I had the incredible opportunity to visit Dochula Pass in June, and it was nothing short of amazing. Nestled at an altitude of 3,100 meters, this mountain pass offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas. Our journey to Dochula Pass began early in the morning, as we drove through the winding roads from Thimphu. As we ascended, the lush greenery and vibrant flora made the journey itself an enchanting experience. When we finally reached the pass, the sight that greeted us was absolutely stunning. The most iconic feature of Dochula Pass is the 108 chortens (stupas), known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens. These stupas were built in honor of Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives in a battle against Indian insurgents. Walking among these chortens, you can feel the deep sense of history and spirituality that permeates the area. One of the highlights of my visit was the clear view of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. On a clear day, you can see several of Bhutan's highest peaks, including Gangkar Puensum, the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. We were fortunate to have good weather, and the sight of the majestic mountains against the clear blue sky was simply awe-inspiring. There is also a lovely cafe at Dochula Pass where we enjoyed a warm cup of traditional Bhutanese tea. Sitting there, sipping tea and taking in the serene beauty of the landscape, was an experience I will cherish forever. The cool, crisp mountain air and the tranquil ambiance made it a perfect spot for relaxation and reflection. In addition to the natural beauty, Dochula Pass also hosts the Dochula Druk Wangyal Festival in December, which celebrates Bhutanese culture and traditions with vibrant performances and festivities. Although I visited in June, the stories of this festival added another layer of cultural richness to my understanding of the place. Overall, my visit to Dochula Pass was an unforgettable experience. The combination of stunning natural scenery, historical significance, and peaceful atmosphere makes it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Bhutan. I highly recommend taking the time to explore this beautiful pass and soak in all it has to offer.

The pass is at an elevation of 3100m on the way to Punakha from Thimphu. This is an absolute beautiful place where you get to see panoramic view of Himalaya and snow clad peaks on a clear day if you are lucky. The monuments built to celebrate the victory of 4th king are beautiful and you can witness valley covered with rhododendron in April. There are view points and meditation caves in the compound. It’s a very peaceful place to spend some quality time. There is a nice but little bit expensive roadside cafe.

Absolutely amazing views of the southern portion of the Himalayas including Bhutan’s highest peak and the highest unclimbed peak of the world, Gangkar Puensum. Just do note that the temperatures can get quite cold here as you are located at 3100 m above sea level.

Dochula pass is a great place to stop, stretch and relax on the way from Thimphu to Punakha. Spectacular stupas complex, nice cafeteria and a view. I wasn't lucky today, however, the mist blocked the view of the Himalayan Range.

Surrounding the main statue at the Buddha point. Are these various statues in various sizes. The entire place look magnificent surrounded by the mountain and the blue sky. Sometimes you see cloud coverings the statue and it is a picture worth capturing when you are driving by. By the way, do you know that in bhutan, every Thursday is a traffic free day lowering the reliance on cars and less pollution. I think it's a fantastic move.

Great Buddha Dordenma is a huge Buddha statue placed over the mountain in Bhutan.Construction of this amazing beauty started in 2006 and finished in 2015.This is 177 ft High.This buddha statue took $47 million dollars to built.The great Buddha Dordenma is made of Bronze and glided in Gold.You will be amazed with the surroundings view of this place.Strongly recommended for a tourist to visit if you are in Bhutan.Respect every people's religion.

This giant statue of Buddha is visible from almost everywhere in Thimphu. But it’s majestic size becomes apparent only when you are up close. The base has a monastery within with some interesting statutes and artwork. You can either climb the steep flights of steps or drive up to the base. Part of the steps are still under construction, and maybe completed soon. Photography is permitted outside but not inside the monastery. The admission fee is Rs 1000 per person for foreigners so you can consider just viewing from a distance.

Its the largest Buddha statue, a must visit place when you are in Bhutan. Early morning /evening time is best time to visit. You get a great view from the top.

What a serene place! The energy is pulsating here and I felt like I received the blessings of the masters. The Buddha statue is stunning and seems to loom large over the entire Thimphu city. Thousands of monks were chanting in unison here as there was some religious ceremony going on when I visited here. The daikinis or Goddess statues also add to the aura of this pristine place. Entry was free.

