A couple years ago I visited and stayed on Sanday,
although, I found it difficult to find any prehistoric sites which is of archaeological interest to me. I could not find any road signposts, not even small ones. I found the local people helpful but still found it difficult to find site/s. I did find a lovely large beach.
I stayed a week at Braewick Bed and Breakfast, not far up from the ferry. Only £45 a night then! Now you may think the room would be of an inferior quality, the opposite I found;
the bedding was of a beautiful Egyptian cotton (so lovely). Very clean room. The modern en-suite room was scrupulously clean too - the shower had a good force to it, less time showering = less water used. Very nice toilet and wash basin. A very pleasant room. Very nice owners.
I had all my meals there - a full cooked breakfast, sorted me out until I returned early evening. At that time, a single evening (full) meal only cost £12. Two courses £15 and three courses £18. I ate two courses - steak pie and vegetables, desert: live natural yogurt with blueberries - I have a special diet. Coffee, I think, came with the meal. And I think I had a glass of red wine, (extra cost of course). The meal was with fresh vegetables, lovely homemade pie, very enjoyable, thank you.
At that time they had two lovely dogs, one a sweet puppy, they were not allowed in the dining room. And well behaved. I bought several unframed nature photographs which the owner took and a knitted hat which his wife, Sanday's isle's nurse, made. Such a very nice couple.
I am so sorry to say, the only problem I found was noise from the adjoining dining room, immediately, outside the three adjoining bedrooms. I could hear quite clearly doors opening and closing. Footfall. A gent snoring in the next room!
It did stop me from sleeping which is such a terrible shame when everything else was so very, very good. If some sound proofing was put in that would be great. Something to ease the sound of the doors closing - perhaps slow closing brackets. And the dining room fully carpeted. I really would love to come and stay, each year. I shall try a different room this year, 2023, as I was in the middle room, I do hope it's much quieter for sleeping and relaxation.
That is the reason I have not given this otherwise smashing B&B five stars.
