Beautiful, and a must-see if in Whitby. The one downside is the cost. Whilst appreciating its a National Heritage site, charging £16 per adult is too steep in my opinion. Make it around £8-£10 and you'll attract significantly more people. Cracking views from the area, and the neighbouring church is worth a visit too. Conquer the 199 steps, too, and feels even more of a worthwhile visit as well

This is a place that leaves a sense of awe, there's some magical about this ghostly skeleton of a building perched atop the cliff. Below the river runs down to the harbour mouth a bloody brown from the sediments, adding to the ominous presence of the stone giant looming above. Accompanied by an excellent museum and exhibits; well worth a visit. A must for vampire lovers.

Great afternoon. Lovely views. Interesting museum, nice cafe with friendly staff. Well stocked gift shop. We got the oven top tour but up which is great for sight seeing, and c walked back down the steps and through the town

Had an awesome day and was one of the days the sun came out. We have been to Whitby a few times but never actually been into the Abbey. Such a lovely piece of history with some great views of Whitby so glad we decided to pay it a visit.

What's not to love about quality history. Good size car park. Ruins are fully accessible and a joy to stroll around. The gift shop and museum are both well stocked and staff are great. Is good value for money

Whitby abbey is a stunning ruin sitting atop the cliffs of Whitby. There is a great museum/shop and lots of informative signs around the grounds. The parking outside is run but the council but it's reasonably priced. There are some toilets in the car park that take 50p to use.

One of the best places bearing witnesses to the English history and heritage. Entrance ticket is around £12 per person. But it is worth every penny. Ample parking and parking is free of charge during winter till 1st of March. There is a museum, tea room and a souvenir shop which could be accessed by the same entrance fee. You could easily spend the full day here. Whitby town is also a nice little town for a walk, shopping or even site seeing. Fish and chips in Whitby are amazing.

It's the view from inside and far away outside are both equally outstanding. And being able to walk inside the tidied-up ruins is also a great feeling. Almost half of the walls don't exist anymore, still, you can have the feeling of how it was like a few hundred years ago being in it.

An ancient Abbey in its ruins. It is located on a hill top. You can drive there as well as walk from the city centre. If you walk, then be ready to climb the hill. You need to pay for tickets if you want to go in, else you can see it from outside.

Beautiful, absolutely well worth the visit and very photogenic. On a fine day it’s stunning, equally on a miserable day the appeal is even more; in the evening it’s sooo atmospheric. I can see why Bram Stoker was so taken with it. The museum and shop are also fascinating and worth wandering around. Love it and will visit again.

As a tourist location, this place is amazing. You are able to get up close to the Abbey itself and there are a lot of photo opportunities from many different angles. There is also a small museum which informs you of the history of the Abbey, along with a well stocked gift shop.

Worth the long drive to visit and take in all the history! The town of Whitby is also worth exploring. There are many fish and chip shops around but plenty of other places to eat, dining in or taking away.

Great place to discover the history of not only the Abbey but of the historical figures who been here through out the ages including fictional figure Dracula. There is a great museum and gift shop and we were fortunate to arrive in time to view a display of hunting birds. Well worth a visit.

Whitby is absolutely beautiful ❤️ it's very English reminds me of Cornwall it's unspoiled British beauty...I recommend the boat tours and walk around the streets it's very pirates of the Caribbean and traditional British. There's a large variety of fish and chips shops.. What a beautiful place I will be back

Fantastic day spent at the Abbey. Arrived on the open top Whitby tour bus. Weather was good for most of my visit. Well maintained ruins and grounds. The views are stunning. The actors who enacted the Dracula Experience were absolutely amazing and they included the children who were there. It was a day to remember. If you were healthy enough you could access the Abbey by the 199 steps at the side of St Mary's Church , you could drive or you could enjoy the hop on off bus like I did.

Fantastic, historic, atmospheric, and highly recommended. If you are put off by the hill get the Whitby Tour Bus which gives you great info on area and runs regularly with the usual hop on hop off set up. Abbey has good facilities shop, cafe, toilets etc. Not to be missed if in the area.

We stayed in the old town. It was so magical. Being avid trekkers, we just had to walk to Robinhood Bay along the cinder path.. It was wonderful.. Fish and chips, of course .. excellent restaurants.. Be back soon..

This is a really nice walk to do during the day but there are many steps up to the top to reach the abbey. Didn't have to purchase tickets. it was free and there is also a museum to learn about local history and gift shop.

Love it here. We have family membership so don’t pay for entry and get 10% of shop purchases which is always good! Being able to bring our dogs along is what really makes it for me. A bit muddy on our visit today but then with all the rain we’ve had it’s hardly surprising. Staff were really friendly and helpful. The museum area has been done really nice and there’s some real interesting bits to look at.

Large council pay and display car park, with options from a couple hours stay to all day. Payment is by cash or card /contact less. There is a 2.5m height barrier at entrance, but was not in use and looked like had not been for a while. There are public toilets on site (40p). Nice quick easy entry to the Abbey, the staff member was informative and very helpful. Dog friendly /welcomed on a lead. Nice wander around this historic site on a headland with great views over Whitby and the coast. Well worth a visit. You can exit via the site museum and gift shop. There is a dog friendly cafe on site also 👍

Not to be missed, surrounded in lore and mythology due to Bram Stoker’s Dracula! It stands on the hill overlooking Whitby and can be seen from miles around. An English Heritage site so you pay to get in, dogs are allowed on a lead, there is a museum, shop, cafe and toilets on site parking nearby on top of the hill or make the walk up the 199 steps from Whitby centre. Stunning views over the coast and Whitby. We were there during half term and there was an actor there as a monk doing a scene about the history of the abbey with visitor participation! I was hoping there was more ruins standing but wouldn’t have missed this visit.

such a pretty place. Truly enjoyed our visit. We went on Easter Sunday and they had an easter egg hunt which was fun for the kids. I highly recommend being an english heritage member as it allows you to visit these sights over and over again

The inspiration behind the origins of Dracula and the history of the abbey itself is an inspiration enough behind visiting the place. Easy enough to get there, plenty of parking space (paid), enough of archaeological items to keep you busy for a couple of hours if you like reading and have some background in the history of the location.

