Beautiful piece of history. We did this with our three kids ages 5,3,1 years and they loved it even after having gone to the Roman bath ruins. The older two were able to walk the whole thing and I wore the baby. Lots of places for photos, not too crowded on the May weekend we went. There are many dining options right outside the building with lots of vendors and shopping. Highly recommend!

Such a beautiful area with lots of shops and places to eat. A stunning cathedral is just off the main courtyard. Worth the visit and recommend others to see the sights here.

An ancient city gate built in the Roman empire. It’s quite different from the other historical buildings I’ve been in Germany. Even though it’s unique, to be honest, there isn’t much to see inside. The information is a bit hard to access but the ticket is cheap so it’s definitely worth checking out if you are in Trier.

Impressive building with an interesting history. From decay to a pilgrim place to a double stacked church. This was then ordered to be demolished by Napoleon? And somehow a Roman gate survived. The free audio guide on your phone explains it all very well. The inside is interesting, inexpensive and gives a good view over Trier.

Beautiful! A must visit in Trier in my opinion. There was a violinist playing under the gate area too, which you could hear through the whole building. That really added to the experience and made it feel even more special.

Stunning remains of the northern city gate built by the Romans almost two millennia ago. Distinctive for its dark grey sandstone. For a small fee tourists access the upper levels but the ground level and surroundings remain free to wander.

Just walked around and through. Not sure what the inside is like, but worth just walking around. Fascinating spot right in the city centre. Perfect spot for a picture or to touch some really old rocks. Well kept area when we were there.

The Porto nigro is huge!! Much bigger than I expected. The platz is an interesting place. Very busy during the day with tourists. I felt a little unsafe wandering around at night but other than that had a great experience.

A large city gate from Roman era approximately 2000 years old. A majestic piece of Roman architecture, although a little stands of what remains now. We did not go inside but it was worth admiring the building while standing there. It is a good entry point to the city of Trier, just 10-12 minutes by walk from the train station. From here you can start your tour. Everything is in the walking distance.

This is one of the doors of the city. We decided to stop by in Trier, while returning from our trip in Luxembourg and Strasburgh. We were not disappointed. Not only the Porta is really nice to see, but the city is as well. A lot of people were here on Sunday and a lot friendly and smiley. We also found a public concert nearby.

Porta Nigra is super fun to visit and explore! Massive from the outside but equally awing while walking around within!!! Views from the city were great. The history of the old Roman entrance to the city is fascinating.

Went very late at night. 10pm. Empty. Free to roam around.beautifully lit. Very eerie. Fabulous building. Obviously if you wanted to go to the museum you would need to go during the day. Warm night. Few youths around but no problem.

It was amusing trip to German from Luxembourg. I had been went their only to see Porta Nigra. I had curious to see inside, ticket price 4 euro, as international student O had to pay 3 euro. I thought I may see many historical handy cruft inside, but it was almost empty! Only with structural building. I will not recommend too much to people to visit this place but to have a relaxation take lunch yes you may go to this area.

An extraordinary Roman city gate that is regarded to be the most intact city gate from classical times in the world (due to its incorporation into a church during the Middle Ages preventing its gradual demolition as building material was reused, which was followed by demolition of the church during Napoleon times to restore the city gate in its Roman appearance). Admission 4€, the roof level was closed for renovation, 3 other levels were accessible. One of the best Roman structures I have ever seen, especially in northwestern Europe.

