Marvellous and wonderful ancient village preserved for 1000s of years by the encroaching dunes. Fantastic visitor centre helps understand how the village and people survived and flourished in this tough environment. The village itself is small but very interesting and I'm sure it was comfortable at its height. Allow approx. 45 minutes to view everything at a comfortable pace. Cafe and toilets available Parking also available.

Visited a couple of weeks ago while I was in Orkney. Very interesting place to visit on a stunning coastline. We had a lovely day, with sunshine. I would recommend visiting if you get the chance.

Amazing to walk around and see all the historic sites. All very well preserved and really interesting to be able to look at the houses & enter in to the recreation house too. There were a few information boards around so you could find out a bit about how they think things would have been used. The cafe had an incredibly long queue though. Obviously we didn’t have to decide to wait, that was our choice so can’t complain about - but it was about 40 minutes wait as a pre warning. They did only have two people working though. You do have to book in advance.

Very cool prehistoric site. Hard to believe that people lived here more than 4000 years ago. So interesting to see their huts and learn how they lived. Definitely one of the top sites on the outlet Orkney Islands and worth the visit. Definitely recommend

Fantastic job by locals in preserving these ruins. A museum, gift shop, and cafe are on-site. Recommend making reservations. Your ticket gets you into the neighboring Skaill House. You could complete the village in 1.5 hours. Add at least 30min if you visit Skaill House. Plenty of parking.

A wonderful glimpse into the distant past. Really interesting and managed by friendly, helpful staff. English Heritage membership gives a discount in Historic Scotland sites. Advisable to book in advance.

Fascinating neolithic site in a spectacular beachside location.  Excellent interpretation, including a mock-up of one of the living areas that you can walk into (to preserve the actual site it must be viewed from external walkways). Easy parking, and nice cafe.

I doubt anyone, even those who have no interest in history, can fail to be impressed by this 5,000 year old village. We were absolutely fascinated by what we saw and learned about the way people lived and their customs all those years ago. The remains are incredibly well preserved so it is possible to see individual rooms laid out, but the centre has also recreated one home to get the full effect. There are plenty of information boards around the site but the friendly and informative guides also answered any questions for us. Most of the site is accessible but the centre hires out motorised scooters too. There is a cafe on site and toilets. A fabulous visit, I am sure that this will certainly be at the top of anyone's list when visiting Orkney. I just hope it can survive the encroaching sea as it is very, very close.

Incredible to be here. So well preserved. They also had an amazing cafe there. So it makes for a great lunch spot. I recommend the sandwiches! But amazing soup too!

Very best to go visit. The coastal areas can be rather windy, so dress appropriately and throwing in gloves might be good. You cannot walk inside of it, but there’s a path around.above it and the path crossing through part of it. There is also a model house you might say to go through prior. The short film is worth watching. The path is paved and it’s not a hard walk. The car park did seem to fill up within an hour of opening the day we went, but people were coming and going continually. The cafe is fairly standard for one of their locations. No wifi on site. Your ticket includes entrance to the mansion next door and is good for kids with a mouse hunt activity. It’s rather pricey for a family, so the yearly membership to the organisations is worth it, especially if you plan to visit other sites in Scotland. Also, just south a bit is Yesnaby, which is worth the short drive to the car park and to take a walk.

A must visit. Go early, right at opening at 9:30am; or an hour before closing. Bus loads of people will otherwise be there.

Fascinating prehistoric village in a stunning location. A must for anybody interested in history. And for those that aren't still worth a visit.

Pretty impressive preservation of the site which is understandably protected but you can still see everything and get close. The visitor centre has some excellent staff and there is a family farm house on site too.

Amazing prehistoric village. The seaview is a breathtaking. Amazing five thousand years ago this was the way how they lived. You got to see to believe it.

Breathtaking! You just need to see it! I visited it just before I left the UK , over 7 years ago, and it is still such a vivid memory that I'm recommending it to my most daring and adventurous students.

