Beautiful cathedral that is the absolute highlight of visiting Sofia. Mesmerising and magnificent on the inside and outside. It closes at 7 pm but they don't let anyone in a bit before that so if you are visiting it I would recommend the morning!! The walk from city centre is only 20 minutes and is absolutely worth doing it as there are beautiful buildings and parks to see on the way there!!

Beautiful old Cathedral with intricate carvings and breathtaking details. Huge chandeliers suspend over the place and the alcoves hold a great deal of minute details that you could study for a long time. The only drawback is that you have to pay to take pictures inside and there are staff members policing this constantly which really takes away from the atmosphere inside.

Beware that you cannot take pictures inside - you have two options: to pay 10 lev to take pictures or to confront a man taking care of the cathedral inside and having a great eye for those who try to sneak a photo :)

Very beautiful cathedral. One of the most remarkable from the exterior. A genuine marvel. Inside it is dark, I found a priest smoking, he yelled at me about taking a picture. I thought how ironic, if something is to desecrate a house of worship, certainly smoking would be worse than a picture. Inside, it's a bit more open, dark, and depressing. Worth a visit if you're close! Walls are probably stained with smoke.

One of the most beautiful cathedral I've ever visited. Being a Muslim I was spell bound. Pictures and videos are strictly not allowed, though just a part of church is open for visitors. We offered the 10 Lev to take pictures but still the person in charge didn't allow us. When we went last weekend some construction work was going on outside the church. The architecture of this church is just beyond beautiful. The exterior patina against the limestone is gorgeous when lit by the setting sun and the evening lights. The interior is filled with murals on the walls and ceilings along with all the usual decor of a catholic church. It is absolutely beautiful inside and out but if you want to take photos on the inside you must make a donation and you cannot use a flash.

A really really beautiful thing to see, I saw it in the daytime but couldn’t get enough so went back and watched the sunset! Unfortunately there was a lot construction when I went, but if in Sofia, I would definitely go again.

I spent about an hour in it to take in the magnificence of the architecture and the peaceful environment. Moreover, the cathedral is located conveniently in the city center. So you can visit other attractions after this just by walking a bit. There are many delicious F&B outlets available should you crave some food after visiting here. There is also a street market nearby which sells different souvenirs, some of which are vintage, at reasonable prices.

It can get very busy. Walked up and down it once and that was enough for me. The view of Vitosha mountain in the background is something to see but the boulevard for me felt too touristy and commercial. I recommend exploring the side streets off the boulevard to discover hidden gems.

Officially known as the Church of St Nicholas the Miracle-Maker. It's beautiful on the outside as well as the inside. It's worth a visit. It isn't far from the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Look for the gold-colored domes in the distance.

It is a place with unique spirit and an enourmous significance for the Bulgarian heritage. I come back from time to time to enjoy the energy :) It is recommended to make a reservation in advance to enter the church with a guide. You can freely access the garden. The reason I assign 3 stars is the attitude of the woman at the ticket office - she was arrogant and rude proclaimig there is no order and how we cannot take part in the guided tour in a very impolite manner. It was an embarrassing situation in front of a friend from abroad. I would recommend a more polite attitude to the visitors.

The church is beautiful inside - it’s impressive that there are 800-1000 year old frescoes still well preserved. The small garden is also picturesque with lovely shade and several benches. We visited as part of Rila monastery tour so did not have to worry about timing or booking as this was handled on our behalf, but given its small size there are limits on the number of people inside Facility wise there are toilets inside the garden enclosure.

Very lovely garden with sequoias. The church has great murals of 11,13 centuries. I saw a bit similar murals in Cappadocia, so I wasn't extremely impressed. However it worth visiting. Not far from Sofia. The surroundings are very nice and there is a spectacular view of Sofia. The overall time for being inside is 10 minutes, 8 people are allowed for one time. So you should have spare time. We waited for 40 min in the garden to enter the church.

This church was built and expand in 3 separate periods (10th century, 13th century, in 19th century) separated by 100 years. It has one of the most amazing fresco paintings that depicts detail facial expressions of people. The last supper was painted in this church. You do have to get a ticket to enter. And there's only a small number of people that are allowed inside at any given time. So go there early or else you will be spending a lot of time waiting. It's too bad that they do not allow photos inside.

It’s alright… just alright. Quick reminder. It’s free to view the church from the outside and take pictures of it as well as view the garden. It costs 10BGN for an adult to enter a 2BGN for students to enter the church inside with a guide which I think is every 10-15 minutes. Overall a nice experience worth visiting

I visited this church already many times and it's extremely beautiful. BUT .... this time I took an American friend and we didn't get in! As stated on the website, we were there at opening time at 9am. Just to see a sign that it doesn't open until 9:30am. So we waited, until a tourist bus arrived a little before 9:30. The tourist guide told us they made a reservation, so we had to wait. We went to the ticket office anyway, to hear the same thing... the group was first and we had to wait for at least another hour. She also mentioned that this group makes a reservation at that time every day! No mention if there would be another group with a reservation after that hour. So who knows how long we would have to wait? We didn't risk waiting. At the website it doesn't mention the necessity of making a reservation. Apparently, if you keep clicking, you will end up at the National Museum website where it does mention you have to make a reservation. Where is the care for tourists that don't speak Bulgarian or just the care for people who want to visit this beautiful church? So ... opening time isn't 9am, it's 10:30 at the earliest, and only if nobody else made a reservation at that time.

