How long is the drive from Asahikawa to Wakkanai?
The direct drive from Asahikawa to Wakkanai is 152 mi (245 km), and should have a drive time of 3 hrs 6 mins in normal traffic.
If you’re going on a road trip from Asahikawa to Wakkanai, we did the research for you and compiled some great stops along the way — with top places to visit like Hokkaido Ice Pavilion and Asahiyama Zoo, or the ever-popular Daisetsu Mori-no Garden.
The top stops along the way from Asahikawa to Wakkanai (with short detours) are Asahiyama Zoo, Asahikawa Ramen Village, and Otatomari numa Swamp. Other popular stops include Hotel Tetora Asahikawa Station, Daisetsu Mori-no Garden, and Michi-no-Eki Riceland Fukagawa (Roadside Rest Area).
Daisetsu Mori-no Garden offers themed areas set in a lush forest environment, featuring vibrant seasonal blooms and alpine plants. Visitors can also explore a sensory garden designed to engage all the senses. Even in mid-August, the garden remains abundant with lovely flowers that add to the already amazing views. After exploring the gardens, visitors can stop by the on-site café to indulge in delicious sake-less ice cream.
visited in the middle of Aug and there were still enough lovely flower. The view from the garden was amazing. After vising the garden went to the cafe and tried sake less ice cream that was tasty!!

My opinion, the fee is too high for a small flower garden and hotel/cabins grounds - 800 yen for gardens and 1300 yen if u also buy a combined ticket to see Ueno farm (1 hour away). The garden is 1 hour drive from Asahikawa. Beautiful settings and views of mountains. Can stay there in great cabin hotel room type of accomodation. But the flower garden is tiny...and you can see the varieties of plants anywhere else. The rest of the grounds as the hotel guests facilities which you can wonder around but that's it...can sit at a fire pit for a while as an example but you didnt travel or pay a fee tp do that but for a garden. In general its pretty if you are into flowers and nature and there is almost no one...so up to you how much you are willing to pay

All you can eat BBQ with limited selection of meat but enough for dinner if you are not too picky.
Waitress showed us a card with Chinese translation for the menu, but there were 3 more kinds of meat which were not included in the card that she showed us. So we never knew there were more choices for us until we realized other table had other kind of meat that were not included in the card. I think this is not right and I believed it was not a mistake in forgetting to include those items inside the Chinese menu (I also checked the English menu and it was the same).
Overall the rest of the meat we ordered and free drinks was already good for the price. Paid only 3500 yen for 90 min., so no complaint.
I hope they can correct other languages' menu so it will be fair for other foreigners who come to dine there.
Their service is very good too.

The Hokkaido Ice Pavilion is a popular tourist spot that features an abundance of icicles, walls and pillars forming record-breaking cold conditions of -41C in a safe environment. The pavilion offers visitors the unique opportunity to test their tolerance for extreme coldness through seven activities such as ice towel sword, diamond dust and sliding down ice slides. However, guests should be aware that there is an additional cost of Y200 for 10 seconds on the slide.

It was definitely a fun experience! Went during near winter season. There are many pretty tunnels in the pavilion, which was broken into different sections for phototaking. I like how they manage to build a small place to let you see diamond dust formation as well. Furthermore, they had actually built a slide for adults & kids to play when you exited the pavilion. Overall, I love it. I would recommend anyone to try. Is a kids friendly place too!

The interior of the facility is constructed to give the impression of being entirely frozen.
You can see numerous ice pillars and large icicles.
It's interesting to swing a wet towel in the air, as it freezes into a stick-like shape.
There's also an attraction where you can use a sled to slide down an ice slide.
Overall, it's a facility with a nostalgic atmosphere.
In Japan, there was an era called the Showa period, and this facility evokes impressions from that time.
Parking is available."

Friendly staffs who greet tourists. A chance to experience the coldness between minus 20 to minus 41 degrees. Thick clothings are provided for warmth. Nothing much to see inside actually but just for the cold experience. Love the artsy restrooms beside the cafe. After the coldness, enjoying a cup of hot tea feels nice

Was a fun experience. Took around an hour to cover everything. All staff are very friendly.
1000 yen for a ticket. +200 yen for the ice slide. +100 yen to feed the goats.