Deceiving from the outside, stunning from the inside! It doesn't look as impressive as other cathedrals from the outside (at least to me as I am more used to seeing Gothic style cathedrals, not Romanesque) due to its bare brick facade, however the real beauty is hidden inside. Right at the entrance, visitors can find a huge map with explanatory points on what is to see or grab a paper brochure for a symbolic price 0.5€ providing the same information. The cathedral inside is massive, spacious, airy and very light thanks to its stunning windows (I fell in love with these simple yet unique windows) with a modern twist that lets the sun beam directly hit the cathedral's rich decorations. There are a lot of things to explore. Apart from admiring the architecture of the cathedral itself, there is a beautiful stucco ceiling in the west choir along with rich wood inlay. The giant organs hanging from the ceiling in the main nave was a surprise to me and visiting the altar area displaying the Holy Robe remains was just the icing on the cake. From there the whole beauty of the cathedral can be seen. It truly is a stunning piece of Romanesque architecture and its grandiose size does not cease to amaze me. A gift shop is located right behind the altar and that is also the place from where visitors can enter the cathedrals treasury - a single room full of relics and objects - one of the richest in Germany. The entrance fee is 1.5€ and I think it's worth it. Another place that is not to be missed is the cloister - a beautiful green oasis between the cathedral and church that is accessible to the public and visitors can freely walk around. The cloister can be entered directly from the cathedral. Restaurants and cafes are in the close proximity of the cathedral and from surrounding areas visitors are rewarded with the best views. Visited in July 2022.

Absolutely stunning architecture. So detailed and rich in the inside even if it looks a bit calmer on the outside. The Organs are the largest and most beautiful ones I've ever seen in my life, definitely worth a visit even if you're not a religious person. The historic and architetural value is priceless.

Beautiful cathedral with so many little areas to explore. When visiting don't forget to visit the courtyard/cemetery. All of the details in the architecture were breathtaking!

Wow, that's one heck of a cathedral. It's the opposite of Cologne cathedral, that I'm more used to. Light and airy, the marble ceiling subtended by wooden carved panels comes out of nowhere. Can't recommend this enough in the sun. Make sure you take a walk into the courtyard, and the Basilica next door for the remarkably intense stained glass windows.

Absolutely stunning. If the outside isn't enough, the inside is amazing! We sat outside the cathedral and had lunch at the tapas place in the area there. Lovely to take in the view.

Absolutely breathtaking place. I love, love, LOVE the architecture here. It's definitely worth visiting and it's completely free too. You don't have to be religious to admire this place, if you're into history and art, this is it.

Absolutely stunning and the fact this was built so long ago with such detail is a testament to architecture. When this place is open it is a must see, you feel different walking inside here and lighting a candle to lost loved ones is also amazing. This medieval gothic design is amazing. I can’t say enough how pretty.

A magnificent Romanesque cathedral that has stood at the heart of Trier since Roman times. The core of the church dates back to Roman times, but the current structure has been rebuilt and restored many times. It holds a famous relic, said to be the tunic of Christ on his crucifixion and this was a major place of pilgrimage in medieval times. The carvings within the church, and the organs on the walls are most impressive to see. There are crypts beneath the cathedral, but they do not hold much of historical importance.

Fantastic place, vast, elaborate so much history, really impressed and free to enter. Small amounts of the original plaster with frescos and painted patterns hidden on some of the pillars. Look for them. Imagine how the interior must of looked when it was all painted inside like that. I think the 'robe' of Jesus was just another medieval con, so many of these fake items circulated then to bring in the paying pilgrims. This building was seriously damaged in 1944 bombings. The restoration work had been an amazing project.

The Trier Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral and the oldest church in Germany. The construction of this structure is said to have started in the 4th century on land that had ancient Roman structures. Its grand design and massive structure are worth admiring. From the inside too, the cathedral looks lovely. The work on the walls and ceiling ( baroque west choir ceiling), the church organ and the golden gate should not be missed.

This place is mind blowing. One of the most beautiful and interesting cathedrals I have ever witnessed. From the outside it looks like a fortress. You are fully able to walk around throughout it and I was surprised by the amount of access allowed to the public for free. Wish I had more time to explore this amazing spot. A must see in my opinion.

Was here on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed with people having a good time,there are plenty of choices available for food and the wine stall is also very popular,the building facades are beautiful to see just by themselves,Trier is certainly a charming city

Represents a typical old German town. Very picturesque market square with lots of restaurants and bier places around. The place is always bustling with people, mostly tourists. The place has many beautifully preserved medieval era buildings around. To have a better experience, I would recommend to sit with a chilled bier at one of the bier places and absorb the vibes. Many options for shopping lovers.