Very cool place to visit! The frescoes here are so well preserved and they tell lots of stories. Definitely worth the visit if you are in downtown Sofia. It is a UNESCO World heritage site, and now I know why! You only get about 10 minutes inside though.

I spent about an hour in this church and was amazed by how well preserved it was. It is amazing how the 3 layers of buildings across built across centuries smoothly intertwined into a single one. The fresco paintings are from different periods, from the 11th to the 19th centuries. The garden around the church is also very lovely and peaceful. Due to its small size, the church only allows a small group of people in for a very limited amount of time. I was not allowed to take pictures of the beautiful and well preserved frescos due to its UNESCO heritage status. I would have preferred to take a longer time to appreciate them. However, I still enjoyed my visit and I recommend it to anyone who wants to see a place with an enormous significance for the Bulgarian heritage.

Ticketing office at 50meters after the entrance Of the path after the wooden doors. There is a closure form 2-2.30pm. Bought the ticket at the national history museum as a dual ticket for 15le( this component is 5lev). On arrival, took about 10mins to enter as queue was not long and only allows 8 persons for 10mins. The small church is surrounded by a beautiful and serene gardens. The interior is stunning with it being three separate constructions built over time with an extension to the church then a further to protect it from the elements. Loads of frescos which is from 11century and then painted over later for Saint Nicholas. Eye rubbed out of painting as sight of good luck from the saints. 10mins is adequate. It’s a Miniature Rila church.

Came here via a local tour enroute to Rila Monastery. Must buy entrance ticket before entering the premise. Quite small place and has a very old cemetery that protect the church.

English review ( Italian review just below) When I decided to visit this ancient church, I was longing to enter e place of mystery, delight and spiritual bliss. My expectations have been satisfied: the church displays its wonderful artistic value, plus I got really amazed by its atmosphere. We ( me and my loved partner Valentina) took some buses to reach the outskirts of Sofia ( the total length of the travel took 45 minutes or little more) : we had to change some buses because Boyana church is located at Boyana district, over a hill, at an higher level. You have to pay attention to the timetable because the bus taking to the church is not so frequent. So , if you take the bus from Sofia, check the connections before starting your trip. It's feasible during a morning or afternoon but don't go without planning your trip in advance. The bus leaves you " at the feet" of the church, meaning that you have to walk for about ten minutes to get to the church itself. The path to the church follows quite a steep road ( if you start from the bus stop) so take with you a backpack just with the necessary, without too much weight. The price of the ticket is quite cheap ( if I remember well it's about 5/7 Euros per ticket; obviously you have to pay in the local currency, the Bulgarian Lev. They accept credit cards). When you enter the beautiful garden, a little park surrounding the church, you notice flowers and trees , green areas that are constantly cleaned and arranged. Everything evokes peace and spiritual delight. I visited the church in October 2023 so there wasn't any queue and you could really enjoy the place: it's a gem. Boyana church is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list so the place has been considered of essential cultural value. When you visit the place, you have to consider this: you are experiencing a sort of magic, because you are visiting three places at once. The church contains three different buildings: one dating back to 10th century, another one belonging to 13th century and the last one built in the 19th century. There are frescoes painted in 1259 ; you can witness some artistic " jewels" of medieval art. When we entered this little church- a monk guided us inside- I felt a very particular " aura", I cannot explain the details. I can tell you that my breath was literally taken away for a while...my eyes got shocked by the beautiful walls, I felt like being thrown in another dimension. The smell, the colours, the tiny space "embracing " my senses made me experience something unique. There are toilets. If you visit the place in summer, there are some trekking routes just near the church: you be totally immersed in the nature. If you have to return to to Sofia city centre, the bus stop is where you arrived before, where you get out the first bus at your arrival. Don't remember to look around you in the little park of the church , you will find some ancient graves and , above all, a very important tombstone: Queen Eleonor Reuss- Köstritz was buried there. One of the best cultural Churches in sofia, Has details about a lot of the history, and also has a crypt. In the crypt it's dark and has tvs to explain and tell about the history of Sofia. It's a very very nice place to visit especially for tourists.

This historic church dating to the 6th century is interesting to see, though it only takes about 5 minutes as it is quite small. There were about a dozen seats inside which helped in seeing the paintings on the ceiling and upper walls, and signs with some history in the outer part. The two negatives are no photos allowed inside (fair I guess), but also that about 1/3-1/2 of the floor space in the alcoves is taken up by a shop (super odd feeling).

It’s beautifully situated inside the walls of government buildings I believe? There is even a restaurant close to the rotunda if you’re looking for a bite to eat while looking at the church. This historical site of the former Eastern Roman Empire fascinates me. Sophisticated architecture combined with intelligent smoke and steam ducts for the sauna and heating. And all this in the centre of the great city of Sofia. And there is much more to see. I really like Sofia.

