I have been to many popular zoos across different countries and there is something very interesting about this zoo which I rated 5-star. Perhaps the entrance and the overall layout of the zoo might not seem appealing but there are animals here that are worth seeing! Opened in 1967, the highlight of the zoo is the very adorable huge penguins. There were so many of them and it was such a great experience to be able to see them up close. There were other interesting animals in the zoo such as the seals, polar bear, the underwater hippopotamus, and many more! I strongly recommend paying a visit to this zoo despite some not-so-good reviews about the zoo.

Asahiyama Zoo is not merely a place to observe animals; it is a sanctuary of learning, entertainment, and appreciation for the natural world. Its combination of impeccable facilities, diverse exhibits, and charming inhabitants make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Hokkaido.

We were at Asahiyama Zoo in December 2019, just before COVID-19 hit. It was a magical place for me. I have been to many zoo's before but this place was my favourite. All the animals were amazing, and didn't give me the feeling that they were depressed or trapped. The day we went was a bit warm for the penguins so they couldnt be out to be closer to us. We would come back here one day with our young son.

One of the best zoos I've ever visited. We (2 adults) had a great time walking around the exhibits during January winter even though it was quite cold. Most of the exhibits had an indoor area which offered a brief respite from the cold. Parking was easy and the grounds staff maintained the pathways well. We went on a Monday morning and it was quiet with no wait to buy tickets. The zoo has some unique animals including polar bears, red pandas, snowy owl, arctic fox, snow leopard, lion cubs, wolves, reindeer, and our favourite, the Pallas' cat! We managed to see a few feeding times (signs with times at the exhibit) and without understanding Japanese they were still entertaining for us.

Not too bad for the price. Cute animals, family and children friendly place, there’s baby stroller and wheelchair free for use. I think would be nice for winter to watch the penguin walk. Don’t forget to have a soft serve there which has the butt of polar bear 🤭

Had such an amazing time exploring the Asahiyama Zoo. My wife and I decided to go on a Thursday to avoid the weekend crowds, which seemed to work out pretty well. We also ordered tickets online beforehand to avoid the hassle of the line when we arrived. We arrived by public transportation (40 min bus ride from the Asahikawa Station) and arrived 20 minutes before the zoo opened and there were already some people in line (around 20 people), so be sure to get there early. When the park opened at 9:30, some of the people were running to the different exhibits and we were confused why until we looked at the website. They have a feeding schedule for the different animals, so be sure to check that out before arriving so you can maximize your time and have an efficient route through the park. We ended up going back to some of the enclosures multiple times to see the feeding because we did not plan our route ahead of time (we didn’t mind though). In my opinion, the best feedings to check out were the penguins and the polar bears. We were able to get a spot near the front of the enclosure for the penguin feeding and got great pictures, but be sure to line up 15 mins early for the polar bear feeding, as the enclosure doesn’t have as open of a layout and people cram into the viewing area. It was amazing watching the polar bears jump off the rocks into the water to get the food. We also watched the red panda feeding which was a bit less exciting. The zoo keeper spread out apple slices throughout the enclosure and the red pandas had to work to get into some of the feeding balls to get the yummy reward. They were so adorable though, so we enjoyed that one a good bit too. Some of the enclosures really allow you to get up close to the animals without interfering with their daily activities and allow for some amazing camera angles. Overall we spent 4 hours in the zoo and we could have been there even longer. Definitely check this zoo out if you are in Hokkaido, it is worth the trip. Do note that there are a lot of tiny flies flying around in the air though and that seemed to bother a lot of people (we visited on November 2nd, might not be as many bugs during different times of the year).

It was a winter trip to the zoo, hoping to experience the Penguin walk but sadly the event was closed. But we did see the penguins up close and it goes the same for other animals. Please be prepared as they weather gets really cold. So gloves, heatpacks, scarfs/mufflers are a must!! Lots of snow and ice on the grounds so do walk slowly and when it got too cold, we escaped into any of the animal enclosures or washrooms for some warmth from heaters. Not all animals are out during winter but was enough to spend 2 - 3 hours just watching them and taking photos/video. Driving there was easy as there were signs leading to the zoo with traffic ushers for the parking. Tickets were easily bought at counter. Many vending machines with hot drinks/canned soups. There was also a cafe and restaurant. Gift shop sold cute items and biscuits/snacks with pretty zoo themed packaging. We enjoyed ourselves especially at the penguin and fierce animal enclosures. We are considering to return in spring or summer!

