Lovely historic church...beautiful indoors, absolutely stunning outdoors!

Quaint old church, with a beautiful view, much nicer interior than one would guess from the exterior (although exterior is done in rather charming gothic architecture), and a cute story of wishes granted for each of the knots tied with a ribbon at its fence. Make sure not to tie more than three knots, though, and of course - you can't say the wishes out loud. :) When will they come true? When the last of the knots gets undone and the ribbon falls off the fence...

Though it is not that close of the mainstream of Salvador's sightseeing, the basilic is indeed a must to see place. It has such a huge and potent energy that will make the extra effort worth it. It's not the most luxurious church one can visit, but the relevance of its history to the locals (and the history of religious development in the entire state) is more than necessary if you really want to leave with the mystical taste that Salvador leaves in all of us. There is no fee payment, and as a plus, you can visit the beaches located on the outskirts. Don't forget to attach your Senhor do Bonfim ribbon on the gates of the church - legends say you must choose the color you like the most and tie it in with three knots, one for each wish of yours. The color you pick will represent the orixá that protects you.

This was an excellent way to find some respite from the city. There are many meetings and there are many attractions here. The basilica offers an excellent gaze into the past of not only the church but the local customs and city history.

Beautiful church carrying a lot of history. There was service when we arrived and it was crowded but we found seats and could enjoy the amazing interior of the church whilst praying. Be aware about parking and souvenir prices, street vendors try to make money on unadvised tourists.

Very old igreja and beautifully designed the architecture is very historical. I recommend if you want to do photography visit on weekdays cause on weekends and especially on Sunday you will found fully crowded. A must see during your visit to Salvador. A beautiful cathedral that captures the heart and soul of one of the oldest cities established in the new world. It’s local custom to tie ribbons at the gate in front of the church and say a prayer to the Holy Savior of the Bay of all Saints. Inside the cathedral and deep rooted in the Afro-Brazillian Candomblé traditions and the Catholic Ex-Voto, the afflicted offer wax casts in body parts to Saints as thanks or hope of healing them.

It cost 0.15 to get up, and 0.15 to get down. Great that's affordable for EVERYONE! It's just an amazing view from here.

The view from the top level is truly impressive. You can admire the coastline, the lower town, and the elevator itself. Don't forget to check out the view from both sides of the entrance! The view from sea level is also amazing.

It's very cheap at only R$0.15, and conveniently located. It facilitates a 10 minute walk from the ferry to Pelourinho or from Pelourinho to the market. There may be a bit of a line depending on the time of day that you visit. Can also get a bit hot during the day. There are stunning views from the top, a very popular photo op spot, as well as a famous ice cream shop help you beat the heat. Can't miss it on a visit to Salvador and I definitely recommend taking it at least once.

A very traditional landmark of the city, this elevator is known as the first public elevator on the entire Amreica. It connects the up and down part of the town (where the Modelo Market is located). The fee to use is very unexpensive - only BRL 0.15 cents. It's also a good place to enjoy the breathtaking view of the All Saints Bay. Unfortunately, the surroundings are not as safe as expected, but note that this is very common for historical cities in Brazil. I do recommend you to be accompanied by a local to avoid unsafe areas and to avoid the local vendors who can be very insisting. As always, enjoy it during the daytime. The elevator doesn't offer a panoramic view (it was not built with this intention), but it has a glass corridor that can be the place for nice pictures.

This place fully recommends having lots of histories and beautiful arquitetura.

It's a small pastry and ice cream shop situated right next to the elevator. I have to admit that the ice creams are delicious, generously served, and really cheap. You may choose to get them in a cone or a cup. The 'Pave' flavor is amazing! Pave is a Brazilian cake-like dessert.

The history behind the construction is interesting, however it’s not a great place to go. Going up and down costs R$0,15 per visitor and the elevator is too crowded, hot as hell and smells sweat. Great view up there though.

It’s definitely a unique place to visit. It’s the postcard of Salvador. When you go up, you can see the ocean, mercado Modelo, and the fort of São Marcelo. it’s definitely a great way and fastest way to get from cidade baixa to cidade alta.