The Rotunda Church is a great summary of Bulgaria's history, from the Roman times to the Communist era and now our modern days. It was built initially as a Roman bath, then converted into a church. During the rules of the Ottomans, it was a mosque and then it became a church again when Bulgaria gained independence. Then during the Communist days, the government buildings were built around it so that this religious building will not be in public eyes, which I believe helped it survive till today. It is free and uniquely positioned. Come in and walk to get a beautiful look at the church

Originally built as a Roman Bath in the 4th century, this red brick building was converted into a church, became a mosque during the rule of the Ottomans and was reconsecrated as an Orthodox Church when Bulgaria regained its independence. There are beautiful frescoes inside. They had been painted over by the Ottomans and rediscovered and restored in the 20th century. Behind and around the building, there are remains of the old Roman city. Walk around to get a sense of the history of the place and for beautiful perspectives of the church.

Amazing hike, if you're a beginner it might be slightly difficult for you but worth it !!! Took me 1h50 from Golden Bridge to the top of the mountain.

The summit it self is not very spectacular, quite flat. There is a challet there where you can buy a tea or a coffee. This mountain is better for mountai biking than for treking. The shortest route starts from the refuge Aleko where is a ski lift and a parking place.

We traveled by private car to Simeonovo to take a cable lift there. Unfortunately and please bear in mind that it is opertaing only on weekends during summer time. The lady at the entrance told us that there is other way by car from Aleko hut. The road is ok also for normal cars. Once you reach the place you will exprience a spectacular view and I recommend to take red track to go up.

Amazing nature scenery,with many hiking paths and different water streams. You can approach by car up to a point,then it's all on food. At the beginning of the paths there are a few places to have a coffee or a bite to eat.

Amazing reprieve from the city. So close yet so far.

The Vitosha mountain is the greatest advantage of Sofia over other cities and European capitals. So close, accessible by city transport, it offers an escape from the noise and the smog of the urban area. And it offers paths for everyone - you can climb, run, walk, there are ski and bike tracks. The cable car owning company, however, should free the mountain from their presence as the lifts do not operate.

The crypt below the church is very interesting, especially the mosaic floors. It seemed a bit dusty, and we couldn't go out using the normal exit; we had to go back all the way to the entrance (we had been advised of it when we entered though). The visit was free.

The tomb of Honorius is closed for renovations, but we toured the rest of the archaeological complex under the church. Watch the introductory video as that will do you how the building changed over the centuries. Some decent early Christian mosaics and frescoes.

A church with a long history although the interior isn't as ornate as others nearby. Good to stroll around. Taking photos would require a fee this should be reviewed as this would help bring in more visitors. Perhaps ask for a donation instead.

So much history here. Everyone will go to St Alexander Nevsky but the history here surpasses it. On the site of the Roman necropolis of Serdica the church was originally built in the 6th century. It’s free to go in but I highly recommend paying the 6 Lev to go down into the crypt where the remains of the necropolis are. It’s far bigger than you expect. There’s also some stunning Roman mosaics.

Visiting St Sofia was underwhelming at first but it got much better when visiting the crypt. The access is not made for people having difficulties walking as there is a lot of stairs and the roof might be low on some areas. The video teaching us on the evolution of the church construction was quite interesting to put in perspective what you can see. I wished they had put that video closer to the entrance rather than quasi at the end of the path. Also there was no space for people to sit and watch the video so, really, it better be placed somewhere else. There are nice mosaics towards the end of the walk, after passing many tombs with flat and arched tops giving an indication of when they were built (together with find artefacts not displayed anymore). While in some churches in other countries the bones are visible, there everything is removed... Which rather remove curiosity and amazement from the tourist. Everything is apparently put in a museum... While it would have been so much nicer to keep findings in their original context. The place could also benefit from me pictures and descriptions of how it was looking at the time of the discovery, the intention for digging, the challenges encountered, etc. Build a story while walking through the history of the crypt.

Not sure what style it is but the special bricks make it different then most churches. Be careful with taking pictures, I got chased out by an unfriendly lady when I made one, having no clue what was going on :-). Later on I saw the signs which required a hefty fee for (tourists) taking pictures. I like the idea from another review to ask for a small donation instead. I would rather contribute in that way then being charged for a picture. Anyway, nice experience and next to more special churces and historical buildings

I visited the crypts on Wednesday 4 January 2023 and the entrance was free. The crypts were much larger than I expected and full of tombs and graves which was what I wanted to see. There is also a quite good mosaic, which I think is why other people visit and worth a look. The church above is less ornate than others but it's high open red brick ceiling is quite nice There are lots of stairs and currently you need to go back through the same path to exit, so if you have mobility issues it might be difficult. I took photos, but for whatever reason I think videos are forbidden.

An unusual and interesting visit. Enjoyable to discover the complex history of this church and its place in the history of Sofia. Underneath you can visit the museum/site of excavated walls, tombs, mosaics. I didn’t follow how the written descriptions linked to what one was seeing. A clearer link from the explanation would be good.