It is really worth to go there. The ticket is only 1000yen. And I had so many kind of animal and insects to see. Because the zoo located in Hokkaido there are some special animals which can survive in cold weather. 🦭🐻‍❄️🐺 Moreover what I was interested in was infos on board which was made by university students and zookeepers. Those info was really unique that only people who take face animals everyday can write and not only good things which media show but also sad things such as die. I couldn’t see people read the boards but I recommend you to read those boards it will bring you to understand about life deeply. Half of infos were translated in English.

One of the highlights of our trip! They have a few “up close and personal” displays where you get a really clear view of the animals. Polar bear exhibit and the penguin walk were some of our favorites. There were 3 adorable lion cubs when we visited in Dec 2022 too. There’s a huge variety of Hokkaido animals too - was nice watching them during the winter. Definitely worth a special trip here.

A well rated and educational zoo that is worth a visit. It has unique animals like red panda, polar bear, wolves (though we didn’t get to see it), fox , penguins etc. The zoo made an effort to write the stories/notes about the animals in english as well. Kids enjoyed their day in the zoo and able to see the animals up close. Able to cover it in less than half a day.

Though being not too big the zoo does provide interesting enclosures and how they display the animals for visitors. The penguin, seal & polar bear exhibits was memorable. The foods are reasonably priced and we’re happy to see that there are numerous animals for us to see.

The zoo is very well kept and maintained. They took care of the animals very well, you can see from the climbing facilities they have for the monkeys. All signs are hand drawn and handmade. Very cute and I am entertained just from all the amusing signs they put around the zoo. The animals have shining fur and very well fed. They certainly put their whole heart into this zoo. 💛

I've been to many zoos, and so far this is the best I've ever seen. Very well loved animals that have good enrichment, clean exhibits, and seem happy. Every animal we came across was active. The design and flow of the zoo is excellent, making it easy to navigate and reducing clusters so everyone can see. There are plenty of drink machines available in addition to the restaurants - all very reasonably priced. We spent 6 hours here and would have happily spent more were they not closing!

If I could give it a zero… I would. Not enough room for the animals in their enclosures. Polar bears looked stressed and only had a very small piece of land to walk backwards and forwards in. The brown bear was also in a tiny enclosure. Very sad and felt sick that I had paid to get in this jail cell for animals. The two hippos I saw had only concrete for their land. Their water was frozen over. The chimps were literally in a small room jail cell, looked sickening. I didn’t take photos because I felt sick at seeing this and didn’t stay long. The baby brown bear, stressed in the smallest concrete room I’ve seen for an animal. The giraffes were in a small outdoor enclosure shivering away as it’s snowing and I don’t think they are meant to be a snowy winter animal… (please educate me if I’m wrong). These animals may have been in a concert jail cell because of the winter weather maybe? I hope it’s not for long as that would be an incredibly sad life for them. Again, I didn’t take many photos because I felt terrible for being there and didn’t stay long. But.. at least the penguins and smaller animals seemed to be doing alright.

A small zoo with the penguin walk being a major highlight. If you take the bus from JR Station, recommend taking the 930 one or earlier cause the lines are so long waiting for the bus, you might not make it to the first bus if you are aiming for the 11am parade. Buy your ticket ahead of time in the building ! The returning bus is not as frequent. it is hard to get a view as people all start to line up for it. The zoo has some slippery areas and coin lockers.

The zoo is very cold in the morning, especially when you wait outside and line up for the opening. Highlight of the zoo is the popular penguin walk that happens at 11:30am and 2:00pm. Fun to watch the penguins as they walk. There are vending machines and cafes inside. If you smoke, there are designated smoking areas. Can be accessed by direct bus from Asahikawa station. Tickets can be bought same day before entering, 1000 yen for adults.

My family had limited time visiting the zoo. Arrived at around 1:30pm only had 2 hours to explore as the zoo closes at 3:30pm. It was worth it. Love the famous penguin walk. They are just adorable. Visiting during winter while it was snowing makes the scenery more special. The red panda is cute as well. Entry fee is reasonable. Adult 1000 yen. My kids 7 and 9 at the time were granted free admission.

If you're coming from a country without four seasons like me, this is the zoo that you must visit. I feel so good when visiting a zoo during winter, where everything is covered with white snow. The penguin walking show starts at 11 am sharp, with visitors queuing and standing on both sides of the walkway while the penguins walk down the middle of the corridor. The zoo premises are small, so you can finish your visit within 20-30 minutes. There are two restaurants in this zoo, and the shoyu ramen here is famous. The serving pace in the restaurant is fast.

