Beautiful place, unique in the world. It looks going back in time. The architecture and the atmosphere of the place makes everything magic. You can find a lot of bed and breakfast where staying, but be ready to walk with the luggages. The town itself is small but nice. A guided tour is suggested to reach the best angles and to know where the movie sets have been placed. It could be also very romantic, if you come with the right person of course. You need the car or an organized tour to reach the place, but once you are here it is not needed. Highly recommended

Amazing and very interesting city (Sassi area). Upon our arrival we felt very medieval atmosphere even it was not so long ago when people really lived there. We visited Matera i n July. This I don't recommend, because it gets really hot.

Very unique experience, interresting architecture. While walking you can sometimes feel as if you are in a different century with all the old buildings. Lots of lovely small restaurants and art shops.

Great place to visit. Lots of stairs🪨 make sure you have water and proper shoes. The stairs are slippery. Running or Hiking shoes 👟with a good grip are recommended. Enjoy the restaurant on the way back up.🇮🇹☕🍹

Make sure you spend a day there and get lost in the maze of stairs that you will not find where you end up going, but you will surely get somewhere and amazed by the whole experience. I would suggest this is the place to overnight stay as you will be exhausted at the end of it.

Interesting to see how lives people till 1958...in caves...in the middle of stones.. Cute city ,not so warm beacouse in the high mountain... Infront of the city very famous caves...but nothing special and smells not good( Anyway recommended to go up and see this beautiful view. Enjoy your trip 👍

A very special experience. Spend at least two days here so you can enjoy the sunset and the sunrise over the Sassi. Walk around the streets, discover the caves, eat at the small restaurants and think about the evolution of human kind. It's all there!

Gorgeous stone town. Extremely busy even at the end of October. Thousands of people and hundreds of groups roam the streets so it’s rather difficult to enjoy the full beauty of the surroundings. Definitely visit but arm yourself with lots of patience. Easy to get to from Bari, via bus with two departures, at 7.30am and 4pm.

Magical place, wandering through the narrow streets of Sassi is something different. As soon as you enter the old city you feel like you just traveled in time. Getting lost in this city is nothing but pleasure. Also I recommend taking a hike up the hill opposing the city to get the best view.

This place is truly amazing and if you are in the area you definitely need to go for a visit.The atmosphere is brilliant and the place has multiple churches to discover.The view is really nice and you can also look at the caves from a distance If you want to see the caves you need to go from another way as its a bit far to walk from here.Plenty of restaurants to wat and have a drink.

A must visit UNESCO world heritage site! Did you know that the latest James Bond was filmed in Matera? The town has a very unique hierarchical architecture. It’s really fun to get lost in the alleys and discover the wonders there. It’s interesting to think so many people still live in Matera.

Incredible place to visit. The movie James Bond 007 No Time To Die brought us here. We didn't know this place existed until we saw the setting in the movie. We stayed in a cave room for 3 nights, and it was awesome. The locals are lovely and helpful. There are also fantastic restaurants in the area. I highly recommend a visit to this historic place.

Wow. Cannot describe what a beautiful place this is. Spent a few days here exploring it and still only saw about 60% of it. So many places to see and has some lovely bars and restaurants. The days flew by and you feel like it's not a real place.

Very beautiful place worth to visit and to walk around! However, entrance fees (5 EUR for adults) to enter some of the cave apartments but this is not a must from my perspective. Just enjoy the historical houses and lanes from the outside and the nice view on The Valley and caves on the opposite! 😊

Notable Town on the Mountain, one of the oldest that you can visit. The grottos are amazing, and the Town itself its breathtaking. People is very nice and food and wine are exquisitez.

It's a special place where you can see how it was a long time ago. Life in caves with animals... Sightseeing is amazing. A cozy small mini family museum inside of one of these houses full of old stuff met us a coolness. It was exactly needed because of 40*C outside.