The church has been mostly rebuilt in modern times, but the necropolis from Roman times are fascinating. The lady on the desk Elisabetta was very helpful at explaining the site and there is a short video which explains the site. You can see the mosaics of the very first church which was tiny...

The synagogue is the largest in Southeastern Europe, one of two functioning in Bulgaria, and the third-largest in Europe. The architecture is striking, and the interior is equally impressive with its ornate details and peaceful ambiance.

As other reviews have suggested, a very racist staff. Rang the bell to enter and was told over the intercom that my backpack was oversized (it’s a normal sized backpack). I guess the entrance has video surveillance. Yet, a few other visitors left with bigger backpacks. Two men entered after me, one of whom had a bigger backpack. They were White; I am not. The guy who I spoke to over the intercom randomly came out 5 min later. I asked why I was refused entry when others with larger packs were granted entry. He said I was dwindling for 20 min (I was probably there for 5 min). Also accused me of taking his photo. Some random guy from across the street came over and took my phone, and presumably told him in Bulgarian that I did not take his photo. No apology. The worker then went on to tell me that he has the right to refuse entry to whomever he wants. Disappointed that some of the negative reviews about this place were correct. I guess the notice by the entrance stating that you can be denied entrance ‘without the need for explanation’ allows them to justify such acts of prejudice. Ive had nothing but positive experiences here in Sofia so far so this was truly disappointing.

‼️ BRIEFLY ⭐⭐ One of the few places we had to pay to visit being also a religious place (5€pp). To be honest it is empty inside and I wouldn't recommend it. ❗I haven't liked it much particularly because it looks like they have a lot freedom of letting you in or not based on personal preferences. ❗KEEP IN MIND: you have a security checkpoint at the entrance so leave bags at home. Always bring with you IDs and passports as they will ask you for it.

It's a very nice synagogue. The opening hours are completely random though and they can decide not let you in even during opening hours . The price is 5lev. You need to ring the bell to enter and they'll check your backpack/purse

The interior of Sofia Synagogue was indeed beautiful, but my overall experience was disappointing. I was surprised to find an entrance fee at a place of worship, something I've never encountered before. The staff's unfriendly attitude made me feel unwelcome, and the strict security checks made me feel like a criminal rather than a curious visitor eager to explore the building. Given these negative aspects, I wouldn't consider revisiting the synagogue in the future.

Prepare yourself. It starts with a bad cop treating you as a terrorist, then a "good cop" then a scary man jumping out of the office asking for a 5 lv entrance fee. There was less security in the airport at the entrance to Bulgaria and none around the president's office.

The statue of the Sofia is one of the symbols of the city. It is located in the center of Sofia and near it are the ministerial council, the president's, Balkan hotel, the church Sveta Nedelya and other important administrative buildings. Right next to it there is a metro stop which is easy to reach almost every point of Sofia. Nearby is also the iconic Vitosha Street, suitable for walking and relaxation, as well as a drink or a meal in the numerous bars and restaurants. Overall I recommend visiting

Beautifully erected in the year 2000, this statue is amazing and even has a light shined on it for better display in the late evening early morning hours.

An iconic monument of the revered saint Sofia. Just few meters away from the main administration buildings and above the metro. Easy to reach and also has lot of eating joints close by along with beautiful old orthodox churches.

It’s been a while since I last saw the monument. From memory, last time was in 2014. If I recall correctly, the monument symbolises justice for all. I may be wrong. Anyway, worth a visit, then wander through the centre to people watch! Worth a visit.

We were highly impressed with our visit to the National Archaeological Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The museum houses an extensive and well-curated collection of artifacts spanning millennia of Bulgarian history. It was truly captivating to explore the diverse exhibits and gain a deeper understanding of the country's rich cultural heritage. We would recommend setting aside at least 1.5 hours to fully appreciate the museum's offerings. There's so much to see and learn, and you won't want to rush through the exhibits.

Not to be missed! Another fabulous museum in the capital. I was here for hours exploring all the treasures. The actual treasury should not be missed. Accessed through a door on the balcony floor. Full of gold, jewelry and other precious artefacts. Like most galleries and museums there is no cafe. Take water with you.

Excellent museum with art of interesting exhibitions. The information is limited but available in English. Don't forget to look up at the ceiling - the whitewash is peeling in some places, and you can see the origin decorations underneath (apparently the building was originally a mosque). So the archaeological museum is an artifact in itself. Cost 10 lev.

If you enjoy learning about history and archaeological artifacts, this is the place to spend your time. Make sure you visit the Treasure Hall where there’s several gold pieces ranging from jewelry to helmets. There’s an attendant who will gladly explain the function of the items. Photos with your phone is permitted. Note the museum is closed on Mondays.

A very helpful museum for understanding particularly the Roman & Byzantine era. The room with the recent artifacts covering paleolithic, neolithic, copper & early bronze age was really illuminating. It's a smallish museum & some exhibits are not well signed in English so keep that in mind. The video screens for engaging kids look great! but only in Bulgarian right now. Would choose this over National History museum because about half the content overlaps & Nat History museum is far away, even though that museum is more complete. But the archeological museum you can do in one day with many other astounding sites right nearby.