Whitby Abbey Historical Landmark, Abbey Ln, Whitby YO22 4JT. On a cold and windy day definitely worth the climb up all the steps. As a member of Historic Scotland we were able to enter for free, we did not have our passes but the staff were very friendly and informative and allowed us in. Another reason to renew next year. Well done to the girl on duty (04.04.2024 /12pm). An interesting walk around the ruins especially for fans of the Dracula books.

Lovely day spent in Whitby. The whole family got together for a day trip to visit the harbour ⚓️ Popped in to The Moon and Sixpence for a coffee, while the rest of the family went on a boat trip in the bay. Walked around the whole marina, taking in the fabulous atmosphere and great food. Stopped for a delightful fish and chips lunch, but couldn't resist the seafood stall either! 🦐 🦀 😋

We went on a stormy day and it was amazing! Seeing the ferocity of the sea smashing into the harbour walls, walking the walk way and having the sea surge beneath us - it was fantastic and the kids loved it!

Full of life, both on water and land. A favourite tourist destination which is always a pleasure to visit, with the Abbey ruins presiding over the bustling scene. We arrived on the 9.20am NYMR service from Pickering which is the best way to reach Whitby, cars bringing their own problems and headaches. There is a park and ride facility which greatly improves the quality of the experience for car owners and their families.

Absolutely love whitby. Beautiful pups both sides of the river and good places to eat. Great for the kids fishing and catching crabs. Great beaches and rock pools. Lovely shops especially if you love jewellery. Fantastic boat trips and fishing trips available. Beautiful iconic swing Bridge. A wealth of local history. Access to a Beautiful coastal walk to robin hoods Bay.

Amazing to see the boats coming into the harbour, stunning views all the way around the harbour itself. Parking charge that’s at the closest car park for this is reasonable but worth paying. Fully recommend visiting if in the area even with children, you could end up watching the boats all day if not careful! Beautiful walk along the harbour.

Lovely walk around chic little shopping streets and up to the harbour. Very clean area. Well kept buildings. All public toilets are pay at turnstile at 40p!

Whitby is a beautiful seaside town with the notorious connection to Bram Stoker and Dracula. Lots of shops ranging from gothic and quirky right through to high end jet and Amber jewelry. Found an amazing little shop that sells fossils and geodes called Natural Wonders down on Grape Lane. Also found Magpies fish and chips and Truly Scrumptious Ice cream on Pier Road that BOTH do gluten free food. Truly Scrumptious also do vegan ice cream!!!! Choose your time of visit carefully ( Whitby Goth Weekend especially.) As the streets are narrow and even on a quiet day can get really packed.

Great to walk around Whitby Harbour and see what's going on. Fishing boats and if your lucky you'll see the fish auction. Fishing trips for those that fancy it and a few fantastic little boat trips including one galleons style that plays pirates of the Caribbean... Lol. Loads of seats and loads of cafés. Little bit of tat with the amusements but that's expected. Over the bridge is the old town and harbour, very nice for a walk around and browsing the shops. I like the goth clothes sold for Whitby goth weekends, but that's another story.. Lovely cool place.

Spent the hottest day in the history of UK at Whitby beach. Ended up being one of the best days of my life ☺️ highly recommended. Clean water and good facilities available

Lovely big stretch of sand but a steep path to access (a lift is available further along but didn’t check details). I love the beach as does my dog , but I’m only giving 3 star as dogs are banned from 1st May until end of September. Seems ludicrous when they could be allowed on lead and/or maybe early morning and evenings. Why blanket ban them for the whole summer, £1000 fine apparently!!

Lovely big stretch of beach, lots of sand with rock pools as well. There are dog restrictions on here during the warmer months.

A great place for a family getaway. It's hard not to enjoy the beauty of this part of the island. A town with a famous abbey, magical streets and a beach, it creates an amazing composition of a place you always want to come back to.

Whitby is a nice scenic place ,massive tourism seams to be controlled by the weather though , could be even better with more shops, a McDonald's would do well here also,and what's with everything closing at 9pm?

Loved it here, we went looking for pebbles and found plenty we also found lot's of sea glass it was so much fun exploring everywhere digging in the sand and splashing in the water.

Always love visiting here its a lovely seaside place. Great shops best fish and chips. Would highly recommend a visit. Looking for somewhere to come for a holiday so we can spend more time here

Lovely place with some great views of the cliff sides! Went in September time but the temperature was thankfully good. Walked around in dress shoes as the Sand wasn’t too mucky and was easy to wipe off. A great place to go for a walk and have a picnic!

Nice beach in North Yorkshire. Very beautiful and pretty town. All sand beach so too much to do for kids in terms of playing in sand beaches. Street parking is all across the road so can be parked easily and get down to the beach. Its so deep you would have to go down but yeah very nice pretty walks ways are there so easy to carry pram etc.

