Giola Lagoon is a stunning natural pool nestled within rocky seaside cliffs on the remote island of Thassos. Accessible by a dirt road or hike, this unique monument of nature offers a serene and beautiful experience. Despite being full of sea urchins, the lagoon's still waters and clear ambiance make it a must-see destination on the island. Visitors can expect to encounter goat herds in the area, adding to the overall charm of the experience.
Great place & a must seen in Thasos. It's a natural pool, between the rocks and even though the path to it it's not easy (especially if you are with children) - it takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes by walk for each way - it's definitely worth it.
You have to see it yourself!
RuMi Reviews — Google review
It is very crowded place in June. The water is not clear and not convinced it is worth the walk in a hot summer day down and then up.
It is steep path of 400m approx. If you take the road instead is a bit better. Also park at the bar near Giola not on the first one which is furthest point.
Mjuzhden Mehmedova — Google review
It is not worth time and efforts to go down. Parking which is easy to reach is up. So you need to go very bad rocky way down long way and even worse to go after. If you don’t plan to jump, it is not worth to go down. The view is nice from up. Lagoon is just a hole with water and visible only from very low.
Rasa Savickaite-Otal — Google review
Best visited off-season… Very beautiful and deep enough that you won’t need to worry about the urchins (which only add to the vibe)…
Nikita Krasikov — Google review
This is a must go place if you're on the island. You don't need to be scared about needing to jump, you can also easily go in. The way there and the way back to car.. not easy. But it is worth it. It is amongst most important sites worldwide, a natural swimming pool.
Alexandru Stanescu — Google review
Great experience, the water was really warm in the morning and ready for jumping... recommendation to go really early in the morning to be alone so you can take pictures and everything. It get crowded fast, and it's hard to make good pics and jumps..
Djordje Ljubisavljevic — Google review
A nice and interesting place to visit. Wear good shoes on the way down to the giola pool. Jumping in is a real fun. It's deep enough so you can jump even from the highest rock. Look carefully for other people jumping in.
Ivaylo Ivanov — Google review
There is no entrance fee. Best to go there when everyone is heading back home. We went there around 19:30 (August 2023) and people were clearing out but the lagoon was still crowded. Thanks to that, we had no trouble getting down with our off-road car and we could also find a parking space in the second parking lot.
There are two free parking areas. First one is easy to reach and there is plenty of space. The second one is really close to Giola but it’s a rough ride, the roads are really narrow and there are not much space. If you don’t have an off-road vehicle, leave your car in the first parking lot. If you do have one, you are lucky because you don’t have to walk through the steep hill!
There is a cafe close to the lagoon but it closes around 7 pm. Better come down with a backpack full of refreshments. Also, there is no place to change your clothes. Wearing sea shoes is highly recommended!

This place is absolutely unique. Definitely a must-see in Thassos. It's a little bit hard to reach and there's a lot of dust on the parking and on the road to the rocks especially on very hot and dry summers, so be prepared to have your feet and your car really dusty. Make sure you descent to the rocks with comfortable shoes as the stones are slippery. Unfortunately we drew the short straw this year going in August. Because of the very high temperatures, I suppose, the water wasn't clear, but greenish. Maybe it's plankton and algae. Maybe it's better to visit it in a cooler month. It was still marvelous though - the view is incredible and the rock pool is unique. And of course jumping in it is quite the experience.
Joana Georgieva — Google review
It's an amazing place, It worth it coming here even during the winter season. Take care to not go very down to the bottom with the car, especially if you don't trust it that much. Best idea is to follow the arrows or a very long white "cable" that shows the road to the lagoon.
George Tzinos — Google review
Extraordinary what God created nature can do on it's own. Beautyfull.
When you go there, don't think twice, just jump !
Vasile Elek — Google review
The beauty of this site is surreal but ruined by soo many people visiting and leaving the trash behind. The road to Giola is very steep, slippery and dusty so you need to be very careful when climbing down. The best time to visit would be early in the morning when only a few people are visiting.
Tamara Krstic — Google review
Interesting place to visit. Lagoone inside of skales, turquoise color of water. Many people around. We left our car near to taverna and going down about 5 minutes. Big stones, sea, sky - wonderful view!
Natalia Olivkova P — Google review
There are signs not to jump everywhere, but people still did. So did I.
It was fantastic experience, as it is bit scary. I injured my ribs, so really be careful.
On the way back, the shop is amazing with refreshments...
Danco Dimkov — Google review
Its beautiful and great for jumping BUT, keep in mind that you have to walk up and down from the parking lot on a dusty path on the hill in open sun. You have to be really carefull if you want to jump because the rock under the water is not even and u may touch the bottom and its better not to jump head first from a high place.
AvR S — Google review
Super frumos.
(Translated by Google)
Super nice. One of my favorite places. Don't miss the opportunity to go. You have to go in the morning when it's cooler and freer. You have to go down to giola on foot for approx. 10-15 minutes. There is a longer paved road or you can take the shorter unpaved road, but it is more tiring. In the middle of the road is a small terrace with coolers and ice cream.
Don't forget to wear water shoes because on the edges there are some rocks that you can lean on in the water... but they also have sea urchins😅😅
Cashmeer 04 — Google review
Nice place to see.
We didn’t have luck and we were there in a bad weather, so no swimming for us.
The road is quiet long on foot and difficult, but is worth it.
Lucian E (Lucas) — Google review
Really beautiful monument of nature, what surprised us is that it is full of sea urchins, so can't imagine how you would safely take a bath there. At the moment of our visit the lagoon was very still and water was clear and it had a serene feel about it. You have to tak a 15-20 minutes hike from the parking, although if you have a 4x4 vehicle maybe you can get even closer. There are also goat herds around which contributed to the overall pleasant experience. We visited off season so it was not crowded at all.
Antoniu Gugu — Google review
natural pool, you can jump but you have to be careful of the rocks in the water. you need special water slippers. Free parking nearby. you have to stock up from the parking lot with water and food if you plan to stay longer.(there is a bar where you can find cocktails, water and ice cream at affordable prices)
You can sunbathe on the rocks by the pool. the view is wonderful.