It was a wonderful experience shopping in the Hauptmarkt.. Lot of well known brands and a lot of places had discounts. Icing on the cake is that a lot of café's and restaurants are also located which makes us to 'Shop, Eat and Repeat' :)

Very picturesque market square with plenty of amazing medieval and beautifully decorated buildings all around. One to specifically point out - Steipe - the old town hall. In the middle of the square stunning Petrusbrunnen fountain is located - surrounded with statues of four cardinal virtues. Overall one of the prettiest squares I have visited in any of the German towns. During our time of visit (Saturday afternoon) the square was busy, I dare to say crowded, with tourists and visitors. Farmers market (only on Saturday I believe) and many cafes, bars and restaurants alongside the square just entice more and more people, making it hard to walk let alone enjoy the place. Visited in July 2022.

Beautiful city square with lots of shopping and restaurants. Whenever we visit we park in the Trier City Parking which is only a few minutes away.

Price is perfectly reasonable : 4€ per adults. Dogs are welcome. You are given a map from the counter on which information can be found. But therefore the place itself may lack of signs. A small exposition can be found next to the counter (before going outdoors to visit). What should be kept in mind is that it is requested not to walk off the trails. You can visit on your own. Some parts of the ancient Roman Imperial thermals are visible but there is also a huge underground part that is important not to miss out ! Mobility-impaired people can visit the thermals except for the underground, which we can only access through stairs.

Although it was raining on the day when I visited this great site, but walking through the underground galleries was a great experience. The scale of various spaces were mind blowing.

Amazing to walk through these ancient baths that were developed by Constantine The Great. Visited many other locations associated with Constantine, such as Rome, Istanbul (Constantinople), Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Such incredible history to be able to experience.

Not much left of Roman baths structure, however the biggest and the best surprise was the underground tunnels that stretched everywhere. Parking space very close ( free on Sunday) with an entry fee €4 per adult so definitely worth a visit!

The ruins of the main bath house are impressive and still give us a good impression on how splendid it must have been in its Roman glory days. Marvel at the ingenuity of its engineering

Super neat spot with fascinating history. Spent about an hour and a half here walking through the tunnels and reading about the history of the area. Inexpensive entry and has lots of information about the cite in several languages. There are bathrooms on-site that do not cost extra.

Well preserved Roman ruins that is under continued works for restoration. You pay a small fee to access the site and the underground of this ancient bath place (sewage and channels). Visit Trier’s website www.trier-info.de, and plan in advance your visit to the ruins and to the rest your of the city.

Really neat experience as it's self guided and you get to walk the grounds and go underground inside the bathhouse, well what remains of it.

If you’re in Trier the baths are a must!! The underground section was a very unique experience, and I was impressed by the information boards scattered across the above ground site. When archaeological sites are active, so much is going into the preservation of the site that surpasses preservation. What’s culturally significant, profitable and sustainable is something that’s covered here. Rather than a simple walk through history, the self guided tour was interesting and focused on the big questions and challenges archaeologists have had to consider as they’ve made plans to preserve the space for visitors. It’s relevant but to the point. Most museums don’t do as well, in my opinion. In general it was an affordable and fun stop to have added to a short visit to trier

The Kaiserthermen site is really a must see. The site is more extensive than we imagined so carve out a couple hours for it. To enter costs about 5 euro and there are several sections to see. The first area is the visitor’s center which has a 3-d model and a short film about the site that helps you to see it as it must have been in its heyday. The next section to see is the tower from which you can see the whole complex. It is three levels with an elevator or stairs. The next part is the above ground section. An active archeological dig is going on so you can see that progress and there is very interesting interpretive signage in German and English. The ground is mostly grass and packed dirt so it’s not smooth but still accessible. The last section to see is the underground area which is like a maze—so fun! It is accessed only by stairs. Once below, there are open skylights but also harsh shadows so you might want to bring a small flashlight. There are many passageways and rooms but only a little signage. We went on a weekday in September and only saw a couple other people visiting the site.

