This is a fantastic place to spend a few hours, or indeed, the whole day. 3 cabins are available to hire, to use as a base if you wish. So, so many wonderful sculptures to admire in a beautiful lakeside setting. Ample seating and a selection of sunny or shaded locations. Fantastic gallery. Great cafe and take away shop. Excellent toilets. Booking in advance only. Plentiful parking. Please note: No children or dogs (due to lots of deep water).

Even though we picked a wet day it was still very enjoyable, we took a leisurely walk around the lakes, the sculptures and landscape was amazing. A few of the grass paths in the garden were fenced off because of the rain but there was other paths we could use so we could still see all the sculptures. All the staff we met were really nice and friendly. Will definitely return but hopefully pick dryer day

Being a bit cynical of pretentious art installations, I was really surprised by how much I loved this place. So much thought has gone into the placement of the sculptures around the lakes and the design of the gardens, it's an amazing realisation of someone's vision. You've got to sit on every bench or seating area to soak up the view, so much so that the 3 hours we spent there went way too fast. I feel constantly stressed with the pressures of family and work, but for that short time, I was relaxed and could just simply enjoy being somewhere utterly serene. Well worth a visit!

A lovely walk made interesting by a variety of sculptures along the way; there are picnic places along the route set in pretty locations.The site is well maintained. There is wheelchair access to some of the lakeside walk, it is challenging for those with reduced mobility. Smaller copies of the sculptures can be found in an on site gallery. There are also a nice cafe and shop on the site and good essential services such as parking and toilets.

Visited today after friends recommended it. They were right, a real gem in the Dorset countryside. It's so beautiful and tranquil. Fantastic sculptures artistically located around the lakes look in any direction, and you find a new sight to feast on. Great café and lovely staff. Well done.

Brilliant place, really enjoyed this. Some fantastic sculptures in a natural setting, one of the sculptures was called Time To Reflect, upside down words in a lake, the reflection creating to phrase. Exactly right, a beautiful place to spend a few hours reminding yourself of the beauty of the natural world.

We had a lovely time at Sculpture by the Lakes. The lake walks are flat and easy to follow with surprises around every corner. There are some beautiful places to sit and eat or just relax. The shop had a good selection of locally made products which is always great to see.

Tranquil sculpture park with beautiful scenery, pristine lakes and plenty of seating areas to just pause, absorb and relax. We visited in early May, which might be why the park was relatively quiet, hardly anyone else around. We were surprised to find that for a reasonable cost you can hire a private area of the park for the day. We didn’t need too but will consider in the future if want to make a day of it and take along a picnic. This place is not for rushing, take your time, enjoy the sculptures, take in the sounds of nature and welcome the break from the normal rush of modern living. If you fancy a bit to eat, there’s a cafe serving breakfast and lunch, or take away coffee and cakes can be purchased at the shop. We had a slice a caramel brownie (which was delicious) and a latte for around £6.

This place is so calming and simply stunning. We were very lucky with the weather and it was a fantastic experience. The grounds are well maintained, facilities are new and clean, and the artworks are beautiful and engaging. Nature is in full bloom, and there's plenty of wildlife.

Fabulous place to visit although best to book tickets in advance. The main attractions are two beautiful lakes and a swiftly-running river around which are sited some 135 stunning works of art. The level footpath meanders around the lakes, bordered by shrubs, greenery and flowers, and interspersed by amazing spectacles of a variety of sculptures set to enhance the scene. Seats are scattered throughout for visitors to rest and admire the glorious views. We booked for the afternoon entry only and enjoyed lunch in the restaurant first, and at the end of the afternoon, had a browse around the craft/farm shop. I thoroughly recommend the place and praise all the staff, workers, gardeners, organizers there - full marks!

Really nice relaxing place, plenty of seating to take a sit back and enjoy the wild life, the lake or the sculptures. On site cafe serves amazing tomato and sausage rolls. Really friendly informative staff.

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit today the tranquility of the walk round the lakes and sculptures made a very enjoyable morning. Stopping and enjoying the views as went round. Followed by lunch at the cafe. And a browse round the shop .toilets and free parking.

Nice place to visit during good weather, the grounds are not suitable for people with reduced mobility, the cafe was really busy. Isn't open on Sundays for some reason. The souvenir shop was good, very pricey and the till assistant in the take away food section had a very bad attitude. The sculptures were great, lots of good photo opportunities and the area is very nice.

A great place for a gentle walk with lots of wonderful sculptures, some more creatively named than others. Lots of spots to sit down and enjoy your time in nature. They have a great little cafe onsite, which offers a good selection of food and drinks. The gift shop / deli offers a lot of great giftable items, and it can be hard to walk away without buying everything!

A truly magical and tranquil place. Beautiful sculptures, plenty to see, went in late January, very quiet, light kept changing with cloud and some sunshine. Staff friendly and helpful. Thoroughly recommend.

Such a lovely place to explore, particularly loved walking through the Birch and Pine tree areas, and view the Artwork, so many nice people working here and so much to see. Very nicely kept and with excellent access all around, most definitely we shall come again in the Spring.

This property is a bit of a hidden gem. We didn't see any signs until we were literally at the car park but it is a beautiful place. All the staff we met - ticket office, cafe and in the house - were fantastic, professional, friendly and helpful. We used our Historic Houses membership to get in and started touring the grounds. A wet April weekend probably wasn't ideal but you could see the potential in the views and vistas and in another month or so the gardens will be fabulous. We only saw one other couple there so it was certainly a peaceful visit. The house itself was, frankly, magnificent. I usually avoid the interior of houses as I find them dull but this was a masterpiece of displaying a home in an engaging way. Each room had an information board that was actually interesting to read, concise and informative. There was a well laid out route that took the over two floors and quite a few rooms, displaying furniture and decor from the Tudor period to the 20th century. We finished our visit with lunch in the cafe which was rather fabulous too. All in all a lovely, relaxing and informative visit - thank you.