Calm and serene shrine! The Buddha is beautiful! We can climb upto the top to have a closer look! One of the oldest shrine! Awesome place to pray and meditate!

We visited mid morning and there were already many locals either walking clockwise around the brilliant white building or sitting silently in a shady spot meditating. It was constructed in 1974 to honour the third king of Bhutan by the king’s mother. Well worth a visit when in Thimpu.

The Memorial Chorten also known as Thimphu Chorten/Memorial Stupa is one of the mostly visited monuments by locals to shuffle meditatively around the chorten, daily worship and to offer butter lamps. It is a great place, the stupa is really big, the flowers nearby are also very beautiful, there are also 4-5 prayer wheels near the entry

One of the biggest stupas in the town. One of the holiest places in Buddhism, it has a great meaning to local people. It is the centre of center faith. A very beautifully designed place also has a place to remember the loved ones who died. Great places, really liked it a lot..

Visited on 26th August 2022. This stupa was built in 1974 to honor the third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. It is popularly known as "the most visible religious landmark in Bhutan". This stupa does not enshrine human remains. Only the Druk Gyalpo’s photo in a ceremonial dress adorns a hall in the ground floor.

The Memorial Chorten in Thimphu was built in 1974 in memory of the third king of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who is considered the "father of modern Bhutan" for his efforts in modernizing and developing the country. The chorten was built as a place for people to pay their respects and offer prayers to the late king and to promote peace, prosperity, and well-being for the nation and its people.

Seemed a good place to visit however I personally feel the entry to the monument is quite high. 500 nu is a little too much. I would give it a skip and take pictures from outside

Visited the memorial chorten, Thimphu in May 2023. It was a calm, beautiful Stupa. Multiple tourists along with devotees were present.

WHITE, CLASSICAL & ELEGANT STUPA !  The Vase shaped chorten of almost 50 years in city centre.  Inside explore paintings, statues, shrines, carvings ETC… all so beautiful.  Study the exterior and interior carefully to get an insight of Buddhist philosophy.  Top floor gallery offers a spectacular city view.  There are in total 4 entrances, but just one is in use.

National Memorial Chhorten ( Thimpu) is one of many tourist attractions, the entrance fee of which is Rs. 500 per person. The entire campus is beautifully developed and well maintained. Devotees can be seen moving around and sitting all around the campus!! Visit and experience yourself!! The Memorial was constructed in 1974 by the present king in the memory of his father!!

The crown jewel of Thimphu, Motithang Takin Preserve is a protected area where the national animal of Bhutan, Takin, is preserved. A half an hour walk here would unveil many exotic birds and animals to you, who wander around the area freely and in the most natural of habitat. Overflowing with serenity, the wildlife here is exquisite and should be seen once. Located in the Motithang district in Thimphu, the Royal Takin Preserve was originally a mini-zoo but later turned into a wildlife preserve. The king found it unfair to bind its national animals within definite boundaries and hence declared the area as a wildlife preserve, where the animals can roam around freely. Entry fee is 100 INR ( 100BTN) . You need to fit enough to walk across this lush green covered preserve. You need to keep minimum 2 /3 hrs for this place to visit completely . Sovenior shops / eatery is there but charge is quite high.

Well maintained park, got to see Takin , birds, deer , they charge Rs.300 for the park. Nice walk way to enjoy trees n jungle trail feel Open windows available so that you can touch the animal. Overall nice experience

Loved this statue and the temple directly below. Visited on the full moon day that is very auspicious and the great hall was filled with chanting and prayers. The view outside is spectacular.

The intention behind the reserve is very noble, preserving the national animal. Even the efforts taken to make the site pleasurable for visiting is commendable. A really good cause.

Must visit zoo to watch the national animal of Bhutan, the Takin…

I was happy to spot our national animal. The entry fee for locals is nu. 50. The preserve is in the transformation stage. Some walkways and vintage points are under construction.