Such an amazing place, highly recommended! Stepping back in times to see how people lived 5000 years ago, we had a dry day, and walked around the place 3 times to absorb the whole place. Totally amazing!

Overcast, but no rain. Wind, oh YES! Hardest part of the visit when there was such a long (400yd) walk to get there from the parking lot. Wonderful to see such a circular monument about 600 years older than Stone henge.

Beautiful formation of stones with so much history! There’s a path that you can take that walks you round the stones. At the minute you can’t get right up to them due to the path being rested but you can see them perfectly well.

Definitely one of the top things to see in the Orkney Islands. It's so interesting to see the huge stones and wonder how they got here and what they were used for. Would definitely put this on your list of things to see

Very interesting. There are guides there to answer questions and give you background information.Cannot touch stones, only walk around them from behind a moat that is actually part of the ring. Added bonus...it's free! I think it's a must do.

It was very interesting for me to see those old standing stones but probably not everyone choice. Anyway they looks beautiful and view there is amazing.

The real deal! I was there early to avoid the busses of people. The inside path is closed still during spring, so the ground can recover. One can then only walk on the outside path. Best photos are taken from the hilltop, as it’s not even ground.

Obviously a must-see when visiting Orkney. Every such monument you want to be on your own for taking photos and for atmosphere but that's not easy in summer. It was still a great place to stand and take in the views and atmosphere.

Very striking to see the Ring of Brodgar come into view. Easy walking and wheelchair access. Free and no need to book in advance. Spectacular views!

Visited the Ring by taking the public bus from Kirkwall, and the bus driver was happy to tell us when to get off. It's a 1 mile walk to the Ring, and you pass the Stones of Stenness on the way. The Ring appears on the horizon as you approach, and you begin to appreciate the great size of it. The Ring is surrounded by a ditch and is free to visit, but you can't enter inside it. It's good to walk around the Ring and marvel how it was constructed thousands of years ago with no mechanical help. It's greatly impressive and well worth a visit. It's good then to take the bus to Stromness after walking back up the lane, before returning to Kirkwall.

Yet another spectacular stone circle/ alignment that's a must see. Plenty of parking nearby. It's a bit of a climb to the stones themselves if you're not fit, but we'll worth the effort. Well worn track guides you around the perimeter and takes about 15 minutes. No charge to view.

Breathtaking. I have no idea why anyone would rate this stunning place less than five stars unless it happened to be very crowded or they were wearing stiletto heels or suede loafers (it’s a little muddy). You can’t walk inside the ring or up to the stones, but the views all around them are stunning. It is a little bit of a walk - maybe 200 yards? - from the car park. It’s incredible to see these massive slabs hauled from miles away thousands of years ago. The visit is free … no cost for parking.

Easy to get to on the island with ample parking. There are two areas to look at here with access to the rings managed to protect the environment. No charge.

We visited the Ring of Brodgar, Orkney Islands Scotland on a Princess Cruise on May 16, 2022. The monument is bigger than Stonehenge and was a view of some of Neolothic Man's accomplishments around 4500 years ago. Happy to say this was now one of my bucket list places to visit in Scotland.

A Mystic Circle in the Highlands - The Ring of Brodgar : A must-see on our NC500 adventure was the Ring of Brodgar, an awe-inspiring part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site. There is a tranquillity here that adds to the overall experience. Accessibility is excellent, with convenient parking and easy-to-navigate paths leading to the monument. In conclusion, the Ring of Brodgar is an extraordinary piece of Neolithic heritage that brings a rich depth to the NC500 journey. Its historical significance, combined with its stark beauty, makes it a site that cannot be missed. It's a place that invites contemplation and provides a tangible link to our ancient ancestors. Also very good to drive with the Scewo BRO electric wheelchair 😎👍

Did the Overnight B&B, Which was worth doing, followed by a lively crossing to scrabster. Very clean and well laid out ferry. Staff on board were very good, but staff in both terminals lacking decent customer service skills, hence 4 not 5 star.

