Jane Austin tomb inside just after the entry on the left. Amazing how massive the cathedral is and how intricate the detailing is. Lots of tour guides on hand to answer any questions - They were super nice. If in Winchester suggest you visit.

Went last minute and arrived around 4.30pm. Closed 6pm in the week. Used local car park, inexpensive only had to pay to 6pm. Circa 40 to 50 stalls I'd guess, friendly lovely atmosphere. Plenty of food and drink options in the centre and lots of toilet options. Lovely pre Christmas experience. Thoroughly enjoyed, even non shopper me 🤣

Oh my goodness! Do yourself a favor and visit the Winchester cathedral! It cost £12.50 to visit but was so worth it! We had a wonderful tour guide (which is included in the cost of admission) and I highly recommend the tours! So informative and they can only scratch on the history of the cathedral. Very cool to see Jane Austen’s burial site. Definitely check out the crypt if it isn’t flooded (which it may be seasonally but we lucked out in January). Also worth visiting the complimentary Exhibit which houses the Winchester Bible and Bishop’s library. Very wonderful experience.

Such a brilliant place to visit. When we reached service was going on and we had free entry inside the cathedral. The choir was fantabulous - enjoyed it. The cathedral itself is a very historical building located close to the town and an architectural marvel. Worth visit. Lots of parking available around the town.

Winchester Cathedral at the heart of Winchester City is a historical but also a very stunning building impossingly stunning the city visitors. The staffs and really amazing in here. They're very welcoming and there are plenty of very lovely volunteers providing guided tours. They also provide activities leaflets for children and their ticket last a whole year so you can go back there on the same ticket all year round. Cannot recommend it enough

My first impressions of Winchester cathedral are just how impressive and absolutely stunning it is. You don't need to know the history of the cathedral to appreciate the design and architecture of this cathedral. I went there 3 days in a row and every day I noticed different parts that I had previously missed. The entrance fee of £10 also acts as a 12 month pass to visit as many times as you like, outstanding value for money. There are also free tours of the cathedral at various times which is very informative. I will definitely be going back several more times over the next 12 months.

We did the guided tower tour at an extra GBP3 and it was well worth it. So much information, a great view from the top and the chance to see behind the scenes. Lots of very narrow stairs though so not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. And take a small bag if at all.

It's a great place to explore the great history of Winchester. It's really a big church with beautiful art and historic monuments. There is a small garden in front of it and you can spend quality time with your family and friends.

Didn't pay for entry We felt £12.50 was quite a lot for entry and decided not to pay, but we did soon realise how big it was and could see potential justification for why entry was expensive. You can explore a garden and see lots of the architecture without going in. The gift shop is expensive and mostly about the area not just the Cathedral.

What a gorgeous historical place to have a graduation. So we'll organised in a wonderful venue & City. Lovely and Warm we were nice and comfortable during the 90 minutes ceremony. Perfect memories made today in a gorgeous historic building.

This is a must-see place if you are visiting Winchester, the cathedral is fantastic for those that love this type of building. We did the standard cathedral tour including the crypt, our guide was a lovely lady called Angela and she was so good with children and adults and so informative. Two of us then did the Tower Tour, this was amazing and well worth the fee.

Fascinating history and stories around the building. Would thoroughly recommend the guided tour. We also enjoyed the Tower tour, but not for the faint hearted, have a heart or lung problem or you don't like narrow steps or heights. You need at least three full days to get the most out of a visit here. One ticket lasts a full year so your return is feasible. Another exhibit we enjoyed was The Kings and Scribes. Extremely interesting history.

I was incredibly impressed by Winchester cathedral and it is 100% worth the £10 entry. Upon entry we were told a free guided tour would start soon - you should definitely partake in this. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and witty. He took us around the whole cathedral and told us stories and facts about the cathedral, its history, the royals and of Winchester itself. Thank you for having these tours as it really sets the visit apart. The cathedral is stunning architecturally and you can see the different styles as you move throughout the cathedral. There was also an exhibit on which added even more value to the ticket. I would certainly visit again even though it's a 2 hour drive. This is by far the best thing to do in Winchester. The only reason it got 4 stars is because of the toilets - water and mud all over the floor and it smelt like the sanitary bins needed changing.

Wow, what a cathedral. Anyone who is in the vicinity must see it. We were also lucky enough to see the choir rehearsing and we were accompanied by church songs through the huge building. If you are interested in history, you should bring time, as there is a lot to read and learn.

Magnificent bit of architecture, a wonderful cathedral set in the historical town of Winchester. £12.50 for an adult, kids are free. A bit of a museum, art gallery, and tower tours. Gift shop and cafe are in a separate building across the courtyard.

Remarkable building, with fantastic exhibitions and guides, well worth the price of entry and definitely worth checking out. The building remains a functioning church, but in addition it acts as a museum and art gallery. Definitely worth getting the guided tour, and make sure you check out the actual museum section (off to the right hand side towards the back of the church).

The cathedral has been on my bucket list for years. It was great. I did the tour, which made it so much more interesting. It's definitely a must.

Amazing place to visit, so much to see and learn about. The Moon was just incredible and seemed so real. Also wonderful to see the Bible dating back over a thousand years. Really helpful, kind staff. The crypt was brilliant. The architecture was just mingling. Your ticket lasts 12 months so you can visit as much as you want for the year.

I took the Tower Tour. 213 extremly narrow, steep, and uneven stairs to the top. A great view when you get there, especially if you get lucky with the weather. The decent to Ringing Floor (Britain's largest apparently) is probably slightly more challenging (down those same stairs). I have given this tour 5 stars because the guides are excellent and I enjoyed it very much but do be aware that this is not your ordinary climb (and the number of steps is not really the issue)

Incredible building with so much history. Your ticket allows you entry for a full year. Highly recommend the free guided tours from the volunteers, they are very knowledgeable and passionate. Always visit this cathedral whenever I'm in Winchester.