We attended for an Art Exhibition showing in the Long Gallery upstairs. This was my first visit to the house. What a fantastic garden… We intend to return and see the buildings and gardens at a much more leisurely pace…

Lovely historic manor house set in formal gardens. The house is mostly self guided with information boards in each room. There were a couple of guides who were very ready to answer our questions and elaborate with extra interesting stories. Lots of family history from the 1400s to modern times. Don't miss the formal gardens. There's a different style in each part with unusual features. Also there's an excellent cafe with table service. It's a step up from the usual cafe. We loved the cakes. And there's a good number of Chargers for electric cars. We enjoyed our visit, and would recommend allowing 3 hours for the visit, All good 😎👍👍👍👍

Visited Athelhampton as part of a pop up market event. Beautiful gardens (dog friendly). Needed a bit of strength to push wheelchairs and my sons electric one became grounded a couple of times. During weekdays there is (at present) a two for one entrance fee promotion. We didn't visit the house this time because of the wheelchair users but I have visited previously and it was interesting. Great cafe selling huge cakes and some of the best cheesey chips ever!

This was a fantastic opportunity to see a perfectly preserved Tudor Manor house. It has absolutely beautiful gardens and they are huge. After spending an hour or two wandering the garden we had lunch in the cafe and it was excellent. The Manor house itself is extraordinarily well preserved and the highlight for me was the hammer beam roof in the great hall. Budget at least four hours for the whole experience. I am sure any history or garden enthusiats will love it.

Great place to visit, different rooms presented in various eras of the house's history. Lovely gardens with clear route to follow or just go freestyle. Giant cream tea too! What more could you ask?

The house is a funny mix of old and modern rooms but I liked it. The gardens are very well kept and a joy to walk through. It is worth to visit when you are in the area.

This is such a cool house! I could have spent all day here exploring. The house and gardens are gorgeous. There is lots of parking and a gift shop.

We were so lucky with the Weather at the end of October. The Tudor House was full of history and the Gardens didn't disappoint also, even without Flowers blooming. We definitely go back in the spring when everything will be more colourful, I am sure. There even was a display of ( old time Dining ) and as you can see in the little video, the Actors did a good job.

An absolutely brilliant day out. The house is full of fascinating nooks and corners (my favourite room was the library and billiard room). And the gardens are beautiful. If you have kids with you, challenge them to find the secret staircase … (oh, and great cafe, too!)

A beautiful, relaxed visit. The staff were both welcoming and professional. Nothing was too much trouble. Ruby was particularly charming whilst dining, a real credit to the estate. The food was of excellent quality and featured many locally produced ingredients. I very much enjoyed the apple juice produced from Athelhampton's own orchard. The gardens were lovely, calming, and good for the soul. I look forward to returning in a different season to discover more of the many intricate details and history. Just wonderful. The highlight of our Dorset weekend. Beautiful house and gardens. The guide was so helpful and keen to share her knowledge of the house and medieval history. There is lots to look around, including and art gallery. The restaurant was excellent. We especially enjoyed the roast parsnip and apple soup.

We loved Athelhampton, from the delicious food, prettily prepared in the cute indoor cafe to the peaceful, beautifully maintained grounds. The house itself is a truly wondrous place and has a lovely eerie vibe. The rooms aren't roped off (there is one and the top floor of the house), and it really does mean you can fully immerse yourself in the history of the house. I could spend days there. Didn't see any ghosts, but I will definitely return. It feels like one of those places you could just continuously explore. The staff were so friendly, helpful and full of knowledge. We were shown one of the secret passage ways, it was so interesting and really added to the mystery this place so obviously holds. I took my ten year old daughter, and we both absolutely loved it.

One of our favorite stops on our trip. Athelhampton House and Gardens is a lovely spot to tour. What makes it unique is that you are encourage to have a seat in the grand rooms and really get a feel for the place. The docents were very knowledgeable and if you ask, will show what might have been a secret door to hide priests. Set on the Piddle river, which was very small, it is a lovely spot to stroll the gardens. I loved all of the history and the connections to novelist Thomas Hardy. Very well cared for and seeing some of the new antiques, including a newly acquired medieval armor chest was really fascinating.

Initially booked Athelhampton for Sunday Lunch with friends. We loved our Roast Dinner and finished off by walking through the house and gardens. We loved that experience too. Giles Keating can be proud of what he has achieved to date.

Our first visit to Athelhampton. We were not disappointed. The staff were lovely, and were really attentive and informative. My one complaint would be lack of signage. We didn't have time to look round the gardens properly, but will definitely be back.

An amazing gem of a house with such interesting things to see. Great use of technology to add to the experience and the “green” policy is inspiring. We went on Easter Monday and there was a lovely lady guiding. Would highly recommend.

Really enjoyed going round the house and garden. Historically interesting interiors. Amazing that the current owner has managed to use solar power to reduce the heating bill! Loved the garden. Cafe was good too.

Excellent cafe at the newly refurbished Dorset Museum. Varied vegetarian / vegan options outnumbering meat dishes. Good coffee and friendly staff. Wheelchair/ mobility scooter accessible but busy at lunch time. Recommended.

The building is superbly renovated, and the museum has an amazing array of exhibits. There's art, history and artefacts a plenty. Plus very friendly volunteer staff, a nice café and well laid out and explained exhibits. Recommended.

Evan though children are free adult cost is high but you can come back as often as you like in a year..lots of interaction and a great place on a wet day,very interesting lots of local history amazing mosaics.

Dorset Museum is an exceptional venue, both for temporary exhibitions, and for the quality and range of the permanent exhibits housed within a beautifully renovated and refurbished space. The quality of light and space is wonderful. The café is charming, serving light lunches, cakes etc, and the gift shop stocks beautiful cards. Delightful 👍

First visit since the renovation works, what a change! The new galleries are very interesting and it's now very family and disability friendly. There's even a quiet room if autistic visitors need a break. And it's the only place in the UK where you can walk on Roman mosaics!