We started with activity colouring some pictures before entering the exhibits. The colour vanished under heating and it returned when we got into the ice room. We received a towel which turns hard after some time when we are inside the pavilion. The -40degree room wasn't that appealing probably because we are all geared up as it was winter time when we visit. The rest area which is supposed to allow those who feel cold to get some warm don't seems to be effective. There is a free cup of hot tea for everyone after we finished our tour. Overall, place was quite small for the price but assume the maintenance cost is high. Activities were interesting.

Unique experience to have test out one's tolerance to extreme coldness of -41°C in a safe environment.
There are about 7 activities - Ice towels sword, diamond dust and sliding down ice slides.
We are surprised that the slides will cost addition Y200 for 10secs.
Allow 35mins for this activity

The path towards this place is a dirt road, just follow Google maps and you should be able to reach it in about 20mins of walking, from kamikawa station
There you get to experience what Hokkaido on winter feels like, treehouses , a free bear enclosure , a traditional ainu hut and some gardens

The zoo is a popular tourist destination in Asahikawa, Hokkaido due to its large variety of animals, including polar bears and penguins.
Best zoo visit ever for my family. It's beautiful in snow & the highlight was definitely the penguin walk.
Do not miss if you visit Asahikawa.

I have been to many popular zoos across different countries and there is something very interesting about this zoo which I rated 5-star. Perhaps the entrance and the overall layout of the zoo might not seem appealing but there are animals here that are worth seeing!
Opened in 1967, the highlight of the zoo is the very adorable huge penguins. There were so many of them and it was such a great experience to be able to see them up close. There were other interesting animals in the zoo such as the seals, polar bear, the underwater hippopotamus, and many more!
I strongly recommend paying a visit to this zoo despite some not-so-good reviews about the zoo.

2023.8.19 (Sat) Parked at the West Gate 500 yen parking lot. The main polar bears are close. I entered at the same time as the opening on Saturday, so I was able to see the polar bears, seals, and penguins at a time when they were not hungry. It got crowded after 10:00. The polar bear mumbling time was 15 minutes before the start, but I thought it would be easier, but the deadline was 15 minutes before. It would have been better to line up 30 minutes before. I slipped in. Also, even from outside, it seemed like I could see Mogu Mogu Time, so there was a lot of cheering.
Souvenirs, the items sold are quite different at each store, so if you find a souvenir you like, it would be better to buy it there. Is there a difference in management? Please note that there are shops that can be used with discount coupons for souvenirs and shops that cannot be used.
There are many height differences and stairs, and the child was tired because I went on a hot day.

Asahiyama Zoo in Hokkaido is undoubtedly a standout among zoological parks. Its reputation precedes it, celebrated for its vast expanse and unwavering commitment to cleanliness. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a plethora of well-fed animals, their care evident in their vibrant health and contentment.
Having had the pleasure of visiting twice with my family, I can attest to the zoo's ability to captivate visitors time and time again. Each visit unveils new insights and experiences, making it a truly enriching outing for all ages.
Among the myriad attractions, the penguin march and the polar bear museum stand out as crowd favorites, offering delightful spectacles and educational opportunities. However, amidst all the wonders, my heart remains with the endearing red pandas, their playful antics never failing to bring joy to my visits.
Asahiyama Zoo is not merely a place to observe animals; it is a sanctuary of learning, entertainment, and appreciation for the natural world. Its combination of impeccable facilities, diverse exhibits, and charming inhabitants make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Hokkaido.

We were at Asahiyama Zoo in December 2019, just before COVID-19 hit. It was a magical place for me. I have been to many zoo's before but this place was my favourite. All the animals were amazing, and didn't give me the feeling that they were depressed or trapped. The day we went was a bit warm for the penguins so they couldnt be out to be closer to us. We would come back here one day with our young son.