Superb & impressive 1000+ year old Cathedral in the center of Winchester. Known to be one of the earliest stone built buildings in the whole of England & Europe. Also there is a museum inside over 3 floors. You can get a free guided tour which is included in the entrance fee. Definitely the best place to visit in Winchester by a hell of a lot, and definitely one of the best cathedrals in the country. The history is incomparable and it's a perfect example of cathedral architecture through time, with everything from Romanesque to Perpendicular Gothic, and modern additions. When I visited it was school holidays, a little bit grey but with blue skies later, and not busy at all (I got pictures from one end to the other without any people in, very rare, even at around 11-12ish). The nave roof is stunning, very similar to that at Norwich, and the west window is like a mosaic of old glass that although isn't perhaps as impressive as others gives off a beautifully clear light and reminds me of the Dean's Eye at Lincoln. The transepts and the crypt are the oldest parts of the building, in their Norman big-bonedness. The crypt was flooded when I was there which I had been desperately hoping for (although it's probably not the best thing for the cathedral building) - it is amazing. I tried to take a (very cautious) step down from the top step of the main viewing platform and realised I couldn't because the water was only just lower than it - it was very high. But it's beautiful - the statue is reflected perfectly. I'd love to see it unflooded as well and take the crypt tour around to the other side. The choir is lovely under the crossing, another beautiful ceiling with a helpful mirror to look up. I couldn't see any miserichords but I'm sure there were some - I did find a little finial with a funny looking guy on it who was pretty cool. The roof screen is one of the highlights - every little niche has it's own carved vault, many statues all life sized and with tiny details you can't even make out, and so many other little touches that make it an absolute masterpiece of Mediaeval and Victorian craftsmanship. The area behind is closed off but you can get around into the retrochoir with the tomb of St. Swithin which is lovely and some gorgeous chapels with lovely ceilings. There's a little section of ceiling between the end of the aisles and the retrochoir's first arch where it goes diagonal and the vault becomes really strange and wonky which I adore - a very inelegant solution to a problem that's created a beautiful little detail. Another highlight was the Kings & Scribes exhibition - it's great to get up into the triforium without a tour. The bottom floor has the Winchester Bible which is very beautiful, the video explaining how they made it is probably not the best for some people (like vegans - it's written on calfskins) but is very interesting. There's a lot of effort put in there. Upstairs you can go inside the library where you can look, on a screen, inside some of the manuscripts, which have some graffiti and other cool little things. There's also a really interesting bit about the mortuary chests where they found the bones of ancient kings, and how they figured out who they are - they're unsure but they've put in a hell of a lot of effort - I watched most of the video on display which was interesting, and loved the interactive screens that went through the science of it. On the top floor there's windows through into the nave aisles' rooves, which are very dark but cool to see, a large balcony over the transept which offers stunning views of the crossing, an exhibition about the building of the cathedral, and another exhibition about the monks' lives which was also good. Loved the bit about the cathedral, and the views too. The café and shop are also very good - had a lovely panini, good loos. here's also a statue outside the café of the diver who saved the cathedral - very much worth a read, and there's a pub named after him nearby. It's also worth going along the south side because you walk through the buttresses along the wall which makes for great pictures, especially in the golden hour. So, I highly recommend a visit to Winchester Cathedral. It's simply wonderful. I'll have to come back to take a crypt tour, and the tower tour which I didn't take because I did one at Salisbury.

Fantastic family day out. I took my 11 year old and 2 year old. We booked online,under 3s are free. Easy to get around and there is a lovely little train. We went and it started to rain so the train ride came in handy it cost 2 pound per person no charge for my 2 year old. Plenty of toilets and places to eat. Gorgeous animals to see we were lucky enough to watch the red panda playing in the tree and say some gorgeous birds in the open aviary and there is some lovely garden areas and the manor is absolutely gorgeous.

Always a pleasure to go to Marwell although I feel there is too much wire fencing and some animals still don't have enough space. I am not sure how I feel about some of the larger animals being held in such small areas. I understand however that they are well cared for.

Wonderful zoo, the animals are well looked after, staff are all great and care for the animals and their jobs. Lots of walking paths and places to explore, stopping points and food outlets. Number of play parks en route. It’s about 3 miles total walking distance around the outer perimeter. Very clean and tidy. As with any zoo, the big cats and primates can’t have as much space to roam and play as they would in an ideal world but they are safe. We went on the weekend when it’s very busy and in the week as well, during the week is far better and less crowded. The zoo relies on donations, paying customers and ticket entry - it’s all going to a valuable cause.

First time visiting, came here after recommended by friends. Had a lovely day out, despite the rain, lots of animals to see including penguins 🐧, Monkeys 🐒, Red Pandas 🐼, snow leopard 🐆 and many more. There was no queues to get into the park and loads is parking available. Animals can be seen clearly, through glass and enclosures, so young children to adults can enjoy the experience. This is an Ideal day out for anyone, babies, children, on your own, couples, elderly, wheelchair users, as there is slopes to make the park more accessible. There is a lot of land and a fair bit of walking to do around the zoo, so bear that in mind, however, there are benches and seats all around. Had lunch in cafe Graze, it's quite small, but plenty of choices of food, from cookies, cakes and muffins, to chip, jacket potatoes or lasagne. There is probably only 10 tables inside the cafe, but there is a large outdoor dining area. All the staff are very friendly from the man who sold me my ticket at the entrance, to the lady who served me in the cafe and wished me a happy new year, to the gentleman who answered my questions in the tropical enclosure. Would definitely go again one day, but not for a while. If your looking to go often, you can upgrade your day ticket to an annual membership. The only thing, I felt let the zoo down, was the lack of toilets.

A little small zoo. Still a nice few hours with the kids. Get there on good time and walk around slowly.. when it's not to hot animals are always pm display and very visible to see. Unfortunately, this weekend it was so hot, think they all had enough. Always a good little place to go though. Nice gift shop. Toilets pretty clean. Nice picnic area but food is available.

Wonderful zoo. Spread over a lovely country estate. The owners have obviously given great thought to the enclosures and most are huge, bigger than many other zoos. I did some reviews that you don't get to see the animals. This is easily resolved here as most enclosures have more than one viewing point and we went back to some enclosures again on our way out and saw the ones who were asleep etc on our first try. Remember these are living creatures with a routine of their own not "performers" in our "play"

Fantastic day out for families. I had not been in 30 years and I have to say that some of the place looked a bit tired and some of the old enclosures have been left to rot but what they do have is a fantastic range of very healthy looking animals. The range of animals from Tigers to monkeys, birds and a big hit if a red panda, is just right and the ability to see the animals as you walk around is just right. It's a good few hours of walking with a land train that lets you see the whole thing of you want. There are lots of picnic spots, and play parks dotted around. Kids that normally moan after a few hours were well entertained.

We went on a Saturday. We bought our tickets online and saved waiting at the entrance. The park is clean, there are plenty of areas for children to play and restaurants with a good price but with a very good quality. We saw a lot of animals although there were some areas without animals. The organisation is very good and you can do the tour in one day very comfortably. There are no shows or at least we didn't see anything to see how they are fed or an explanation of their lives. Highly recommended and very good to go with children.

I have visited Marwell Zoo many times over the last 15+ years and have always enjoyed my time here. They have a large selection of animals and have upgraded enclosures and added new ones over the last few years. The Tropical House and the aviary are currently closed due to the avian flu so you won't be able to see the birds that fly here or the sloths. The restaurant serves lovely food with large portions, although on pricey as to be expected at these types of attractions. The staff are always polite and helpful and the zoo keepers take great care of the animals. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in wildlife.

Absolutely blown away with the place! Managed to get some beautiful photos of the animals there, abd we were pleased to see that they are so well cared for. You can really see that the keepers are trying their best to make each animals enclosure as close to their natural habitat as possible. Lots of open spaces and walking around which was nice, and lots of different variety of parks for the children. I would definitely recommend this as a place to visit if you are in the vicinity, or for a day out as we did from the Isle of Wight. Beautiful place and a great attraction. We liked that the price was so good also!

Lovely day spent at Marwell Zoo, weekday and out of school holidays so other than a group of small school kids it was wonderfully quiet. Great facilities with friendly staff and volunteers throughout the park. Loads of animals to see all in spacious enclosures allowing them to roam as free as possible with excellent viewing opportunities. Ticket prices are very reasonable and there is plenty of free parking. We took a picnic but the food places and food on offer looked pretty good. We did grab a latte, which despite being machine made, was great. There were plenty of picnic areas/tables dotted around the park for those who had brought their own food. Gift shop by the entrance/exit was full of the usual gifts and masses of cuddly toys…the prices weren’t crazy which is a bonus! All in all a great day out, highly recommended…

Always great fun for everyone. Will disagree with previous reviews that there was no animals. We managed to see most of them. We actually had a nice meal in the zoo canteen. To compare to another this to type of places ( mainly theme parks) food was very tasty and reasonably priced. Also, the ice cream by the playground was awesome. Clean toilets all around the park. Free parking.