I spent a couple of hours here looking at the natural history section more specifically although the people I was with were very impressed with the other section. Kevani was very impressive. The shop was rather disappointing but the exhibitions were great. Especially loved walking over the roman mosaics.

Fabulous! The outside entrance doesn’t do it justice. Very well designed and curated, and a very friendly welcome in the cafe. Loved the Muntz, Frink and Hardy exhibit. £14 for 1 yr access! I am definitely coming back.

I hadn't been here before today recent £12million (?) Improvements but wow, it certainly is a very impressive museum now. There is everything from prehistoric to modern, with fascinating and often interactive exhibits. There are still more exhibits being prepared for display, so will vary each time you visit. We bought annual passes and will be back soon!

I took my two children aged 2 and 4 here today. They could only manage a few hours but as under 5’s are free it was no matter. We concentrated on the interactive displays and they loved it! There was also a pebble painting activity which they both loved too. The museum is clean, well planned and the exhibitions are great. We would have spent longer there if little one would have lasted! We had brunch at the cafe which was also really tasty. Really recommend, I think the kids will get more out of it at age 7+ but they weren’t bored and the few hours went quickly!

What a phenomenal museum. There is so much to see. The geological section is wonderful, with some excellent hands-on exhibits. The Victorian Hall with its Roman mosaics is stunning. There is a very full and detailed Hardy exhibition and some first rate archeological artefacts on the first floor. The Frink collection on the upper floor is stunning. Worth every penny!

At £14.50 per adult and being The Museum of Dorset I was expecting so much more. Took us about an hour to go round the whole place. It’s a lovely building with a lot of empty space in it. What exhibits there are are good with some interactive ones. Shop was pretty sub standard compared to other county museums. The museum has so much potential but sadly not worth your time or money at the moment

This is an excellent Museum, with things of interest for children and adults. Excellent place for cold days and the days that are too hot. There is an awful lot to see and the guide book rely only mentions the rooms in the museum but nothing about there continence. Not much in the shop at the end so gifts are for kids only. The Coffey shop needs a mention as it is so good. There sandwiches are not to be missed.

This is the best local museum outside of London by a country mile. It's much bigger than it looks on the outside. Inside its a great blend of modern and historic with exceptionally well placed and modelled displays. The ticket price is actually very cheap considering its an annual ticket. Its great to see the history of Dorset from the natural world to its best exports in art and culture. For me the Hardy exhibition is sublime.

Very nice coffee shop in the town center. Good variety of food and nice coffee with soya and oats choice for alternative milk. Good service and cleanliness. Beautifil decoration and painting. Lovely old pictures on the walls.

The museum is local for us, it's a great place to visit with a good range of local history, As it was half term and raining, there were lots of school children who loved the Jurrasic coast and dinosaur exhibits. There also was an Elisabeth Frink exhibition on which we really enjoyed.

Recommend place to visit. Some wonderful displays, it's recently clearly had a large amount of investment placed into the whole infrastructure and displays and is vast with a smaller frontage on the high street which is TARDIS like when you get inside. Great art displays for local artists in Dorset, wonderful Thomas hardy area with something for everyone. The history of Dorset is fascinating starting with the flint axes , bronze age. Roman exhibition is brilliant, lots of fascinating local history as Dorchester was a Roman outpost from the first century. Roman mosaics looked beautiful and were prolific. There was the remains of vikings who landed locally and were massacred by decapitation, grisly. Lots of other local history information too. Dinosaurs excavated in dorset were exhibited very clearly and there was the huge skull of a long extinct pleasiosaurus , it was truly dramatic and they had plenty of interesting information relating to this fossilized sea creature. The cost of entry was very reasonable for the interest inside. The cafe was expensive and I chose to go to a local bakery for lunch instead.

Visited on the 1st of April 2024 with my partner and our children. The museum manages to pack a large and impressive collection in to a user friendly space. It will take a good couple of hours to look around and more if you wish. There's something of interest for everyone here. Entry price is very reasonable and children go free.

We visited the museum as my little boy whos 6 is completely obsessed with dinosaurs and has been for many years with extensive knowledge of these times even at his age. As a family of 4, 2 adults, 1 child and my elderly father we found it to be a bit pricey and wasn't clear if it was very wheelchair accessible to a 2nd floor. Charging £10 for an adult, £5? for a child it was rather expensive. The lady did give us discount for my elderly relative however it still seemed alot of money for the actual size if the museum with limited amount of exhibitions. We were given a small trial for my little boy to do and was awarded with a certificate once completed which was a nice touch for the dinosaur enthusiasts. I suppose and suspect there may not be alot of council or public funding and post covid it quite possible hit hard times however lowering the fee or having the price more attractive and affordable for larger groups or families especially taking into consideration the cost of living rising like it is it may work out better long-term for the museum and its future as I suspect holiday makers this summer visiting my indeed be put off paying such alot of money for what it offers will definitely put people off visiting unfortunately. Offers, discounts on admissions should be considered especially during busier and during school holidays when families often have already been stung paying over the odds on accommodation due to the holidays. Just an idea....

Smaller than expected, lots of fibreglass models but enough real bones, fossils and facts to keep it interesting. Took about an hour to do in total including the quiz they have us on entry. Overall. Recommend

Fairly small but well thought out exhibits and models. Lots of Dino models and fossil skeletons. Kids get a fun quizz to complete along the way and rewarded with a certificate at the end.

Fairly small for what it is but a lot of information everywhere to read. Mainly for children who would enjoy it. It’s definitely not worth £12 per adult in my opinion but suppose they have to make there money somehow

Very impressive little museum located in central Dorchester. There was plenty of paid parking near by with just a short walk to the museum. The museum itself was full of fascinating objects and lots of information to learn. My kids love dinosaurs so were thrilled to visit and each got a certificate at the end for filling in the quiz as you go around. It was a little pricey considering how small it was but was worth visiting once. Takes around 1 hour to get around the whole place if you take your time.