One of the best zoos I've ever visited. We (2 adults) had a great time walking around the exhibits during January winter even though it was quite cold. Most of the exhibits had an indoor area which offered a brief respite from the cold. Parking was easy and the grounds staff maintained the pathways well. We went on a Monday morning and it was quiet with no wait to buy tickets.
The zoo has some unique animals including polar bears, red pandas, snowy owl, arctic fox, snow leopard, lion cubs, wolves, reindeer, and our favourite, the Pallas' cat! We managed to see a few feeding times (signs with times at the exhibit) and without understanding Japanese they were still entertaining for us.

Not too bad for the price. Cute animals, family and children friendly place, there’s baby stroller and wheelchair free for use. I think would be nice for winter to watch the penguin walk.
Don’t forget to have a soft serve there which has the butt of polar bear 🤭

This was my 5th visit, but the temperature in Asahikawa was over 35 degrees, so I was really tired this time. The animals are exhausted, probably because of the heat. Maybe it's just my imagination, but I feel like the number of cages with nothing on display has increased. However, it does not change much that it is a zoo where you can see the original movement of animals. Facilities where you can eat in the park are cheap and there are many delicious meals, so we recommend eating inside the park.

Had such an amazing time exploring the Asahiyama Zoo. My wife and I decided to go on a Thursday to avoid the weekend crowds, which seemed to work out pretty well. We also ordered tickets online beforehand to avoid the hassle of the line when we arrived. We arrived by public transportation (40 min bus ride from the Asahikawa Station) and arrived 20 minutes before the zoo opened and there were already some people in line (around 20 people), so be sure to get there early. When the park opened at 9:30, some of the people were running to the different exhibits and we were confused why until we looked at the website. They have a feeding schedule for the different animals, so be sure to check that out before arriving so you can maximize your time and have an efficient route through the park. We ended up going back to some of the enclosures multiple times to see the feeding because we did not plan our route ahead of time (we didn’t mind though). In my opinion, the best feedings to check out were the penguins and the polar bears. We were able to get a spot near the front of the enclosure for the penguin feeding and got great pictures, but be sure to line up 15 mins early for the polar bear feeding, as the enclosure doesn’t have as open of a layout and people cram into the viewing area. It was amazing watching the polar bears jump off the rocks into the water to get the food. We also watched the red panda feeding which was a bit less exciting. The zoo keeper spread out apple slices throughout the enclosure and the red pandas had to work to get into some of the feeding balls to get the yummy reward. They were so adorable though, so we enjoyed that one a good bit too. Some of the enclosures really allow you to get up close to the animals without interfering with their daily activities and allow for some amazing camera angles. Overall we spent 4 hours in the zoo and we could have been there even longer. Definitely check this zoo out if you are in Hokkaido, it is worth the trip. Do note that there are a lot of tiny flies flying around in the air though and that seemed to bother a lot of people (we visited on November 2nd, might not be as many bugs during different times of the year).

It was a winter trip to the zoo, hoping to experience the Penguin walk but sadly the event was closed. But we did see the penguins up close and it goes the same for other animals.
Please be prepared as they weather gets really cold. So gloves, heatpacks, scarfs/mufflers are a must!! Lots of snow and ice on the grounds so do walk slowly and when it got too cold, we escaped into any of the animal enclosures or washrooms for some warmth from heaters.
Not all animals are out during winter but was enough to spend 2 - 3 hours just watching them and taking photos/video.
Driving there was easy as there were signs leading to the zoo with traffic ushers for the parking. Tickets were easily bought at counter. Many vending machines with hot drinks/canned soups. There was also a cafe and restaurant. Gift shop sold cute items and biscuits/snacks with pretty zoo themed packaging.
We enjoyed ourselves especially at the penguin and fierce animal enclosures. We are considering to return in spring or summer!

It is really worth to go there. The ticket is only 1000yen. And I had so many kind of animal and insects to see. Because the zoo located in Hokkaido there are some special animals which can survive in cold weather. 🦭🐻❄️🐺
Moreover what I was interested in was infos on board which was made by university students and zookeepers. Those info was really unique that only people who take face animals everyday can write and not only good things which media show but also sad things such as die.
I couldn’t see people read the boards but I recommend you to read those boards it will bring you to understand about life deeply. Half of infos were translated in English.