I enjoyed this Museum. I think it's good for an hour or two unless you're a huge archeology fan. I thought it was reasonably well organized and most labels in English are provided at most exhibits but not all. Mostly BC and AD Greek and Roman Stone work on the ground floor. Go up a level and there's fresco's and icons from any old Bulgarian churches in the rooms. Currently have a temporary exhibit on ancient artifacts that were fairly recently found nearby. They date back to 4th or 5th, 5th millennium BC and there's lots of nice jewelry. Even pieces of ancient. Amber.

I guess it's one way to waste an afternoon. Mostly old pottery, tools and coins. The Gold Mask everyone is talking about is in London right now (March 2024). 12 Lev is the entrance, which is pushing it, IMHO. Someone mentioned there's commentary art - that is definitely not true. It's all very very old.

Very pleasant people, and helpful. They know English. Museum was very good and you can see lots of things.ticket prices for 2 parents and 1 children up to 16 years old are 16 lev or 8 euros.

I have been there before. This time was a special occasion for opening of the exhibition 105 years since the discovery of the graves and golden masks in Trebenishta, Ohrid, Macedonia. I highly recommend seeing the exhibition.

The former mosque is now used as a museum. All of the artworks are wonderful, and you can experience the enrich and splendor of history. Students had a discounted rate. Please go and enjoy.

We just love this museum! And also there are few interactive things for the kids as well.

This museum has many treasures. The items are obviously amazing, but I do wish that the museum were more organized especially in the ground floor. It wasn’t categorized in any sort of order or theme that I could make sense of. And I’m between the ancient items, it’s interspersed with contemporary art. While I absolutely support and love contemporary art, but it was out of place and seemly not related to the exhibition. The jewelry room upstairs however was a bit more organized and new. It was also the cooler room with AC. The rest of the museum was extremely hot. If you are in town, it’s still worth a quick visit. You can see everything in an hour.

Nice Orthodox church with beautiful frescoes. The frescoes are pretty new, but very well aligned with the church architecture. This is my favourite church in Sofia - not too big, not too small… and has a sould and a story to tell. We also had a chance to see a local wedding here on Friday evening - amazing experience.

Beautiful inside and out. Definitely, worth a visit when you’re in Sofia. Without understanding the history behind, you would say that it’s very artistic and great Cathedral in Sofia but there’s a dark history behind. According to wiki, it was the site of a terrorist Attack in 1925. It’s then being renovated to leave no traces of the Attack. Other than that, it’s definitely worth a visit. It’s incredible more on the inside, which in Bulgaria - they believe that for respect, it’s better not to take photos inside the cathedral. So I only managed to have outside which already magnificent. Along this cathedral, you’ll see more tourist sites within the area as it’s considered central area.

Beautiful church in the heart of Sofia. Near other churches, Vitoshy street, the shopping areas. It's worth stopping in, entry is free but beware that taking photos costs money. We saw workers snuffing out votive/ prayer candles before they went out on their own.

A stunning Orthodox Church in the center of Sofia. So beautiful. Amazing architecture, decor, frescos. So peaceful inside. So happy I was able to visit. Really enjoyed the visit. A must see when in Sofia.

A beautiful Eastern Orthodox cathedral built in neo-Byzantine style. If you wish to take photos inside, there's a charge. At the time of my visit, there was a family’s baptism of a child. A special event to witness. There were no waits and no reservations required. The view at night is beautiful.

St Nedalaya church is an Orthodox Church in the center of Sofia dating back to 10th century. It was reconstructed many times before becoming the current Eastern Orthodox Church. Until 19th century, Church has retained its wooden structure in contrast to the most of the churches which were converted to brick and mortar around 14th century. The reason was unknown. The interiors of the church are simply mesmerising! Gilted altars follow the iconostasis pattern of hierarchy with Christ the pantocrator to the right and Virgin Mary seated with baby Jesus to the left. There are capturing Frescoes through out, for one on the one on left side wall depicts a detailed Nativity. Another remarkable feature is the central gilted chandelier with gorgeous miniature icons and floral embellishments. If you are in Sofia, I strongly advice to visit this church for at least few minutes. Note, although the entry is free, you need to buy a ticket (5 lev) if you are taking pictures (worth spending 5 lev!)

Beautiful church with a great chandelier in the middle. The church charges 5 BGN to take photos inside however and it is cash only but there was no control to stop this. Would recommend a visit.

Saint Nedjelja Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, the cathedral of the Sofia Diocese of the Bulgarian Patriarchate and their tomb. The Church of Saint Nedjelja dates back to the 10th century, and was the city's cathedral from the 18th century. It was damaged several times during violent wars, but as a symbol of the Bulgarian church, it was regularly restored.

a beautiful cathedral that's full of art on the walls. all the details are breathtaking and well-preserved. the churches and cathedrals in bulgaria are an absolute feast.

A church that has a long and interesting history. I recommend you to look into it if you are keen on history. There was the biggest (at that time) bomb attack collapsing the domes at this church in 1925 and 200 people died and 500 were injured. It was then renovated again and inaugurated in 1933.

