A tranquil beautiful place. The building was quite overwhelming in its quiet magnificence. So disappointed not to be able to take photos but totally understood. The ceilings around the altar are so breathtaking in their beauty. The architecture and different painted scenes are complex and overwhelming in the skill seen. Some of the best I have witnessed in my journey to Rome and Assissi. Italy's architectural gifts are blessed. The crypt where the remains of St Francis lies is small well lit staffed and busy. There are pews to rest upon to enjoy moments of quiet reflection and candles can be purchased which are lit after one's departure. The views from outside the Basilica are far reaching and splendid. A place to hold in the heart.

I have been here multiple times and it impresses each time, which is why I keep coming back. Visiting the upper and lower Basilicas is incredible. The beautiful frescos by themselves are worth a visit. We spent >1 hour visiting the entire complex. I highly recommend the free Rick Steve’s audio guide tour when visiting. If you come to Assisi this is a must visit location. If you are questioning whether to make a visit to Assisi this should make the decision easier. There is a wonderful spirit of St. Francis here.

The Basilica of St. Francis is marvellous and mystical place, bringing together a number of renaissance masterpieces and an extraordinary architectonic complexity. Cimabue, Giotto, the Lorenzetti brothers, Simone Martini – the greatest artists of the 14th Century, have painted frescoes on the walls and ceilings of this place. An obligatory destination for believers and non-believers alike, appreciating art and architecture.

We enjoyed walking the streets of the little village of Assisi. Assisi was the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order in 1208. Papal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi was where St. Francis was born and died. The Basilica consists of an upper and lower sanctuary, where St. Francis is buried. The church is decorated with gorgeous geometric designs, frescoes painted in many colors, some with gold stars on a blue painted background. The best is to hire a private guide, and I recommend this, to understand the historical significance of this holy site, but I used my phone to get the right info.

This was truly a highlight! We somehow went when it was not crowded. We saw the crypt where St. Francis is buried. The lower portion of the basilica in many way is almost more beautiful that the upper portion. Both upper and lower have frescos by Giotto. Such an incredible experience!

Later the name was changed to Paradise Hill (after the canonization of St. Francis). Here is the tomb of St. Francis. When visiting the basilica, it is worth strolling the streets of Assisi. However, only 8 km away (approx. 20 minutes by car) there is another Basilica with an atmospheric, tiny church inside, rebuilt by St. Francis.

A historic and amazing basilica, obviously a must visit while you are in Assisi. Must visit both the Inferiore (lower) and Superiore (upper) basilica areas. The Inferiore piazza is quite large as captured in these pictures. The basilica superiore is so peaceful and serene, true to the nickname of Assisi, the city of peace, no wonder a UNESCO a World heritage site. If you have only a day to spend here, would recommend visiting the basilica in the evening hours, as you can make a the most the most out of it with the spectacular views during the sunset hours from up top of the whole area and the valley.

Arriving to Assisi in the night when everything is black and the basilica radiates the sky is majestic. Immediately I knew that I’d stay longer than 1 night and so I did, with 0 regrets. I made the journey up the hill twice during my late October stay; Once in the morning and once at night. At this time of year, you can easily have the grounds to yourself before 9am and after dark; just the occasional local walking their dog. The stillness is pure poetry. Just keep climbing higher…the views from the balcony will leave you stunned.

Beautiful sanctuary, it is really amazing to walk around and see how beautiful it is inside. It has high and lower levels. In the lower level, you can find the tomb of Saint Francis de Assisi. It was the most spiritual place I visited recently. There is also a shop downstairs you need to go straightforward up to the end of the high level then take the stairs to go down. To find the Basilica you have to walk 15 minutes but there are a lot of shops around and restaurants, a good tip is to go early in the morning to enjoy the place and walk through the medieval small roads. I think everyone knows of this place if they visit Umbria. It is very famous but is a bit outside Assisi I recommend having a car if you want to get here. They have mass on Sunday mornings but you can still enter to look around even during mass which was a bit weird but still worth a look.

Highly decorative inside and huge. A rose garden can also be seen from inside and there are gorgeous vaulted ceilings too along the corridors.

A very nice basilica in Assisi, probably often overlooked because people flock up to the hilltop to the town and the more famous basilica and other attractions. This is on the other side of the main train station of Assisi. It’s actually walkable distance from the train station. There is a nice museum, rose garden and gift shop in side as well. The piazza Della Porziuncola in front of the basilica is quite large and nice to walk around and take in the beauty of this place.

At the moment the outer church has scaffolding around much of the dome and inside as many repairs are taking place. However, you can still see the impressive art work and architecture. The small church is very special and still has the frescos inside. You can walk along a special bricked pathway from Assisi.