Aliki Beach is a stunning destination with crystal clear waters and small stones that add to its charm. Visitors can enjoy sunbathing and a short walk, while also indulging in meals and beverages at nearby tavernas. The beach offers sunbeds for guests of the tavernas who make a minimum order of 10, as there are no free zones for towels or umbrellas. Free parking is available on the street above the beach.
I think that this is one of the most beautiful beaches. You are able to have a short walk and sunbathing. There is a crystal water with a little stones but it doesn’t make a big problem as the experience is fully because of the place. You can take meals and beverages from any tavern on the beach. There is no free zone for your towel and umbrella, only sunbeds which you can use if you are a guest of the tavernas (minimum order €10) Free parking on the street upside.
Mihaela Slavchova — Google review
The beach was very good. Several areas with different rules with umbrellas and sunbeds. We paid 5 euros for an umbrella and two sunbeds and could use the food and drinks we brought. The girl who gave us information about the area was very nice and kind. Behind us were two private houses and a bar with plenty of food and drinks. We are satisfied!
NadiaK. — Google review
So warm place even on winter, seriously worth it coming here. The water is so clean and place is so calm at the same time. If not paradise then what? I think there must be a cafe sometime in the future everything else looks very good to me.
George Tzinos — Google review
Beautiful water, very wide, clear blue and plenty of space to swim. Also you can do a short hike to see the stone career.
Mihaela Olariu — Google review
Beautiful bay with calm and transparent water, ideal for snorkeling and swimming. Having said that, the beach is way overcrowded, overpriced and overexploited. Best thing to do is wait for late afternoon (after 17:00), grab a foldable chair and sit on the cliffs. The Mini market has very reasonable prices to get drinks or snacks.
Bogdan Stavrev — Google review
The beach is a bit overrated, a little bit too crowded, but the water is nice. The price for the sunbeds depends on the provider, we paid 10€, nothing included. The view of the ancient marble quarrys is really nice, brinh water with you.
Alina Anescu — Google review
Wow wow wow! Everything about this place is fantastic. It's a must to go and visit. Could be crowded on parking and sunbeds. Water is amazing, clean and clear. Sand is light and soft. Food, drinks, music and atmosphere is great. If you come visit this beach, go see Ancient marble quary, it's beautiful with great walking tracks all around just above the beach. There are some amazing houses for rent. Check out
Sanja Pavlović Kovačević — Google review
The beach may be the best one in the island. It is like a natural pool and very clean. But the problem is about the management of the beach. Most of the beach is under control of a firm named Aliki Houses. It is the hotel just near the beach and also rents the umbrella and 2 sunbeds for 10 EUR. It was said that there is toilet and shower opportunity also. At the beginning, it was. But they cut the water of the shower and locked the toilet after 15 pm. It was the rudest behaviour I have ever seen in Thassos. You should see the ladies and man trying to use the shower. Yes, as was mentioned before in some comments, it was the beach firm in the middle with white sunbeds. Hope this kind of people leave the sector since they give harm to Greece tourism.
Çağrı S. — Google review
Very nice beach. Ancient ruins near the beach, Great view and if you don't want to pay for the umbrellas, you can go to the other side of the bay which is also beautiful
Gordan Terra — Google review
It was a very beautiful beach, rocky on the seaside but sandy inside. Crystal clear waters like most beaches in Greece. Many trees and also protected from the winds, you will never find waves or strong winds there.
There are sunbeds all across the beach. There is no price for most of them but you have to eat at the owner's restaurant most of them are fine and tasty.
There is only one exception. There is a place called "Aliki" that charges two sunbeds for 50 euros!!! The place is called "Aliki" (not beautiful Alice which is a different one). There are no menus and the prices are whatever they decide.
Be careful the beach gets crowded fast and you may not find a sunbed if you go around 13.00 or 14.00. There is no room, if you have your own umbrella and want to go solo, unless you want to sit on the rocks on the edge of the beach (which is kind of idyllic but truly uncomfortable).
Giorgos Gogos — Google review
This became my favourite beach from Thassos, the beach and scenery are amazing, the sea is great, do not be afraid about the rocks on the sides and near the sea entrance, after those the sea is clean and sandy. The services and food are great around here and the prices are decent.
Andrei Hanea — Google review
Nice small beach. Not so crowded, 3 restaurants on this aria. We came with the boat on water.
Visited August 2023
Alina Martha Muresan — Google review
Little, crouded, noisy beach, no privacy at all, but with a nice view of the bay. The sunbeds are 10 euro per set or 40eur minimum consumption, depend where you decide to stay. Kids friendly water, not very deep.
Cristina Popa — Google review
Very beautiful place, but too crowded! The sundeds were almost into the water, no free zone. The beach is surrounded by taverns and buildings in old Greek architecture. There is a beautiful eco-path next to the beach, you can see an Ancient Marble Quarry there and other ruins.
Golden Beach, located near the modern village of Skala Potamia on Thassos island, is a popular two-kilometer stretch of golden sand with well-organized facilities such as bars, restaurants, and hotels. It's the largest beach on the island and attracts many tourists due to its popularity. While it can get crowded, there are plenty of accommodations available in nearby mountain villages for those seeking a quieter experience.
Probably the best beach on the island.
Hugh beach with very fine sand, plenty of space for everybody, surrounded for very beautiful elevations, crystal clear water... just wonderful!
Georgi Bonkov — Google review
7 night holiday in May, beginning of the season so still waking up. This is up there with the best Greek holiday we've had.
Beautiful place, friendly people , craggy Greek atmosphere and great value for money.
Felt really safe. The beach is lovely and fairly shallow, so good for kids and crystal clear.
You won't find sports bars or karaoke though.
Very relaxing

Golden beach is the biggest beach on Thassos island. It is a sandy beach. Located on the North-East part of the island. Hence it is very popular and atracts many tourist. There are planty of hotels for accomodation. Lots of tavernas and restaurant providing cuisine including hamburgers, pizzas and pasta. If you want delicios lamb or goat you must drive 10 min. to a mountain villages and find a local taverna which will provide the traditional local hospitability. ln these mountain villagies local artists sell their hand made souvenirs.
Golden beach is huge bay surronded by the highest mountains in Thassos. The view is magestic. The sea most of the time is calm and you can have good time kayaking or padle (SUP) boarding. I don't beleive it is a good place for surfing or kite surfing. The winds are very strong there. Of course you can practice diving, but if snorkeling is your passion you have to walk some time to north and south to the ends of the bay and find propers places to go into see and sea all the beauties of the underwater life of Aegean sea.
I would go there with my family.
Alexander Georgiev — Google review
Absolutely gotta love this beach. It's sandy, long, beautiful, clean, with lots of content and various cafes, that offer free sunbeds with consumation. It's beautiful even when it rains.
Sanja Pavlovic Kovacevic — Google review
Great beach, great water, clean, bad café but that's ok we didn't go there for it. The kids were having a lot of fun
Alexandra Tintareanu — Google review
Very beautiful beach! Fine sand and the water is crystal clear (very nice to swim and snorkeling). A very large free space for your own umbrella.
A good decision will be to come earlier in the morning - till 10-10:30 a.m. in order to secure a parking spot and a good spot at the beach.
Preslava Ilieva - Gabarska (Преслава Илиева-Габърска) — Google review
The most incredible beach we’ve ever been to! We first came here 5 years ago for our 30th anniversary holiday.
Now we visited for our 35th (Coral) anniversary.
Be warned, the currents can be VERY strong so be very careful especially with young children.
Beautiful beach which is just under two miles long. Well worth the walk along the beach to Skala Potamia - which is a little like Skegness but there are several nice tavernas and some great views from the harbour.

