I came here just for fun seeking to find a nice view and serene calm everything. And this area did not disappoint. I got to see an amazing view of the mountain. I got up to the mountain but using the rope lift which is basically a ski lift. And while riding the ski you will get insane views of the ocean, buildings, random floating things and etc. If you go to hakodate you HAVE to come here, it's a must.

Breathtaking view at sunset. The sunshine pierced through the perfect opening of clouds today, giving us all an awesome view of Hokodate and its surrounding area. I could spend an entire day up here just looking out as far as the eye can see. I love winter and the cold, so it was perfect timing for me, snow blanketed the ground and fell gentle from the sky. The cold air blowing ranges from gentle frosty breeze to bull whip to the face; reminds you you’re alive, ha ha. But I’d imagine any season you visit would be beautiful. Don’t worry about crowds, sure there are other people there, work your way around the entire 360° of the top and you’ll find a turn to take photos or just look out at a majestic view. Enjoy it within the company of fellow humans. Go, now, don’t be shy, worth the trip.

You get to it by cable car and I think that Sharon and I may well have conquered our fear of this type of travel. The view from the top of the mountain over Hakodate was just beautiful with the city nestled in between a huge range of snow crested mountains and the Japan Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Wonderful views of Hakodate city and the ocean, but the place is extremely crowded though. Be there before sunset so you can enjoy both day and night views.

The Ropeway to Hakodate is about 8 to 10 mins drive from Hakodate Train Station & it costs about JPY1000… Therefore I suggest just pay for the ride & go to the ropeway if you have a tight schedule. The view up there is spectacular but you probably won’t spend more than 10 mins due to the crowd and wind.

Great views but you’ll be fighting over photo spots with bus loads of organized tour groups. I’d really like to recommend this place but it’s too touristy and at least when I went the other tourists weren’t very friendly and didn’t allow to take turns often staying put after taking photos and only letting others from the same tour group occupy the spot. I believe more can be done to make this a better experience

Amazing view at the top. Pay 950 to visit the top level is a must. U can have 360 view of the Hakodate area with the mountains as the backdrop. Car park is opposite the tower. So park and walk across the street to the tower entrance. The lift to go up is fast. The view is really great. Highly recommend.

Beautiful tower with great elevator service. There is an elevator attendant that gave a talk as you ride the elevator up to the top. The top features a 360 view of the surrounding city and goryokaku fort. It also has cute comics explaining the history of the fort. You can buy tickets at the first floor and there is also a large gift shop on the first floor with lots of souvenirs and some food as well.

Great place to see the famous star shaped Goryokaku Fort! I was impressed by how much history they have shared in the museum - all of it provides in multiple languages. The view was impressive and it was nice to be able to learn a bit about the historical significance as well!

A lovely and huge park with beautiful landscape and a serene lake. Goryokaku park is famous for the iconic star-shaped fort constructed in 1855. The Goryokaku tower is located just opposite the park and it offers a full view of the fort. In the center of the park, there is a magistrate office which open for visits but admission fee is required. Overall it is a nice park to explore but it was rather crowded during my visit.

A beautiful park/fort for morning walks. There are lots of cherry trees and maple trees throughout the park. We went in the morning and the park was practically empty. We got to enjoy the colourful red and yellow trees that had just started turning colours. The place would have been breathtaking in the peak Autumn.

Definitely a must-visit experience in Hakodate especially during cherry blossom blooms or in the fall. We went in the last week of April and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom and it looked absolutely gorgeous!! There is also an observation deck near the entrance (Goryokaku tower) and I would recommend going up to get a great view of the fort as well as the surrounding city. Would also recommend staying till after dark as they light up the space with lanterns.

Awesome park for Sakura view. Perfect visit last April - early May. But the park rest room is really dirty and have no water. If you want to clean rest room and have the nice bidet, you can go to the Goryokaku tower.

The park was quite huge but it was an amazing trip for us. It was magically and beautifully covered in light pink by the cherry trees when we were there in late April. Gorgeous view to the tower and park of the city could be seen from the park as well.

You can view the Hakodate from the top. There’s a historical map and coin telescope to zoom. It’s all white in winter and you can walking around in the Goryokaku Park

Went to the park twice towards end of April during its full cherry blossom week(Once is just NOT enough!), words cannot describe its beauty…. What’s so unique and spectacular about the cherry blossom viewing experience at this place you can’t get elsewhere is that the layout of the park and the positioning of the cherry trees. The park’s been built into a shape of 5 stars, and along each point of the star, there’re approx. 3 story tall mounted ridges where cherry trees are planted on top of the ridges as well as on the ground level underneath the ridges, so as you walk along the top of the ridges, you get a sense of being surrounded by cherry blossom 365 degrees above, on your eye level and below, a true 3D experience. Anyway, as I said, it’s an experience beyond words. So enjoy the photos!!