Spent a couple of hours here. The beach is pretty but hard to access without walking further along due to a steep path. There was a Lotus Car Rally on the day we went which was good to see. The Abbey is the stand out attraction. There are restaurants to visit. A gentleman was playing the piano at the top of the cliff which added a little charm to the area. Overall a nice place but may not return as too many access issues.

A thoroughly enjoyable day in Whitby. It is a great place to visit with many things to do. Go walk up the 199 steps to the church and Abbey. Take boat trips of different time lengths from 20 mins to hours, depending on how much time you have.

Great place to take the family and the dog. Everyone is friendly. There are a few nice places to eat around or to get a drink.

Lovely beach, nice bit of sand, boat cruises are great value for money, watch out for the mosquitoes and other insects.. don’t wear yellow. Great selection of fish and chips restaurants.. The pier is lovely to walk on although you will need a head for heights. Parking is an issue. Would visit again simply to explore the area more.

Alway a nice place to visit. The place , the people the scenery the atmosphere its all just pure bliss. Definable my happy place .i love whitby Amazing day out for the family everyone enjoys it here it's so relaxed and the fresh air is amazing. There's plenty of pubs which serve food and plenty of shops. Also has a train and bus station realy close to the beach and abbey so that's another added bonus 😀 There's lots of history in this town from bramstokers dracula to captain cook.

Fossils and rocks to be found on this beautiful beach and dog friendly with cafes and gift shops nearby. The added bonus is that access to the beaches are not down steep cliff paths.

A lovely location. As a continuation of the Whitby beach the sand is a soft golden yellow. There is the added bonus of having a small river flowing out to sea in Sandsend which creates a small lagoon for a warmer paddlung experience than that of the North sea. There is a reasonable amount of roadside parking and free public toilets nearby though it is an enjoyable 2.5mile walk from Whitby along the promenade and beach. There are a handful of cafes in which to buy refresments as well.

Clean beach with esay access and parking highly recommend exploring the area there's a lovely walk up a set a stairs from the car park

Terrific long sandy beach with reasonably charged roadside parking starting from 20p for an hour but 2 hours jumps to £3.00 and on up to 24 hours is available. Often used by surfers and dog walkers.

Lovely beach for a stroll. Took the hounds for a play in the water during sunset. Clean beach just down the road from Whitby, so perfect to head into town for fish and chips after.

Interesting church. For some reason I’ve not felt like I am in the church. It looks interesting from outside, but inside something is not right. Don’t know why, when you inside you have a strange feeling. Outside the stones on the grave yard are really old, some names can’t be read as they worn out by the winds.

Really quirky and interesting church that is probably what people see from afar and think is part of the abbey whose ruined walls you can see actually sit behind it! Open to the public FREE of charge, donations welcome. Small shop counter stall set up in the vestibule selling items to raise funds for upkeep. Would gladly buy and donate here rather than pay the outrageous English Heritage fees to see the abbey which is about 100m away. Inside the church is odd arrangement of pews and the raised central windows/skylights around the ceiling I’ve never seen anywhere before. Some reading material and history of church on display. Well worth the trip up the steps from Whitby.

Absolutely stunning and historical I love that this place has a spooky story attached to it vampires and Dracula himself right is full of extremely historical things and graves from the 17th century and older... I found it incredible.. places like this in UK are becoming increasingly rare so don't miss out..

It is an Anglican Church in Whitby. It is located near the Whitby Abbey. It dates back up to the 12th century. The church is fully surrounded by the graves of the faithful. I am not sure whether it has any service. The church has places allocated for persons or families as the structure shows. The cemetery here seems to have reference in the novel Dracula.

This church was a nice place on the walk to Whitby Abbey (Just next door). We had walked up the 199 steps and had a nice view of Abbey in the graveyard. It has a very chilled vibe considering its a church with graves all around. Amazing views all around. Benches to sit on.

Impressive location (top of hill), beautiful architecture. The church is on top of the 199 steps with a large old cemetery around it. The views of the landscape, the valleys, the town of Whitby, the cliffs are among the best I have seen in my life. A stroll at night through the cemetery was amazingly nice and eerie at the same time. It's safe and the views at night are incredible as well.

Amazing ancient church on a unique hillside location just beneath The ruins of Whitby Abbey and overlooking the Harbour of Whitby below. The interior feels as if it has been fitted out by shipwrights ....quite extraordinary experience!

Free entry to charming church that sits above the east cliff of Whitby at the top of the famous 199 steps and just before the abbey. The design of pew boxes is the most noticeable aspect and there's plenty of information boards and friendly volunteers to explain about it's design and history. There's a little shop selling cards, gifts and second hand books etc. Include it in your must see list of Whitby as it really is rather special and tranquil place in the most beautiful of settings. Kudos to the volunteers who keep it in order and greet visitors with good cheer. I was very charmed by it all.

One of the most scenic parts of Whitby, a thorough workout getting to the top, but as long as you can climb stairs, you can do this. Just take your time and enjoy the views. The Graveyard is filled with history, many going back decades. If you go at a low tide, beneath the graveyard on the beach is a concrete boat ship wreck. It’s a lovely walk, but make sure you have timings right.

One of the ways to get to the Abbey, up the 199 steps! Handrails all the way up with a few benches to take a breather on! Kids love to count the steps, look out for the markers on the ends! Fabulous views make it worthwhile! There is a very steep cobbled slope at the side for those daring enough to push a pram or wheelchair up there!

Great fun to walk up. The steps have an easy rise so even if you have walking problems you’ll be ok. There are handrails on both sides and a couple of benches if you need a rest.