Incredible, sunny day at the zoo. Started the journey and got on the M3. Clear signage to go to the place. Lots of parking spaces. Prices as shown in pictures, paid on the day (so not sure if its more affordable online). Great open spaces for the animals. Fairly clean throughout. Many kiosks, a restaurant and cafes. We enjoyed the day so much and took amazing photos. A place that I highly recommend for an entire day to have time to see as much.

4 wonderful hours spent here today, for what I believe was a very reasonable amount of money. All the animals looks happy & content in there large enclosures, never saw any pacing back & forth. Zoo was clean & tidy without litter lying around, toilet's plentiful & clean. Nice areas for children to play in. Will return. Highly recommend.

Marwell is my local wildlife park, I have been regularly going for most of my life because I support their breeding programs. I have given a lower rating this time because I was disappointed at how much the level of animal species has dropped in the time since my last visit in 2018 :-( I really hope that this is just a Covid impact and that they get back to their original standard soon.

I don't want to slag this place off because of the fantastic work they do. The staff were lovely. The animals were beautiful. It was just a bit average. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it.......... It was just a bit meh. I would not go again when it is cold.

Had a great day out here and there was something for everyone. My 3 year old daughter loved seeing the Giraffes up close and was excited to get up close and personal with the monkeys and see them get fed too. The staff were very knowledgable and friendly and were really keen to chat to us casually and explain some of the funny behaviours that the monkeys where displaying too! It was a great day overall and it's so important that places like Marwell not only exist, but thrive. Conservation is so important and its great to see so many endangered animals roam around happily in large, clean, interesting enclosures. It would be tragic if these creatures went extinct before my three year old reaches my age and so places like Marwell that focus on protecting and breeding these endangered animals are so crucial. :)

Nice zoo lots space clean enclosures nice to see some of animals close up they seemed well looked after! Friendly staff an enjoyable day lots walking! Cafe graze needed more staff service very slow food went cold waiting in queue 2 pay nobody clearing tables etc! Some undercover picnic areas so take picnic!

Season ticket holders for more years than I can count, it's a fantastic day out at all ages, my toddler loves it, my teenager loves it, we love it (40s) and the grandparents love it (70s). Beautiful site, ever evolving and always something new to see.

Went recently with the 30 day return ticket, had a wonderful time, been again and hoping to go again before our tickets expire. Friendly staff, clean facilities and areas to eat your own food or buy from the eateries. I hadn't been there since I was a Child so nice to share this with my Son.

I haven't been to somewhere like a zoo since I was a kid, we thought with our kids interest in animals, where would be a great place to go for their first birthday that would keep them interested, a Zoo of course. It was a bit of a treat for the family and it's somewhat surprising how you can wonder round and lose the best part of a day. There's a gift/coffee shop near the entrance which means you can get yourself a little something before you start your adventure, you can download an app to your phone to know what to look for when going round and I genuinely enjoyed it. There is a main eatery about half way round, which we mainly stopped at as feeing time for the child - the warning here if you are not a parent (or maybe if you are too) it does get really busy here and you have to leave buggies outside, which got surprisingly chaotic, because kids all need feeding at the same time. On the far side of the zoo there's like a little ice cream/coffee shop/loos which is OK to watch zebras from. I think the big lesson here is to always look for nicer/warmer weather. One of the things we wanted to see and thought our child would love was the big cats, like small cats they tend to sleep in the warm indoors on cold days so aren't roaming about, which meant we didn't see any. Overall a pretty reasonable day out, not too expensive either, next time we visit will definitely be in the warmer weather though!

Enjoyed a lot, a small place filled with history. You can dress in some clothes to make nice photos. But the place itself is very interesting to investigate. This huge wooden plate/shield with King Arthur is endearing.

Surprisingly good - more than I expected by quite a lot. It's basically only the one room, with a little exhibition to one side and a small garden, but it's very much impressive. The round table is of course very cool, but the stained glass is all at visible level and great to look at, plus there's the wedding gates which are incredibly detailed, the stunning statue of Queen Victoria, the brass of the late Queen, and lots of information boards about the history of the place. The price is now £8pp and includes the Westgate Museum which is small but interesting - you can't get in for £4 anymore. We went assuming it would be £4 but in the end were glad we payed to look around properly. The little exhibition isn't bad either, although it's mainly just pictures and things to read on walls in a corridor.

Part of Winchester Castle, long since destroyed, the Great Hall survives. Winchester was the capital of England in the early days, and this history is explained. The round table is an obvious draw, it is really old ..circa 1250 ?but nothing to do the King Arthur, who didn't exist. Well worth the small admission fee, plenty to take on board. Children and older people like myself can dress in medieval clothing.

Not as impressive or interesting of a place as I'd hoped. There is some historical information with some of it interesting some of it not. The hall is nice to see, but that's about it for what this attraction has to offer. It is very suitable for children. I wouldn't recommend it to someone with limited time in Winchester, but it isn't bad either.

I’m here as part of the build team for Rabble Theatre’s Henry I. What a privilege. The building is absolutely immaculate, with 3/4 of a millennium’s worth of history - including ‘that’ round table. Thoroughly recommend going out of your way to visit this amazing part of our history!

The Great Hall in Winchester had a rich history mixing facts, Royal visits and connections with myth and King Arthur's round table, made for a royal wedding. It is worth a visit and has a pleasant side garden.

What an interesting place. Atmospheric and so high! I've waited a long time to visit and it was amazing. Amazingly accommodating staff. Let me into a side door to use the lift to the long gallery and gift shop. Very friendly girl on the till, and lovely lady in the gift shop. Beautiful garden, small but smelt so amazing with the lavender and honeysuckle. The guide book has a lot of good photos and interesting facts. Cheap to enter at only £4 per adult, but that includes the peaceful garden. Guide books are £2 . Gift shop has a variety of things for all pockets.

The hall is in magnificent condition given its history. It would have made for a glorious courtroom, but today is a mostly empty space. The halls history is presented down the length of the long gallery on your way to the gift shop and exit. It's worth taking you time to browse its length.

£4 isn't a lot but it might be expensive or cheap depends on how you see it. Given the location and how easily accessible it is and the cost maintenance I would say the price is quite fair. More could be done to the garden during winter visit since it looks quite lonesome... You could spend minutes or hours in here depends on how much information you wanted to find out about the site and the history behind it. But it is a must if you are visiting Winchester as a tourist since you do get a feel of how far back this place's history is.

Takes you back to a time long gone. HISTORICAL and MAGICAL at the same time. Well worth a visit and a lot to see and read about. Decent value at £4 to help with the upkeep of our great history of this land. Recommended to all. Well enjoyed!

A wonderful piece of history, well worth preserving for generations to come. Definitely a must see for anyone visiting Winchester, whether for a day out or a vacation. Winchester as a city has so many fascinating and picturesque things to see, that a day is not enough.