While it is a chance to see the endangered Takin, the national animal of Bhutan, personally, I hate to see animals in enclosures. Although the guide reassured me that the animals in the enclosures were rescued or injured, I think they would lose their natural instincts and become dependent on human beings which would make them more vulnerable.

Royal Takin Preserve is a small but well-planned facility where visitors can take a look at Takins-Bhutan national animals and an animals from Bhutanese Mythology. It's worth visiting and check your hiking fitness at the same time while walking around.

Don’t miss the chance to watch Royal Takin if you are around Thimphu. Entry fee is Nu 300. Volunteer works were ongoing as part of maintenance and renovation during our visit. Hope Bhutan Tourism will put more effort in developing the preserve more.

This preserve for Bhutan's curious national animal was originally established as a zoo, but the fourth king decided this was not in keeping with Bhutan's environmental and religious convictions, and the takin were released into the wild. Unfortunately the animals were so tame they took to wandering the streets of Thimphu looking for food, so this enclosed area was set aside to keep them safe.

A lot of construction work going on . It understand it’s needed but they should tell the visitors about noise and blocked ways in advance. Saw one Takin at least. The other animals (deer ) were only in a very small part of the enclosure because of this.

Nice place amongst the lap of the nature. But don’t expect a typical Zoo. Very few an inmates.

I've been to the Royal Takin Preserve in Motithang, Thimphu so many times, I've lost count. It's a breathtaking place, home to the Takins, Bhutan's national animal. And these animals, they're not quite goats, not quite oxen - unique and intriguing, just like Bhutan itself. Each time I visit with our travel groups, it feels brand new, fresh, exciting. I sometimes catch myself wondering how many visitors these Takins have seen. Have they seen so many faces, that they've started to recognize a few? Like, maybe mine? If these Takins could talk, I wonder if they'd start greeting me by name!

Was great to see the Takin, the national animal of Bhutan, with some deer, boars, bird and a yak. The area looked a bit barren given the climate so if this was tidied up a little, it would definitely be more worth it, but nevertheless a great visit.

Amazing since improvements of last year. Elevated walkways guarantee you'll see the incredible animals. Bakery concession, Wild Cloud, offers best baked goods in Bhutan.

Visited Royal Takin Preserve in Bhutan. The takins were cool, and it's a nice place, but facilities could be better. The entry fee felt a bit much for what's offered. Still, if you're into wildlife, it's worth checking out. The entry is 300 Rupees.

Watch out for a queer looking animal, which believed to me a mix of goat and cow, which has baffled zoologist. The Bhutanese believe that this animal was created by Lama Drukpa Kuenley. (The Devine Madman)

It's a place where a variety of animals like a takin, render, etc are being able to see. Their, Environment is very calm and you can even refresh your mind just being over there. Entry tickets can be bought at Nu 50 for local people and for tourists it is Nu 300 and you can enjoy there with limitless time. It's located just above the Motithang and below Sangaygang. Inside there you can even have a cup of coffee (from coffee shop☕) as the temperature is low and you can enjoy ur adventure. You can see the different species by sky walk railing that is being built around the fences(clearly).

I wanted my brother to send some edible stuffs from Bhutan and they were very rude. The way they talk to people in a rude manner as if Bhutan Post belongs to their father’s. You could have just told if certain things are allowed or not, instead of poking your nose in what they are sending. BTW a Country’s development has nothing to do with what eatables (noodles) are available and please be polite.😣🙏

It's a place if you want to send things to your love on within country and outside country. It should be one of the place which tourist and local should visit to see the postal journey of Bhutan as it got museum in the ground floor.

Yes this is a Post Office but this is also a tourist spot! Why? They print stamps with your pictures on them! Our guide asked if we wanted Bhutanese stamps with our pictures on them and we thought why not?

Tuesday, 21st November I came here for my money collection which was sent through western union. Very surprised, Bhutan post don’t have any cash or nothing to give . It was very urgently send from US paying high tex and all. But what’s the point of sending money in urgent. When Bhutan post have nothing to give . So I made mistake of sending through western union….