It's a beautiful basilica but it's going through a renovation/fixing era. Therefore you're not going to be able to fully enjoy the church with its paintings. However, you will have a special moment for prayer there and one relic from San Francisco. You'll also be able to witness the rose garden of San Francisco and the little cell in which he used to sleep about other little treasures like the gift shop.

A truly beautiful place to be. Occasionally it will get a bit noisy, but it calms down soon enough. If you go to Assisi, a beautiful sanctuary to go to is Eremo Della Carceri. You can walk the 4 km up hill, with spectacular views which takes between 1-1 1/2 hrs. There is a welcome cafe at the entrance 🙂. The caves here are where St Francis and his brothers lived and prayed and the monastery was built around them. The grounds on the mountainside are so peaceful to walk and pray in. The monastery has some small passages and narrow stairways, but this adds to the atmosphere. The monks there are very welcoming. Beautiful.

If you visit Assisi, the Eremo delle Carceri is the perfect destination to follow the footsteps of St Francesco. If you decide to walk up, it is a 4,1km, approx. 1,5 hours steep uphill rocky hike, but it is well worth it, as the scenery is breathtaking. The hermitage is just pure serenity, the perfect place to connect to St Francesco. You can feel all that he stood for. It is a truly sacred place.

One of the best Holy Place to pray, meditate and think in the whole world. Just get into those Holy Woods, sit, think and pray. You'll completely understand what I mean. The same air, trees, paths are filled with the Holiness of the Saints that lived there in the XIII century. You can't miss this place.

This is a place of quiet reflection. We walked from St. Rufinios in Assisi to here. 3 mi walk and 1,200 ft up. The gift shop has snacks and coffee bar. Beautiful landscape with birds singing everywhere. Paths were well maintained.

Ready to drive to with a small parking area and nearby WC. This is the site of the chapel first adopted and rebuilt by St. Francis. Later it was the convent of St. Clare, who lived and died here, and the Poor Sisters. You can reserve a tour time online via the Sanctuary's website. The tour is free and self guided. There are pamphlets in multiple languages with details about each stop on the tour, plus signage in Italian and English.

I really enjoyed going to this old fortress, going through the tunnel, climbing the towers, feeling the history, taking in the views. Absolutely magnificent! And there’s a pleasant cafe at the base.

I had climbed up before but had never gone inside until my last visit. Well worth the 10 euros. They have staged the inside so that you can have an idea of how it would be utilized. Lots of plaques that explain the history and uses. Spectacular views but no easy way to get there. Be ready for A LOT of stairs!

Climbed a hill to see the castle and laid down on the grass to look around the stunning view of Assissi. Highly recommend all of you to walk towards here as well.

Stunning place and a great chunk of history. Very well preserved, it's not a ruin but a proper fortress. Entrance is paid, but a nice surprise: payment by card is accepted. One thing to take into consideration: the castle is on the hill and the climb can be exhausting if the day is hot. The road is even and you don't need to hike through but still can be a challenge. Just beside the castle there is a bar with tables outside, a good spot to catch a breath after getting up the hill, there is also a loo available. Beautiful views from up there, I loved it.

This is something truly spectacular. We went there by foot via narrow streets of this beautiful old town, in a wonderful weather, and we enjoyed both the old historical buildings and unbelievably gorgeous views of the surrounding areas. It's one of the most beautiful old towns I've ever been! Definitely a must-visit location.

Beautiful attraction in Assisi. Its a bit of a climb but if you take the city tour bus then it saves time and effort. The city tour bus also includes the entry fee so its well worth it especially if you're short on time or tired in the heat.

Its not a big castle, no exhibitions inside but still, do recommend to visit while being in Assisi. Its only 10-15 mins walking distance from city center. Nice views on the city. Also you can find a Bar before the entrance. Ticket price: 6EUR

I loved this place and it’s attached museum! The museum ticket got you into the crypts under the cathedral, and then you take a stairwell up into the cathedral. You can see where they were baptized, an old Roman water storage area, etc. I highly recommend!

Exquisite church. This is where Sts Francis, Clare and Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows were baptised. The font still stands in the corner. We were blessed to have a nun show us around and had a peek in the sacristy, which is like a little chapel of its own, with altar and relics. Simply beautiful. The Assisi Cathedral is dedicated to San Rufino. Great exemple of Umbrian Romanesque style, this is the third church built on the same site containing San Rufino remains, a bishop martyred in the 3rd century.

Great relaxing place. So peaceful

The entrance to this walk is along one of the walls by the basilica maggiore. it is like stepping into another world! Allow a sudden,the crowds and noise surrounding the major attractions disappear, and you enter a world where you are more likely to hear birdsong. The trail goes downhill, quite steep in parts but mostly quite gently. There is a chapel and small info point at the bottom. If you want something to eat then time your walk so that you arrive at lunchtime. I was there at about 11am but the nearby osteria does not open until 12:00. As you might expect, the climb back up is more strenuous! However, the views both downhill and uphill are superb. Well worth the effort.