Beautiful scenic view with and breathtaking views of Whitby Harbour and Sandsend. Really worth the massive hike on those steps to really appreciate the views. Best enjoyed on a summer evening. Go in the early morning or late evening for pictures with little to no people

Steps aren't too steep so they are relatively easy to conquer, perhaps with the occasionally break to catch your breath. Well worth the walk up, even just to see the views over Whitby. Beautiful location, thoroughly recommend.

As people say "Well worth the climb" . It's true. Climbed the steps a few times now. And never fails to impress. Love the place. It's a little bit romantic too. Nice to have a wonder around when yous up the top aswell. There is also a cobbled slope next to steps if you can't manage steps. Althoni would not recommend taking Prams, buggies and wheelchairs up. Which we seen last time.

A very trying but 'well worth it' climb. Like most of the comments here, it was a must if you come to Whitby. At every stage of the way, the views are amazing. The climb didn't seem hard or long in any way. It probably burnt off the fish and chips I just had 🤣 Good exercise for that view at the top

As the name suggests, it is 199 steps to the Whitby abbey and on the way, you’ll find great views of whitby. You will not regret visiting this. Not much access for wheelchair. Steps are not too steep.

Worth the walk, we love this everytime we visit whitby. We see the views through every changing season and they are beautiful. At the top you reach entrance to the the Abbey and church.

The stairs offer a great view of the town! There are quite a few, so it is nice that they are wide offering plenty of room to those that go faster or slower than others. In addition, there are benches along the way to stop and catch your breath if needed, or just take a few more pics without being bothersome to others navigating their way up & down. Both ends of the stairs are great as they take you into the town, or up to the Abbey.

What amazing views here over Whitby and the sea, and the harbour, it is spectacular to look over as you climb the steps it has many view points along the way, I would recommend that when you are in Whitby come and see the views here as you climb the steps, I had a very nice time.

A nice scenic way into the town from the Abbey and Youth Hostel. Joking 'I've lost count, better go back down and start again...' raises a smile from those coming down, but keep an eye out for the Roman Numerals marking each tenth step and you'll know where you are

There's no place like Whitby,my favourite place is at the top of the steps over looking the view,peace and tranquility only the sounds of the waves, seagulls and church bells. I adore the historical church and Abbey

One of the North Easts favourite seaside locations, fantastic views, brilliant coves and beach to explore, many quirky shops and plenty of food outlets. A great climb up the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey topped off by an ice cream.

What you would expect from a museum great fossils and nice to see the hand of glory. The tearoom was very busy and probably understaffed the instant coffee was a disappointment. Overall well worth a visit if it's your thing

Great exhibits of shipping, botany, wildlife and local history. There was a school visit going on and a boy aged about 9 or 10 very enthusiastically showed us where to go. Lovely cafe with friendly, helpful staff

Set in Pannett Park, a pretty little park close to Whitby's harbour and train station this is a great museum. It has a lot packed into its attractive interior. The entrance leads initially to a free art gallery and then the art gallery's gift shop. After the gallery gift shop is the museum ticket entrance and gift shop and museum. Tickets are annual passes and very reasonably priced for a museum with such a wide variety of exhibits. Stairs/lift lead to toilets and a tea room and a temporary exhibition section which currently exhibits 20th century wedding dresses. Rather like a sailor of old would bring all manner of objects home with him, this museum houses and an extraordinary variety of artefacts from far-flung places. There are gorgeous pieces of Japanese arms/armour, whilst carved wooden pieces from India/Africa rub shoulders with coral exhibits, models of all sorts and various silver/pewter or pottery objects from the Far East/Middle East or Russia etc. There are fossils, geological displays, beautiful or curious jet pieces. And ornate industrial era hair ornaments and personal items rub shoulders with scary looking medical instruments and a barometer based on the electro magnetic response of leeches. Displays of ancient bronze/iron age and Roman finds are found close by curious looking toys and horse gear or industrial machinery models. Darker themed displays touch upon superstition, burglary, smuggling, piracy and greed. Some stories are told by the displays, e.g. a local tale of 19th century community discord pertaining to public rights of way, or exhibits of local craftsmanship and industry. Well worth a visit.

A very worthwhile place to visit. Full of fossils, Whitby history, and cabinets of interesting artefacts. We thought £7 was good value for the vast amount there is to see. It also allows unlimited entry for another year which is probably more beneficial to residents of the area or if you are a regular visitor. The Tea Room located downstairs was a gem. The staff were very friendly, sandwiches made to order with many more food choices on offer, all served on vintage crockery which added a nice touch.

Best museum we had ever been. Extraordinary, interesting collection, good description. From the Stone Age to finds from Roman times, seafaring, insects, doll's houses and the history of Whitby. Highly interesting. We spent several hours and are looking forward to come back.

Lovely multilevel park which is well cared for. Great views across to the abbey. There's a play area and a community garden. The art gallery and museum is located here and it is also ace!

This is a well kept park, with plenty to see. It's great for children young and old, especially for those who would like to feed the myriad of grey squirrels that live there. Parts of the park are quite steep for wheelchair users, so you'd need to be really fit, or have a helper who is. However the paths are all tarmac, so are easy to use in most weathers. For those that Geocache for a hobby, there is an Earthcache there with its roots in Whitby Jet!

Been to Whitby staying with family many times. This was the first time I've been into the park, well worth the visit. Stunning views, Art Gallery and Museum. Children's adventure play area, Geo/Fossil Area. Accessibility: the park is on a hill, but good wide paths, and parking for disabled in the heart if the park. Car Park: at the top and Disabled behind the Art Gallery and Museum. Flora: Specimin Trees (leaflet available in the Art Gallery and Museum) and flower borders. Could do with Tree and Plant labels! Rose Garden: in front of the Art Gallery and Museum, scent was stunning. Signage: plenty of signs with park maps and info. Tearoom: in the Museum, not open at weekends in the summer due to the owners family commitments.

