Had a nice walk in the forest outside the shrine. The sacred Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi sword is housed within the premises but unfortunately the visitors are not allowed to see it.

(Translated by Google) I visited Atsuta Shrine, where the Ten Murakumo Sword (Kusanagi Sword) is enshrined. Regarding the Three Sacred Treasures, I have already visited the Imperial Palace and Ise Grand Shrine, so I decided to take the opportunity to visit them during my trip to the Kansai region. I don't know what will happen, but I have a weakness for those three major ○○, so I tend to follow the three famous waterfalls and the three famous gardens. However, for people from the Kanto region, it was quite difficult to transfer to the Meitetsu train at Kanayama Station. It's like the Keikyu train at Shinagawa Station in the Kanto region. However, I managed to arrive at Jingumae Station. At Jingumae Station, I took the opportunity to eat some shimen at a shop inside the station, and it was very delicious. The food in Nagoya is delicious. Atsuta Shrine itself looks like Meiji Shrine, with a solemn atmosphere and a cool atmosphere, but the grounds itself are about one-third of Meiji Shrine and I could walk around it in 20 minutes. Personally, the Kaguraden was impressive. The appearance is reminiscent of Nijo Castle. I thought it was a shrine that was popular as an oasis in the city. Kusanagi Ken is romantic, and I would like to thank you for allowing me to temporarily stay near it.

Great place to go with family/ friends. It's a place with a long history. Roughly it takes around 1 hour to cover the entire area. There are few restuarants and food stalls inside the premises. Washrooms available. Enough parking spaces available. I think evening is the best time to visit here.

One of the major shrines in Nagoya. The shrines were great and the huge shrine gates were magnificent. There were several parking lots nearby but only one was open late after 5pm.

(Translated by Google) I was able to visit Nagoya at the end of March! Three kinds of sacred treasures The sword of Kusanagi is enshrined here. It is said that Oda Nobunaga made a surprise attack and defeated Imagawa Yoshimoto's 25,000 troops (there are various theories) with 2,000 soldiers. This shrine is irresistible for history buffs, as it is said that before heading to the famous Battle of Okehazama, people prayed for victory at Atsuta Shrine (*ˊᗜˋ*)ノ I'm going to have a new work system starting in April, so I'm going to visit Okehazama! Standing in front of the torii gate, it already has an overwhelming presence. Once you pass through the torii gate, the sacred atmosphere will calm your mind! On the way, I cleaned my hands and mouth and looked at the large camphor tree as I entered the main shrine. I prayed that I would definitely win! And of course I received a winning charm! You can also see a treasure trove and various swords! I'm glad you came

Good place to walk around but during the New Years this place is pack with lots of people very crowded but despite that you can still feel calm and tranquil. Love this place. Close to Atsuta Jingu Station Just one stop from Nagoya station

It is a shrine worthy visit in all seasons, although it can be very crowded even in weekdays. There are numerous old trees in the courtyard, and there is wall-posting or exhibition, on entrance worship avenue, to explain and show the history- development and change- of the Shrine. Shrine also serves as the community center for the locals, such as annual farm-product harvest competition. Similar to most of the shrines in Japan, it is free for access.

(Translated by Google) Since I came to Nagoya, I thought I was going to do some sightseeing and came here. I thought it would be beautiful when it was in full bloom. Atsuta Shrine is famous as a power spot. Even on a rainy day, there were quite a few tourists. It was bigger than I expected, and as I walked up to the main shrine, I felt like it was like Ise Grand Shrine (lol) Explore while looking at the map around the precincts. I also received three Goshuin stamps. Oh, Kokota wasn't called a goshuin, it was called a divine seal book. There seemed to be two places outside the temple grounds, but it was raining and cold so I gave up on both (lol) Also, if I have a chance, I would like to receive a divine seal book from outside the precincts.

(Translated by Google) I went in the afternoon on a weekday. The goshuin stamps are carefully written, and fortune slips and amulets are sold next to them. I bought a bill to ward off evil spirits. There were places where you could eat kishimen and buy kiyome mochi. It was my first time going there, but I would like to go there regularly from now on.

(Translated by Google) It feels like the atmosphere changes when you pass through the torii gate. Although I visited after 4:00 pm, the parking lot was full and the temple grounds were so busy that I couldn't believe it was in the evening. Also, compared to the last time I came here, the number of foreign tourists is completely different. Gravel roads have poor drainage in places and can get dirty easily, so it's best not to wear very good shoes.