The best-preserved Roman public bath in Germany. Surface buildings can still show the magnificent momentum at the beginning. The underground tunnel is very complicated and tortuous, the space is huge, and visitors can visit the underground tunnel. The ticket price is five euros, and after the reduction, it is three euros. But there is no tour guide.

4 euro fee, my small children were free. The underground tunnels and rooms were cool to see. Overall nice history.

Beautiful Roman site that has been part of many different structures but of which the west and north side are assumed to originate from Roman times. Absolutely worth visiting, no admission. Beautiful building with many different construction and renovation phases.

The site of Roman emperor Constantine's throne room. The building is impressive and you can see how people would be overwhelmed when seeking an audience. Today it is used as a church. It is still an impressive structure that is stood the test of time. I am amazed at the construction and ability to build such a huge open space with support beams for the central ceiling.

This was once a throne room in Roman times. The imposingly large Roman building is one of the best preserved buildings from late antiquity. It is now a church, but it once was a throne room for emperors such as Constantine the Great when they were based in Trier. It has been restored many times and the roof and sections of the walls are not original, but it is still very impressive indeed.

Protestant church that was a throne room of the Roman Empire. It is very simple and it might seem a bit empty. The organ gives it its touch of modernity. When we went there, we found a small exhibition on the war inside. The palace is right behind it.

Incredible history! It’s a Roman palace basilica and an early Christian structure that was built between AD 300 and AD 310. You can read more about it inside. The organ being played was a treat to hear. Parking is very close. There are gardens out front of it and restaurants and shopping across the street.

Possibly the most impressive church I have visited in my life. I laugh now as I thought this was a cathedral, but is actually the church. We spent a good hour visiting this extraordinary church and all its many layers, trust me I’m normally the first to be out of a church, but this truly felt like a place that could make you believe in something if like me you are an atheist. I’d loved to have seen a service, I can imagine this place is just so popular. It’s clearly well loved and maintained. There is an interesting heating system, and random construction filled with human remains. If you visit trier you simply have to visit this magnificent building.

Absolute masterpiece! And the colors! Wow! Did not have high expectations as the church looked like any other church in Germany, but what I saw inside took my breath away! It was probably the most impressive and colorful church I have visited. The light coming through the colored stained glass windows felt almost magical, something surreal and left a wonderful impression on me. Definitely worth visiting on a sunny day! I did enjoy the layout, or I should say floor plan, as it has a rounded base and with the portal and altar niches built in, the floor plan resembles a rose, a symbol of the Virgin Mary. It is a compact church, absolutely perfect for ceremonies for weddings (I would love to attend one here), yet magnificent and massive in size, especially looking up at the tall vaulted ceiling. Worth noticing are also the frescoes on the columns, on each of them depicting 12 apostles. The church is free to enter and it's worth visiting the open cloister and the Saint Peter's Cathedral next door. Visited in July 2022.

What an absolutely magical church! The glass work is unique, unlike any other church I have seen in Europe. Trier felt a bit disappointing this far, crowded and touristy, a bit lack lustre and this church made up for all of it for me. A definite MUST VISIT.

This place is shown as one of the main attractions in the Trier tourism. But in reality, you can just view it from outside. It is not worth spending 5€ to go inside the house since they just have known facts and information about Karl Max's life. The house inside looks normal and well maintained.

It's a little museum. It costs 5€, which is about right. This is a really basic overview of Karl Marx and his thought. The house is nice to walk through. Most of the displays reminded me of a kids school project. I enjoyed the museum, I gave it ⭐⭐⭐ because I don't want to over-hype it. My favorite parts were Karl's chair from his time in London and the statue in the garden. It would have been nice to see more artifacts from Marx's life, maybe they are hard to come by.

Good for Karl Marx fans only. Very few artifacts from Karl Marx real life, but lots of Wikipedia type of information presented in a very simple way. Just some stands with texts and pictures. Lots of praising for Karl Marx’s ideas. The house itself is where Karl Marx was born, and host wealthy parents used to live.

