Very nice museum to visit. Lots of items and detailed history of world War 2. It took me about 2 hours to finish the tour of the museum. Would highly recommend to anyone that love history. Bathrooms were very clean and the snack bar was reasonably priced.

One of the best museums I've ever been to. A short and concise presentation of the events leading up to World War 2, interesting and very vivid photos and videos from the battlefields, a heart-wrenching section that described the persecution of the Jews. A museum that leaves you speechless and sick to your stomach because of all the horrors that happened back then. The presentation of D-day events is also excellent, offering an excellent base for visiting these beaches in Normandy. Thank you for this outstanding exhibition - in memory and an important reminder!🕊️

This is one of the most detailed war museums I have ever visited, on par with the Imperial War Museum in London. There are several sections: World War Two, D-Day, the Cold War, General Richter's War Bunker and two cinemas showing short films about the Battle of Normandy and the history of Europe 1900-1991. The Second World War section is enormous, with lots of small display cases and plenty of information. I would say that this museum isn't filled with many actual objects. Mostly, there are photographs, films and extracts from books and letters complemented by the information on the walls. The information is in French, with around 60% translated into English and 40% into German. The WWII area is split into smaller sections, following the war chronologically. There is a very sobering Holocaust section. Some of the footage and information should have a content warning, and could be distressing for children too. The bunker is sparse but interesting and the two films worth watching. I didn't visit the Cold War section because I'd already been wandering around the other sections for four hours!

Great and educative places with loads of informations linked with real world war items! Cold war history is available aswell! Loads of cinema possible too! ~20&entry but worth it!

This museum is massive with plenty to see and read up on. There is plenty of parking and toilets on all levels. Staff were polite and friendly and explained where to start in the museum. The cafe was open up stairs with plenty of food and drink to choose from. Make sure you go out the back and see the bunker then the American garden.

In this part of Normandy, it seems like there's a D-Day museum in every town, but this seems like the one not to miss. The largest exhibit tells the story of WW2. I knew a lot about the war already, but these exhibits were excellent, and it was interesting to see it from a French point of view. Other exhibits tell the story of the landings and the battle for Normandy, the Cold War, and a bunker on site that was a German HQ. There was also a special post-war art exhibit when I visited.

Really powerful place to visit if you are seeing some of the D-day places. Its incredibly detailed in documenting the lead up to WW2 as well as all parts of it including live footage of the D-day landings. Also a whole section on the Cold War and a 360 experience of 20th century world and major events- an important testament to what the world went through

We came here not sure what to expect. It was a fascinating museum, covered all aspects of the build up to the second world war through to the cold war. We spent about 4/5 hours here. The translations were good in both English and German. All the information on the walls was translated, only some of the info cards in exhibits were not. The food was also reasonably priced and of good quality. There is a bunker experience which was also interesting, although with young children who might be scared of the dark maybe a little intimidating. We took a 4 month old and it was well equipped, a good baby changing room as well as very buggy accessible (there were a few reviews saying your weren't allowed to bring a buggy, but that wasn't the case). I could come back and spend another 4/5 hours reading more, but I was aware of the audience I had brought with me so didn't push my luck.

While the staff was very kind and helpful and the subject matter extremely important, I was not impressed by this museum. The building itself is very beautiful and very large but there isn’t much to see on the inside. Most of what you do see consists of printed images, signs, and mini films. For 19€ the entrance I expected more. Because of Covid, the bunker, the restaurant, and the gardens were closed and yet still we still had to pay full price. I do not recommend the audio guide (4€50!) there’s so much to read and watch that it’s too much.

It is a fantastic museum if you're interested in the second world war including the events of D-day. The entire timeline is clearly explained. It's incredibly moving and sobering (I found it difficult to walk through the section related to the concentration camps). We spent almost 5 hours walking through it all.

Nice museum with a bunch of exhibits spanning pre WW2 to the cold war. There is a photography exhibit above the store that is interesting as well. Watch out for the black benches that blend into the floor. They are waiting to ambush you.

Very moving museum. If you want to learn a large amount of information about WW2 then this is the place. The exhibits are set up In logical order and make things very clear. Beware the Holocaust exit areas are quite disturbing. Not for kids under 16.