Yakushi-ji, a Buddhist temple originally constructed in 680, is one of Nara's significant landmarks and was once part of the Seven Great Temples in the area. Situated in Nishinokyo, it can be reached by bus from downtown Nara or by Kintetsu Line train. The temple is home to remarkable Buddhist images and is an ideal stop for those interested in Buddhism and planning to spend more than a day in Nara.
This temple was amazing! The left side pagoda has these bronze relief scenes inside of Buddha that are incredible (no photos allowed). The Buddhas here are absolutely beautiful. It’s a rather large complex with much to view, it’s worth the higher package price of ¥1,700.
Annie Sobol — Google review
The temple is easily reached by train, although the temple entrance is on the opposite side to the station entrance. The temple compound is quite large and the buildings are well preserved. The entrance fee is 800yen. It is worth a visit if you have the time.
Judy OBrien — Google review
Eventhough this place is located little bit away from the Nara Park area, the 500yen Bus Pass can take you here without any additional charge. However there is an entry fee to the location and had normal and special ticket. The special ticket gives access inside the pagoda ad well and is costlier by almost 800yen than the latter as of July 2023. Quite picturesque landscape and can certainly considering visiting this place of you have time to spare during your Nara Itinerary.

Mantokuji Temple is a Shingon sect temple known for its stunning Japanese garden and picturesque autumn foliage. As a designated national scenic spot, the temple charges an admission fee of 400 yen to view the beautiful garden. Visitors can also climb stairs to reach the main shrine where they can see the national treasure statue of Amida Nyorai. Though many stairs may tire visitors out, they will be healed by colorful autumn leaves along their journey.

Ryōan-ji

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Ryōan-ji is a 15th-century temple in Kyoto, Japan, known for its famous Zen rock garden. Established during the Muromachi period, the temple's dry landscape garden uses stones and sand to represent water without actually using water. This unique feature has earned it recognition as a World Heritage Site and both a National Site of Special Scenic Beauty and a National Historic Site. The sand in the garden symbolizes the sea, with lines drawn to represent waves using a rake.
A temple of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect and a World Heritage Site. It was originally a country house and it was converted in 1450 to a Zen training temple. It is a beautiful Zen Garden situated in a park like setting. It is easily accessible by public transportation. Be sure and visit the entire park. So nice place environment are too good ❤

This is my favorite place in Kyoto. My first visit was when I lived here in the 90's and I try to go whenever I make it back. The grounds are beautiful and peaceful. You can walk around and enjoy the sense of ancient history or go directly to the temple and gaze on the peaceful rock garden. I love the huge wooden beams and paintings on the sliding doors. I try to imagine what it must have been like to live in a place like this in ancient times. My father has some mobility issues and we were able to take a taxi and get close enough for him to walk in at a sedate pace. Be prepared to take your shoes off at the entrance. The shop sells the typical omamori charms for good health and so forth. They also sell incense and wall art and those books that you can take to temples for stamps. I have a wall print of one of the large rocks from the garden as well as some incense to burn in memory of my mother. We visited here once together so coming back is a bit of a homage to those memories.

I have to say I was expecting the famous rock garden to be more impressive. There are companies that have more impressive zen gardens in their headquarters. Don't get me wrong - it's nice but just disappointing. It is also a little far from the center of Kyoto so I'd recommend skipping it unless you are spending several days in town and really want to see it for yourself.

Top-tier location among a competitive field of World Heritage sites in Kyoto. Free bike parking, amazing garden with 100+ acres associated with the grounds, and a beautiful zen garden. The souvenirs shop by the garden has unique items I’ve never seen before and is reasonably priced. A top spot to visit and significantly less crowded than other, more well known, sites.

This is beautiful and the rock garden is actually inside the temple so we went around twice thinking we missed it which is pretty funny. No shoes means no shoes I used the step to climb and remove shoes and that is a big no! The lake is pretty where I saw a blue heron and ducks and here and there saw lotus flowers. I enjoyed this stop however I guess I expected more of a temple. It was pretty rock garden and truly a place where you can reflect on things. The dragons from different centuries on special display was interesting. Entry is ¥600. Worth it to see another unesco world heritage site

This temple will be another stop while seeing Kinkakuji Temple, they will go hand in hand so you'll end up here as well. Ryoan-ji gives a different atmosphere than Kinkakuji because of the peaceful environment and park atmosphere, you can sit and enjoy the view and even the zen garden. There is a good amount to see and less crowded compared to the nearby temple. The gifts and souvenirs here are also wonderful and you may definitely end up buying something. Expect to spend a good portion of the day here, there is a lot to take in and enjoy the peaceful serenity of the temple environment.

