Matera

Italy’s picturesque ‘Capital of Culture’ for 2019, Matera is a World Heritage Site. This southern Italian city is unique as it’s remained relatively unchanged since the Middle Ages and is one of the best-preserved examples of a traditional Mediterranean hilltown. A unique characteristic of the city is its "sassi" (stone houses), which are striking to view and can be reached by foot or by funicular.

The place gives its best in the SUNSET, when lights are on and one starts seeing a never ending Nativity Scene. Simply TO CONTEMPLATE. That's all. It's worth spending a while to imagine... and empathize with big feelings of ancient sharing such as only very aged people have really experienced.

Historical place
Sasso Caveoso is a must-see in Matera, located in the labyrinthian area of the city. It houses Musma, Italy's most important sculpture museum, showcasing works inside Palazzo Pomarici and excavated chambers. The neighboring Sasso Barisano district and Murgia Materana Park offer additional exploration opportunities.
Sasso Caveoso was an excellent historical place to see, to breath, to take in the warm dry air. It smells and feels like history, going back in time in a time capsule. Truly magnificent. The only problem is with the entitled tourists that I get to see once in a while. Generally from China, USA, upper Western Europe. A brief history: After the war, therefore, the Sassi Caveosi were completely abandoned. And they have remained so to this day. A large part is still uninhabited today. But perhaps it is precisely this that gives the Caveoso an innate charm The Sasso Caveoso of Matera contains the architectural and social history of the people of Matera. It is the southernmost district of the historic center of the Sassi which, compared to the other 2, Civita and Sasso Barisano, is more or less the same as it once was. Architectural features The houses of the Caveoso have been dug into the rock, like all the older ones of the Sassi. The living environment, therefore, was essentially underground, and had no windows except for a small window on the entrance door.

Matera is one of the oldest city in the world 9,000years old with an amazing history. It's pure magic stepping back in time. The center of the city is very modern and has many restaurants and shops. There is a Salvatore Dali museum. To understand the history read, Carlos Levi's book, "Christ stopped in Eboli".
Lucia Volino — Google review
Matera is magical. It may be one of the oldest continually occupied cities in the world. Settled by the Romans since 251 BC. Stepping into the Sassi area is a trip back in time. It is now a grey monument to many cultures. Families lived in caves without running water until 1960s when people moved away. It feels like a ghost town that is now being reborn. It is breathtaking at night and has around 20 churches many cut out of stone. For 2019 it was named the European Capital if Culture. Its moods change constantly with light and weather. Magnificent in simplicity and every view breathtaking.

The Casa Noha multimedia exhibit inside a 16th-century family home in Matera showcases the history of the city and its unique buildings. The exhibit is in multiple languages, and is a great place to begin your trip to Matera.
The history of Matera is not just beautiful, but also tragic. In just half an hour a film, projected on the walls of different rooms of this historici Sassi house, takes you through all of it. The shop has a wide range of history related books and other souvenirs. I will never look at Matera the same way. Highly recommended.

Interesting place. Basically it is a short movie about Matera history, so you should not expect to see some exhibitions apart from the old house itself. I would rather dedicate time for some cave house with preserved furniture.
Predrag Maletic — Google review
Sensitively communicates some of the history of the Sassi using projections onto the walls of the rooms left to the foundation. The soundtrack is in Italian but English is available via a headset device (with Corona correct earpiece covers)

100% must do if you are interested about the history of the city. The movie is +/- 30 mins long which is not too demanding for your attention span. We highly recommend. There is also a room with a giant screen offering different tours of the city, which you can synchronise on your mobile with Google maps and then go for your own walk following their routes, which we found very useful.

A 25 minute video of the history of Matera and of the Sassi in particular, in an old cave house (bare of furniture). A very good first stop to give you a better idea of what you're seeing as you wander around Matera. Close to the Duomo, which is also worth a visit at the same time.

My husband and I visited Matera as a day trip and didn’t have much time to learn about the history of the town and the people who lived there. We saw mention of the exhibit in our Lonely Planet guide and were so glad that we made the visit. The information in the video gave us a much deeper understanding of the sassi, the tragedy of many of the people that lived there and the work that’s happened in recent years to bring the sassi back to life. Really well done- we would highly recommend!