Golden Beach Paros: Golden Beach, located south of Parikia, is considered to be one of the best beaches of Paros. Golden Beach (Chrissi Akti) is a long golden sandy beach extending for 700 metres, famous by windsurfers for its ideal wind conditions.
Every August the Professional Windsurfing World Cup is organized on this beach, gathering many windsurfing celebrities. Golden Beach is fully organized offering plenty of windsurfing facilities.
Many hotels, apartments and rooms for rent are available in the area. These beaches are reachable from the asphalted road by local buses or private way of transportation.
The Golden Beach (greek: Hrissi Akti) is located 2.5km west of Chania city and a few meters east of Agii Apostoli. It actually consists of two sandy beaches separated by some rocks. The west cove is the main Golden Beach and the east one is called Aptera beach. The west bay, which is the most popular, is very well organized with umbrellas, lifeguards, showers, cafes, water sports etc. It has fine golden sand and shallow waters, making it ideal for young children. Moreover, there is a playground for kids nearby.
The beach is 1.5km long there is a lot of space so if you have your own parasol you dont have to worry.
????? — Google review
Nice beach, long, it has a South quiet side (more narrow, with rocks at the very beginning) where you can watch the kids in the water from the sunbed and a North larger side (noisier and busier) but there's close good taverns all the way, a restaurant with playground, a fruit Market, a train ride that takes you along the beach, water sports - parasailing, banana rides, canoeing, water boarding, etc
Corina Lazar — Google review
One of the best and longest shore on Thassos Island. The beach is sourranded by beautiful cliffs and the highest peak Ipsarion.
Boris Themytrough — Google review
It's a beautiful beach, with a nice bar, reasonable prices, cold drinks. The staff is friendly and always around so you could order something anytime. The music was also nice and not too loud. Plus the sea was perfectly clear, it was long sandy beach! I recommend it you should definetly visit it! I think it is the most beautiful beach on the island!
Stefani — Google review
I haven't seen a seashore so shallow for such a big water area. This beach is PERFECT for kids. Bar seems a bit overpriced but I mainly shopped from the nearby Carrefour market and stayed at the free beach area. Coming early in the morning -8/9/10 is a bright idea, then leaving for lunch and escaping the impossible heat and coming back around 18.
The sun is visible until almost 21 and the view to the mountain is just beautiful...
I have some comments about some garbage in the sand but I can easily blame my fellow Bulgarians for this nasty habit. ( they are much worse at our Bulgarian Black Sea ).
Martin Yankov — Google review
The beach is great, quality sands, highly recommended for families with kids! There are lots of restaurants where you can have lunch! In terms of price, there are decent costs, 8-15 euros per person. As well as you have facilities like WC, showers, a few places where you can park for free, volleyball.
Sergiu Badicu — Google review
Very nice beach, my partner and i really enjoyed it. Deserving of its name for sure! The sand is extremely fine, soft and shines like glitter. I'd recommend walking along the beach too.
Mary A. — Google review
The resort itself is not that great (yes, there are very nice taverns and restaurants, but that's about it). The beach and the surrounding mountains are awesome. The views you get from the water are amazing. P.S.: There is a doctor's office kind of close, but the nearest pharmacy is 3.5 km away. P.S.2: The water gets VERY dirty close to the shore when there are waves.
Daniel Gheorghe — Google review
Beautiful sandy beach several kilometers long. Water can have waves however it is shallow and perfect for kids.
Beds are mostly rented by local restaurants with varying prices or consumption limits.
Parking space is plentyfull and free.
La Scala Beach is a beautiful sandy shore featuring charming thatched parasols, sun beds, and a vibrant cocktail bar. Visitors can enjoy thrilling jet-skiing activities and admire the stunning views while lounging on the beach. The beach boasts an exceptional design and offers crystal-clear sea water for a refreshing dip. The food is delicious, and patrons can indulge in good drinks while taking in the pleasant ambiance.
It's a nice beach bar. You have many options, 2 beds and umbrella 20€ (10 per person)
2 beds and umbrella closer ti the beach 40€ (20 per person)
small lounges 150€+
For this money you can drink and eat, it's nkt that you pay for the beds, it's the must consuption you need to make. You can see pictures how it looks. Prices are little higher, but it's normal becaus everything looks nice and investment of building everything was big. Coffee around 6+€ and food is 10+€.Free parking in front.
Djordje Jovic — Google review
It is nice, and good for young people but prices are high, music is too loud, not good for kids even if there was plenty. Some sunbeds are too expensive, and when those who reserved them finally comes to the beach they start ordering bottles of drink and some stupid food and that is not interesting for all of us "normal people"
Water is nice, stuff is ok
sonja iskrenov — Google review
Beach is beautiful and well arranged. Staff is really nice but the prices are much higher than every beach bar that we visited on Thassos. We ordered for breakfast scramble eggs and turkey hem tost that were fine , but nothing special and not worth the price point. We also ordered a plate of fruits that was amazing. You can use sunbeds if you plan on spending 15e per person (or 30e if you want some batter spot). Menu is really small, food options and desert options are limited.
Sara Golo — Google review
Perfect beach to spend a day. Great design, purest sea water. Really enjoyed being there. In late Sept almost deserted.
ekaterina ninitsa — Google review
Very nice beach, a little pricey on food and drinks but considering that there is no cost for the sunbeds they integrate that cost in the price of the food and drinks. Also the reservation is possible only for the VIP area where you need to order(during the whole stay) for around 100€ per sunbed. On the regular area (first 2-3 rows near the water) you cannot make reservation, (first come first served) the order is minimum 30€ per sunbed. Good music, awesome atmosphere, the beach looks exactly as in the pictures, has mostly sand, no rocks on the beach, water is not deep near the shore. Totally worth to visit it and spend a day.
alin popa — Google review
The greatest ambience on the island with soft music, great design and crystal clean water. Perfect place for snorkeling
Van Bell — Google review
The best organised beach and the best decorated one.
The owners didn't cut corners and managed to create a lush beach jungle.
Palms, banana trees and lots of tropical plants combined with natural materials create an oasis for everyone. Even if you sit in the 8th row of sunbeds you have a feeling of being submerged into jungle paradise.
The restaurant is equally beautiful and they have different food menus from the beach.
The staff are very friendly and super cool.
I will highly recommend , we spend 3 days on this beach and would be visiting again in the future.
Second on my fav list.

This beach it’s a must to visit when you are in Thassos. They have great food and great services. I loved the fact that they also had a DJ and good music and also the beach it’s pet friendly. The waiter was very nice to our dog and he even offered water for her. Amazing experience at La Scala Beach!
Andreea Neacsu — Google review
Amazing ambiance. Good quality music. Sea is awesome. We swimm next bays on left and right as well. Food not special but in total a great experience with 30 euro consumption in a loca.
elcin miras — Google review
One of the most beautiful beaches in the island, we really loved the place and the sea is mesmerizing. A few things to consider:
•If you want to have a peaceful -reading book and sunbathing- day, you should sit in the garden or back of the place, because there are speakers with great music in the middle area
•The seats near the sea are a little bit loud due to families with children - it's understandable you shouldn't be blaming the place for that
•Around lunch time everyone starts ordering food so if you don't want to wait long you should order a little bit sooner
•There are different staff members for different service, staffs who wear light colored shirts are the ones that take your order and help you around the beach and the ones that wear dark shirts are the ones that bring your order
Only downside is that they don't have any lock on their toilets and toilets don't have anything to hang your stuff when you're in there.
Drinks and foods are really great, we tried most of the cocktails and foods.
So if you want a great-vibrant and aesthetically pleasing place to have a great time this beach is really great option for you.
Eda — Google review
In my opinion La Scala is the most beautiful beach and beach bar in Thassos! Sandy beach, clear blue water…We were here in second half of September, no crowds. Sunbeds are paid for consumption of food and drinks, 10€ per person. The sunbeds for this cost are in the middle, bellow the palms, so not directly on the water like the more expensive. But we didn’t mind, because the ambience and music is wonderful. I have never been to more beautiful beach bar. The prices for coffee are around 5€, sandwitches 10€. Frappe is nothing special but they have excellent cappucino! Toaletes are clean, only donwnside is no wifi, which is the reason for one star less. But all in all, a place worth visiting definitely! 🩵🩵

Amazing service from all the staff and the view is breathtaking. The food was excellent. Highly recommend.
Farid Rashid — Google review
Amazing ambiance, the entire place gives off an exotic vibe, definitely very unique. Dependong on your prefference sunbeds go from 10e up to 250e. The downside is it is very crowded, you need to come early in the morning to get a seat. The wather is crowded as well as the beach is not very long. It does have good weather sports.
Tamara Krstic — Google review
Amazing beach with beautiful view. You don't have to pay the seats but you have to make consumption of a certain value dependin on how near you are to the water. The food is very tasty. The beach is pretty crowded so you have to get there early.
Gabriela Taizs — Google review
It is well organized and designed beach.
It is better to call this place as a club than beach. All the day long there is very loud music with DJ. In own concept, it is successful and vibrant. But you wish to have peaceful day with sun, book, rest it may not be the best place.
Shadow is not enough for most of the sunbeds.
You need to spend 20eur per person if you located in seaside.
If you want to find the place in the cheapest area (garden), you should definitely go to before 10:00.
Last but not least, around 17:00 I see some weird foam and dirty things at 50 meters ahead of sea. It didn't look hygienic. Hope it was not what I thought and only for one day to my luck.

It would be unfair to say anything negative about this marvelous place! Location, ambient, management, service, food, music, overall experience - masters of making you feel great and wanting to come back again and again! And, of course, the stars that make this place amazing: Aris, the restaurant manager - it's a real pleasure and honor to enjoy your stay under the impeccable service of this gentleman, amazing manager who makes sure you get 100% value for money and a million dollar worth smile and chat! And the best part is that he takes care of his team as a family, that's why they excel! This amazing manager is a gem to have on board in such demanding business! One of his best wings - Rafaella, you can tell she learned from the best and combines her skill with amazing personality! And of course, Mr. Jorgos, the chef, who's amazing cuisine would satisfy the taste buds of the most refined eaters! We simply can't get enough of this place and these fantastic people, they make our stay so memorable and enjoyable! Wholeheartedly recommended, the best value and comfort you can get in Thassos! The owner of this paradise on earth definitely deserves all compliments for business applied👏👏

EO Thasou Limenarion, Limenas Thassos 640 04, Greece
The Archaeological Museum of Thassos showcases a wide array of ancient artifacts and historical objects that are related to the island's rich past. From sculptures to pottery, this museum displays remains from the prehistoric era all the way up until after classical times. Visitors can explore exhibits dedicated to everyday items used by ancient Greeks or even temples and sanctuaries found throughout the island.
Does not seem much from the outside, but once you get inside we were surprised how big and well kept the museum actually is. You can watch documentaries about Thassos island starting from prehistory to more recent history. Friendly staff and the museum was quite empty, so it had quite an intimate feel to it, which made easy to have an imersive experience into the islands history.

A small but smart museum. Some of the treasures were on tour in other museums, but for those interested in history, it’s much to see!