Fascinating and fun historical house. There were some unique storytelling elements, such as hourglasses to depict how much of Marx's life was spent in various places, and a chair that speaks to you from beyond the grave. A must-see for any visit to Trier.

This museum is located in the house that Karl Marx was born in. It has lots of information about Marx, his life, his ideologies, etc. There aren’t very many artifacts, it's mostly informative displays and some photos with written information to read. Expect to spend a lot of time reading, as the majority of the museum is text. It has a very modern and artistic feel to it. The museum is three floors and there is also a garden.

Great museum, really broad perspective to Karl Marx’s life and ideas, museum also gave you opportunity to understand the effects of his works. Quite educational experience.

A museum dedicated to the life and influence of Karl Marx. The museum is based in the house where Marx was born. While he did not spend much of his life here, he did spend his early life in Trier. The museum has materials in a variety of different languages and it is informative, but it does definitely help if you already have some familiarity with Marx and his writings.

This was an unexpected museum for me. I was not going to go in. I got a ticket and enjoyed the displays. I can only read English. There was a lot of information and I enjoyed how it was displayed. The garden was wonderful too.

It’s good to be here at the birth place of Karl Max. Not an easy find. I meant you won’t easily notice from outside simply walking by. Nicely kept, but surprising we were the only ones inside the haus (house). I read about the history of Karl Max from this place. Entry fee is 5 euros and can even spend a whole day there reading and understanding the literature inside the monument.

Nice place to know about the life of a thinker who found the concept of worker's rights, redistribution of wealth through government spending and modern welfare state!

I guess it's fun to see. Marx was born here and lived here for about a year. It's inexpensive and a quick stop if you do not read everything. However, the information is quite extensive if you're interested in all of it (mostly deals with the effects of Marx's work) and it is laid out logically.

The museum is laden with information about Karl Marx, his life and ideology. That said, it relied too much on text for my taste, which was seldom brought to life by the displays. Some of the English text was also quite poorly formulated and had to be read a few times to get the gist of. The small garden at the back was a highlight, providing a break from the monotony inside, but not quite enough to save the experience for me.

Trier is the birthplace of Karl Marx, the German philosopher, economist and socialist revolutionary. A few meters from the city centre is the baroque house where he was born. Today, the property is owned by SDP ( Socialist Democratic Party). It is converted into a museum that showcases the important works of Karl Marx and the influence they had on society. The displays are both in German and English. There is an adjoining garden too. No waiting time. Ticket can be bought at the entrance.

fine museum about the history of Trier with beautiful pieces to view. there are different levels with different historical pieces to visit. There is an audio guide, also in Dutch, German or English. There is a lot to see so definitely take some time to calculate to see everything calmly.

A museum showing the history of the city of Trier and the surrounding lands. The museum starts with the history of the first inhabitants of these lands, passing from the Stone Age through to the Celtic tribes who were here and then to the Roman occupation and into the medieval period. As befits the oldest city in Germany, there is a great deal to see here. Do note that the descriptions of the artefacts are done in German, so if you read no German, it may be best to purchase an audio guide.

I went there on a Thursday and there were very few visitors so it was nice to take some pictures. The collection is incredible, how are the people there so calm knowing that they have some very important historical pieces from hundreds and thousands of years ago??? 😆

A museum about Trier from Prehistoric to modern period. Eight euros for entrance but you can buy a museum card (valid for one week). The ticket box is a bit weird, located in the outside museum. The nearest parking is Parkhaus Basilika, next to Kaiserthermen, Aula Palatina, and city wall (stads mauer)

Very nice museum, i was really impressed by the huge collection of artifacts. Specially the Roman Tombs are insane. You can visit at least two to three hours here.. Also, they have a multimedia show at 12, extra cost, around these Roman tombs. So why 4 stars and not 5? Well, German signs all over the place, hardly anything in other language. You can get a free audio tour though. Another thing, the multimedia show, we took the Dutch language guide, but the sound in German was so loud, you could here it through the headphone. Also context about what you see is erm... Nowhere, honestly i had no idea what this show was about.... So yes, fantastic museum, could be better if they think more about other languages....