Palombaro Lungo is a subterranean cistern that was carved from rock beneath a bustling plaza during the 19th century. Visitors can take guided tours of this historical site, which offers insight into the past. This attraction is worth visiting to learn about its history, and there are many restaurants in the area. However, exploration requires a lot of walking, so visitors should be prepared for that.
Found this place by chance, on the second day of my vacation I decided to do things differently. I just went around the town without a definite plan of what to see. I just let my curiosity guide me, and so far I've found various tourist attractions without putting in half the effort needed to plan on which places to visit. So far so good, it feels so much better when you stumble upon something than when you put all your effort in searching for it.

Located just outside of the Sassi di Matera, Palombaro lungo is an underground cistern, carved into the rock. It is located underneath the town square and is therefore very accessible. Guided tours are available and public toilets can be found only a few metres away.

This an impressive underground water cistern that's exactly what it says on the tin. The 10-12 minute walk inside is worth the 3€ (April 2023) asking price. There's no need for a guided tour unless you happen to be particularly interested in the topic.
Thomas Soininen — Google review
Its not worth 5€. Its just a big carved well. Its not that big to be honest. Most attractions are cheaper and much better. If you rich, buy it. If you a student, its not worth it.

It just takes a few minutes to walk along the causeway and view the inside of this man made water cistern and marvel at what humans can do. Don’t forget to look up at the wells at street level and read the leaflet given to you at the door. Just a couple of euro and another interesting thing to do in your day in Matera. Closed 1-3pm

Its interesting to see, but it isn't a must. If you have time, go. You have to pay to enter, but there isn't much to do or see there. You just go down the stairs look around a little...Turn around and go back in the same way.

Definitely worth a visit - entry fee €3. Located just under the main square in Matera - Piazza Vittorio Veneto. This massive cistern once provided the water for the city in the summer. Could hold 5m litres of water and is 14m deep. You can see the holes in the roof where residents lowered buckets down from the square to access the water. In 1991 when a decision was to open it to the public, scuba divers went in first as it was still full with water. No advance booking possible - just turn up.

Palombari are huge public cisterns that collected spring water for drinking. Apart from them, people dug their own smaller cisterns for private use for themselves and the live stock which lived with them. Palombaro Lungo was the biggest public cistern active from 16c and enlarged over the centuries. It had a capacity of 5 million liters with a depth of 16 and length of 50 met. The shape is irregular which is a result of digging and joining together several small cisterns around. The cistern walls were sealed with a water proof plaster. People collected water with with aluminum buckets through a well which was on the square, which doesn't exist any more. It was destroyed in 1927 when a national aqueduct was built. However, you can see the mouth of well from the cistern interior. The Palombaro cistern was rediscovered in 1991 during public works on the square. It's located on the main square of Matera. Entry fee is low, 3 Euros, and will consume around 15 min of your time

Pretty inexpensive at € 3 entry, only need about 15 minutes though to see. Amazing what can be beneath our feet, just out of sight!

We visited Palombaro Lungo in Matera, paying a few euros per person. Upon entering, we descended numerous steps with open backs, starting from a considerable height. For those uncomfortable with such steps or heights, beware. However, the descent offered little in terms of sightseeing. Like many other attractions in Matera, it felt more like a money-making venture than an engaging experience. Exploring the city's architecture outside proved far more enjoyable. Overall, our visit felt like a brief, unexciting detour, lasting no more than five minutes.

The historical Sassi di Matera is a popular tourist destination with impressive cave networks and extensive archaeological findings from the Paleolithic era. The city has been inhabited for centuries, with recent renovations adding new accommodations options to the mix. Cave tours are a must for visitors to experience the wonders of this unique place.
Wonderful and charming place. We visited as part of the tour that helped to learn about the area and skip queue when entering old house dwellings and one of the stone churches. Place got really busy around lunchtime, so perhaps better to plan to visit early in the morning. Toilet facilities are not free, so make sure to have some euro coins.