Great museum with so much to see, from prehistoric era of the island to the Neolithic era all the way to the ancient Greece and even some after classical period. So much history in here.
You'll definitely be in awe with so many statues and history from everyday things that ancient Greeks used to rooms dedicated just to the sanctuaries and temples that are all around the island.

The museum was empty when we visited and that was on a Saturday's afternoon at the beginning of June. We walked around for about an hour and we barely read the history, only vague to make an idea but the exhibits are some gorgeous pieces. History and a blast into the past at the price of a pie. Definitely worth your time, if you enjoy museums that is. The main statue at the entrance is as epic as it gets.

A lovely and underrated museum. If you visit the island, it is an experience that you shouldn't miss!

Very nice museum with plenty and interesting exhibitions. Access for baby stroller can be challenging due to the number of steps in-between the floors, but there's fortunately a connecting lift for the main ones (ground and first floor).

Was so much bigger than I expected, the inside is very aesthetically pleasing with multiple open floors. A nice selection of statues and ruins. Informative video documentary in the beginning.

Great place! Tasos have great history and museum displays it first class. Lots of remains from earliest Hellenistic period. Very good setup like timeline. Also museum is set at the middle of remains of old town. Must visit when in Limenas.

A must see place. Great archeological site. They have identified the prison where the Apostle Paul was incarcerated. The theater is in great conditions.

The ancient Phillipi ruins were one of the highlights of our two-week trip to Greece. It is stunning, especially if you can take in the history and biblical significance of this place. It is well-kept and easy to get around. There are helpful signs and informational tokens.
They have a museum that is informational and intriguing. The site is situated on the side of a mountain with a beautiful view. To me, it is a must-see site.

The archaeological site of Philippi offers a captivating journey into Greece's ancient history. With well-preserved ruins, including the ancient theater and basilica, it provides an impressive glimpse into the daily lives of those who once inhabited this area. What makes Philippi truly unique is the blend of Roman and early Christian architecture, making it a distinctive destination for history enthusiasts. As you wander through the site, the echoes of Alexander the Great's influence become evident, adding an extra layer of historical richness to the experience. Philippi is not just a collection of ruins; it's a captivating testament to the interwoven threads of Greek, Roman, and early Christian civilizations.

Great site. Well laid out. Even with a lot of tour groups it didn’t feel crowded.
Larry Larkins — Google review
Father of Alexander the Great II. Philip founded the great city, which he named after himself, in what had previously been a small colony, located on an important road. After the Battle of Philippi, whose place in our minds was deepened by Shakespeare's verses, this place became like a small Rome.
The Philippi Archaeological Site, today classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a wonderful archaeological site that is definitely worth a visit. When you walk around here, you instantly realize that you are visiting a smaller-scale Rome. The architecture and layout of the city are very similar to Rome. It is obvious that the excavations and studies were insufficient, but this also ensured that it was very well preserved.
Choose a day with good weather to visit and enjoy this historical site in the middle of greenery. I definitely recommend you to visit the Philippi Archaeological Museum within the area.

An outdoor museum on the tracks of ancient civilization and people, recalling the Roman Empire, well preserved and undergoing constant discovery works to show the modern world how our ancestors used to live.
A couple of hours well spent!

Well worth visiting. There are very few shaded areas so a sun hat and plenty of water is necessary in the summer months. There are a number of helpful information boards (not shaded!) in both Greek and English for the primary areas of interest. Toilets inside (museum) and outside the main entrance. Cafeteria outside the main entrance. Beware: much of what we see, such as the amphitheatre, has been partially restored. A good eye will be able to see the original remains and what has been restored... that is if it looks too good (new) its been added! Thankfully it's not a problem for me. It also helps to get a better since of what it was like.

In my opinion a wonderful place to wonder through history. There are beautiful architectural details as well as different building methods and styles all mixed together in this one place.
I would suggest looking up the history a little beforehand the signs are a minimal source for information.

Sadly not opened. One of the few world heritage sites we actually were and couId not visit due to opening times. I hate the greek opening times. First day closed due to national day, then closed because tuesday. They are a shame for a Unesco world heritage

Greece is the perfect place to visit ancient places and to “inhale” history. This site is a must if you visit Kavala. The experience we had is unique; you get to see an ancient Greek city as its natural location.
The site is large and includes the theatre, a museum and the actual remains of the city of Phillipi. Each turn you come upon amazing structures. There weren't many visitors, which meant enjoying these beautiful structures in peace.
There is so much history to be discovered at this site, much more there than we expected. It is like a hidden gem.
Very well done! Displays really showed and explained alot. I do recommend a Larger and detailed city reconstruction, in addition to the pure white one showed.

Small and compact. Good displays in Greek and English. You'll understand the site a bit better after visiting the Museum. It's include in the entry fee to the ruins

Very nice museum next to the actual archeological site. I was able to get very close to amazing examples of Greek art and findings from the dig close by. Descriptions were in English and Greek

It's a nice experience to learn so much about Phillipi or Filipos in spanish. They have a lot of marble engravings with decrees from the roman empire. And some marble stuff outside the building, which makes a picture of the valley a very nice memory.
The museum is for adults who are into byzantine and some bible history.
The entry fee is 3 euros and for students is free. So the trip is worth it.
And the guides speak good english.

Such an amazing experience visiting the Philippi museum. Exhibits from neolithic era up to Roman times and of course so much information on Saint Paul and early Christianity. Definitely a must visit and really friendly personnel.

Philippi gives you the impact of Christianity on a Roman city. The apostle Paul brought the gospel here and you see the impact for the next 500 years. It's worth time.

This is a very nice museum. The entrance fee covers both the museum and the Archeological Site of Philippi. After the entrance you first see the archeological site. It can take quite a time depending on your interest. The signs showing the museum are well placed, you won't miss it. The museum is not very big.
The opening hours a bit short. From 8.30 to 15.30 only. We were asked to come by 15.20 to the gates. At summer time I would recommend to visit the place in the morning since you don't have much shadow. Don't miss the mosaics at the archeological site.

The museum is well laid out and lit, like many of the Greek Museusms. Tucked among the ancient ruins of Phillipi.
Arun Narayanan — Google review
The museum was on the site of the Archeological site of Philippi. The museum has 3 floors. Windows and great air conditioning. It was very hot outside in September 2020. They also had a machine full of drinks and snacks. You could see the museum in an hour. But the site could use 2-3 hours. The signs are in English and Greek. Very great for tourists.
Dey Travels — Google review
I like archeological sites and all that comes with it. This one was underwhelming. The place was nicely madebut there where for starters, no parking places and a car is the only way to get there. The museum lacks context and seems to race though centuries from 5000 bc to Roman times in 5 meters. The excavation was nice but again, no signs or context. Let your imagine play how the Romans walked this place or how Brutus succumbed to Antonius 42bc in front of this city....
This was one of the best wilderness experiences we've ever had.
The team at Riverland Outdoor Activities are the most organised, professional and safety-conscious in the area.
Above all, they're friendly, knowledgeable and go out of their way to make sure their customers have a great day.
These are the things that were important to us that we want to share:
If you're kayaking, The Riverland Team provide wetsuits, thermal protection and life vests. These are all in excellent condition and are cleaned with an antibacterial solution after every use, for at least 24 hours, which we were very relieved to hear.
Be mindful of your valuables and anything that you would be devastated to lose in the water. The Riverland Team provide watertight containers that will protect your things. The guides will take plenty of photos for you and will share them with you via email inclusive with your ticket fee. The Nestos River has many different sections and certain currents can be unpredictable and can flip you into the water, which is an experience in itself! If that happens, be cool, the guides are experts and will help you.
Included in the ticket fee, the team also provide snacks, tea/coffee and a light lunch all which are fresh and catered to dietary needs.
Overall, these people are the best at what they do. Trust your day out with them and you will have a great time. To our guides Christina and Ioanna, thank you!

Nice welcome at riverland center, transfer to the starting point with our guide dimitri took approx. 1h, but the flew by because dimutri was telling us, a lot of the country.
Quick but precise introduction
The landscape and the river are great landscapes, a must see
Special thanks to our guide dimitri. It was a pleasure to be on tour with gim. He always takes care of all tour members, tells you everything about the river and its fauna and flora.
The rests are something very special. A table, the meal nicely presented. You can drink coffee if you want!!!
Summary: a great nature experience, also for the not so experienced kayaker.
Tipp: book riverland and dimitri as tour guide!