We didn't do the museum since our time there is short. You can take a bus here from Hakodate station about 15-20 mins but if you have 3+ in your party, I recommend just doing the taxi. Also directly from observation hall id a really good ramen place that gets busy real quick, be sure to grab seats during non busy hours. Ajsai ramen Hakodate was the name I think. Nice views and perspective of the city and surrounding area. Had a gorgeous sunset to capture but decided to leave thereafter before the crowd gets bigger and it will take longer to get down. Infact right after we got down, there was announcement on suspension of ropeway service and long Q of people waiting to get up. Nice experience overall.

This ropeway is quite famous and you can ride this to get to Mount Hakodate Observatory. Although it was pretty crowded during weekend and holiday, the wait was not that long. I recommend to get in here before sunset so that you can settle a good place to observe the city view. It got quite breathtaking views from since before sunset until it got quite dark and you can see the city lights starting to turn on.

It actually lived up to it's reputation. Took the cable car up about 7:45, but ended up staying until almost 9, in part for the amazing view, in part to wait for the crowds to clear. I would recommend you go a bit later to miss the tour groups. Great place for a romantic evening. If you are fighting for viewing space, consider checking out the view of the bay while you wait. The boats at anchor are a nice sight and there is really no one trying to get a good space to take a picture.

Spectacular night views. In a town that has very little to offer this is one place not to miss. The only real drawback was because the views are so go it seems everyone in town was there on the same night.

Hakodate is such a. Wonderful, quiet, ocean town. It’s main highlight is the tram that goes from the base of the mountain to the top. The overlook is spectral especially at night where you can see the twilight and the lit up city below. It’s costs about $14 and you can either take the bus down or the tram. This place is beautiful at night. We were lucky enough to go on a night that there were fireworks. The only draw back is that the viewing area isn't huge (you can go up to another platform but it was blocked for the fireworks as they were filming), which can make it crowded.

The view at the top was great. We visited around sunset time. The ropeway costs 1260 Yen round trip, but if you’re adventurous and want to walk up the mountain there is no entrance fee to the observatory.

Visited during low season, late September. Not many people at all, barely any tourists which was awesome. Safety protocol here seems very strict, the day I arrived, weather was absolutely clear but ropeway service came to a halt for about 40 minutes due to “chance of thunder” at the mountain. 1800yen to use ropeway service both ways, no time limit which was reasonable price. Service is quick, efficient. During my stay in Hakodate, I came here twice: day and night time! Definitely worth the money that’s for sure.

Very nice view from above. Just don’t like how crowded the cable car is to the top and back. They make it full and it’s squeezy before sending it on the way. You have to wait 10-15mins for every ride because it takes time for the car to travel. Up on the mountain, there are at least 4 different view points to see Hakodate, so just know that you don’t have to settle for the view behind the glass. Just go up to the 3rd or 4th view point and you can get better photos. The best time to go is the 4pm slot in winter. Or if other seasons, you wanna choose the time that is 45mins before sunset and stay until it gets dark so you get two views in one trip. There’s a lot of people who camp at the viewpoints for the best photos by the way. So don’t carry your hopes too high if you’re planning to get great ones, unless you pay (there’s a spot they cordoned off.) Walking down is the mountain is fast and easy because it’s steep. But it’s fun.

Be prepared for the swarms of tourists! This is an extremely busy location, especially at sunset! We went at night (around 6pm) and had to wait 10mins at the top of the ropeway to get a view of the cityscape. It was well worth the wait! The view of the lit up city at night is mesmerising... but I am warning you that it can get really pushy and you will feel a constant pressure to get out of the way of others! The staff and facilities are great and we always felt safe and understood. The restaurant at the top is a great spot for a drink with a view! Go there, it's worth it.... Good luck with the crowd!

The Hakodate Ropeway is a short tram ride to the highest peak around Hakodate. The view of the city is one of the prettiest in all of Japan. Was there in the afternoon and into the evening to get typical tourist photos. If I were going to ding this place, the later afternoon crowds were a bit much with so many tour buses. But the views truly speaks to the popularity.

Enjoy a scenic downhill panorama in Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan. Exercise caution as the sideways staircase can be slippery to navigate during winter time. Refrain from taking long selfies on this public highway for safety reasons. Nothing to do much within the area, as most of the establishments are closed during my twice visit on Jan 5 and Jan 12 of 2024.