Actual cave house. They have photos of the last people who lived here. Amazing use of space and resources they had. Simple living all the way up to 1969. Must see to believe. Great narrative in all languages.

It’s about an amazing experience! I ve been there three years ago! Sassi di Matera is not only one of the most remarkable “monuments/places” of UNESCO but also an breathtakingly stunning sightseeing! I do love this divine area and I’ll be back the sooner possible! It’s well worth visiting!!!

This is one of several (probably the most popular) Sassi houses converted into a small museum to present the history and way of living in Matera. Entry fee is around 5 Euros and imo totally worth it. The museum consists of 4 parts. First is the original cave dwelling house with household items, kitchen, furniture, place for live stock,...etc. Explanations are available in different languages on your mobile (ask the kind staff for wifi in order to have it). After that you move to next door cave where you can watch a short movie about Matera history. Third cave is an old Church and the forth one explains the water collection system. Count on around half an hour for entire visit

Very interesting to see the inside. We found the video shown in room 3 very informative and a great place escape a rainy day. €3 entry fee is very reasonable.

So informative, free English translation audio guide with ticket, beautiful views, documentary video, and multiple rooms including not just the house but also a church and an ice storage area! Great value for money and lots of fun entertainment for all ages.

Very good museum in fully equipped typical cave with presentation of real peasant life in old Matera. Wonderful guide and explanation of real life in those times.

Truly shows the unbelievable conditions in which people used to live in old Matera back then - highly recommended place to see when here. They also play a very good educational video.

It is very important to visit this museum in order to see what a real peasant dwelling was like. It is a certified dwelling where real peasants lived. And they had a student discount.

I consider this is a must visit sightseeing. It's need to buy entrance ticket. Interesting to know how people was living in the cave. They had a simple toilet (see photo).

Very interesting to see how did they used to live not long time ago. The ladies working in the museum are very friendly and helpful, probably the nicest we found in the whole trip. You need to enter at a given time and you can hear an explanation/ audio guide on your mobile.

An interesting although perhaps not very deep dive look into the home life of a typical cave dwelling family in Matera. The online audioguide is decent although the same text is also available on the wall mounted signs. Not having made a reservation, we we're booked into a group 35 minutes after we first stopped by. This gave us time to visit the Madonna di Idris cave church before coming back to Casa Grotta.

Interesting place. Basically it is a short movie about Matera history, so you should not expect to see some exhibitions apart from the old house itself. I would rather dedicate time for some cave house with preserved furniture.

Sensitively communicates some of the history of the Sassi using projections onto the walls of the rooms left to the foundation. The soundtrack is in Italian but English is available via a headset device (with Corona correct earpiece covers)

100% must do if you are interested about the history of the city. The movie is +/- 30 mins long which is not too demanding for your attention span. We highly recommend. There is also a room with a giant screen offering different tours of the city, which you can synchronise on your mobile with Google maps and then go for your own walk following their routes, which we found very useful.

I would highly recommend visiting this place. It is really interesting and informative and worth doing before you explore the Sassi.

A 25 minute video of the history of Matera and of the Sassi in particular, in an old cave house (bare of furniture). A very good first stop to give you a better idea of what you're seeing as you wander around Matera. Close to the Duomo, which is also worth a visit at the same time.

Casa Noha is an absolute must visit in the Sassi of Matera. An excellent way to learn about the history of the area through a well-done audio/video presentation.

My husband and I visited Matera as a day trip and didn’t have much time to learn about the history of the town and the people who lived there. We saw mention of the exhibit in our Lonely Planet guide and were so glad that we made the visit. The information in the video gave us a much deeper understanding of the sassi, the tragedy of many of the people that lived there and the work that’s happened in recent years to bring the sassi back to life. Really well done- we would highly recommend!

Our visit to Matera would not have been complete without a visit to this National Trust property recommended by our hotel. The property shows a series of beautifully curated films that tell the history of the town and its people. Highly recommended.