I love this park the squirrels are so cute we got some nuts to feed them and they crawl on your hand and eat the nuts out of your hand there little paws are so cute. We visited the muesum that was very interesting free for children which was a great added bonus saving money only pay for adults. The park is beautiful it has a water feature that is really lovely to walk around, when the sun is shining it is nice to sit here plenty of benches just be careful of the cheeky seagulls that are about! Also no dogs are allowed on this park so is very well looked after plus the children can freely run around and not have to worry about standing in dog poo. The park is lovely with lot's of different play equipment perfect for children of all ages.

A lovely park to escape the hustle and busle of the town. Plenty of benches to sit on and it's not normally too busy. The gardens are well maintained with lots of colourful planting.

The in the museum in Pannett Park is a hidden gem. Pass through the museum and head downstairs to the tea room, and you'll find a friendly welcome. Choice of coffee limited but comes in a large china cup which makes a pleasant change. I ordered a toasted teacake which came with plenty of butter (should have said no jam thanks). Seats available inside and out. We sat outside in beautiful sunshine surrounded by the magnificent park. May be possible to get wheelchair access without going through the museum. Ask. Handy for the large children's playground but out of sight. Restrooms available.

Kids loved it here. Made friends with other kids. Easily filled an hour. Which is good as there is free parking on the roadside if you can get a park. Alternatively, there is parking at the museum for disabled which is also in the park grounds. Lovely park with lots of places to sit and relax, picnic if wanted

Really well looked after and attractive park offering superb views of the Town and Sea below. Nice at all times of the year and plenty of places to sit down as well as pathways to walk around on hard standing. Looking forward to seeing the plants and flowers in full bloom in the Summer.

Lovely place to visit with the kids, well maintained gardens and a great park for the kids to play. If you are lucky you may even get the squirrel coming to say hello. 😊

This place is absolutely amazing. You just don't expect this kind of crisp green space during the month of January. All the plants are happy and you can tell the area is well looked after as the animals there are lively aswell as friendly. And the Squirrels!! Squirrels everywhere. 100% chance you could feed them if you brought something with you. They were all so curious. Also the views from the top of the park are absolutely astounding. You can see over almost entire city all the way up to the old Abbey ruins. Come Summer when everything is in bloom, one can only imagine it'll be even grander.

Brilliant mix of exhibits, so interesting. Lovely staff and a good little museum shop. The ticket gives you admission for a year. Can't fault it. Definitely worth a visit. Sits in a nice park with an excellent children's playground too.

Magical. Cute outdoor tea garden, friendly staff, lovely stream running through unspoilt valley, excellent walking, lots of birds, free parking. After wandering through the valley, we stopped at Falling Foss Tea Garden. Whilst sitting and eating our cream tea, we could hear the trickling water which was very relaxing and were visited by a number of small birds, this robin was very brave, we had our dogs with us too and it wasn't fazed by them. All packaging was recycled and recyclable, no single-use plastic in sight. There were a number of shaded seating areas, some wooden structures and some picnic tables with brollies.

Amazing place and we'll worth a visit. Small car park but easily found a space (Sunday afternoon in May) and a short walk down a steep hill takes you to the waterfall viewing point and tea room. The service was good and the food was great and reasonably priced. Not super fit so didn't venture down to base of the waterfall but great views from where we were.

Lovely family run cafe in a fantastic location. Short stroll downhill from the car park which is free !! Sat in the sun on both occasions this week and thoroughly enjoyed both visits. Family and staff all friendly and professional. Great value for money 10/10 !!! Sadly docked one point as first visit was exceptional food , faultless ... photo 2 roll.. Second visit sadly the same roll was a slight let down... photo 1 roll.. Will be back to try something new.. :)

An absolute gem of a place. Fantastic simple food perfectly made and presented. I had a BLT and the bacon is dry cured the tomatos were fresh cherry tomatoes and the lettuce was more like a mini salad. Mega. Excellent selection of fresh tea and coffee. Little play area and loads of seating.....even bar stool type seating looking out over the stream. I did see a wood fired pizza oven that I guess they use at more peak times.

Definitely off the beaten path, after a great couple of days at the coast, we set off home with the intention of finding this place to have some breakfast. After travelling down a single-track road, we were greeted with a beautiful woodland location with plenty of walks and a food venue which was very popular. The hosts were very friendly and helpful, and the food was delicious and locally sourced - definitely what we needed. The seating area is part of the cottage grounds, surrounded by the woodland with the waterfall just over the fence which you can view easily. You can walk down to the waterfall if you're feeling brave and up to it!

Amazing scones and hot chocolate (with baileys ❤️) followed by a walk down to the waterfall (not for the feint hearted and I wouldn't advise ) but it was a lovely relaxing 4 hours of exploring and enjoyment.

Visited today and honestly was such a nice scenic walk down. It’s a steep walk but worth it. Staff were super friendly. We ordered hot drinks and some cakes. I’d definitely visit again!

Beautiful place to visit. Great little outside cafe , plenty of seating, some covered. Sensible footwear strongly advised, be aware, their is a quite steep walk down to the cafe & falls view point from the medium sized car park.Access to the bottom of the falls is possible but not sign posted as it’s unofficial I believe.. adult supervision of children is a must !! Caution needed on all the footpaths, plenty of tree roots to catch you out..