When you would like to visit a another demension, please visit this museum. Lovely roman period related items, statues and thing they had to make their lives better. Really recommand it. You also have faults to store your loaded bags as well. They have little phones to listen to the history of each object. You can spend 1-2 hours here. Enjoy!

A museum that covers the history of Trier and the surrounding area from the Stone Age to the French Revolution. There is limited information given in English but a free audio guide was provided. We found the layout a bit confusing but I think we managed to see most rooms in the correct sequence. The Roman section is the star of the show for me, much like Trier in general. More details about the exhibits on the audio guide would be good.

Good museum and lots of historical information about this city of Trier. We enjoyed visiting the place as a tourist with our family and learned a lot. Highly recommended place for families.

As someone who loves ancient history, I’d give this 6 stars if I could. Absolutely spectacular statuary, mosaics and the fantastic gold hoard. Even better than the museum in Split, which is saying something.

Really impressive and extensive collection covering the history of Trier and its surroundings. Starting in prehistoric times and ending with the phrase "after which Trier became an insignificant border town in the Moselle area." The history of Trier is a very interesting one which is obviously all due to its Roman past. As late capital of the western roman empire and overall very rich town in these times many things have been well preserved and the museum does a good job of giving an impression of the city back then. There's lots of information well laid out, however it is mostly in German. If you do not speak German I definitely recommend the free audio guide available also in french English and Dutch.

The palace is next to the basilica. The facade is a gorgeous Rococo style with lavish pink and gold decorations. There are some marble sculptures in front of the palace. The large garden and lawn balance the splendidness. Because it’s so picturesque, some people were taking wedding pictures there. The pond at the side provides serenity.

The gardens in front of the Palace are amazing. Very well maintained and peaceful. They attract visitors of all ages and the playgrounds next to them are very convenient for parents with small kids. The white sculptures and the pond add to the beauty of the green surroundings.

There is a beautiful garden you can take a rest here.

Nicely coloured palace with beautiful rococo façade surrounded by joyful and nice gardens full of sculptures. Its a great place to relax and reflect after a long day touring Trier. The palace's vibrant pink color and its rich rococo façade are simply stunning, making them perfect background for wedding photography. Apparently visitors can access the interiors by booking a tour, however I did not have time to do that, I did rather take a stroll around in beautifully maintained and manicured gardens with ponds and fountains. There is a café located in the middle of the gardens and at the south corner an entrance to the Kaiserthermen can be found. Visited in July 2022.

Truly a fabulous place, the botanical park, the lake, the village, the buildings, everything is preserved and beautiful. It is worth sitting on a bench for 30 minutes.

Although you are not able to tour the inside at the moment, it’s still a beautiful place to visit. The gardens are gorgeous, there is a huge playground for kids and a pond that had a ton of ducks just hanging around.

The thought that this bridge we crossed daily during our vacation is hundreds or even thousands of years old is quite baffling. Those Romans really knew what they were doing! The parts of the city around the bridge, not quite as inspirational sadly...

Beautiful old Roman brigde, mostly full of cars, but in rare occasions when it's sunny, it looks wonderful. The surrounding area is conceputally connected with the old walls and remains of rhe Roman fortifications. Good for a nice walk by the Moselle river.

Historic bridge built by the Romans, you can appreciate the quality of this construction and how it still stands so strong till this day. You can walk by River Moselle and reach the bridge its one of the best walking track by the river.

Very nice Roman Bridge. My main purpose of going there was to take pictures but I got there during rush hour so it was very busy there with a lot of cars

The Roman Bridge spans the Moselle beyond the old city center. It is about 1 km or more to get there from the city center but worth it if you want exercise or to also visit the Barbarathermen site. I wish there had been more signage about the bridge. You can walk along the tree lined street which is shady or along the river where the path is very wide for bikes and pedestrians. This bridge still shows the Roman foundations (grey stone). Also along the river are a couple of round buildings that used to hold cranes for taking goods off the ships on the Moselle. This section of the Moselle was very shallow while we were there but there were still a few boats on it. There is some graffiti and trash but we felt totally safe there during the day.