It's small so the kids did not get bored. It needs a bit of an update. The game they got to find different info kept them entertained as well.

It is overpriced for what you get. Especially with smaller children which is what it first appears to be aimed at. Little interactive displays minus a sand table, nowhere to sit and rest, very tiny, a lot to read! The info is there and interesting but anyone under 10 gets bored within 30 minutes.

My wife and I took our four children aged between 3 and 11 and they all loved it. Amazing how much you can squeeze in the space. My grandparents who lived in Dorset took me here when I was around the same age - it was just as fun then. Check it out on the website first and see if it's what you/your family/friends etc would like - I would recommend it for a good family day trip.

Lovely idea and remember this as a kid but unfortunately nothing has been updated. The place feels really run down with many things being left broken and less interactive. Definitely needs some investment for the admission charges.

Had a great visit here. Good for kids and us 'oldies' alike. Very good explanations, well sign posted. So nice to see Mary Anning fully credited. And you are dog friendly....a big plus in my book.

Absolutely fantastic museum. This is the ideal place to take a child who is serious about their love of dinosaurs. My daughter absolutely loved every second of our 2.5 hours there, and so did I!

Don’t normally post poor reviews as businesses have enough of a hard time nowadays but unfortunately this attraction really needs to have a bit of a rethink. It is a small place stuffed full of Dino info…most of which youngsters don’t read or look at. More interactive things need to be added and emphasis on keeping the young ones enthralled with their beloved dinosaurs. 13pound per adult and not that much less per child for less than 30 mins which is what it took us is not something I can honestly recommend. Shame as could be much better. It’s in an old fashioned”museum” time warp and suitable for those who like reading and watching docs on screen. Sorry….

It was a lovely little museum for a windy and rainy day. It is a little pricy but we did spend just over an hour inside. We had a few interesting findings, and my 8 years old enjoyed it.

Good historical place for a hike.. Good views over Dorchester..... and peace from other people. Saw 1 person and many sheep today . Lol @ the folk expecting toilets, benches, refreshments, sideshows and actual castles this place isn't for you.

Lovely place for a walk, lots of route choices to discover with great views, silent surrounding, good parking area although quite small. A great Free morning out!

It's difficult to appreciate the scale of the earthworks until you get into the castle but when you do it makes you wonder at the effort that went into it. Its really interesting but don't expect to see a traditional castle and visit when the weather is good as there is no shelter or facilities.

Free carpark. Lovely walk all around. Be careful if have a dog as sheep all over. They have lots of lambs at present. Worth a walk around this historic site.

A great place for a walk and for talking in some local history. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on leads due to the numerous Ewes with their lambs. Very disappointed during my short visit to see someone ignoring the copious warning signs and still letting their dog run free. Really lost for words at how irresponsible some people can be!

We chose a really still, hot, day to walk the old earthworks and it was breezy up on the fort ridges...thankfully! The walk was a slightly steep climb upwards to reach the Fort...but once on the ridges it was very flat, well grassed and manageable. The walk is a clockwise walk and there are some interesting things to look out for. Like an old Roman temple and a disused well. It is really well preserved and has some informative signage. The walk was about 3.5 klm (2 miles). The views towards Dorchester and Poundbury were outstanding! You get a really good sense of what the iron age fort was like back in 370AD...before the Roman invasion.

Huge! Very impressive earthworks and amazing views all around. Good information on boards on site. A very tranquil spot with free parking. It'd definitely work a visit if you arenin the area.

Very nice views, some good history. Pretty simple walk, but beautiful wildlife.

A brisk yomp to the top for a good view of Dorchester and the surrounding countryside. Requires a certain level of effort and caution. Also, there's a lot of sheep. I mean a lot. Parking is easy enough. There are no other facilities at the site. The earthworks are very impressive in scale. Though treacherous by design. There are remains of a temple, barely an outline yet somehow announces its significance. Definitely worth the climb.

After a delay in the road due to a farmer moving his sheep (it was a bonus to my holiday experience, truth be told), it was an easy walk up a truly massive hill. The scale of the earthworks is a sight to behold. I would have liked more interpretive signs around the hill itself. I read about it before the visit, but I love to read about things whilst I am at sites. So read up before you go, otherwise it's still an enjoyable walk at an impressive structure, with spectacular views, with sheep to keep you company.

Extra to see the mummies. Not great for younger kids as a lot of reading. Nothing interactive. Great if you love Tutankhamen! Fab recreation of the discovery of the tomb, ante-chamber and burial chamber. You wouldn’t spend too long here so a bit pricey for the size/content.

I ltook my nine year old grandson because he likes any thing to do with Egypt. I wasn't to keen after reading some reviews but we went. Don't take any notice of those reviews, l don't know what they expected it is a fantastic display. Most things are copies but they look like the real thing. I've been to Egypt and seen it for real. Quite a lot of reading, take your time and watch the videos. The only thing l would say is the price for an adult is OK but l think it's too much for children. You need to get children interested, if the parents think it's to expensive they won't go in.

Visited as something to do while on holiday. Went in expecting real items, not just replicas. Paid £60 for 4 adults and we went round in about 20 minutes. Far too pricey for what you get. They have a nice little gift shop, but overall I wouldn't recommend unless you're only after something small

This exhibition is amazing and has sustained its brilliance for the many years it has been here ! Staff are welcoming, pleasant and engaging in conversations ! If you are preparing for a trip to, or can't get to, Egypt this is the place to go !!! Shop items are reasonably priced ...

Paid £40 entry for two adults and one child. Very small museum mainly filled with pictures on the walls with text next to them. Creepy wax figures. Completed the entire museum in about 20 mins. Visited as recommended online but sadly we were all disappointed.