Now that was fun!! 🤩 We were looking for a special holiday activity for us and our two 14 y/o teenagers, and found the Nestos Rafting Tour to be the perfect combination of enjoying the beautiful Greek nature with a splash of adventure. And we weren't disappointed! The booking process via telephone with Christina was perfect, all our questions were answered and a pdf with all relevant infos sent beforehand - including a Google Maps link for the meeting point in Paranesti. There, we were greeted by the super friendly staff, and our Captain for the day, Georgios, even spoke German. After having been supplied with life vests, helmets and neoprene shoes (we were also offered full body neoprene suits, but we thought the 9 °C Nestos water would be refreshing on a 37 °C day 😉).
So off we went in a trusty vintage Mercedes mini bus (which originally must have served in the Netherlands in the previous millenium, as some window stickers read 'Nooduitgang'), and after a short ride of about 10 mins we arrived at the cool and shady river bank where we'd embark for our journey. With us was another family of four from Cyprus - including their grandma of about 75 years! (To say it in advance: She also enjoyed the trip, and arrived with us safe and all smiles in Paranesti. So you see this tour is really doable for almost everyone).
Georgios gave us a thorough instruction, and even as first time rafters we felt fit and ready to conquer the Nestos river then 🏴☠️.
We hopped into the boat, did a quick practice round in calm waters - and started our 9 km trip downstream.
To make an almost too long story short: It was a fantatstic experience! Thanks to Georgios in the back, we always felt safe, had fun in the waves and enjoyed the calm passages and the quiet.
While most of the time the river does the job, some rowing by the crew is required, appr. for about 1/3 of the time. So the water bottles supplied by Riverland were much appreciated. Though the air on the river is nice and cool, often with a light breeze, the Greek sun still does its job - so don't forget a proper sunscreen 🌟
We say thanks to the Riverland team for the great day - we're sure we'll try another experience in the future!

The guide was nice, but they don't really speak English. The river was very low and it was a pretty boring experience at this time of the year. They told me on the phone it's regulated by tgedam and there's enough water. My kids were pretty bored. The staff aren't the most polite. The price is very high for the overall experience. I wouldn't go again.

The House of Shadow in Xanthi is a captivating exhibition featuring unique shadow art created by Triandafyllos Vaitsis. The display showcases shadows formed by optical illusions using discarded items. The old town of Xanthi, where the house is located, offers a glimpse into its preserved Ottoman-influenced architecture and colorful houses. Visitors can explore narrow stone alleys and immerse themselves in the vibrant surroundings. The artist personally guides visitors through the exhibit, offering insights into the creative process.
I highly recommend visiting this museum whenever you can. The exhibitions there are unique and with a lot of thought behind them. The concept behind every composition is different and has its own story. Absolutely amazing!

Old Town is a charming area with cobblestone streets, featuring a mix of Byzantine Greek churches, Ottoman mosques, and neoclassical mansions. Some of these historic buildings have been repurposed into landmarks such as the Town Hall and the Folk & History Museum. Visitors can enjoy alfresco cafes and pubs around lively Antika Square, while green spaces near the Kosynthos River offer a peaceful retreat.

Each time I’m coming here the place is totally different. A lot of new things are built here. I remember my first visit here. There was just one hotel and few houses that rent a room. Back then there was no boarder crossing spot etc.
Now here are a lot of interesting hotels and guest houses.
Overall the place is worth to visit and you can find also craftsmen that work in a small shops. The feeling is good and I’m positive that will come back really soon here. The nature and all the place around are super. And people are polite and friendly.

Very beautiful old town, built in the old Bulgarian tradition with cobble stone streets, artisan and craft shops, family hotel houses and restaurants offering traditional food. There are also a couple of museums there. The artisan and craft shops are not always open despite the announced working hours. For some of the reataurants you will need a booking in order to eat there, especially for dinner. What makes the old town such a great place to visit is the cultural calendar that offers variety of festivals, concerts, etc., so it is worth cheking the website of Zlatograd municipality to see what is there on the calendar and when. It is a small place, where you can spend an hour (hour and half the most) to walk from one end to the other and visit all interesting artisan shops.

Zlatograd is a very small and cozy town nested in Rhodope mountain. The Ethnographical Aerial complex presents a group of houses in the traditional style, some of them turned into museums, telling us stories of the times of voivods, Ottoman yoke and the struggles of Bulgarian people. The festival of Delyu Voivod takes us back in time in a realistic manner and the great reanactment has already turned into a tradition with people participating with enthusiasm and pride.

Its very nice historical place. Not very big but interesting. You will find many authentic shops that still do hand made stuff. There are few museums that I recommend to visit: one is Delyu Voivoda's house and the other is the school. There is also very old church built into the ground. It is the best place to visit but it is around 10min walk or 5min drive from the ethnographic area.

The Bachkovo Monastery "Uspenie Bogorodichno" is an Eastern Orthodox monastery that was established in 1083. It is situated about 30km south of Plovdiv and features stunning art, an ossuary, and a cathedral. The majority of the complex was built during the 17th century onwards, with the Church of Sveta Bogoroditsa as its vibrant centrepiece.
Second largest monastery in Bulgaria. Beautiful building with two churches - only the main one is open to the public. The church is beautiful with elaborate paintings and gold ornaments. Here you will find a famous painting (icon) of The Virgin Mary - believed to be miraculous.
The monastery is also situated in the mountains. Only a short drive from Plovdiv, the area offers some great hiking opportunities. You can visit any time of the year. During the hot summer months, it is a great escape from the heat on Plovdiv and Asenovgrad.

I’ve been here as a kid but couldn’t remember much, so I decided to revisit again as an adult. Very peaceful place, and makes you wonder about what life was like back in the day when it was built. The church is gorgeous and the courtyard is quite relaxing when there are no people. I went around 9:30 AM on a weekday and there was barely anyone. Learned that if you want a tour, you can request one at the museum. Also, they have white pigeons and peacocks! Recommend if you are in the area.
P.S. for the avid hikers, there is a path leading from the monastery to Asenova Fortress. Had I had the time, I would’ve done it. The area is absolutely gorgeous.

Only a half hour from Plovdiv, this Monastery dating from the 11th C. has a rich and important history. It has been the site of many critical events in Bulgarian history including playing a big part in saving the Jewish population from Nazis in WWII! Parking is easy and cheap. No cost to visit. Spectacular church, interesting preserved mosaics in dining hall, nice museum too. Interesting vendors selling good food and some interesting items along the wall from the parking lot. Have Fun!

Sacred archaeological site & ruins on a rocky hilltop with remains of ancient temples & palace.
An interesting place to stop by at. We stopped for a night in the car park, and went up the hill in the morning. They are working on improving access to the site at the moment so we had to avoid some work in progress, but it was still an interesting site to visit.
There’s a reasonable number of information boards about that give an idea of the uses of the various buildings.

This ancient city is still being excavated today, and some say it will take another 10 years to complete. It is quite massive and sitting atop a mountain. It's best to go with a guide who can explain everything in detail. There is a 10-15 mins walk from the carpark to the top, and it's a moderately steep hike.
It's no real issue for anyone like me who has a fear of heights. I managed it quite comfortably. Costs 6lev for admission plus 1lev for the carpark.
There are stalls at the entrance selling every conceivable type of rock and crystal plus jewellery. One that definitely should not to missed.

Maybe the most popular tourist attraction in the Rhodope mountains. An ancient place inhabited by different cultures throughout the centuries, with rich history. I recommend taking a guided tour so you could get the most from your trip.

The scale of the place is enormous. It took us around 2-3 hours to check out the whole location, though more is being discovered, so spending at least half a day is what I would recommend. You can grab a map at the entrance, though most of the places can be guessed in terms of their functionality just by looking at them. Having a guide with you is probably very useful so they can give more information and answer any questions that come up.
The view is also incredible!

Nature and the ruins are stunning and you can walk around quite a bit and discover other paths or ruins. Do bring water when you go up. The chemical toilets at the start are in my opinion for emergencies only.

Very nice place and walk (I believe I needed an hours with photos and all). You will need water and confrotable shoes. They offer guides, maps and books at the entrance since there are no explanatory signs inside and you would not know what was what. I didn't bought a map or else and still it was very nice. I would definitely recommend it.

It's an incredible site thinking of how long it's been there, I would give it for but think how it's being managed is disappointing.
It's a shame they are spending so much time and money on the entrance building instead of maintaining the pathways and cutting the growth back. Information signs are also faded.