This was one of the most pleasant surprises of our trip. The personnel on the ferry is super friendly and helpful. We also stayed for a night in the premium cabin and the cabin itself as well as all the drinks, food and lounge access that was included in the -very reasonable- price was great. A wonderful experience...

Very good helpful women (staff!) I spoke to on the phone & in person. I missed a Pentland Ferry, (other company who sail from mainland North Scottish Highlands to Orkney)as Pentland had sailed slightly earlier than scheduled & I'd been misadvised by a member of their staff that I didn't need to book. I'd driven an hour from North Orkney to get to the south for that Ferry only to see it sailing away early ahead of schedule ! Was so upset & anxious as I simply had to get back, it was urgent ! Also Pentland were fully booked up the next morning & their eailrliest ferry was too late for me so Northlink came to my rescue, so to speak ! 2 ladies at Pentland Ferries staff at St. Margaret's Hope were extremely nice & helpful & told me about other company's timetables so I phoned Northlink & they had availability at first sail @6:30am & booked me on without payment ! I'd pay on arrival but they secured my booking over the phone & I made it back to my destination, late but it worked out reasonably Okay although Northlink are up to £25 more expensive than Pentland & they also go to Shetland whereas Pentland don't, they both go to & from different parts. Pentland's used to go past the 2nd largest & high mountainous island of Hoy & the Old Man of Hoy (famous phalic stone sea stack) but now they've changed their route so you don't see it but the ferry I took with Northlink this time (01 July '22) did ! So pleased to get to see it before left Orkney cos hadn't managed to fit it in !

Clean, friendly staff. Spacious ship with great views. Took the ferry from Stromness to the mainland, about a hour ride. Passed the Old Man of Hoy surrounded in haar. Fun to wander from one side to the other to see the different views. Staff on shore friendly and helpful. Great way to travel and be relaxed.

It's interesting that the Queen Mother once dined here. A nice add on after touring Skara Brae

We had an enjoyable stay at PeerieSkaill. It’s a lovely, comfortable, warm, well equipped apartment with an enclosed courtyard garden available to use, perfect for those with a dog. Ideal for couple or a small family. Its location right by Skara Brae and Bay of Skaill was perfect for us, but may be a little isolated for those wishing to travel around the island every day. We had a very tasty ‘Welcome Basket’ on arrival, and were made to feel most welcome by the hosts. A very historic and interesting place to stay. Highly recommended.

Combined ticket with Scara Brae and is an easy walk from there. A lot to see and gives an insight into the life of a laird. Next to the visitor centre and can be visited from there directly if you wish. There is a small shop as well.

We hasn't planned to visit Skail House, but when we purchased our Shara Brae ticket, we were advised we could visit Skail House at no extra cost. And we're glad we did visit! Such an interesting Manor house with lots of archaeological, royal (Queen Mother), fashion (Dior) and historical connections. Not a place to miss if you're already in the area and like to see a bit of everything.

Old historical house that was home to the big knows in this neck of the woods. In very close proximity to Scara Brae so you might as well visit. Lots of historical and military stuff on display. I'd imagine an hour would ba enough to comfortably see all on display.

Our fourth stay in the Langskaill apartment did not disappoint. We were made to feel most welcome by everybody. The accommodation is spacious, clean and very comfortable, with a high quality of maintenance. The setting overlooking Skaill Bay and Skara Brae is stunning. Cliff walks at Yesnaby, Marwick Head and Birsay are within easy reach. The Neolithic sites are fascinating and we particularly enjoyed our visits of Steness and Brodgar led by the highly knowledgeable rangers. We will certainly return before too long.

First rate service by staff onsite. Very informative tour around the house. Recomend to anyone in the area.

Really interesting to walk around. Lots of rooms from different eras and the family tree information dotted around was fascinating. We didn’t have to wait to enter after arriving and entry was included in the ticket that we got to see Skara Brae. You could also see pictures of how it used to look before it was restored.