Located just outside of the Sassi di Matera, Palombaro lungo is an underground cistern, carved into the rock. It is located underneath the town square and is therefore very accessible. Guided tours are available and public toilets can be found only a few metres away.

This an impressive underground water cistern that's exactly what it says on the tin. The 10-12 minute walk inside is worth the 3€ (April 2023) asking price. There's no need for a guided tour unless you happen to be particularly interested in the topic.

Its not worth 5€. Its just a big carved well. Its not that big to be honest. Most attractions are cheaper and much better. If you rich, buy it. If you a student, its not worth it.

It's worth seeing knowing the history. There are also a lot of restaurants most of which seemed nice. We did a day trip to Matera and that time was kinda enough. It's a lot of walking if you want to explore.

Nice underground and cold. That is good they put a different color of lights to give effect of the Cave and to the water.

It just takes a few minutes to walk along the causeway and view the inside of this man made water cistern and marvel at what humans can do. Don’t forget to look up at the wells at street level and read the leaflet given to you at the door. Just a couple of euro and another interesting thing to do in your day in Matera. Closed 1-3pm

Its interesting to see, but it isn't a must. If you have time, go. You have to pay to enter, but there isn't much to do or see there. You just go down the stairs look around a little...Turn around and go back in the same way.

Definitely worth a visit - entry fee €3. Located just under the main square in Matera - Piazza Vittorio Veneto. This massive cistern once provided the water for the city in the summer. Could hold 5m litres of water and is 14m deep. You can see the holes in the roof where residents lowered buckets down from the square to access the water. In 1991 when a decision was to open it to the public, scuba divers went in first as it was still full with water. No advance booking possible - just turn up.

Palombari are huge public cisterns that collected spring water for drinking. Apart from them, people dug their own smaller cisterns for private use for themselves and the live stock which lived with them. Palombaro Lungo was the biggest public cistern active from 16c and enlarged over the centuries. It had a capacity of 5 million liters with a depth of 16 and length of 50 met. The shape is irregular which is a result of digging and joining together several small cisterns around. The cistern walls were sealed with a water proof plaster. People collected water with with aluminum buckets through a well which was on the square, which doesn't exist any more. It was destroyed in 1927 when a national aqueduct was built. However, you can see the mouth of well from the cistern interior. The Palombaro cistern was rediscovered in 1991 during public works on the square. It's located on the main square of Matera. Entry fee is low, 3 Euros, and will consume around 15 min of your time

Pretty inexpensive at € 3 entry, only need about 15 minutes though to see. Amazing what can be beneath our feet, just out of sight!

We visited Palombaro Lungo in Matera, paying a few euros per person. Upon entering, we descended numerous steps with open backs, starting from a considerable height. For those uncomfortable with such steps or heights, beware. However, the descent offered little in terms of sightseeing. Like many other attractions in Matera, it felt more like a money-making venture than an engaging experience. Exploring the city's architecture outside proved far more enjoyable. Overall, our visit felt like a brief, unexciting detour, lasting no more than five minutes.

A twofold experience: the site is undisputably stunning. The paintings are unique, and well restored. Our guide was kind and friendly, he is not to blame for a slightly underwhelmed feeling after the visit. But, the whole procedure is annoying, starting from the 'no foto' policy, to the fact that you have to wait in a room of overpriced tourist stuff for half an hour before being allowed into the crypt for 15 minutes, of course seated and with a kitschy Audioguide. By the way, selling prints on gypsum slabs as "oil painting on tufo" is borderline fraud.

I do totally agree with all the reviews it certainly is unique. I took a bus tour from Matera to see this and when we got there, l assumed it was owned by the people who had the vines near by. It is a bit dangerous to access partically with no lighting just a torch held by just one man at the entrance. I was also fascinated by the disused rail bridge which overwhelmed the caves but no one could understand my questions in English. I was a bit p****d that you couldn’t take photos because of the flash but at the end the man with the torch used a remote to open up a curtain that covered perhaps the old entrance which was blocked up with Besser bricks.