Beautiful place, unique in the world. It looks going back in time. The architecture and the atmosphere of the place makes everything magic. You can find a lot of bed and breakfast where staying, but be ready to walk with the luggages. The town itself is small but nice. A guided tour is suggested to reach the best angles and to know where the movie sets have been placed. It could be also very romantic, if you come with the right person of course. You need the car or an organized tour to reach the place, but once you are here it is not needed. Highly recommended

Gorgeous stone town. Extremely busy even at the end of October. Thousands of people and hundreds of groups roam the streets so it’s rather difficult to enjoy the full beauty of the surroundings. Definitely visit but arm yourself with lots of patience. Easy to get to from Bari, via bus with two departures, at 7.30am and 4pm.

Baccanti Italian restaurant is situated in the heart of the Sassi district, and specializes in dishes from Lucania and the Murge region with attention to quality ingredients and presentation. The wine cellar offers a variety of regional wines.
Properly the best dinner we had in Italy. Amazing atmosphere. We had two antipasto, two secondo and two deserts, everything very good. Very friendly staff.

All of the dishes were excellent. The service was perfect. The squab was fantastic. The only complaint would be the price of the lamb chops. The flavor was excellent, but 3 lamb chops for 36e seems a bit high.

This was my first Michelin star experience, I went a while back but had forgotten to review until now. We went at lunch and it was super empty which made it feel very exclusive and special - only a few other parties were there. The staff were polite and knowledgeable. Great service. Food was a little disappointing as we had better at a few other places in Matera while visiting that weren't star restaurants. Though the ambiance was great and I would go back just for that!

Excellent service, beautiful setting. The food was good but was a bit short of great, the lamb was a bit overcooked and lacked flavor. Was a little underwhelmed by the flavors of the different items on the menu we ordered, the dessert however made up for it.

I had a pleasant experience at this fine dining restaurant in Matera. The service was attentive and friendly, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The food was delicious, though not extraordinary. I particularly enjoyed the truffle pasta, even though it was a bit cold. The desserts were ambitious but didn't quite reach their full potential. Nevertheless, I would recommend this place.

From the appetizer to dessert, it's a one-of-a-kind experience. This spot is a gem for savoring Matera's cuisine elevated to new heights. You won't find words for their take on vitello tonnato—it's that good. The wine choices are top-notch, but honestly, the service takes everything up a thousand notches.

A very special place, in terms of warm atmosphere in the grotto, local “zero kilometer” dishes, excellent service. If you’re looking for a special night, as a couple, family or group, this is a great place. The wine and bubbles list is a huge book. The dishes are unique, good sized portions and creative, without the exaggerated designs on the plates so you can actually enjoy the food itself. Really well done. Access close by car as well in case people don’t want to do lots of stairs.
Naila M — Google review
Beautiful restaurant located in a cave dwelling. Unfortunately the staffs were not friendly and welcoming. Never saw a smile on their faces. Don’t expect much from the food, it was nothing special, and they put too much salt in the all the dishes. My tongue was numb after the meal because of the salt. But I wasn’t bothered that much, because Matera is too beautiful.
Quan Nguyen — Google review
This whole meal was a delight. Firstly - the setting is within a cave in Matera, with a lovely welcoming ambience. They brought out a free starter - I think it was local pork in apricots, what a way to start. I had the veal to start which is nice, but the only starter you need to get is the podolico cheese flan - I tried my friends and it was incredible. The white Lucan ragout was agreed to be the best pasta dish we had as a table, it had a perfect balance of butter, spinach and the meat. For deserts the local bread desert (I can’t remember the name!) was delicious. Can’t recommend this restaurant enough, it was the best we went to whilst in Puglia.

