Once in a lifetime hike. Ghibli fan or not, if you’re visiting Yakushima you must visit here and at least see the Taiko Iwa / Drum Rock. The path to the Rock is fairly straightforward and clearly marked. The descent from the rock down is steep so I would recommend bringing a hiking pole if you have one. If you fancy a longer, more challenging route, definitely consider heading to one of the other alternatives as well as fitting in the Drum Rock. On a good day, you’ll find deer running around the moss covered forests - truly magical. Purchasing tickets at Shiratani gives you ¥200 off the entry tickets to Yakusugi Land - so definitely consider taking advantage of that if you will be in Yakushima long enough. Piece of advice regarding food - you can’t eat/drink in the moss forest area or the Rock, so consider taking a break at the rest spot 20 minutes before Drum Rock to refresh.

An incredible experience. This tranquil place is inspirational to walk through and leaves a lasting impression on your mind. This is the place that inspired the film 'Princess Mononoke'. There's so much to see. I saw monkeys on the way in, and the entrance has a beautiful waterfall that's worth the drive for that alone. There's lots of mossy rocks and trees, several Japanese trees whose age dates back to around the years of the Roman Republic, and lots of waterfalls and streams. Some of the paths have steep climbs, and it was physically challenging in parts, though I had no hiking gear bar the boots. Hiking poles would've made the return journey more enjoyable. Recommended times on the map are conservative. I did the longest walk which recommends 4 hrs, though even with many photo breaks and some rest it was still only about 3 hrs or less. Time the course you want to do depending on your fitness level, and climbing confidence. If you want to give yourself time and do multiple trails, go first thing in the morning and pack water and snacks. Though one water bottle is enough as the water from the streams are delicious.

We hiked from Shiratani, through Kusugawa junction, till the Arakawa trail entrance. It took 5 hours, including numerous stops to take pictures and relax. I am a regular hiker, and it was the more serene hike ever for me. The forest is very natural. The layers of moss all over the trees, stones, bridges, give it a spectacular vibe. There are numerous streams flowing down the mountains. These streams are the reason for the moss. Also, these streams lead to many tiny water falls here and there. Also, they carry totally pristine and transparent water. Some people say that this water is even good for drinking. Very convenient and safe too. We spotted a few deers and monkeys though. The monkeys didn't get bothered from our presence, while the deers ran away afraid on seeing us. The trail from Shiratani to the Rock is a bit busy. It is quite lonely but very natural and serene from the rock till Kusugawa junction. This part is where we encountered the deers and monkeys. From Kusugawa junction till the Arakawa trail entrance, there is a old rail/trolly track. There also comes the ruins of an old settlement in this region. So, all three parts of the trek give different vibes. You also come across multiple mountain huts if you want to rest. These huts can mainly be seen from Shiratani till the rock though. Overall, it was great and beautiful day!

Beautiful magical nature. We even got to see few Yakuzaru (Yakushima macaque). The hike is short but you should bring shoes that are waterproof.

All green and easy to walk. Top of the trail where there is a big boulder with lookout towards the opposite mountains is said to be the highlight of the trail. I disagree. The detrail deep knot the green woods is the real gem.

We did the short hike and it took us just under 2 hours because we stopped a lot to take pictures. It was a nice and sunny day, so I don't know how slippery it gets when it's raining.

Despite beautiful place, It's a hard trecking into the jungle. You hike the most of the time going up. Bathroom is available at the entrance of the treck and another 5 km ahead. There is no beverage machine. At the first bridge you need to choose between two trails, the one crossing the bridge you have more chance to see monkeys.

Magical. We arrived at 5:30pm just before sunset and were the only ones there. The road of the waterfall and the sheer size of it were a sight to behold. Utterly magnificent.

Difficult to take photos here in the afternoon due to the high contrast between the high part and lower part of the water fall. It's the largest water fall in Yakushiam, and we can walk very close to it to take photos.

There are 4 hikes available of varying difficulty, which all start and end together (so if you do the longest hike, you'll have seen everything in the shortest hike, too). •30-minute course is easiest. Some people were even wearing street shoes. This walk is doable for those who can climb stairs. •50-minute course is a bit of a step up, but still not terrible. Could be good for beginner hikers. Would recommend proper sneakers at the very least, hiking boots even better. •80-minute course is where it steps up. There is lots of rock or roots walking, and at least 1 time I had to crouch very low under a tree. As far as physical difficulty, I didn't get very winded the entire time, the big challenge here is your footing. Not recommended for those who have never hiked before if you're alone, but would be okay for casual hikers. •The last, longest course takes around 4 hours. I didn't do this one, so please see the other reviews. 🪙You get a discount if you show them your Yakushima Island bus pass, or the admission ticket from Shiratani Unsuikyo. 🚻The visitor's center has outhouses and inside toilets, a small gift shop, and a large rest area with English displays on the 2nd floor.