Great little tea garden hidden away in the trees next to Falling Foss waterfall. On the coast to coast footpath but you need good footwear if you want to go for a walk through the trees - small length of boardwalk. Note very steep walk down from car park.

Lovely cafe, nice walk in the forest to whatever distance you want. The Falls are lovely. Food drinks excellent quality and price. Please of shad to sit on a sunny day.

Brilliant bacon butties set within beautiful woodlands. There are two 40 min walks along the valley which are both well worth the effort. The cafe area is very well done and offers a range of sandwiches, drinks and snacks. The bread used for the bacon is astonishingly good.

Excellent. We walked from Sleights and looked forward to the tearooms and they were very good. Efficient service, food selection good and tasty. We had bacon rolls followed by a cake/scone. Very clean and recycling of cups etc.

A really nice little spot for some great food and good hot drinks! Lovely walk down from the car park, beautiful setting. Hosts were lovely and friendly, making you feel welcome. Popular with walkers/hikers, it’s a must for anyone near Whitby.

I went in the off season when the Tea Garden was closed but it is lovely place for a hike and has a beautfil waterfall.

A great outdoor hideaway place, for walkers, visitors to area. Wonderful/safe view of Falling Foss. We called on our way home from Whitby. Didn't get chance to do a walk but will next time! Space for little ones to have a run around, few play items. Delicious snacks, cakes etc. and great coffee. Delighted that a chaffinch came near to our table looking for crumbs to eat?!

Firstly, a cracking and very welcome coffee and piece of cake after some steep inclines on our walk through sneaton forest. A lovely scenic spot to rest your legs, with the sounds of the Falling Foss waterfall in the background and we even had some birds for company. Well worth a visit. Plenty of seating and plenty of options for food and drink too.

Excellent presentation particularly the video in one of the upstairs rooms. Informative and very pleasant staff made this extra special. Would highly recommend if your interests lie in this area.

Great museum and awsome little place to go. This wasn't a planned visit we just went whilst we were in whitby with the kids. Adult tickets are £8.50 and are valid for 1 year and children under 16 entry is free when accompanied by an adult. There is volunteers here who can talk you through and give you knowledgeable information. I was definitely an eye opener this visit. If you like history it's definitely worth checking. The kids found it interesting aswell. The staff were amazing.

This was a little surprising treasure tucked away within old terraced houses on a cobbled street. It had charm and history. We took the nine year old - they were handed a pencil and an eye treasure hunt on paper. They proceeded to whizz through impatiently, frantically ticking off eyes they spotted (don't ask) and pronounced the entire affair done within twenty minutes. All the while the adults were trying to read through the throughly fascinating history that is Captain Cook. In short, absolutely recommend. I was fascinated and charmed. Perhaps a bit boring for children.

A really interesting (if fairly conventional) little museum dedicated to the life and exploits of Captain James Cook. The museum is housed in the home of Cook's mentor, rather than his family home (as I'd originally assumed), but no less interesting for that. It follows a fairly traditional format, with a large number of information boards and display cabinets - as such it's probably not great for small children (unless they're extremely precocious). Sadly one of the most interesting sounding rooms (the 'voyages' room) seems to be shut indefinitely. There was also a surprising amount of 'airtime' dedicated to the eradication of rats on South Georgia, which seemed rather tangential to the main theme of the museum. Overall an enjoyable and informative experience, though - definitely worth a visit.

This wasn't my idea to visit the museum, I walked past almost missing the museum. For such a small place they have used every inch of space all the way to the attic. I am looking forward to a return visit. The staff there are welcoming and friendly and passionate about the museum

James Cook was exploring Pacific ocean and some islands got his name. That what I knew till this morning. So whilst walking in Grape Lane just over the swing bridge when I noticed museum of James Cook decision could be only one. Visit and explore James Cook memorial museum. With no hesitation I went inside to learn more. I wasn't disappointed. On several floors of this 17th century building I found many details of Cooks life and his expeditions. Pictures, letters, memorabilia and models of his ship. Endeavour. The same name had the command module of Apollo 15 on mission to the moon. So Cook's exploring and discoveries were inspiring for outer space explorers and I'm sure they still will be in future. I'd like to mention the volunteering guide man in museum. A real gentleman who gave me instructions how to explore the museum and told me about history of Whitby in 18th century and Cook's life. I came to Whitby this morning only to take part in 5K parkrun, to eat lunch, and to drink a pint of local lager. But at the end also returned home with lots of interesting stories and details from History of England. Apriciate it.

A very clean, well presented museum situated in the home where Cook did his seaman apprenticeship. Original articles belonging to Cook and his wife as well as items related to his travels. An easy hour, though watch your head entering/leaving the attic. Some lovely postcards, including some painted by Stephanie, one of the volunteers here.

Visited in Residents Day so didn't need to pay. Lovely tour with lots of information. Would recommend even if you are paying.

Very educational museum. It is worth a revisit as a few additions have been made in the 2022. During Cook's apprenticeship, he had lived for a few years in this Quaker family home. Some rooms display 1700s a Quaker's household items. The inventory taken by Cook's landlord John walker after his mother's death has been used to recreate this Quaker Home. One room displays the artwork done by the artists went with cook on his voyages. It's a must visit museum for both who loves history as well as maritime facts. Interesting books and copies of drawings can be purchased at the museum. I liked the idea of the acknowledgement in the museum of the special naval and fishing skills Poleneseans had at Cook's time. (Please note that I have deleted my original review due to an incorrect fact I had mentioned which I heard while on the Whitby bus tour)

A great example of a small quirky British museum. Loads of interesting displays, one showing where sunken U-boats are out in the bay. Part of it was a mortuary where drowned sailors were brought- shows the harsh and dangerous lives they had.