I liked that the zoo had those special tube's where you can observe the animals better, but I don't think the cage are appropriate for the animals. They were really small and empty. There were 5 lions who had not much in their cage and only about 100 square meter. Many animals also were alone, at least outside, but during opening hours there also only is outside, because the animals have no shelter. I understand that this helps visitors to see all animals, but it's still not good and sad

My favorite zoo in the world! Penguin parade was the highlight. Standing in the freezing weather for 40 minutes was worth the effort. Seal gliding on the tube was a close and cute encounter. However, Polar bear was not in a good mood, annoyingly walking back and forth.

Tried 2 different ramen stall, taste were ok only, nothing special. The ramen stall in the AEON mall sells better ramen than what I had at the ramen village. If you are taking the train to come here, take note on the irregular schedule.

I ate at SANTOUKA it is widely present in a lot of Countries fascinating about this place is the Authentic taste I always Order the Shio (Salt) because it brings out the real goodness of the broth

8 ramen restaurant, pictures and prices up outside each place. It would have been good to distinguish each joint so they had their own reviews. Lots of places do half bowl ramen however prices were not far off a full bowl. The place we went into, I wouldn't recommend. The vegetable ramen had mince through it. My Asahikawa soy ramen just wasn't that great. We didn't finish our food, the cheese gyoza was really awful (mixed mince and some strange cheese, I thought it was cheese only). It was also quite expensive for the quality.

There are 8 ramen restaurants in this building complex. In order to let customers taste more than one ramen, the restaurants offer mini size (~ 3/4 or 1/2 of the normal portion) of their signature ramen. We tried 3 ramen restaurants at one go. They all at quite high quality.

I tried Ramen outside home for the first time. Though I prefer the home Ramen, I also liked this one

really underwhelming, but it may be because we went on a weekend so a lot of the places were closed.

Fun little ramen place but you can also get similar ones in town. A good trip if you went to the sake museum before (or after) as it’s in the same part of town. The ramen wasn’t particularly better or more unique to others you can find close to the station.

It was a nice experience and I was really full after trying 3 shops of ramen. However, I think is better to only try these two 青叶 and 梅光轩(rated as one Michelin star). Personally I don’t really like the shoyu based ramen but it is a must to try for tourist.

Too many tourists, including us. We decided to go to the one without waiting lines outside. But, the line quickly formed right after we were seated. Ramens were good, but they were too salty for my kid. I wonder if this was a common trouble to others with kids.

Went after 5pm and it is already closed. Hence we ate at one of the Ramen restaurants. Ensure you got cash as card is not accepted. Ramen was interestingly savoury and the soup base was aromatic. Also ordered Gyoza which was not fantastic just normal. This is all based on foreigner perspective

One tummy one meal. Only managed to try one Ramen shop there. That shop is meant to be highest google review ratings based on restaurants in the village. Abit of research indicated that Asahikawa is famous for their shoyu based broth. Disappointingly, the ramen taste was abit underwhelming. A well known place with a name called Ramen village should have ramen with exceptionally standing out characteristics and quality. I found the ramen pretty standard.

In Ramen Village, numerous ramen restaurants beckon, but during lunch, most were fully occupied. Fortunately, we secured a table at one of them. The taste was average, not compelling enough to justify a journey solely for ramen.

Come to this place to get a collection of stores serving ramen. Must try the signature soy sauce based broth ramen.

Love the atmosphere here and the food was alright. I actually prefer their gyoza to ramen.

We tried the Santouka Ramen there. The taste is the same as the main shop. It's a must try ramen shop there in my opinion. Especially the toroniku ramen.

Baihohken outlet in Singapore has closed down. Santouka still around. However, most ramen served in this mura are too salty & oily for me.

4 stars for value. It is a humble down market place but clean and decent. I like the free drinks (coffee, soup, soda, etc) service and the bread breakfast was simple but nice enough. Location is very convenient.

When i saw the comment on google map, i have already booked the hotel. The electricity will break down if you use 3 types of electric appliances including air-con, tv and hair dryer. the room charges ~hkd640 includ. tax but not worth. The room is on 3rd floor and the street light is just near your window. Even you can touch the street light if your arms are long enough. quite disturbing at night.

Sure it’s pretty with various flowers and decorations, but it’s not ¥1,000 for me. I’d recommend other options if you’re not that serious for this garden. Flower map at the entrance is helpful but I wish that they have at least names next to each flower in the garden.