The restaurant L'Abbondanza Lucana serves delicious Lucanian cuisine, with local cheeses and meats as starters and hearty pasta dishes with fava beans, mixed vegetables and mint as main courses. There is also a good selection of Lucanian wines.
The location is off the main attraction in Matera. We came without a reservation but the staff showed us to a table right away. We ordered plate tasting antipasti which consisted of four small dishes local to the region. I like the ricotta with sweet celery. Then for main course we ordered lamb and veal. Présentation is good, taste is good and portion is big. There was a big group dining so the staffs were busy with them. My glass was empty since I finished the starter but was not offered another drink. Anyway, that's ok because it was compensated by the beautiful authentic architecture.
Aldila D — Google review
We were excited to dine here after seeing it recommended in various publications, but, unfortunately, we did not have a good experience. We ordered the mixed antipasti platter and explained that we are vegetarians. We were told that was no problem. On tasting it was clear that one of the antipasti contained fish. We explained again that we are vegetarians and were told that 'in Italy vegetarians eat fish'... As well as being an inappropriate way to deal with a customer, this is simply untrue. When our primi arrived, I was served a pasta that I did not order. When I raised the issue with the waiter he looked surprised, then told me that the one I had ordered had sold out. If this was true, it should have been explained to me before serving me an alternative that I did not choose. Later, a neighbouring table was served the pasta dish that I had originally ordered, suggesting that it had not, in fact, sold out... We enjoyed some nice local wine, good bread and olive oil, however quite serious mistakes were made and rather than receiving apologies we were lied to and patronised. Overall, not an enjoyable meal.
Max Martin — Google review
This is a lovely restaurant serving elevated local dishes. The antipasto is very special. The pasta divine. We didn't have room for anything else. Quality and price proportionate. Recommend.
Nick Stowe — Google review
Both our pasta dishes were served cold on the inside and lukewarm at best on the outside. Both lacked all taste and freshness. My pasta was even overcooked, so how that can be cold in the middle reeks like warmed up food to me. The recommended wine was unfortunately supermarket level at best. After our complaint we just wanted to pay and leave and eat elsewhere. Apologies were sparse and I was more then unpleasantly surprised to be confronted with a full bill, which of course I refused to pay in full (we both only had one bite from our dishes). Just paid for the water and the bottle of wine that was kindly packed for us in a takeaway paper bag (you can retrieve it from the dustbin opposite your restaurant, if you like). The audacity….

This restaurant was recommended to us by a local coffee shop owner. We were thoughroughly impressed with the set out and the food was divine. The quality and the service were impeccable. 9.2 out of 10.

L"abbondanza is one of those places that you will always remember. The food is based on the best products of the region and is creatively prepared and beautifully presented. The decore is elegant and rustic at the same time. The winelist is both regionall deep and extensive. This is the magic that happens when the owners care deeply about quality, tradition and creative innovation. Among the top 20 places where I have eaten. Wonderful!

Disappointing meal. Had high expectations being Michelin recommended and the expensive price point only to be very disappointed with the pastas we ordered: both were very average, bland and not appetising. However, the service was excellent.

The owner was obnoxiously rude and sent us away claiming "We are full" (they weren't). They seemed understaffed. Maybe he was having a bad day, but even so...

The food was amazing but the portions are fairly small. Normally I only take a primi because I don't eat much, but the portion wasn't big enough to fill me up. The quality was very good though. Take into account that the staff only speaks limited English, but they are friendly. Our wine was served a bit too warm and when we told them they brought us new glasses immediately.

Such a wonderful place! We came for lunch and found this intimate restaurant on the Michelin guide! We had an amazing experience there, everything was perfect. The food was delicate and elegant, the place itself was beautiful, the waiters were lovely and the view was breathtaking. Thank you so much for this precious moment!

It’s hard to believe this is a Michelin star restaurant. As others have noted the dining room is not a comfortable experience due to how large and echoey it is. They had closed the terrace the night we were there which was very disappointing, if we were seated out there it could have made the experience a lot better and made up somewhat for the boring food. Food is arranged and presented in a weird formulaic faux artistic way which does not make up for how tasteless and boring it is. One of the courses was lamb and was tough with a huge streak of fat through the middle of the piece of meat. I was hopeful that at least dessert would be nice but it was awful, boring and tasteless. This restaurant is extremely overpriced, our degustation menu was €95 per person. Not worth it at all. Big no and wish we had not gone there.