Well, it’s a simple lighthouse but when the sun is setting, you are gonna enjoy the view and obviously by walking on the same boulevard you get plenty of things to eat and it’s nice

The Barra's Lighthouse is a postcard of Salvador City, at beach with the same name , is the oldest in Brazil but is in a great conservation status. The visit worth cause the historical value, the beautiful neighborhood and the stunning views when you climb until the top! At the building of the old fort, we visited the museum that explain the History of the Lighthouse since the 16th Century and an interesting pictures exposition.

It is a baroque church, a masterpiece! The interior is breathtaking! Totally covered by with gold-colored wood, magnificent. While the cloister is completely covered with a cilco of white and blue mosaics that put in drawings of the judgments of Horace. Definitely worth the visit. The cost is 15 Brazilian Real, less than 3 dollars.

Igreja e convento de Sao Francisco De Asis is a highly recommended stop on your next visit to Pelourinho Salvador. It's stunning from the outside and lights up beautifully at night. The real beauty however is seen in the fine detailing and elaborate use of gold on the inside. The cost to enter is only R$5 / US$1( in March 2022 ), a price thats more than worth it. The pictures really don't do it justice. They don't provide tour guides so I would advise visiting as a part of a walking tour of pelourinho, to get details on the history. Definitely add it to your list of must do in salvador.

this building is so so beautiful. The courtyard is covered in tiles that are donated by the portugese king in 1795 (according to my guide), and the inside is covered in gold. I cant even begin to describe it. There are so many statures and sculptures , its breaktaking. Theres also a cemetery of some sort where some ancient bones lay. I heard it also contains the living quarters for some reverened father. This place was really beautiful and its a must see if you ever are in Salvador

Gorgeous and interesting Church We stumbled across this during our walk around Pelourinho and what a gem it is. There were flowers laid down the aisle of the chapel so I assume there was soon to be a wedding there and it looked truly stunning. Walking around to can go into the Throne Room and Crypts followed by other rooms with information and artifacts. Just after the Crypts there was an outside area but we didn't venture out there as it seemed this was the reception area with the same flowers as the Chapel so likely for the wedding but it was gorgeous.

A marketplace which has 2 floors full of Vendors who sell various things. ⭐ You can find a lot of interesting souvenirs. Definitely for tourists. ⭐ The variety of souvenirs is very grand. You will definitely be able to find something you like— if you're not overwhelmed by the choices. ⭐ Nice vendors and easy to navigate. At the top floor there is an ATM if you need cash. ⭐ If you're hungry, there are spots to eat and drink as well. Most of the stalls only take Pix or cash! So you will need to get some from the ATM. Items here are a bit more pricey. I would recommend going to the upper city to shop for more souvenirs if you only have a card on you! But it is worth a visit.

Mercado Modelo is a famous market in Salvador, Brazil. It is a popular tourist destination where visitors can find a variety of goods, including handicrafts, clothing, souvenirs, and local food and drinks.

Great tourists attraction. When we went it was under construction parts of it so a bit of a mess but you can find nice souvenirs and they have restaurants on the second floor with nice view and veey cool staff.

Massive market full of unique items and food from around Brazil and beyond. A must see for anyone visiting Salvador and looking for a gift or memorable souvenir to bring home to remember forever. There are a number of restaurants and other food vendors. The market is also close to other top local tourists attractions.

It ia currently under renovation work. There are quite a few booths that were missing. It is highly recommended to buy many of the excellent chocolate produced in Bahia. They are of an excellent high quality and have many wonderful varieties. The booth in the picture is great place to buy these chocolates.

I enjoyed my shopping experience there. It's the only place among the few that I visited, that I found some people speaking English. They also have an ATM on the second floor, very safe if you'd like to withdraw Reais and shop around Salvador. There's an open market near the Salvador sign where you can braid your hair too.