I'd been in Assissi many times but had never gotten around to seeing the bosco. It was a great experience! Lots of lovely nature and a very peaceful atmosphere. Totally recommend it.

Beautiful winery set up high from the valley with wonderful long views of the surrounding mountains! Maria and Laura enchanted us with tastings of their beautiful bio dynamic wines paired with delicious food and stories of their property. It was such a pleasure to spend the afternoon of our anniversary here!

So interesting to learn about the family business! The wine tasting was very well curated and the food pairings were perfect. Pleasant surprises. We spent a deliciously delightful two hours there.

Gaia came and picked us up from our meeting point on time. The vineyard and the olive orchard views are spectacular. Most importantly, the experience was fantastic, the food and wine delicious and it was the only wine that didn’t give my husband a headache after 30 years of not being able to drink wine. Our “winemaker for a day” experience at the Tili Winery in Assisi, Italy was truly amazing!!! Their knowledge and expertise was simply outstanding. It was so incredible to see their operation and dedication to the grape, if you will, as our guide explained things in as much detail as we could ask for. Truffle Hunt with Bio lunch (3 hours) was outstanding! From the actual hunt, tour of the small batch organic winery and lunch/tastings was so impressive. Gaia, our guide, was very friendly & informative! It was very convenient that they picked you up & delivered you back to the city gates so there was no need to arrange for a taxi. The wine, olive oil & balsamic vinegar tasting was delicious! The olive oil was so fresh & the homemade biscotti was a treat!

This tour was the highlight of our trip despite rain. Annalaura was incredible and her family operation was beyond impressive. We enjoyed amazing wines and local food while learning so much about the organic/natural wine making process. I’d recommend this experience to anyone.

When I booked this class, I didn’t realize it was private. The intimacy and undivided attention my husband and I received from Maria, the teacher, made the class very special. The class was very well organized and we learned a lot of good Italian cooking tips. I’m a home chef, and I found this class to be very enjoyable and think it would be perfect for any level of cooking experience. The food was so delicious - the wine equally as good. It was so fun to eat with Maria, her sous chef and her daughter, Annalaura. They all did anything and everything to ensure we had the best experience; which we did. Maria visits the USA in the winter and we invited her to stay with us - and we would be honored to host her in our home. She is a lovely woman; someone you want to share a meal and a bottle of wine (or 2) with!!

Absolutely adored this winery! I booked a tour through a third party site and although I was up-charged for not being with a partner-I understand logistically and economically but still feels weird to be penalized for being solo. Anyways, I took the train from Rome to Assissi and the daughter of the family who runs the winery, her car broke down, so we had to be flexible! So I explored Assissi before versus after the tour and went to the tour at 2 instead of 10:30! The atmosphere was very welcoming and everyone was so sweet! Especially the German Shepard named Loki lol. The wine tastings were great and I read on a review that it was a lot of alcohol so I made sure to take it easier and although I think it could have been very insulting to the winery for someone not to finish each tasting, I think they were very understanding in that I didn’t want to lose my composure as a woman traveling alone! I am gluten free and they were also able to accommodate that which I wasn’t expecting as I brought my own bread lol, I did see the couple next to me receive slightly different plates than mine but wasn’t for sure if they booked a different experience (they received cold cuts and I didn’t for example). The tour ended up feeling a tad bit rushed but I believe that if we didn’t have to reorganize it would have been the perfect pace! They were able to drop me off at bus stop directly as a trade off from pushing the tour back. I bought a bottle of balsamic vinegar and when I tell you I’m obsessed!! I’m putting it on everything! 1000% was my favorite tasting/product of this company! Also the sister was so nice and the person I had the most interaction with. Very inclusive and a thirst for expanding knowledge and connections which always makes for a better conversation! I would visit again in a heartbeat!!

My son and I visited this wonderful winery during the fall and experienced the lunch and wine tasting offering. Everything was wonderful and we ordered a case of wine/olive oil to have delivered at home... it has been enjoyed by everyone!

Went here with family. We got the pack with all the wines and lunch and it was absolutely delicious. They pair the wines with local foods that are amazing and the wines themselves are really good too. If you're a foodie, you'll definitely want to come here

Nice wine tasting and picnic (especially for the price). Staff speak fantastic English and are very friendly. We walked from Assisi train station - Google doesn't show the route, but you can see the roads on Maps. We did have to ford a small river which had appeared due to the intense rain (northern Italy had flooded the week before we visited), but that just added to the fun! Picnic was based in a sheltered veranda amidst the vines, which was nice, but we'd recommend the staff to provide blankets as an option to provide for a more personal picnic