Our guide was knowledgeable and engaging, bringing to life the history of the site with their vivid narratives. The visual aids and clearly marked pathways further enriched our understanding and appreciation of the site. Parking at the site is ample, and the signage from the road is clear, making the site easily accessible. Despite its popularity, the site never felt overcrowded, allowing for a contemplative and immersive experience. Overall, a visit to Ness of Brodgar is like stepping into a history book, offering a chance to walk in the footsteps of those who shaped this ancient landscape. Its archaeological treasures, natural beauty, and engaging tours make it an unmissable stop on any NC500 trip. The site is more than just an attraction; it's a journey into the heart of Scotland's Neolithic past.

To have a (well-qualified, top-notch) archaeologist guiding us through the entire dig is such a treat! Free entry, but I really feel they should charge something to aid in further funding the dig. We purchased one of the pins to pick a square in the dig to 'sponsor', which is a cute idea. This isn't just a dig ... it's an absolute experience. I understood at the end why some in our group were attending for the second time in a week! Top marks to the local farmers on who's land this dig is taking place.

Fascinating dig into centuries past. Having visited many times over the years always leaves one in total awe of the magnitude of the site and allows one to imagine it's use and significance to Orkney. Hopefully many questions and discoveries will come to light before the final dig in 2024. 💯% worth the visit.

Older than the Pyramids and Stonghenge this is a must see site which closes in 2024 and wont be seen again. Staff are all very friendly and the free tour was fabulous.

Absolutely brilliant! We were lucky enough to be here for one of the open days. To be able to handle finds from the site was a real privilege and made the site come to life. The site itself is impressive, but going on the tour is the highlight as the site and its contents are explained thoroughly by the archaeologists. An absolute gem of a site of world importance that needs understanding and protecting. Buy the guide book, sponsor a square, donate something. Do what you can to help.

How cool to see a dig in progress! And how sad that they only have enough funding for a few months per year. It’s a fascinating site.

Really great walk. Can be a bit wet in places so good footwear is a must but otherwise a relatively straightforward walk. Weather in Orkney can change very dramatically in minutes so best to be prepared for bad weather. Amazing seascape with lots of cliff views, sea stacks and bird life in the fields, on the cliff and in the sea.

An amazing place to stop. Beautiful views from the parking lot as well as miles of trails along the coastline. Can be a bit muddy and slippery l, wear appropriate shoes.

Stunning area, the cliff tops are beautiful. Was a cold and windy day but was still stunning. See the waves hit the rocks. Great place to take a walk on a sunny day.

A lovely cliffside walk, lots of fossilised sand beds to look out for. The views are lovely, but very exposed. The car park is small, we ended up parked on the grass. A coach driver performed a small miracle turning his coach around 180° in a packed car park with a turning space smaller than the footprint of the coach. I suspect he was a timelord. There are no facilities other than the car park, but there were some information boards. Suprising given it was one of the busiest places we stopped.

Beautiful walk - would recommend shoes with decent grip but nothing special required! Great photo opportunities out towards the sea stacks and the old man of hoy is visible (if very small and far away!)

Excellent coastal walk with breathtaking views of the Yesnaby sea stacks. Accessible by car with a small car park. Unfortunately there are no facilities nearby.

Pleasant stop and friendly staff. Beer was good and food selection decent. Gift shop a bit overpriced as I bought a T-Shirt and didn’t realize it was 25lbs….over $30..only option in the area really so a pleasant surprise.

Nice place but very commercial. The staff was not very interested. I wanted to do a tasting but could only choose from four beers on tap. I am a fan of dark beer but I couldn't get the Dark Island and the Dragonhead in my tasting. No info at the tasting, just looked it up myself. Too bad the experience could have been much more… missed opportunity I think. Buy the beer in the supermarket, it’s much cheaper!!