Awful person working there, not friendly and cheating on a small things.. Shame for Italian culture to have such a person serving historical place.

Wouldn’t recommend it unless ur spending a lot of time in puglia.. the crypt is tiny (20sqm), and the place is far away from Matera (20mins car drive). Go to the Chiesas in the actual town.

It was much better than I thought - the presentation is quite impressive even though I would expected to be more dynamic. Drop by the vineyard next to it to get a bottle of wine with the pictures inside the cave. That wine is almost divine.

Totally recommend checking this out. Unfortunately, the English audio guide was very unreliable, interrupting and lagging behind the Italian one.

This place is amazing. A bit out of the standard touristic routes, it is absolutely worth the trip. The visit is really well organized, with lights and sounds perfectly set. Really touching! And do not forget to stop on the way back for a wine tasting at the place where you get the ticket. I really reccomend it.

Visit a place where time forgot! Matera is a truly stunning town. You could easily spend two or three days here just walking the streets and National Park. The transition from the old town into the park is amazing and the views are simply breathtaking. Traversing the suspension bridge into the park leaves you feeling like your walking next to dinosaurs. Climbing the steep walk to the opposite side is well worth it but take plenty of water and some really good walking shoes/boots. Trainers aren’t really going to do the job. You are surrounded in history and magical culture with loads of beautiful places to eat and drink.

Beautiful park with amazing views of the city of Matera. Caves around every corner with so much to explore and find. Very cool to see the ancient dwellings and get a sense of life there. A word of warning, the caves themselves are filthy on the inside due to ignorant tourists using them as bathrooms and leaving tissues everywhere! If you go, be prepared to use nature as your bathroom but do NOT leave tissues after yourself! Have some respect for others who wish to enjoy the park!

Great views, history and scenery shame people have used every cave as a toilet. Main problem is tissues left behind so caves need a clean. Please leave no trace.

We drove but the visitor site was closed. We parked anyway then walked. Accessible parking area closer to viewing area. Amazing to think people lived in the small caves. Beautiful view of historic Matera from the top. You can also hike there from Matera but looks grueling. Down then up, then same when going back. People were huffing and puffing.

A visit of this park is a must for any turist who wants more from such an impressive site. The views and the small houses and churches carved in stone are equal to the ones from the old part of the town.

The Matera Cathedral standing atop the Barisano di Matera village dominates the panorama. It's a 13c Romanesque Cathedral with, as it seems, recently renovated facade. While the exterior is pretty average, interiors are amazing - terrific Baroque marble, golden leaf and frescoes decorations. There's an entry fee which includes a small museum and a crypt

Beautiful church, if you enjoying the art ad architecture you will enjoy this church. There are also some great views outside, just mind the beggars and vendors (that will follow you).

Very ornate with several very well kept paintings. Do not miss the ceiling! Very old, but the paintings very clear and photograph well. Also, hidden to side of High Altar is a very large and ornate nativity scene. Very Large and detailed. In front of the main doors, do not miss the Vista off the ledge-portico. Early morning and late night photograph s very well.

This Duomo is incredible The inside design and all the drawings are impressive. The view from the view point in front of the Cathedral is also stunning

Beautiful cathedral, definitely worth visiting + a nice shelter during the heat. !!! Be aware of the ticket lady trying to scam you by making you to pay for two people instead of one !!! I was alone and she made me to pay 7 EUR, after me there were 4 people entering and they paid only 14 EUR. When I asked her why is it so, she said: oh, I’m sorry I thought you said two and not one. Heck yeah, I’m standing alone in front of you and buy tickets for two, seriously?!

Worth the walking and the 1 Euro per person to visit the beautiful ornated interior. The history is full of significance of the role the church had among the people.

