Invited by a friend, we visited this little gem just off A127 between Brentwood and Grays Thurrock. I didn't even know it existed. Barnards Farm is run by Christabella Trust and owners Barnard and Sylvia Holmes. Twenty-two hectares of magnificent undulating landscape of ponds, streams, and dotted with over 80 sculptures by owner and philanthropist Bernard Holmes, and artists Anthony Gormley, David Wilkinson, Rob Waters, Elizabeth Frink, and many others. This time of year the wildlife was absolutely buzzing with butterflies, bees, dragonflies, damselflies, woodpeckers and several Grey Herons. We took a picnic, but you can go visit their cafe beautifully situated in a stunning wooden barn. Put some good walking shoes on and be prepared to be wowed! Or you can take a journey on the miniature railway (which we didn't get a chance to do), or a buggy tour. The landscape meanders from tree avenues, high vantage points over the countryside, to well maintained open ponds and streams with bridges and stunning vistas from all areas. There are over 80 sculptures hidden around the estate - some are enormous! There's a national collection of Malus trees which was in full fruit, oriental and herbaceous gardens, homegrown vegetable plot and tranquil flower garden. This will appeal to families, kids, students, plant specialists, artists and those that just need some peace and calm. A great place to safely explore, experience, relax and admire its beauty. It really challenges your senses, both looking, touching and smelling. Barnard's Farm has ample parking, disabled access and toilets. We didn't try the food as we brought a picnic, but the lollies were delicious! The knowledge from the volunteers was remarkable and everyone was very pleasant. I felt honoured to have experienced such a beautiful place, for which most of the year it is a private establishment. Will definitely go back next year, as one day was not enough! Highly recommend! Something for everyone. Price £7.50 adult and children free. Last chance to enjoy this secret garden is 29th August. All funds raised go to charity. Photos are my own. Thanks.