A great place to visit if you are in the town. £4 to get in and have a look. Walk through the well priced gift shop to see the hall. It’s beautiful, especially the most amazing large steel doors at the end! See the king Arthur’s knights table. Walk into the beautiful small garden at the side. Doesn’t take long to see it and then you can walk out through the corridor which displays all the historical information. A great quick thing to do that won’t bore the kids.

This is an incredible historical building. Inside, there's the famous Round Table linked to King Arthur's legends, which is pretty impressive. The size of it seeing it hanging up on the wall is astounding. It really brings the legends to life when you see it in front of you. It's like stepping into a history book but cooler. You can almost hear stories of kings and important stuff that happened here. The stained glass with the names of the kings is amazing. The painted wall with names of those in parliament is awe inspiring. I also loved seeing the gates which were specially made for Diana's wedding with their initials carved on the top. If history's your thing, it's a gold mine. But even if history doesn't sound interesting to you, the Great Hall is stunning. The architecture is a mix of strength and elegance that's just beautiful. It's definitely worth the entry fee. Visiting here isn't just a regular visit to a museum. It's like getting a real feel for England's past. It's a chance to see, learn, and appreciate how amazing this country's history is.

Fascinating hall with a small garden housing king Arthur's round table. Would suggest you get a joint ticket along with the other museums as not much else to see, but worth a visit

Lovely old 13th-century building, rich history with only 2 buildings left standing since the 13th century. Lovely friendly staff with lots of knowledge about the rich history from back in the days. An impressive 13th century building with lots of history. At the end of the hall on the wall contains the round table of King Arthur legend. There are lots of information boards throughout to provide historical details of ones who were tried here (and often sent to be beheaded!) and also details about the building itself. The small garden outside looked very pretty at the time we visited (September) It cost us £4 each to get in which we thought was great value.

What a fantastic historic find! The signage could be improved a bit (they had the entrance sign facing the wrong door so we must’ve been funny to watch pushing on a door that wouldn’t open. It was changed after I kept trying! 😂) There we’re not enough employees to have an 11am guided tour on the day I went (so be mindful they might not run every day) but they had enough informational signs to make a self guided tour worth it. Worth the cost of admission.

A lovely places to visit - full of history and lots of information boards about to tell you all about it. Loved seeing the round table from the king Arthur story and reading the history behind. My favorite part was the wall full of the parliament members names and the queen Victoria statue.

I thought that there would be more to see, it's not that much to get in (£4 or £3.50 concessions) but 20-30 minutes would be plenty of time to read the info cards and look around. Shame the Westgate museum wasn't open.

Excellent day out with the kids, plenty to do and see. lots of stuff is hands on and very educational for both the kids and adults alike. The amenities are god couple of eating places and plenty of tables around upstairs and downstairs. The planetarium is absolutely brilliant well worth the visit, advisable to book in advance if going in peak time.

A great place to take your children for lots to see and do. The place is also very educational and the staff are super friendly and fun. It’s great to see the live science in action and how passionate the staff are when conducting it! They also have the planetarium which is really cool, you do have to pay a little extra If you want to see a show but we didn’t mind that. I definitely would recommend as there aren’t many places like it!!

Excellent interactive place for children to run around and explore all things science related. The car park can sometimes be busy at peak times, and can be busy during half term/school holidays. It’s almost always nearly empty at the later part of the day (2pm onwards) There is a cafe with a great selection of food and snacks, catered to adults and small children, (not too expensive) When the weather is nice there is also an outdoor section for children to explore. A great soft play which is included in the ticket price is also there too. The planetarium is not included in the ticket price, but can be purchased as an “add on”

Awesome concept and very well thought out. Only downside is that it was a little smaller than anticipated. We expected this trip to last most of the day, however it’s a half day outing at the very most. Would have been 5 stars if it wasn’t for the cheeky extra car parking charge that wasn’t needed, as admission charge was more than enough.

That was a great experience for both, adults and childrens especially when your little one loves everything about the planets.The access was quick but it’s better to book in advance, and recommend to include both shows planetarium and science one.They serve good food and plenty of space indoor and outdoor plus a soft play area for kids under 6 years old. The live experiments were very good and the kids enjoyed it.Natasha deserves a 10 for her knowledge and dedication.It was a great day out there.

This is an all-age attraction. Just outside Winchester it's in one building. Car park (small charge) is almost adjacent. Loads of hands -on experiments/gadgets for kids or adults to use. Plenty of seating. Dining is relaxed and there is outside seating on sunny days or if you bring a picnic. The Planetarium is an extension to the main building, very modern and the commentary is educational but enjoyable. There is also a small Theatre where experiments are demonstrated. Kids sit on mats and they really enjoyed it. Both the Planetarium and Theatre are optional separate charges. This is a wonderful day out, we were there for 5 hours and still didn't see everything and our children wanted to stay even longer. Can't give a better recommendation than that. School trips are catered for but we visited on a Sunday so it was fairly quiet.

What a fantastic day!! Visited with my husband and 6-year-old son. Stayed all day until the hoovers came out, and it was time to go lol. Lots and lots to so. I'm not sure why many are complaining about the price it's a full day out. I thought the pricing was fair! It is additional for the planetarium but so worth it. I was literally in ore of it. The lady presenting it Steph was brilliant too. Dino show was great, along with the science live shows. You book a slot for the dino show on arrival. Lots to see and do and everything in interactive. Soft play included to run off steam, lego building area, brick building area, dino excavation, and more. Cafe was super quick despite a limited menu but large portions. Jacket spud was huge! Came to £18 for a jacket, panini, x2 cokes, x1 crisps, and a jelly. Staff were all really pleasant and friendly. Toilets clean and displays. My only grumble is the car park charge - bit naughty but most attractions do it. P.S book 7 days in advance for a saving on tickets. Well done everyone at the science museum! Highly recommend!!

Staff very helpful and engaging. At first it may appear that there are limited things to do, but the more you look, the more you find. Lots of great interactive stations, kids wanted to go round again and again. Go with an open mind and you'll love it. Food may be limited in choice for some, but prepared well, very tasty and excellent value. Went with a 10 and 13 yr old - they loved it!

Great place to visit with two 9 year olds Went on a Sunday and spent pretty much the whole day here. There's some great "live science" demonstrations throughout the day which are great to watch and fun for everyone We also booked the musical science theatre where we had a great time watching flames dance and laser harps. The planetarium is also fantastic and well worth the extra few £. Good range of food options both bit and cold for vegans and veggies and once you're done you can even take a little walk along the south downs

We visited with our 1,5 year-old son and it was really nice, even for toddlers. He was allowed to touch everything, try out, rotate, pull, push... They even have a nice soft play. For us adults, the really cool part was the live science shows, done by real people doing real live experiments. It makes science so much fun. Way better than any video you could watch. The planetarium show was also really nice, because it presented the current sky over Winchester and was commented by a real person, rather than a film. All and all a really nice experience for curious minds, no matter their age.

An excellent day out with the grandchildren. 2 girls aged 5 and 8. They thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the exhibits. Plus all the live experiments and experts sharing a lot of information. The Planetarium is amazing. Very good value for money.

Absolutely lovely place to spend the day. 6 year old and I spent 6 hours there and really enjoyed the planetarium and all the hands on exhibits. The short science demonstrations were well done, and all the staff friendly and helpful. Cake in the cafe is definitely average. It was nice to have areas to eat a picnic inside and out.