I'm a big seafood guy. And the seafood here was really good. I honestly think it was better than tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, with a larger selection and fresher fish that are still swimming in the tanks. I would definitely try out the hairy crab, and if you have kids or are a kid at heart, the squid fishing game is pretty fun as well.

I honestly think it was better than tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, with a larger selection and fresher fish that are still swimming in the tanks. I would definitely try out the hairy crab, and if you have kids or are a kid at heart, the squid fishing game is pretty fun as well.

Visit here to enjoy 2800 yen (per personX2) afternoon's set. Beautiful place and Wedgewood tea cups but food isn't recommendable. it's not worth of it. Sandwich another cakes are not valuable, some low quality. Just try tea. You can choose one among 5 teas.

I think this is not for everyone unless you have interest in British history and influence to Hakodate. It's a small museum that can be finished by 30min if you're that fast. I don't think this is worth visiting if none of your company is interested to this.

It was dirt cheap for a combined ticket so if you're around/passing by, it's worth popping in. If anything, I think the appeal of it was mostly the "English" vibes, e.g. Western style rooms and English tea room, but personally as a Brit that wasn't very exciting for me. I did get a kick out of seeing them selling pictures of Kate and Will and Paddinngton Bear in the gift shop. The history side of it was okay, and I definitely picked up some interesting information, but it's a small space. Overall, provided you're not interested in afternoon tea/general British vibes, you could probably be in and out of here in half an hour.

This was a nice small museum of the former British Consulate. You can walk around the building and its garden for free, and you have to pay to view inside the building. If you enjoy history this place is worth a visit. Small museum but very interesting and informative. Afterwards we had tea and desert in the on site tea room.

Established in 1859 as a provisional church by French cleric Mermet De Cachon from the Paris Foreign Missions Society, this marks the inception of such endeavors in Japan. This occurred despite the government's persistent ban on Christianity, which would last for over a decade. This church holds historical significance comparable to the Yamate Church in Yokohama and the Oura Church in Nagasaki. In 1868, Priests Mounicou and Ambruster erected a makeshift church at the current location. By 1877, the first wooden church was constructed under the guidance of Priest Marin, although it succumbed to fire on three occasions. The current fire-resistant Gothic-style building dates back to 1924. Pope Benedict XV gifted the Tyrolean wooden carvings that depict the fourteen Stations of the Cross and comprise the altar.

Went there at evening. Was nice atmosphere and could see downtown from there.

Small Catholic Church . Not much to say, otherwise that its worth popping in to have a look. Went on a Sunday afternoon, wasn't busy at all.

The church has a gothic architectural style which is now fire-proof. Pope Benedict XV presented the 14 Stations of the Cross on the wall you will see inside. This church is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Beautiful church. Manage to have Christmas eve mass eventhough we were late...never expected that Chrismass eve mass start at 5pm...i was expecting around 7 or 8

Hiked up the hill to visit the beautiful church. Unfortunately the doors to the inside were locked - could not find any other entrance. Might be due to the snow storm yesterday.

Interesting experience. Also a must-visit, when heading to Hakodate. Unfortunately, there is a very small share of English descriptions. Still, it is a great experience, just to be here and see all those special rooms like „radio-room“. You can’t enter the machine rooms. I am not sure, but if you have the JR Railpass, this museum could be for free, because it was operated by JR. Just ask. Otherwise, the admission fee was 500 Yen per adult, which is ok.

Great museum, very interactive so perfect for kids! Really worth going. It has 2 bathrooms and is not very cold inside.

Brave the chilly zero degrees wind and walk all the way there and the ship was not there. I guess it closes in winter like many attractions in Hokkaido.

Great little detour to take to see some history on the ferry between the mainlands. Most of the information cards are JP only - use google translate camera if you need. The insides are preserved very well, with the control/radio room having some working props to play around with

It is a nice museum reformed from a previously used ferry. Some parts of the ferry, such as some seats/ sleeping space, are still nicely maintained. You can find a lot of exhibits showing the history of Japanese ferry and maritime development. A detailed video showing the marine disaster can also be found. Not a must-go place but still a nice visit if you have time in Hakodate.

Great experience, but some display descriptions/stories are only depicted in Japanese. Would be handy to use Google Translater if you are interested to know more about the history.

Your average museum ship. Disappointingly, lower rail deck was not open, and the outside of the ship need a lot of fresh paint and repair.However, the inside deck was well preserve with beautiful models of ships served this part of the dangerous sea.

500yen per pax for the visit. All in Japanese. A tad hard for foreigners to understand and appreciate.