A fantastic place to visit during the fall in Kyoto. It costs 500 Yen to enter and it’s absolutely worth it. The views are incredible and the Rock Garden is serene. The walls were built using clay and boiling oil creating a unique and lasting color/texture. The surrounding area is full of beautiful colors from the changing foliage.
Ibe — Google review
I underestimated the size of Ryoan-ji, thinking it was just the rock garden. A large portion of the temple grounds is a lake. It hosts a variety of flora all around it and it's all lined with moss. The trees tower over the pathway and you can take a relaxing stroll around the lake for a more romantic vibe. The main attraction, the rock garden, is stunning. There is something captivating about these rocks suspended along grains of white rocks. All other visitors were quiet, as if we were all entranced by the view. Highly recommend going in the winter so you don't contend the space with many tourists, and you can get front row seats to view the garden

The word "Zen" is the perfect description of this temple. A lake with a small island where we can watch fish, swans and listen to birdsong. The temple has several Japanese gardens where we can sit, admire them and think of nothing else. It's a soothing place par excellence.
Pierre Degrootte (Pierre Le Grand) — Google review
It’s a typical serene and nature-filled environment as with most gardens and temples in Kyoto, what sets this one apart would probably be the stone garden. At a glimpse it may just look like well placed rocks and nothing more, but the significance of such gardens is in how well they prepare your mind for meditation, a blank mind is the way and I find that staring into that open space for a while actually helps in that regard. It’s a great place to clear your mind when you find yourself perplexed with thought.
Kingston Obike — Google review

Just absolutely amazing place the gardens are exquisite and Temple consists of 15 carefully arranged rocks placed on a bed of white gravel. The rocks are arranged in such a way that, from any angle, only 14 of the rocks are visible at a time. This design is meant to symbolize the transience of life and the impermanence of all things.

Not far from Kinkakuji yet a million miles away. The ultimate zen experience. Take your time making your way to the temple, then sit for a while taking in the rock garden. Magical when snow falls, and stunning in both spring and autumn

One of the last spots in Kyoto with autumn leaves in early December. The grounds themself were pretty but the zen garden was small. Lots of pretty trees around the lake area. Overall a peaceful and calm place. Bus 52 took us there but it’s also one of the only busses to take you back. Came about 20+ min between each so watch the time when you are trying to leave. Cannot bring drinks inside.
Kelly K — Google review
Possibly the most iconic rock garden in Japan. There are 15 rocks in the garden, but no matter which angle you look at, you will only see 13-14 rocks. The earthen wall is not level but rather slope down toward the corner to give an illusion that the garden looks bigger than it's actually is. The round stone basin (looks like a coin) has a hidden meaning "I just know enough" which symbolises Zen Buddhism teaching to be content with what you have. Recommended you to go as early as possible to avoid the crowds and get full experience of this temple.

I actually had no plan to visit this temple. I just saw this temple's name on the bus stop and made up my mind to check it out. Once I entered the gate.. I was in awe. The colours of the trees in the temple were so amazing. All leaves turned into red and yellow which looked absolutely beautiful. The atmosphere.. the vibes.. the tranquillity.. really impressed me much. I was sitting by the rock garden for quite long to enjoy the beautiful moment. This Ryoanji temple is definitely worth visiting when you're in Kyoto.

Sights & Landmarks
Tōfuku-ji Temple, established in 1236, is a prominent Buddhist temple located in the southeast of Kyoto City. It boasts stunning gardens that are particularly famous for their vibrant fall foliage. The South Garden is intricately designed to reflect Chinese Mythology, incorporating elements such as white sand representing the sea and five hillocks symbolizing important Zen temples in Kyoto.
One of the most famous temples in Kyoto. The temple itself is surely beautiful, but what makes this temple especially famous is the view of red leaves autumn. It is amazing to see this old temple with a red carpet made of tons of autumn leaves. You don't want to miss here if you visit Kyoto in autumn.

Old zen temple. ¥500 for entrance to Zen garden was nice. Given the size of the area if you incl the bridge scene there's some grand feel to the north west side view. Another ¥500 if you want to go on the bridge (saved this for our next trips to Kyoto). Probably an overall 4.5

Beautiful temple. Very clean and nice. Zen and moss gardens are very beautiful. Do visit if you are near this place. There is an entrance ticket as well.

🍁Autumn leaves are beautiful. It cost ¥1000 to enter the area with the red momiji but it is entirely worth it. There are other areas such as the temple itself but they also cost a few hundred yen to enter so I didn’t bother. It was fairly crowded during peak foliage season in the weekend, but entirely manageable. There was enough space that people don’t end up touching / piling up. Memorable experience.