The church is spectacular from the outside. However, inside is not well preserved and very small... It costs €3.50 for a visit of a few minutes. I recommend visiting the square and seeing the view, but unless you have a particular interest not going inside- the best part of the church is its exterior.

Our visit to the Church of Santa Maria Di Idris in Matera left us feeling underwhelmed. Despite the 4 euros per person entrance fee, the remains of what is inside—the religious artwork, frescoes, paintings, and altar—WERE NOT enough to justify the cost. It really felt like a WASTE of money, and unfortunately, the individuals collecting the fee seemed somewhat ignorant to American visitors. (and no it was not a language barrier) HOWEVER, the basic structure and the height at which it sits will have you wondering how such a feat of creation was achieved. The journey to the top and around it is a reward reaped in amazingly captivating scenery.(which is why 3 stars) It's the kind of view that makes you stop and reassess your understanding of architectural marvels. The views from the back of the church are particularly stunning, further enhanced by the presence of a few friendly roaming cats. If you're considering a visit, I recommend skipping the fee and enjoying the free views from the outside. You're not missing out on much unless you're a historian seeking specific details.

It's an amazing historical space but what little information there is, is in Italian. The lack of information really limited the experience. You'll have to do your homework ahead of time to really enjoy it. Or you can buy a publication at the site.

We didn't go in so not sure what it's like inside. However, you get great views of Matera and the surrounding valley on the walk up to the Church and from the Church itself.

Church Santa Maria de Idris is located on top of a small hill, carved into a rock, with spectacular outside appearance. The interiors are small, only two rooms with medieval semi preserved frescoes - no photos. It's included in the Combo Church pass

Church of Saint Mary of Idris was built between the 14th and 15th centuries. The facade, made of tuff in the 15th century, was rebuilt following a collapse occurred in the same century. It is a rock church, the name Idris derives from the Greek Odigitria , the one who shows the way. In Constantinople the Virgin Mary was so called and venerated, whose cult was introduced in southern Italy by the Byzantine monks. Taking photo inside is forbidden, and I will never forget those Orthodox frescoes with similar faith as rock churches in Cappadocia that were turned into museums or hotels...

The church overlooks the ancient village of Matera. The Sunday morning church bells are blessed… magnificent town to visit…

nice view from the area around the outside of the church. inside (ticket required) is nothing special as most of the fresco's have been removed or are damaged to the point where a photo is required to discern what's depicted. notable fresco's include a byzantine black jesus and st nicholas (yes, that st. nicholas).it is a cool respite in the heat, otherwise unremarkable compared to other churches in the area.

Church of Saint Mary of Idris is located in Matera , inside the Sassi - a rock church (carved into the rock). The location offers a unique view of the city. The church of dates back to the fifteenth century and is part of a rock complex that also includes the oldest crypt, dedicated to San Giovanni in Monterrone. We enjoyed our time here 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸

It’s a very special and quite unique place, however, avoid to visit while groups are inside we had a bad experience with one of the external guides that was asking us (in a rude way) to move all the time to have the full area for his group.

The curch in itself is fascinating and next to it there is an amazing belvedre. You do have to buy a ticket but if you buy a ticket for all 3 churches the orice is only 8 euros. It is quite small but like i said interesting. Definitely nothing like a church you are used to seeing.

To get a good look of the interior of the rock churches, which Matera is famous for, you have the option to buy a single ticket for 4 euro or a combined ticket of 3 churches for 8 euros. The two-ticket option at 7 euro makes no sense. If you want just pick one from the three, this will be my choice. It may not be an obvious choice. Madonna de Idris and San Giovanni is the more famous one among the three. But in fact if what you want is to see the interior and understand better of the rock church history, then Saint Lucia and Malve is special. First it is the oldest in Matera- tracing back to the 9the century! The frescos inside ranging from 11th to 16th century and you can see clearly the Byzantine influences. The church is small but the frescos are more numerous and well preserved. Also here you can see clearly the structural changes happened over time. It was converted into a house during the overpopulation and poverty-stricken “dark age” of Matera. Part of the church was modified for this for two families to live in. The front part was converted to a kitchen and restored back. This gives you a visual history of the rise and fall and the reemergence of Matera. Madonna de Idris is magnificent from outside and occupy a great location. You can simply visit it and take photos outside the church if time or budget is a concern. San Pietro has a very interesting crypt. It is really worthy 8 euro to get all three but if only picking one, Santa Lucia and Malve will be my choice. P.S. recommend to visit Casa Noha first and watch its well-made documentary film before visiting the rock churches.