Beautiful church worth taking a look at when you are in Sofia. I believed I managed to witness a baptism of a baby when I was there and it was so heartwarming . The smile on the family faces says it all. The interior of the church is decorated with beautiful fresco paintings, which was awe-inspiring when I was sitting inside the church and witnessing the baptism ceremony.

A gorgeous church that you must visit! I happened to be there in a Saturday and witnessed a baptism of a baby. It was adorable. The entire church inside was covered with gorgeous fresco paintings. It is indeed awe-inspiring. You must pay in order to take photos - a small fee that is worthwhile. The church is small but pay careful attention to the artwork as it is very moving.

The Amphitheater which was built in 3rd and 4th century was discovered during the construction of a city hotel in 2005. It was laid on top a 2nd century Roman theatre. The current ruins are housed under the Hotel but are accessible to public free of charge (Tuesday to Sunday). It’s not of a must see but if you are staying in around Sofia and have of extra hours to kill, probably you can get here

The amphitheater is located in the hotel. You can see through the glass. The hotel is closed so don't bother.

Well, yes, it's impressive to see when you imagine how it was. But these are ruins rising out of ground of a hotel. You get in, take pics for one minute and it's done. It looks more like an interesting element within the hotel' design. If you are nearby or stay there, take a look. Otherwise, don't spend your time on searching for this.

I like the idea that this structure is preserved within the hotel and after preservation, the hotel included these ruins within the design of their building. It's free to enter but the ruins themselves are not that spectacular. It does look like a fun place to have drinks.

Outside the hotel you will see a few remnants from the amphitheater. Inside, walk down the circular staircase, and you will see the ruins. There's not a lot to see but, you'll have to use your imagination. It would be nice if there were some informative signs about the site. We were not permitted into the actual amphitheater area but the hotel obviously uses the space for gatherings. It would be fun to attend a function there.

One big misunderstanding on the service side. I have never seen such rudeness and rudeness. You come and wave an unpleasant gesture like "go away dude"

We had a great time there. It was very interesting. Exhibit details were offered in both Bulgarian and English. We went on Sunday and it wasn't very crowded. We got the family ticket for 10 lv. The museum also organizes birthday parties for kids. While we were there, there was such a party. We were very impressed by the guide that was taking care of the children. She was very kind and managed to hold their interest. It looked like they were having a lot of fun. I will totally take advantage of this when my kid is older.

Very interesting museum with extensive items. It’s mostly in a linear timeline so telling of Bulgaria’s history from Bronze Age onwards, using a variety of objects and signs in both English and Bulgarian. The location feels a little odd as in the former dictator’s residence, but it’s a good starting point if wanting to learn more about the country’s history in (at least) 1.5-2 hours. For facilities there are adequate toilets on the ground floor, a coat check, and a small cafe that is mostly drinks and snacks. I removed one star as they were setting up for an event so we missed the entire Middle Ages period as it was just blocked off.

The ticket fare for entrance is 10 leva per person. There are some interesting items from the Romans, and especially gold ones are very nice. Third floor is for some old local clothes and war items. I think direction signs are kind of insufficient.

The building itself is grand and prestigious. The collection is large but the way of presentation could be more interactive as its a bit presented in a static way. It would be nice if there would be some information about the history of the building. I also noticed that for many objects they show replica's instead of the originals. The staff was polite but did not really know things about the collection. Parking is free and there is plenty of space.

This is an excellent museum with all periods of Bulgarian history and culture. I was fortunate that so much of the commentary is in English. I was impressed by the Greek and Roman exhibits and much of the Bulgarian history through the ages, the beautiful costumes and dress and the interesting link with the Saxe Coburgs and the British Royal family, especially Prinxe Albert and Victoria. The architecture is very interesting and so many relics available to see. I highly recommend it.

This was my first visit to the museum. Somehow I expected more but still I was fascinated from all the exhibits. You can feel the history at this place. In my opinion, there too many stones and columns from Roman times. Unfortunately, some of the most important exhibits are copies. The interior needs to be refurbished and put into the modern age - otherwise communism can be felt from every corner. 😁 Toilets are clean but old. There's a small café on the 2nd floor, hall 3. Prices there are fair but cash only. Regular entry fee for the museum is 12 BGN, paid with a Revolut card. In general, the museum with the adjacent park at the foothill of Vitosha mountain is a great place for groups and families. Highly recommend it.

If you are in the beautiful city of Sofia, Bulgaria, this is a must visit place. Here you will find the rich Bulgarian history, artefacts and much more. Staff inside speaks english which is a plus. Every item has English labels with details. You must have plenty of time to visit and check all the floors. Parking is plenty and it’s free. You can buy the tickets at the door and are relatively cheap.

Excellent story board of the history of Bulgaria. You need to get a taxi from the centre of Sofia and getting one back can be a tad more difficult.

I can barely say that it's OK. It's being renovated from the inside a bit, but left from the outside. You can see that the park is being neglected from a long time ago. The entrance is still in relative shape so you can easily mislead yourself. The inside can still represent all the glory the bulgarian history used to be. You can see some artifacts where you can't elswere. There is a large parking lot upfront so you can be sure that you'll have your car parked.