Need to pay entrance fee and they provide a game for kids to busy themselves in the garden. Big place to walk around and enjoy the flowers and scenery. Kids get to pick a toy once they complete the game. There is a cafe with yummy food and drinks.

Magical garden that was just as impressive as the flower fields in the region. There are these cute little chicken residents as well. Kids enjoy the game to find all the gnomes in the garden as well and get a prize for trying.

Once you go there search for the magical door, go through it and then go up hill(not down) ,many beautiful things will start to happen in ur life.. aside from magic this place is really beautiful

We visited on 19th June. Established in 1906. The garden is well maintained and absolutely gorgeous with many flowers blooming. A heaven for Macro photo taking. Its known as the Gnome's garden also as the kids can run about the garden finding and counting how many gnomes are there and they all get a small prize at the end. We saw 15 gnomes and our friends found 17. They refuse to reveal how many gnomes are there in total understandably to keep the game in suspense. Allow 1 hour at least for this fairytale land as other reviewers mentioned.

Lovely flower garden, should make a visit if flowers and plants are your thing. Lots of flowers, although not everything was in full bloom, went there early July. There's also a cafe and dessert shop inside. The area is quite big, can spend a couple of hours and take some lovely photographs. Only issue was getting there from Asahikawa station, the bus service is only in the morning and early afternoon if not mistaken. We arrived at the station at around 3pm. Had to take a train to Sakuraoka station and walk about 15 minutes to the farm.

Do yourself a favour and visit this place if you're in the area. A gorgeous and enchanting garden. It was a beautiful place to walk around and is really well designed. The Cafe at the front has a nice selection of healthy food and drinks too. I recommend the assortment of Hokkaido potato varieties. Yum!

Visited in May 2018. Entrance fee of 800 yen per pax, and you can spend 1-2 hours at the garden. Plenty of flowers around which differ based on the season. Went there by taking JR to Sakuraoka station and walked around 1.5km (15mins). It would be more convenient if you plan to drive there. There is also a small cafe at the garden but there is limited variety in the food menu. You can get small souvenirs at the gift shop as well.

Entrance fee of ¥800 too high for a small garden. The vanilla ice cream is fantastic. Some lovely flowers available. Visited 7 June.

The ticket for one adult is 700 yens. In my opinion, it's not worth it. There isn't too much to see. Yes, it's pretty and has some cool ice inside, but that's it, there isn't too much else to see. A shop, an event room, a video library, which is everything in Japanese. It has a restaurant inside, but you can access to it from outside the museum. The money doesn't worth the visit.

Exquisite place with elegant snow design everywhere and stunning halls! There are only some designated rooms so to be honest it's all more like a feast to eyes than an interesting experience. And despite the map it's still hard to make the way since all rooms are connected and there are two floors, making it harder to find directions. The restaurant only offers like 5 lunch sets but it's well-prepared and worthy, about ¥1200-1500 for a lunch set with a main dish, salad/bread, soup and dessert, or ¥500-800 for dessert only. Even the dishes are inspired by the signature snow design!

Best if you could understand Japanese. Entrance fee: ¥700 for adults (¥650 if you log on to their website and find the discount coupon) ¥500 for University Students (student card is required) ¥550? A little cheaper for high school students or below. There’s a bridal service too. And if you’re a cosplayer, it would be suitable for photoshoot.

I'd call it more of an event hall, with a small element of "museum". There's plaques in Japanese, English, and Chinese, so you can learn all about the formation, crystallization, and science of snowflakes in three languages. If you like sparkly things, there's plenty of that to entertain the eyes. If you're also the sort who likes to get dressed up like a pretty princess, they also have a photo package and rental service. Just call ahead to make a reservation though.

A romantic scenic spot. The 'museum' displays quite a number of 'snow'-like exhibits. With the crystal lamps, this place is decorated as a castle in Frozen. There is also a hall for wedding or music performance, with more than 140 seats. The time spent in this place is around 30 to at most 45 minutes.