One of the highlights of our trip! They have a few “up close and personal” displays where you get a really clear view of the animals. Polar bear exhibit and the penguin walk were some of our favorites. There were 3 adorable lion cubs when we visited in Dec 2022 too. There’s a huge variety of Hokkaido animals too - was nice watching them during the winter. Definitely worth a special trip here.

A well rated and educational zoo that is worth a visit. It has unique animals like red panda, polar bear, wolves (though we didn’t get to see it), fox , penguins etc. The zoo made an effort to write the stories/notes about the animals in english as well.
Kids enjoyed their day in the zoo and able to see the animals up close. Able to cover it in less than half a day.

Though being not too big the zoo does provide interesting enclosures and how they display the animals for visitors. The penguin, seal & polar bear exhibits was memorable.
The foods are reasonably priced and we’re happy to see that there are numerous animals for us to see.

It was the Asahiyama Zoo after a long time after the end of Corona. I entered the zoo at night around 6:00. I was able to enter smoothly and it was still bright, so I was able to see a lot of animals and had a very cute and fun time. Nice park/ zoo with plenty of things for everyone to enjoy.
Variety of animals to see, things for the kids to enjoy, and plenty of food/ refreshment places to recharge and treat yourself to.😋
Easy getting to this place by car and parking (opposite to the zoo entrance, which is quite large) is free.
Reasonably priced to enter (sorry, I can't remember but it was reasonable)

The zoo is very well kept and maintained. They took care of the animals very well, you can see from the climbing facilities they have for the monkeys.
All signs are hand drawn and handmade. Very cute and I am entertained just from all the amusing signs they put around the zoo. The animals have shining fur and very well fed.
They certainly put their whole heart into this zoo. 💛

I've been to many zoos, and so far this is the best I've ever seen. Very well loved animals that have good enrichment, clean exhibits, and seem happy. Every animal we came across was active. The design and flow of the zoo is excellent, making it easy to navigate and reducing clusters so everyone can see. There are plenty of drink machines available in addition to the restaurants - all very reasonably priced. We spent 6 hours here and would have happily spent more were they not closing!

If I could give it a zero… I would.
Not enough room for the animals in their enclosures. Polar bears looked stressed and only had a very small piece of land to walk backwards and forwards in.
The brown bear was also in a tiny enclosure. Very sad and felt sick that I had paid to get in this jail cell for animals.
The two hippos I saw had only concrete for their land. Their water was frozen over.
The chimps were literally in a small room jail cell, looked sickening. I didn’t take photos because I felt sick at seeing this and didn’t stay long.
The baby brown bear, stressed in the smallest concrete room I’ve seen for an animal.
The giraffes were in a small outdoor enclosure shivering away as it’s snowing and I don’t think they are meant to be a snowy winter animal… (please educate me if I’m wrong).
These animals may have been in a concert jail cell because of the winter weather maybe? I hope it’s not for long as that would be an incredibly sad life for them.
Again, I didn’t take many photos because I felt terrible for being there and didn’t stay long.
But.. at least the penguins and smaller animals seemed to be doing alright.

A small zoo with the penguin walk being a major highlight. If you take the bus from JR Station, recommend taking the 930 one or earlier cause the lines are so long waiting for the bus, you might not make it to the first bus if you are aiming for the 11am parade. Buy your ticket ahead of time in the building ! The returning bus is not as frequent.
it is hard to get a view as people all start to line up for it.
The zoo has some slippery areas and coin lockers.

The zoo is very cold in the morning, especially when you wait outside and line up for the opening. Highlight of the zoo is the popular penguin walk that happens at 11:30am and 2:00pm. Fun to watch the penguins as they walk. There are vending machines and cafes inside. If you smoke, there are designated smoking areas. Can be accessed by direct bus from Asahikawa station. Tickets can be bought same day before entering, 1000 yen for adults.

My family had limited time visiting the zoo.
Arrived at around 1:30pm only had 2 hours to explore as the zoo closes at 3:30pm.
It was worth it. Love the famous penguin walk. They are just adorable.
Visiting during winter while it was snowing makes the scenery more special.
The red panda is cute as well.
Entry fee is reasonable. Adult 1000 yen. My kids 7 and 9 at the time were granted free admission.