Great little museum/ experience. Realistic with a lot of detailed information. Average prices of £15 an adult and £10 a child. Free entry to see the Mummy exhibition upstairs. Would be nice to have a concession price and perhaps a family ticket. Pleasant staff and interesting small gift shop.

It's quite a small exhibition, although there is a lot of information.if you are just looking at the sculptures and models you could probably wizz around in 10-15 minutes, although with reading the information you can quite easily spend and hour or two. Some of the replicas are amazingly detailed which if I read correctly are all handmade by craftsmen using the same materials as the originals. There is a gift shop which was reasonably priced with lots of interesting items. There is a secondary exhibition upstairs with replicas mummies, which although was really interesting, was disappointed with the size of the display. They did ask that you don't take photographs, so I haven't got any to share other than the a few magnets the kids got from the shop.

We visited during our children's half term, driving 40 mins to get there, only to find it closed. The website says 'open at weekends and in school holidays'. I guess it means school holidays for local schools, but why can't the website list the actual opening dates?

A fun and informative museum, albeit a small one. If you take your time it take you about an hour to get around. Overall a fun way to spend a bit of time.

Very interesting for myself and my 9 year old. Unfortunately my 6 year old boy soon lost interest and tried to rush us out. Not huge but lots to see and read in a small space.

Excellent little mueseum, my son is learning about the Egyptians, Tutankhamum and mummies at school and this was a great and informative place to visit with exact replicas of what was found 4-3 thousand years ago.

Really interesting place to visit. Max Gate was the home Thomas Hardy had built and where he lived from the age of 40. The gardens are beautifully kept, absolutely gorgeous. I would highly recommend a visit to Max Gate for anyone who has an interested in the life of Thomas Hardy. We went to see the archaeological dig that was taking place there this week, which was really interesting. The team doing it were really friendly and allowed the kids to get involved with cleaning some of the finds.

Max Gate is the home of Dorset's most famous author and poet Thomas Hardy. The house itself is very apt for the era, and a contrast to the quaint countryside cottage he grew up in. The garden is very much untouched, with high walls and trees surrounding the property. Much like the gardens, the house is also mostly untouched, lots of furniture and antiques are carefully placed within the rooms and are era-appropriate. Extended on from the reception room is a sunroom, enclosed by multiple exotic plants. To the back of the property on the ground floor is the hallway leading to public toilets (baby change available), the admissions office and finally the kitchen; which still includes the AGA oven. Upstairs are the two main bedrooms, unfortunately, both are quite bare; with little furnishings. Hardy’s study is further to the back of the house, being the main attraction for visitors, it contains the most items, including desks, bookcases and pictures. Just outside of the study are the stairs leading to the attic ‘Emma’s bedroom’ where Hardy’s first wife, who became unwell spent her final years. The staff at Max Gate are friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, there are no food/drink kiosks or cafes onsite, however, the café at Hardy’s cottage (10-minute drive away) is usually open for business.

A true hero of mine. Read his books, but like Graham Greene, a man who loved his garden. Stayed in an area where he was born. Cycling through the country lanes of Dorset, exploring, creating fiction for his home. Book your visit soon.

Good welcome from staff member. Free introductory tour from volunteer was v. good - informative, funny, setting the scene of Hardy & the pre-history of the site and answering our questions. Garden was restful. NT are short of space at this venue - a tea room would be lovely. Book your visit to avoid being turned away!

A nice country house of a more modern era. Interesting to see the decor and furniture. It's not a large property and so a couple of hours is lots of time to visit. No cafe when we visited. Worth a look though and well presented by the National Trust as usual.

Limited parking outside. Well restored house, but little original furniture. However, you can see how Hardy added extensions over the years.

Thomas Hardy's home, designed and built by himself, is enough to recommend it for a visit to find out more information about the man and writer. Extremely beautiful, very knowledgeable staff, surrounded by beautiful and very well maintained garden.

A lovely location to visit, with a lot of interesting history. The house is very pretty and pleasant to go around. Personally, I would not recommend going on a tour unless you want a rather detailed and slow paced trip of the house- I found going around the house and reading the ample information panels to be a more enjoyable experience , however the tour guide was very good and the tour was extremely informative.

Lovely house with a very interesting talk before touring the rooms. The day we were there they had had a cookery demo and we were offered some rock cake made with an historic recipe, delicious.

This property is a lovely place to visit for all budding enthusiasts of novelist Tom Hardy. It is advised that you go online and pre-book an allotted time-slot to visit this property as it has limited capacity, the benefit of this is that you are given a informative guided tour of the estate by an enthusiastic National Trust volunteer. On a cursory side note, there is no official car park at this National Trust estate for the general public to use. On-street parking is the only option.

Has to be a top attraction for value! We visited after a couple of very wet days and wellies would be our top tip. Our visit was a very enjoyable 3.5 hours. Its completely free to park, and no charge to enter the park & gardens through the entrance shop. Our kids loved looking at the animals (rabbits, Guinea Pigs, llamas, donkeys, horses, goats, ducks, geese, pigs, chickens etc). Lots of outdoor picnic tables, and the cafe in the play barn was also exceptional value (kids lunch bag £3.50 for example). You can wander though the gardens, and take a longer walk around the lake over to the Old Manor House if you want to stretch your legs more. Thank you to everyone at Kingston Maurward.

Lovely place, excellent that it's free. If only there were more tables in the cafe. Lovely and clean and animals are obviously well looked after. My daughter loved the play areas, but very busy. You could definitely charge entry and I would still visit!

Gorgeous place for a family day at a very low cost (only if you want to eat at the coffee shop), beautiful scenery, plenty of contact animals which look well looked after, clean place, plenty of parking available, staff at the coffee shop is really not friendly but the rest is so nice that you can easily dismiss their service etiquette. Great place all round

I went to their spring show with my grandsons. It was a brilliant day. They had enough toilets, places to eat, and there were places you could sit down. But not while you were watching the shows.