Not worh to come here unless you really have no where to go or you really want to know a little bit more about snow

I was amazed that there was much to see on the outside then inside. Inside the factory was quite small and there are only some exhibition on the 2nd and 3rd floor, which took only about 30 minutes to go through even if you watch the whole introduction video. The sake-making process in the factory on the 1st floor can be seen through the glass on the upper floors, although the view is quite limited. The 1st floor is dedicated to sake and souvenirs shopping only. But the natural scenery in front of the factory was indeed a sight that's a feast to the eyes! A large pond filled with koi fish and many kinds of flowers, not to mention the great woodwork ~

Very small museum to quickly visit. Just go up the stairs and follow the signs, this is completely self guided. Some of the sake is free to taste (limited to three tasters) and you can pay 100 yen for tasting the more premium stuff. Not exactly easy to get to as public transport is lack lustre, you can get a taxi from the train station, and for the return trip, staff can call another one for you

Worth a stop if you are in Asahikawa. Theo informational video on the 3rd floor can be seen in 5 languages including English. They have a great explanation and really kind staff willing to help. You can taste 6 of their sakes for free and 3 for a 100 yen payment. The payment ones are their star sakes. I recommend not coming by car unless you have someone who does not drink per definition as you may not drink and drive in japan even for 1 taster. The museum is free entry and you can see into their factory through windows. Best time to visit is November to March when they are actually brewing the sake. The mountain source water as other reviews mention is indeed very yummy. It seems locals even bring a lot of large water bottles to fill at the factory for free

Coming in with an extremely limited knowledge of sake, I was truly blown away by the amount of care and labor goes into making otokoyama sake. We came late so there wasn’t anyone on the factory floor but the educational video on the 3rd floor was very helpful in our understanding You get free samples of the sake too on the first floor. The junmai daiginjo (green bottle with black label & gold words) was a must try for me - this one is not free but sample costs only ¥100

Various sake with detail history of it in 2nd & 3rd floor. You can get three times of sake tasting at 1st floor. There are small or medium size of sake in bottlea for you to buy. Tax free condition applied.

Great for sake lovers. 2nd and 3rd floors are museum occupied. Education on the history and the sake making process. I couldn’t resist and snapped up 4 bottle of sake. I went straight for the recommendations from the shop assistant. 3 bottles are unique specific to the shop (those you can only buy there). 1 bottle of good premium sake. If you are overseas from Australia like me, you will appreciate the much lower pricing of the sake you can get here. Interestingly, they have vending machines that allow you to try sake - 100 yen per cup. My kids had great fun sledge sliding down the snow slope outside the shop. Much of the dioramas are in Japanese, but there is an English video showing the product of sake. The brewery is still in operation, and there is a generous free tasting. Worth a quick 1hr pit stop on your journey - for kids and fun loving adults there’s a small sledding hill and a bridge for photo opportunities.

Home of prize winning sake! Excellent trip if you're in asahikawa. The museum is located in a brewery (2F-3F) which can be seen in action in season. There's also a small exhibition on their prizes and an excellent informative movie (multilingual) about the process of brewing sake. On 1F there's an option for tasting some of the sakes. You get 3 free tasters when visiting, the top of the line, prize winning sakes are available for taste at 100 yen each (HIGHLY RECOMMEND). afterwards you can buy the bottles you like (tax free available) staff was attentive and helpful in making a choice. Must see if you are even remotely into sake!

Very interesting museum featuring sake brewing. The museum has two floors taking you through the history of sake brewing and the brewing process. At the gift shop there are a lot of interesting items and delicacies as well as different kinds of sake for purchase. The outdoors displays are very pretty to look at during winter.

The brewery is interesting. At the top floor they have a video in various languages to explain the brewing process. My favourites however are the sake tasting and the water collection. The sake tasting is split into 2. Free and paid. For the free one, there are 6 different sakes to taste, but you're only given enough tokens to taste 3. My advice is to come with someone else so that you have 6 tokens and can sample all 6. The paid one is a 100 yen per taste and there are 3. The paid ones are tasting their award winning sakes. For the water collection, outside the brewery there is a water collection point to collect and drink the water from the mountains that they use to brew the sake with. Many locals come by with big bottles to collect the water so its definitely a hit with locals

Otokoyama is one of my favourite Sake. I wish I could buy more to bring it home. The water that they use to produce Sake tastes just like the gift from God. It smells like flower and very refreshing. They have a few taps in front of the building which everyone can fill up in bottles.

Visited on a Monday afternoon 3:30pm. Met 2 tour groups arriving at the same time. On the 1st level, there is free basic sake tasting (max 3 per pax) and a 100 yen per cup tasting for their award winning sake. The 2nd floor is a small area to view sake making and on the 3rd floor there is a video machine with English/Chinese/korean audio for history guide! Outside the brewery, there is a tap that everyone can use for free (max 20L per pax). It is the distilled water that they used for Sake making.