This is indeed one of the greatest and most know trademarks for anyone visiting Salvador for the first time. Currently, the market is passing by a renovation so its split in two different sections. But both have basically the same kind of products available. At first, I've thought this would be similar to São Paulo's Municipal Market; however, here you will find just two or three options of restaurants with most of the other places taken by souvenirs stores. It can be a great place if you're looking for this type of store but be attentive of the prices - you can similar items for huge price variance. Tip: things here are cheaper than most of the stores of Pelourinho. Extra tip: though the market itself may not be what you're expecting take the opportunity to visit the marine located a few steps of it. The view is stunning and a good place for nice photos.

The market has all kinds of souvenirs that are typical for Bahia. It's full of tourists and easy to reach from other sights. I was harassed by a bum though outside of the market, so take care. No need to go there twice.

Make sure to agree the price of sun beds/ drinks before ordering. Ensure the price for the beds is for the full day not per hour before sitting. DO NOT pay with card you will be scammed.

Beautiful stadium. The view to the field is amazing from every angle, regardless of whether you are at pitch level or very high up. Nice "happy hour" before the match, with live music and many food trucks. Only downside is the labyrinth path from parking lot to stadium - it doesn't make sense - but not enough to take away a star.

Went to watch Bahia vs Corthians. Good game, but the place was kind of a mess. Not less than I was expecting though, spilled drinks every once in a while, long waits during intermissions. Nothing out of place for a sports arena. Seats were small but we hardly sat anyway. Everyone just moved towards the edge of the viewing area. Prices were great, especially compared to the US. It's great that going to a game fits in most people's pockets here, and is a great way to spend a day. I recommend going, even if only just once if you're not a sports fan like me.

It is a very nice beach even though it has lots of rocks along the shore.

To get from the center was very frustrating and took me 2.5 hrs to get there. Do not rely on google maps or moovit in terms of the bus number (many buses have no number) or the bus stop to get on (as many drivers did not stop for me as it was not the right one) or even the route. Ask many people and look for a bus sign that states it is a stop. Many buses don't display numbers, and if they do, the number switches quickly that you may not have the time to see it from far to hail it down!

It’s a small museum in a very beautiful setting, right by the sea in some old Portuguese colonial buildings. The café is a great place to relax after seeing the exhibition. Overall, it is certainly worth a visit but fails to reach its full potential as the main modern art institution in Salvador. While there are interesting artworks on show, the museum fails to engage with the local community, its history and art. The social and racial background of the artists selected for the exhibition, predominantly white and upper-middle class, fails to showcase how the rich Afro-Brazilian culture of Salvador has something unique to contribute to modern and contemporary art. Artworks may represent subjects closer to the local reality, and indeed Afro-Brazilian and indigenous motives are common, but the perspective from which they are seen is that of a predominantly white elite. Indeed, some exhibited works by white artists display signs of racial stereotyping in the depiction of Afro-Brazilian subjects, which the curation fails to critically engage with. An attempt was made by the curation to include in the exhibition what they call ‘popular art’, presumably to address this gap. Yet, the chosen artworks are almost always presented as anonymous and with limited contextualisation, a poor curatorial effort which rather than building a bridge between different artistic traditions appears to make implicit value judgements about their relative rank and worth.

The sitio where the MAM lies is indeed one of the most beautiful areas to visit in Salvador. I recommend you visit the infamous Lina Bo Bardi's helicoidal staircase and watch the stunning sunset here if it's sunny, especially during the summer. The museum itself however doesn't have a fixed exhibition or collection of its own.

Great photo opportunity. Iconic Salvador scenery. Other reviewers have remarked that parking can be difficult but honestly, I never have that problem; I just pay a few reais to the attendant working nearby and go on with my day. There's normally someone leaving and I can snag their spot. (I also rarely if ever go on weekends). There's a bar where you can grab a drink, as well as a drink stand (they accept cash & Pix!) - I highly recommend grabbing a caldo de cana and watching the sunset from here.

A spetacular cultural experience The ancient church of slaves in Salvador during the colonial period of Brazil. Here the masses are performed in a Catholic fashion but with a strong emphasis on music. Usually the traditional Catholic songs are played to African drums beat I came into the church when someone was being baptised and I could live a unique experience. Though I knew all the songs, the music was still full of incredibly energy. It was amazing to see old and young people all dancing and singing together to drums rhythm.