The National history museum🏛️ has exhibitions ranging from the ancient era to modern times, permanent exhibitions but also temporary ones. All exhibitions have descriptions of what they are in both the Bulgarian and English language. The ticket 🎟️ price for students is 3lv💵 and you even get a fancy ticket which you can keep, and not just a ordinary receipt 🧾. The scenery when standing in front of the museum is beautiful with a panoramic view to Vitosha mountain ⛰️. The museum is rather large with two very large halls and multiple smaller ones, there are also exhibitions in some of the corridors and stairways. At the entrance there are two souvenir shops🛍️ that accept card💳 payment. The museum also has a toilet.

One of the coolest places I have seen! First of all the building itself is architecturally stunning, makes you feel small but it is fascinating in design on how it incorporates elements.of traditional architecture. The there is the historical artefacts that make things interesting. Bulgaria has a very long history and you get that sense in the objects that you find. The explanations could be improved, but if you like history you will enjoy this place. Also the garden in the back is worth having a short walk in.

Must visit for anyone even remotely interested in Bulgarian history. Keep half a day or more as a minimum. Exhibits have English translations and you can also hire a English guide.

Good description of artifacts in English and Bulgarian. Bus 304 Nim last stop is in front or Bus 2 across the street. The skeleton on the wall have perfect strong teeths.

This museum was a lot more interesting than louver in Abu Dhabi. I was honestly very impressed with the collection from several periods within the museum. The staff around museum has trouble with English communication so be prepared to use translator. Also if like us you are traveling in December when Sofia isn't covered in snow be prepared to see some there so get your warm clothing, it's very close to the mountains :)

This is a very cool museum, the best in Bulgaria. Have very huge collection and interesting building, you will not be disappointed

Quite far out of the centre but has a beautiful backdrop and gave lots of really interesting context about Bulgaria over the years. Well worth the trip.

A must visit in Sofia. Take Bus 2 to the museum as it is uphill. A beautiful setting with amazing architecture. Not all exhibits have an English translation but you will still learn a lot about the history of Bulgaria. If you visit when there is good weather, do sit in the outdoor cafe and soak in the views.

It is a multi-purpose place, quite big and spacious. A beautiful park is around it, with lots of cafeterias, planty of green and enough peace, that you don't feel the traffic. The park with this building is right next to the central pedestrian street, 5-10 minutes walking from other central points of the city. Nice view from the balcony at the 7th floor. The only negative point that I noticed, is that the toilets could have been a bit more clear.

Great place for events. The organization is just a bit messy and all the workers seems quite confused and not very well informed about the conditions of their job.

One of my favourite buildings in Sofia. A soc which place is unique and is very popular for concerts with famous international and Bulgarian artists, ice skating spectacles, ballet, festivals (the book festival every December), cinema festivals, exhibitions, and many more activities and entertainments. Huge place, with many halls and the main hall is epic. It’s a bit old and needs restoration. The toilets are new at least.

this is a national palace of culture. and at the same time it is one of the most dirty places in Sofia. The place near the building is pretty cool with fountains and some kind of small park, it is nice. But the building itself seems quite abandoned. Shame on administration

I cannot judge the interior of the building because I did’n go inside, but from outside is one of the ugliest buildings I ever seen and is blocking the beautiful view of the mountains from the square

The National Palace of Culture is a very large building that was opened in 1981. It's a large meeting and congress center which is also used as a major venue for concerts. The building's architecture is not atypical of that era. It uses size to impress. Where the building fails, the landscaping of the area in front of it is memorable because it makes the best of its wide open space and of the water fountains that adorn it. This open space is also used for temporary popular exhibitions.

Despite the Palace, which is a great place, the surrounding area is beautiful for walking and having coffee ☕️. It's in the middle of the famous street of Vitosha Boulevard, so it's easy to reach it.

This is an impressive convention center located in central Sofia. There is a beautiful park with sitting areas nearby.

I visited this place couple of times, most recently for a concert. It is okay in general, but it has some things to be desired. One example would be the seating, it is quite cramped up, I know that they are supposed to get as many people as possible, but my experience with the seating was not great. Another example is the parking, I asked 3 of the guards for help about where to pay and the simply ignored me which was weird. The parking can’t be paid with a card which is weird given that you are right in the centre of the capital of Bulgaria. With that said, I would recommend going there for an event like a concert or comedy club gathering, but mind the above mentioned. Great: The garden in front is great and you will almost all the time see people there, it is nice for photos and a walk.

Beautiful park to just sit and enjoy a nice summer evening. The fountains are lovely and the place is always vivid. Can recommend either for a stroll through the park or just a resting picnic.

Sofia is so joyful and the people are so nice! Everyone said otherwise until I visited it myself. The building looks really impressive even though it gives a cold vibe. Beautiful

Nice green space with lots of cafes and seating areas close to Vitosha Boulevard. Busy at the weekends much quieter during the week. Next to the Hilton where I stayed so passed through it a lot. Has its own metro station.

