About
The mexican restaurant Criollo is a luxurious spot that serves up traditional cooking techniques from Oaxaca, influenced by the Zapotec region of Istmo de Tehuantepec. Creative dishes with local produce are a mainstay on their ever-changing menu, made by two chefs who own award-winning restaurant Pujol. Brunch is a popular option here, as is their coffee.Reviews
Criollo in Oaxaca offers a unique dining experience with its outdoor seating where guests can observe the staff preparing food, chickens roaming around, and meat cooking on the fire. The surprise tasting menu is a highlight for many visitors who enjoy the anticipation of each course. While some find the prices reasonable for what they receive, others feel it lacks transparency regarding costs. The ambiance, service, and presentation are praised by most reviewers, although opinions vary on whether the food justifies the price tag.
We almost didn’t go because of the negative reviews, but our hotel was around the corner and were able to pop in without a reservation for breakfast. The outdoor seating was really unique, you can observe the staff preparing food, chickens are running around, meat is on the fire. We didn’t have the tasting menu they’re known for but really happy to stop in to see the space! The food we did have was excellent. I have a hunch that others complaining about service need to lower their expectations. This isn’t New York City!
Lovely ambience, great service, beautiful presentations - yet the food itself is nothing special, and certainly very expensive. There are lots of other great places in Oaxaca, for more reasonable prices. Very poor value for money!
Went for a 9am Monday breakfast and it did not disappoint. Easy to book on open table but they had lots of space anyway so would’ve been fine without a reservation. Beautifully decorated place and a few hens and roosters which brought the ambience. Food was quick, latte coffee was great and nice service. Would recommend!!
Criollo is one of those special food experiences you have to try while in Oaxaca!
We had dinner reservations (recommended) and arrived to sit in a beautiful table in a garden. The menu included a 6 course meal but... It's a surprise! You don't know what's coming. We enjoyed every course and the anticipation of it.
They ask you if you have any allergies or don't eat something and that way they'll avoid serving you a surprise you wouldn't enjoy.
Highly recommend the food, service and decent prices for the amount of food! Take your time here 😋
This place was amazing and so was the service!!! Great food and definitely lives up to the hype. Super glad that we came. Definitely confused on the negative reviews. The price is really good for a tasting menu and for what you get. If you’re looking for a cheap meal don’t come here & then complain about the price 💁🏽♀️. But if you’re looking for a great experience and want to try one of the best spots in town then absolutely!!