Represents a typical old German town. Very picturesque market square with lots of restaurants and bier places around. The place is always bustling with people, mostly tourists. The place has many beautifully preserved medieval era buildings around. To have a better experience, I would recommend to sit with a chilled bier at one of the bier places and absorb the vibes. Many options for shopping lovers.

It was a wonderful experience shopping in the Hauptmarkt.. Lot of well known brands and a lot of places had discounts. Icing on the cake is that a lot of café's and restaurants are also located which makes us to 'Shop, Eat and Repeat' :)

Very picturesque market square with plenty of amazing medieval and beautifully decorated buildings all around. One to specifically point out - Steipe - the old town hall. In the middle of the square stunning Petrusbrunnen fountain is located - surrounded with statues of four cardinal virtues. Overall one of the prettiest squares I have visited in any of the German towns. During our time of visit (Saturday afternoon) the square was busy, I dare to say crowded, with tourists and visitors. Farmers market (only on Saturday I believe) and many cafes, bars and restaurants alongside the square just entice more and more people, making it hard to walk let alone enjoy the place. Visited in July 2022.

This place is now a coffee shop called Coffee fellows. It is a coffee and bagels chain. They serve one of the best summer drinks in the form of iced teas. Also if you are a coffee lover it is must visit location. The ambience is really good.

Dreikönigenhaus or the House of the Three Magi is one of three surviving residential towers of the High Middle Ages still preserved in Trier. Located on Simeonstraße, this unusual buiding was built in 1230 as a residential tower of a rich merchant. It received its name much later from the legend of the Holy Kings or the three wise men who came to worship the Baby Jesus. What made the structure unique was that it had no access on the lower floor; one had to enter the house using a ladder through the rightmost window on the first floor. It was a sign of the times when Trier had no fortress walls and was prone to attack by neighbouring invaders. In case of danger the ladder was pulled up, and the residents on third and fourth floors could respond, for example, by pouring boiling water. The building also has a distinct characteristic in comparison to other residential structures in the vicinity. Built in Moorish style, Dreikönigenhaus has large windows with pointed, semi-circular arches, a magnificently designed gable panel crowns the building. In the wall surface, the colors change impressively through the various building materials and the paintings, which were refreshed in 1973 according to original patterns. The building currently houses a restaurant on the ground floor.

Very interesting story of St Gangolf. Finding the entry to this church is a puzzle which is worth awhile when visiting Trier. You would see the tower of the church from Hauptmarkt but, you would be riddled with the shops and restaurants beside it.

Maybe I have been overwhelmed after visiting the famous cathedral, so my 4 stars may seem bit harsh, but I still think this one is definitely worth visiting. After all, it is located in city center. Germany does love her churches and this one is no exception, and it is well maintained so give her a go and take a few shots with your camera.

I was particularly drawn to the church's Gothic features and color scheme rivaling that of an apricot. As if to beckon me welcome, a magnolia was blossoming in the chilly spring weather, its petals scattering across the wind with each breeze. it was truly magical. I appreciated visiting the Church of St Gangolf was its relatively lack of visitors. It was not a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and with it partially blocked by surrounding buildings despite its tower sticking out, made it not very obvious as a visitor's spot. I was fortunate that I was lured in by the baroque portal that led me to it, otherwise I would be as ignorant as the next traveler. Definitely a place which I recommend highly to those who prefer something slightly off the beaten path.

The most remarkable about the 'market-church' of Trier is that it's completely build in and the only way to reach it is through a small portal between houses on the market. Inside is nice, but nothing to outstanding.

Its a very holy place but Mass is always conducted in German language. I wish they could use English sometimes. Apart from this its a very holy place for worship.