If you're coming from a country without four seasons like me, this is the zoo that you must visit. I feel so good when visiting a zoo during winter, where everything is covered with white snow.
The penguin walking show starts at 11 am sharp, with visitors queuing and standing on both sides of the walkway while the penguins walk down the middle of the corridor. The zoo premises are small, so you can finish your visit within 20-30 minutes.
There are two restaurants in this zoo, and the shoyu ramen here is famous. The serving pace in the restaurant is fast.
Coby Khor — Google review
I liked that the zoo had those special tube's where you can observe the animals better, but I don't think the cage are appropriate for the animals. They were really small and empty. There were 5 lions who had not much in their cage and only about 100 square meter.
Many animals also were alone, at least outside, but during opening hours there also only is outside, because the animals have no shelter.
I understand that this helps visitors to see all animals, but it's still not good and sad
Sajina — Google review
My favorite zoo in the world! Penguin parade was the highlight. Standing in the freezing weather for 40 minutes was worth the effort.
Seal gliding on the tube was a close and cute encounter. However, Polar bear was not in a good mood, annoyingly walking back and forth.

Ueno Farm is a family-owned garden situated in Ueno Park, Tokyo. The garden features an English style garden of perennials that thrive in the region's warm climate. The gardens include ponds and cobbled paths and are a perfect place to take a break from the city. In addition to flowers, Ueno Farm also operates a cafe that serves breakfast and lunch options.
Lovely charming place to visit if you're in the area. A nice little stroll through the gardens, trying to see how many gnomes you can find and also enjoy the many varieties of flora available.
The view from the rainbow chair and the sky swing is breathtaking. Though, when we went, we had an overcast, we were still lucky enough to enjoy the view and experienced a bit of the sunset as the clouds were clearing up.

We visited on 19th June. Established in 1906. The garden is well maintained and absolutely gorgeous with many flowers blooming.
A heaven for Macro photo taking.
Its known as the Gnome's garden also as the kids can run about the garden finding and counting how many gnomes are there and they all get a small prize at the end.
We saw 15 gnomes and our friends found 17.
They refuse to reveal how many gnomes are there in total understandably to keep the game in suspense.
Allow 1 hour at least for this fairytale land as other reviewers mentioned.

Lovely flower garden, should make a visit if flowers and plants are your thing. Lots of flowers, although not everything was in full bloom, went there early July. There's also a cafe and dessert shop inside. The area is quite big, can spend a couple of hours and take some lovely photographs. Only issue was getting there from Asahikawa station, the bus service is only in the morning and early afternoon if not mistaken. We arrived at the station at around 3pm. Had to take a train to Sakuraoka station and walk about 15 minutes to the farm.

Asahikawa Ramen Village is a popular ramen restaurant with locations throughout the city. The restaurants specializes in shoyu soy sauce broth and thin, wavy noodles. There's even a location inside Asahikawa Station.
This place has a collection of ramen places, each with a different speciality. We tried a traditional ramen and also one with a silky fowl base. Some places offer half bowls so you can try a few bowls at different shops.

8 ramen restaurant, pictures and prices up outside each place. It would have been good to distinguish each joint so they had their own reviews. Lots of places do half bowl ramen however prices were not far off a full bowl. The place we went into, I wouldn't recommend. The vegetable ramen had mince through it. My Asahikawa soy ramen just wasn't that great. We didn't finish our food, the cheese gyoza was really awful (mixed mince and some strange cheese, I thought it was cheese only). It was also quite expensive for the quality.

There are 8 ramen restaurants in this building complex. In order to let customers taste more than one ramen, the restaurants offer mini size (~ 3/4 or 1/2 of the normal portion) of their signature ramen. We tried 3 ramen restaurants at one go. They all at quite high quality.

One tummy one meal. Only managed to try one Ramen shop there.
That shop is meant to be highest google review ratings based on restaurants in the village.
Abit of research indicated that Asahikawa is famous for their shoyu based broth.
Disappointingly, the ramen taste was abit underwhelming. A well known place with a name called Ramen village should have ramen with exceptionally standing out characteristics and quality. I found the ramen pretty standard.

