I liked Toba Aquarium; it’s got variety and it’s pretty fun. The only downside is the space! I seriously think they need to give more space to some animals; it’s a bit sad to watch them in those little cube like spaces!

It is a pretty big aquarium with lots of sections. There are some pretty unique animals which you don't see in other aquariums. I think some of the most famous animals here are, sea otters (my kids love them), manatees, and walruses. My personal favorite is the Monster Lab, weird creatures, and freak of nature. I think you will need at least 3-4 hours to enjoy the aquarium and watch all of the shows.

I went with my 8yo and 10yo. It is a fun facility for a whole day to enjoy. The sea otters room was really crowded, but aside from that, the museum is very spacious and we could take our time even on the weekend. There is a room with a collection of strange creatures, temporary exhibits, etc. My kids were happy to see capybaras, clione, and giant sowbug. The scenery from the rooftop was nice too.

In terms of diversity of fish and mammals, the aquarium is amazing. It has a wide variety of fish, as well as marine mammals such as dugongs and manatees, dolphins and porpoises, walruses, seals, and sea lions. However, it falls short in its presentation. The enclosures often end up being basically swimming pools with how their walls and floors are made, and some of the enclosures seemed borderline inhumane with how small they were. There were 3 sea lions in a single pool that couldn't have been more than 15 feet long. Overall, it does sport a wide variety of animals, but because of how many animals there are, they tend to be crammed into much smaller spaces.

You probably found this place after looking for sea otters in a museum. They have different feeding times where it's a show for the guests. If you're those that get utterly disgusted by the idea of animals in captivity, then maybe skip this place, this is an aquarium not a reserve. But if you'll enjoy a chance to see marine life that you may otherwise never get to see in your life, please go. The other varieties are also very much worth seeing. The place has 2 restaurants inside that provide affordable food so no need to worry about BYOF. Do prepare for the idea that you'll stand quite a bit as the viewing area has seats that are mostly occupied already by the very well prepared and timed locals. If you'll be staying in the local vicinity, remember to get tickets in your hotel first as you'll skip the queue there.

There are a lot of animals and different exhibits. Some of the most interesting included a tank of lobster larvae, an exhibit on anomalous octopus, and a beautiful Arapaima tank. I did not see any of the animal shows so I can't comment on them. Unfortunately, I saw a lot of injured creatures (nipped fins, wounds, missing tentacles, and even a dead crayfish in the crayfish exhibit). Many tanks have too many fish in them, and in some the animals barely have enough space to turn around. It was especially bad for some of the mammals, like the sea lions and cats. It made me very uncomfortable. It's a huge aquarium with lots of variety, but if animal welfare is a concern for you, I wouldn't recommend visiting.

The mikimoto museum was worth the discounted entrance fee of $1350 yen or $9.50. The woman diver exhibition was very interesting. I highly recommend spending a few hours at the mikimoto pearl island museum.

The main museum gives you extensive information about pearl cultivation. There is also a Mikimoto Memorial Hall that talks about the founder's life, which was interesting. Information is written in both Japanese and English, so it is easy to understand even if you do not understand Japanese. There are also diving demonstrations by the ama divers several times a day, and I was glad to have caught it. There is also a Mikimoto shop on site if pearls are your thing. One thing to note is that the shop sells both Mikimoto pearls and other pearls.

I will be honest and say I was very sceptical at first especially with the above average price for the entrance fee. But I was very pleasently surprised by what was on offer. The restaurant and pearl/gift shop was not really my thing. But they also offer a Ama diver show which was nice enough and well put together. The cultured oyster pearl part of the museum was actually very informative and went into great detail. The staff there explaining things are very passionate forthcoming and friendly 👌. But for me the biggest surprise and most intriguing part of the Mikimoto island was the person history museum of Mikimoto Kokichi. Learning more about his personal journey and philosophy was a most pleasant surprise 👍 The great 360 degree views around the island are a very nice bonus as well.

Definitely not worth the 1,650 yen entry fee, unless you’re a Mikimoto fan or dying to learn about their history. The views of the backwaters are good though.

Excellent museum with a huge variety of information with bilingual displays (everything from oyster husbandry to science behind seeding the pearl to sorting and creating necklaces and art). The area has gorgeous views, a yummy cafe, and the Ama divers demonstration occurring hourly was neat to see.

Lots of information on pearls in the museum.. although there’s a section with staff explaining part of the procedures unfortunately it’s in Japanese language only.. there was Ama driver performance as well which was amazing that they dive in extremely cold water. Respect for the ama.