Enjoyed a fantastic lunch with my wife at Dimora Ulmo today. We’ve been fortunate enough to eat in many Michelin-starred restaurants in Italy and around the world and Dimore Ulmo was as good if not better than any Michelin one star restaurant we’ve enjoyed. The service was highly professional, impeccable and friendly and the atmosphere, while not exactly casual, was neither unapproachable or stuffy. It felt welcoming. The restaurant only does tasting menus, five or seven courses. We went with the five course and it was exceptional. The owners and chefs are graduates of Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana in Modena and it shows in the attention to detail, texture and taste and of course presentation. We passed a lovely three hours and enjoyed courses, amongst others, of fermented egg in mushroom foam, a beef cheek that is as good as I’ve ever tasted and a tuna tartare in a mandarin gel that was out of this world. Truthfully if this restaurant doesn’t get a star soon that will be a travesty but whether it does or not is nearly irrelevant. Food this good does not need a star to validate it. The wine menu is exceptional and vast. I picked a nice white wine to start that wasn’t in stock and the substitute that was suggested was just as good (perhaps better) and nearly half the price. The red wine was exceptional also as their choice of quality local aglianicos is particularly deep (including some exceptional Fucci’s). Couldn’t recommend this restaurant highly enough. Expensive, yes , but with two nice bottles of wine, a five course tasting menu, amuse bouches and petit fours etc it came in south of €250 for both of us. That is not cheap of course but for the quality of service, ingredients and food and wine, it’s exceptional value for money.

My wife and I enjoyed an outstanding dinner with wine pairing. Not one single point of criticism. Everything was perfect beyond expectations. Worth the price and then some. If you cherish the ultimate in food and wine: Go there!

The most incredible, scenic, attentive, and Michelin star worthy restaurant in Matera! Much more of an experience than a restaurant. Truly a must if you’re visiting! An explosion of flavors coupled with an extensive wine selection and breathtaking views of the Sassi. A true gem 💎

A very nice experience The restaurant is located in a stunning building with a discreet entrance behind a set of closed doors where you press a doorbell for admittance. Beautifully decorated with chandeliers & modern art - all tastefully put together as only the Italians can do. There are various degustation menus from Euro 80 to 120. The menu is explained beautifully by the impeccably dressed maitre’d & pre dinner drinks served with stylish panache. The restaurant is huge but on this cold winter Monday’s evening, only 2 tables were seated so service & attention to detail was spot on. The food service was flawless & our courses served at the perfect pace. Each dish seemed to get better than the last - although every dish was well executed. Presentation & taste were all given much thought & we enjoyed all the dishes. Standouts were the beef tartare & the pasta as well as the pre dinner snacks & petit fours served at the conclusion with a complimentary limoncello (home made & very strong!) Overall - an very good experience & totally satisfying.

Amazing. One of the best tasting menus I have ever tried & excellent wine pairing. Every dish was amazing. Top 4 from the seven courses menu selected by the chef: - tuna tartare, buffalo cheese cream and tangerine film - squid, green chlorophyl and pickled cauliflowers - salmon trout, coconut, corn sauce - meat balls with spinach Very friendly and professional service (Francesco). Beautifull place. Worth the money. If I should returt to the only restaurant in Matera, it would be this one. Thank you very much!

Vitantonio Lombardo is a restaurant located in the Sassi district of Matera, Italy. The restaurant offers a selection of dishes that include classic dishes as well as more modern choices that interact harmoniously with the local environment. Some favorites include pasta with rapa, Burrata, sea bass and black bread, as well as the sweet ravioli filled with two tomatoes.
One Michelin star -> big expectations. I tried 10 courses tasting menu with wine pairing. Presentation of all the courses was absolutely amazing and one of the best I have ever seen. Top 4 from the menu: I dropped the Egg in the garden Unbeliveable combination off the egg and the lavendell. Pizza in "Black" Spaghettone di Gragnano in Carbonara Sauce with Orange, Shrimps and Crusco Amazing, amazing, amazing, one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. The Last Kiss Again, the best dessert I have ever experienced. And experience is the very best word for this, because you consume the dessert not only with one sense ... The wine pairing was OK, but it could be a lot, lot better in my opinion (for example I don't want try a German riesling wine in Italy - even if it's good). The place in the cave is amazing. Kitchen is open, so you can watch the chefs. Very interesting experience.

