Go just for a walk down and to enjoy the views(panoramic view). But far out of the town for anything else. Nothing really near by. Go but don't make it a must do list.

Very clean and bright looking promenade close to Livorno Harbour.

A lovely open air space sandwiched by the sea and the city. The warmly-coloured chequered marble floor, the tall palm trees and the grand bandstand in the centre made it an ideal place for sitting, strolling, jogging, running and cycling. Feel a bit like the LA's Santa Monica sidewalk but without the sandy beach!!

While visiting Pisa we took the train to Livorno for the afternoon. A bus from the station brought us to the Terrazza Mascagni. It is a lovely walk along chequered tiles surrounded by a waist high wall, which gave beautiful views over the Ligurian sea. There are benches where you can sit and rest / enjoy the views. While there was a cafe nearby the restaurants were all closed by 2.30 / 3pm so make sure you eat before you visit. I would also recommend when buying bus tickets that you buy return tickets as well as it is difficult to find anywhere that sells them.

This area (contrary to other reviews) is NOT well maintained at all. Haven’t been here for a few years, but it looks like material choice was wrong for the balustrades… appears that saltwater has soaked into the concrete and corroded the reinforcing bars - shattering many of the top stones. Now looks a real mess… 🤦‍♂️ Give this a miss - just not worth the walk from town, unless using one of the private beach front facilities nearby.

The views of the city from here are amazing. Plus it's a Great place to park and walk into the city from, which we did. Parking fees were reasonable. They also have a bus stop there as well. It can get very busy so be aware of that. We came just after a rain storm and found parking easily, but when we returned after our visit it was very crowded. Wonderful place either way!

Nice aquarium. The first floor has several sea animals and is done in about 30-45 min. Second floor has insects and reptiles and is done in about 20 minutes. Interesting animals and the price of 12 euros is okay. Presentation sometimes was lacking and the provided information or text were sometimes for other animals.

Great place with several different species from the world. It is not that big, but it is for sure a good family experience 😊. The second floor has some terrestrial species like an interesting ant environment and transparent tubes for seeing them carrying the food.

Nice place where to hide with small kids in a hot day for a few hours. Suggesting to increase the free entry for kids to 120 cm (not up to 1 meter only) as I had to lift even the taller one to many of the aquariums anyway. Some banners are also in English, but not all unfortunatelly. Anyway we've enjoyed it much.

The turtles are wonderful. Otherwise smallish and quite pricey for the size. There are no family tickets and reduced prices are only valid for small children (literally <140cm). Get your tickets in advance (online) to save if you're a larger group.

Nice Aquarium to visit during a raining or even a hot day. It is not that large, you will spend 1 to 1.5 hours inside. Visited on a weekday during high season. No waiting queue and parked at the front door (about 3eur for 2 hours). Bought the entrance tickets online at the aquarium itself (requires creditcard) and the sooner you do'll this, the more discount you get. Facilities are okay, but there is option to buy some food.

The place is beautiful, the aquariums are well maintained, but there are too few things to admire. In an hour and a half, the visit to the aquarium was almost over, maybe even faster than that. Anyway, I visited this place on a very rainy day, so no regrets.

The aquarium isn't very big, but it's very interesting. My kid loved it as the turtles were bigger than him and there are some very interesting fish and sharks.

Here from the US for our honeymoon and the weather was windy and rainy today. This was a perfect place to go. Good size, good price & clean. We truly enjoyed it.

It is a great place to show sea life to your children. It is a bit time fatigued, but it is Italy, so sun made it like that. It has a nice observation deck though, where one can see really far away, incl. many ships approaching port. Next to it there is a water park, so the whole day can be easily spent there. An in the same building there is a very good restaurant as well, does not belong to aquarium though.

Very moved by as well as interested in the folk art of the ex voto in the sanctuary - and the pharmacy selling bio products (tisanes, sweets, shampoo etc) is very good. Definitely worth a visit - especially if you combine it with a gastronomic pilgrimage to the fabulous Osteria fonte del penitente nearby (not the ones in the square in front of the sanctuary which are really grim)

Beautiful architecture and act of faith..