Amazing! Don’t miss it if you like history and art. You can’t take pics inside. A church dating back to 8th Century. Inside you can see some frescoes from the 13th century onwards. There is an interesting one of the Virgin breastfeeding.

Definitely you must visit one of the rock churches during you visit to Matera. €4 entrance though you can get discounted tickets to visit 2 or 3 churches. Church used from 9th century AD. High mass is still celebrated annually on 13th December. Apparently part of this church was used as a family dwelling until 1960! Wonderful frescoes from 11th to 17th centuries - sad to see them fading as the years go by. Interesting that there was no insistence on women covering shoulders (ie modest dress) that you have in other churches around Italy. No photos inside church.

Late January, 2020. €3.50 one site, two €6.00, three €7. Got such tiny places, I think the price is too high. Can see magnificent cathedrals in northern Italy for free or a donation.

Of 3 medieval churches we visited this one had the nicest frescoes. In 2018 it costs 3€ to visit only one, 5€ for 2 or 6€ for 3 churches ( the last one is a bit further away and harder to find). After visiting all 3 I would say one would suffice. They are not so much different.

Visit a place where time forgot! Matera is a truly stunning town. You could easily spend two or three days here just walking the streets and National Park. The transition from the old town into the park is amazing and the views are simply breathtaking. Traversing the suspension bridge into the park leaves you feeling like your walking next to dinosaurs. Climbing the steep walk to the opposite side is well worth it but take plenty of water and some really good walking shoes/boots. Trainers aren’t really going to do the job. You are surrounded in history and magical culture with loads of beautiful places to eat and drink.

Beautiful park with amazing views of the city of Matera. Caves around every corner with so much to explore and find. Very cool to see the ancient dwellings and get a sense of life there. A word of warning, the caves themselves are filthy on the inside due to ignorant tourists using them as bathrooms and leaving tissues everywhere! If you go, be prepared to use nature as your bathroom but do NOT leave tissues after yourself! Have some respect for others who wish to enjoy the park!

We drove but the visitor site was closed. We parked anyway then walked. Accessible parking area closer to viewing area. Amazing to think people lived in the small caves. Beautiful view of historic Matera from the top. You can also hike there from Matera but looks grueling. Down then up, then same when going back. People were huffing and puffing.

A visit of this park is a must for any turist who wants more from such an impressive site. The views and the small houses and churches carved in stone are equal to the ones from the old part of the town.

We couldn’t believe how much was shown in this museum (and for only €4!), especially compared to the #1 most popular museum in Matera… you could spend a long time here just looking at all the artifacts and photos. My kids liked it, so it was not an absolute waste of time.

The museum creator, Donato Cascione also brings to our memory the "invisible" jobs - mostly those od Materan women. No one is forgotten, no one left behind. I bow my head in respect and appreciation for Donato, who not only assembled the objects and put them in fascinating order but also beautifully described the life od Materans - especially with the short poems - Dieci chiodi e piu - made me very, very emotional. After 1,5 hrs visiting this museum I felt touched emotionally. I was told the story of poverty and hardship, of life, love and joy and dignity - everything. It was a great starting point for our 2.5 hours of exploring the steep, windy streets of this ancient part of Matera. This was the biggest of the 3 rock churches we visited in Matera. It was more complex and had catacombs as a bonus.