Absolutely loved our visit, my son had visited before and wanted to go again for his 9th birthday. His little sisters are 6 and 7 and have ADHD and they were completely entertained. Lots of things to touch and experience which was perfect for my family. A highly recommended day out for a family of any age.

Nice clean place. Kids loved the different stations and the soft play area. They found the bubble show fun and informative. Overall nice bright fun place for the children. Plenty of parking although some people can't park properly and park so close!!

I decided to visit Winchester Science and Planetarium as my Son is obsessed with Science and Space and thought it will fill a day during the holidays where the weather forecast was ominous. The cost per adult £17.50 and child £17.50 does seem high and can be extremely costly if you have a few children, but does decrease if you book in advance bear in mind it's also £4 each for the Planetarium. I was a bit gutted when I saw that there was a charge of £3 for Car Parking whilst going through the payment, but I had already committed by then. The Car Park is quite small, but seemed to just cope with the demand which is fine, the grounds look well kept and beautiful. The facilities are very clean and modern and the staff were so polite and friendly. I was so pleasantly surprised with this place, there were so many stands for the children (and adults) to interact with and learn from that you just couldn't get bored. The Space section had arcade stands, a spacesuit photo stand, but my recollection would just not do this place justice. I would advise for you to bring a Picnic as the food and drink are expensive just like any other similar complex, there are many nice places to sit down and eat whilst being here. The Planetarium was amazing and I would suggest that if you live in the West side of London and are going to Greenwich just for their Planetarium, go to this one instead! Both my Son and I enjoyed this more. The lady (forgot her name) that narrated was so clear, fun and informative which heightened our experience. The Shop at the end was reasonably priced and had a lot to offer and my Son bought a cool space Pen 3D Picture of the Solar System. Overall after my visit I feel this is great value for money, the staff and owners should be proud of what they have delivered here and I personally would recommend this for anyone who is slightly curious of Science or just want a day out.

Visited today as a group of 7 for the first time. No wait to get in, easy to move freely around the centre and lots of friendly staff around to help if needed. The children loved being able to touch everything and see science in action. Ear defenders are available for anyone to borrow. Live science demos were just the right length of time to keep everyone interested, and the bubble trouble show was a great freebie! The gift shop is reasonable priced with loads of STEM toys available. Lovely outdoor picnic area with amazing views.

What a gem! When we arrived we had a lovely introduction by the staff, who explained all that was on offer. The room guide was so knowledgeable and pointed out loads of bits we would have missed. We loved the video of the otters! The wheel itself was brilliant, so great you can get so close to it and properly see it all working. The cafe was great, rose and cardamon shortbread!!!! And the garden was such a haven of peace! A great stocked book shop as well with such a good variety of books.

An interesting Mill, that is free to visit and look around, friendly staff and different things for kids to interact with. Central to the city centre and easy walking distance to the Cathedral and gardens.

A real hidden gem right in the middle of Winchester. When I visited the river was very, very high and the mill itself wasn't working, but standing in among the machinery with the water rushing through at alarmingly fast speeds was really atmospheric. The new(ish) island garden has some beautiful daffodils that are very much unlike any I've ever seen, and some lovely river views. Didn't go in the café but it looked lovely as well. Just a great little NT property that I really recommend.

What a charming place! Don't miss visiting it when you're in Winchester. Go downstairs to see water gushing through Mill at 25mph. There is a nice coffee shop and a book shop with many treasures

This is an interesting but small NT property. We were surprised that it was free entry. No more than 1 hour is required to see everything. There is a cafe onsite should you fancy a bite. No parking but many public carparks exist close by.

A wonderful piece of Winchester’s past, well worth preserving for generations to come. Definitely a must see for anyone visiting Winchester, whether for a day out or a vacation. Winchester as a city has so many fascinating and picturesque things to see, that a day is not enough.

Great little place to visit in Winchester. Mill wasn't in operation when we visited but the museum part is very interactive to illustrate how it does operate. Visiting the water wheel below the museum is superb. Staff were so friendly and informative, answering any questions we had. Cafe on site seemed very popular although we didn't try. Possibility of seeing otters too! Overall, would highly recommend.

Free to enter, although they have a suggested donation, so I was pleased to contribute to this wonderful old Mill, unfortunately the wheel wasn't working, it is very old & they are hoping to get enough donations to renew it, apart from that I was not disappointed, plenty of information & also a video of it's history through the ages, lovely café, although slightly over priced, but enjoyable nonetheless, friendly, approachable staff, lovely bookshop & small garden terrace, which they are slowly getting ready, but tables are available if you want to sit outside. I really enjoyed my visit.

This place is free to visit for adults and children but a tiny donation is welcomed as they are trying to restore an old mill. This was a very cool mill to visit, haven't quite seen anything like it. Definitely worth a quick visit here.

Beautiful historical mill. You can go downstairs to view the water up close and walk across. It is breathtaking. Upstairs the cafe and gift shop are well managed and the staff are very friendly. Pretty impressed with how it is being looked after.

Very interesting place in Winchester. Shame there's no waterwheel at the moment so no milling and no flour available. They are raising money to get a new one. The water that rushes under the mill is very fast and would produce a lot of power. There is a video to watch about the history of the mill. There is also a café and second hand book shop.

The statue of King Alfred the Great, which stands at the eastern end of The Broadway, close to the site of the city's medieval East Gate. The statue of a suitably heroic Alfred was designed by Hamo Thornycroft, R.A., and erected in 1899 to mark one thousand years since Alfred's death. There is a bust of Alfred in the tourist information unit in the Guild Hall. Alfred's statute is very near the Guild Hall. The unveiling of the statue was quite a social event, proceeded by a procession through the packed city streets, and address by the Bishop of Winchester. The huge statue measures 17 feet from the base to the top of Alfred's arm. Curiously, the sword was made to be detachable, though the rest of the statue is a single, solid bronze casting. The statue is set atop a rectangular block of granite from Cornwall, with another tapered block acting as a base.

We visited the Christmas Market. It was a good day out. The town is amazing. Such lovely buildings. Highly recommend an all day breakfast in Greens in Jury Street. The staff were so friendly and attentive.

For history buffs or those curious about the past, this statue is a must-see, offering a glimpse into the legacy of a legendary ruler.

An iconic city landmark that stands in the middle of the road at the east end of Winchester's historic high street. The bronze statue, on a massive plinth of Cornish granite, was erected in 1901 to commemorate the great Saxon king who made Winchester England's capital in the 9th century. It's in a very busy area close to the bus terminus, with constant traffic, but there's a pretty little park with handy free toilets just across the road. I found it a good starting point for exploring the city.

The Victorian statue of Alfred the great is the largest statue in Winchester (the others are war memorials.) It's a bronze colossus standing on two large blocks of granite, looking along the Broadway towards the location of the castle. The statue was erected in 1899 to celebrate the thousandth anniversary of Alfred's death. It's a "romanticised" figure, with a distinctly heroic look. A sort Victorian pastiche of what a great king ought to have looked like. Now, it stands at the end of a car park in the middle of the road and looks perhaps, rather forgotten.

