The Temple of King Ashoka, a Buddhist vihara situated in Yinzhou District of Ningbo, China, is a massive complex that was occupied by ancient dynasties. The temple boasts an area of over 124,100-square-metre (1,336,000 sq ft), including vihara lands and forests. Its building area alone is 23,400-square-metre (252,000 sq ft).
Great experience to feel chinese buddhism culture! When I arrived there, I was surprised at the size of the place! This King Ashoka Temple is huge, so I walked for about an hour to watch every buildings. I when there in early morning in May. So it was refreshing mood and there was few people, which made my walking good experience.

This is one of the must see temples around Ningbo. The complex is beautifully restored. It is very easily accessible either with a taxi or a bike. Try not to come on the weekend as it gets very busy. There are several beautiful shrines and a reservoir on the hill just behind the temple. Most visitors just stay in the temple complex proper. There is a small door at the back of the temple that leads into the forest. The path is a bit steep at first, but once you get on top of the hill it is relatively flat. This is a start of a hiking trail and if you feel fit (or feel like mountain biking), you will see some really incredible places.

One of the largest temples of this town. During spring time you can see a lot of bamboo seller across the streets. There are also turtle sellers. I don’t recommend buying the turtles unless for food, because they are actually a Brazilian invasive breed. They also sell fish food so you can feed the koi fish here. I find this place friendly, but my friend says he dislikes it here because the monks here seem to be constantly pushing them to buy accessories/candles.

Tianjin Square is a large open air shopping district. Very modern, clean and new. You can find many famous fashion labels here. The area feels very premium and as one would expect the restaurants are somewhat on the expensive side. If you're looking for a slice of historical Ningbo, this may not be the place for you. However it's a great place to walk around and appreciate the city lights at night.

The Baoguo Temple, a serene Buddhist temple nestled atop a hill and accessible by public bus an hour outside the city, is renowned for its well-preserved wooden main hall dating back to 1013. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery without worrying about crowds. While the hike up to the temple from the bottom may be challenging, it is worth it to witness this architectural marvel built in 1103 AD entirely without nails (though some have since been added for preservation purposes).
The entrance to the temple is right next to the bus terminal (line 332 to Nijiayuan Station). It's not as big or crowded as Tiantong Temple, but a bit more interesting from an architectural point of view. The Song-era wooden main hall is a must see, and there are many exhibits on traditional Chinese architecture (mostly in Chinese). Various pavilion-topped hills surrounding the temple complex can also be hiked.