One of the highlights in Kyoto. No matter the season, Tofukuji temple offers peace, scenic spots, delicious fresh rice cakes and hot tea, and more. The smell of the trees around and in the grounds of the temple is amazing. In the morning, the visitors can mingle with the locals whilst they walk their pets or go to school/work or go shopping. The whole area offers a glimpse of a Japanese community living peacefully in a touristic spot.

Tofuku-ji Temple is one of the Kyoto Gozan or "five great Zen temples of Kyoto" and a must visit. The ¥1000 entry fee to the garden is well worth for the unique Zen garden features like the chessboard moss garden on the northern side and the dramatic rock gardens on the southern side. The connecting bridge gives a breathtaking views of the foliage below, making it a must-visit for garden enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. It is a 15 minute walk from the Fushimi Inari Shrine, which makes it easily accessible and convenient if you are visiting the temples in the Fushimi Ward. Although the temple is best appreciated during the peak of autumn, it still offers a serene experience outside of the season, with mossy trees and beautifully designed shrubs surrounding the temple grounds. Definitely make this stop in your Kyoto visit, to take in the tranquility of this natural beauty.

Just came here because it is close to another temple that we visited. By surprise this is one of the most beautiful temple garden that we visited in Kyoto, also it's not crowded like those popular temples. Really hope to come here again during autumn to see the red leaves.

We visited on the 2nd January it was quiet but steady. This temple has it all for me. Architecture, History, Beauty and Gardens. It is a contrast to other noisy shrines. I recommend buying the combined ticket to enter the Bridge and Gardens.

one of the best places to enjoy autumn foliage in Kyoto. there’s usually a crowd especially during the foliage season. afternoon light around 4 pm was beautifully reflected on the antique wooden bridge.

Given that the aggregate ticket is a whopping ¥1000 for an independent visit that won't take long unless you sit down for a break, I would go with 2 stars. There really isn't much to see at this time of the year (May), it seems most of the satisfied visitors stopped by during specific times of the year when the foliage is a lot more interesting to stare at. Of course, it may very well be that the management board has its own reasons for making the ticket so expensive, such as upkeep costs, etc. , but I have been to more memorable temples the ticket for which cost half as much. Ironically, the best photos I took were all outside of the pay-to-enter area (the 2 star rating applies only to said area)

I loved the place! I found it just by accident, but it was really great. Not too many people, making the place more enjoyable and chill. I really recommend going to the zen garden inside the temple, really great experience.

Is it worth a visit? When you visit Kyoto, first visit this temple. It is an ancient temple built with wooden structures and you would be amazed by the way the architecture. It is 5 mins walk from the metro station, and as you walk, you get the vibe of temple city of Kyoto… every buildings entrance has a frame made up of wood and welcoming. You can go around, take photos and you need to pay around 1000yen, to walk around inside and the garden. Inside and garden, you get view of the maple trees turning Colors if you visit late October or November. I visited here last week of October. But felt I should had delayed by 15 days. As many trees were still green… and many had changed too. You need atleast 1.5 hours to visit this beautiful temple

Entry fee: 1000yen (Peak autumn season) A huge garden filled with beautiful reddish momiji leaves during the Autumn season. It felt like I was in a different world when walking along the paths of this majestic place. It was worth every yen I paid for and I would come back here again when I have the chance to do so. PS - There was an autumn night illumination event for a fixed period of time. The tickets have to be purchased online and in advance. I wanted to visit this place for the autumn night illumination initially, but the tickets were sold out. The ticket cost for that is 3000yen. This information is as of 2023. Please check the official website for the latest update 🤗

Easily accessible via JR Nara as it’s just one stop from Kyoto station and a 10m walk. We were lucky with the timing and got to witness the changing autumn colours - 1,000¥ pp to gain access to the garden and bridge for viewing the foliage. You can skip the paid area and still see the foliage from the bridge from the top. The temple is packed around 11am but it is organized with guards ensuring the flow of foot traffic. Lots of snack stalls inside and outside of the temple if you need to sit and relax!

Very nice temple with excellent views of the fall foliage. November 18 there was a nice mix of red, orange, yellow and some green. Expensive entrance (1000 yen) just for one area (the bridge).

Very impressive temple with almost no tourists. Which makes it very pleasant to immerse yourself in the history. I can highly recommend the wooden bridge that takes you on a walk through the crowns of the trees and above a little creek.

Tofuku-ji is a serene gem in Kyoto and a wonderful alternative to the crowded hotspots. With its stunning gardens and architecture, it offers a tranquil atmosphere for those looking for a peaceful escape. A must-visit for anyone seeking beauty without the crowds. Don’t forget to bring cash as other payment options are not accepted.

The maple leaves at Tofukuji Temple are beautiful. But there were too many people. The connecting Bridge is nothing special. The entrance fee is 1,000 yen.