Being born in Hampshire the UK's best county!! I love Winchester for it's historical value and will always be the hub of everything Hampshire has to offer. It's a beautiful place with good shopping area, and good connections throughout the county, very busy in the Spring/Summer months due to tourism and this adds to Winchester's attraction. If you have never been to Winchester, where have you been?? Within a short walk, there is so much to see, visit and be part of. If it's relaxation you want, why not try the great selection of food outlets, or, relax have a coffee and watch the world go by, that bliss in my eyes. All within an easy distance from good hotels and B& B's

Winchester Town was very good. Cathedral was nice. Guildhall was breathtaking. Had a lovely day out. The rain didn't put a damper on the day.

Huge statue - she’s a mammoth! Fun instructions. Loved his expression and where it was positioned is a highlight of the whole road. Could’ve done with a photo of it from a drone so we could see it’s full stature. Very symbolic, makes me proud to be a historian. Beautifully lit at night and makes for a dramatic portrait of the most revered king in English history. Looks great both day and night, gives me chills x

It's a statue, a good size, quite hard, a solid erection. It's in the middle of a road, which I find an odd location for an erection of this kind. I declare this to be a 2 star erection, but I gave it an extra star for being a big black one, making it much easier to see at a distance and a convenient meeting place

King Alfred’s Statue is located on a central reservation just by the college. There’s a path around it but be careful crossing the road. The statue is substantial and befitting Englands finest King, defeating the invading vikings and securing Englands future. It’s a great part of English history and a good chance to catch up on English history. Plenty of nearby parking

The statue is iconic and King Alfred played a very large part in the history of Wessex. Winchester was the ancient capital of Wessex and King Alfred led the fight against the Vikings . Eventually the tribes united to form England, and the rest as they say is history.

Winchester is a great place. A selfie with at the Statue of King Alfred the great is a must do thing. Beautiful park right along side of the statue to sit and watch the world go by. So much to do and visit in this historic place.

A very well made statue of king Alfred the great. I was hoping to take a picture with it up close but it is located very close to the road so you have to watch the cars. Personally, I feel that the statue should be moved to a more prominent part of the city for it to be appreciated more.

Oh well, just passed by this morning entering Winchester from the south. The hidden gem of Winchester, no doubt. No crowds, massive church, beautiful gardens with the church reflected in the pond, and extra helpful staff/priests/volunteers.

Nice visit! Staff is so kind and helpful. It was raining and it was in June so we had the place for ourselves. Very nice visit, quite short. The gardens are beautiful, and we loved the churchyard. There is also a tea room, which we couldn't try for it closed before we finished our visit of the church and hospital. However, an organist was practicing in the church and it was lovely! I would recommend this visit if you come to Winchester, alongside with the cathedral, of course.

Highly underrated place. Very few tourists (actually there were nobody just me), which is in high contrast with other attractions in the city, such as the cathedral. The place is excellently maintained, the garden is beautiful. Without overexaduration, this is one of the most memorable places I have ever visited.

Cafe is only open in summer and the church and grounds are £7:50 entry fee (adult Jan24). Looks nice from the outside but difficult to see that you’d spend very long inside the church so we didn’t go in. Other reviews say it’s worth going in so maybe another time

It was truly remarkable to walk around the walls that were once pristine and beautifully adorned housing some of the most powerful figures of that time. Throughout the castle ruins, there are descriptive boards that explain the original architecture in great detail. If you ever come to Winchester, you should definitely not miss the Wolvesey Castle!!

Wolvesey Castle was one of the greatest medieval buildings is England - the palace of the powerful and wealthy bishops of Winchester. Throughout the medieval period the bishops of Winchester held one of the highest positions of power in the English church, as well as in national politics. They owned vast estates stretching from Somerset to London which brought them great wealth. Although known today as a castle, Wolvesey was in fact a luxurious palace. The surviving ruins of Wolvesey were largely the creation of one man, Bishop Henry of Blois, who built a palace befitting his immense wealth and powerful position. When Henry of Blois became bishop of Winchester in 1129, the residence consisted of one large hall block, which had been built in about 1110 by the previous bishop, William Giffard . Until his death 42 years later, Henry continually added new buildings, which consist of another hall block, a keep, a defensive tower, further walls and two gatehouses. Henry's palace survived virtually intact for the next 500 years! It is his work that comprises most of the ruins seen today. The ruins are now in the care of English Heritage. The entry is free. Opening times : April - October (daily) from 10 am till 5 pm. From November - March ( only Saturdays and Sundays) from 10 am to 4 pm. Definitely recommend it!

A fairly low key start or end to the wonderful 100 mile South Downs Way path. It’s in the mill’s garden beside the bridge, but the garden was locked when I was there. To start the path cross the road and follow the path downstream beside the river.

This isn't really the start point. That is more in the town centre by the river, where a plaque denotes the 100 mile distance

An excellent museum, well worth a look. It quite surprised me in fact. A chronalogical history of the regiment through to today. The diorama of the battle of Waterloo is beautiful and presents a summary of events in the battle with wonderful clarity. Take a look if at all interested, I recommend it.

Very interesting museum on two floors, with a stair lift. Lots of history to see. But the best bit is the display of the battle of Waterloo. Huge display case bigger than my living room with thousands of little figurines. The battle is explained with lighting and narration and is done very well.

If you are interested in the history and development of light infantry, their tactics and efect upon the outcome of many battles this is the museum for you. Traces the history of the rifle brigades from the experimental battalion through to the ultimate formation of the Royal Green Jackets. Detailed diorama of the Bottle of Waterloo with accompanying commentary. Many and varied exhibits all beautifully presented.

A great museum filled with loads of information about the Royal Green Jackets and their action in the American Colonies and Napoleonic wars through to the modern day. Well worth a few hours if you like military history and very reasonably priced entry and free parking!

This is first class museum. Even if you don’t have a passion for the rifles it’s still excellent. Games for kids, interactive exhibits, fantastic audio visual work and models. So many items from uniforms and swords to rifles and militaria. Spanning over 2 centuries. Well laid out and nice staff. Was free the day we went but usually cheap anyway.

Excellent There is a stear lift to those whom can't go up on the stears. Fantastic displays! The entrance fee was £3.75. Carers goes free!

This museum and the others in the vicinity are a definite visit but you need to be able to do so over a period of time. We found that we could only do 2 at a time as we were all museumed out after about four hours! Luckily if you buy a single ticket for all the museums, 1. It saves you money and 2. You can use it any time within a year of the date purchased which is what we did.

This is a small Museum on three floors. There is a small lift at the back of the museum. It has a lot if Roman artifacts on the first and second floors. It is a payable Museum. I would say give it a miss and do the guided tour of the city if you are strapped for time and cash and not a fan of the Romans. There is a small shop. The staff are very helpful and friendly. You can get in half price if you have an Art Pass. There are a couple of dressing up boxes on the first and second floors.

Friendly staff, the square where the museum is located is a postcard! Pubs, cafes , tables out with the background of The Cathedral! Magical place. Would love to live there!

From US on holiday. This museum was a great stop on our walk around Winchester. It’s fairly small but packed full of interesting exhibits that catalogue Winchester’s ancient past. Especially good for kids as they can try on different outfits and there’s a lot they can touch and play with. The staff were amazing and left our family feeling like we were part of the Winchester community. Highly recommend.