Beautiful relaxing gardens to stroll through and perhaps walk around the lake. Gardens are free to enter, we didn't go into the impressive house but still spent an enjoyable couple of hours here.

The gardens were stunning. I didn't go round the animal farm but from what I could see from the café it looked perfect for children. And adults of course!

A great place to explore and get outside. Expansive gardens, a small animal park, a lake, and the house itself. And FREE admission, you don't even pay to park! Can't say that about too many attractions these days. Means you can definitely enjoy a coffee and cake in the café 😉

It was a lovely place to visit. Free parking and entrance. Plenty for all ages to enjoy. We would have liked to know more about the history and present use of the house, park and garden. The cellar cafe sold the most scrumptious white chocolate cake ever! My first time tasting coffee in a bag, not too bad at all.😊 The children will love the small animal, inside and outside play areas.

This is free! The gardens are amazing to explore, cafe with a small play area and small playground outside too - fabulous stop over if you're going West. Cafe doesn't have a huge selection but the play area trumped this. Animal park has goats, ducks, donkeys etc, nothing too exciting but it was good for us to stretch our legs mid journey. Garden was incredible, so many hidden paths, steps and places to explore and picnic. Can't believe it was free.

This is a free attraction. As such it was just okay. Not great. At times the animals were very far away. Many were hidden away. The staff were friendly the cafe and indoor play area very busy. We didn't have time to tour the garden but we will return.

Outstanding place to bring children, and for free! This is the sort of place English Heritage would charge you £20 to visit and £5 to park in. Free indoor children's play area with lovely cafe. Loads of very happy animals to see and wonderful gardens to walk around. Shame about the older chavy students we saw brazenly throwing litter onto the field, disgusting.

We didn’t have the best weather but there was a mid sized fairly basic indoor soft play with a cafe that kept our 5 year old entertained for an hour. Similarly a midsized outdoor play area that offered as much as an average playground. Otherwise we looked at the animals nearby but not the gardens. Good array of rabbits, Guinea pigs, goats (lots!), pigs, alpacas, ducks, geese and Shetland ponies - our 1 year old was fascinated. Best of all - free entry! We made sure to spend some money with them to support their business 😊

This is a military museum based in the old keep at the top of Dorchester. I was pleasantly surprised to find out it has a lift to all three floors. True you can't access the roof but apart from that the museum is laid out well. I took my son in his wheelchair and had no problems moving around it. The exhibits are well designed and there is a trail to find both rats pictures and a list of objects to spot. A very enjoyable morning spent there.

Really great museum with great friendly staff. Some fantastic displays on multiple levels all about the Dorset regiments. I'm biased as I really like uniforms but I love the uniforms with all the relative props from the era, such a great way to display the history. It's over 5 floors and short of the battlements with great views across Dorchester, every floors packed. I especially loved the gift shop as it wasn't extortionate like some museums so it's affordable to give the kids a reward. There's also some great interactive displays from handling real deactivated guns, battle table with soldiers, brass rubbing and colouring. Love this museum! Well done

Superb Military Museum, hundreds of interesting artefacts. Really well laid out, covering mainly Dorset and Devon regiments in all their theatre's of war. Highly recommend a visit and the views from the roof are excellent. Good value for money, a nice little shop and free parking. We went midweek, no queues, no problem seeing all the exhibits.

After visiting the Dorset Museum down the road we were very disappointed so decided to call in here. Wow. What an amazing museum with friendly staff and a vast collection of objects, medals, uniforms and knowledge. One of the best museums we’ve been to and definitely the best in Dorchester!

Great displays well set out worth a visit nice to see child friendly areas

As a former soldier, I found The Keep interesting but a bit dull. Not much for children. Best bit was the roof view.

On a recent trip to Dorset, my eldest son and I decided to visit the keep one afternoon when the weather was dismal. We spent a good few hours exploring the exhibitions which were very informative and interesting. There are loads of mannequins dressed in period clothes and uniforms, all of which added to the realism. I would highly recommend it.

Excellent displays and brilliant view of Dorchester 10/10 definitely will be coming back again.

A small but interesting and comprehensive set of exhibits from various conflicts all over the world. Some quite poignant artifacts with various bullets lodged in items. Seeing Hitlers desk was certainly a suprise. The views from the roof are really great!

Had a lovely time here while visiting Dorchester on holiday!! Run by volunteers it's a lovely museum in an old Keep and Prison!! It's the story of the Dorchester regiment and their history over hundreds of years! You can also go up the top of the Keep which has lovely views of the countryside!!

Had a lovely morning here. Beautiful flowers in bloom and gardens to walk around. The staff were very friendly. Lovely little cafe too. Hoping to come again with the children as the little playpark is an added bonus.

Beautiful gardens in a very quiet village with lots of parking, some parts on the walk I struggled to push the pram around due to the ground being very soft. The cafe was unfortunately to busy when we went so was not able to try the food but it did look good.

Nice place to let the young kids burn up some energy while the grownups enjoy a coffee and cake in the cafe. Some animals and bugs to see within pretty walled grounds. A little off the beaten track, but you'll enjoy it once you find it.

Such a local treasure. The food was delicious, at first I thought it was on the expensive side… but gave it a go and was not disappointed! It was worth every penny and obviously everybody’s bills have gone up so cafes have no choice but to put up the cost! It was delicious, surroundings are beautiful…you get a lot for your money here.

Nice place. I stopped for a coffee whilst on a cycling trip across Dorset. It was obviously popular with cyclists. It was quite a long walk to the toilets!!! However the food and drinks were good. I appreciated the way they seemed to be training people with special needs to work. Their words of encouragement to such staff were lovely to hear.