It’s the highest post office in the world! So was defy on my list. Apart from namesake the place has much to offer. A beautiful museum outlines the history of bhutan said in the unique language of stamps. I particularly liked the part commemorating the reign of the last ruling Druk- a heartfelt display of the felt love and loyalty of a nation towards its monarch. The monarch’s policies did take the country to new heights and made it what it is today, a clean green and happy nation.

Its a great museum in the country regarding postal and history of Bhutan. Founded in 1960. You will find huge collection of stamps, short film and envelope. You will find all special release of stamp on special day and events here. You can purchase stamps and envelope for your personal collection.

A place where rural people coming to Thimphu for the first time and seeing the tall clock makes them wonder and they tell the tale of clock to their grand children back home. And a best place to showcase anything too.

Situated in the heart of town, Clock Tower Square is an architecture marvel and a pleasure to eyes. It is basically a tower with four clock faces, which makes it different from any other building or structure in Bhutan. One of the most popular site among visitors, people usually visit here in the evening to enjoy the beautiful paintings and carvings. There are many restaurants, souvenir shops and hotels near this tower, making it one of the most busy sites in the town. Sometimes live music takes place in around here, which adds to the ambience of the clock tower square. There are many shopping centres around, so you can shop for souvenirs from your relatives and friends. For kids, there is a small playground also, which a good picnic spot and a good place to spend your evening. Spinning the colourful prayer wheels is another fun task to do here. If you are lucky enough, then you might catch a concert or a small play happening around here.

Amazing place! Middle in the city. Must visit place in Thiphu. It has an open Pavilion. Good place to organize any cultural program including concerts. Lots of restaurants around it. Has a pub in a corner. Handicrafts shops are just across the road. Main road is adjacent to it in the left side. Hotel Druk is in one side.

It is the heart of the city. The Thimphu Clock Tower Square is located near city center and serves as a hub for the "locals' to get together and have activities at this location. The center of the square featuring a four-faced clock tower covered in Bhutanese carvings, plus fountains & prayer wheels. Numerous shops, cafes and hotels are around this. And crowded specially during the weekends when they organize many events.

It used to be an oasis in the main thimphu city. Centrally located and a great place to hang out. Currently seems to be under maintainence. There are also some good cafes around it.

This place is in the heart of Thimpu city. There is a clock tower in the middle of this place which is carved beautifully. Surrounded by steps where people can sit and pass the time with friends and family. In evenings, some groups come here to practice. We found a group of boys performing for their show, which was really amazing. Also there are shops & restaurants alongside.

For Nu 3mn and for a period of 1 month, the following works were completed: - Repainting of the clocktower - Clearing of clogged drains and replacement of stormwater drains and dolep cover - Chipping of the damaged sitting gallery including steps and redoing of plastering work - Removal of defunct fountains and damaged benches - Leveling of clock tower base flooring by reducing one level to make it user-friendly for all - Removing the mani lhakhor as it was being misused by being spit on or used as hiding places for thrash - Renovation of staircase (towards Changlimithang) including widening of the same - Replacement of broken/cracked doleps or kota stone The benches and greening works are yet to be completed.

In brief I would say this is the place where one should stay as a tourist. It's a happening place. Been there few days ago they had awesome night band , street is well lighted up. Shops restaurants and cafeterias you name it. Traffic is well managed safe zebra crossings for pedestrians, and the best of all good eating options , for non-vegetarians it's a spread. I Do recommend visiting and staying there.

Best place to learn about Bhutanese textile culture with all the textile that exist in Bhutan can be seen here. Next to textile museum you will find international corporations and some agency. Big surrounding with parking lot. Its very clean toilet facilities are there too. Don't miss if you want to learn about textile history and culture that existed in Bhutan.

Visited this textile museum. The collection is awesome and the heritage of Bhutanese textile narrated wonderfully through maps, models, pictures and storytelling documentary. Sadly they don't allow clicking pictures inside the museum.

Beautiful work. It took months to make some of the textiles due to the intricate designs. They also showed us patterns made for the royal family. All handmade.

