Being short on time we favoured the 6 minute funivia ride to the steep climb - and marvelled at the May 15 historic race (Corsa dei Ceri) that sees teams of Gubbio residents running the steep climb with "ceri" weighing around 300kg each (photographed) from the town centre to the Basilica. The Basilica houses the remains of Saint Ubaldo, an impressive presence to be seen with your own eyes.

It’s a great (short) drive to get up here. Encourage you to if you have transport and near by the area. The church is quite small and not impressive from the inside but there are a few relics there worth noting, and there is a restaurant there which is recommended on a day that is not too windy. Overall: More like 3* than 4. Close to multiple bell tours which you can hear in the room. Personally enjoyed it but some people might be disturbed by it. Location is on the middle level of Gubbio, no parking nearby - you need to walk to the furnival car park which you need to pay if there are no free spots available. Driving through the 1 way system is difficult to reach the hotel and their instructions are not clear. The hill and cobble road means that some people might find it difficult to walk around. I probably will not go back to Gubbio but if I did I would not stay here.

A real mix of rooms, from curved stone ceilings and wood beams, to a little more modern (re Italy's standards at least). Bathrooms are old, inconvenient showers and tubs (dangerous) with slow running hot water, par for the course when choosing heritage accomodation. Rooms are small, a bit dark and rather uncomfortable for lounging about. If you want more creature comforts, character hotels are not for you. Entry to Hotel Relais Ducale is a bit odd. Look for a small door beside a table with a red tablecloth, a chess board, two coffee cups and a policemans cap, collectables from a scene shot for TV years ago. Enter into a small bar, and the bar maid collects your baggage and carries it upstairs to reception. Elevators are small, tiny in fact, two passangers at a time, plus one carry on per person. Loved the experience but the hotel failed in comfort and services. Too expensive. Better options elsewhere in Gubbio.

We didn’t stay here, just stopped for lunch. My son’s hamburger & chicken cutlet were awful. The worst food we have encountered during our 13 day stay. My husband & I had panini’s which were much better. Stick to simple. Beer & water were expensive and a sharp contrast to the Marche where we are staying.

Stayed 2 nights and had the most amazing time! The room was wonderful and people who work here were so kind helpful and made the place special. If we are ever near here again, we know where we will be staying! LOVE this place!!!

It's a lovely and cozy hotel at Gubbio. I stayed there 4 nights as I was attending a conference in the beautiful town of Gubbio. The rooms are decent sized. They have 3 different buildings within the same hotel which are interconnected. Had breakfast at the hotel and no other meal there. Breakfast was decent. Lots of cakes, cold meat, fruits , boiled egg and egg to order, breads and cereals etc. Staff is very polite and very helpful. I will certainly stay at the same hotel when I go back to Gubbio with family in future. Well from what I read that also accept small pets. One important point to remember is related to parking. The town has free parking at certain places for hotel guests so remember to inform the hotel that you are driving in and they will advice accordingly.