Centuries-old mountaintop fort ruins with a restored church, plus a terrace & panoramic views.
A beautiful place to stop. You can walk up the mountain or you can drive and park your car for 1 leva per hour. The entrance itself costs 4 leva / 2 leva children (only cash). There is also a small store with souvenirs and water.

If you don't mind a few stairs, this place has a breathtaking view on the valley and surrounding mountains which is worth the Levas. The fort itself doesn't contain much else than a chapel, but still worth having a look next to the uphill viewpoint.

It's a beautiful place to visit if you love historical buildings and the nature. It's 30 minutes drive from Plovdiv. You need to purchase a ticket to enter the site (4 lev). The view from top and the little church are worth seeing. Also there are few natural water sources on the way up with ice cold water to drink or refresh yourself.

Nice view to the mountains and fortress.
You can park at the foot of Mount and complete 20 minutes walk. Road is good and at the foot there are more space for parking, if you are driving. You can enter inside the Fortress territory, walk around and see inner part, where the church is. Entrance to Fortress territory is not free but for 4 Leva you will spend here nice time. Come in the second part of the day, to catch
good photo (in the morning some part will be against the sun)

An interesting place to visit. Even though there is a visitors center, the ruins are surprisingly undocumented. I asked if there was a floor plan or rendering of what the fortress might have looked like, but they have none. The chronology is a bit of a mystery as well. It would be fun to spend a lot more time there and work out all the details.

Think about parking in advance!
Wear only sport shoes!
If you go by car especially in high season the parking space at the destination point is quite small and overcrowded.
Wear sport shoes only! Pathway is full of sharp rocks!!!
The view from the peak is very beautiful.
I recommend this place!
Remains of Emperor Trayan's city. It could be taken care off a bit more.

Lovely! there is no entry fee and no explanations are given. There is only one good article (the wiki one in Bulgarian) found about this place. Nonetheless it's definitely worth talking a look. You can admire the communist buildings in the background, makes for quite an arc over history. Not clear what is preserved from Roman times and what is reconstructed
Klaus Wanderer — Google review
Beautiful roman ruins, you can walk through the forum and there is no entrance fee. Problem is just that they erected everything and didn't make clear where the originals stop and the reconstruction begins. Also there is almost no information, you just walk among the place and have to guess what it is that you are walking on, if you aren't an archaeologist or historian. Good place to visit, but go to the Stara Zagora Museum first to get informed ;-)

Ice building. A few very interesting and worthier pieces. A lot of mistakes in the titles and the objects. Does not match. So if you don’t know history you will be lost. More about ancient and Rome period. No entry possible with ISIC or ITIC cards. So we are still disconnected from the world. At the end it is a must visit. But could be better.

My visit was not first in the museum, but first one with a guide, and it makes a world of difference. The guide's English was excellent, and she talked very informatively. The museum is awesome, and visitors are able to witness the rich history of Stara Zagora and the region from ancient times to nowadays. Definitely warmly recommend!

Beautifully made and there are a lot of artifacts from which you can learn about our and ancient history. In most museum you pay the same tax, but you have much less items to observe. For example, in Stara Zagora museum there were 4 floors full of history, meanwhile most of the museums offer maximum of 2.
I strongly recommend visiting this museum!
Incognito_ZIT Flexing — Google review
The museum has very beautiful artefacts on screen but on the contrary with other and more important arhaeological museums around Bulgaria like the one in Sofia, Varna, Ruse or Plovdiv where you are allowed to take pictures with a camera, this museum does not allowed you to take photos. I think they are very jealous of sharing photos of their artefacts with lovers of history. Meanwhile outside in the ruins of the forum you can find that none is taking care of the ruins which has rubbish, plastics, graffiti, tall grass and rotten wood in the steps of the auditorium. I would like the city and the museum would take more seriously which is important, a photo of one artefact or the whole ruins. Photo taken under the bridge over the forum.

Most perfect building for an archaeological exhibition that I've ever seen! It lies directly above the ancient Roman street and amazingly includes it into the building. The different historical periods are on different levels, so you can go from antiquity on the ground floor to the 20th century on the 4th floor. It has a lot of interesting exhibits, you can get a guided tour and you also can book tours for children. The museum offers good food and drinks in a restaurant directly beside the Roman ruins, clean and modern toilets as well as nice souvenirs an a small museum shop.

There is a gift shop where you can buy many products containing rose oil or souvenirs relating to it. In all we spend about an hour going around.

Abandoned Communist-period monument noted for its futurist, flying saucer-inspired architecture.
It’s a pretty epic building perched on top of the hill!
We arrived late at night, having struggled up the hill in our RV once we’d got the snow chains on it.
When we awoke in the morning the sun shone down on this beautiful building and the snow glistened.
Hard work walking up to it through snowdrifts but worth it.
Incredible views from here. It’s well worth a visit it.

Very interesting crumbling communist meeting place. Very large and powerful structure. You can only imagine the speeches that went on on those steps on inside the space ship. There is a small ski run on the back side that is operational so worth a check if you are keen to do some winter sports as well.

The Khadzhi Dimitur, listed among the world's top 10 alternative tourist destinations, boasts a history steeped in political significance. Originally serving as the meeting place for the Bulgarian Communist Party, this architectural relic now stands in a state of graceful decay atop a picturesque mountain. The journey to reach the Khadzhi Dimitur is as captivating as the destination itself, offering a scenic hike that marries natural beauty with the anticipation of exploring a unique ruin. The building's current condition adds a layer of intrigue and character, transforming it into a must-visit spot for those seeking offbeat travel experiences. Its dilapidated state, rather than diminishing its appeal, enhances the allure, offering a tangible glimpse into Bulgaria's historical narrative. This juxtaposition of natural splendor and historical decay creates an atmosphere that is both haunting and beautiful, appealing to adventurers and history enthusiasts alike. The Khadzhi Dimitur stands as a testament to the passage of time, inviting visitors to step into a space where history and nature converge in a striking tableau.

Probably one of the most controversial buildings in Bulgaria, the Buzludzha Monument is located near the city of Kazanlak and on the Hadzi Dimitar peak. Because of its communistic origin, the Monument suffers from variety of problems, such as ownership issues, lack of preservation strategy, no vision for its future. While the construction attracts hundreds of tourists every year, and even though it is considered an architecture masterpiece, the Monument is in ruins and decomposes slowly.
Be mindful of the strong wind at the peak. It could get chilly even in the summer. If you visit, you can also check out the Shipka Monument nearby, as well as the incredible church in Shipka village.

This is the desolate interior of a monument from the Soviet era, when Bulgaria belonged to the socialists. If you think its interior is impressive, its exterior (see next slide) is just as captivating. It appears to be a kind of flying saucer on top of a hill and, despite the futuristic look, it was built back in 1981 to commemorate a congress of the Bulgarian Communist Party. It is now completely abandoned.

Etar is an ethnographic museum that showcases Bulgaria's traditional crafts and way of life. The historic complex comprises nearly 50 shops and workshops, situated along cobbled lanes lined with trees by a tributary of Yantra River. It is like a movie set with costumed performers demonstrating the handicrafts. Visitors can enjoy tasty coffee made on hot sand or indulge in pumpkin jam or walnut pie.

I am definitely biased because I am from Gabrovo and I study Ethnology....but I love that place. The fact that you can turn back time and see how Gabrovo used to be a major centre for craftsmanship. The fact that every part of your folklore is celebrated here is very valuable. Yes it is commercial but it still has a value. Beautiful museum to speak a sunny day there. It has everything for everyone.
Maybe the two downsides are the fact that the museum still needs some improvement for how to present the information in more interactive way. Another thing that museums in Bulgaria definitely lack is inclusivity for disabled people. Which is kinda disappointing but that's not a single case for our country..... unfortunately.

Nicely done, but a bit limiting as an experience.
Someone is building a massive hotel overlooking the park + right next to it there is an abandoned hotel project.