Wanted to check out this 1 Michelin Star restaurant in Matera. The driving in this town is a bit difficult as we aren’t supposed to drive on certain streets but there’s also no way visitors would know which streets those were. There are cameras everywhere so we’d probably get a ticket 6 months later. The restaurant will explain that we can park in the open space parking right across the street but there are signs every where that tells you unless you are a resident there you can’t park. But supposedly if you are dining in the restaurant you can park there. So park at your own risk. (We parked in a paid garage about 20 mins walk from restaurant) We went during lunch time and we were the only table. No reservations was required. But they say their dinner times are busier. On the menu, you can choose 5 or 7 courses and we opted for 5 for 140 EUR. You then can select any 5 course from the menu. My fav was their “I dropped the egg in the garden” which also happened to be their award winning dish. The simplicity of the ingredients (fresh egg and veggies) but it gave a rush of various flavors as it entered your mouth. The chocolate cake crumbles added a kick to the flavor as well. The rest of the dishes weren’t too unique in my opinion. The sea bass with cream sauce was good. The misery and nobility of veal fillet I felt could have been offered a tad more meat. Portions were quite smaBut they did incorporate Matera history into the presentations of the appetizers and desserts. The appetizer tower is how the stone houses look like. The dessert tower is Triumphal Float, where during the peak celebration is the “strazzo” (destruction) of the float by the people of Matera. The cave ambiance was great though and service was great. We got to meet the chef in the end as well.

3,5/5 We chose the 7 course meal, and decided to let the chef guide our dinner experience and not choose the dishes ourselves. A little disappointing for us to have 2 pasta dishes (ravioli and pasta with veal, okay but not 1 star dishes), one pizza dough dish (looks better than it tastes) and only one meat dish (porc, very nice) in the experience. Too bad because the begging and end were very nice: chefs starters were excellent, the oyster drone interesting, the egg lost in the garden astonishing and the peach dessert excellent. The wine& cocktail pairing was good. So I would definitely recommend to choose your own dishes.

An amazing experience. The staff was completely attentive and the food was absolutely amazing. We had the 8 course which was just the right amount. From start to finish…absolutely fantastic and well deserving of their Michelin Star. Highly recommended

Truly awful. The worst experience in a Michelin-starred restaurant. Awful harsh lighting. The vibe is off. Service was inattentive. Avoid at all costs. The food and experience was uninspiring. Texture and taste was not good on the palate. Having frequented many Michelin starred restaurants something does not add up here. The worst pasta course we experienced on our 2 week Italy trip. I’ve had frozen microwave pasta that is better. We just wanted the meal to end. So skipped a course to speed up the horror show. Desert arrived and it tasted awful, the sorbet still frozen solid in the middle. Asked for the bill. The bill arrived. Waited 15 minutes for the waiter to come and take the card payment. Paid the bill. Finally, time to escape! After we paid, the waiter asked if we enjoyed the meal, we explained the experience was not good. This feedback did not land well with the director of hospitality and the chef. The chef followed/chased us out of the restaurant whilst the rest of the guests looked on at this show. He stood at the edge of the street and watched us as we walked off into the night. Safe in the knowledge that we would never step foot into the terrible place ever again.

Wonderful dining experience in this classic Matera restaurant – meaning you are eating in a cave. Chef Vitantonio Lombardo understands how to give Italian evergreens a tasty twist: the charcoal pizza and the orange carbonara are die for. In addition, the service is extremely attentive and welcoming also making sure our dietary restrictions were met.

We enjoyed a fantastic dinner there in early April. We had 6 dishes tasting experience, the atmosphere was perfect. The dishes we recommend are eggs dropped in the garden, pizza in black, misery n nobility and the dessert cigar. That's creative but also combined the local elements, great. Our family enjoyed the experience there. We really hope to come back again. And at the end of dinner, the chef came out of kitchen shaking hand with us, that's good, because we finally know who was in charge of this amazing kitchen. We felt his passion.