Great little cafe amid pleasant gardens ideal for a relaxed stroll after eating. Paths and 'garden rooms' complex enough that kids love exploring and running around them. Good for various outdoor kids games involving hiding or creeping up on each other etc. (Not ball games)

It has lots of facilities, quite a few restrooms, lots & lots of picnic area's, plenty of things children can do. Free to get in but theirs a honesty box to put a donation in and a garden shop .plus a church which has the most fabulous window's, there's also a small animal section

What a gem ! gorgeous village location with pretty walks and the ford also T E Lawrence final resting place next door. The walled garden itself is varied and peaceful and a little oasis. The food at the cafe was very good and of a much higher standard than of most tea rooms both savoury and sweet. Staff were very polite and helpful and the whole set up was very well organised. What a pleasure.

We visited today for the breakfast with santa event: it was the best affordable santa event locally that we have been to! The thought and time gone In to making it magical for the kids was very noticeable! Santa spent time with every child , gave a gift , story time with cookies and milk and a very yummy breakfast for the children and grown ups- best full English breakfast I’ve had in ages! All the staff were very helpful and cheerful which is sadly quite rare now! Thank you all. We had a lovely morning. Would definitely recommend .

Great visit, children loved seeing and holding the insects, and all the staff had so much knowledge.

Despite a rainy day we had a lovely day here with the grandchildren. They especially enjoyed the dinosaur trail, which was extra for the trail sheet, but was well worth it. A mixed type of gardens, some needing some tlc but lovely all the same. Entrance price is reasonable at £3pp adults, children free too all by donation request. The money goes back in to the gardens. Highly recommend a visit - we will definitely be back. The grandchildren hoping for another trail as they loved it so much

Beautiful place and is nearly autumn so I bet it would be even better in spring! Cafe had a good selection of food and the cakes looked amazing, the garden was peaceful and had many good spots to sit down and enjoy nature, loved the farm animals but would have been nice to have more descriptions of the plants (not just the name) and maybe some signs around the animals as well, talking about their names and maybe about their personalities/habits?! 😅 But overall a great quiet afternoon

A very pleasant stroll through the free gardens. There were lots of benches so I was able to have lots of rests. My disability restricts how far I can walk in one go but this was OK. I enjoyed discovering the various sculptures and we stopped for a cuppa at the cafe. We were going to have lunch at the cafe there too but after having a slice of the lemon and poppy seed cake with our drinks we decided to move on. It was very dry and not nice. First time in years I haven't finished a bit of cake! The gluten free lemon cake looked much nicer, I should have gotten that one! My mate did mention she liked their tea blend though.

An interesting museum and free. Only a relatively small exhibit, but worth a visit. You can also download an audio tour of the village. Be aware that the museum hasn't parking of its own. I parked in a layby directly opposite

A very basic museum but interesting and thought provoking. The village trail is well worth doing with the trail map from the shop. Couldn't get the trail audio-visual to work on the website and couldn't find the app mentioned on the boards.

Interesting, didn’t really know what to expect, nice bit of history. The world is a better place for what these 1/2 dozen men did in the beginning.

A very important chapter in working class history, socialism and the trade union movement. Striking sculpture outside and entry is free, though I'd advise a donation. The reason? These stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things are in danger of being lost as the funding is just not there. This is sadly evident in the rather basic displays telling the story, but I would add they're still very effective. Surprised that there wasn't more materials on display but I appreciate space is probably an issue. Covid has left it's mark too with the interactive features presently unavailable (though given they're narrated by turncoat scab "Sir" Tony Robinson I consider this no great loss). Visitor gift shop has a fair few things to offer from badges and pencils, t shirts, postcards and mugs. I'd recommend bigger water bottles for sale. I need a new one and would have purchased if they'd hold more than just a few swigs. In conclusion, this is worth checking out, as is a stroll around the beautiful village to soak up the ambience and see the areas of historical interest. Please support. These are our stories.

Very interesting museum and one that is informative of a subject which often isn't given much consideration. Not huge so don't plan a day - allow about 30 minutes. Runs on donations so do bring cash.

We've all heard about the Tolpuddle Martyrs but have only a vague knowledge about the actualitè. The information here clarifies the issues, and given that the museum is in their village, and the immediate area is still very rural you get a real sense of place. I enjoyed the visit, and the walk around the village.

Probably only of interest to certain people. A salient point of our history is explained in some detail but there's not a lot there really. Definitely not a museum to take the kids.

Nothing to see went round both museums in under 5 minutes the shop had a small selection of teddy’s and for 2 adults and 1 child to go round at the cost of £28 is a rip of. Definitely not worth it and would recommend it even if it was free. It also took the cashier 10 minutes to work out the price and for us to pay.So sorry xx

While we had a discount code, we found the ticket prices to be relatively high given the museum’s size. Our visit lasted approximately 20-30 minutes, and even with a £5.00 discount, we paid £36.00 for two kids and two adults. It’s worth noting that the museum is not a registered charity; however, the fees contribute towards staff and maintenance costs. Once you get up the stairs, you notice the museum’s limited space, dustiness, and dim lighting. - It’s like a a small three bedroom house on one floor :(

2nd time visit(not out of choice) with family & a young niece who were visiting..they enjoyed it..but once you've seen it that's it! 1 floor with a few rooms of various teddies past & present..expensive for what it is really but happy to support a small museum. Teddies for sale were a bonus for my niece👍🏼 Parking is free for an hour outside which is plenty of time.

Took the granddaughters and Mummy of course. It really was super. We all loved it. Such a great selection of teddies big and small. Great to see Rupert, Paddington, sooty and Sue and Sweep and so many more. In luvly setting and very hands on. The children could touch them. Thanku so much. We will visit again. Ideal for a damp day.

I loved this place but so expensive for what it is which took the shine off it somewhat. Only 2 out of 6 of us went in because of the price, had it been £5 we would have all gone in and more money would have gone through the till. The current admission is far too high for a couple of rooms worth of exhibits. There seems to be a syndicate of smaller museums in Dorchester clinging to some ridiculous gold ticket scheme. It's a shame as none of them are good value on their own, and the museums are so different you are unlikely to find that they all interest you. I honestly think all would get a lot more footfall if the price reflected the quality and extent of the exhibits.