(Translated by Google) Although it did not reach the country, it still saved itself. It is definitely the appearance of Buddha. It is the best-preserved wooden structure of the Northern Song Dynasty south of the Yangtze River for a full 1010 years. No one has this kind of luck. One in a million, especially the fate of the upright Baosheng Temple, is in heaven and earth. There are only a handful of existing buildings south of the Yangtze River whose main beam structure is from the Northern Song Dynasty. In addition to the main hall of Baoguo Temple, there are only the main hall of Mei'an in Zhaoqing, Guangdong, the main hall of Hualin Temple in Fuzhou, and the Sanqing Hall of Yuanmiao Temple in Putian, Fujian. The expanded waist eaves in the Qing Dynasty look disgusting, but they also have advantages. One is that it is equivalent to adding a waterproof cover to block wind and rain, and the outer brackets are protected. Secondly, the walls of the original hall were demolished with the coat, so that the complete wooden structure could be seen through, which is unique in the country. (Translated by Google) Baoguo Temple is located at the foot of Lingshan Mountain in Hongtang Town, Jiangbei District, Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, 15 kilometers away from the urban area. It was built during the reign of Emperor Shizu of the Eastern Han Dynasty and was originally named Lingshan Temple. This is the predecessor of Baoguo Temple. The temple was destroyed in the fifth year of Huichang in the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt in the first year of Guangming (880). Emperor Xizong Li Xuan gave it a plaque with the name "Baoguo Temple", and it was later renamed Baoguo Temple. Baoguo Temple is not world-famous for its religious temples, but for its stunning architectural craftsmanship. The Main Hall (also known as the Wuliang Hall) in the temple is one of the oldest and best-preserved wooden structures south of the Yangtze River. It contains the Main Hall, the Heavenly King's Hall, the Sutra Building of the Tang Dynasty, the Guanyin Hall, and the Pure Land Pond. The ancient building complex of Baoguo Temple covers an area of 13,280 square meters, with a construction area of 7,000 square meters and 28 hectares of natural forest outside the temple. In March 1961, it was announced by the State Council as one of the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units. [1] In 2013, it was rated as a national AAAA tourist attraction. During the reign of Emperor Shizu of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the son of the hussar general Zhang Yi lived in seclusion in Lingshan, and his later residence was used as a temple. According to "Temple Chronicles", during the reign of Emperor Shizu of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Zhongshu Lang Zhang Qifang, the son of General Zhang Yi, lived in seclusion in Lingshan. His rear residence became a temple, which was first named Lingshan Temple. This was the predecessor of Baoguo Temple. During the reign of Emperor Wuzong of the Tang Dynasty, Lingshan Temple was abandoned. From the second to the fifth year of Huichang reign of Emperor Wuzong of the Tang Dynasty (842-845), the government ordered the demolition of temples and ordered monks and nuns to return to secular life. According to statistics, more than 4,600 large temples and more than 40,000 small temples were demolished at that time. Lingshan Temple was abolished during this extermination campaign. In the first year of Guangming reign of Tang Dynasty, the temple was restored and named Baoguo Temple. In the first year of Guangming in the Tang Dynasty (880), monk Ke Gong of Guoning Temple in Ningbo, at the request of the benefactor, went to Chang'an to write to the court, requesting the restoration of the temple, and was approved. Emperor Xizong of the Tang Dynasty, Li Xuan, granted him the title of Baoguo Temple. The buildings of Baoguo Temple when it was founded in the Tang Dynasty have not survived to this day. When Baoguo Temple was founded in the Tang Dynasty, it was not large in scale. Coupled with the slow development of Buddhism in the late Tang Dynasty and the unsatisfactory social objective conditions, the temple buildings have not survived to this day. In the fourth year of Dazhong Xiangfu reign of Zhenzong of the Song Dynasty (1011), Dexian "returned to Lingshan and saw that the (Baoguo) temple had been destroyed. He touched his hands and sighed, and couldn't bear to go because of the grass." From then on, he became the abbot of the temple and ushered in the first revival of Baoguo Temple. During the Shaoxing period of Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty (1131-1161), monk Zhongqing built the Dharma Hall. Monk Zongpu dug a pure land pond and planted four-color lotuses. At that time, Zhongqing and Zong Hao also built the Sixteenth View Hall in the west of the Dharma Hall, which was later abandoned. Of these construction projects during the Southern Song Dynasty, only the Pure Land Pond remains today. The location of the Dharma Hall still exists, but the building has been rebuilt several times. In the first year of Zhiping reign of Emperor Yingzong of the Song Dynasty (1064), the official granted it the title of "Jingjinyuan", indicating that it already had a certain status among the Buddhist temples at that time. In the sixth year of Hongzhi in the Ming Dynasty, Guichou monk Qingyin rebuilt the ancestral hall and changed its name to Yuntang. During the Hongzhi period of the Ming Dynasty (1488-1505), Qingyin Hall was built and later abandoned. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty (1522-1566), the main hall was rebuilt. During the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty (1628-1644), the foundation of Yun Hall was expanded and renamed Xuanlanzhai. There were two verandas next to it and a photo hall in front. He was deposed in the first year of Qianlong. In the Ming Dynasty, Yingxun Tower was built in the west of Daxiong Hall. Later abandoned. A gatehouse was built in the northeast corner of Daxiong Hall, which was later abandoned. In the 23rd year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1684), Seng Xianzhai and Jing'an rebuilt the main hall, "pulling out the two wings of the parade, enlarging the double eaves, and installing new appearances of Arhats and gods." At the same time, they rebuilt the Dharma Hall and the Hall of Heavenly Kings. Stone railings were erected around the Pure Land Pond. Yan Jing, the imperial censor of the Qing Dynasty and Ming Dynasty, filled in the four characters "Yibi Han Kong" for the Pure Land Pond. In the fifty-fourth year of Kangxi's reign (1715), the abbot Xianzhai "worked hard on the doves and materials, cultivated the defects and made up for the defects, and within a few years it was beautiful." In the tenth year of Qianlong's reign (1745), Seng Wei'an and Tizhai "removed beams, replaced columns, erected frames and planted couplets" in the main hall, and rebuilt the Tianwang Hall. In the first year of Jiaqing (1795), the main hall was rebuilt and the statues of Arhats and gods were remodeled. In the 13th year of Jiaqing (1808), the bell tower was moved to the east of the main hall. In the 15th year of Jiaqing (1810), a new Drum Tower was built in the west of the main hall. In the second year of Xuantong (1910), the Tianwang Hall and the East Guest Hall were destroyed by fire. In the third year of Xuantong, Seng Yizhai was rebuilt. In the 20th year of the Republic of China (1913), Seng Yizhai built a five-room sutra collection building (the lower floor is a Dharma hall) and a ten-room guest room building on the west side. Teachers and students of Nanjing Institute of Technology discovered this ancient building during the national cultural relics survey in 1954, and it was later verified by Professors Chen Congzhou and Liu Dunzhen that it was a Northern Song Dynasty building.

Situated at the base of Taibai Mountain, Tiantong Temple is an integral part of the Five Chan Buddhism Temples. Spanning over 76,400 sqm (822362.76 sqft), this Buddhist temple boasts a rich history dating back 1700 years to its construction during the West Jin Dynasty in 300 A.D. In addition to its religious significance, Tiantong Temple offers breathtaking vistas and a plethora of crimson structures which ascend towards the mountains.
This is one of the must see temples around Ningbo. Surprisingly, a lot of the buildings have survived the destruction of the cultural revolution. While easily accessible either by taxi or bicycle (I find it quite safe to ride around Ningbo and its surroundings) the temple site feels like a lifetime away from the hustle and bustle of the city. You should give yourself at least half a day to explore the different parts of the temple complex and the surrounding forest. It can get a bit busy on weekends, but if you want to beat the crowds, try to make it there early.