A great place to learn more about the communist period, the video on socialist propaganda is interesting and informative, and there is plenty of art to see indoors and outdoors. The sculpture park is particularly atmospheric. For 6 leva it is a great way to spend an afternoon, and easy to access on the metro

Small place but full of history, life and afterthought. I recommend visiting just gives you a perspective of things. Entrance area is easy to miss as its a big gate and building but it's behind it so you need to enter door by gate.

Stunning conservation of sculptures. Crazy to find that amound of figures in just one garden however the maintenance of the place could be much better. The gallery was exhibiting a photography biennale and the stories were very impactful. Be mindful that the museum consists of the garden and one gallery, that’s it. There are no labels or historic info. The star which once was adorning the communist party headquarters in Sophia lays at the entrace of the garden, don’t miss it.

The entrance of the museum is on the parking of the Ministry of culture. Nice collection of sculptures from the communist era. The gallery with painting is almost needless. If you appreciate the art from soviet regime you should go! The nearest train station is GM Dimitrov, 5 minutes walk.

The museum consists of a single room with two dozen paintings. One of the paintings was worth seeing. Then there is the sculpture garden which one can view without a ticket. Not enough considering the effort to get there.

Atmospheric run down garden with a bunch of retired Communist era sculptures on plinths (with English labels if you're interested). The quality swings from excellent through to crass but it's all good stuff. The art gallery up the steps costs two lev to enter and has amazing socialist paintings again varying from terrific portraits of dead leaders through to awful worker scenes. Best museum in Sofia and definitely best value! The entrance is through the car park of the white Culture Ministry building next to the modern Sanorma Towers building

Honestly, it did not fully meet our expectations. The garden was quite neglected, and many of the sculptures lacked information. The exhibition itself was nice, and we enjoyed walking through it. It needs some improvement.

One of the strangest museums i ever went to. A lot of socialist statues are placed in a park like setting. Usual suspects as Marx, Lenin, Dimitrov are there but it was a weird surprise to bump into a buste of Cheka director Feliks Dzerzjinski. Inside there are some propaganda paitings which are, well propaganda paintings. Some are quite bad. Weirdest thing inside was surely the buste of Stalin. The museum is strangely fascinating but what irritated me was the total lack of any information or context. Where did the statues come from? Why were they there? Who were those people? What was (and is) their influence in Bulgaria. Without context they are just a bunch statues of serious, grim looking men in a park.

Nice little museum. The CCCP statues are amazing. You can watch some propaganda films for 4 lev. The museums artwork collection was nice but they did not feature any propaganda posters.

Didn't go inside museum, but wandered the gardens and it was very sureal. The oppression can be felt by this magnificent art.

It features a nice outdoor display of Bulgaria's socialist time propaganda monuments. Some of them are pure propaganda but some have artistic value as well. A nice feature is the red star that used to stand ontop of the old parliament building in the center of Sofia.

Nice little museum, outside you can find sculptures and inside they have mostly paintings and propaganda pamphlets. It's not that big but interesting enough to give it a quick visit. It was not busy in the weekend and you can buy tickets by bank card.

Very nice sculpture park, nice but small art collection. Worth the visit but it is a bit out of city centre with a not so easy access with the public transport. There was overall no information, explanation or narrative for the sculptures and the artwork.

A must if you are in Sofia! Interesting that a lot of the cartoons apply to today’s world just as much. Loved the sculpture garden and the newspaper caricatures in the museum.

Visiting this fascinating outdoor collection of statues and sculptures is free, but if you want to go inside the museum and see the paintings and posters, there's a small fee. For a society that rejected religion, they seemed to worship Lenin! It's quite a small museum inside, so the sculpture park is the main attraction.

Not a museum, more of a gallery but it’s a nice gallery The paintings and posters were less than I envisioned but they were pretty nice I loved them!! The statues were also AWESOME there was a cute cat lying on one of the statues There is a 30 min long propaganda film which the cashier plays it’s very interesting and has English subtitles The gift shop is kinda funny with the T shirts and the mugs but the pins are pretty nice, I also think they might sell a Lenin bust in the back but I’m not sure

Lovely building but unfortunately most shops closed, probably due to COVID. Real shame, as I love this type of indoor Market. Still worth a visit and buy something to help the stallholders still working!

It's a really modest market. Nothing really compared with Lisbon, Barcelona, or Athens, for instance. The attendance is quite low, the shops need an upgrade. The food products seemed to have quality, and it was nice to see that they preferred to sell local stuff.

An attractive indoor market in the heart of Sofia, with a decent array of food stalls selling baked products, meats, cheese, nuts and fresh produce. The first floor has a few empty units, which is a shame, though it still makes for a good vantage point to take in the charm of the building's feature and the business of the ground floor.

It is a beautiful building with a somewhat sad, but also somewhat charming interior that houses the Central Sofia Market Hall.

Kaufland Bulgaria will soon operate a new unique historical concept there.

Very nostalgic place. Pity that most of the stall are vacant. Worth a visit!

If you are to stay longer, this may be a good place to buy various things for daily life in a cheap price, like meats, vegetables, spice or so. But it's not a must place to see if you are just a tourist. Not a big space, not so much local(Bulgarian unique), nothing quitw interesting to see. This is just a small market.