The Orkney brewery is a marvelous and special place. The microbrewery is located in a restored school house. Private tours in the brewery are available - even if you're coming in with 2 persons. But the tours is just one thing: enjoy the very welcoming atmosphere of the tasting room with a very well cooked lunch to make your visit unforgettable! Once you're finished? Well just come back another day because this place is very special, indeed.

Visited the brewery whilst making our annual trip to the beautiful isles of Orkney. The beer and food here is superb but one dark haired female staff member was incredibly rude to the point of being offensive. Such a shame as the other staff were very friendly. I would respectfully suggest to the management that some customer care training should be high on this ladies training needs!

Great people and beer! Unfortunately the taps had been kicked but we got to try the puffin lager which was good! Really wanted to try the northern lights. but albeit, great tasty brewery with a beautiful store front!

We had a blast at this micro brewery. Ewan gave us an information packed tour of the facility, followed by a taste of 3 beers on tap. Dark Island was my fav. We ate lunch in their restaurant which is beautiful and the food was delicious. Homemade soup and sandwiches were excellent. Lots of wonderful desserts but we were stuffed. We bought lots of merch - their art is incredible. Highly recommend!

We arrived as tour group was leaving. Sign said they were full but staff accommodated us without reservation. Great looking spot. After Skara Brae, best spot to stop by. Food is delicious and they have most beers on cask.

Interesting to see the brewing process with tours available. Excellent cafe (must try the Dragonhead cake) and tasting room, as well as a shop.

Great to experience the local ale where it's made! Book a Table and have amazing tasty food before you sample a flight of Ales. Well stocked shop so you can take your favourites home lol. (Delicious Cullen Skink & haddock goujons to name a couple)

Great museum. The added attraction of interactive 3D scans of some shipwrecks at the moment. Well worth a visit...and the ticket is valid a week so you can re-visit.

Small but very interesting

Now cost 6 for adults and can go back in one week time. Worth much more and far more interesting than I thought. So many interesting details of local culture, the war even whales hunting history. With some nature introduction on the upper floor. Introducing seaweed, animals, birds, shells …etc. Highly recommend.

It's a small museum but I loved to learn some of the history of Orkney. Found it really interesting, also you can return for free is you're staying for many days in the town.

Superb tells u history of stromness as a town and its folk full of orcadian culture exhibits about john rae etc and stuff on wildlife off orkney and orkneys wartime past really enjoyable time spent in thier

I spent some time in the museum during my first trip to Orkney. The displays are incredibly fascinating, and I could easily have spent the whole day looking and reading. I was most interested in the lighthouse display and the information on the HMS Hampshire disaster. I will visit again and allow myself more time.

This is a lovely little museum. I love those museums of cabinets packed with artefacts - I am sure I missed plenty of interesting bits, so have lots of reasons to go back! What I did see was interesting and varied. The staff member on duty was brilliant and welcoming. A great place to visit with kids.

This is my favourite kind of museum. Small, but packed full with information and exhibits focusing on specifically local history. There is an entrance fee of £5, but it is well worth it as you can return to the museum using the same ticket and there is so much to take in. Downstairs covers the Scapa Flow stories from the two world wars, merchant navy, and a special exhibition; upstairs is a collection of taxidermy particularly locally seen birds, and the Hudson Bay Company. I was particularly interested in the Cairns exhibition, the current special exhibition. It highlighted the results of recent archaeological research on a number of brochs. It was a fascinating window into a mysterious phenomenon, and outlined new discoveries, theories, and understanding. All this in around 4 metres worth of exhibit.

As I live in Canada , I learned so much about the Hudson Bay Company and 2/3 of them came from Orkney and along the street front the amount of buildings that was connected to Hudson Bay. This is one of the best museums I have ever visited, 2hrs but could have spent 6 hrs

So much history packed into a small space, ranging from Dr John Rae the local artic explorer, the German Fleet scuttling in Scapa Flow WW1, Royal Oak sinking WW2, findings from the Neolithic dig in South Ronaldsay, stuffed birds, a huge turtle, model sailing ships from the 1800s, lighthouses around Orkney, local wedding traditions, and more. Garth at desk was very friendly & informative, drew my attention to the story about John Renton, and the human tooth necklace on loan from the National Museum.