Visited the museum ,such a charming informative place to visit .the old mortuary part is fascinating and the photos of the houses which fell into the sea. More to robin hoods bay than fossiling and rock pooling .do go it's so interesting .

Very interesting small museum on Robin Hoods Bay beachfront. You can buy fossils from the area and find local information about the fossils on those beaches. Robin Hoods Bay is a quaint little seaside place but it's incredibly steep. You really need to be fairly fit and I'm not sure about wheelchairs. There are buses from whitby I think hourly.

Tiny little museum, tucked away behind the main drag, up the narrow winding lanes. It is only small, two rooms downstairs and one upstairs. Free to enter, but it relies very much on your donations. Staffed by knowledgeable and friendly volunteers. Informative displays and exhibits on cliff erosion, smuggling, gansey patterns, ships in bottles, shipwrecks, all things coastal, ships models, naval instruments and more. The smaller room downstairs used to be the mortuary. If you want to learn more about the history of the Bay, then this is the place to come.

Lovely, quirky village with it's warren-like streets, seasonal shops (not many open in early March when we visited, hence 4⭐) and gorgeous vast beach. Rockpools, geology and glorious fresh air. It's VERY steep with lots of steps and hills, bring your walking legs with you!

Free entry and well worth a quick visit enroute to the pier. Some real gems in the display of past and present hero's of the RNLI and tales of Whitby storms and wrecks. Little shop attached selling all associated RNLI gifts.

Much Respect for the RNLI what a job they all do ! From the Ladies at the counter doing their bit, To The Men & Women who go out when needed ! For a fairly small museum there's a lot to see ! Fascinating ! We'll worth a visit.

Situated in the new side of Whitby overlooking the harbour this is great place to learn about the history of the life boat and those that served. Free to go into and access through the shop. We bought some items in the shop to support the great work this institution does.

Visited today. It opened last week following an extensive renovation. You enter via the RNLI shop which has plenty gifts available. The museum is in the old lifeboat station and one of the old lifeboats is preserved here. It has also been restored and for a boat over 100 years old, it is in magnificent condition. There are lots of lifeboat related items on display with loads of information. There are touch screen displays and a little are for the children to dress up and play whilst being made aware of water safety. Great for a quick visit, but I reckon you could spend an hour easily if you read and looked at everything.

A wonderful small museum dedicated to the Amazing work of the RNLI team at Whitby. It is free, doesn't take much time and uses the small space well to be very interesting. Well worth a visit.

This was not a planned visit. We just popped in with the children whilst on a visit to whitby. Such a great little place and also educational for the children. They thought it was interesting looking at things from times past. Also has a nice little gift shop 😊

FREE admission - they do accept donations. They have a tiny gift shop as you go into the museum itself. At the start but just after the gift shop, there’s a little ship replica & uniforms little children can put on and play on (suitable to Approx 7/8) and be lifeguards themselves. After that, there is information boards around the museum itself with good detailed displays. On your right there is a huge life boat in the middle of the museum when you walk in, the displays are around this and it’s quite clever to see. Don’t forget to look up when near the exit, you may be surprised.

Jaw bones at the top of some steps. You can see most of Whitby from there, the harbour, the 199 steps to the ruins of the church. I love Whitby years ago when my son's were young we used to go there regularly.

A place in the open air. Worth visiting for the view. Be prepared for strong winds. Fortunately I got to witness colorful skies. Finding a parking place could be tricky.

What a fab location! The whalebone arch is a reminder about Whitby’s past when whaling was practised. Whaling was a chance for great wealth for those who managed a successful catch, but incredibly dangerous. Many boats were capsized and men killed. On a fleet’s return to port, eager onlookers would watch for the telltale sign of good news: Crews would tie a whale’s jaw bone atop the ship’s mast as a sign that they had killed the animal and not the other way around. There is a fantastic view of the Abby, the church and the cottages clinging to the cliffs across the bay on the East cliff.

Whitby is a beautiful & historic place to visit with many attractions for the young & the older generation alike. the scenery is spectacular with plenty of places to eat & numerous pubs, plenty of walking to be done but remember hills are plenty, the views from the Whalebone's are glorious.

Whale bone arch overlooking Whitby Harbour and Bay - that's all there is too it. Great views

Stunning views over Whitby and the coastline, the whale bone arch is an iconic landmark in Whitby.

It's a replica of a whale's jaw bone that replaced the original arch thst was erected in 1853. The whaling was thriving industry in the coastal town of Whitby in Yorkshire in the last century. Sailing to the seas around Greenland hunting the whales for their oil. It was a way to earn lots of money but was very dangerous and sadly many ships and their crews never returned. A whale jawbone was attached to a ship's mast to signify that they had killed the mammal. And of course awesome views of the harbour and the Abbey.

As a frequent visitor to Whitby, I love to take in the views from the Whale bone arch and it is a must see for tourists. If you are visiting it's a must to see to take all the views of Whitby in.

One of Whitby's most iconic landmarks has seen better days but I would highly recommend making the walk up here if just for the views. Spectacular.

Wow what a lovely place to watch world go by. Abbey in distance lovely walling and nice cafe further up path. Only problem is new street lamps far too bright so cant do star watching along sea front. But soo peaceful. T

If you are anywhere near Whitby then it is a must visit The town is so very picturesque, the coastal smell of the sea, the cliff with the Abbey on the top, it's like being in a virtual town where everything is just so. The market is worth seeing, Thursday when I was there, the swing bridge is worth catching as the boats come in and out. The benches up near the whale bone are a perfect spot for a sandwich. No hassle from sea gulls unlike the South coast.