Preserving Bhutan's Traditional Textile Designs. The Bhutan Royal Textile Academy had been established to preserve the traditional Bhutanese style textile. They have a large complex which houses a museum, and rented to BPC, different offices and a restaurant. The office building is well maintained and interior are decorated with modern fittings. This academic building is very large and there are lots of offices and restaurants nearby. If you come to the place please follow the entrance and exit. There are many entrances to go into the building.

This museum is not for profit and having Royal Queen of Bhutan's permission to showcase Bhutanese artifact. This place is but costly which particularly charges different prices to different countries. For Indian it charges RS 💯 or NU 100 or for SAARC people. You can see major weaving habits of different regions of Bhutan along with different kinds of cotton used to knit fabrics. This place is also famous to purchase Bhutan t-shirts which you can find outside too but quality over here is better✌️☺️

An organization which works to preserve and promote weaving art of Bhutan. It showcase Textile arts through various exhibitions. It has large exhibition gallery which has many pieces from all over Bhutan. You van also see live weaving and embroidery session at its Weaving Centre.

A good display of Bhutan's heritage. There is a restaurant inside the museum area which is nicely decorated and offers their traditional food. It's very expensive though. but it's a good experience. They even show you how traditional Bhutanese people eat with their utensils.

Nice place to visit. It will remind you the heritage of Bhutan. We enjoyed our visit. There is shop near the entrance. You can buy many stuffs from there. In the museum compound they made and sell corn burned wine. That was good.

Its always a pleasure to understand how our Culture have evolved to this present stage. When we see such Museums we understand what we were and what we are now. This Folk Heritage Museum of Bhutan is another good example of of preserving the old memories. The also make here the Traditional Wine here. The wine and some handicrafts etc. are sold here. Must visit in my view as you get to see a traditional Bhutanese house hold . It is an actual traditional home, renovated and refurbished and explaining the functiona of each floor along with authentic items like utensils, tools , weapons and clothing. National Library of Bhutan or NLB was established in 1967 and possesses a wide collection of 6100 Bhutanese and Tibetan books, xylographs and manuscripts as well as 9000 printing boards and wooden printing blocks for religious books. It has one of the largest holdings of Buddhist Literature in the entire world and it is one of the best places to visit in Thimpu. It has a dedicated collection and promotes religious and cultural heritage of Bhutan in the form of ancient printed resources related to history, religion, traditions, and culture of Bhutan. Highlights: The building is two-storied with staff accommodations, administrative offices along with technical equipments like computers, microfilm section, separate room for wooden books and much more. Located in: Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Open from : 9:30 am to 5:00 pm (Monday to Friday) in March to October and 9:30 am to 4:00 pm in November to February and remains closed on government holidays and weekends. It is a complete representation of Buddha.

Bhutan established the National library in the year of 1967 or so. This beautiful building is situated in the Kawajangsa area of Thimphu, above the Royal Thimphu Golf Course and near to the Folk Heritage Museum and is easily recognisable from the facade. It is one of the most visited places of the country.

It’s a small library in Thimphu but earns the honour as a national institution of Bhutan. The collection is predominantly in Bhutanese language with some in English. The flower beds at the entrance are excellent. One has to take out the shoes before entry. However, photography is possible. A significant attraction at this place is an enormous sized published book. It contains only a hundred and forty-four pages. But, a new page is flipped through once in a month. Thus to appreciate the entire volume, a viewer will need twelve years! As expected, the library had a desolate look. Was it a reflection of redundancy of printed material?

The National Library of Bhutan was first established in 1967 under the patronage of HM Queen Ashi Phuntso Choden (1911–2003), with a small collection of precious texts. The library was initially housed within the central tower (utse) of Tashichodzong. Later, due to its growing collection, it had to move to a building in the Changgangkha area of Thimphu. To provide a permanent home for the sacred religious books and manuscripts in the growing collection, construction of the present four-storeyed eight-cornered traditional building, which looks like the central tower temple of a Bhutanese Dzong, in the Kawajangtsa area of Thimphu was initiated. The cost of the construction of this building was borne entirely by the Royal Government of Bhutan without any foreign aid. This building, which houses the collection of traditional texts, was inaugurated and consecrated as a temple by H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche on November 23, 1984 in order to provide a sacred space for the religious books which form the bulk of the collection. The library moved into its permanent home at the end of 1984 under the auspices of the then Special Commission for Cultural Affairs.