Beautiful trail with different course lengths to accommodate any level of hiker. There are even points to get on some longer mountaineering trails.

Awesome hike in Yakusugi Land! Tip: go to Shiratani first and get the 200 yen discount coupon. Our entrance was only 300 JPY per person after the discount. In the beginning (30,50 min routes) there are very easy walkways and we opted for the 150 min route. It wasn't too challenging for a moderate day hikers. I would say it's beginner/medium level. It has been hit by some landslides so there are some areas that require a little climbing but nothing that will require you to turn back. The views are amazing, lots of old trees including a 2600 year old tree. The moss growing on the trees are wonderful and very different from Shiratani. We went on a cloudy/sunny day with minimal rain so that made the hike dryer and easier I think. Don't miss! Also, kigensugi is a 20 min drive further down Yakusugi land. It's a 3000 year old huge tree that you must not miss either! The only toilet in Yakusugi land is outside the entrance which closes with the shop at 16:20. There are extremely clean portable toilets if the shop is closed right there as well. Inside the trail there is a toilet "booth" (see picture) with a seat only, you got to bring you own carry-on toilet (buy at tokyu hands or sports shop).

Very enjoyable even when it's raining (given that you have waterproof gear). We actually found that the forest is more enjoyable and enchanted during the rain. The trails were really easy to walk.

Awesome trails, easy to get by car, I like the variety of difficulty in 5 suggested routes (from 30 to 210 min). For anything upwards of 80 min I strongly recommend hiking boots/gear — the terrain gets rough and tricky with lots of roots and stones (30- and 50 min routes are paved with wooden or stone walkways). Also when checking the weather in the city, subtract 5 degrees — weather app recalculates weather when getting on top, I dressed for a 13-15°C and arrived for a 8-9°C brisk walk. And they have a stamp on the 1st floor of the rest house for all stamp enthusiasts out there (: Also: Kudos to trail keepers for leaving bands exactly at points of me questioning “am I walking the trail or is that just a massive root system?”

An amazing place to hike. The longest path was about 3 miles. The first mile is very easy path, then it gets to more ladders and river/creek crossings. The name of this place made it seem cheap, like some amusement park. Don’t be fooled: this place is lovely with a very well done hiking trail through some major, old cedars. Plan for a very wet hike. Lots of rain fall. You need a legit hiking boot 🥾 for these trails but any person in reasonable shape could make the hike.

Beautiful 8-10hr trail to and from Jomon Sugi. Whilst impressive, the tree shouldnt be the main attraction. Make sure you enjoy the walk and soak in the surreal forest energy. Almost mystical.

A hike that many may consider to be the most popular on the island. Definitely can be done within 6-8 hours, and without a tour guide. Highly advise starting around 5-6:00 in the morning just to be safe. Tickets for the bus ride to the starting point can be bought at the bottom parking lot. Most of the hike is straightforward, while the last mile and a bit gets a bit steeper and tougher. Bring some snacks and beverages for hydration as there are rest stops a long the way and places to go sit down and eat at the top (please remember to take your trash home!!). Very cool, enormous stump of what must of been a massive tree. The only problem is there is a set number of busses to the trail so all the tourists hiking arrive at about the same time. So prepare to walk as fast as possible to blow past everyone else if you want to arrive to take pictures without anyone else around.

Very serene beach. Good to relax and walk along the beach in the morning. Not very busy as well. There are a few cafes nearby too, if needed. We were just 2 people, walking alone in the beach, sitting on the rocks, and relaxing on the sand. There were few people fishing a bit away. Lovely view from the rock. Very small open space and no railing. Signs and trail for the rock are not very clear /only in japanese, had to follow the pink tape. I started my hike from shiratani enterance (500yen fee to get in), took approx 2hr to gets here in the heavy rain. Other wise the rest of the trail is labeled clearly at each intersetion and at intersections only. Beautiful route, my cellphone pictures doesnt do it justice. Fair bit of elevation so beginners beware. Saw lots of solo hikers on the way. I totally recommend this place!

There is this small route that is to the right of the entrance of the nature walk that brings you to the lighthouse, to be honest, it was quite a drive for us even though we were driving a Suzuki hustler that is small enough to maneuvere, the road is very narrow and there are drainage and gaps on both sides which makes the ride all the more thrilling in the sense, I wouldn’t recommend people to drive there at night unless you are very confident with driving in the dark, we also met monkeys in the middle of the drive too, so drive slow. The lighthouse is not opened to public so we only managed to see it from afar, nevertheless the surroundings of the ocean and nature was still amazing. It's a really good place to learn about Yakusugi & Yakushima's history. There are a lot of old loggers' tools, and amazing cedar art. Pamphlets are available in English for the ones who doesn't speak Japanese. However, it doesn't explain everything that is written in English but the main ideas. The 7000 years branch is amazing to look, the highlight of the museum! Also, there are some walking paths and places to eat in nature all around.