Impressive and disturbing exhibitions. Such a dark charter of our history. Time to learn from it! The entrance fee is quite expentsive, but its worth it. There are plenty toilets spread throughout the building. You can visit the exhibition with a wheelchair. Even the bunker ist accessible with a lift. Disabled visitors get in for free.

Beautiful square, lovely to take the pictures. Plenty of parking nearby. The nearby streets were filled with restaurants and bars with low grade food. (Kebab/ creperie, bars, etc) Great for students probably. We have popped in one beautiful store and bought some great souvenirs for ourselves, including calvados. Owner was really friendly.

This place, is a monument telling the story of Caen, WW2 and humans. Listen to the stories and voices in the hall, remainings of the a time that might be far, but still close to us. There are different halls and yards in the Abbay, so do not rush and enjoy the peacefulness of the place. There is also a gallery at the end of the visiting route which you can also enjoy. Wheelchair accessible.

Abbey founded by William the Conqueror, which has been damaged and rebuilt over the centuries. The neighbouring church, holding the burial place of said William (although only his thigh bone, as during the revolution his grave was desecrated).

Inexpensive self-guided tour, not a long visit, but worth it if you are in the area. Make sure to visit the church next door (not part of the self tour), but is free and the entrance is sort of hidden in an alleyway.

William the Conquerers tomb is located here so basically it is where he is buried. Only his thigh bone remains, during the hundred years war his bones were scattered around Caen and only his thigh bone was saved. The Abbey was built in the 11th Century and is incredibly impressive. It is some structure. It was built on request from the Pope at the time who agreed to forgive William from marrying his cousin five times removed as long as two abbeys were built. This is one and the other houses Matilda's (Williams wife) body. If you like history this is a must see.

St Entiene church is next door but can't walk between them - separate entrances. Entrance to the Abbey is in the City Hall building, glass doors in the middle. Worth a visit. Informative exhibit on how civilians survived WWII bombings. Grave of William the Conqueror is in the church.

What a great unexpected find. Many other tourist locations are packed and this had the history and area almost to ourselves. Also has a brief history location and artifacts. They also had a guided tour and a very inexpensive self guided tour to just walk around. Don't forget the cathedral next door. Can be a bit hard to find as it's a red door around the curve next to the main street. The front desk attendant for the town hall was very nice and spoke English too! Strongly recommend if in the area.

This is not the place where William the Conqueror rest in peace. It costs five euros to enter but it’s not so attractive, in my opinion.

Visited on a Tuesday morning in late November and it was fantastic. While restoration was being done, you still had a wonderful view of the nave and side aisles. So happy to see the tomb of William the Conqueror. Wonderful experience!

Free and wheelchair/ stroller accessible park. It has multiple levels which are accessible via stairs or via detour. Great entertainment for kids as well. Our 3 and 7 year old sons enjoyed themselves. Very nice and interesting plants as well. Toilets are available in 3 locations throughout the Parc. We spent 3 hours easily.

Peaceful and beautiful park with animals, flowers, roses, greenery, fountains and views. Car park right next to it, there is a mini golf and toilets also. We really enjoyed and think if we would like close by this place would be our reading, chilling spot for sure.

Great park to learn about the environmental issues. The whole park has been built on a waste dump site. Now, it is covered by trees, roses and vegetation, but below it is full of plastic bottles, glass, cans. There is a great demonstration area about the history, and a cross section of the waste below. Otherwise, the park offers a great panorama view on Caen, has a little farm with animals, unfortunately no direct access to the animals for feeding and touching. There is a nice playground, and several tracks for walking. The car traffic nearby is high at one side of the park, but inside it ok. There no protected bike lanes to reach it, but at least there is a bike parking in front of it. If you are visiting Caen as a tourist, I think this is a must see experience to learn about current environmental issues. And a great place for children to run around, play, and see some animals.

Hard to believe the park is an old rubbish dump. Anyway, really nice place now for a walk or a picknick. Many interesting plants to see, but most signs are in French only. Some areas not the best maintained. If it wasn't for the not so nice "zoo" area with a cow, donkey, sheeps, goats and a couple of pigs the park would have got 4 stars.

Hugely impressed with this park. Hadn't realised it's origins until I was reading about how the site was previously the council dump. Absolutely worth a visit with the kids. Many different things to see... including dipping your feet into the fountain to cool down. The views are great and the gardens are very well maintained.