C.T.A.S. is the only private institution that offers training of traditional arts and crafts in Bhutan. In addition, the school serves as an orphanage providing free tuition, food and lodging to the most disadvantaged youth of the region. The limited resources make it difficult for students to continue their training. In consequence, some of them cannot pursue their education and strive to pursue their dreams. The school was founded by Thrimdep Choki Dorji who was keen on teaching arts to the rural and economically unstable children. These kids were interested in learning arts but couldn't make it to the National Painting School. Dorji's interest and zeal to keep the art alive, led him to establish Choki Art School. An excursion here will show you all aspects of Bhutanese traditional art skills, such as wood carving, painting and clay art. Being a tiny place on the valley of Kabesa, Thimphu, the school corridors are adorned with the artwork of young talents. Timings : 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Entry Fee : BTN 100 ( INR 100)

Arrange for a guided tour of the Choki Traditional Art School, where you can see various levels of students learning wood-carving, sewing, painting, drawing, etc. The concentration and skill of the students is fascinating. The school used to focus on boarding male students, but having girls as day students, until a young British girl visited the school and asked why there were no girls. When she was told that the school did not have funds to build a girls' dormitory, the girl went back to London and engaged her friends in bake sales and other projects to raise money for the girls' dorm. Her father was so impressed with his daughter's tenacity and generosity that he donated the remainder of the funds - and today, there is a girls' dorm at the Choki School. There is a gift shop that features work done by the students, so buying products is a great way to support the school, but also have a hand-made piece of Bhutanese art.

Choki Traditional Art School is the only privately run charitable institute that provides traditional arts & crafts training to the underprivileged youths of Bhutan. The school provides free tuition, food and lodging facility and promotes the rich cultural heritage of Bhutan.

This school helps kids sharpen their skills to make themselves self-reliant. It is located in the village of Kabisa which is 10 km from Thimphu. This art school is one of the most interesting places to visit in Bhutan. In Choki school, kids are taught and trained for traditional arts, painting and much more. One of the major objectives of the school is to preserve the traditional Bhutanese art.

The name Simtokha literally means “Atop a Demon” and the legend associated with the dzong’s construction tells us that it was built in order to subdue an evil spirit that was harassing travelers in the region. Simtokha Dzong is one of the oldest Dzongs in Bhutan and worth visiting.

Tango Dorden Tashithang Buddhist University was established in 2015. It is located 13km north of the capital city Thimphu at the base of lower Tago called Dodeyna. This university covers an area of over 12 acres with beautiful surroundings covered by natural green forest. Upper Tago covers up the beautiful hill since under the reign of Gyelsey Tenzin Rabgay This University is constructed under the recommendation of His Majesty the king to further promote and preserve the relevance of the precious teachings Dharma. His Majesty the king and the Royal family attended over the grand consecration ceremony on 22/12/2015 presided by His Holiness the Je Khenpo.

Built as a monastery, the institute now serve as an educational institute for monks to study the religious texts. The monastery is built upon a cave as per a popular belief. This place is also popular among adventure lovers as there is a route that you can take to hike up to here. It is held sacred and significant by Buddhists. 👍👍

It’s a half an hour ride towards the north of Thimphu city and hike around one hour from the road point to reach to this place. The new building is the classrooms for the monks and scholars learning Buddhism but don’t miss to visit the tango old monastery 5 mins walk further to this. Very scared monastery and attractions of this cave monastery is the Bumpa (holy water container) which was said or see it has no edges of it.