The Hotel Tetora Asahikawa Station is a down-to-earth hotel that is located in the heart of Asahikawa. It offers rooms with flat-screen TVs and minifridges, making it an ideal spot for travellers looking to stay in the area. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and guests can take advantage of free Wi-Fi throughout their stay.
Cozy places but just next to station. Aeon mall is 10 minutes walk only. Market is just next.

4 stars for value.
It is a humble down market place but clean and decent.
I like the free drinks (coffee, soup, soda, etc) service and the bread breakfast was simple but nice enough.
Location is very convenient.

When i saw the comment on google map, i have already booked the hotel. The electricity will break down if you use 3 types of electric appliances including air-con, tv and hair dryer. the room charges ~hkd640 includ. tax but not worth. The room is on 3rd floor and the street light is just near your window. Even you can touch the street light if your arms are long enough. quite disturbing at night.

A museum devoted to snowflakes is located in the city of Asahikawa, in Japan. The museum features displays of beautiful ice crystals, as well as a music hall themed around snow flakes. The venue is quite small, but its unique design and atmosphere make it an attractive tourist destination.
Great place to visit with pretty frosted glass designs. Very photogenic place and romantic for couples. Family with children will be able to link it to fairy tale castles.
Wee Choeng Chong — Google review
The ticket for one adult is 700 yens. In my opinion, it's not worth it. There isn't too much to see. Yes, it's pretty and has some cool ice inside, but that's it, there isn't too much else to see. A shop, an event room, a video library, which is everything in Japanese.
It has a restaurant inside, but you can access to it from outside the museum. The money doesn't worth the visit.
Mariano Matayoshi — Google review
Exquisite place with elegant snow design everywhere and stunning halls! There are only some designated rooms so to be honest it's all more like a feast to eyes than an interesting experience. And despite the map it's still hard to make the way since all rooms are connected and there are two floors, making it harder to find directions. The restaurant only offers like 5 lunch sets but it's well-prepared and worthy, about ¥1200-1500 for a lunch set with a main dish, salad/bread, soup and dessert, or ¥500-800 for dessert only. Even the dishes are inspired by the signature snow design!
Quinn'z Land — Google review
Best if you could understand Japanese.
Entrance fee:
¥700 for adults (¥650 if you log on to their website and find the discount coupon)
¥500 for University Students (student card is required)
¥550? A little cheaper for high school students or below.
There’s a bridal service too. And if you’re a cosplayer, it would be suitable for photoshoot.
Shu Yee — Google review
I'd call it more of an event hall, with a small element of "museum". There's plaques in Japanese, English, and Chinese, so you can learn all about the formation, crystallization, and science of snowflakes in three languages. If you like sparkly things, there's plenty of that to entertain the eyes.
If you're also the sort who likes to get dressed up like a pretty princess, they also have a photo package and rental service. Just call ahead to make a reservation though.
Jenny Bee — Google review
A romantic scenic spot. The 'museum' displays quite a number of 'snow'-like exhibits. With the crystal lamps, this place is decorated as a castle in Frozen. There is also a hall for wedding or music performance, with more than 140 seats. The time spent in this place is around 30 to at most 45 minutes.

Close to the Fukagawa expressway.
My nephew in Asahikawa was transferred to the National Police Agency, so on the way back, I stopped at the Fukagawa exit to buy some fun scales ☺️.
Urokodango Honpo is run by the local Takahashi Shoji Co., Ltd.
In fact, my aunt lived in Fukagawa City for many years (and still lives there), and since we got married, she has known Mr. Takahashi Shoji of Uroko Dango Honpo, and we were treated to a treat👏.
It's been nearly half a century since I first received the scale-shaped triangular package, but the packaging, taste, and chewy texture of rice flour have remained the same 👌 (750 yen for 10 vacuum packs) Raw 9 pieces 680 yen)👏.
I remember that it was initially released in white bean flavor, then red bean flavor, and then matcha flavor ☺️.
About 10 years ago? I think it will be, but Uroko Dango Yokan (picture included) has been released ☺️.
There are also three types, and the light sweetness and chewy texture of the rice flour are just as delicious as Urokodango👌.
There are three flavors available individually (325 yen): white bean, red bean, and matcha, and there are three flavors in a box (865 yen).
All of these yokan are delicious and recommended 🎶.
As expected, it is the long-established confectionery "Uroko Dango" ☺️.
The restaurant on the second floor 🍴 ``Ajishirube Ekitei'' is also a recommended restaurant 🍜.
Although it is self-serve with the purchase of a meal ticket, the recommended menu here is ``Kamameshi.''
All menu items are exquisite. Among them, the chicken kamameshi is delicious and the aroma of soy sauce whets the appetite, so we highly recommend it. Of course, it's local rice 🍚☺️.
I visited for the first time in two years. I'm on my way home, including dinner.
Unfortunately, the staff are still unfriendly. Self is the correct answer😱.
All the menu items I received were delicious👏👏. The recommended dish is the kamameshi menu. A variety of menus from healthy to hearty ☺️☺️.