My military family lived in Livorno for several years and we frequently frequented this beautiful Sanctuary of the ‘Madonna di Montenero’ while we were all very young . As Catholics, My brother and I made our 1STHoly Communion there. It is a miraculous Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces. So unbelievable, so unforgettable, so NEEDED in these times of turmoil. It is up on a mountain overlooking the beautiful Naval Port of the ancient City of Livorno. 👍😄🏆🌹🍃

A magical, special place. Went to mass - it was packed with a million kids, wonderfully serene. Afterwards, a beautiful courtyard with shops offering religious merchandise, and a gallery of gratitude notes from those who prayed here. Special reverence towards St John Paul II. Next doir: amazing restaurant "Montallegro" with wonderful, authentic food and amazing views and a lush garden.

This is one of the stops when doing the open top bus tour. The price includes a ticket for the furnicular - time it right to get the next bus back, although when we were there he did wait for any latecomers. Well worth a stop for the views and wander round. Maybe just enough time for a coffee!

We arrived there after checking the opening times on the official website and after driving 1h from where our accomodation was. We struggled to park as there is NO parking in the area and we had a massive SUV (very bad idea in Italy)....after we struggled for 15 mins to find a place we went to the monastery and entered. 30 seconds later a very aggressive and rude man started to shout at us in Italian and literally threw us out with no explanation. We stopped at the restaurant nearby for a coffee and the lovely ladies explained the monastery is closed for an hour or two for lunch. All in all a terrible expereince, waste of money and time and I would not recommend the place as it is nothing to see or do...besides being bullied that is.

We mainly came to use the free washrooms in the market. It's a bit old. But it's also a good experience for us to walk around this local market. The free wifi service didn't work for us, though. Couldn't figure out how to register for it because the language was Italian.

For a slice of local life and color, don't miss Livorno's Central Market, near the Piazza Cavour in a late 19th-century building designed by Angiolo Badaloni. Every morning except Sunday, the dining room is a riot of activity as locals fill their shopping bags with food from more than 200 stalls and shops. You can sample local cheeses and salamis, and stocks for picnics on the beach. Small stalls inside serve ground coffee and breakfast pastries. Adjacent to the market is a vibrant and colorful outdoor farmer's market.

Beautiful traditional market. It’s not just about buying stuff, it’s an amazing experience for all the senses. You can find all sort of fresh local produce, vegetables, fruits, fish (awesome quality!), meats, etc. You can also find fresh pasta and freshly baked goods, including artisanal breads, focaccia, pizza, and more. It’s truly one of the best markets in Tuscany and prices are much more affordable than supermarkets, while quality is top notch. If you drive, parking is limited outside, so it’s better to leave the car a bit far and walk.

Visiting the Mercato was one of the highlights and top experiences we had in Livorno, a city we really enjoyed. Fantastic array of fresh and other food stuffs, from cheese and wine, to seafood and sweet treats. Stallholders were very friendly and helpful. We visited twice to do 'proper' shopping for our holiday accommodation pantry. Overall really good value and lots of local and different produce and products all under one roof. Whilst we did nt, there's also a number of cafes or kiosks where you can have a snack or lunch.

Very nice market, nice to go early morning when it's quiet. Good mix of fresh vegetables, meat, fish, cheese and all types of bread. A few are empty but still a nice experience. Nice to see all the fresh seafoods. Closed on Sunday but also on Monday the activity is low(er) and pretty limited choice so avoid going on a Monday.

Awesome Market! You will find everything here. Lots of fresh meat, cheese, fish, pasta, veggies and fruits. It is nice to have a chat with the people who explain the origin of their products. You will find special olive oil here in super high quality from Toscana and italy.

Friendly people, fabulous local seafood, ham at local prices. The operator at coffee shop in the middle is friendly, makes good coffee, have nice white wine & 100 pointer olive oil.

Super great market! The sort of place you would want to stop by every single day to buy your groceries. The people who work there are very nice too.