Simply Bhutan was on my list so that i was better able to understand Bhutanese culture before my trip took off. When we visited it was way too crowded the guides themselves felt overwhelmed and tried to finish the tour as soon as possible. The experience was not bad but the crowd made it impossible to spend enough time there. Wine tasting, butter tea, local folk dance etc were really good, thus the three stars. Also, archery and exploring Bhutanese culture in brief is worth it. The entry is a little on the higher side charging 1000.

A great experience altogether as the entire experience in Simply Bhutan was good. It is a must visit for people visiting Bhutan as it shows the culture and local food. Loved all the Datshi there.

The entry ticket to Simply Bhutan is little expensive (Rs.1000 per head) For that matter all entries to various palaces and museums are expensive at at least Rs.500 per head. The museum is small but with good presentation of Bhutanese culture. folk arts etc...

This is a typical “mini” Bhutanese village. They showcase the olden days daily lifestyle and entertainment they had. The narrator speaks very fluent English and she is very clear. We had a very good understanding of their culture.

CAPITAL’S FANTASTIC CULTURAL OFFERING  Pay money to enter, but there is a lot of fun and creativity inside.  Immersive museum, with a nice layout, and period furniture, and art objects.  There is a lot of entertainment and some games.  A photographer’s delight.  Centrally located, bustling at all times, with a nice hostess.  Emblem of Bhutanese culture and history. Don’t leave Thimphu without stopping here !

Tourist Trap: For 1000 rupees ($20 AUD), you can’t help but feel that you got partially scammed in a country that is full of selfless people. Feel free to avoid unless you really want to go. While we all were open minded and excited by the prospect about learning of Bhutanese culture, what transpired was sub-par at best. The attitude of a select few members of staff made it seem like our visit was a joke and constantly smirking at each other while talking to us, with what appeared to be inside jokes and performing the dances was not appreciated at all. That being said, a few of the female dancers when we joined in were very nice, selfless and helpful, so praise deserves to be praised. The exhibits are decently set up, but left more to be desired with the kitchen setup full of plastic replicas rather than the actual items. What was the most interesting and amazing was the artist who carved paintings and sculptures using his feet and feet only, Pema Tshering who is truly inspiring. Beyond that the rest of the visit seemed like a waste of time, money and was just awkward for the most part.

This is a great place to visit and learn about Bhutan culture. We are told about the history of the kings, some of the artifacts used in old times and shown various things used traditionally in festivals, house making, kitchen, etc. There was a live demonstration of the song and dance done during house mud wall construction and traditional dance. We were invited to participate in dance, traditional stairs climbing and archery as well. It's a great experience if you are not familiar with any of the traditions of Bhutan and nearby areas.

Not much to be seen for those visiting from the countries like India!! Very small in size, few students can be seen learning drawing and painting as well as carving!!

Oct 2017. Just a place to see the Bhutan government training the locals in Bhutanese craft skills. Nothing interesting for tourists. The training is provided free by the government and saw more talking in the classroom than learning from teachers.

I am really surprised that some people have given three stars or less to this place. This is a place where you learn to appreciate the usually overlooked skills of life. Right from silver smithing to embroidery to sculpting this institute's principles are very appreciable. I had a look at the works of the students there and it was jaw-dropping.

I loved visiting this art school. It was great to see the students working on traditional Bhutanese art. Incredibly talented students creating incredible pieces of art. Definitely go here!

Great place.students of various grades are taught to craft and art and embroider and metallargy classes in traditional bhutanese arts and heritage.wonderful handiwork.also if u want to buy souvenirs this place is the cheapest.

I have studied there for almost 4 years of traditional painting and "It's a must-visit for tourists and all."

On our trip to Bhutan, we asked to see an art school as I love art. I have difficulty understanding the low ratings for this school. We had an amazing experience there and the traditiional art being created was beautiful. The mehods of art taught there seek to preserve the country's history. It is a school that teaches students how to replicate and repair ancient art. We learned so such about weaving with back strap looms, creating intricate embroidery, boot making, wood craving perfect repilicates, painting ancient dragons, etc. We could have stayed at the school all day instead of a half day it was so fascinating. I feel fortunate to have been able to purchased four cravings and three paintings by fifth year students to begin home.