Very interesting museum. Quite a bit of variation, but focused on links to the sea, makes sense considering location.

What's not to like! A lovely, quirky - was previously the Town Hall - museum, stuffed full with interesting artefacts and stories, interactive additions that add even more to your experience. Children's activity sheets mean there is something for everyone. The Curator's Tour is highly recommended, get's your visit off to a great start and you can then spend as much time as you like after the tour taking more time to experience the parts you found most interesting...

Great local museum. Staff are friendly and informative. Got a map of the museum when we entered. Well worth it for a wee place. So much to tell about famous Orcadians and especially John Rae. Great to read about the dig at Cairns but the real reason I loved it was because I got to meet the real Buddo! 😍😍 He is just amazing!!

A beautiful light, bright space with wonderful sea views. Every time I visit there has been great exhibitions as well as their usual collection. It's a lovely gallery. Echoing someone else's comment: a wish for a cafe - Stromness is so badly in need of somewhere cool and calm for a quality coffee and of course that may bring in even more people...

Very clean and modern building with a surprisingly good art collection including a pleasant surprise to see works by Barbara Hepworth. Would be really great if it had a cafe since it's hard to get a coffee in Stromness.

This place deserves to be better known. Why is it not shouting about its fantastic collection of modern art? Items from permanent collection always on display and interesting temporary exhibitions. The well written labels give great insight into the character of Margaret Tait who donated her collection as the starting point. Worth travelling a long way to visit.

A really fascinating and important site, brought to life all the more by the brilliant tour Andy gave a group of us. The weather wasn’t kind, but that almost made the experience even more realistic! Cool place with a lot of amazing history. Make sure you check tour timings and arrive orlelse you wont make it in. The tour is really informative and feels good to be in a place with such amazing history.

An interesting visit all about the 1st and 2nd world wars,inside the mess hall has painted wall by a soldier

A really excellent tour by Andy Hollinrake. His knowledge about the Battery and wartime Orkney is second to none. The painting inside the mess hall is stunning. A really important WWI & WWII site not to be missed.

Fantastic views over towards Hoy!

This is a fantastic place to visit. While there are lots of battery’s on Orkney, this is the only one with accommodation huts still in place. Try to get on one of the guided tours to see the amazing decoration inside the huts.

A short walk along a from the standing stones at Stenness. This ancient settlement is intriguing. Similar to the more famous Skara Brae, but no where near as busy. Well worth a look, the excavations are reasonably new (1984) and it does look as though there is more archeology to be uncovered. All very interesting.

Now known simply as the Barnhouse Settlement, only the reconstructed lower courses of a small section of the village's stonework are visible today.

Not much to see but definitely worth it. Just a short walk from the Standing Stones of Stenness so I wouldn’t miss out on visiting this impressive site.

Just tucked away behind Stone Circle of Stennes but a must visit sight. Well looked after and in an area of such wonder.

Beautiful place, in an open space, accessible to everyone. For those who are interested: it is possible to get nearby by bus from Stromnes.

You maybe disappointed with eating out options in town at nighttime are limited. There are regular bus services to Kirkwall. Small marina, very sheltered. Art galleries, museums, and independent shops in town.

Its Stromness, even lovely on a droll day

Beautiful looking marina! I’m not a user of this Marina, but it looks well kept and there’s some amazing visiting boats I would gym in the Summer.

Lovely place with nice professional staff in a beautiful town!

Small harbor, but well organized for people who must take the ferry back to Scotland. During the waiting you can have a walk in the small town, and nearby there is also a market for buying something for the journey.

Nice friendly people, volunteers run it on behalf of Orkney Marinas in Kirkwall.. High quality pontoons with water (with hoses on a reel!) and electricity. Fob entry security.

Nice place to visit, watching the boats whilst having a brew at Julia's Cafe across the road