The view from the fortress is very nice! The information boards are well written and kept interesting. Sadly, the fortress is poorly lighted so it is not possible to see some parts after dark (which is problematic since it opens at 7p.m.). Not only the fortress is poorly lighted at some places, but the pathways also have no light, so I had to help myself with a flashlight. I wouldn’t recommend going there with small children after dark, unless you always hold their hand (it could be a safety hazard). Worth going there for the view (especially from the tower). Just be a little careful! Also, the entrance is free.

Old ancient place. Great view all around the city

On a quiet Sunday this was a lovely place to have a rest in the shade, there were local dog walkers who were very respectful of those who had come to sit quietly and the views were lovely. An interesting place to look at and discover and a wonderful use of a historical building to create a wonderful public space. A pity about garbage being left by previous visitors.

I'm not sure how secure this castle was in its hey day, but it's design makes it a pleasant place to visit and the views are good too. It was extremely hot on the day of our visit and this also provided us with some respite whilst having a look round!

Usually a quiet place very close to the center. It was a Fortress and still has a moat, which is a canal, around its high brick walls. A nice sight on the surrounding area from above and a lot of green.

Nuova Venezia (New Venice) In the 1620s, when Livorno needed to expand to accommodate the growing population, a new district was planned for the area between the old and new fortress. However, the area was laced with moats that surrounded the ancient city walls, and has since become important waterways for moving goods between the harbor and the warehouses next to them. So the architects borrowed construction techniques from Venice, which led to the name of this neighborhood, which means New Venice. You can tour this picturesque neighborhood on a boat tour of Fortezza Nuova - the new fortress - and follow the canal below the Piazza della Repubblica. Explore on foot to explore Santa Caterina Cathedral, with its beautiful 17th century wooden choir stalls and a large altar, Coronation of the Blessed Virgin, by Giorgio Vasari.

One of the main attractions of the city! Worth visiting! There are bars inside, nice place to grab a beer and hide from hot summer weather.

An impressive relic from a bygone age but practically impossible to explore. There are signs saying you can enter the fort to look around but I couldn’t find a way in an I eventually gave up.

When you get really tired of observing the surrounding buildings, the happenings around the ferry and you get to know (in quotation marks) all the fellow passengers around you, you turn into a historian in the best way. For now, you are interested in the history of surrounding buildings, even though they are extremely boring and timeless... Well, this is a few minutes for your education... although it is further from volunteering... Interesting walls and fort that you should visit when waiting for the ferry. No loss! This place is amazing. They are doing a good job of restoring it but much is still preserved. You are allowed to walk through and park for free. It appeared to have a self guided tour you could connect to via a QR code with your phone. Beautiful views, intriguing passages, and helpful resources with English translation.

Fortress stays next to the ferry port giving you nice panorama on the old town too. Nice, worth of climbing up although the maintenance can be improved.

This monument is looking horrifying at the first glance. You can see slaves, but it is not "celebrating slavery". I recomend to read information which are from the side of the monument. I forgot to take a picture of it. From the artistic side, it is a masterpiece and you can really see and feel suffering of the enslaved prisoners. "It celebrates the victories of the Grand Duke Ferdinando I de 'Medici and the Order of the Knights of Santo Stefano over the Moori pirates who raided the Tuscan coasts." "He enacted an edict of tolerance for Jews and heretics and Livorno became a haven for Spanish Jews as well as other persecuted foreigners."

Pretty fascinating monument. It's size and stature draws the eye then the four moors chained to its based demands further enquiry. It was completed in 1626 to commemorate the victories of Ferdinand I of Tuscany over the Ottomans. 'Moor' meant 'dark' and was used to designate non Europeans who attached or raided southern Europe from North Africa or the East Mediterranean. After spending another week working in Livorno this statue is certainly the most captivating and well worth seeing. It's not far from New Venice or the historic forts.