The Open Air Ethnographic Museum "Etar," nestled on the northern fringes of Bulgarka Nature Park and serving as a distinct quarter of Gabrovo in northern Bulgaria, stands as a living exhibit of the nation's rich heritage. This open-air museum bridges the natural splendor of the park with the urban charm of Gabrovo, offering a unique glimpse into the vibrant customs, culture, and artisanal skills that define Bulgaria.
Visitors to this ethno village are treated to an immersive experience that brings Bulgarian traditions and culture to life. The setting, marked by its picturesque beauty, provides a perfect backdrop for delving into the local way of life. One of the highlights of the museum is the traditional bakery, which is an essential stop for any visitor. Here, one can witness the art of Bulgarian bread-making, an integral part of the country's culinary tradition.
The museum's dedication to showcasing various aspects of Bulgarian craftsmanship extends beyond just baking. Artisans demonstrate age-old techniques in woodworking, pottery, and weaving, among others, allowing visitors to appreciate the skill and creativity that have been passed down through generations. This cultural haven not only educates but also captivates those who seek to understand and appreciate the historical and cultural fabric of Bulgaria.

Not what it used to be!
The old masters of each art are mostly absent. Younger people manage the stands and mostly sell instead of making demonstrations of the crafts. The site is being renovated partially so there where vehicles, cables, electric chainsaws which ruin the historical illusion this beautiful place creates.
I was disappointed but there is still a lot to see and many things are explained in videos and printed materials. I’d still recommend it but with a guide and demonstrations of the different crafts.

One of the best maintained museums in Bulgaria! It was exceptionally clean, with a lot of places to rest under the trees, while learning how the people in the region have been living a few centuries back. There are a lot of working expositions with diagrams and explanations of how the different machines work and what their main purpose is. You can also buy handmade goods on site, some of them are made in the complex (for example the sugary treats goods in the bakery). If you visit the museum during the craftmanship festival, you can see the craftsmen in action and buy something that was made in front of your eyes.

The area is so beautiful. The Monastery and the cave are breathtaking. The cave admission fee is 5 Leva (£2.3) and actually you explore it on your own! Sure there are other visitors but you don't have a creepy person following your every step like in the UK. It is 300 m of corridors and halls, nicely illuminated and the person selling tickets to the cave was great. He let us go for free as they don't accept cards and we had only pounds. I gave him £5 and he pinned it to a wall board as a memento.

The Bacho Kiro cave (Bulgarian: пещера „Бачо Киро“) is situated 5 km (3.1 mi) west of the town Dryanovo, Bulgaria, only 300 m (980 ft) away from the Dryanovo Monastery. It is embedded in the canyons of the Andaka and Dryanovo River. It was opened in 1890 and the first recreational visitors entered the cave in 1938, two years before it was renamed in honor of Bulgarian National Revival leader, teacher and revolutionary Bacho Kiro. The cave is a four-storey labyrinth of galleries and corridors with a total length of 3,600 m (11,800 ft), 700 m (2,300 ft) of which are maintained for public access and equipped with electrical lights since 1964. An underground river has over time carved out the many galleries that contain countless stalactone, stalactite, and stalagmite speleothem formations of great beauty. Galleries and caverns of a 1,200 m (3,900 ft) long section have been musingly named as a popular description of this fairy-tale underground world. The formations succession: Bacho Kiro’s Throne, The Dwarfs, The Sleeping Princess, The Throne Hall, The Reception Hall, The Haidouti Meeting-Ground, The Fountain and the Sacrificial Altar

We have visited the place on the "shorter road", because the next "long" would make us wait 1 hour. The place is awesome and for the shorter road = you enter the cave completly at your own. For arround 30 minutes you can see the main places. In the cave the humidity is very high, so prepare with good shoes, it is very slippery. Next time i will go there for the longer road with guide. If you want to have choice , go there at 13:45 :)
Emen Canyon is a stunning natural reserve situated 22km west of Veliko Tarnovo. The Negovanka River has shaped the deep creeks and beautiful waterfalls that make this place captivating for tourists. The canyon boasts steep limestone cliffs with an ecotrail that offers breathtaking views, weaving through tree-shaded clifftops and leading to a 10m-high waterfall. However, some parts of the trail are dangerous and old structures might not be accessible anymore.
So beautiful canyon with a waterfall at the end.
The way to get to the waterfall is not so easy, you have to climb a bit and if it rained before it is slippery but still worth it, very nice.

We spent 4 nights in our RV just below it. It was a fantastic thing to look out on in the morning.

Nice observation point on the old city and place to grab a drink or even listen to live music if you are lucky. The place looks a bit old and not very taken care of tho: stairs, surroundings, abandoned hotel on the way.

Great place to chill! The bar near the monument is very nice and the vibe here is great!

Neat! Definitely worth the walk 🚶! The view from down there’s break-taking

It's quite a hike to get here from the old town, but the walk through the tumble down districts is worth it. You can catch glimpses of the iconic statue as you circle down, but it's more impressive close up. There are fine views to the old town all around you and a nice outdoor cafe at the art gallery to sit down and enjoy them.

Nice place. A monument to the Assen dynasty was opened In 1985, on the 800th anniversary of the Assen Brothers’ revolt against Byzantine’s rule.

The Asenevci monument is dedicated to four brothers from the Asenev dynasty: Asen, Petar, Kalojan and Ivan Asen II. It was built in 1985 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the uprising of Asen and Peter, which led to the liberation of Bulgaria from the Byzantine Empire. The large sword in the middle is a symbol of the power and prosperity of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom.

The second best landmark in Veliko Tarnovo. Monument of greatness. Sadly with some addition that I very much dislike - the Mother Bulgaria statue in the middle, but that's personal. The horses and horseman are awesome. Black is very daring for statues, but that just makes them scarier and radiating.

Pictures monument with big history. Great focus point, can be seen from various point in town.

Free to view. Free car park . Well worth seeing.

This monument is so commanding the surrounding hills seem to have been carved around it. Amazingly, we were there for more than 1 hour during sunset and there were hardly any other tourists around. That's how much ahead of the tourist curve we are currently.

Great views from here of the Old Town, and the buildings are reflected in the river which is very pretty. There was also live jazz music when we visited in the evening
Fern Gleeson — Google review
Superb monument in an excellent position as it can be viewed from different locations. Good place to see it is either across the river standing on the sky bridge or Gurko street. Sadly, the easiest bridge to get to it is round the other side - a new bridge is definitely needed!

g.k. Sveta gora, 5003 Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria
I'll never travel to Bucharest without this trip planner again
Tsarevets Fortress is a renowned medieval stronghold and palace situated atop a hill that showcases an audiovisual presentation on Bulgarian history. It is an iconic landmark of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria's highly-esteemed monument, once serving as the dwelling place for medieval tsars. The fortress encompasses over 400 houses' remains, 18 churches, royal residence, an execution rock and more. With numerous potholes and broken steps at unfenced drops necessitating careful navigation through the fortress.
The fortresses is a place were you can climb, walk and discover remains of it. The landscape can be better when everything is bloomed.
As the signs says, watch out for small lizards on sunny days, and be prepared with bottles of water. The sun does not forgive. Also, light or comfortable shoes are recommended for climbing.
Some tips:
- the entrance is 5 lv for an adult
- there are some vending machines close to the main church
- capture the map from the main entrance for better guidance
- you'll find some interesting paintings inside the cliff church

Definitely one of the best and well preserved fortresses I visited. Very easily explorable, a good sight to see from close and afar. It's funny that inside one of the towers there are mock weapons to take some selfies with. The view to the city is also quite good. There are places to buy refreshments inside. Just please - to all visitors, squish your bottle before throwing it away. No need to take the space of the whole trashcan with two bottles.

A really great attraction and absolutely worth seeing! Bring some snacks so you can hangout and enjoy the views. A man named Viktor hangs out outside of the place striking conversation with people and trying to sell them old Roman coins he has dug up. A scam, but he's harmless

A truly significant place that must be seen by anyone who visits the town. A good tour would take about 2 hours. There's an a panoramic elevator behind the bells tower which I recommend, it costs 2lv per person the view is worth it. Overall a 5 star experience.

Massive fortress to explore. Very well kept but lacking in information and the QR code did not work. Need to read up on it or take a tour to really appreciate the history. There are some boards with reconstructions on them but that is all. Great views!

The fortress overall is amazing, took me a lot of time to see everything but it's definitely worth going. You can even go visit it by foot because it's not far from the city center
During the night they even offer a light show which you should not miss

Very impressive! What an incredibly preserved and wonderfully restored complex!
When you come upon the area it is awesome to behold in my opinion! There is a large area to explore and wandering around is very affordable at 5 €. If you visit the Fortress on a sunny day come prepared with sunscreen and water maybe even a hat.