An evening of delight & drama The restaurant is located in a beautiful cave - artfully decorated in a simplistic but tasteful style as only Italian designers seem to know how to do with purposeful lighting. We opted for the 6 course degustation & our service staff were charming, professional & took great pride on their service. The menu consisted of ALL the dishes available & one could choose any 6 courses - entrees/mains/desserts in any combination. All dishes were expertly explained & the introduction of our amuse bouche on a tower representing Matera was very dramatic. It was fun to decide on what dishes to select with input from the staff. The arrival of the chef Vitantonio Lombardo in the kitchen was announced by a chorus of Italian voices (we later realised it was only his voice) - sounds of which floated into the restaurant proper whenever the kitchen door opened! There is a clear glass where the tables in the centre of the restaurant can peer through to see the kitchen action. To say the chef is colourful is an understatement - it looked as if his sous chef & helpers were completely under his command as he barked his instructions. All very dramatic (with some people, it may have been a little disconcerting to see the chef seemingly berating his staff) but it all looked like tough love where he was very strict in how the food was cooked, prepared, plated but I must say - every dish that arrived at our table was pure perfection! The chef is a big man (in size & stature) whilst his assistants all seemed much smaller in size so it looked a little like comedic entertainment in a cartoon! The restaurant started to fill up & all dishes seemed to come out of the kitchen in a precise flow. It is obvious perfection is demanded not only in the kitchen but out front with the service staff as well. Each dish was amazing but standout dishes were the black pizza, pigeon cooked in 3 ways & the “Last kiss” dessert where one had to eat it without utensils & a soundtrack (with earphones) was provided whilst eating it. All very novel & fun. A most enjoyable evening - food was stellar & the drama in the kitchen provided entertainment! Reservations are a must & totally recommend this experience when in Matera!

A mixed experience overall. Some dishes were interesting, but did not justify the price tag. Some dishes felt so basic that they shouldn't be on the menu (eg. Choco tower). There wasn't a single dish we were particularly impressed with from a flavor perspective or presentation perspective. Have had much better meals elsewhere with better food. Service was attentive throughout, however some descriptions of the dishes were rushed or lacking. The venue was in a cave which is neat, but def a tourist attraction and the only thing that made it interesting. The open kitchen was hidden from us and there wasn't any interaction from the chef.

Fantastic dining experience! Definitely worthy of one Michelin star. The setting was wonderful, in traditional Matera style cave. Dishes were beautifully presented, full of flavors and creativity. Service was faultless and we really felt welcomed. We did the shortest course (Heart, 6 courses) yet still very full. My friend is a vegeterian, and the restaurant had plenty of good options for her. Also they offered to adjust a couple dishes so I can also have non-vegetarian options as well (when you are doing tasting menu, everyone at the table must get the same dishes) , which was greatly appreciated. We got to meet Chef Lombardo briefly after the dinner and that was a very nice touch. Definitely worth a visit!

We visited Matera in early April and had dinner at this family ran trattoria. Typical trattoria with very simple interior. The food was amazing, kids loved their pasta. It was one of the best traditional pastas we had eaten in Basilicata and Puglia. The service, however, was not that great. The waitress wasn't friendly and we didn't really feel that warmth and hospitality we experienced throughout our visit in the region. Wouldn't come back because of this.

I would say that this place is nothing less than exquisite. The food was extremely good and coming from someone who is from India. I can vouch for the meatballs, some of the best that i have ever had in my life. The service was also courteous and the prices are also very reasonable. We however had to wait half an hour to get into the restaurant on a Saturday, without a reservation :)

Stumbled upon this trattoria in Matera for a wonderful lunch. Unique traditional Materan dish was surprisingly tasty with well balanced flavors on different layers. The cavetelli was cooked al dente with just right amount of tomato and sauces without overpowering. Delightful chocolate souffle to finish our meal. Fantastic experience.

Best dining in Matera! We came in on a week day because during weekends we couldn’t find a seat. We noticed the restaurant was exceptional already from the “Matera bread” which is the best we tasted in Matera. Not to mention the Cavatelli! Big compliments to the smiling Paolo, our waiter for the dinner. Highly recommended!

One of the best restaurants in town according to the local people at my hotel. I gave it a try and try it is definitely a place to be. Good food good vibes. It was a bit crowded and we had to make the reservation in advance. Otherwise people wait like 20-30 minutes to get a table in the peak time. We tried pasta and steak with wine. Everything is extraordinary with a reasonable price. Staffs are very friendly. Thumb up!

Place that I read about on a blog because of Mel Gibsons fettuccine. I did order different pasta and it was best one I ate in Matera. You could feel it was freshly made, not reheated. You get your moneys worth in this place and staff is very welcoming. You also get small bread snack as a started

We asked for recommendation in our B&B and it was the first name she said. Not possible to make reservations and the opening time for diner is really short. We went on Thursday, we arrived soon after opening, we got a table and soon after it was full ! The food is really traditional from Italy and from the region. Everything is explained on the menu (also in English in case) and the staff was welcoming and helpful. I totally recommend this place in Matera (it s not in the Sassi but in the “new” town.