A very beautiful place. You have the choice between three tracks👣. It depends on how much time you have. There you will find different plants 🪴 and trees 🌳 several kinds of domestic animals. And a very very beautiful view. It is superb 👌

If you are like us don’t have many days to spend in Normandy, spare this visit for another location instead. This is like walking through a building site. You are trying to tell yourself that the site is 1000 years old, but nothing can help to really believe it. The castle looks better from outside then inside. Museum was good to visit. But some signs there were not translated to English. Everyone under 26 was free.

You can see some of the best view of the Caen on top the castle! Unfortunately most part of the castle has been destroyed but still its a charm. Take your time and wander around the castle. Also you can visit the museums here. Wheelchair is accessible and there are elevator at some parts, although it still can be hard to reach the elevator. Easily accessible by public transportation!

Beautiful and majestic historical castle in Caen, Normandy. Built on a hill in 1060, by William of Normandy, who later conquered England, the castle walls provides an excellent panoramic view of the city on all sides. The castle walls are free to walk, though it involves some stairs. Highly recommended to visit when you are in Caen.

There is a lot of construction going in at the moment and it is due to.open in Full in 2025 but still.well worth a visit to walk over the ramparts and immerse in the fascinating history.

Free parking space for a visit to the castle, museums or the city. It is less than one kilometer to L'Abbaye-aux-Hommes. There is a clean public toilet near the parking (but not open all the time). You can access some castle walls for free and have a nice panoramic view over the city.

The castle is massive and the museum probably quite interesting, but we could not check this out ourselves. We've been passing through there on our way to Mont Saint-Michel in early October. The daily break should be from 1230-1330, but we got there just before 1200 and everything was closed shut. This includes information, museum and the cafe. There's also no public toilet anywhere on the premise so unfortunately we could not wait there for another 1,5h.

Just OK. Lots of construction work currently ongoing, but seems like all the sites are available. Note that starting in Sept, the museums and exhibitions on-site are closed on Mondays (shame on us for not checking ahead).

Great ancient castle walls and facility. It is a current excavation site with restoration work, so it looks like construction but it is also preservation and still learning about the site. There is a very detailed exhibit in one of the large halls showing their findings and what they are planning on doing. There are a couple great museums on site, bathrooms/toilets and a place to grab some food and drinks. The views are fun and can see the city from the ramparts or overlook the castle remains with an easy climb. Strongly recommend if in the area. Wasn't too busy.

Beautiful Roman Abbaye in Caen, very much worth the stop in through. Commissioned by Queen Mathilda, wife of William the Conqueror, this (and the Abbeye des Hommes) has a fascinating history. Commissioned essentially to assuage the Pope and religious community regarding their too close marriage (cousins several times removed I believe), Queen Mathilda is nevertheless buried here, at the centre of the church.

Historically fascinating, but not much to see compared to Aux-Hommes down the road. However, I highly recommend coming around 11:30am. The sunlight through the stained glass in the back is incredible, a bright romantic pink. Currently on exhibition around the tomb of Mathilde are embroideries of female saints; curiously missing is Joan, who I thought for sure would merit a place.

Founded around 1060 by Matilda of Flanders, William the Bastard's spouse, the Abbaye-aux-Dames (Women's Abbey) was consecrated on 18th June 1066 and dedicated to the Holy Trinity.

Abbaye aux Dames as it's known is one of the oldest churches in France founded by William I the Conquerer build in Romanesque style. His wife Queen Matilda of Flanders (1031–1083) is buried in the church.

Lots of beautiful Renaissance art and some modern art. Inexpensive to visit and in same location as Musee des Beaux Arts and Chateau (castle) de Caen.

It's a decent history museum. A little bit covering pre-history, Roman, medieval, to modern. Descriptions in French and English. Part of a larger site, which includes the old fortress ruins.

The area is a large with lack of directions in my opinion. The museum itself is not the building I had seen in this google map spot. At the door, the direction says the museum is in "Salles de Rampart". We went there, and paid 11 euros for two persons. It was not really a museum. Instead it was like a short exhibition, suitable for children. I don't know if the main museum was in reconstruction or we were in the wrong place. The reception told us about fine art museum too, but I think I did the right thing not to spend more money. Overall, it was not really like any other museums. For example, interactive information about history of the city or region. One more thing: These places must be tourist friendly. The information about the paintings and other things were all in French. Do they expect that a foreign visitor that comes there for some days has to first learn French and then visit the place? But in the WC, they have written in French+English that please leave the bathroom clean as you have come in. Really interesting!