A bit smaller than I thought it would of been but the kids loved it. This is part a 4 attractions in the town, all linked together. Get your Golden Ticket to visit them all in a day.

This is a fantastic collection, the owners have clearly made a big effort to make it interesting for all. There is lots of information and teddies to look at. If you really like teddies then it's worth the visit. Killed 30 minutes for us on a miserable day.

Definitely not worth the price! It’s extremely expensive for what is in there! Personally I wouldn’t bother wasting your time or money! 3 rooms of old fashioned teddy’s that’s it! My son had a max card so 1 adult 3 children cost £26 and we was in there 10 minutes! Went to walk around and the moody women said THAT area costs extra! In a abrupt voice So I then explained to her that it was ridiculous for that price and walked out. Will not return and certainly will not recommend. The attitude needs to change aswell of that staff member. Again don’t bother!

In conclusion, while the Dorset Teddy Bears Museum has an appealing layout and an engaging self-tour storyline, the brevity of the experience and the high entry fee may leave some visitors feeling underwhelmed. It could be a charming visit for a quick stop, but for the price point, visitors might expect a more substantial and immersive experience.

To be honest…this place is kinda worth of it.I mean like only if you enjoy looking at old things(I do),but I mean man WHY WAS IT £52 FOR 2 adults and 4 children…being serious!It’s £10 for 1 adult and £4 for a child.Also you need to pay extra if you want to visit the other part of the museum.

Lovely friendly, welcoming staff. Happy to listen and chat to my 5 year grandson, who to start with wasn't sure of the big bears but having the story of Edward Bear to read to him going round gave the bears characters and he really enjoyed himself and enjoy telling the staff about what he had seen. Absolutely wonderful. The teddies are upstairs kids oryoung at heart. You must go. However, it is not really wheelchair friendly

The place itself was nice and had lots of Teddies to see. However, it's certainly not worth £10.00 for the few rooms that they have there. Also, they do not cater for people with mobility disabilities it's not wheelchair accessible. The teddies are located on the 1st floor and has slightly winding stairs only for access.

Lovely views, good point to stop on one of the many footpaths around, or as a 15 minute detour off the A35. It’s used as a meeting point for local ‘boy racers’ but quite frankly I was impressed they not only got through the narrow, car paint covered gate post but also managed to drive a car that was 3 inches off the ground over those gravelly potholes.

Could have been better kept but view was stunning. Info was good though and also directions of settlements and Barrows.

We visited Hardy's Monument to go for a walk on a beautiful sunny afternoon. It wasn't very busy so made the walk more enjoyable. I do not think the National Trust can expect dog owners to take home smelly poo bags in their cars . Litter yes but surely they can afford bins as people are leaving bags on the ground for animals to perhaps die trying to swallow them!

Wonderful views and a large carpark. The carpark is very rough with massive pot holes. The entrance is also extremely narrow and wide cars might struggle to fit. There are dome great interpretation boards telling you about the place.

Stunning views. On a clear day it’s 360° of absolute beauty. Great opportunities for walks. The car park has a very narrow entrance. There is another car park down the road which also has a narrow entrance. Information board / map. Picnic tables.

Not a huge amount to do up here but, on a good day, you can get lost in the breathtaking views or see what you can see in the clouds. Although you can drive in, it's very tight so, if you have a wider than average car, don't bother. Park at the bottom and walk up or park at the top and walk along. Sometimes there are cattle up here so be careful if it's foggy as they can be on the road.

Beautiful location with a large Portland Stone tower built in memory of Captain Hardy by his daughters, whose ship HMS Victory carried Admiral Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar. The views on a clear day are spectacular in every direction, large bumpy car park on a slope with a narrow opening, occasionally a tea van present.

Great place for a walk,views are magnificent being one of the highest points around. Plenty of trails leading through the woods so good if you have a bike.

Great to walk the tracks around Hardys Monument , peaceful , spectacular views of coast , Weymouth Bay and surrounding fields, bluebells just emerging in the woods which are also full of bird song. Excellent place to relax and enjoy nature.

Rubbish, not worth the money it cost to get in .

Visited as something to do while on holiday. Went in expecting real items, not just replicas. Paid £40 for 4 adults and we went round in about 10 minutes. Far too pricey for what you get. I wouldn't recommend unless you're willing to spend £10 per head on some 70s footage

Uhhh... It's OK. Bit underwhelming, must say. Pretty good visuals, facts printed on paper you can search on wiki. Pretty decent models, though. Enjoyed the long video, although outdated and the room being a bit scruffy. Quite bland, but simple. Aesthetic? It's good if you get it in the deal with the other museums. I suggest going to the teddy bear museum, its just way better in my opinion.

I think this is a great little museum that the owner has put a lot of effort in to include some really great displays, along with plenty of reading material it certainly brings the subject to life. The offer of visiting several places under one ticket price helps to increase the value. We visited on the last day of our holiday, and intend to re-visit all the museums on a cool/wet day.

Avoid this place... unless you are desperate to waste roughly 10 quid per head on 10 mins spent in a creepy living room looking at reproduction statues and 1970s documentary footage. Shocking.

Found out about this museum from a flyer at my hotel. This Museum is located on the a main street close to pay and display car parking and various restaurants etc. It is open daily from 10am until 5pm and it's wheelchair accessible. Enterance fees are as follows. Adults £ 6.50 children £ 4.50 under 5's Free. You can book online or pay at the door whatever takes your fancy 😊 They also have a saver pass which gives you entry into the Teddy Bear Museum, Tutankhamun Exhibition. Mummies Exhibition as well as this one.(This ticket is valid for 7 days) Good size gift shop and a very interesting days visit in my opinion. The staff were very friendly and helpful during my visit.
