing and crushing besides the man-handling attitude of the so-called crowd regulators. With all the above, one comes to the conclusion that life will be better off upon exit from the temple. That is not to be. At the exit, the crowd has to exit through a narrow door. Here people are pushed and crushed even more. I started wondering whether I will be able to exit alive in one piece. There is nothing much to see in this temple except the foot print; You would be better off thinking about your parent's feet at home. Almost all the devotees had the most harrowing, painful and saddest visit to a temple. Why can't the administration arrange barricades to ensure orderly one-person-after-another movement of the crowd within the temple hall? If the footprint is the only thing to see in the temple, why should the people be allowed to throw flowers and pooja items into the pit?

Pros: Temple has its own spiritual vibes undoubtedly. Cons: BEWARE OF FRAUDSTERS. Not everybody is a fraud though, yet some are there ready to trick you. To mention one, there is a small shop just opposite the temple on the road that sells pooja related items in a hand woven basket (you have to return him the basket afterwards). He portrays himself very amicable and helpful, offers to take care of your shoes also. Make sure to check all the items that you brought back as prasad. He offers to pack them for you when you return him the basket and very cleverly keeps some of the packed items aside, away from your site to sell them again to other customers.

Sita Devi performed the pind-daan offering to King Dasharatha at Sita Kund in Gaya. It is one of the most significant holy sites in Gaya and is situated on the eastern bank of the Falgu river in the Indian state of Bihar. Lord Rama and Lakshmana had also planted their lotus feet here, in addition to Sita Devi. Although there are Sita Kunds in other places, such as the one in Munger, Bihar, the Sita Kund in Gaya has a unique personality all its own. Here, beneath the sand on the banks of the Falgu river, the Gupt Ganga river runs. The Gupt Gangaโ€™s holy waters can be viewed by making a small hole in the sand with your bare hands. The statue of Sita Devi and King Dasharathaโ€™s hand accepting a pinda can be found in the Sita Kunda historical shrine. King Dasharatha is holding one pinda while keeping the other two pindas by the side. As you enter the main gate from the ghat on the Falgu river bank, the temple is to your left.

Sita Kund(Ramgaya ) holy site for Hindus. It is just located east of vishnupad temple and back of falgu river. In sita kund also notice a Ancient nagara temple. This temple is built in Triratha/Nagar style. This Temple Belong to post Gupta period (เค‰เคคเฅเคคเคฐเค—เฅเคชเฅเคคเค•เคพเคฒเฅ€เคจ ) and time to Rebuilt it but sadly This Temple now on the verge of extinction. The inscription of Mahendra Pal was found here, in architecture very similar to the Mahabodhi temple(Bodhgaya Bihar), now only the remains of the Trirath style post-Gupta temple are left. This temple is situated on the Ramgaya hill (Now Nagkut)of Gaya on the eastern side of Falgu river in front of Vishnupad temple. The plan, top, tower, door frame prove its antiquity. The architecture of the temple looks similar to the Mahabodhi temple. The carvings are also visible on the upper part of the pillars of the portico. Based on this plan and record of temple construction, this temple is of ninth century(1100 Year Old). According to Cunningham there a also Plate of Dasavatara. Few Century ago this Temple worship ago As shiva Temple.

Vandana Sweets is a great place for young individuals and families of four looking for a variety of sweets. The establishment could benefit from having seats to accommodate the entire family, as well as noise-cancelling windows to create an enjoyable dining experience. The food served is delicious, and while customer care is average, some decorations and a TV for entertainment would enhance the atmosphere. Vandana Sweets offers a range of South Indian delicacies along with other tasty treats at moderate prices.

This sweet shop is not good for purchase of sweets because they use dirty water for sweets preparation. The tap present at this shop gives blackish dirty water which is very harmful for health.

One of the best destinations in Gaya if you're looking for a Satvik vegetarian meal. They serve the simple thaali with chapati or rice. The sabjis( and sides) can be chosen between a few kinds of sabjis available for the day. Their specialities include Aalu Potol Karela sabji Daal taDka And yes, the Laddu is fresh and worth trying