Mesmerising place. Would recommend to must visit. Good surf waves and perfect wind for Kite surfing.

Lovely place to visit. Weather was perfect which obviously helps. Took a boat trip around the harbour and saw some stunning views of the coastline.

Nice stroll along the jetty. Great views of the town, cliffs and Abbey. We might got fishing later this week.

Lovely walk out to the lighthouse in the bracing fresh air, the sea was angry and choppy, quite mesmerizing to watch!

Both are a nice walk to the end of the peirs and you really get to see how beautiful whitby is. Only down side if you have young kids or pets is there is no railings one some parts of the peir. But they are very wide so can keep away from the edges easy enough.

Spectacular! As you can see from the image it is a place to visit. The sea is so close and the air is fresh the lighthouse is a joy to walk to! Very easily accessible and does not cost anything to get to, brilliant

Great walk out to see Whitby's other lighthouse and restored pier. Nice on a hot day as the air is slightly cooler on this pier. Great place to view crashing waves and boats coming into the harbour.

Lovley walk along the pier, great place to bring dogs. Great for appreciating the docks of Whitby either by yourself or with a friend. I appreciate the great view of the rest of the town from the pier (shown in picture), it really demonstrated to me how quaint Whitby is.

Beautiful walk after visiting the Abbey. Watch the ships sail in and out of the harbour. Great place to fish if you remember to bring your rod. Cod, sole, and whiting.

Though not as tall as the West harbour Lighthouse its in a lot better condition. Its a much quieter location for an almost guaranteed quiet spot with aweso.e biews. Even though its only a short straight line distance from the West Lighthouse its a good 20minute walk between the two. Not many day trippers can be bothered going so far to see something so similar. There is now a new footbridge to gain access onto the outer harbour wall.

Nice walk from the city centre and it gives you a perfect view of the town, port and cathedral. Even in bright sunshine, it can be chilly out here, best to grab a jumper or a wind-cheater.

The Museum of Victorian Science in Glaisdale, Whitby is a hidden gem. Pay a visit and you'll be warmly welcomed into Tony and Pat's home. It was one of the highlights of our holiday. There's a fascinating painting in the hallway entitled An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump Print. Thank you Tony for telling us about the painting and I ordered a canvas copy from the National Gallery :-)

What an absolute joy. We had a wonderful experience at the Museum of Victorian Science. It was informative, interesting and fun and Tony was so passionate about his subject. The kids were enraptured. There is a low key magic here and the afternoon tea was lovely

This is honestly the most incredible and wonderful place I've ever visited. IT'S NOT A NORMAL MUSEUM THOUGH SO DON'T JUST TURN UP! This collection is in Tony's house and therefore you must book in advance - as far in advance as possible. Tony allows you into his space to see his astonishing collection at work. He talks to you about how things came about, and he asks a few questions too! But this isn't really a 'museum'. It's a chance to spend a couple of hours with a deeply fascinating (and delightfully eccentric) man, reveling in being part of his world for just a short time. There's also a fabulous afternoon tea on offer, where you'll meet the graceful, elegant Pat. An absolutely beautiful lady, warm and friendly, and very much worth sitting and chatting to in her own right. I would pay Tony and Pat just to sit and hear their stories. They don't make folk like these two any more. They're a vanishing breed - and the world will be poorer for their loss.

What a fabulous place, full of charm from a bygone era and proper experiments that bring all the pieces of equipment to life, what a great way to learn something new. Tony was such a great tour guide and Pat's delicious tea half way through was so personal. They are such a nice couple who share this amazing slice of history in their own home. You have to go and experience this yourself.

Wonderful way to spend 2 hours. Tony and Pat were very welcoming and we had a fun and informative time. After 22 years I think they have got it right. If you want something very different this is it!

Sunday 21st January 2024: A completely unique experience with the most warm, knowledgable, engaging and passionate people. A 2 hour demonstration of Victorian scientific inventions and discoveries with Tony, with a tea and cakes break midway through with Tony and lovely wife Pat. The whole thing was very sweet and charming and a million miles away from the kind of cynical, branded, commercialised formulaic 'experiences' that are so prolific these days. We loved it! A proper hidden gem! What a wonderful two hours spent with Tony. His passion and enthusiasm is infectious and I wish school had been the same as I might have taken more in! Pat was a wonderful host too and provided us with delicious coffee and a selection of cakes which were yummy! Thoroughly recommend a visit here if you get the chance!

We absolutely loved coming here and we learnt so much. The laboratory is a plethora of equipment that are like pieces of art in their own right and some uniquely made to enhance your experience. Tony and Pat made us feel so welcome and it was lovely to have tea and cake before the second part of whizz bangs and pops.

An electrifying deep-dive into Victorian science with live demonstrations - mesmerising and amazing. Incredibly friendly, and hospitable lovely tea and cakes served half way through.

What a little gem!! To be welcomed into Tony and Pat's home with such warmth was lovely. The museum is a joy and clearly a labour of love very well curated by Tony who is superbly knowledgeable about the vintage and reproduction pieces of equipment he has collected. The refreshments during the interval were tasty and well accompanied by chat with both Pat and Tony. A wonderful find for any science or history buff or even if you just want to see electricity and explosions at work!! Brilliant, absolutely loved it. If school science was like this many more would take it up!!