Important but problematic monument from the 16th-early 17th centuries. The monument it not in its original location or configuration, but is is extraordinary for the four bronze sculptures by Tacca representing the "types" of people who were enslaved to work on the Medici ships and port of Livorno. I say "types" w scare quotes bc some think two of the figures, atleast, are portraits of real people. That can owed to Tacca's attention to the people as human rather than stereotypes. For the time period it was much more common to show enslaved people as ignorant and without humanity. Not here. I could go on, but won't. I recommend looking up the history of the monument. Lots online in past few years as the monument was the site of BLM gatherings in Livorno. We are so lucky the over life size bronze sculptures were not destroyed (melted down) for their material in the 19th century! Two other parts (fountains) of the monument are found one piazza over. There is also a nice cafe just across street from monument where you can sit outside and contemplate the view.

Appalling, atrocious, disgusting piece. If art is meant to provoke feelings, it surely achieved it with me. I went around it again and again inspecting closely at what I was witnessing. Yes, I read the caption below, yes I googled it's history and NO ! I cannot justify its existence in a European city in 2022! Men of colour suffering in chains ??? Whatever happened in the past should stay there - this is not art ! It's a reminder that people are still racist. Remove this ASAP ! P.S : I left Livorno 10mins after I saw it. Excellent experience, I would definitely recommend you love art and especially Fattori, although there aren't that many paintings by him. When we visited there was an exhibition on Giovanni Gambogi, a painter I did not know, but also worth the visit. The house itself is a very interesting, historical building.

While beautiful in its own way, I wouldn't want to go back because finding a parking is almost impossible, there are no footpaths to the beach, and the beach is a rock. Totally not a place for toddlers, though ours had a little bit of fun watching crabs, urchins and other tiny sea creatures.

It's an amazing place. I strongly recommend to go there!

If you arnt looking you might miss it but this is a sight to behold. Put a marker and visit it.

It's a good place for the ladies to shop and the men to watch the world go by. The roads around the square are very busy, and whilst I was sitting there, in twenty minutes there must have been for or five incidents that almost came to blows. In early afternoon on a bright summer's day it got so hot that I am sure you could try eggs on the could stone.

Republic Square is Livorno's main town square on the far side of Via Grande, the main street dividing the city. Admire the plaza's impressive statues and beautiful gardens and learn about its history and secrets. Designed by Italian architect Luigi Bettarini in the early 19th century, the square is truly a monumental bridge. Livorno is a solid ancient city protected by a moat. Republic Square is located right above this moat, which is why it is often referred to as Voltone ("The Big Dome"). If you take a boat tour through the canals of Livorno, you will pass right below the square. See two giant statues spanning the square. The statue of Ferdinando III, Grand Duke of Toscana, stands on the side of the New Fort. A statue of his son, Leopold II, the last reigning Grand Duke of Toscana, is on the opposite side.

One small city in Italy, nothing special to see there in the city...One day is more than enough to explore city..The good thing you can go to Piza and Florence from Livorno.

Quite an unexpected find in this underrated city. The piazza is actually above a canal. Apparently it’s Europe’s largest bridge! Large enough for Rudy. I find port towns are always fascinating and vibrant with culture as they are gateways to the world. Perhaps not always the prettiest but Livorno has some real historic architectural gems.

Very nice museum though the botanical garden looks like it hasn't been maintained for months. The staff was friendly though, and the parts within the building were maintained well. I did enjoy visiting so I would surely come again if I knew what I know now. It was a pity that most of the descriptions only were in Italian but that didn't bother me as much as the condition of the botanical garden.

This Museum is almost exclusively in Italian but it has informative pictures. The museum containing information about human evolution from monkeys to what we are today, family tree of animals and dinosaurs and a marine exhibition with a 20 m long whale skeleton.

The museum in itself is nothing extraordinary, but it is quite interesting nonetheless. I really like the park around it, which also has a small amphitheatre, a weather tower and a modern annex used for temporary exhibitions.

Very charming church, it's high dome and tower can be seen across Livorno. I found it's worn and half maintained look interesting and poignant. The inside is surprising lavish with nice statues and murals, but its a shame the painting on the Dome have crumbled. The entire area is a great stop off point as you walk though Neovo Venice.

A cute little baroque church that we could see from the new castle park so we decided to walk to it and check it out. The architecture is very contrasting with the dome being a markedly different style than the lower level construction. Very beautiful painted inside.