Absolutely fantastic spot in Hokkaido that has a 10km track that you can control a rail trolley with your family, powered probably by a lawn mower engine. The driver needs to have a driving license to be able to drive but really it's pretty much pressing on the throttle going fast or slow. You will cross a few small bridges on the way, which is pretty interesting. This rail road line was built but unused. I am glad the locals found a good way to make use of it!
Location is a little off the normal areas but worth going to if you want to experience controlling your own rail trolley. There is only 1 session per hour so make sure you book your slot online (if it's not full and you arrive early, it is possible to ask for an earlier slot)
There's an old disused train car and a snow plower at the back if you are interested in exploring.

(Translated by Google) Drive a truck with an engine and run through the rails. It's refreshing to see the scenery of Hokkaido and the 10km round trip of the abandoned railway track. At the turning point, wait for the arrival of all the trucks while watching the two waterfalls. There is still snow in the GW, and Fukinotou and Mizubasho on the side of the track add color.
I had a valuable experience that I couldn't do anywhere else.
It was worth the two hours drive from Asahikawa, where I stayed. It was a one-day course with a schedule of a nearby roadside station, a butterfly shark hall, and a hot spring facility.

It's kind of a one trick pony, but it was fun riding once. You basically ride a little mining cart powered by a lawnmower engine, along a short track. It takes about an hour round trip. The track is old, and very bumpy. Very loud, but beautiful area.

(Translated by Google) This is fun. A repurposed abandoned railway line from the JNR era is used to drive a motorized four-seater cart similar to a go-kart. A regular driver's license is required to drive, but it's not difficult since you only need to use the accelerator and brakes.
The round trip is 5km one way and takes about 3~
It takes 40 minutes. If you live in the Tokyo metropolitan area, you'll realize that it's quite a distance if you imagine taking a cart around three JR stations in the city center. So I don't think you'll need to run enough, but it can get quite cold depending on the weather, such as spring/autumn or light rain, so be sure to take precautions against the cold. When we were there, everyone lent us their work gloves.

From the 45 Degrees North Latitude Monument my friends and I drove towards the Sarobetsu Wetland Center, nestled in the enchanting town of Toyotomi (豊富町).

One of the more popular spot on the Risihiri island, there are a number of seafood sellers. It's a bliss to enjoy the seafood while taking in the good views on a good day. There's also a scenic white deck at the lake which is a splendid photo spot. There's a small roadside station here too!
Plenty of parking spots at this location.

Short walking track around the swap. It’s to the left of the main view point entrance.

Beautiful scenery, unfortunately, it's raining today, so I can't get a good view of Mt Rishiri-Fuji.

This is a beautiful place to view the mountain. There are always many birds circling the area, which is pretty neat to watch. There is no walking path, just a view point with two shops and a few picnic tables. There is also a large public restroom at the end of the parking lot.

Cloudy day not able to see the mountain! But you can have the fresh grill scallops and Rishiri milk in the nearby shops

A nice place to view Mt. Rishiri, with the right weather conditions.
The location has a wooden deck area for visitors to walk out above the water and take photos.
Comes with a carpark and shops that sell food, drinks, souvenirs.
There are some trails leading around the water, but I didn't explore far.

This is a nice stop to view the back side of the mountain and to take a stroll around the lake. The shopkeepers are very friendly and as you drive away they line up to wave goodbye.