We thoroughly enjoyed the museum and all the exhibits which told the story of Winchester in a clear and exciting way. Though little could be touched by me, a blind person, there was enough information to make the visit thoroughly worth while and rewarding. It would be good however if the Moot horn exhibit could be made to work so that we could hear the sound of it. The atmosphere of the museum was friendly and welcoming , it was accessible to the disabled and there was an interesting lift which was very easy to use. All in all the visit was very pleasurable. Thank you.

Had tickets through the three in one tickets with 878AD. We really loved the museum and it was very much child friendly. Our three year old did not want to leave and loved the dolls house and the small castle to build. It held some lovely pieces to see. Great experience.

Another awesome little museum jam-packed with local/regional history from pre-Roman times to the Anglo Saxons and Victorian era. Great artefacts on display, lots of information and friendly staff - should definitely be included in any trip to Winchester!

Brilliant and informative. Combine it with a tour around the historic sites of Winchester. It makes history come to life. Look at the fine details on the coins and the jewelry. You will be amazed. The city of Winchester model is fascinating for anyone but particularly if your family have lived in Winchester in the past. You might find where they lived as I did.

FANTASTIC impromptu visit, with my young son (aged 3) - entertaining, and informative, for both of us. HIGHLY recommend! Winchester City Museum is home to a brilliant collection, which tells the story of the city through time, and is complemented by exemplary, drop-in, interactive activities for children of all ages! We especially enjoyed the Roman dressing-up kit; the brass rubbing stations; the 'be an archaeologist' sand trays, complete with tools; the Punch & Judy puppet theatre play, and the Victorian shop role play... There was much more we could have explored, but our time was limited - we'll just have to go back, especially for the museum's scheduled Family events! Bravo the team of dedicated staff, and volunteers, who create these activities - they really do bring the place to life! 👏 P.s. The entry ticket (which the ticket desk has logged in their system, should the hard copy be forgotten - as it was our case!) enables unlimited, year-round access (perfect for those, 'We need to find some shelter!' / 'Where can we kill some time, while we wait for x?', moments!).

This place is superb!! Small museum but what a collection of fun! It was a cold, very rainy day and we were a group of 4 kids, ranging from 8-14, a very sprightly pensioner and 2 young middle aged ladies all needing entertaining and did this fit the bill! There was something for all of us: games, top trumps, archeology, dressing up, bones and pottery fragments to decipher, reading and learning and admiration of treasures all spread out over 3 small floors. I recommend you book in advance and when you get there, start at the top and work your way down. Staff were lovely and friendly, one very clean (disabled) toilet on the bottom floor and a little gift shop. The bottom floor also exhibits a (large) small scale of the town which is very pretty to look at. Do go, you won't be disappointed.

We visited here as part of a group ticket with the Westgate Museum and Great Hall. The Museum has 3 floors, each covering a different time period - roughly the Iron Age/Roman city, the anglo Saxon and Medieval city and finally the Industrial Revolution city. There was lots to see and read on each floor and plenty of activities for kids too. We spent nearly 2 hours here so there's plenty to keep you busy. The staff were lovely as well, very welcoming.

I used to live fairly close to Winchester but I could not understand how or why it was so very important. Centuries ago it was one of the hearts of medieval England. But now it is a mere shadow of its former self. I decided to spend some time in the Winchester City Museum to see if I could discover some of the secrets of the once great City. I was very impressed with the news that they were connected to some important archeological digs. I would've very much liked to have been considered for one of the local excavations. And downstairs in the museums basement one of the staff proudly showed me what looked like a small lump of mud. Apparently the lump of mud had been discovered during a 'dig'. I hope that I didn't appear to be too ignorant to participate in contemplating the origins of this mysterious little lump. I almost had another unfortunate mishap were I couldn't see the price tags on the postcards. So I wrongly assumed that they were all free. Luckily the staff explained my error and I paid for the postcards before leaving the museum. Very helpful, friendly staff.

Situated on three floors Only down side, I'm not sure how accessible it is for those with limited mobility.

Small local museum over three floors containing artifacts ranging from the Roman period through to the modern era, with nice local additions. The museum is free to enter but there are donation boxes located throughout to help support its upkeep.

I was expecting more as it was not a free museum. It’s quite small actually and it wasn’t the most interesting in my opinion. Thankfully it wasn’t expensive but I was hoping for more. The museum seems old and a bit sad unfortunately. I don’t regret visiting as I learned few things about Winchester but it’s not a must do.

I will advise not to take children to the college tour. It's boring and too much talking led by tour guide. Our tour guide is an old fashioned English boy who appears to be snobby and not friendly. Children felt tired and sat down on the college bench. But this was not allowed by the tour guide because he wanted every tour member stays together and perhaps does the same thing whilst he's talking, such as standing. I wish to give this service a 0!

It was a nice days at this great collage I still remember each second I spent there lovely people were in my life.

Interesting though I wish I had asked more questions.

A first class school where they develop confident and intelligent young men for life.

The Winchester Buttercross is a good example of Early Medieval tradition of High Crosses. Used as boundary marker of a significant territory and political power. There are twelve figures on the statue. You can't miss it in the middle of the busy High Street. You will be amazed how tall it is. A plaquette with a brief explanations can be found on the nearby building.

This is usually a good place to listen to buskers. It is often the case that there are many people seated around the Monument. It is worth seeing this place.

This is one of many historic monuments in this beautiful City of Winchester,there is so much to see and do,we only had half a day nowhere enough to see everything this place has to offer.We managed to see the City Mill,the City Museum and of course the magnificent Cathedral,it’s full of interesting shops,cafes and restaurants with local inns scattered around,making it a great place to visit where there is something for everyone.We had a fantastic day and can highly recommend you visit if you are touring in this area.👍

This is a wonderful ancient monument from the 15th century and was originally a point for market sellers to stand and sell their wares (hence the name buttercross) although you're now more likely to find kids catching Pokemon. It's well preserved and is a great spot to watch the world go by, usually to the sound of buskers!

A fascinating, ornate focal point on Winchester high street which attracts tourists, buskers and pigeons. A "must photo" for visitors. It does need cleaning.

The Gurkha Museum is interesting. It is small and informative. There are two entrances. It is a pay to enter Museum. The Museum has other military Museums around it and you can buy a combi ticket.

Astonishing and often moving insights into these famous warriors. My late father fought alongside the Gurkhas during WW2 in Burma and had huge admiration for them. I had waited many years for this visit and was truly impressed.

We decided to take a look at this museum as we were in Winchester for the day. The museum is housed in a beautiful building. Car parking is available (get a permit from reception). It’s free entry for Art Fund Pass otherwise currently only a fiver. It’s a small museum as it takes up only a portion of the building, but had some nice interactive displays. A lot of displays were quite text heavy. They are working on improving and modernising their collection so looking forward to seeing that in the future.

Spent an hour touring through the exhibition and understanding the history of the Gurkhas. The museum is compact so do come when there are lesser crowds. Place is serene and peaceful, perfect for a morning activity and head towards High Street for lunch!

Very interesting military museum fully explaining the origins of the relationship of the Gurkha’s to the British Army. As well as detailing all of the actions and battles fought by the Gurkha’s there are full details of the Nepalese people their religion and lifestyle. It is little wonder they are one of the hardiest fighting element of the British Army. Well worth a visit

Was very impressed with amount of quality artifacts at The Gurkha museum, which also had lots of interactive elements and was full of important memorabilia with a stacked literary floor. Charlie Martin, head of fundraising and marketing gave us full insight into their upcoming plans for modernisation. Had a lovely breakfast at the nearby coffee shop. Smokey joes too! Definately worth a visit.