Don't miss out on this hidden gem. needs around 1 and a half hour to get around. the cathedral is a must-see with amazing wall paintings. also visit the vigilance tower to get a real-life feeling of castle warfare. Unfortunately, the elevator to the top of the bells was out of order.

Pretty close to the city center (20 to 30 minutes by walk), Tsarevets Fortress is definitely a must seen if you visit Veliko Tarnovo. The price for the entrance is pretty cheap and overall it takes approximately 2 to 3 hours (if you want to make a pause) to visit the whole place.
If you are lucky and the weather is good, it's a pleasure to just sit for a while here and relax, while enjoying the view.

Amazing place. 1 euro only to go inside. Nice spot to take nice pictures, picnic or spend your day. I visited it in a sunny day. Was amazing to see people and the capel on the top. From
The top you have a good view from the city. If you have time it worth go to visit mini Bulgaria next to this fort. Nothing else to see in the city 3 hours it’s enough
Felipe Zanetti — Google review
Visiting is the only way you can grasp the size of this fortress. Its HUGE and very well preserved. After your visit there is plenty more to see and do in the area.
Mike M — Google review
It's worth the walk, the few hours, and the non-expensive ticket price to visit and explore the vestiges of the medieval fortress.
As visitor, you will be mostly on your own, because there are no guides and no information in English or other international language.
The museum on top is intriguingly painted (but kind of kitchy?).
The view from above if amazing.
During the summer days, use sun protection and hat. Take some water with you, or some leva if you want to buy it from the vending machines.

It's a must visit place in Veliko Tarnovo. There is an entrance fee but for a family it is around 8 euros, as I remember. It has great views of the city and surrounded mountains. At the top, there is a church and it's a bit steep to walk. Keep enough water on a sunny day. A lot of shops near the entrance to buy souvenirs.

Beautiful! Stunning scenery surrounding the Fortress. So much history within. Can be quite a hike but the view is definitely worth it. Shame we didn't stay for the light show in the evening. Even has toilets dotted around which is very handy.

Once in a lifetime as my family often jokes. A must see. Offers the best views. Felt overwhelming with emotions when on top, felt proud being bulgarian again. Only 15lv for family of 4. Superb afternoon out for us

The compound is pretty large, it is all peaceful, the view is great. You can easily spend two relaxed hours inside the fortress. One of the landmarks of Veliko Tarnovo.

Nice to explore this big site, the remains, the walls,..
Do know that most of it has been destroyed so you'll mainly see the remains. With some imagination though you can see it all come alive as it was back in those days.
The elevator in the central church / tower to go up to the viewpoint is closed on Mondays. I recommend visiting because it s a nice site showing a part of Veliko Tarnovo's and Bulgarians history. However also don't expect too much.

As soon as you reach the city, you see it: the Tsarevets Fortress. It's stunning! The bridge that takes you to the fortress has some great views and it's quite nice. You can also climb up to a few towers to enjoy the panoramic view of the city. On a sunny summer day, you should definitely use some sunscreen as most of your visit will be in direct sunlight. If you're passing through Veliko or you're nearby, I would recommend paying this one a visit.

Tsarevets, Tsar Asen Square, 5000 Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria
Famous site of a 13th-century monastery complex carved out of rock, featuring preserved frescoes.
I would not say that is impressive but it is worth a look. There is quite a great scenery, there's also a small hike path that guides you to some view points. In the end you arrive at the church where you can find details of what and how it happened to look as it is, in different languages given to you for free by the guides over there. Also there is a gift shop from where you can buy magnets and some perfumes.

Excellent C13 monastery with roof and wall paintings. Beautiful views out into the valley. Quite a stiff climb 40 metres up to the monastery.

Definetly worth a visit. Great history, and even though we had a guide, the person attending the cave has a lot to add about the history of this remarkable historic site
Michael Barclay — Google review
The caves have been inhabited by monks from the 1200 when it was founded by the Patriarch of Bulgaria Joachim I. The monastery complex reached over 40 churches. Frescoes were painted in 13th century. There are nice stairs to climb (the old wooden ones were removed) ... There is also a panoramic view.

A really cool old church carved into a mountain. There's a gentle walking trail up to the church entrance (if the 126 steep stairs are too challenging) with nice views of the surrounding valley. The murals inside the church itself are breathtaking and remarkably well preserved. There was a tour guide at the entrance who collected fees and answered questions about the structure and its history. Definitely worth a visit if you are in/near Ruse.
Marissa Kuncheff — Google review
Very cool, very old (1360 AD) church built into the cliff face. There are frescos that have survived intact and are very well preserved, especially on the ceiling, but many others are damaged as would be expected. Look closely and see an interpretation of the Last Supper that is 100 years older than da Vinci's masterpiece. Don't expect a large place (it's carved into a cliff, after all) or vivid colors as I believe the church, though protected, was still open to the elements for hundreds of years.
There is also a nice, flat look out area on the way up that shows the beautiful valley and surrounding cliffs.
Note: There's a longer, sloping way up that doesn't involve as many steps that makes the church a little easier to reach, although you will still have to navigate at least a few steps. You can take the steep steps on the way down, but if you have knee problems, just take the long way back, as from what I understand, going down steps is actually harder on your knees than going up.

Unique and quite impressive place. Ask for a guided tour- the guide has treasured stories about the church and its 660 years of history.

Beautiful, but small and very few people although I was there on a Sunday (27 august 2023). It is also not suited for many people. Better go there with an organized tour or with private transportation. I came from Ruse, took train to Ivanovo. But no transportation from there to the church. And no trsnsportation from church to Ruse or Ivanovo. On location you can buy drinks but no food
Henk Brons — Google review
A church cut into the rock hundreds of years ago, and then painted with biblical scenes on every surface possible! Access is either up some steep steps, or along a cliff side path, so not for the faint. But the view inside is quite something, and the view from the balcony spectacular!

This site is an amazing UNESCO World Heritage Site with frescos dating 800 years ago. I loved the (easy) climb and the site. Beware of the hungry mosquitos and spray generously before ascending the stairs.

Beautiful frescoes that are incredibly well preserved inside this tiny church hewn from rock. I recommend taking the path past the souvenir shop and walk up the hill following the sign. The stairs from the car park were incredibly slippy (it had just rained) although there is a hand rail to hold.
The ticket man was incredibly helpful and told us all about the frescoes in English.

These medieval temples are interesting to visit. They have played a significant role in the second Bulgarian kingdom. But please don't expect to see something wow. Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo are located near Ruse. The town i strongly recommend to see.Parking is not a problem. Entrance is around 6 EUR. Kids are for free but as always prices may vary year to year. There are not restaurants nearby.

I would recommend taking the trail on the way up and the stairs on the way down.
Basarbovo Monastery is a historic monastery nestled in mountain caves, featuring original artwork and offering guided tours. It is conveniently located close to the Medieval Fortress of Cherven and within a short drive to the picturesque Lipnik Nature Park, making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
The Monument of Liberty in Ruse is a significant tourist attraction located in a beautiful park. It was built to commemorate the liberation of Bulgaria and Ruse from the Ottoman Empire's rule in 1877. The statue depicts a woman holding a sword, facing North towards Russia, which is part of the city emblem's design. Initially, it was supposed to have a statue representing Tsar Liberator Alexander II on top, but citizens opted for one symbolizing freedom instead.
Nice monument in Ruse. The initial design featured a statue of the Tsar Liberator", Alexander II on top but Ruse people decided to replace it with a statue of a woman, symbolizing freedom. One of the two bronze lions at the base is tearing the yoke chains whilst the other defends the Shield of Freedom.

A tidy and modern town square full of cafes and bars to sit and watch the world go by. As you move out if the square you enter the old town of narrow streets and old buildings with a mixture of origins just 500 metres from the River Danube

The monument stands proudly in a beautiful park in a central location for touring the city of ruse. It commemorates the liberation of Bulgaria and Ruse in particular from the Ottoman 'yoke' in 1877. The statue depicting a woman with a raised sword, faces North towards Russia from where the liberators came. It is part of the design on the city emblem

A very beautiful, modern and peaceful place. Lots of trees and fountains giving a bit of fresh during Ruse summer heat (up to 38/40 degrees!!). At night you can even hear the cricket, lovely when your room oversees the square.