Normally I don't visit on site museums but I decided to visit this one and was not disappointed . There was lots to see and also much more than simple art. Lots to discover about the history of Normandy and William the Conqueror in particular.

What a disappointment. I acutually like history, and normally I enjoy these types of museums, but man.. what a boring place. And I really don't get it?? The museum is placed in a massive and impresive piece of history, but as soon as you enter the castle, they seem to forget all about it. This is not as much about the museum as it about the whole experience of visiting the castle. I would have loved to learned more about Wilhelm the Conqueor but there is nothing ?? We had no idea what we were looking at, and the place left everything to our imagination. We visted both the Normandic museum and the Viking exhibition, and both surffered from the same mistakes - no, or almost no, information in either English or Spanish.. and I get it, we are in France, but come on ? Nothing for the international guests ? The Normandic museum is everthing I hate about museums: there are no stories being told, no interactions for the guests.. nothing.. Again I like history, but it was underwhelming and flat out boring.. There are so much rich history in this area, and somehow gets wasted here...

We visited this museum which also included the exhibition about the Normans and Vikings in the artillery tower, thought the Museum of Normandy was the better of the two. Recommend visiting if you're in Caen and seeing the castle.

The receptionist was the sweetest ! Even though I lost my ticket she gave me another one ! The museum was interesting to see, takes about an hour max, and has some very interesting archeological objects found in Normandy.

Having isoted the rouen fine arts museum earlier in the week, this I found to be a poor 2nd. Paintings were OK, but nothing really stood out. The people who worked there were over fussy and I found the concrete monolith that was the gallery somewhat uncomfortable for the art it was portraying. School groups while there were also loud and out of place for the gallery. I would recommend it but don't put your hopes to high, the buildings of the castle around it are as if not more interesting

Interesting castle with multiple museums inside (one for fine arts, one for local history, and one for temporary exhibitions). The museum covers all periods from 15th century to contemporary with four floors (some are hidden, look carefully at the map). 1 or 2 hours for the full visit.

I love this museum. If your agre below 29 years old is free but if your age above it, the entrance fee is €3, 5. I visited with friend and the have a lot of collections and it amazed me bc some of their collection since 1500 years ago

Extensive collection of classical modern art. Interesting cubist painting. Beautiful temporary exhibition. Difficult layout of rooms and confusing plan. Direction signs would help, including one to the exit. Nice bookshop. Toilets need more attention and are smelly.

We stopped by Caen on the way back from Omaha for dinner. We passed the church which was beside the wall of the Caen castle. Half of the tower was lit with blue light, giving it an eerie look, almost like the light was leaking from inside the tower. It was interesting to look at while waiting at the stop lights. It is quite different from other churches at night. We didn't go in but it would have been interesting to see if the blue light was also used inside.

St Peter's church in Caen is a great religious construction built in 13th to 16th century. It's near the castle. Important historical events took place in the church.

Nice to pop in while in Caen. Check the hours if you want to go inside. It's under renovation.

A very nice woman spent 30 minutes with us, searching for bus routes and timetables, trying desperately to get us to where we wanted to go. When we finally decided to give up, she recommended another area outside of Caen that had exactly what we were looking for and was easily accessible by public transport. We would have been lost without her!! I love cannot recommend this place highly enough. This tourism office completely saved our trip.

Free access to the park, (botanical) gardens and greenhouse with tropical and exotic plants. There is also a giant sequoia tree (near the botanical institute). Perfect place for a picnic or a moment of rest. It is a short walk from Caen Castle (less than a kilometer) or from city center (bit more than a kilometer). We enjoyed our visit here and recommend it.

Very cool garden, inside and out. The interior greenhouse is very well designed to feel like you are meandering through climate zones, and the educational gardens outside have a wide variety. I saw that they are keeping poison sumac inside a cage; this is funny to me as an American who lives were poison sumac is common. What a great unexpected find. Many other tourist locations are packed and this had the history and area almost to ourselves. Also has a brief history location and artifacts. They also had a guided tour and a very inexpensive self guided tour to just walk around. Don't forget the cathedral next door. Can be a bit hard to find as it's a red door around the curve next to the main street. The front desk attendant for the town hall was very nice and spoke English too! Strongly recommend if in the area.