A very interesting museum with lots of displays and information. It is worth noting that the displays are on the ground and first floors with two flights of stairs in between - no lift at that point in the museum that we could see. Fortunately my elderly father managed them okay but it could be a concern for others with mobility issues.

We visited here with a combined ticket for the Great Hall and City Museum too. The Westgate is quite small but it's interesting to walk around the outside first to see it's original defensive role as one of the city gates. The lady in the ticket office was lovely and very helpful and the museum has, for its size, a lot of exhibits and information including activities for kids. We probably spent about half an hour inside the building.

I decided to make a trip to Winchester on the 24th July 2018 and then again in September. I had never been before. Winchester is a city and the county town of Hampshire, England. It is situated about 61 miles south-west of London and around 13 from Southampton which is its closest city. Winchester developed from the Roman town of Venta Belgarum. The city is home to the University of Winchester and Winchester College, the oldest public school in the United Kingdom still using its original buildings. There is so much to see here in this fine city and spending a day here you would find it difficult to cover all the famous sites. To name a few the Cathedral, Wolvesey Castle or Old Bishop's Palace the River Itchen walk, the old site of Winchester Castle the Great Hall being all that remains now, The Guild Hall, Winchester City Museum, The Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum and Memorial Gardens, Westgate Museum, The Royal Green Jackets Museum, Winchester's Military Museums, King Alfred the Great - Statue which stands in The Broadway, Winnall Moors Nature Reserve which can be found at Durngate Place, Winchester, Abbey Gardens, 21 Colebrook St, Winchester, After spending about 5 hours here I was defeated it was in the blazing sun of the heat wave we had in July 2018. I managed to walk the River Itchen walk, see Winchester Cathedral, along with Wolvesey Castle, The Great Hall. The River Itchen in Winchester flows from mid-Hampshire to join with Southampton Water below the Itchen Bridge in Southampton. The river has a total length of 28 miles and is noted as one of the world's premier chalk streams for fly fishing. Watercress thrives all along the Itchen valley in its once pristine, crystal clear waters, now affected by some farming practices. This Grade-1 listed building is not wheelchair accessible due to its age, and there is a considerably steep staircase from the street entrance. The Westgate Museum is operated and funded by Hampshire Cultural Trust. This independent charity champions world-class culture and exists to showcase, connect and empower Hampshire’s creative economy. The Westgate Museum’s opening time for July and August 2018 are: Monday: 10:00am – 5:00pm Tuesday: 10:00am – 5:00pm Wednesday: 10:00am – 5:00pm Thursday: 10:00am – 5:00pm Friday: 10:00am – 5:00pm Saturday: 10:00am – 5:00pm Sunday: 12:00pm – 5:00pm Open weekends only after 31 August 2018.

We saw the gate but by the time we arrived at the museum, it was closed. The entrance fee was £8. I like the detail of the water feature.

Very enjoyable. I found the prisoner graffiti from hundreds of years ago very interesting. The view of the high street from the top of West gate is beautiful. You can see all the important sights from up there, there's even a guide to point them out to you. Absolutely loved our visit to Winchester. If you love history it's a must! Plus if you buy a ticket at either West gate or the Winchester museum you can get tickets for both at a discounted price.

The museum is located right at the one end of High Street in town and conveniently located. It’s housed inside a surviving fortified medieval gateway. It tells the remarkable history of Stuart and Tudor Winchester. The display tells the story of Winchester in 16th and 17th centuries. We can learn about the ancient city gate, the English civil war, crime and punishment, prisoners graffiti and weights and measures etc.. One adult ticket costs £6 to visit both museums, Westgate museum and the City museums.

Lovely little exposition but with very vivid collection & history information. Staff is super friendly & ready to tell you all about Winchester history that is quite reach & legendary. As a nice bonus: you can try clothes of the past centuries to make authentic pictures as well as visit roof top terrace of the museum with a city view. The entrance is free! Though, you can leave donation to keep that amazing place in shape.

It is quite small, but full of history. It is good that it is bundled with the Great Hall. Otherwise it would not be worth the money.

Great little museum with interesting artifacts connected to the city - including King Charles 1st boot 😄 (how it came into the possession of the museum I'm not sure, but he did stay in the city on his way to London to be executed). Worth the admission just for the view from the roof, where you have a great view down the high street (shame about some of the more modern buildings blocking the view though!)

Great outdoor space. Used to have a hilltop fort. Wooded copse and an old turf maze are still unique plus stairs up the side. Great views of the Winchester area.

A pleasant circular walk with views over Winchester and the River Itchen running alongside. The Handlebar Café is at the base of the hill next to one entrance to the nature reserve.

Good place for a good 2 hour walk and the hill is easily accessible due to wooden steps, good for dog walks but beware of cattle livestock roaming free if dog off lead

It goes uphill, so you have to come down the other side. It can be a bit slippery as it had been raining, so wear the right shoes' lovely views from the top on a clear day it does have steps to the top as well

Beautiful views and plenty of space to picnic. Small cafe on the bridge. No bins so take all rubbish home. Lovely wildflowers and plants.

Lovely place to visit. Dog walkers. Walkers or joggers would love it here. History lovers too. Great scenery and good atmosphere.

A really beautiful place for a walk. We started from the town centre, went via the Alms Houses and headed through Winchester Meadows before approaching St. Catherine's Hill ....but you can also head up via the viaduct walk which starts near the park and ride. The views from the top are Incredible so it's definitely worth the effort. It's also definitely worth exploring the "summit" for the turf maze which we unfortunately didn't have time to find. It was a bit breezy the day we were there but still sunny. Overall it's definitely worth a walk and not that challenging given the entire way up has steps so there's no chance of you losing your footing as you go up and down.

Lovely place for a walk. With 300+ steps to the top of the hill, it's definitely worth the leg burn for the spectacular views of Winchester and the surrounding area. I like to park on the lay-by by the traffic lights before you join the M3. This way I always end up at the steps first. A circular cliff top walk which takes you all the way round back to the steps. If you wish to stop for a coffee or a light snack, then instead of following the path all the way back to the steps. Take the decline down and your come to a train tunnel and a small café is situated here. Great for a pit stop although the ice cream is a little expensive I felt. For what you get! We then walked on the path next to the river which took us all the way back to the car. All in all an excellent couple hrs spent. A favourite walking spot.

A nice place to come for a walk and see some sights

Wonderful hill with a terrific view of Winchester. It's also a spiritual place with wildlife and woods, steeped in history.

The family dragged me out...for a walk..to get my steps up!! I was pleasantly surprised to find that this 'hill' had very sensible sturdy wooden steps to take you to the lofty top! I had visions of scrambling up muddy walkways. It was a bit of a killer for an old unfit bird like me...but I did it! And wow...it was worth it. The views are stunning. There is a small woodland on the crest..and a little grass maze which the grandkids liked. But the views....beautiful....definitely worth the shortness of breath in the climb! And coming back down was easy! And a happy 11000 steps!

This was our local hill for many years. We always enjoyed walking up there via various different paths that all took us to the mizmaze on top. Perfect spot for a picnic away from the usual hustle and bustle. Despite this being a popular location it never became crowded.
